Last Saturday took place the second concert of KPOP in French-speaking Switzerland. The group 3YE performed in the Grande Salle in Prilly.. An intimate concert allowing a real symbiosis with the audience, both during the FanSign Event and on stage, with two EYE on stage, or the band taking phone and GIVING small gifts. This event is a success and gives us hope for future concerts and bigger productions! Our 2023 goal is the Geneva Arena at the end of the year with the band of YOUR CHOICE. For that, spread the word and give strength to our social networks, so that Korean producers and labels will trust us and see the DETERMINATION of the Swiss audience!

Lithuania & Latvia: Vilnius to Riga with Country Walkers

If last summer is any indication—and bookings for 2024 suggest that it is—parts of Europe will be as inundated with crowds as they were in 2023. The best way to avoid the hordes is to go somewhere off the beaten path, seeking out corners of Europe free of mass tourism. Here are five European trips for those seeking a respite from the madding crowd.

Lithuania & Latvia: Vilnius to Riga

Country Walkers pairs two of the Baltics’ most desirable destinations on this eight-day trip, blending rural traditions and history. Rated Easy/Moderate includes visiting castles and historic palaces and exploring some of the scenic trails into the national parks of Trakai, Curonian Spit, Žemaitija, Gauja, and Kemeri. A visit to an amber museum and a tour of one of Europe’s largest markets, guided by a Latvian chef. There is availability in June, July and August and the cost is $4,545 (prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, land-only).

Albania with Hinoki Travels.

Hinoki Travels chose Albania for its farm-to-table splendor, lesser-explored mountain trails, and warm-natured hospitality. It has put together a small group trip to Southern Albania with a theme of Provenance. Celebrating the region’s varied cultures, food & agriculture, and vast landscapes, this nine-day trip focuses on being hosted by local farmers, food producers, shepherds, local guides & small business owners. Accommodation is in guest houses in villages, and a highlight is sampling local food & wine. The adventures include hikes of five to six hours a day on rough, uneven terrain with varying elevations. There is also a rafting trip on the wild Vjosa River. The trip supports the efforts of EcoAlbania and Albanian citizens dedicated to protecting this river, one of Europe’s last wild-flowing rivers. There is one departure, September 14-22, 2024, and the cost is $3,250.

Exploring Zagoria with Wilderness Travel.

Hidden Villages of Northern Greece

The crowds may flock to the Greek Islands, but you’ll encounter far fewer tourists if you head north. Traditional Greece can still be seen in Zagoria, where stone villages sit above the Vikos Gorge. On this 12-day Wilderness Travel trip, there are hikes along shepherds' paths and across arched stone bridges that span the gorge. The itinerary includes the monasteries of Meteora, which date as far back as the 13th century. The trip concludes with a hike up Mt. Olympus, the home of the gods for the ancient Greeks. Rated Level 4+, Moderate to Strenuous, this trip features daily hikes, with accommodation in hotels and simple pensions. Hikes are mainly on old mule trails and vary from 3-5 hours daily at 3,000 to 9,403 feet. There is an October 2024 departure, and the price is $4,595.

Hiker in Tatra Mountains, Poland.

Poland & Slovakia Walking & Hiking Tour

Backroads has organized this six-day national parks adventure from Kraków to the Tatra Mountains, the dramatic natural border between Slovakia and Poland. Rated levels 1-4 (out of 5), it’s a hike through mountain passes and lakes in a region dominated by the 25 peaks of the Tatras that reach more than 8,000 feet. Traverse from Poland to Slovakia on foot while exploring the Pieninys range dramatic scenery, explore the region known as Lesser Poland, and hike among the mountain lakes, waterfalls, and fields of sheep in Slovakia's High Tatras. The journey concludes in Kraków, a World Heritage site city. There are departures in August and September, and the price is $4,499.

Bran Castle, associated with the Dracula legend and Bram Stoker.

Romania: Transylvania & Beyond

This trip from Wild Frontiers begins in Bucharest, Romania’s capital, and goes into the heart of the great ranges of the Carpathian Mountains. Cultural crossroads of Central, Eastern, and South-eastern Europe for centuries, Romania has an abundance of well-preserved medieval towns, castles, and churches. The trip crosses the Transalpina, visits the World Heritage setting of Horezu Monastery, and goes through the old Saxon heartlands of Transylvania. It includes visiting the well-preserved town of Sibiu and the rural villages of Maramureş before crossing the Carpathians again to see the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. In Moldavia, guests hear the legends and vampire myths of Sighişoara and Bran, the latter of which is associated with Bram Stoker and the Dracula legend. There is also time to explore the UNESCO sight of Viscri and the medieval heart of Brasov. This 15-day trip has a departure in September and is rated Low/Moderate for fitness, with a cost of $4,138.

