Spread out along the banks of the Nile, Aswan is a relaxed and friendly town that provides a tranquil interlude if you've just arrived from busier Luxor or Cairo.

Once ancient Egypt's gateway to Africa, this is the best place to visit and base yourself for exploring the temples, monuments, and other tourist attractions in the southern reaches of Upper Egypt and the area's distinctly different Nubian culture.

With Aswan the closest town to Ramses II's colossal temples of Abu Simbel , the island temple of Philae , and the Nile-side Temple of Kom Ombo , there are plenty of things to do within day-tripping distance.

The best way to discover Aswan's charms, and the most relaxing sightseeing experience, is to hop aboard a felucca (traditional sailboat) and view town from the watery highway that once made Aswan an important trading post.

The river here is speckled with islands holding picturesque mud-brick Nubian villages and hemmed by the West Bank's colossal sand dunes.

It's all incredibly photogenic, particularly at sunset, when hundreds of lateen-sailed feluccas take to the water, and the river shimmers in the setting sun. For keen photographers, Aswan is one of the best places to visit in Egypt for capturing classic Nile scenery.

Discover why Egypt's most southern Nile-side town should be on your itinerary with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Aswan.

Elephantine Island

Peppered with palm tree plantations and sloping villages of colorful mud-brick houses, Elephantine Island is Aswan's major tourist attraction.

At its southern end are Aswan Museum and the Ruins of Abu, Aswan's most ancient settlement , which contains the Old Kingdom Temple of Khnum and the Temple of Satet.

The museum building, in a beautiful late 19th century villa, is partially open, with a collection of artifacts that span Elephantine Island's history up to the Roman era.

On the eastern embankment near the ruins and down a flight of steps is Aswan's Nilometer . Ancient Egyptians measured the Nile's rise and fall with these stone-hewn wells, allowing them to estimate the height of the annual flood and thus predict the success of their harvest.

Once you've finished exploring the ruins, head north into the island to wander the backstreets of the villages of Koti and Siou , where the houses are painted with vibrantly colored designs. Sheep graze and chickens peck in the narrow alleyways, and farmers till their gardens as they have done for centuries.

There are frequent local ferries from the boat landing in downtown Aswan to Elephantine, or you can also hire a felucca to sail you around the island.

Felucca rides at sunset

The quintessential way to sightsee in Aswan is by taking to the river on a felucca (traditional lateen-sail boat).

You'll have no problems finding a captain willing to take you on a river tour. Felucca captains hang out along Aswan's Nile-side corniche all day, touting for customers.

A typical short tour of around two hours sails in a loop around the islands of the central Aswan area, with great views of the rippling desert dunes of the west river bank, the lush palm-tree-sprinkled islands, and the city on the east bank.

For longer tours, make a half-day or full-day felucca itinerary and plan for a swimming stop along the way, plus stops at some of the central Aswan tourist attractions, such as the archaeological site on Elephantine Island, Kitchener's Island , and the west bank sites of the Monastery of St. Simeon and Tombs of the Nobles .

You can also head south, up the river, and out of central Aswan on a day-long felucca trip to S eheyl Island . The island is home to a Nubian village and a cliffside covered in inscriptions. The Famine Stele here documents the devastating famine that occurred during the reign of the 3rd Dynasty Pharaoh Zoser.

Abu Simbel

If you have time for only one day trip from Aswan, pick a visit to Abu Simbel .

Built by Ramses II, and saved from destruction by a remarkable UNESCO rescue project in the 1970s, Abu Simbel is not only a triumph of ancient architecture, but also of modern engineering.

The mammoth scale of the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor sitting on the banks of Lake Nasser trumps everything else in Egypt and has to be seen to be believed.

Most people come to Abu Simbel by tour. Abu Simbel is 280 kilometers south of Aswan, so expect transport in a minibus or car to take around three hours.

This private day tour to Abu Simbel transports you by private vehicle to the site, and includes an in-depth tour of the temples with around three hours on-site. Entrance fees, lunch, and an Egyptologist tour guide are included.

This similar private Abu Simbel minibus tour transports you by minibus to the temples and includes entry and tours of both temples with an Egyptologist guide.

Philae Temple

The sacred Temple of Isis (more commonly known as Philae Temple) is one of Upper Egypt's most beguiling monuments both for the exquisite artistry of its reliefs and for the gorgeous symmetry of its architecture, which made it a favorite subject of Victorian painters.

Like Abu Simbel, the temple was saved by the rising waters of Lake Nasser by UNESCO's rescue project and moved lock-stock-and-barrel from its original home on Philae Island to nearby (higher) Agilika Island where it sits today.

The Temple of Isis , a center for the ancient cult of Isis, is the main part of the Philae Temple complex , but the island is also home to the Temple of Hathor , the Kiosk of Trajan , and various other buildings from the Roman and Byzantine periods.

You reach the island and its temple complex by boat, giving you plenty of Nile views on the approach and return journeys.

Philae's ticket office and the pier are eight kilometers south of Aswan. Return taxi trips can be easily arranged in Aswan, although most people arrive here as part of an Abu Simbel day trip tour.

Unfinished Obelisk

Aswan's Northern Quarry is home to the famous Unfinished Obelisk–a 41-meter-long and four-meter-wide chunk of stone that was probably abandoned because of a crack in the rock.

It's estimated that if completed, the obelisk would have weighed 1,168 tons and would have been the largest ever hewn.

On the surrounding rock faces, you can also see the many traces of the work of ancient stonecutters. The blocks here would have been detached from the rock by boring holes along a prescribed line, driving wedges into these, and then soaking the wedges with water to detach the block.

You can easily walk to the Northern Quarry area from Aswan's downtown area. It is just east of the Fatimid Cemetery and the Nubian Museum .

Monastery of St. Simeon

The gloriously photogenic Monastery of St. Simeon sits between the sand dunes on the Nile's West Bank.

Founded in the 7th century CE and finally abandoned in the 13th century CE due to water shortages, it's one of the largest and best preserved Coptic monasteries in Egypt.

Inside the monastery courtyard, an aisled basilica takes up the southern side of the monastery.

At the east end of the wide nave, once covered by two domes, is the large apse, with three rectangular niches under semi domes. In the central niche are the remains of a fresco depicting Christ enthroned between angels.

To the north and west of the church are various subsidiary buildings and small grottoes, while the eastern side is made up of living quarters.

Upstairs, you will find some more well-preserved barrel-vaulted living quarters, including the monk cells, with brick beds and Coptic and Arabic inscriptions upon the walls.

