We had decided to drop our bags off and start exploring the city's sights. With our accommodations being about a 2 minute walk to Circular Quay, we decided to go to the Taronga Zoo. Once we located the correct ferry in Circular Quay to take to the zoo, we found we could swipe our credit cards to board (and when getting off) for the ~12 minute ride to the zoo. Upon arrival to the drop off pier, there are options: 1) Would have been a gondola ride to the top of the hill and the main entrance of the zoo - it was and will be closed for some time for repair/improvements 2) You can walk to the lower entrance, but this will have you walking uphill through the zoo - and then back down 3) Wait for a bus that will take you to the top of the hill to the main entrance - this was the option we chose - we had at least a 10 minute wait for a bus to show up. The bus is also a swipe on/swipe off, so not free. The zoo is stretched out over a large area, so there can be a lot of walking. From a zoo map, we saw that animals we could see in our own zoo went one direction and animals native to Australia went the other. With the sun/heat, maybe long flight, and trying to prevent walking down and back up, we decided to go the Australian direction and skip the other. The koala section was the highlight for us, but some animals, like the platypus, we didn't see (like any zoo - sometimes they're out, sometimes not.) Once through that part of the zoo, we were able to cut across to the main path which has circles painted on it which do help you in knowing where you are on the map. We progressed to the mid level gift shop seeing a few more animal displays and then decided to leave. On the way out (stair steps allowed us to shorten our way down) we saw a few more animals along the path. Once out, there is a short walk back to the ferry pier for the swipe on/swipe off ride back to Circular Quay. The layout/map of the zoo isn't bad, but to see it all would take some time. They are two of the volunteers who take people around to explain all the different things to watch for and what makes them so special. They were fabulous. The zoo has a wide range of different areas of the world that the animals are grouped into, but the area we wanted to see the most was the native Australian animals. They have a wonderful variety and easy to reach displays. Having the guides explain what to watch for and point out things that we would have missed completely made all a difference in the world. I felt like every thing was incredible, all the staff were amazing from the get go. My daughter did the Meerkat encounter and loved every minute. I was lucky enough to join in with the Dingo encounter, the gent who led the experience was next level, had so much knowledge. I will never forget this encounter. The lounge is cozy and inviting and the rooms are very small but nice (although very expensive!). The reception staff was very friendly and professional. The view from the lounge (sunset) is fantastic. I loved the fact that we had 2 private tours (one at night with no one else)and the guides were amazing and very knowledgeable! The area of improvement would be at the lounge-bar… there’s absolutely no service. The barman was lazy and everyone had to go order at the bar (for food or drinks), to get the menu or for anything else…and it was not busy. Also, they only open at 2pm… which is not practical if you want to have lunch…you have to go to the zoo grab fast food. The lounge menu is also very limited. You only have 3 choices.. ! That’s a huge disappointment. As a luxury hotel, they should improve that… Also, the wifi didn’t work for most of my stay. The front desk told me they didn’t have a reliable internet provider. It’s not acceptable for a luxury hotel in a city like Sydney. They should look at changing provider! For elderly people: please note that the parking is very far. There’s parking in front of the hotel in the street but we can’t use it. Also, the air in the room was stifling (there’s no opening windows). I had to open my door for a good 2 hours to get the air circulating. I kept sneezing every time i entered the room. The beds were very comfortable but their air wasn’t. The zoo in itself is under massive renovations for a lot of areas closed. They should improve the signalisation… I saw a lot of people that were completely lost …. Not a good customer experience. We caught the ferry over to the zoo and had a lengthy wait for the bus (not free) to take us up to the main entrance of the zoo. If you’re feeling fit you can hoof it uphill to the lower zoo entry and navigate yourself up from there. It was an incredibly hot day & although a lot of the animals were sleeping/chilling there was lots to see. The keeper talks were brilliant & the animal enclosures were large & clean. There is a lot of walking involved and most of it uphill but the views of Sydney are well worth it. The bird show is a definite must see & it was wonderful to hear & see first hand how these beautiful birds are being encouraged to thrive at Taronga. Of course seeing koala's and kangaroo's was our highlight. It was great to see how respectful the guide and staff are with respect to the animal sensitivities. They deftly handled the tourists who felt they had a right to touch and hold animals that were legally protected. We have great respect for how the guides balanced the experience with care for the animals. Overall a wonderful experience and we recommend allowing a whole day for this visit! There are free shuttle buses to the main gate at the top of the hill. This means you can wander down all day ready to catch the ferry back to Circular Quay. Booking online was easy and cheap. After 2 pensioner discounts the entry fee was $269.70. It was a very disappointing family day out. We saw no lions , no tigers , no bears , no water animals etc etc etc All we saw was 4 giraffes , a few koalas, a few kangaroos, a bird aviary , a indoor reptile display . The place is huge with lots of spaces for the animals and not cramped like any zoo in the city area. I would recommend going there via the ferry from CQ. This will take you at the bottom of the hill which you can then use the bus to go up to the Zoo main entrance or walk uphill for about 5 mins for the side entrance. Using the ferry will provide a difference experience as you will sail pass the harbour bridge and the Sydney Opera House. At the zoo, you can easily spend a whole day here exploring everything. You don’t need to take a printout – on the day of your visit, show the tickets in your email and walk in.

