The ultimate Ancient Rome tour experience

We booked this activity for two adults and a 9-year-old who is fanatical about Ancient Rome - this tour was excellent for both adults and children alike. You wear the headset and can view the exterior of the Colosseum as it would have been. Very fascinating and gets the children's imagination going! The staff is also very friendly and helpful - I wouldn't hesitate to book with them again. Thank you!

The best virtual reality of the Colosseum you'll find!

This was amazing! Perfect for anyone who doesn't like the usual tour guide activity. This small-group tour was amazing! Although we couldn't enter the Colosseum, we were able to see how it looked back in the day from the outside. I felt a bit silly surrounded by people with the headset on, but soon I got over it, and it was such a unique experience!

So all the site people were er wet and couldn't be there on time (I kid you not). Sent to the wrong que by him, not informed about where to go/do and on site Colosseum staff rescued us. Massively over-priced and disorganised- they only want your money. A couple of days before my trip they text me to say they couldnt get the underground ticket I requested and needed to switch to a basic ticket. I reluctantly agreed. At the same time they also changed my ticket time from 9am to 9.20am. They told me to be at the meeting area 30 minutes before ticket time so we were there just after 8.30 and stayed until 9am. No sign of them. After 9am we gave up and realised we could book with the genuine Colosseum website using the QR codes on display outside the venue. Got a ticket straight away. Complained to company afterwards who dismissed my claim on the grounds that their reps had been there at the time (they weren't). I should have booked with the genuine Colosseum website in the first place. Be warned! Read more Written March 3, 2024

It was disorganised, the meeting point was not clear and the ticket people were late. The underground section of the tour was interesting but the lady that accompanied us didn’t make it clear about what we had to do. She apparently couldn’t give any information, she was just there for… well, I don’t really know. For example, she told us to follow behind 2 other tours but the tour guides with those tours told us not to. It made the whole experience stressful and quite honestly weird. There was another couple with us who were equally frustrated and a poor single chap from America who we never saw again, don’t know where he ended up. This tour cost a fair amount of money and it was wasted in our view. The best part was when she told us we were ‘free’ and we could look around the main part on our own. Not recommended. The Roman Colosseum

This piece is an extensive Virtual Tour of the Roman Colosseum with views from one of the main entrances, of gladiators fighting, ships portraying naval combat, views from the upper gallery and from the rooftop.

The Colosseum could hold over 50,000 people.  It was segregated by class with the patrician class seated in the lower tier, while the common people sat in the upper tiers.  On the roof of the Colosseum, Roman sailors were employed to extend tarps to protect crowds from the sun and rain.

Gladiators fought either animals or each other in elaborate games, with some game events lasting weeks and thousands of participants.  Some gladiators became famous and were followed much like sports teams today.

Roman scribes claim that at some of the Colosseum games, the arena was filled with water to stage naval battles.  The building and it's basements have been altered extensively since, so it is unknown how water was pumped into the main arena.  In later years, a network of passages ran under the arena to channel wild animals from cages with ramps and elevators lifting them to the arena floor.

It is estimated that over a half million people and over a million animals died in the games over the course of 450 years.  Over the years, the Colosseum has decayed from earthquakes, erosion and citizens taking stones for new buildings.

The Colosseum in Rome

History and facts of the roman colosseum:.

3d tour of colosseum

The Flavius amphitheatre is the biggest and most imposing in the Roman world , but is also the most famous monument in Rome and is known as the " Colosseum " or " Coliseum ". Started by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavia family, it was opened by his son Titus in 80 A.D.

The highly ostentatious opening ceremony, lasted one hundred days during which people saw great fights , shows and hunts involving the killing of thousands of animals (5000 according to the historian Suetonius). For the opening, the arena space was filled with water for one of the most fantastic events held in Roman times , naumachias – real sea battles reproducing great battles of the past.

But why does the whole world call it the Colosseum ?