I'm planning to spend $5,000 to see Taylor Swift in Europe with my kids. Our floor tickets, hotel, and flights are set to cost less than our nosebleed seats in the US did.

  • I saw Taylor Swift on the US leg of The Eras Tour, and two nosebleed seats cost us $5,000.
  • My daughter and I loved the show, so I scored us floor seats for one of Swift's Poland shows.
  • Our European trip includes three VIP Swift tickets and is set to be cheaper than our seats in the US.

Insider Today

When Taylor Swift first announced her Eras Tour , I laughed when I heard colleagues had cleared their work schedules to buy tickets.

I couldn't understand why they were looking for tickets for shows hours away. I liked a few of Swift's songs, but I wasn't a "Swiftie" and didn't understand the frenzy.

That all changed when my daughter started asking intensely for tickets . And once The Eras Tour started, it became clear that it was the concert of the century. It was also nearly impossible to get tickets.

Seeing the US tour was difficult and expensive, but the show turned me into a full-on Swiftie

I didn't want my kid to miss out on this generation-defining event, but I couldn't stomach spending $4,000 or more on the resale market for two nosebleed seats on top of travel costs to another city.

Fortunately, five cousins chipped in to buy my daughter tickets for her birthday.

My daughter, a devoted Swiftie, predictably loved every second of The Eras Tour. At first, I wasn't sure how I would get through a 3 ½-hour show by an artist I barely knew — but I left in awe of Swift's talent.

Related stories

In the weeks that followed, I listened exclusively to Swift. On a trip to Nashville, I sang my heart out to Swift's songs at the Country Music Hall of Fame. I wondered whether I would be able to see her perform again, this time going all in.

Getting tickets to see Swift in Poland was easier than I expected

As soon as Swift announced international dates on her tour in June, I took the first of many steps to get tickets to one of her shows abroad. I set my sights on a show in Warsaw, Poland, for several reasons.

My children and I are Polish citizens but have never set foot in the country. I've wanted to go for years, and snagging Swift tickets would allow me to finally make the trip. I reasoned that Warsaw was unlikely to be as popular as marquee destinations like Paris. It's also a less expensive city than many other international stops on The Eras Tour.

Also, tickets for the Warsaw show were not being sold through Ticketmaster. I found the idea of not having to deal with the company that botched sales to the US leg of the tour very appealing.

A few days before tickets went on sale, I got a code for the chance to buy tickets before they became available to the rest of the public. Based on how popular presales were in the US , I knew I was unlikely to get tickets, but I set an alarm for 5 a.m. anyway.

Much to my surprise, I was able to enter the ticket-buying portal right away. I scored three VIP floor seats for the first night of Swift's Eras Tour in Warsaw for less than $1,000. My daughter, my son, and I started making friendship bracelets immediately to exchange with other concert-goers, an Eras Tour tradition.

Our trip hasn't happened yet, but I already know it'll be worth it

Although tickets to the Warsaw show were not cheap, the total cost plus our European trip is set to be about the same as or less than the two nosebleed seats I got when I saw Swift in the US.

I hope to use credit-card points to book our flights, but even if I don't, I estimate the total cost of the trip could be from $4,000 to $5,000. This isn't significantly more than my family usually spends on our annual family vacation, and I have more than a year to save.

However, unlike other family vacations, this one comes with the chance to explore our roots and see a new part of the world. I never would have guessed that Swift would be what finally got me to Poland, but it's just one more reason for me to love her.

The Masters 2024: By the numbers

Following the conclusion of the 88th Masters Tournament , we take a look at some of the key numbers from the first men’s Major Championship of 2024.

The Masters 2024-2148641983

Nobody in the 89-player field managed to card four rounds under par, highlighting the challenge at Augusta National Golf Club last week.

Ludvig Åberg was the only player in the 89-player field to record a sub-70 round during Friday’s second round.

Neal Shipley was the lone amateur to make the cut, capping his week by playing alongside Tiger Woods.

Scottie Scheffler won his second Major Championship and with it his second Green Jacket, two years on from his first at Augusta National.

Of the four DP World Tour members to make their Masters debut this year, three (Åberg, Matthieu Pavon and Nicolai Højgaard) made the cut

Aberg is just the fourth Masters rookie since Fuzzy Zoeller’s win in 1979 to finish solo second.

Scheffler is the fourth-youngest ever to win the Masters a second time, behind Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros.

Tommy Fleetwood jumps to fourth in the Race to Dubai Rankings following his tie for third at his eighth Masters appearance.