In case of a last-minute change of plans, you can cancel them up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.

This is the most value-for-money Taronga Zoo ticket.

You start this tour from one of these three locations – Darling Harbour , Circular Quay , or Manly .

You get on to the Rocket Ferry operated by Captain Cook Cruises and travel to Taronga Zoo; on the way, enjoy stunning views of the Sydney Harbour, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, etc.

This ticket gets you access to all Zones at the Taronga Zoo, including the Sky Safari cable car.

It is close to Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD), and there are various ways to get to Taronga Zoo.

Taronga Zoo Ferry

If you prefer a ferry to reach Taronga Zoo, board one from  Circular Quay ,  Darling Harbour , or  Manly .

The traveling time is around 12 minutes.

From Circular Quay, you can also get on board one of Captain Cook Cruises’ Zoo Express boats.

All you have to do is buy a Sydney Harbour Cruise + Taronga Zoo ticket , and get the transport both ways.

You can board the M30 metro bus outside Central , Town Hall , or Wynyard Train Stations every 10-15 minutes.

If you are trying to reach the Taronga Zoo via the Northern suburb bus routes, get down at either Spit Junction or Mosman Junction and board the M30 bus.

If you are coming from Balmoral Beach, pick bus route number 238 to get dropped off at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo main entrance.

If you are trying to reach the Zoo by train, get down at the Circular Quay train station and get a ferry.

The entrance to this parking zone is on Bradleys Head Road.

The best time to visit Taronga Zoo is when they open at 9.30 am.

There are two shows you must try and pack in during your Zoo visit.

Both are free for Taronga entry ticket holders.

However, they get crowded fast, so you must reach 10 minutes before the scheduled time to save a seat.

The free-flight bird show at Taronga Zoo begins at 12 pm and 3 pm daily; no booking is required.

It showcases the natural behavior of birds like Andean Candor. Watch out for its three-meter broad wings.

The Seal Show at Taronga Zoo show begins at 11 am and 2 pm daily. On weekends an additional performance is scheduled at 1 pm.

This showcases seals’ natural behavior, like catching fish, climbing, etc.

You also see other species, such as the Australian Sea lion, Californian Sealion, etc.

Attend Keeper Talks

You can spend the whole day attending Keeper Talks at this Zoo.

All Taronga Zoo Keeper talks and feeding sessions are free to attend. That is, they are included in your entry ticket.

Most of them last only 10 minutes, so it is better to arrive early.

You get to see Taronga’s Asian Elephants up close and learn how the lady of the house leads her herd.

You get to understand why Giraffes are such amazing animals. How they are gentle and yet can be firm when required.

Meerkat family in Taronga Zoo Sydney is a lively bunch and to watch them eat insects, fruits, and vegetables during their feeding time is fantastic.

Time: 11.30 pm, daily Duration: 15 minutes

Gorillas have interesting social dynamics, and you get to learn and see it for yourself during this talk. You will see firsthand why Gorillas are known to be intelligent.