Viator Banner Rome

This name appeared for the first time in a famous prophecy of the medieval monk Venerable Beda: “ Rome will exist as long as the Colosseum does; when the Colosseum falls so will Rome; when Rome falls so will the world”. Perhaps he got the name from the enormous statue of the Emperor Nero , “ the Colossus ” 35 meters high, which stood right next to the amphitheatre and has now been completely destroyed.

Colosseum

The Roman Colosseum is one of the most imposing ancient structures. Imagine it all white, completely covered in splendid travertine stone slabs . It is elliptic in shape in order to hold more spectators. It had four floors; the first three had eighty arches each; the arches on the second and third floors were decorated with huge statues .

It's incredible to think that this imposing building took less than ten years to build . How did they do it?

The Romans were really good at an architectural technique that they knew well: the arch . An arch allows you to distribute the weight of heavy constructions effectively, in a perfect manner. The Romans used arches as the main element of their architecture , think of Roman aqueducts , for example.

The Coliseum can be viewed as though it were a series of aqueducts built one on top of the other.

What we see nowadays is just the skeleton of what was the greatest arena in the ancient world . Three-fifths of the outer surrounding brick wall are missing. In the Middle Ages , when no longer in use, the roman Colosseum was transformed into an enormous marble, lead and iron quarry used by Popes to build Barberini Palace, Piazza Venezia and even St. Peter's .

Holes in the columns

The holes still seen in many columns are just the holes made to extract the lead and iron used by the Romans for the nails inside the marble blocks.

The amphitheatre could hold up to seventy thousand spectators . The tiers of seats were inclined in such a way as to enable people to get a perfect view from wherever they sat.

Entry was free for all Roman citizens , but places were divided according to social status , similar to seating divisions in today’s theatres; the seats at the top were for the common people, but with distinct sections for men and women, the nearer you got to the arena the higher your social status; in the front row were senators, vestals, priests and - naturally - the emperor .

Like modern sports stadiums, the Roman Colosseum gave spectators efficient protection from the sun thanks to its ingenious roof covering, the “ Velarium ”. The Velarium was an enormous linen tarpaulin hung by a system of ropes, winches and wooden poles that girded the top of the outer wall. It took one hundred sailors from the Imperial fleet to move it. They moved in perfect synchrony to the beating of a drum.

The roman Colosseum and the Gladiators

Colosseum arena

On entering, we see the arena straight ahead of us. The stage for shows, whose floor was once made from a mixture of brick and wood, has now disappeared altogether. In its place you can see the cellars which housed equipment used to prepare and carry out the games.

The two underground floors housed the lifts and hoists with their counter weights, of which we can still see the rails today ; they were the special effects of the time, used to hoist up animals and gladiators who burst into the arena through trapdoors, suddenly appearing in a burst of white dust giving the audience great surprise effects .

A complex system of hinges and lifts also allowed them to hoist up set-designed backdrops, used for the hunting events.

The shows taking place in the Colosseum were both of a symbolic and solid nature and created a link between citizens and their leader through common participation at important public events with the not unimportant function of giving the people some fun to distract them from political problems.

So, what exactly happened inside the Colosseum in Rome ?

Lots of different shows were put on in the amphitheatre, at different times, following a specific time schedule: in the morning the " Venationes " - fights between exotic animals , or between men and animals.

At times, as a form of public execution , people were left to the mercy of ferocious beasts. The "Silvae" must have been quite spectacular; special scenery was reconstructed in the arena by painters and set-designers, with trees and bushes, so that it looked like a forest full of animals, which in this case did not necessarily have to be killed .

But also less cruel and definitely more unique events took place like the famous exhibition of an elephant who knew how to write words in the sand with its trunk. It is not true that the Colosseum was used to kill Christians as a kind of spectacle.

Bas relief of gladiators fighting

The event the audience enjoyed most was definitely the gladiators . Towards midday there was a break during which they removed the bodies and spread more sand on the arena floor.