DP World Tour winners Ryan Fox and Min Woo Lee were among the four players to make more than one eagle across the week along with Patrick Cantlay and Kurt Kitayama.

Åberg's new career-high world ranking after his impressive Major debut in Georgia.

By finishing in the top 12 and ties, Pavon earned himself a return trip to Augusta to compete in next year’s Masters alongside fellow DP World Tour members Åberg, Fleetwood and Hatton.

It was also his best finish at a Major, bettering his tie for 25th at the U.S. Open in 2018.

The number of DP World Tour members who made the cut in the first men's Major of the season.

The number of birdies made by Højgaard – the most of any player in the field.

Pavon was another DP World Tour member to climb to a new career high in the Official World Golf Ranking, rising from 25th to 22nd.

Reflections on Travel to Europe – Part One

Photo collage - background of United Kingdom and European Union flags. Various photos of Dr. Califf in different meetings with EU and U.K. delegates.

By: Robert M. Califf, M.D., Commissioner of Food and Drugs

Recently I had the privilege of official travel to the U.K. and European Union (EU) with our extraordinary global affairs team. We visited with The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and representatives of the U.K. medical device, digital and pharmaceutical industries in London and then moved on to Oxford for an exchange and update on the conduct of clinical trials and mutual concerns about cybersecurity. We then traveled to Brussels, where we visited the U.S. Mission to the EU and met with the European Commission (EC), European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and representatives of European medical products and food industries. Finally, we spent time in Amsterdam meeting with the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Robert M. Califf, M.D.

While there were important exchanges relating to all of these commodities regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the common theme of both our previous trip to Singapore and India and this excursion was the value of international collaboration and exchange of perspectives. We all want safe and nutritious food, safe and effective medical products, and freedom from the death and disability caused by tobacco products, and we are all increasingly dependent on our complex, interdigitated supply chains. We deal with the same fundamental issues as the regulators and public health officials we met with, and increasingly, the changes in our computing and data infrastructure are enabling us to share and exchange information much more quickly across the global expanse.       The dominant message in Europe about medical devices was a major concern from the industry about fragmentation of regulation in Europe relative to the more centralized U.S. system for device regulation. It’s been interesting during my career on all sides of device development, use in practice, and regulation, to experience a significant reversal of views of the industry about the U.S.-U.K.-EU comparisons. Early in my career, Europe was the primary focus for early device development, largely related to opinions about regulatory stringency that many believed led to a faster, less demanding path to market. Jeff Shuren, M.D., Director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) and the CDRH team have done a remarkable job of maintaining regulatory quality while using interactions with industry and the clinical practice world to create an innovative and vibrant ecosystem in the U.S. There is awareness in the U.K. and EU that more effective, predictable regulation can enable the industry to thrive while continuously improving the follow-up and surveillance of devices. Here, the remarkable success of the recent annual meeting of the International Medical Device Regulators Forum in Washington raised hopes that global, streamlined adoption of common regulatory approaches is a viable long-term goal.      Regardless of one’s view of BREXIT, one result has been that the MHRA has gone from being one part of the larger EU regulatory system working with EMA, to an agency that must operate on its own to regulate all drugs, devices and vapes in the U.K. Adjusting to the increase in workload has put major stress on the MHRA and the EMA initially lost a significant amount of regulatory capacity when the alliance changed. The MHRA will be losing a remarkably capable leader when Dame June Raine, DBE, retires this year. She is a strong leader who has held it together in a difficult time of transition. I’m sure the U.K. will find a new leader from its reservoir of medical product expertise to match the competent leadership of Emer Cooke at EMA.

Meanwhile, the EMA has regrouped from its London headquarters to a beautiful building in Amsterdam (the largest green wall in that part of Europe). Our drugs and biologics discussions with the EC and EMA covered a range of topics—access, shortages, generics, post-market evidence and rare disease needs among others. The opportunity for synergy across these domains is substantial and I look forward to the upcoming FDA-EU bilateral meeting at the FDA White Oak Campus in Maryland. And by the way, EFSA will be included at that meeting for the first time.

The regulation of food was not a part of the U.K. trip, but it was evident in our EU discussions that food safety and nutrition are “front burner” issues. The cultural values of Europe are heterogeneous—it’s a challenge to reach agreement among 27 countries—and in aggregate there are significant differences with the approach in the U.S. But we have much more in common than our differences. Huge effects on our societies will follow from how we deal with the promise and risks of new biotechnologies related to agriculture and sharpening our understanding of the impact of ultraprocessing on food cost and access, while getting on top of the evolving concerns about its impact on nutrition and disease. And we have historic differences in the manner in which we assess the risk of chemical substances in the food—understanding the best way forward will be important as we face growing concerns about the environment and its impact on individual and population health.