Standing on the monastery's fortified walls, overlooking the undulating dunes, gives some sense of the isolation the monks who lived here must have faced.

Today, you can hire a boat or felucca to take you to the monastery boat landing and then either hike or take a camel ride (30 minutes) into the sand to get here.

St Simeon's Monastery - Floor plan map

Camel-trekking is a scenic way to travel between the Tombs of the Nobles and the Monastery of St. Simeon on Aswan's West Bank.

The trek, across the desert plain and backed by golden sand dunes, reveals the harsh desert environment that edges the Nile's narrow strip of lush farmland.

Camels can be hired near the ferry landing at the Tombs of the Nobles. The journey to the monastery takes around one hour.

This camel trek is best done earlier in the morning so that you're not riding during the worst of the day's heat.

For a shorter camel ride, there are also camels for hire at the felucca landing-pier near the monastery.

Tombs of the Nobles

This series of rock tombs chiseled out of the West Bank's cliffs were where Elephantine Island's governors, priests, and other grandees were buried during the Old and Middle Kingdoms.

They're accessed by a series of steep staircases just to the left of Gharb Aswan's boat landing.

The first tombs you enter are Tombs 25 & 26 where 6th dynasty governors Mekhu and Sabni were buried. The artistry in both is somewhat simple and roughly worked.

Up the path to the right is Tomb 31, belonging to Prince Sarenput II, a contemporary of King Amenemhet II of the 12th dynasty. This is one of the largest and best preserved tombs in the necropolis.

Beyond the tomb chamber is a small corridor with three niches on either side. Look to the left of the first niche to see a figure of the dead man and his son with excellently preserved colors.

Tomb 34 (Harhuf's tomb) contains inscriptions recording successful trading expeditions in Nubia.

A flight of steps from here leads up to the Tomb of Setka (First Intermediate Period), which has badly damaged wall paintings that still have astonishingly vivid colors and are among the few surviving examples of the decorative art of this period.

Aswan Botanical Gardens

Often included on sightseeing felucca trips, Aswan Botanical Gardens cover a small six-hectare island (often referred to as Kitchener's Island ) just west of Elephantine Island.

The island was once the property of Lord Kitchener who transformed it into a verdant garden of exotic plants from Asia and Africa.

It's a little scruffy in parts these days, but is still a great place to come for a relaxing stroll amid mature trees and lush greenery, with plenty of bird-spotting opportunities in the late afternoon.

It's a popular spot for local picnickers on the Egyptian weekend, so if you're looking for a quieter experience, avoid Fridays and Saturdays.

Old Cataract Hotel

The ornate façade and lush gardens surrounding the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan (the Old Cataract Hotel) are one of Aswan's major river bank landmarks, and impossible to miss if you're taking a sightseeing sailing trip around Aswan aboard a felucca.

The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan's biggest claim to fame is that Agatha Christie wrote part of Death on the Nile while staying here, and the hotel was also featured in the movie based on the novel.

If you want to do an "Agatha" but don't have the money to stay here, the hotel's terrace is the de rigueur place to have high tea in town.

Drinking tea while feasting on a very English selection of scones and sandwiches, and basking in the stunning views across the Nile to Elephantine Island and the sand dunes of the West Bank beyond, is about as close as you'll get to the great lady herself.

Address: Al-Fanadek Street

Nubian Museum

Aswan's rather fantastic Nubian Museum is one of Egypt's best and a must for anyone interested in the history and culture of both ancient and modern Nubia.

It documents the riches of a culture that was all but washed away with the building of the Aswan Dam and creation of Lake Nasser .

There is an excellent collection of artifacts from the Kingdom of Kush (ancient Nubia) and plenty of wonderful black-and-white photos of UNESCO's incredible project to save Philae Temple and Abu Simbel from the rising waters of the dam (along with extensive photographs of the huge range of other monuments that are now lost forever under the lake's waters).

The artifacts in the museum collection include a statue of Ramses II, a statue of Amenras, the head of the Shpatka, and the black granite head of Tahraqa.

As well as thoroughly explaining the history of Nubia and its people, the ethnographic section displays gorgeous Nubian handicrafts and folk art.

Don't miss the slumping mud-brick mausoleums of Aswan's Fatimid Cemetery just behind the Nubian Museum. The cemetery caretakers are happy to take visitors on a tour, and can point out the most interesting mausoleums for you. Don't forget to leave them a small tip.

Temple of Kom Ombo at sunset

The most famous section of the Nile is the part of the river running north from Aswan to Luxor, with its scatter of pharaonic temples along the palm-studded river banks.

The nearest Nile-side temple to Aswan is the Temple of Kom Ombo, 47 kilometers to the north.

Built during the Ptolemaic era, the Temple of Kom Ombo is notable for its excellent state of preservation, thanks to its relative youth, and for the dazzling stone relief work inside.

If you're not jumping on a Nile cruise at Aswan (and hence will be visiting Kombo Ombo Temple as part of your itinerary) then a day trip here is easily arranged from town.

Aswan High Dam

Aswan's High Dam is modern Egypt's most lauded and yet controversial building project.

Begun in 1960 and taking 11 years to complete, the dam was President Nasser's pet project and greatest achievement, and was achieved through funding and technical help from the Soviet Union.

The High Dam has some staggering statistics.

Its building took 42.7 billion cubic meters of stone (17 times the volume of the Pyramid of Cheops ) with its total length being 3.6 kilometers.

It is 980 meters thick at the base and 40 meters at the top. The average capacity of the dam's reservoir (Lake Nasser) is 135 billion cubic meters with a maximum capacity of 157 billion cubic meters.

The dam brought fantastic benefits to the country, allowing sustainable electricity across the country and increasing the amount of arable land in Egypt.

However, it also put an end to the annual Nile flood, which fertilized farmer fields with its rich silt deposits, and the creation of Lake Nasser (the world's largest artificial lake) wiped away much of Upper Egypt's vast heritage as the waters rose.

A four-lane highway runs across the top of the dam where there is a triumphal arch and an inscription commemorating the completion and the cooperation between Egypt and the Soviet Union to build it.

Trips to the Aswan High Dam are often included on day trips to Abu Simbel , or you can easily hire a taxi to get here.

Kalabsha

This group of temples were all saved from a watery end by UNESCO's rescue project, and now sit on the banks of Lake Nasser.

Kalabsha Temple is the best preserved of the three temples here and also the youngest, dating from the time of Roman Emperor Augustus.