A deafening noise arose from the audience; to the blaring of trumpets and the beating of drums, the gladiators triumphantly paraded into the packed arena .

They came from an underground passageway linked directly to the Gladiators’ barracks , the Ludus Magnus and were welcomed by fans like real heroes, a bit like today’s sports champions. After a brief walk around the arena , the gladiators paid homage to the Emperor’s stage saluting with the famous words "Ave Cesare morituri te salutant" (Hail Caesar, those who are about to die salute you ).

But who were the gladiators?

The term gladiator comes from Gladius , the short sword used by legionaries . Rarely were they people who had to fight against their will. Normally, gladiators were prisoners of war who were given the choice to be slaves or to fight in the arena for a limited period of time at the end of which they would be free, often after having put aside a discrete sum of money.

Others were simply paupers in search of fame and riches. Along with a good pay, the profession gave them great popularity, especially with the women, who even paid out large sums of money just to spend a night of passion with one of them.

There were twelve types of gladiators; there was the “ Retiarius ” armed with a net, a trident and a knife; or those who fought with a shield and a sickle, others wore a crested helmet, strong armour and carried a javelin. The duellers were chosen from different categories for dramatic effect.

Pollice Verso (Thumbs Down) by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1872

If the defeated gladiator was wounded, he could ask for pardon by raising an arm; then the audience would shout to the emperor present on his stage to save him or put him to death; the emperor decided the poor man’s fate: thumbs up saved him, thumbs down put the gladiator to death.

The winners received golden palm leaves and large amounts of money . After each battle, servants dressed like Charon , the Ferryman of the Underworld, made sure that the wounded were really dead and where necessary finished them off. The gladiator’s blood was much in demand; people thought it had healing powers and could heal you from epilepsy and give you greater sexual vigour .

Roman spectators loved cruel shows, those that we consider violent to say the least. Their passion for these events can be compared to what some people nowadays feel for the so-called “splatter” cinema. With one basic difference: the crudeness of reality. Just think that during mass battles and in the hunts, the smell of blood and burnt flesh and that of wild animals became unbearable and the effort to mask it with incense and perfumes had no effect whatsoever.

Interior of the Colosseum, Rome (1832) by Thomas Cole

After the VI century, with the Empire's decline , the Colosseum fell into disuse and its walls housed confraternities, hospitals, hermits and even a cemetery. From the Middle Ages onwards, the Colosseum has been one of Rome 's and the world's greatest marvels , attracting hoards of visitors.

Threatened with demolition by Sixtus V for town-planning reasons, it was declared a sacred monument dedicated to the Passion of Christ by Benedict XIV, placing a cross on a pedestal, as a symbol of the sufferings of all Christian martyrs. This cross is still the starting point for the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.

Since then, it has become an object of worship for Christians and was protected from further destruction and ruin; in fact, Popes after that restored and consolidated it.

For a tourist today, seeing the Colosseum means, as Charles Dickens wrote, "seeing the ghost of old Rome floating over the places its people walk in".

Quinn – 13 November 2021

Amazing experience. Loved it

Patricia Goss – 5 December 2021

Nice and helpful staff, next time I will book a tour to visit the Colosseum!

Gaia Trevisano – 12 December 2021

Un’esperienza che insegna e diverte. Stupendo, poi il fatto che si svolga esattamente di fronte al Colosseo rende tutto ancora più suggestivo.

Joan Ward – 15 September 2022

The tour shows three major areas of the colosseum at the peak of its glory: the outside, the inside and the underground. This is a MUST if you’re in Rome.

A Virtual Tour of Ancient Rome, Circa 320 CE: Explore Stunning Recreations of The Forum, Colosseum and Other Monuments

in Architecture , History , Technology | August 5th, 2020 4 Comments

If you’re a regular reader of this site, you’re likely familiar with the simulation hypothesis , the idea that conscious experience is nothing more than a computer program. This concept has many sci-fi implications, from Matrix -like scenarios to the radical idea that everything in the universe is software, run by incomprehensible beings who might as well be gods. One of the more plausible versions suggests that we are living in an “ancestor simulation,” designed by future human societies to recreate their past.