Time: 2.30 pm, daily Duration: 10 minutes

Chimpanzees have interesting family dynamics, which you will be able to observe from up close as they have their lunch.

Time: 12 pm, daily Duration: 15 minutes

The keepers tell the story of the penguin’s journey to the Taronga Zoo. How the injured and washed-up penguins reach the Zoo and settle down in their new home.

Time: 2.40 pm, daily Duration: 10 minutes

This talk is currently not running.

You can see and learn a lot about Australian reptiles, such as the Black-headed Python, Blue Tongue Lizard, etc.

You can also take photographs to show off later.

Koalas sleep for 18 to 20 hours a day, so no hard promises if you will see them all active.

However, you can learn a lot from the Zookeepers as the marsupials rest amongst the eucalyptus trees.

Not all get excited at the prospect of seeing a spider, but those that do want to know everything about the eight-legged beings.

Time: 3 pm, daily from Monday to Friday Duration: 30 minutes

Komodo dragons are aggressive carnivores. In this talk, you get to see how ruthlessly the World’s most giant lizards can eat.

Time: 11 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays Duration: 10 minutes

At the ‘Encounter the animals’ session, you get closer to the animal for a one-on-one.

These animal encounters are paid activities; your Taronga Zoo entry ticket doesn’t cover these.

You can encounter numerous animals up close, such as Koalas, Penguins, Giraffes, Meerkats Encounter, Birds, and Elephants.

Unfortunately, you can’t book these animal encounters in advance.

From the Taronga Sky Safari, you get fantastic views of Sydney Harbour.

During adverse weather conditions, Sky Safari is paused for a while.

Access to the Centenary Theater is included in your admission ticket to the Taronga Zoo.

The theatre has a day-long schedule of screening animations, live shows, and short films.

During this session, you meet the Blue Mountains Bushwalk Keeper, Bush Bird Keepers, Wetlands Aviary Keeper, and Pelican Keeper.

This is a paid activity, and you can choose from four adrenaline-fueled Wild Ropes courses.

Both kids and adults can strap on a helmet and navigate suspension bridges, climbing walls, flying foxes, etc., even as they see the animals below and Sydney Harbour on the horizon.

Depending on which course you choose, this course can be 45 minutes to two hours.

This is perfect for smaller kids. They are sure to love petting rabbits and Guinea pigs.

They also get to know what it takes to be a pet owner.

Kids can walk and learn how animals live on the farm at Taronga Sydney.

This 15-minute free activity is available on the weekends at 1.30 pm.

During school holidays, this is scheduled daily.

Day trip to remember

We had a great day at the Zoo. Our only regret is that we did not get up earlier and spend more time there.

The Kangaroos and Wallabies were great (you get close) but the highlights for us were probably the Platypus and Australian nocturnal animals – some of which we had not heard of before.

Perfect day for a young family

Try to go outside of busy times (school holidays). The seal show is amazing – the kids were captivated! Also, bring a spare change of clothes and swimmers in warm weather as there are great playgrounds with water features to play in. – Alison B

During the NSW school holidays, it is open on all days.

Growing up, a two-hour train ride from Sydney meant I got to experience weekends with friends in the city. We had our favorite things to do—some of which have since disappeared, but change is inevitable. However, there is so much more to do, whether you’re after something relaxing or more adrenaline-pumping—there’s something for any adventure you have in mind with friends. These are some of my favorite things to do with friends in Sydney.

1. Harbor Bridge Climb

Take on an adventure by climbing the iconic Harbor Bridge. Enjoy breathtaking views of Sydney and the harbor from the summit. It’s an exhilarating experience that your friends won’t forget. Bridge Climb organizes these for starting at $294. If the price puts you off, you can walk the bridge for free or climb to the Pylon Lookout and Museum for $25.

2. Gelato at Circular Quay

This is one of my favorite things to do with friends in Sydney. It’s incredibly serene to pick your favorite gelato from one of the shops lining Circular Quay and stroll around the harbor. With the stunning Opera House and Harbor Bridge backdrop, it’s a sweet treat in a picturesque setting.