A final reflection: I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the chance to spend personal time with our Office of Global Policy and Strategy (OGPS) colleagues as we have traveled and interacted with others. This is a dedicated and talented group of people working every day to advance the FDA’s mission in complex, and often difficult circumstances. Taking a foreign post includes the amazing experience of living in a different place with a different culture, but it also brings stress and complexity with family and personal adjustment. Additionally, our OGPS colleagues have to deal with significant differences in regulations that guide our different product centers, and the foreign post employees must represent all these perspectives as they represent us in the field. As if that’s not enough, the multidimensional priorities of the FDA, the rest of the foreign mission and the needs and pressures of the host countries and regions require an adaptive mindset. I have asked Mark Abdoo and Kim Trzeciak to put together a strategic document on global affairs that looks forward to the next decade to shape our plans and requests for funding.        In conclusion, I ended the trips with appreciation for the importance of our global mission, reaffirmation of the high regard in which the FDA is held around the world, and admiration for the people who carry the FDA torch around the world. I’ll follow up with specific blogs with observations about the U.K. and EU in the near future.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

European cities hope jet-setting Taylor Swift fans will splash the cash for Eras tour

The superstar arrives in Europe next month – and Swifties, tourist boards and venues are already preparing

T im Brown, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 34, may not consider themselves bona fide “Swifties”, but when it was announced last June that Taylor Swift would be visiting their corner of the globe this summer they could not resist joining the scramble for a pair of tickets.

A post-pandemic appetite for live music events has fuelled huge worldwide interest in the American singer-songwriter’s Eras tour, which surpassed in $1bn sales in November to become the highest-grossing series of concerts in history.

The pop culture event of the summer will arrive in Europe next month, kicking off in Paris on 9 May and wrapping up in London on 20 August with 49 dates in between in Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The unique nature of the tour’s ticketing system, which was tweaked after a number of hitches last year, means there will be a mass movement of travelling fans who will not only be Swiftie in affiliation but swift-like in their willingness to travel across the continent.

In expectation of intense demand, Ticketmaster introduced a pre-registration system that rewarded some early applicants with access codes to the ticket sale proper, via staggered windows for each city.

Notionally designed to prioritise genuine fans over “scalpers” – people who buy and resell tickets for a quick profit – the pre-sales system also meant many fans registered for tickets in multiple destinations across Europe to increase their chances.

Taylor Swift performs on stage amid a sea of confetti

Tim and Marcella, who live in Norwich, registered not just for the nearest concerts – in London and Liverpool – but also in Amsterdam and Lisbon. The pair got lucky with a pair of €91 tickets in the Portuguese capital and have turned the trip into a weekend break. “I used to live in Lisbon so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Tim said. “We booked ourselves flights and four nights’ accommodation the same day.” They are far from alone.

Katie Soo, the chief business officer of DICE, a rival ticketing company, said: “The excitement and uncertainty inherent in the ticket-purchasing process might have inadvertently incentivised fans to apply for tickets in multiple cities, thereby increasing the likelihood of travelling across Europe to attend the concerts.”

Hotel prices

Several European cities have already reported a sharp rise in demand for hotel and short-term rental accommodation over the summer, when the Swift hurricane will arrive. In Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff, rooms at the Travelodge chain around Swift’s June dates have been sold out since August 2023, a month after tickets for the shows went on sale.

In Paris, where fans anticipate Swift to debut an updated version of the Eras show with songs from the new Tortured Poets Department album, 80% of hotels and apartments listed on Booking.com are already full up. In Warsaw on 2 August, only 9% of hotels listed on the same site are still available.

Not all of the 18 cities covered by the Eras tour are obvious tourism destinations. From 17-19 July, Swift will play three concerts at the 65,000-capacity home ground of the football club Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in Ruhr valley, western Germany. The city’s less-than-familiar name prompted one US chatshow host to quip that “the place might not even exist”.

Yet even in Germany’s rust belt the influx of Swift fans is temporarily transforming the hotel market: any two-bedroom apartments that remain available are going for €800-2,000 a night, with cheaper accommodation available only in surrounding cities that are just as off the usual tourist track as Gelsenkirchen, such as Essen, Bochum or Herne.

Cities with stricter rules on allowing Airbnb-style holiday lets and a more limited stock of short-term rental apartments are reporting a particularly marked increase in rates during Swift’s visit, with about 30% year-on-year spikes in rental rates in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Milan, according to AirDNA, a data analytics company specialising in the short-term rentals market.

