NIVA TRAVEL TEAM GENERAL INFORMATION
Interested in trying out for a travel team?
Our travel program is for girls and families that want to compete at an elite level and dedicate more time (and money) to the sport. Players looking to play in college usually choose this division for the level of coaching and competition as well as the exposure to college coaches.
Girls on these teams practice 2-3x a week at various schools (usually in Penn and Elkhart district schools). You get a monthly calendar with days and times for practices. We try to stay consistent for teams throughout the season but are at the mercy of the schools at times and also want to be flexible around our players' schedules for school sports and events. Coaches will try to adjust the practice calendar monthly around what girls can make and what's available for the schools.
Tournament schedules will be released in October but you can plan on 2 out of town tournaments a month. These usually require hotel stays Friday and Saturday evening. We do have group blocks for hotels but families are allowed to stay wherever they want at these tournaments (unless they are stay-to-play)...with family, other hotels, etc. We do NOT require the girls stay together. Families are responsible for the cost of getting there, hotel and food at the tournament on their own.
We have various levels of travel teams (Purple, Black, White, Grey, Silver, Pink). Purple and black teams are national level teams that go through June and finish the season at Nationals. White, Grey, Silver and Pink teams are done by spring break.

Is The 2022 Lada Niva Legend Worthy Of Its Stately Name?
The niva is alive and kicking..
Believe it or not, the Lada Niva has evolved significantly in the last few years. So much so that there are two separate model lines on sale today. The Niva Travel is the more civilized and affordable small SUV that traces its roots to the Chevrolet Niva built between 2003 and 2020. Then, there’s also the Niva Legend , which is a slightly modernized version of the classic Niva off-roader. But is this crossover worthy of its stately name?
The folks over at Carwow decided to test drive the Niva Legend for the 2021 model year and their video on YouTube is a lengthy 17-minute review of a car you are unlikely to see on the road soon. Mat Watson, the channel’s host, admits he’s always wanted to drive a Niva as there must be something special in a 4x4 car that costs just £17,500 or $23,400 with the current exchange rates.

There’s something very contradicting about the design of the Niva Legend. Obviously, it’s pretty outdated from every aspect. However, there are trends, including the reverse design of the front end with indicators above the headlights and the overall hatchback shape reminiscent of many modern crossovers, that make it a little ahead of its time. Bear in mind, the Niva Legend was first launched in 1977 as simply the Lada Niva.
Large windows, robust bumpers, and an actual exhaust pipe instead of stupid chrome trim - there’s not much to be dissatisfied with. It’s a similar story inside the cabin where there may be mostly cheap materials, but the car from the video has heated front seats, electric windows, and air conditioning. What more do you need in a no-frills off-roader?
Driving The Niva:
Under the hood, the Niva Legend has a 1.7-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine good for 83 horsepower (62 kilowatts). The power reaches all four wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, and Carwow even tests the car on the quarter-mile strip. The small crossover covers the distance in… yes.

Lada niva travel: russia’s more modern and refined ‘mountain goat’ suv.

A more refined take on Lada’s classic, compact and uncomplicatedly capable Niva SUV line, the Niva Travel is a more comfortable, quiet and well equipped sister model to the better known classic Niva.
Complementing the 3-door Niva as a more modern and practical vehicle with 5-door utility and contemporarily rugged styling, the Niva Travel might lack some of the original and iconic Niva’s charms, but is by no means toned down or compromised in its extensive off-road abilities, and shares the same engine, drive-line and suspension design as the former.
A different take
Launched in 2021 by the now wholly Russian-owned and independent automaker Avtovaz/Lada, the rebranded and re-styled Niva Traval is in effect and evolution of the VAZ 2123 compact SUV first launched in 1998 and later marketed as the Chevrolet Niva as a joint venture collaboration with General Motors. Slotting in between 3- and 5-door versions of the classic Niva — now afforded the Legend moniker — the Niva Travel may share much of the same mechanicals, but distinctly differs in design from the uncluttered older model’s clean lines.
Different in design from the enduring Niva Legend and its beautifully proportioned and uncomplicatedly boxy design, the Niva Travel’s more modern styling themes include a big, wide and hungry trapezoidal grille flanked by slim, scowling and heavily browed headlights. It also employs trendy touches like more contoured and bulging surfacing, lower black cladding, black B- and C-pillars, stylised rear lights, and a more swept back windscreen. Its spare tyre is, meanwhile, repositioned from the Legend’s under bonnet location to external mounting on the side-swinging rear tailgate.
Compact and capable
Comparatively narrow and tall for manoeuvrability through off-road routes, the Niva Travel’s design, however, differs from more modern SUV in its low waistline and big glasshouse, which provides excellent road visibility for manoeuvring and accurately positioning it on- and off-road, and when parking. A compact 4.1-metre long mountain goat style off-roader, the Niva Travel rides high at 220mm above the ground and features short 749mm front and rear overhangs, which allows it generous off-road angles and the ability to transverse rough and inhospitable terrain.
Powered by a marginally detuned version of Lada’s familiar, long-running and uncomplicated longitudinally-mounted 8-valve 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine, the Niva Travel develops 79BHP at 5,000rpm and 94lb/ft at 4,000rpm. Giving away just 3BHP and 1lb/ft, but gaining 200kg compared with the lighter Niva Legend, the bigger and better equipped and insulated 1,485kg Niva Travel is nevertheless only slightly slower. Accelerating 0.2-seconds later through 0-100km/h at 19-seconds, the Niva Travel is capable of a 140km/h maximum, and returns 10.2l/100km fuel economy on the combined cycle.
Reassuringly rugged
Little changed in headline statistics, the Niva Travel’s additional weight over the Legend is, however, more noticeable on the move and in how it feels slightly blunted and less responsive. Requiring one to hold gears to higher revs to build enough power and momentum before up-shifting on steeper inclines, one is tempted engage the Niva Travel’s low gear ratio range for more robust low speed performance for certain on-road circumstances and topographies. That said, the engine is nevertheless smooth and rewardingly linear in operation and character.
Driving its permanent four-wheel-drive system through a 5-speed manual gearbox, the Niva Travel offers plenty of traction for sure-footed off-road driving. Riding on front double wishbone and rugged live axle and coil spring rear suspension, the Niva Travel’s extensive off-road abilities also include long wheel travel to traverse big obstacles while maintaining ground contact, and a locking centre differential and low gear ratios for demanding inclines and low traction conditions. Fording 500mm through water, it can, meanwhile, be optionally fitted with a high A-pillar mounted intake snorkel.
Comfort and composure
A small manoeuvrable SUV with reassuring road holding, the Niva Travel is an authentic, yet, rugged off-roader with terrifically unexpected refinement. If anything, it is its very refinement that detracts from sort of loud, visceral and ultimately engaging charisma of the older, lighter Niva Legend. That said, the Niva Travel proved stable and settled on the road, soaking up imperfections with forgiving composure. Turning in tidily but leaning somewhat through corners owing to its comfortable suspension, the Niva Travel’s steering and braking were meanwhile accurate and natural in motion.
Quiet and comfortable, the Niva Travel’s cabin provides a high but supportive and ergonomic driving position with its user-friendly controls and terrific road visibility. Its gear lever motion is crisp, clear and satisfyingly precise, and clutch intuitively precise.
Well packaged despite a narrow and compact frame, it offers decent legroom and generous headroom at the rear, while luggage space is well sized. Finished with honest well-built materials, the Niva Travel is comparatively modern and well equipped, and features a powerful A/C and clever driver’s armrest that rotates to alternatively serve as a rear cupholder.