The most imposing monument in Nubia after the Temple of Abu Simbel, it was built on the site of an earlier temple founded by Amenhotep II and re-founded during the Ptolemaic Dynasty.

The decoration was never completed, and the reliefs that do exist are crudely executed. During the Byzantine era, the temple was converted into a church.

Just to the northwest is the Temple of Beit el-Wali ("House of the Holy Man") built by Ramses II and consisting of a vestibule, transverse chamber, and sanctuary.

There are lively historical reliefs throughout the interior depicting many of Ramses II's battles and triumphs, including the king's triumph over the Kushites and his wars with the Syrians and Libyans.

Tiny Kertassi Temple sits just to the north and has two Hathor columns at the entrance and four other columns with elaborate floral capitals.

Taxis to Kalabsha can be easily hired in Aswan, and a trip here is best combined with a visit to Philae.

Aga Khan Mausoleum

Presiding prominently atop the West Bank's cliff, the Aga Khan Mausoleum was built to hold the tomb of Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah (1877-1957), leader of the Shi'a Islam Nizari Ismaili sect.

He is chiefly remembered for his various charitable acts, setting up educational and medical institutions throughout Africa and Asia, as well as for the influential role he played in discussions about the partition of India.

Although born in Karachi (then part of India under British colonial rule), the Aga Khan often summered with his family in Aswan and so had a deep connection to this part of Egypt.

You can't visit the actual mausoleum, but you're sure to spot it sitting high above the Nile's bank.

Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan's Western Quarry

For archaeology fiends, Aswan's Western Quarry makes an interesting trip.

It was from here that much of Ancient Egypt's most recognizable statuary began their lives; chiseled out of the hillside of Aswan granite. Archaeologists think that Luxor's mammoth Colossi of Memnon come from this quarry.

Today, you can still see the tracks where huge blocks of stone were dragged to the river for their journey down the Nile to grace the temples of the pharaohs.

There are no roads here, so if you're up for a camel adventure, a visit here is also plenty of fun.

Camel drivers can be hired at the Gharb Aswan boat landing, and the trek takes about 30 minutes.

Souq Area

Slap in the center of Aswan's downtown district, Sharia el-Souk is a souvenir-hunter's dream.

The stalls brim with spices and perfumes galore, traditional galebeyas (long robes) and scarves in rainbow hues, basketry, and silverware.

It's a fun place to browse and–for the most part–free from the vendor hustle that you get in other parts of Egypt.

Look out particularly for Nubian jewelry and needlework, which showcase the distinctly different culture of Upper Egypt's people.

And if you've become addicted to the refreshing local karkadai drink, keep your eyes peeled for buckets of the dark-red dried karkadai (hibiscus) petals that you can buy by weight to recreate the drink back home.

Wadi al-Subua

Wadi al-Subua's main tourist attraction is the bulky Temple of Ramses II , which contains some excellent statuary and a lovely melding of ancient Egyptian reliefs and later Byzantine Christian paintings (the temple was used as a church during the early Christian period).

As with Philae, Abu Simbel, and the other temples in the Lake Nasser area, Wadi al-Subua's monuments are only able to be viewed today thanks to the UNESCO project that saved them from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.

Wadi al-Subua is 211 kilometers south of Aswan, on the western shore of Lake Nasser. Nearby, there are two other temples worthy of a visit if you've come all this way.

At the Temple of Dakka you can climb to the top of the gateway for astounding views over the desert setting, while at the Temple of Maharaqa you can also scramble up the flaking staircase to the roof.

Set along the east bank of the Nile River, Aswan is a laidback and friendly city that will capture your heart – not to mention your imagination.

I’ll admit – aside from its proximity to Abu Simbel, Aswan was probably the city I knew the least about before my recent Egypt trip – as a result, it was the one that surprised me the most.

Aswan has always been an important city in Egypt and has acted as the country’s gateway to the rest of Africa for centuries. The area is unlike any other in Egypt and is famous for its distinct Nubian Culture.

Throw in a few show-stopping landmarks, a rich heritage and its jaw-dropping location on the Nile, and you’ll start to understand why Aswan earns itself a special place in so many people’s memories.

Top 5 Things to Do in Aswan

Visit philae temple.

Philae Temple

Sitting pretty on its own island, Philae Temple is one of the best-preserved temples of the Ptolemaic Dynasty and one of my own personal favourite tourist attractions in Aswan.

To put it quite bluntly: it is stunning.

I’m not going to go into too much of the temple’s history but there are a couple of reasons why Philae looks quite different to some of the others you will see in Egypt.

First is the age: at just over 2,000 years old, Philae is actually one of the youngest Ancient Egyptian temples still standing.

In addition to that, the Ptolemaic Dynasty was an era which saw Macedonian Greeks rule over Ancient Egypt as Pharaohs and, as such, the architecture from this period is distinctly different to that of previous eras.

All that to say, that Philae, a temple that is dedicated to Isis, Osirus and Horus, is jaw-dropping, not only in its scale, but in the intricacy of the hieroglyphs that chart their way over every available surface.

Stunning as Philae is today, the island you find it on isn’t actually the same one the Ancient Egyptians built it on all those years ago.

Philae was originally located on a different island but had to be moved when the High Dam was built in the late sixties as it would have been completely submerged.

And yes, if you think this tale sounds familiar, the same thing had to be done with Abu Simbel, while other temples like Debod were donated to other countries (Debod was given to Spain and is one of my favourite spots in Madrid ).

You’ll see why Philae is nicknamed the Pearl of Egypt as you approach the temple by boat. There are tons of imposing monuments with exquisite reliefs and perfect symmetry, while the hieroglyphics carved onto its stone walls are some of the last recorded in the Ancient Egyptian civilisation.

Tip: The best way to explore the Philae Temple is with a guided tour , where you can combine a visit to the temple with other

Learn About Nubian Culture at Nubian Museum

Nubian Museum

The Nubian Museum is one of the most remarkable museums that you can visit in Egypt. Aswan is best known for its rich culture and link to the ancient Nubian Kingdom. This is one of the best places to learn more about the ancient and modern-day Nubian people and their way of life.

This museum dives into the history of the Nubian people and contains a range of artefacts, including handicrafts and artworks. There are also monuments to visit, such as a collection of statues of Rameses II and other Pharaohs.

Just behind the museum is the Fatimid Cemetery, where you’ll get to take a tour of a unique collection of domed tombs from the Fatimid period.

Take a Day Trip to Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel

If you only have time for a one day trip from Aswan, then I recommend a day trip to the temples of Abu Simbel, which I’ve written a full guide on here .

