Our Interview with ‘AGT’ Finalist, Brian King Joseph

Brian King Joseph took the America’s Got Talent stage by storm in his audition this season. Not only did he share his amazing talent on the electric violin, but he also told the inspiring story of his journey with neuropathy. Known for his smile and high energy, Brian King Joseph continues to up her performances each week. Now an AGT Finalist, we talked to Brian about his experience on the show so far, his insane practice schedule, who he wants to collaborate with (hint: she was on AGT too!) and what we can expect from him in the Finals.

Talent Recap : “We have to start with last night’s Semifinals performance. It was amazing!”

Brian King Joseph : “Thank you. Thank you so much!”

TR : “How did you feel when Simon said you could win this whole thing last night?”

BKJ : “I felt incredibly motivated to do exactly that. I mean honestly, coming into this competition, from the date of my audition, I’ve always looked at wanting to win the whole thing. For me, I really think it’s important. I have to believe in myself. For all the things I’m going through and for what I’m doing on the stage, you really just have to have 100%, complete belief in yourself. So to have Simon say that to me, that he thinks I could win the whole competition, it really spurs me on to do that. It shows me that what I’ve been doing has worked in terms of believing in myself. I can really feel like I have the support of people like Simon and the rest of the judges. It really just motivates me.”

TR : “And you definitely have some fans over at Talent Recap! So what made you decide to audition for AGT this season?”

BKJ : “Well honestly, I’ve always loved America’s Got Talent . I’ve always watched it. I actually auditioned for the past three years to get on the show. Those past few times, I was still very sick, and it was a lot harder for me to do the things that I’m doing now. I feel like this year was just the right year. I really had a breakthrough in terms of being able to just get out of bed and go out there and chase my dreams. Honestly, I auditioned for a few talent shows and TV shows this year but AGT was the one that, when I got the call back, I said, ‘This is everything. I have to do this.’”

TR : “What’s it like being on the stage this year after going through all those auditions?”

BKJ : “This year, I’m on the Dolby stage. There’s this magic there where I feel like I’ve found a long-lost friend, something I’ve always dreamed about. Walking on that stage is really, really an experience for me. Even when there’s no one in the crowd. But the moments when the whole crowd is there, like last night, I felt like I was in my own movie.”

TR : “Yeah, there was some pretty epic staging happening last night.”

BKJ : “Absolutely. And for me, it’s just a blur. The things that I really remember when I’m performing, from my perspective, is those smiling faces. Those smiling faces looking back at me are the defining moments of my performance. Inside me, something happens. I feel a fire and a drive and a passion just magnified by the hundreds when I’m right there, in front of people, and they’re really connecting with me. It’s such a beautiful vibe.”

TR : “It’s crazy all you can do up there on violin. How many bows do you actually go through in a week?”

BKJ : “When we’re practicing like this for AGT, I go through about three bows in a week.”

TR : “And how much time a week do you spend practicing for your next performance?”

BKJ : “A LOT . Literally my day is pretty much completely consumed by practice. So when I wake up, I already have my song stuck in my head. And I play it over and over and over again. Literally from the moment I wake up, I’m in front of my speakers with my violin and I practice until I have just a few minutes left to get ready to go out and practice again.

On the way to the Dolby rehearsal space, I’m literally replaying my practice recording over and over again. On repeat. Like I think it would drive any normal person mad. But for me, practicing is so much remembering those muscle memory points, just to remember when I should be triggering them. It’s a big mental thing as well. Even when I don’t have my violin in my hand, I’m listening over and over again and air-fingering it to make sure I can do it and that I’ll remember it. It’s really all about memorization. Once I get out there, I don’t have any sheet music. It has to be perfect. That’s really my whole day. And honestly, it’s a lot. Especially for me.

But at the same time, I’ve found such a joy and such a new drive, that I’m able to push through all of this because of the passion that I have and because of the determination I have for doing this and for winning this competition. So really at the end of the day I’m happy because I’m able to push myself to new limits that I didn’t think I could. And now, I can see that I can just keep going up and up and up.”