3. Sydney Opera House

No visit to Sydney is complete without exploring the world-famous Sydney Opera House. Whether you take a guided tour or admire its unique architecture, it’s a must-see cultural landmark. You can take in a performance or book a tour  for a behind-the-scenes look at the interior. 

4. Take a Ferry

The green and cream-colored ferries at Circular Quay are part of the public transport network. They’re an inexpensive way to take a boat trip with your friends on the harbor while you enjoy the lap of the waves and take in the sites. There’s also a private network, Captain Cook Cruises, which is around $18 for a return trip.

5. Explore the Rocks

Wander through the historic cobbled streets of The Rocks, where you’ll find a mix of vibrant markets, pubs, and unique shops. Dive into Sydney’s history and enjoy the lively atmosphere. There are also exciting and informative walking tours . Despite being a local, I’ve taken this tour several times and have always managed to find something I didn’t know before. If you’re a fan of NCIS: Sydney , you’ll find filming locations here. 

5. Royal Botanic Garden

Begin your day with a stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden. It’s a serene oasis in the city’s heart, offering stunning views and cafes, making it a perfect morning coffee or picnic spot. This is Australia’s oldest Botanic Garden and has an area of over 74 acres.

6. Art Gallery of New South Wales

If you and your friends appreciate art, visit the New South Wales Art Gallery. Explore the diverse collection featuring both local and international artists. Savor treats from the Gallery Café or Kiosk, offering a diverse takeaway menu crafted by Indigenous Elder Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo, showcasing the richness of native Australian ingredients. Be sure to catch one of the complimentary daily guided tours.

7. Manly Beach Day

Spend a relaxing day at Manly Beach. Whether surfing, swimming, or enjoying the sun, Manly offers a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of shops and eateries to explore. Located on Sydney’s North Shore, you can take a ferry or train—though I think the ferry is more fun.

8. Chinatown Culinary Adventure

Originating in the 1920s, Chinatown stands proudly in the city’s heart, adjacent to Haymarket and Darling Harbour, welcoming visitors every day of the year. Recognized as Australia’s largest Chinatown, it’s a bustling hub featuring numerous stalls, a vibrant crowd, and many culinary delights. A visit to Sydney with friends would only be complete by immersing yourself in the lively atmosphere of this cultural hotspot.

9. Sydney Tower Eye

At over 1000 ft high, it’s the second tallest observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere. For $23 per adult, you and your friends can take panoramic city views from the Sydney Tower Eye. It’s a great way to get a bird’s-eye perspective of the stunning Sydney skyline. 

10. Live Events at the Enmore Theatre

Check the schedule for live performances at  The Enmore Theatre . It’s a fantastic venue for enjoying music in an intimate setting. They have a regular comedy club, bands, and performers like Australia’s favorite Tim Minchin.

11. Blue Mountains Day Trip

Discover the tranquility of the Blue Mountains on a  day trip from Sydney . Immerse yourself in forested valleys, explore storybook villages, and hike mountain trails to witness waterfalls and iconic sandstone formations. Indulge in countryside bakeries, dine with a view of nature’s beauty, and explore heritage-rich towns with local attractions like galleries and chocolate shops. Remember to marvel at The Three Sisters, a captivating sandstone formation within the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park. While the idea of a trip to a fish market may seem like a smelly option, the Sydney Fish Market is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This authentic working fish market offers a variety of things to do with friends in Sydney, including seafood retailers, cafes, restaurants, a bakery, a butcher, a gourmet deli, a greengrocer, and a bottle shop. Engage in the market’s wholesale auction with a Behind the Scenes tour and witness the activity on the working wharf. 

13. Cooking Classes

Enhance your visit to the fish market by taking a cooking class at Sydney Seafood School . Cooking classes are fast becoming one of my favorite activities to do with friends and meet new friends. Australia is such a multicultural country that you’ll find cooking classes in just about any cuisine you wish to know more about.  Class Bento  is an excellent site for finding available courses.

14. Paddington Markets

If you love shopping days with friends, Paddington Markets is a great place to go on Saturdays. Since 1973, it originally started as a support for local fashion designers.
