Daily Itinerary

Day 1 september 21 - depart the usa.

DEPART THE USA

Day 2 SEPTEMBER 22- ARRIVE IN ROME

Day 3 september 23 - naples (pompeii), day 4 september 24 - at sea, day 5 september 25 - athens & corinth.

Discover the rich architectural splendor of the ancient city of Athens as you explore the world-renowned Acropolis, the Propylaea, the Parthenon and the Erectheum. Stand on Mars Hill as the apostle Paul did when he proclaimed, "I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you". Also view the House of Parliament, the Presidential Palace, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This afternoon tours the city of Corinth, where the apostle Paul met fellow tentmakers Aquila and Priscilla and received a vision from the Lord saying, "I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city". As Paul spoke, Crispus (chief ruler of the synagogue) and many others believed and were baptized, establishing the church at Corinth to whom Paul later wrote his two epistles. Discover the Archaeological Museum, Market Place and Temples. As you walk among the ruins, stand on the Bema, where the apostle Paul stood before Gallio to face charges brought against him by the Jews. Overnight in Athens.

Day 6 SEPTEMBER 26 - EPHESUS

Ephesus is one of the Seven Churches of Revelation and was once a bustling port town with wide, colonnade-bordered streets and a population of 250,000. Spectacular excavations have revealed much of the glory of ancient Ephesus, including the huge Agora and Library, much has been lost. The ancient world once declared the Temple of Artemis to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World but today, only a single column remains to mark its site. View the terrace houses, also known as "the house of the rich," which give a true impression of ancient lifestyle. Explore the Museum of Ephesus for an up-close look at ancient artifacts. You will have time to explore on your own and recreate some of the footsteps of Paul.

Day 7 SEPTEMBER 27 - SANTORINI

Dock in Santorini today, one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands where picturesque, whitewashed villages topped with brilliant blue domes stand in stark contrast to the sheer drop cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea. The island itself perches on the edges of a volcano whose eruption 3,500 years ago is thought to have led to the collapse of the Minoan civilization. Explore the island on your own or join one of the optional excursions available for purchase onboard. Shore excursions today will be booked directly through the cruise line.

Day 8 SEPTEMBER 28 - MYKONOS

Nestled in the heart of Greece’s Cyclades archipelago, Mykonos pulses with irrepressible energy. With its powder white houses and sparkling blue waters. The Island of the Winds is as colorful as the people who call the island home. You can walk narrow marble pathways laced with purple bougainvillea blooms or go cycling on two wheels past off-the-path Ano Mera village. Explore Greece’s maritime history at Armenistis Lighthouse and check out the Folklore Museum’s Mykonian ship models. At the end of the day, watch the sun burn out beyond an Aegean horizon from an open-air seaside taverna. Shore excursions today will be booked directly through the cruise line.

Day 9 SEPTEMBER 29 - CHANIA, CRETE

Day 10 september 30 - at sea, day 11 october 1- return to the usa.

Huckaby: Me? Getting old? Seventy might just be the new 40.

I am old. I mean, officially. I’ll be 70 Thursday. As Casey Stengel once said, “A lot of people my age are dead and you can look it up.”

What? You thought Yogi Berra said that? No. It was Casey. Yogi didn’t say everything.

When I was a child, growing up in Porterdale, I never gave any thought to living seven decades. Nikita Khrushchev was on television every day promising to bury me and we were hiding under our school desks once a day. If you remember duck-and-cover drills, you are old, too. I hope such maneuvers are not in my grandchildren’s futures.

I doubted reaching 70 as recently as ten years ago when I held my “last birthday” party at Henderson’s Restaurant. The catfish and hushpuppies were plentiful and sweet tea was flowing like wine that night as 108 people crowded into the back room to celebrate. Medical experts in three states were reporting that my demise was imminent, but God had other plans and here we are.

More from Darrell Huckaby: What is worth more than fame or fortune? To Matt Luke, family

Truth be known, I have known that I was an old man for about 15 years. A red-headed waitress broke the news to me. This is what happened.

I had a book signing in Thomaston, proud home of Mike Cavan . On the way home I stopped by a restaurant I liked to frequent near High Shoals State Park. I was alone, which meant I could overindulge without being chastised by my lovely wife, Lisa.

It also meant that I could flirt with the cute waitress. I gave her my most charming smile as she approached my table.

She tossed the menu in front of me and said, “I will tell you right off, the senior citizen discount doesn’t apply to the all-you-can-eat special.”

I was devastated, and asked, “Out of curiosity, how old do you have to be to get the senior citizen discount?”

She said, “65.” I was 54 at the time.

I ordered the liver and onions.