I was emphatic that I was going to visit Abu Simbel on my recent trip and I’m so glad I did – the temple complex is one of the most impressive sights in Egypt… which is really saying something given it rivals destinations like Karnak and The Pyramids of Giza.

These temples are some of the greatest in Egypt, built by Rameses II. Abu Simbel is a triumph of ancient engineering and architecture – honestly – I’m yet to meet a person that wasn’t awestruck by the sight of the temples.

The site is about 280 kilometres from Aswan, so you can get there by plane from Aswan Airport or by bus or private car , which is cheaper but takes longer.

Top Tip: Taking a Day Trip to Abu Simbel by Plane is Much Faster

Visit Kitchener’s Island and the Aswan Botanical Gardens

Aswan Botanical Garden Kitcheners Island

If you’re looking for a place to relax and take in the beauty of Aswan, visit the Aswan Botanical Gardens on Kitchener’s Island. It’s a small island in the Nile, opposite Aswan. It takes its name after Lord Kitchener, who owned the island.

In 1928 he turned the island into a wonderful botanical garden with exotic plants from all over Africa and Asia. The island is a great place to take a moment to breathe and relax surrounded by lush greenery that makes a nice contrast to the arid landscapes of the south.

Here you can take a stroll, explore the vibrant variety of plants, or enjoy a picnic of delicious Egyptian treats.

To get there, simply nab a boat from the pier next to Aswan’s McDonalds to ferry you across the river (and ensure they wait for the return journey).

See The Unfinished Obelisk

Just a few minutes away from Aswan’s downtown area, you’ll find one of the city’s most famous attractions – The Unfinished Obelisk.

This landmark is in Aswan’s Northern Quarry, and it is the largest known obelisk in Egypt. No one knows why it was never completed, but if it were, it would have weighed over a tonne.

This impressive granite monument is one of the most important discoveries in Egypt. It provides a glimpse into the exceptional stonemasonry of the ancient Egyptians.

Brilliant Things to See & Do in Aswan During the Day

Explore tombs of the nobles.

Tombs of the Nobles

The Tombs of Nobles are a set of impressive rock tombs on the cliffs of the West Bank and are where Aswan’s nobles have been laid to rest.

You can access the tombs through a steep staircase near the Gharb Aswan boat landing.

While it might be quite a trek to the top, it’s worth the effort.

Do so to explore the intricately decorated tombs of princes and other leaders. One of the most notable tombs is Tomb 31, which is the best-preserved tomb on the cliffs.

Walk Around Elephantine Island

A visit to the historic Elephantine Island should go onto any guide to the top 10 things to do in Aswan – and I’m not going to be the exception.

Sprinkled with multitudes of palm trees, it’s one of the most scenic places in Aswan, right in the middle of the Nile River.

There’s so much to see and do on the island. It has a plethora of ancient archaeological sites, which are now on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the sites that are worth exploring are the Aswan Museum and the Ruins of Abu.

The Ruins of Abu is the oldest settlement in Aswan. Then there’s the Temple of Satet, a stunning 19th-century villa that houses some artefacts and shows the island’s history.

If history isn’t for you, you can always take a felucca boat ride around the island or take a stroll past the colourful houses in the villages of Koti and Siou.

Take a Day Trip to Temples of Kom Ombo and Edfu

Edfu Temple

You can skip this one if you are going to take a Nile river cruise from Luxor to Aswan as, chances are that the cruise will stop at both Kom Ombo and Edfu along the way.

If you’re not, then a day trip to Kom Ombo and Edfu is a great option for seeing two very different kinds of temples within easy distance of Aswan.

Kom Ombo

Ruins of the Temple of Kom Ombo, Egypt

Kom Ombo is about an hour away from the city and is part of the route from Luxor to Aswan. In Kom Ombo, you’ll find a unique temple complex dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris.

It’s one of the largest temples in Egypt, although divided into two parts. One part portrays the story of the crocodile god Sobek, while the other gives insight into the life of Haroeris, the falcon god.

The hieroglyphs on the temple’s walls also paint a vivid picture of the ancient Egyptians harvest seasons and special events around the Egyptian calendar. There’s also a Crocodile Mummy Museum that delves more into the cult that worshipped Sobek.

Temple of Horus at Edfu, in Egypt

Edfu is home to one of the most important temples in Egypt, built to honour the falcon god, Horus. The Temple of Edfu is a large complex with a stunning courtyard, multiple chambers, and tons of hieroglyphs.

Shop at Aswan Souq

Aswan Souq

Just over a kilometre long, Aswan Souq is a shopaholic’s dream. You’ll find everything from jewellery and textiles to handmade goods and spices.

It’s also a great place to try local favourites like Karkadai, a refreshing tea made from dried hibiscus flowers. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Aswan, a visit to the Souq is right up there.

It provides refreshing changes from temples and monuments and is a great place to pick up some items to remember your trip to Egypt.

Take a Trip to a Nubian Village

If you’re keen to try some exciting activities in Aswan, then you might want to take a boat trip to one of Aswan’s colourful Nubian Villages.

The main one, across the river from central Aswan, aims to preserve Nubian culture.

You can learn about the Nubian people and take some very Insta-worthy pictures outside their colourful homes.

I’d also recommend booking a dinner at a local family’s home so you can learn more about Nubian culture from the source (and eat some very tasty food as you do).

Indulge in High Tea at the Old Cataract Hotel

High tea might be quintessentially British, but the one at the Old Cataract Hotel is an absolute must.

It is one of the oldest hotels in Aswan, built in 1899 by Thomas Cook.

Over the years, it has hosted many important people, but it is most famous for being the place where Agatha Christie wrote Death on the Nile while staying in Egypt.

Indulge in a variety of high tea classics while taking in the stunning views of the Nile and West Bank.

Cool Things to See & Do in Aswan at Night

See the philae sound and light show.

One of the coolest things to do in Aswan at night would definitely be to catch the sound and light show at the Philae Temple . It is a magical experience as you watch the temple light up and hear incredible stories of its history.

Dine at Salahaddin Restaurant

Salahaddin Restaurant

There’s no better way to experience Aswan than through its food, and you can do so at the Salahaddin Restaurant. It’s one of the best restaurants in Aswan, located right next to the Nile with several terraces.

They serve an interesting mix of Egyptian, Nubian, and international dishes – it was one of my favourite dining spots in Egypt.

Feast on Traditional Egyptian Food at Makani Restaurant

Makani Restaurant

Makani Restaurant was another one of my favourite eating spots in Aswan. Serving traditional Egyptian cuisine on a gorgeous riverfront terrace, it’s a lovely spot for lunch or dinner – the owner is super-friendly and helpful too.