Presumably, simulated ancestors would create their own ancestor simulations and so on, ad infinitum . There’s no way to know where on the continuum we fall, but wherever it is, ancestor simulations are on the way… maybe. They’re rudimentary at the moment, consisting of immersive video games and VR recreations of ancient cities.

Each iteration, however, is better than the last, as we have seen in the case of Rome Reborn (or Rome Reborn®), a 3D digital modeling project designed to recreate the city’s architecture as it was in 320 CE, through expert renderings informed by architectural historians and “virtual archaeologists” like Dr. Bernard Frischer , professor emeritus at the University of Virginia .

Back in a 2012 Open Culture post , Matthias Rascher explained the significance of this year, “when Rome’s population had reached its peak (about one million) and the first Christian churches were being built.” Historians will also recognize 320 as following directly on the heels of the Donation of Constantine that gave the city to the Pope. We can tour the virtual streets of this rapidly changing ancient city, though the burgeoning population is nowhere in evidence. Nothing moves, grows, or changes in Rome Reborn. In that sense it is still like so many previous representations of antiquity.

Now in version 3.0, Rome Reborn began as a 3D model in 2007, and was first owned by the Regents of the University of California. It now operates, under the auspices of the University of Virginia, as a private company called Flyover Zone. They have other such digital recreations in their product line, including “Athens Reborn ® , Hadrian’s Villa Reborn ® , Baalbek Reborn ® , Egypt Reborn ® , and Historical Games ® .” Rome Reborn’s designer, Danila Loginov, has released increasingly detailed promos of the project over the years, and you can see these many videos here.

To fully experience this simulated Rome, you’ll need a Virtual Reality headset. The third version of the 3D model has been made publicly available. “You can immerse yourself in the ancient city and even enter into some of its most famous buildings while listening to the commentary of highly qualified experts,” the Rome Reborn site promises . Famous buildings one might explore include the Roman forum and the Basilica of Maxentius. It is not an experience based in realism. In some of the simulations “you can opt for a whirlwind   flyover tour  of the city,” notes Meilan Solly at Smithsonian .

This roughly two-hour tour is like nothing any ancient Roman ever experienced. “Comparatively, the two site visits place users in the driver’s seat,” Solly writes, “affording them freedom to roam through reconstructed streets and halls.” It’s not quite the stuff of a simulated universe just yet, but it may not be too far in the future before Rome Reborn® fully lives up to its name. Learn more about ancient Rome, circa 320 CE, in the videos here, and learn more about Rome Reborn at their official site .

While it looks great, I don’t believe it’s accurate. Rome was built on hills, not flat land.

Ratings & Reviews

Your experience.

Visiting the grand Roman Colosseum is a must on every traveler's bucket list But what if you could take things up a notch?

This tour of the Colosseum is a truly unique experience. The virtual reality experience immerses you in ancient Rome through an animated and interactive 3D reproduction of the Colosseum. Using a multisensory experience and Oculus VR glasses, you will be transported to ancient Rome while listening to a multilingual audio guide that will provide you with authentic historical knowledge about these places.

Admire the bronze figure of Nero that is covered in gold and numerous other nearby monuments as you virtually stroll across the packed historic square. Next, at the arena's stage, hear the roar of lions and the clash of swords as the gladiators battle. Finally, roam the eerie underground passageways where slaves were housed in order to prepare for the performances.

Once your VR tour is over, you can independently roam the halls and passages of the Colosseum. Also access Palatine Hill, one of the most ancient parts of the city, and the Roman Forum, located at the center of Rome which has religious, political and social significance.

The 7 best rome colosseum tours with skip-the-line access.

Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Courtesy of ArcheoRunning

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.

A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Crown Tours: Skip the line Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour

Panoramic aerial view of the ruins of ancient Rome at the Roman Forum from Palatine Hill.