TR : “That shows in your performances too! You’re known for your smile and energy. What motivates you through everything you’ve overcome to have that positive attitude?”

BKJ : “A big part of why I drive myself so hard, especially now, is that I really don’t want to be defined by my condition. I really don’t want to be defined by the hardships I go through. I want to be defined by what I make of them and how I can overcome them. It’s about what I can do in spite of what I’m going through. I’m not defined by my sickness. I really think that it’s important for me to bring joy and happiness to other people because for me, going through everything I’ve gone through, I’ve found that just having somebody to connect to or feeling like you’re not alone can make the difference of an entire lifetime.

And for me, knowing that I can make that happen with my music, that’s a big reason that I smile. Because isn’t that amazing? Isn’t that awesome for me to be blessed to bring that to them?”

TR : “I absolutely agree, it is an amazing gift you have and the fact that you can now share that with others is incredible.”

BKJ : “Yeah, I believe that everyone has something to contribute to this world. Regardless of the hardships or anything that we’re going through, everyone is special in their own way. We’re all here for a reason.”

TR : So shifting gears, you started as a violinist doing classical music. What made you transition to covering popular music?”

BKJ : “Well, I played classical for quite a long time, ever since I was four years old. I had gone through and learned all the performance pieces. I even competed at the state level quite a few times and won three blue state ribbons for competing even above my age group in classical music. At that time, I really looked up to a lot of classical composers, such as Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Paganini. The stories of these guys and how they would release their music and how they changed the world, I just wanted to do the same thing.

Looking into this new age that we’re in with modern music and what people are listening to, that’s not what’s dominating the charts. Somewhere in there, the translation of a lot of people’s favorite instrument, the violin, was lost. I feel like it was long overdue for this to happen. I myself was looking for the music I am making now when I was younger but there wasn’t much going on.

So I started playing with a guitar friend of mine. We took it to the street trying to make some money. It was there, on the street, where I really started to have fun with it. I got away from just playing what was already written and trying to write something myself. I think that’s where I found my groove. It’s a new style of playing violin. To me, it’s really cool! I really want to make other people interested in violin for a lot of different music genres. Violin is beautiful, and people love the instrument, but it’s taken a backseat in pop and modern music. I want to bring it back to the forefront. Violin should be played in an amazing and special way. It doesn’t have to be in the background. So I figured if no one else was going to do it, I would do it.”

TR : “Is there anyone specifically you look up to as a performer?”

BKJ : “Absolutely, I have so many people I look up to as performers. But one of my absolute favorites would be Itzhak Perlman. I studied him so much growing up, I think it’s perfect the way he relates to his violin and tells the story. He’s a legend and he’s so respected in the community. So he’s my number one. I’ve learned so much from him just by watching him.

And then I would also say I really look up to Hans Zimmer. He’s such an inspiration to me. I want to be just like him when I grow up. He is just perfect. The way he is able to bring emotion into movies with his soundtracks is incredible. It’s all about that connection and connecting with people. That’s why I love these guys!

Oh and also Vanessa-Mae! She’s such a cool electric violinist. I remember as a kid watching her play these crazy versions of classical songs with his electric violin. It was so loud and powerful. She’s amazing.”

TR : “You’ve played with Machine Gun Kelly and toured with Fetty Wap before, but if you could collaborate with anyone on a song, who would you want to collaborate with?”

BKJ : “You know who I think would be so cool to collaborate with? And I think it would be legendary. Me and…drumroll…Lindsey Stirling! She brought violin playing to AGT before and I thought it was amazing. And she’s done so much for the violin community since then! I think it would be a really cool collaboration, don’t you?”

TR : “Oh yeah, I think it would be awesome! Now to wrap it up here, what’s your strategy for the Finals next week if you make it through?”

BKJ : “I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve. I think that what I’m going to do for sure is just bring the highest energy show that AGT has ever seen from me. I definitely am going to work on something and make it my own as always. We’ve got a few surprises in there but you’re gonna have to wait and see.”

And we can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next week! Brian King Joseph will be in the Finals, competing to take the  AGT crown. The competition will be tough, but at least Simon thinks he has what it takes to win it all!