After my meal, I returned to my car and, upon examining myself in the mirror, decided that it was the gray in my hair and beard that was making me look so ancient. I drove to the nearest Kroger store and picked up a bottle of Grecian Formula. As I checked out, the young lady at the register whispered, “If you come back tomorrow you get a 10% senior discount.”

That’s when I knew.

More from Darrell Huckaby: Remembering old Athens restaurants and sharing a dream of a new one

Shortly afterward, however, I was reminded that age is just a number.

I was having dinner and the phone rang, which is not unusual. But this time I answered it, which was rare. I am glad I did. On the other end was a lady calling to give me information about a recent column I had written, about a car accident that happened in 1941. During the conversation she informed that her husband had been driving and, at 28, was the only adult in the car.

That intrigued me and I said, “Ma’am, if you don’t mind my asking, if your husband was 28 in 1941, how old are you?”

She said, “101.” Then she offered, “I would have called you last night, but I had to go to work.” At one hundred and one.

It turned out she was a greeter at a local funeral home and I had known her, peripherally, for years.

I then asked, “How do you get to work?”

She said, “Same way as you get to work. I drive. But I have to drive with my left foot because I had polio in my right leg in 1919.” Our conversation continued and I was fascinated and asked if I might meet with her to garner more stories for my column.

She agreed, but added, “You will have to visit me at my place of work, of course. I don’t accept men callers at my home. The neighbors might talk.”

There is hope for me yet. Seventy might just be the new 40.

2021 needs to get lost, and 2022, here are some suggestions about how you can do better

I hope you will join me in staying up until midnight on New Year’s Eve, so we can make sure that 2021 departs. On time. And eat every single black-eyed pea on your plate next Saturday.

I’m not saying that it was a bad year, but if 2021 were a cereal, it would be Honey Bunches of Oats Protein Granola. The store brand.

If 2021 were a movie, it would be "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes."

If 2021 were a candy, it would be licorice.

You get the idea.

How did I hate you? Let me count the ways.

Let’s start with gasoline prices. It has been a long, long time since I have had to decide whether to make a trip to visit friends or relatives or to buy groceries based on how much it would cost to fill up my tank. In 2021 I did. And there was that one week back in the spring when I couldn’t find any gasoline at all, for almost a week.

Three words that I hope will go out of the vernacular in 2022. Supply chain issues. It’s not like walking into a facility in the old Soviet Union when I visit the store where shopping is a pleasure, but there are random items that I haven’t been able to find for a long time. Little Miss Sunbeam apparently doesn’t have time to bake the old-fashioned-style bread these days and why do you suppose we can’t find creamed cheese?

More: Settling into our new Oconee County home, and savoring present and past Christmases

You want to live life on the edge, just try running a tour company during a worldwide pandemic with different information being dispersed based on whether the disperser favors red power ties or blue. We had to cancel trips to Scotland, Ireland, England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Death Valley National Park and New York City this year due to COVID issues.

We did manage to take eight or 10 trips to 33 different US states, so we have a pulse — but I don’t think we can survive more than three or more variants.

And there was still way too much meanness and violence and death and destruction in the world. For 100 straight years now, Miss America candidates have been asking for world peace and we can’t even get through a weekend in certain cities without murder and mayhem and violence. And politicians are making a game out dividing the public over supporting the police or the perpetrators of crime. That’s just crazy stuff.

And there was that debacle in the Mercedes Benz Stadium the first weekend in December. No, 2021 needs to go and I have some pretty specific instructions for the year that follows.

First of all, I’m holding '22 responsible for the Orange Bowl results. We know '21 will just be phoning it in as midnight approaches, so everything that happens in Miami is on the new year, and my family and I have big plans for Indianapolis in a couple of weeks. Don’t get on my bad side by allowing fate and the Michigan offense to upend those plans, 2022.

We need a little break when it comes to purchase power. We want a kinder, gentler pricing structure with people willing to drive and load and unload trucks and to serve our food at restaurants and to do all those tasks that keep the economy humming.

Our health care workers have been heroic for the past two years. Heroic. Maybe 2022 can give those folks a break. Maybe the general populace will have their eyes opened to the benefits of taking the COVID vaccine and we can move around and gather and travel more safely. Fewer sick people. More fun.

2021 did show us that Georgia teams could overcome any hex or jinx that has been cast upon the state. The Braves have a World Series Championship to prove it. So, 2022. It is now the Georgia Bulldogs' turn. Pretty please? With sugar and molasses.

And if it is not too much trouble, maybe this will be the year that our politicians remember that they were elected to serve the people, not service them. Maybe this will be the year that statesmen — and stateswomen — emerge and reestablish unity and trust to government.

Hey, if millions of kids all over the world can write letters to Santa and leave teeth under their pillows at night for the Tooth Fairy, I can hope for competent political leaders and a return to civility and normalcy.

Happy New Year, y’all. Here’s to the thrill of hope.