Hop on a Felucca at Sunset

Nile Felucca

A felucca boat ride is pretty exciting during the day, but it’s even more magical when you go just as the sun sets. The ride usually lasts an hour or two and takes you around the various islands in the Nile.

It’s one of the most scenic and memorable things you can do in the evening as you watch the sun slip away over the horizon.

Explore Aswan’s Old Souks & Bazaars

The one thing that’s great about Egypt is that its Souks and bazaars stay open until late. If you’re not keen on walking around in the heat during the day, then you can always go exploring at night.

One place worth checking out is the Hanafi Bazaar, where you can buy 18-carat gold items and jewellery.

12 Unmissable Things to Do in Aswan

It’s always hard to pick favourites, especially in a country as mind-blowing as Egypt, but if I had to pick my fav city in this formidable country, then my prize would go to Aswan.

This Nile-side spot, situated in the south of the country close to the Sudanese border, is about as relaxed, yet jam-packed with incredible sights, as it gets in Egypt.

From the utterly mesmerising temples of Abu Simbel and Philae, to the peaceful boat rides to Elephantine and Kitchener Island, Aswan is full of rich historical treasures, peaceful Nubian villages and stunning river views.

Arriving here from Sudan (read more about this overland journey I made in my post travelling from Ethiopia to Egypt by road ), Aswan was my first taste of Egypt and what a taste!

With some of the friendliest people in the country, a mega-chilled vibe and sunset roof terrace panoramas to die for, here are the 12 unmissable things to do in Aswan that will have you falling in love with this destination just as much as me…

#1 stroll elephantine island.

Egypt, Aswan, Elephantine Island

The biggest island in the Nile near Aswan, Elephantine Island is a delightful place to stroll around, taking in the quiet, dusty streets and traditional villages.

The Nubian people who live here – an ethnic group that populates northern Sudan and southern Egypt – really are some of the kindest, most hospitable people on earth and you won’t be able to go far without being invited in for tea!

Kids play in the streets, men gather on the pavements smoking sheesha, women chat together in the doorways and families of sheep jostle their way past you.

All in all, Elephantine Island provides a great insight into local life and it will cost you just 5 Egyptian Pounds (LE) each way, on a boat from the Corniche in Aswan, to visit.

#2 Test the Nilometer

Egypt, Aswan, Nilometer

Elephantine Island is also home to the Aswan Museum, but perhaps its more famous attraction is the Nilometer, an incredible measuring system that the Ancient Egyptians used to assess the height of the Nile.

Situated within the Museum complex, entrance costs 100 LE and includes access to the Nilometer, a small garden area, an excavation site currently being worked on by a Swiss / German team and a look inside the small exhibition hall.

A “guide” will show you the way to go after the entrance. It’s a basic service, with little English, but helpful anyway and free – besides a tip of course!

Check out the temples and their original stonework first before making your way to the Satet Nilometer.

With steps that lead down to the river, and clever markings that help judge its height, this is a fascinating glimpse into the highly sophisticated skills of a civilisation that existed here over 3,000 years ago.

At the bottom of the Nilometer is a nice archway, framed perfectly for your Instagram shots and you can even sit on the bottom step and cool off by dipping your toes in the world’s most famous waterway!

What’s not to love?

#3 Marvel at the Unfinished Obelisk

Egypt, Aswan, Unfinished Obelisk

Aswan was the source of many of Ancient Egypt’s longest-lasting monuments and many of the relics you’ll see as far north as Luxor were constructed from the stone mined here.

You can actually go and see some of the huge, ancient quarries yourself in Aswan and, of particular interest, is the Unfinished Obelisk.

This Obelisk would have been the largest single standing stone in Egypt – had it not cracked in the middle (DOH!) – and it now lies abandoned in the quarry where it was left thousands of years ago.

Visiting this attraction is definitely one of the best things to do in Aswan because it gives you such a great idea of just how much work went into the stonemasonry of this ancient civilisation before, of course, the development of modern tools!

Carving out a huge slab of stone from the landscape is no easy job in the baking heat, but with only a small stone to chip away with, well, it was quite the undertaking let me tell you!

#4 Visit the Nubian Museum

Definitely the best museum in Aswan, the Nubian Museum is a highlight recommended by the Egypt Lonely Planet and I agree!

It wonderfully showcases the culture of the Nubian people and has been curated in conjunction with UNESCO as a reminder of what happened to the communities after the creation of the High Dam and Lake Nasser, which flooded much of the original valley here.

Great to educate yourself and learn more about Aswan’s central community, this one is a must during your time in the city.

#5 Snap the High Dam

Egypt, Aswan, High Dam

A short trip, but nevertheless worthwhile to help you understand a major defining feature in the Nile’s landscape, the quick drive out of the city to the High Dam is definitely one of the top things to do in Aswan.

Costing just 50 LE to enter, walk to the dam wall and peer over the edge of this great, albeit controversial, engineering feat.

During the construction of the dam and the subsequent creation of Lake Nasser, many Nubian villages in this area were lost, but the dam also stops the annual flooding of the Nile and resulting damage in the rest of Egypt, so its construction is certainly a political and divisive issue.

There’s also a huge monument here constructed as a testimony to the Soviet- Egyptian friendship – also controversial!

If you’re feeling extra keen, you can pay additional to visit this, otherwise, you can see and snap it from the road!

#6 Sail to Kitchener Island

Egypt, Aswan, Boat Ride

Just to the west of Elephantine Island lies Kitchener Island and heading here on a cheap boat ride from the Corniche is another great thing to do in Aswan.

Once on Kitchener Island, you can visit the Temple of the Nobles, as well as the famous Aswan Botanical Gardens, which were created by Lord Horatio Kitchener after he was generously given the island in the 1890s!

Also known as El Nabatat Island, this tiny spot is less than 1km long and is wonderfully peaceful.

If you’re visiting Aswan during the hotter months, you can usually catch a breeze here, which certainly adds to the appeal!

#7 Walk to the Monastery of St Simien

This is definitely a little off the beaten track in Aswan – not many tourists make the climb – so if you do put in the effort to visit the Monastery of St Simien, you’ll probably have it to yourself!

I recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon if you can, so the sun is not too hot – a real blessing given it’s a fair old scramble up a sand dune to get to this monastery, which sits at the top of a hill.

Taking a boat from Aswan is easy to the base of the hill and a camel can then help you with the climb if required.