‘America's Got Talent' Finalist Brian King Joseph Attributes DC Roots to His Success

• Nicknamed the "king of violin" for his talents, Brian King Joseph grew up all around the D.C. area.

Joseph started his journey at the Chinatown Metro station, playing for Washington Capitals fans after games.

• Joseph's first performance was at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street, he said.

Electric violinist Brian King Joseph is just one performance away from winning "America's Got Talent," but the self-taught musician got his start here in Washington, D.C.

"I love D.C. It has shaped me to come out here," Joseph said.

Nicknamed the "king of violin"  for his talents, Joseph grew up all around the D.C. area, moving between Northeast D.C., Silver Spring and Bethesda.

Joseph attributes much of his success to the support he receives from the people of D.C.

"The community of D.C. accepted, and honestly, fed me over those years. Literally putting food in my mouth, putting money in my case," the musician said.

Joseph said his first performance was at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street. He even played for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

"D.C. always has the most special place in my heart," he said. "I owe D.C. everything."

Joseph said he has plans to start a charity if he wins the talent show's $1 million prize. He wants to give kids who can’t afford music school or lessons an opportunity to find their passion. 

"These kids shouldn't be forgotten," Joseph said.

Violinist Brian King Joseph Overcomes Rare Nerve Disease To Perform On AGT

Talented violinist Brian King Joseph returns to the America’s Got Talent stage for an incredible original performance.

We first met Brian when he competed on the 2018 season of AGT. That’s when we learned that Brian started to play violin when he was just a boy. But, he was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, a rare nerve disease that leads to the deterioration of nerves in the fingers, feet and spine.

This condition left Brian in a lot of pain and he was bedridden for much of high school and college. By the time he was 22, Brian reached a point where he was tired of the pain and letting his condition rule his life. He decided to turn to his childhood love and picked up the violin again.

The music truly made Brian feel alive again and he gradually started to improve. He decided to audition for America’s Got Talent and made it all the way to the finals where he placed third.

Since that time, Brian has toured the world and even had enough money to afford his healthcare. Now, he’s playing better than ever and he’s back to try and win the title on America’s Got Talent: Champions. This special format of competition features over 40 acts from all across the globe.

The list of contenders includes past winners, finalists and fan-favorites from the entire Got Talent franchise. Brian performed an original song that had the entire audience on their feet.

After the performance, Simon said ‘Every time I see you, I am blown away.’ And I have to agree. Brian King Joseph definitely has what it takes to go all the way. What do you think?

Brian King Joseph is a violinist who gave electrifying performances on the ‘AGT’ stage. Despite suffering from a rare neuropathy that causes chronic pain, he managed to wow the judges and audience with his passionate, high-energy violin performances. Since the show, Brian has continued to build his career as a musician. He has released original music, combining modern electronic elements with classical violin, creating a unique and captivating sound, including “Hallelujah,” “Super Gremlin (Violin Version),” “Finesse (Freestyle),” “Moonlight” and “Purgatory (Instrumental).

Courtney Hadwin is an English singer with a powerful and soulful voice who left a lasting impression on the ‘AGT’ audience. Often drawing comparisons to legendary artists like Janis Joplin, her rock ‘n’ roll energy and unique vocal style earned her a spot in the finals. After the show, she signed a record deal with Syco Entertainment and released her debut single, “Pretty Little Thing” in 2019, followed by her debut album ‘The Cover Sessions’ released in October 2019, which featured live covers of hits by singers like Lil Nas X, Harry Styles, Lewis Capaldi, and Jonas Brothers.

Courtney also earned third place in week 2 of the ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’. Courtney’s single “Breakable” dropped on February 28, 2023, followed by the release of “Call Me Back” and “That Girl Don’t Live Here, all of which were well-received by her fans.

Duo Transcend Are Still Performing

Mary and Tyce Nielsen are a married couple who showcased their breathtaking aerial stunts and acrobatics on ‘AGT,’ under the name of Duo Transcend. Tyce, who was partially blind because of keratoconus, depended on Mary to execute daring moves high above the stage, making their performances filled with trust, love, and suspense. After the show ended, Duo Transcend performed at several events, including festivals and corporate shows, and earned accolades for their jaw-dropping routines.