Price: From $57 for adults

Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.

Selected by GetYourGuide as a Certified Experience, this group tour starts at the Colosseum, then takes you to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.

Local tip: This tour is offered over a variety of time slots every day. Pick one of the earlier time slots to make sure you'll finish up by lunchtime.

Through Eternity Tours: Ultimate Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

House of the Vestal Virgins at the Roman Forum.

Price: From $85 for adults

Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Palatine Hill, which some tours skip.

Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable guides for their passion about ancient history and keeping the tour moving while explaining everything in detail. This tour starts at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week and finishes up around lunchtime. In addition to the Colosseum, highlights include the Via Sacra and the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum, as well as the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.

Groups are limited to 16 people; if there are six or more people taking the tour, the guide gives out headsets so everyone can hear. Participants are asked to meet 10 minutes before the start time in front of Cafe/Restaurant Angelino ai Fori on Largo Corrado Ricci. The tour is stroller-accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, especially on hot days.

Through Eternity Tours offers a variety of group and private tours of Rome and other destinations, including Florence , Naples and Pompeii.

Local tip: Book a table at the nearby Taverna dei Fori Imperiali to enjoy a leisurely lunch after the tour.

The Moon Over the Colosseum Tour

Night scene aerial of the Rome Colosseum from the Vittorio Emanuele II viewpoint.

Price: From $27

Duration: 1 hour

Standout perk: You get after-hours access to the Colosseum and hypogeum.

This seasonal tour offers a completely different perspective on the Colosseum, when it's illuminated and the last of the visitors have left for the day. The official night tour offered by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo focuses on the underground level, where the guide shows participants where the animals were caged and how they were lifted up onto the stage on proto-elevators made of wooden platforms. The tour group then ascends the stairs and sees a multimedia installation depicting Jerusalem before passing through the service gallery and ending on the arena level. The tour offers a rare opportunity to see the Colosseum without the crowds, but the tradeoff is that photos may not come out as well at night.

Participants on the tour arrive at the Valadier Gate, meet the guide and go through security. This tour does not include the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill. The tour hours change by season, and dates for the spring 2024 season have not been released yet as of the time of publication.

Local tip: There are a bunch of companies offering this tour for triple the price of the official tour, but the official tour is great.

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Price: From $151 for adults

Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.

Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants note that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.

ArcheoRunning: The Unveiled Colosseum Running Tour (or Walking Tour)

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Price: $218 for private groups of up to 6 people + the cost of tickets

Standout perk: You get access to the third level and attic.

This private tour is led by Isabella Calidonna, a licensed tour guide and certified personal trainer. Through her company ArcheoRunning, she leads visitors on running and walking tours of Rome early in the morning to see the city without the crowds. For this tour, Calidonna meets guests at their hotel at 7:30 a.m. and leads them on a running tour through the Eternal City's most beautiful squares before bringing them to the Colosseum, where they have the chance to visit the third level and the attic – areas normally closed to the public – as well as the lower levels of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. This tour must be booked at least a month in advance in order to confirm 8:30 a.m. access to the Colosseum.

AR Experience, an offshoot of ArcheoRunning, also offers tours of the underground at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., as well as more relaxed three-hour tours that are also suitable for children and people with mobility problems.

Local tip: You can't run inside the Colosseum, but running around it is a great way to take it in while getting some exercise.

Roma Experience: Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

View of the Colosseum exterior on a Roma Experience Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.

Courtesy of Roma Experience

Price: From $520 for two people

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Standout perk: See these ancient sites with an archaeologist who dug at the Roman Forum.

For a deeper understanding (no pun intended) of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can buy. She studied archaeology and has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other sites, so she's just the person to guide you if you want to get beyond the surface level. Her private tours range from just under three hours for a skip-the-line Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour to the full-day "See Rome in One Day" tour, which also includes a guided visit of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Local tip: If you want to see another incredible archaeological park, let Bove take you to Ostia Antica, less than an hour from Rome.