#8 Wander Philae Temple

Egypt, Aswan, Philae Temple

One of my favourites in Egypt (and let’s be fair, there’s some pretty stiff competition!), Philae Temple sits on its own island in the Nile, so sailing here and snapping the reflection of the temple in the water is a real treat.

Because it’s on an island, Philae feels very peaceful and when I visited, there were few others around.

Allow at least 45 minutes to wander around this complex, marvelling at its colourful inscriptions, stone windows and beautifully lit hieroglyphics.

Entrance for Philae Temple is 180 LE and the boat ride is 150 LE return – do not pay more than this!

The boatmen may try to insist it’s 170 LE each way, but don’t believe them for a minute!

#9 Sail to Kom Ombo

Egypt, Aswan, Kom Ombo Pillar

If you have a few days spare in Aswan, then one of the best things to do is to take a felucca ride up the Nile to Kom Ombo temple.

A double temple, dedicated to both Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon-headed god, this spectacular site is about 50km north of Aswan.

Only accessible via boat, this is a beautiful temple and sailing gently up the Nile to visit it is certainly worthwhile.

Open between 9am and 5pm, I recommend taking a tour to this one, as it will include transport from Aswan as well as the helpful assistance of a qualified guide.

Entrance to Kom Ombo costs 140 LE.

#10 Be Amazed at Abu Simbel

Egypt, Aswan, Abu Simbel

And coming in at number 10 on this list of the top things to do in Aswan, it’s take a trip to the amazing temple of Abu Simbel.

Built by Ramesses II, this awe-inspiring construction is actually a 3 hour drive each way from Aswan, but let me tell you, it is WELL WORTH IT!

Transport is cheap and readily available from Aswan (300 LE for a return journey) and once you pay the entrance fee for the temple (240 LE) a guide is included.

Tours to Abu Simble from Aswan normally start at around 4am, so that you can be there when the site opens and enjoy, not only the cooler temperatures, but the beautiful morning light shining into and onto the temple as well.

After a couple of hours to explore, you’ll then be driven back to Aswan, meaning you’ll return to the city by lunchtime.

During your time at Abu Simbel, you’ll get to see 2 of Egypt’s most famous temples which overlook Lake Nasser and are HUGE!

Most famous are the 4 statues that greet you outside the main temple and, inside, more treasures await you!

The wonder is only increased when you learn that each stone was painstakingly moved and reconstructed in the current position, on higher ground, after the flooding of Lake Nasser.

Whatever you do, make sure you get to Abu Simbel and take your camera when you visit Aswan.

Here’s a great tour of Abu Simbel that runs from the city and includes hotel pick up – exactly what you need at 4am!

#11 Pick up a Nile Cruise Bargain

Egypt, Nile Cruise, Sunset Pool

Another great way to visit Kom Ombo Temple, as well as Edfu Temple and make the journey to Luxor too (great if you’re planning to head that way after Aswan), is to take a Nile cruise.

These 3 night trips depart regularly from Aswan and provide an amazing calm experience of sailing on the world’s largest river and seeing some brilliant historic sights.

Booked in advance, cruises can be mega pricey however, so if you want to learn how I bagged the deal of the century whilst in Aswan, check out this post I wrote that details the full adventure (and how you can replicate it!)

Otherwise, if you do want to book a cruise in advance, but not pay ridiculous amounts, check out this well-rated option .

Whatever you do, just don’t miss a Nile cruise while you’re in Egypt if you can!

It’s worth noting that cruises also run from Luxor to Aswan too. Usually 4 night journeys, they are slightly more expensive, but do mean you won’t miss out on this bucket list number if you’re travelling from north to south across Egypt instead.

#12 Stay in the Famous Old Cataract Hotel

And last but not least on this list of the top things to do in Aswan, it’s visit the iconic Old Cataract Hotel.

Now owned by Sofitel, this grand accommodation offering was originally built in 1899 and former guests include Winston Churchill, Howard Carter, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana and Agatha Christie, who actually chose to base a section of her famous novel Death on the Nile at the hotel.

With a gorgeous location, facing the Nile, the elegant Victorian character of this hotel is complimented by a lovely pool and modern spa. If you’re looking for luxury in Aswan, then this is the place to stay! Book your room here.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a great place to stay in Aswan on a budget, then I highly recommend Eka Dolli Guesthouse , which is where I stayed!

Located within a Nubian village, its peaceful rooftop terrace, great free wifi, huge free breakfasts and friendly staff make it excellent value. Don’t worry that it’s set a little out of town, the owner here will often take you to many attractions free in his car, as well as arrange your trips to Abu Simbel and other further away destinations at some great rates.

For something in the mid-range, check out the Habibi Nubian Guesthouse in Aswan, which offers private rooms and apartments for some seriously super prices.

When to Visit Egypt?

No question in my mind that you should definitely visit Egypt during the spring and autumn seasons i.e. from April to May and September to November.

This will allow you to get the most from the country’s lovely historical and coastal sites without being too hot!

How to Get to Egypt?

Most people access Egypt by flying into the international airport in the capital Cairo.

As always, I use Skyscanner to find the best prices.

If you are crossing into Aswan from Sudan, check out this post which details all the ins and outs of crossing this African border.

Top Egypt Tours

I travelled Egypt as a solo female and felt perfectly safe, but if you’d rather take a tour of the country and enjoy then the company of other travellers, I totally understand.

Here’s my top picks .

Accommodation in Aswan

Most of Aswan’s attractions are based around the Nile, the islands and the temples.

Staying in the city therefore isn’t strictly necessary as, wherever you are, boats and buses will be required to access most things you want to see.

If you’re on a budget, check out my post about the 5 best hostels in Aswan .

5 Items You Shouldn’t Travel in Egypt Without

#1 Egypt Lonely Planet – A great travel aide to this country with tons of historical info, the Egypt Lonely Planet will help you get the best from your time here.

#2 Arabic Phrasebook – Most people in Egypt who are connected with the tourism industry speak good English, but learning some Arabic never goes a miss, especially if you want to ensure you’re paying the best prices! The Egyptian Arabic Lonely Planet phrasebook is a super affordable packing must-have.

#3 Good Camera – Egypt is one of those ultimate bucket list destinations and travelling here with a good camera will help you preserve the memories. I highly recommend the mirrorless Sony A6000 . Light, compact and robust, it’s been perfect for my Africa travel adventures.

#4 Sun Hat – This country is hot and dry, like really hot and really dry. When you’re walking around temples and other sights you’ll be exposed to the sun for long periods of time, so making sure you pack a sunhat for adequate protection is key. I love this one from Hello Sunshine .