Everyone knows that the Lada Niva is quite popular in Russia, and we are not only talking about the good-old Niva Legend but also for the more modern Niva Travel . What you probably didn’t know though is that people from Japan are importing Lada Niva Travel SUVs in the country, paying a cool $31,286 in the process.
As you would expect, Japanese buyers are into well-equipped variants, so the ¥3,480,000 ($31,286) asking price gets them the Lada Niva Travel Luxe Offroad. This is a massive $17,791 premium between the price of the model in its home market in Russia and in Japan, making it no less than 132 percent more expensive in the “Land of the Rising Sun”.

For the record, in Russia, the Lada Niva Travel starts from as low as 820,900 ₽ ($11,270) in base spec, while the flagship Luxe Offroad costs 982,900 ₽ ($13,495).
At least, buyers are getting standard air-conditioning, a multimedia system, a rearview camera with washer, power windows, heated seats, heated windshield, 16-inch alloy wheels with heavy-duty tires, and a snorkel. However, you shouldn’t expect any modern active safety features from the Russian off-roader, since the safety equipment is limited to a couple of airbags and ABS.
The company that grey imports Lada in Japan is called Le Parnass. According to Daily Motor , Le Parnass is buying new Lada models from the Khabarovsk Territory in Russia and transports them via ferries to the Japanese islands.

Besides the Lada Niva Travel, Japanese fans of the Russian brand can also buy the Lada Vesta Sport sedan. This is imported for ¥3,780,000 ($34,020), when the price in Russia starts from 1,209,900 ₽ ($16,611), which represents a 105 percent premium. Another thing you should know is that all Ladas that arrive in RHD Japan are still left-hand-drive.
For those who are not familiar with the Lada Niva Travel, it is actually a facelifted version of the AvtoVaz 2123, also known as Chevrolet Niva . It debuted back in 1998 but has been extensively facelifted for 2021 bringing a modern look. Maybe it doesn’t look as tough as the immortal Niva Legend, but it still poses as a rugged SUV thanks to the redesigned face, the high ground clearance, and the plastic cladding all around the bodywork.

All Lada Niva Travel variants are fitted with the naturally aspirated 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine producing 80 hp (59 kW / 80 PS). Power is sent to all four wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, a dual-speed transfer case, and a mechanical differential lock.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations
There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity. While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration. Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.
The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way. The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.
Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow. The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum. Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.
Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide. What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater. You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.
With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure . I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history. It’s the ultimate interactive museum.
Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)
Kievskaya station.
Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River. Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).
Mayakovskaya Station
Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention. The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper. Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.
Novoslobodskaya Station
Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station. Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action. The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases). Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.
Komsomolskaya Station
Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur. It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city. The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life. Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.
Dostoevskaya Station
Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature . The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile. However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment. Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections. At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.
Chkalovskaya Station
Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again). Chrome borders all. Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft. There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects. Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display. By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.
Elektrozavodskaya Station
Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry. The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform. The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns. The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.
Baumanskaya Statio
Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students. Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success. Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing. At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45. Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.
Ploshchad Revolutsii Station
Novokuznetskaya Station
Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics. This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area. Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market. The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in. The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.
Here is a map and a brief description of our route:
Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya. Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya. At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north. Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center. Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii. Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