8 Best Colosseum Tours to Book in 2023 + Planning Tips

Symbol of Romans’ engineering genius, here you will find the best Colosseum tours to discover and delve into one of Rome’s most famous landmarks. Also known as Amphitheatre Flavium, it was built around 70AD. Since then, it has been the place for shows and games as well as a period of decline after the fall of the Roman Empire. After centuries, this huge amphitheater has shown no sign of cooling and keeps the record of being one of the most popular Rome attractions and one of the best Roman archaeological sites .

There are many ways you can visit the Colosseum , and while going independently might sound cheaper, it can also be quite time-consuming and not as valuable as booking a Colosseum private tour. Why? Because with a tour you can skip the line and save plenty of time, especially in crowded seasons, and because a tour leader can talk to you about historical Colosseum facts and anecdotes that otherwise you might not discover on your own.

Whether you are booking a guided tour of the Amphitheater Flavium or not, you might want to book your room in Rome’s city center or even one of the best hotels near the Colosseum .

rome colosseum entrance

Find here the best tours of the Colosseum in Rome. Choose the experience that better fits your needs and travel preferences. All these tours include Colosseum tickets skip-the-line to make sure you don’t queue for an hour or two and don’t take too much time off the other landmarks.

Even though one of Rome’s main tourist attractions, there are many things to know and learn about this ancient amphitheater. This is why a Colosseum and Roman Forum tour is essential if you are interested in going beyond just looking at the architecture.

Whether you book a private Colosseum underground tour or an exclusive Colosseum night tour, you will learn and see much more than with a simple ticket entrance to the general access area. We selected the best Colosseum tours for every preference. Whether you only want to visit the general access areas while learning about the whole structure, or also walk the arena floor and gladiators’ dungeon.

Table of Contents

Which tour of Colosseum is best?

I suggest the first in our list that is run by Take Walks, a complete tour of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. It includes skip-the-line tickets which help avoid waiting up to an hour during hot summer days in the line.

This comes really handy especially if you are traveling to Rome with kids or elderly friends and family. If one of the things to do in London with kids in fact is to discover Harry Potter’s places, in Rome, this goes for gladiators and ancient Roman shows and fights.

There are countless companies providing fantastic tours of the Colosseum in Rome. For a more complete experience, you can book a tour that includes also the Arena Floor and/or the Underground because you are going to have the full picture of what was really going on during the famous shows in Ancient Rome, how the Colosseum was built and organized, and what happened backstage.

We have listed some of the best Colosseum tours for you to help you decide which one is best for you.

Is it worth getting a guided tour of the Colosseum?

Getting a guided tour of the Roman Colosseum is totally worth it if you want to learn more than what you would grasp by looking at the ruins by yourself. A tour will be led by an expert guide, often a historian or an archaeologist, who will give you insights you are likely to miss on your own.

I have visited the Colosseum many times, sometimes on my own and sometimes with a guided tour. The historians leading the tours I took incredibly increase the value and my knowledge about the place, its complex architecture, its original appearance, what everybody would do inside the Colosseum, whether they were the fighters, the staff coordinating the different parts, and the public.

Is the Colosseum Underground tour worth it?

Booking a tour where also the Colosseum Underground is included is always a great option. The undergrounds and the dungeon had their specific purpose and required great engineering skills to be built. So it’s important to get to know also this area to make your experience more complete.

Not all the tours include also the Colosseum Underground, just like they don’t all include the Arena Floor. These are the areas that are not open to the general public who only booked a standard ticket and they require a guide to access. Usually, the undergrounds and the arena floor are on the same tours and these are the experiences I recommend.

How much is a tour of the Colosseum floor?

There are different tours of the Colosseum and prices range between 40€ and 120€. This depends on whether you book a self-guided tour with only access to the floors open to the general public or a guided tour with access also to the arena floor and the underground.

Can you do a self-guided tour of the Colosseum?