#5 Amazon Audible – Travel in Egypt can often involve long train or bus journeys, so having something to listen to while you enjoy the scenery is a must! I love Amazon Audible , which is the best audiobook service around!

Hi Steph, Thanks for your very useful posts. I’m looking for how to arrange a budget trip to Abu Simbel ? I found some talks about convey cars but that’s all. And private tours are extremely expensive. How did you get to Abu Simbel ? I also intend to take Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor, do you think that it includes some of places that you mention in this post ? I think of arriving to Aswan 1-2 days before the cruise departure to visit its neighborhood, will it be enough ? Thanks for your advices, Best, Hanh

aswan tourist attractions

Hi Hanh, excited to hear you’re travelling to Egypt. Sure you’re gonna have a fab time. I booked my Abu Simbel trip through the guesthouse where I was staying in Aswan – Eka Dolli Guesthouse. The trip included early morning pick up from the hostel and then group shuttle to Abu Simbel and back. Entrance extra was extra, but as this was very reasonable it was a cheap day trip. Also worth noting that a guide at Abu Simbel is included in the entry price, so don’t let them charge you extra for this. If I remember correctly, I think that all in all the whole trip was less than $20 – 25 USD. Normally the Aswan to Luxor cruises, include temple visits up the Nile and a tour in Luxor, rather than Aswan – so I recommend seeing the sights in Aswan yourself first. 2-3 days is best for seeing everything, Do check when booking your cruise however what is included. I’ve written a post about cruising this route and several others all about my time in Egypt, so just search Egypt on the homepage of my blog and you’ll find loads of info. Happy travels 🙂

very helpful advices, thanks a lot 🙂 best, Hanh

Hi Michael, great you enjoyed the post. The article is originally from mid-2018 after I visited Aswan, but was recently updated, hence the date change. Enjoy Egypt 🙂

The temple complex is dedicated to the goddess Isis and is one of the best-preserved Ptolemaic temples in Egypt. It offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history and architecture of ancient Egypt.

Visitors to the Temple of Philae can explore its beautifully carved reliefs, hieroglyphics, and stunning courtyards. The intricate details of the temple’s design and the stories depicted on its walls provide a fascinating insight into the religious and cultural beliefs of the time.

Exploring Philae Island

In addition to the Temple of Philae, a visit to Philae Island allows you to experience the natural beauty of the surrounding area. The island is lush with vegetation and offers picturesque views of the Nile River.

Exploring Philae Island also provides an opportunity to learn about the efforts undertaken to save the temple complex. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, the island was at risk of being submerged. In a remarkable engineering feat, the temple complex was dismantled and relocated to its current position on higher ground.

How to Visit the Temple of Philae

The Temple of Philae is accessible by boat, with regular boats departing from Aswan to Philae Island. It is recommended to hire a guide who can provide insightful commentary and bring the temple complex to life with stories and historical context.

When planning a visit to the Temple of Philae, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as there is some walking involved. Additionally, be sure to bring ample water and sun protection, as the Aswan region can be hot and sunny.

Nubian Museum

The Nubian Museum is a fascinating cultural institution in Aswan that showcases the rich history and heritage of the Nubian people. Aswan, with its close proximity to the Sudanese border, is the gateway to Nubia and serves as an ideal location for this museum.

The museum houses a vast collection of artifacts that provide insights into Nubian art, traditions, and daily life. Visitors can admire beautifully carved statues, stunning jewelry, intricate pottery, and colorful textiles, all of which depict the unique cultural identity of the Nubian people.

One of the highlights of the Nubian Museum is the replica of the Abu Simbel temples, which were relocated to save them from flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. These colossal structures stand as a testament to the engineering marvels of ancient Egypt and offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the pharaohs.

Nubian Culture and Aswan History

The Nubian Museum not only celebrates the vibrant Nubian culture but also sheds light on the historical significance of Aswan. Aswan has been an important trading hub and cultural crossroad for thousands of years, attracting visitors and settlers from various civilizations.

The museum’s exhibits also highlight Aswan’s role as a center of trade and commerce, showcasing ancient Egyptian artifacts, including pottery, jewelry, and sculptures. These artifacts provide valuable insights into the connections between ancient Egypt and its Nubian neighbors.

Egyptian Museums and Cultural Attractions in Aswan

While Egypt is known for its impressive museums, the Nubian Museum stands out as a unique cultural attraction. It offers a comprehensive and detailed exploration of the Nubian people’s history and traditions, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of this lesser-known aspect of Egyptian culture.

With its engaging exhibits, the Nubian Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the diverse and multifaceted history of Egypt. It serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Nubian people and their significant contributions to the history and development of Egypt.

Unfinished Obelisk: Exploring an Ancient Quarry in Aswan

unfinished obelisk

Located in an ancient quarry, this colossal structure provides a fascinating glimpse into the ancient quarrying techniques used by the Egyptians. The Unfinished Obelisk is the largest known obelisk that was never completed, and if finished, it would have been the largest obelisk in the world. Its enormous size and the tools and methods employed for its creation showcase the ingenuity and skill of the ancient Egyptians.

The Unique Appeal of Aswan Attractions

Aswan Egypt Tourist Attractions

It is interesting that so many visitors to Egypt consider Aswan only as a final stop on a Nile cruise when this region is packed with remarkable attractions, sites, and scenery. While it is the Aswan High Dam that so many people know, and Lake Nasser that so many come to explore, there is a long list of remarkable and “must see” Aswan attractions, as well.

Aswan Tourist Attractions Are All About History

One of the Aswan attractions that all visitors must see is one that comes as a bit of a surprise. Called the Unfinished Obelisk , this attraction answers at least a few of the questions about the “how” of Ancient Egyptian technology. For many long years people wondered just how the Egyptians made those massive, solid obelisks. Then the Unfinished Obelisk was discovered and it revealed just how they managed this impressive task.

Aswan Attractions

Engineering marvels can also be enjoyed with a visit to another of the top Aswan attractions – the Philae Temple . The structure itself is not a feat of engineering, but the relocation of it to spare it from being lost when the Aswan Dam was built was quite an accomplishment. Today it is a spot for an impressive light and sound display after sunset, but a visit to this Temple of Isis is enjoyable at any time of the day.

Aswan Attractions: In the Nile River

The Aswan area is also a spot to find some fascinating islands as well. There is the island given to General Kitchener and which is today the remarkably beautiful Aswan Botanical Garden . There is world famous Elephantine Island , which is another of the top tourist attractions in Aswan. While once playing a role as a military site, it is today a popular spot because of the Nubian Village open to visitors.