Of all the tour’s European stops, Vienna is experiencing the most notable impact on its rental market, with booking rates for the nights of Swift’s concerts recorded in February 44% higher than at the same point the previous year. By the end of March the number of nights booked in the Austrian capital for the length of Swift’s stay in the second week of August had risen by 430% compared with the same period in 2023.

When Luke Tilden’s wife, Tatjana, suggested last summer that the couple buy their 13- and 15-year-old daughters, Lena and Maya, tickets to a Taylor Swift gig for Christmas, the 53-year-old Briton initially waved it off. “There’s no chance in hell we’d get a ticket without paying through our noses, I thought,” said Tilden, who works as an interpreter at the European parliament in Brussels.

But after pre-registering for tickets in London, Paris and Munich, the Tildens got unexpectedly lucky for four tickets in southern Germany and have turned the concert visit into a mini-holiday: “We’ll visit the in-laws in Bavaria, enjoy the countryside, do a bit of hiking.”

The hope in cities across Europe is that this will be replicated on a massive scale, with fans’ excitement translating into generous spending sprees on food, shopping and leisure. In Stockholm, for example, where authorities are expecting 159,000 visitors to arrive from 135 countries in mid-May, the chamber of commerce has forecast a spending boost of €50m. “We hope the whole town will buzz from the Eras tour,” said Tomas Andersson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital’s tourism board.

Whether fans will necessarily act like ordinary tourists, however, is up for debate. “Pop-culture tourists do not necessarily care about traditional buildings and authentic restaurants,” said Maria Lexhagen, a professor at the European Tourism Research Institute, Mid Sweden University.

“Joining up with other fan communities is stronger motivation, as is the idea that they might get closer to the stars themselves. Many of them will map out where Swift is spending her time in the city – they will seek out seemingly marginal but meaningful places like back alleys or coffee shops.” Venues may be hoping for a repeat of Sydney in February, when Swift swept into an unassuming Italian restaurant in the suburbs and sent its name into global media headlines.

A view of the exterior of Pellegrino 2000 in Sydney

In Stockholm the tourism board said it was expecting bookshops and secondhand clothes stores, rather than museums and royal palaces, to attract most of the arriving visitors. Some venues are being proactive: one restaurant within walking distance of the multipurpose Friends Arena in the Solna municipality is putting on a “Taylor Swift brunch experience” with a karaoke stage; the waterfront nightclub Debaser is hosting a pre-concert party on 16 May, an all-ages all-day party with a Swift-themed quiz on 19 May and an afterparty the day after.

Environment

As the Swift circus rolls across the continent, the transport infrastructure of urban centres will also be put to the test. Around the tour’s three-night stop in Dublin at the end of June, Irish Rail has announced additional late-night services to Cork and Limerick to meet an expected increase in demand. Extra tram and bus services are likely to be announced nearer the time.

Unlike rail operators, most airlines do not have capacity to charter additional flights. Due to yield management – airlines adjusting prices based on expected demand – a scramble for airborne journeys into cities that host the Eras tour is more likely to result in more expensive tickets rather than additional flights.

Officials at Lisbon airport said no additional flights had been chartered around Swift’s concerts on 24 and 25 May but that demand would probably be reflected in slightly higher load factors. A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol said general aviation slots could be requested at short notice but nothing out of the ordinary had been logged so far.

Calculating the environmental impact of the tour with any certainty was difficult, experts said. “We can expect that some Swift fans will travel a long way to see one, if not several, shows across Europe”, said Stefan Gössling, a professor of tourism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. “But measuring the environmental impact of these trips is extremely difficult – it would involve a lot of guesswork.”

Swift fans queue to buy a merchandise

This did not mean the carbon footprint was negligible. “Every flight taken by a person adds to demand and hence influences supply considerations,” Gössling said. “The greater the demand, the more aircrafts are in service.”

The pop star’s carbon footprint is easier to estimate. Swift owns two jets by the French manufacturer Dassault, whose journeys are trackable. During the 2023 leg of the Eras tour, Swift’s planes spent 166 hours crisscrossing the US in about 75 individual journeys, though it is possible they were used by people other than the singer.

According to data available through the open-access aviation tracker ADS-B exchange, Swift’s jets caused carbon emissions of about 2,830 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent over the course of the US Eras tour – about 1,700 times the annual contribution of an average person.

A spokesperson for Swift told US media last year that in advance of the tour’s start in March 2023, the pop star bought more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates that allow purchasers to compensate for emissions by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions, though recent studies have questioned the efficacy of these schemes.