You can always book skip-the-line tickets and explore the Colosseum at your own pace. These will give you access to the floors open to all visitors. If you want to access also the arena floor and the dungeon, you will need to book a private tour with a certified guide.

Colosseum Dungeon and Arena Floor Tour with Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

This is a Colosseum tour I took with The Roman Guy. It started at the Roman Forum, the very heart of the ancient city, where temples, villas and the Senate house were built. Here daily life went on thousands of years ago. One of my favorite areas within the Roman Forum is the altar devoted to Julius Caesar. After his death, he was deified and still now his fellow citizens bring him fresh flowers.

After exploring the Forum ruins, our tour guide took us to the Colosseum. Here we enjoyed skip-the-line access to reach the restricted areas available only by booking an authorized tour company. These are the reconstructed arena floor and the dungeons. Including what’s known as the “Gate of Death”, where the dead gladiators and animals were removed from the Colosseum.

  • Sights included: Colosseum, Colosseum Dungeon, Arena Floor.
  • Price: adults €138,70, children 7 to 17yo €93,19, children under 6 €38,80.

Colosseum Tour + Gladiator’s Entrance

This tour will make live the gladiators’ experience from the beginning. First of all, you will access the Arena from the Gladiators’ Gate to have a feel of what the famous fighters as well as the people sentenced to death by wild animals would have felt before meeting their fate.

Your visit will cover all areas and floor of the Colosseum making you relive all the thrill and the ferment of its heyday under all perspectives, whether it’s the gladiators or the public. An expert guide will talk you through all the history, the technical details of the Colosseum’s architecture, and the activities the audience engaged on.

Once you are done exploring the Colosseum, you will make your way to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill where your guide will explain the importance of these archaeological sites in Ancient Rome. Your guide will also show you 3D images to show you how these areas looked like at their highest moment.

  • How many people: 20 max
  • Sights included: Colosseum, Gladiators’ Gate, Colosseum Dungeon, Arena Floor.
  • Price: adults €50, children 6 to 17yo €44, free for children under 6.

Colosseum Skip-the-Line Self-Guided Virtual Reality Tour

If you’d rather book only a skip-the-line Colosseum ticket and explore the site with your own 3D virtual device, you can check out this tour.

For around 30€, you will rent an audio guide with headphones for which you can choose your language. This is a device for 3D interactive reconstruction of the Colosseum to “relive” the shows taking place 2000 years ago.

If you don’t want a guide and want to experience the Colosseum at your own pace, this is a good option. You will also have fast-track access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

  • How long: 2 hours
  • Sights included: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill.
  • Price: from €59.90 per person.

How long should you spend at the Colosseum?

I recommend staying at least 2 to 3 hours inside the Colosseum to visit and explore all its areas and sections, so the bleachers where the spectators watched the shows and fights, the undergrounds and the area floor.

Tips to enjoy your Colosseum tour

  • Book online. Whether you are doing a private guided tour or an official certified tour, booking online is always recommended even if you are only buying a skip-the-line ticket.
  • Bring your ID. Don’t forget your national ID or passport as they will be checked at the entrance.
  • Get there early. Even if you have a specific time for the start of your tour, I suggest getting there at least 10 to 15 minutes earlier to meet your tour guide and to
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Inside the Colosseum, you will walk a lot and you will occasionally do some stairs so definitely you don’t want to wear high heels or even flip flops. Wear a pair of runners, sneakers, or walking sandals.
  • Don’t wear a backpack. Backpacks and wheeled suitcases are not allowed in the Colosseum and there is no cloakroom so don’t carry yours otherwise it will be confiscated or you won’t be allowed in. You can bring a purse or a crossbody bag.
  • Bring a bottle of water. Don’t forget to carry a reusable water bottle to remain hydrated. Inside the Colosseum, there are also small fountains where you can refill it.
  • Wear sunscreen or a hat. Visiting the Colosseum takes place almost completely open-air so in summer make sure you don’t forget to wear sunscreen or a hat.