Aswan Attractions: On Land

Back on land, visitors frequently pay visits to the monastery of Saint Simeon , as well as the Tombs of the Nobles (Qubbet El-Hawa) . The tombs are rock cut tombs and truly impressive examples of the Old Kingdom period of Pharaonic Egypt. So far south in Egypt, there is a lot of Nubian influence to be seen, and the Nubian Museum is among the top Aswan attractions for those interested in this fascinating subject.

The more modern sites on shore include the gorgeous Aga Khan Mausoleum that sits majestically overlooking the water and is something that most visitors to Aswan visit. Of course, if you are lucky enough to be in the area during the Daraw Camel Market , this is an experience not to miss. Unlike the other, scenic or historic sites in Aswan, this attraction in Aswan is, possibly, one of the most unique, unforgettable, and entertaining.

A visit to Aswan is something you should plan if you are touring Egypt . Not all tour companies make guided tours available, but at www.egypttoursplus.com you will find a nice array of options for taking in the impressive and scenic beauties of Aswan. Though it is often forgotten because of its location at the bottom of Egypt, the true Egyptophiles will want to dedicate a few days exploring the wondrous Aswan attractions, or much more!

FILE: Aswan

CAIRO – 16 March 2019: As Upper Egypt’s city of Aswan is hosting the Arab African Youth Forum; Egypt Today brings you Aswan’s top tourist attractions and landmarks.

1- The Unfinished obelisk:

Located in Sheyakhah Oula, in the northern region of the stone quarries of ancient Egypt in Aswan, the unfinished obelisk is the largest known ancient obelisk. Its construction was ordered by Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. She was the second historically-confirmed female pharaoh, the first being Sobekneferu.

The unfinished obelisk is nearly one-third larger than any ancient Egyptian obelisk ever erected. If finished it would have measured around 42 m (approximately 137 feet) and would have weighed nearly 1,090 metric tons (1,200 tons), a weight equal to about 200 African elephants.

2- The Nubian Museum:

Inaugurated in 1997, the International Museum of Nubia, was dedicated to Nubian culture and civilization. It was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001, which is an architectural prize established by Aga Khan IV in 1977.

The building has three floors for displaying and housing, in addition to a library and information center. The largest part of the museum is occupied by the monumental pieces, reflecting phases of the development of Nubian culture and civilization.

3- Elephantine

Elephantine is an island on the Nile, forming part of the city of Aswan. There are several archaeological sites on the island.

The island is located just downstream of the First Cataract, at the southern border of Upper Egypt with Lower Nubia. This region above is referred to as Upper Egypt because it is further up the Nile.

The island may have received its name after its shape, which in aerial views is similar to that of an elephant tusk, or from the rounded rocks along the banks resembling elephants.

Elephantine was a fort that stood just before the first cataract of the Nile. During the Second Intermediate Period (1650–1550 BC) , the fort marked the southern border of Egypt, according to Ian Shaw in Oxford History of Ancient Egypt.

4- El Nabatat Island

Geziret En Nabatat (Plant Island) or the Botanical Island is a small, oval-shaped island in the Nile at Aswan, it was previously known as Kitchener's Island, named after Lord Kitchener who owned it as he was gifted the island, when he served as Consul-General in Egypt.

The island and gardens can be reached by felucca , a traditional wooden sailing boat, that reach the Southeastern side of the small island.

5- Mausoleum of Aga Khan

The Mausoleum of Aga Khan is the mausoleum of Aga Khan III, Sir Sultan Muhammed Shah, who died in 1957. The mausoleum is located at Aswan, along the Nile of Egypt, since Egypt was formerly the centre of power of the Fatimids. The mausoleum is built in the style of the Fatimid tombs in Cairo.

Philae is an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, downstream of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser, Egypt. Philae was originally located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex.

The ancient Egyptian name of the smaller island meant "boundary". As their southern frontier, the pharaohs of Egypt kept there a strong garrison, and it was also a barracks for Greek and Roman soldiers in their turn. The first temple structure, which was built by native pharaohs of the 30th dynasty, was the one for Hathor, a major goddess in ancient Egyptian religion.

7- Agilkia Island

An island in the reservoir of the Old Aswan Dam along the Nile River in southern Egypt; it is the present site of the relocated Ancient Egyptian temple complex of Philae. Agilkia, like the island, was the name chosen for the planned landing site on a comet by the Rosetta spacecraft mission's Philae lander.

8- El-Tabia Mosque

El-Tabia Mosque is a mosque in Aswan, Egypt. The mosque is surrounded by scenic gardens. Located amidst a park on a hill in the center of Aswan, It reveals a typical architecture of central-dome mosques having an arched entrance, flanked in this case by two minarets, and the prayer hall beneath a central dome.

9- Kom Ombo Temple

The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple in the town of Kom Ombo in Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt. It was constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty, 180–47 BC. Some additions to it were later made during the Roman period.

10- Aswan Museum

Aswan Museum is a museum in Elephantine, located on the south-eastern side of Aswan, Egypt. It opened to the public in 1912. The museum features artefacts from Nubia, which were housed there during the construction of the Aswan Dam. In 1990, a new department was inaugurated displaying findings that were discovered on Elephantine island itself, such as utensils, weapons, pottery and mummies. The museum is situated close to the Ruins of Abu, where excavations are still taking place.

Tour Name: Experience Egypt Cultural Sightseeing in 10 Days

This was the trip of a lifetime that I was able to have with my eldest son - an absolutely Read More amazing experience. To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! I left feeling like I had made some great new friends. And I can't wait to try some home-made kushari. Read Less

Egypt Tours Portal is an excellent company to use to arrange your visit to Egypt. They wor Read More k with phenomenal guides (we had Mahmoud Nour in Upper Egypt and Mohsen aka Max in Lower Egypt...I would recommend asking for these guides by name, as they were truly superb), make all the necessary arrangements in terms of drivers, covid testing, hotels, and in-country flights, and can tailor your tour to whatever it is you most want to see. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. This was the second time I have used ETP, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who expresses any interest in exploring Egypt. We especially liked that our tour group was limited to only our party, which meant we got one-on-one attention at all the sites, and allowed us to get answers to all our questions. And for those of you who are worried about safety or health in Egypt, in our experience it was extremely safe, and we never had any issues related to COVID-19. Cannot recommend Egypt Tours Portal enough. Choose them, you won't regret it. Read Less