Fortunately, a specialized doctor in Los Angeles reached out to them and offered to treat Tyce’s condition. Even though his sight didn’t get better, the doctor was able to stop it from getting worse. They returned to ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ in 2020 and performed even more impressive acts, featuring blindfolded aerial tricks. They finished as runners-up, second only to V. Unbeatable. In 2021, they joined Deadly Games for a guest performance on ‘AGT’, which led to both groups participating in the Las Vegas residency at the Luxor Resort. Duo Transcend auditioned for ‘Spain’s Got Talent: All-Stars’ in 2023 but was unable to reach the final round.

Glennis Grace is Focusing on Her Singing Career

Glennis Grace is a Dutch singer who won the hearts of ‘AGT’ audiences with her powerful vocals and her incredible renditions of Whitney Houston songs. Since her time on the show, she has continued pursuing her music career and released several albums, including ‘Walk on Water’ and ‘WHITNEY – a Tribute by Glennis Grace’. Glennis has also been invited to perform at various events and venues, where she has captivated the audience with her remarkable voice.

In July 2021, it was announced that Glennis Grace would be replacing Jan Smit as a Coach on season 12 of ‘The Voice of Holland’. However, only after two episodes, the series was suspended indefinitely. On February 12, 2022, Glennis, along with two others, was arrested for a fight with adult supermarket employees at an Amsterdam Jumbo store, for which she received 200 hours of community service. Since 2014, she has also been a member of the group ‘Ladies of Soul’, which comprises three other women: Edsilia Rombley, Berget Lewis, and Candy Dulfer. The group performs original as well as cover songs and sell out shows consistently.

Michael Ketterer is a Pediatric Mental Health Nurse Now

Michael Ketterer is a pediatric nurse and a father of six who moved the judges with his heartfelt performances on ‘AGT’. His inspiring backstory and emotional connection to the songs resonated with viewers, leading him to the finals. However, just a day after securing fifth place in the season, he faced a domestic violence arrest in Los Angeles. However, no charges were filed in connection with this arrest, and he was released the next day.

Following his time on the show, he has been releasing his music and continuing to bring positive change in the world. He has released two singles since he left ‘AGT,’ “Rebels” and “Spirits Lead Me.” Currently, he has been working as a pediatric mental health nurse at the CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange County, California. Additionally, Michael and his wife, Ivey, have lovingly adopted five children through the Jockey Being Family network.

Samuel J. Comroe is Focusing on His Stand-Up Career

Samuel J. Comroe is a stand-up comedy who brought humor and laughter to the ‘AGT’ stage with his witty and relatable jokes. He often talked about his personal challenges with Tourette syndrome and turned it into comedy gold. Following the show’s end, he has been using his platform to promote inclusivity and raise awareness about his condition. He has been touring across the US, making people laugh while breaking down stereotypes and stigma.

Samuel returned for ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ and received standing ovations from the judges. However, he didn’t receive enough votes and was eliminated before he could reach the night’s Top 3. Other than this, he also featured on All Def Digital’s Comedy Originals and won the Ricky Gervais’ Comedy Competition and the San Francisco Comedy Competition. Samuel’s YouTube channel has over 100k subscribers, where he posts comedy videos and cooking videos with his daughter.

Shin Lim is Still Performing

Known for his sleight of hand and mind-boggling card tricks, Shin Lim had impeccable skill and presentation style that earned him the title of season 13 winner. After that, the talented magician enjoyed a skyrocketing career in magic. He has performed on some of the most prestigious stages worldwide, including his own residency in Las Vegas. He also got married to fellow magician Casey Thomas in August 2019. Post-AGT, Lim was able to secure a long-term Las Vegas residency in October 2019 at the Mirage Casino Hotel’s Terry Fator Theatre, where he currently performs.

Other than this, Lim has toured with a theatrical magician troupe, The Illusionists and embarked on his US tour in 2020. He has guest-starred on multiple talk shows, including ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ ‘The Today Show’, and ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’. He also returned to the ‘AGT’ stage as a special appearance, contributing to the magic tricks of contestants Marc Spelmann and Colin Cloud.

Vicki Barbolak is Spending Time With Her Family Today

Vicki Barbolak is a unique comedian with a “trailer nasty” persona who brought her unapologetic humor to the AGT stage. Her funny observations and quirky style delighted judges as well as audiences throughout the season. After the show ended, she continued performing stand-up comedy, touring, and entertaining audiences across the country. In 2019, she launched her ‘Trailer Nasty Tour’ and even participated in season 1 of ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’, but left in the first week. She was also invited to compete on ‘Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions’, but her stint on the show ended in the fifth week.

Vicki is also an ordained minister who founded Wedding Chapel to Go, a company that organizes weddings, anniversaries, and vow renewal experiences. She has been a guest speaker at several conferences and organizations and was one of the six comedians selected for ‘Jenny’s Comedy Divas’ on the ‘Jenny Jones Show’. The talented comedian has been living in a trailer for 25+ years and is married to pianist Lou Brockman. Currently, she is living at the Rancho Calevero Mobile Home Park in Oceanside, California, but has also purchased a pink Vegas trailer.

Zurcaroh, The Group is Touring Worldwide Now

Zurcaroh is a high-energy dance group hailing from Austria that performed breathtaking choreography and storytelling through dance on the AGT stage. They had intricate routines and a large ensemble that transported the audience to another world. Post-AGT, they have continued to wow audiences with their dance routines and have performed at various events and venues worldwide, including one at the Royal Variety Performance in Lonon on December 10, 2019.

This show was part of their annual charity event and was attended by Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. The group was invited to join ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ but declined the offer due to prior commitments. In 2023, they toured all over the world and performed ‘Desert Awakening’ in the opening ceremony of the IWF World Championships, Riyadh, in September.

Electric violinist Brian King Joseph takes on ‘Heartless’ during ‘America’s Got Talent’ Finals: ‘Take me on tour, Kanye!’ [WATCH]

Twenty-seven-year-old electric violinist Brian King Joseph played his way to the “America’s Got Talent” Finals with his bold song choices, and his performance Tuesday night was no exception. Brian took on Kanye West ‘s “Heartless” in an exciting performance that even featured red-hot flames behind him. “Take me on tour, Kanye! Let’s go!” Brian shouted after his act. Will Brian be named the winner of “AGT” 2018? Howie Mandel : “What an amazing — I can’t believe that we opened the show with what I would consider a closer. You know, that’s the way you need to close a show. That was epic. The production, your playing, your performance, the sound. It was truly amazing and that was like a drop the bow moment, you know? You just set the bar for the whole evening, young man. Good luck, everybody else.”

Mel B : “Yes! Oh, Brian King, I always get so excited when I hear your name ’cause I know that you are gonna deliver. You are 100% the best violinist performer of all time, I think. You just ooze confidence and excitement. And you know what was really cool? The very start of when you started your performance, we got to see those eyes of yours. They are so dreamy. Hands down, one of your best performances. Well done, my love.”

Heidi Klum : “Brian Joseph King [sic], you fiddled yourself into the finale. You really, really did. Really, really well. You’re so unique. You’re so lovable. And I have my fingers and my toes crossed for you. So good luck.”

Simon Cowell : “Well, you know how to make an entrance, don’t you, Brian? I haven’t got much time. I’m gonna say this. Last week was sensational. This was better. This is everything this show should be, which is someone who starts off good, ends up amazing. Look, I think you’ve got a real shot here. I think this show — I hope — will change your life. You deserve it. Thank you for coming on our show with your talent.”

In his “AGT” live blog , our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the performance: “Electric violinist Brian King Joseph will kick off the finals, defying the pain of his progressing peripheral neuropathy, for a chance at $1 million. With a bright light shining behind him and dressed in white, Brian appears to be emerging from the heavens as he jams out to ‘Heartless’ by Kanye West. Soon flames appear behind him as he turns things up a notch and lifts the judges to their feet! It was another spectacular performance from the showman who is oozing with star power.”
