What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. 22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Vicksburg is a place of drama. During the Civil War, the struggle to control Vicksburg proved to be a major turning point. The well-fortified connection between river and rail transportation was known as “The Gibraltar of the West.” A narrated exploration of the well-preserved National Military Park battlefield enlivens this powerful story and highlights its significance. President Abraham Lincoln summarized Vicksburg’s importance clearly when he said, “Vicksburg is the key. 4 Baton Rouge, LA Meaning “red stick,” Baton Rouge’s 1699 French name references an ancient geographical marker and reflects the city’s long history. As Louisiana’s state capital, the city still echoes with tales of the characters who lived here, most notably Governor and Senator Huey P. Long. Learn about his dramatic career at the magnificent 1852 Old State Capitol Museum and visit Long’s 1932 State Capitol building, an architectural marvel of granite and marble.

5 St. Francisville, LA As the bow-ramp from the ship opens and stretches to the shore, you will be welcomed into the historic cotton port of St. Francisville. Overlooking the river from atop a high, St. Francisville began as a part of Spanish West Florida in the early 1800s until American settlers overthrew the Spanish governing forces, and the region later became part of the United States. Experience this town’s rich history on your own or with a variety of guided excursions. As you explore, discover the Historic District which boasts magnificent mansions and unique boutique shops and admire cottonwood trees which transition to stately oaks adorned with Spanish moss.

6 Natchez, MS In Natchez, grand homes sparkle like jewels, adorning the bluffs that tower above the river. Since 1716, when the French first built a fort here among the Natchez Indians, the town has grown to boast elaborate mansions built by planters in the 1800s to flaunt their wealth. With no Civil War fighting here, Natchez still features hundreds of antebellum homes and buildings. Each of these architectural treasures has its own story to tell, creating a charming downtown that embodies the essence of southern charm and hospitality.

7 Vicksburg, MS Vicksburg is a place of drama. During the Civil War, the struggle to control Vicksburg proved to be a major turning point. The well-fortified connection between river and rail transportation was known as “The Gibraltar of the West.” A narrated exploration of the well-preserved National Military Park battlefield enlivens this powerful story and highlights its significance. President Abraham Lincoln summarized Vicksburg’s importance clearly when he said, “Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket… They can defy us from Vicksburg… As valuable as New Orleans will be to us, Vicksburg will be more so.”

Day 1: Arrive Memphis Welcome to Memphis! Meet the group and head to The Peabody Hotel, known for its charm, elegance, and rich history. This icon opened in 1869 and is world-famous for its five resident ducks, who march daily from their rooftop perch, down through the lobby, and into the fountain for a swim – all under the careful watch of the Duckmaster! This evening enjoy dinner and live music at BB King’s Blues Club on the famous Beale Street! (D) Day 2: Elvis Museum & Graceland Tour / Embarkation American Queen Steamboat It’s time to get “All Shook Up” with a visit to Elvis’ one-and-only Graceland Mansion. Tour the inside of his famous home, still complete with green shag carpeting “down in the jungle room,” and also visit the “Elvis Presley’s Memphis” complex. Over 200,000-square-feet in size, it enables you to follow the life path that Elvis took, surround yourself with the things that he loved, and experience the sights and sounds of the city that inspired him. The “Elvis The Entertainer Career Museum” displays his gold and platinum records, his stunning jumpsuits, memorabilia from his movies, and so much more! “Presley Motors Automobile Museum” allows you to walk among some of Elvis’ favorite automobiles, including his iconic Pink Cadillac, Stutz Blackhawk, Ferrari, Limo, Rolls Royce, and more. Catch a unique glimpse into the Port of the Mississippi Delta, and discover a muse of many. Enjoy stunning live performances each night in the two-story Grand Saloon, where you might be taken back to the roaring 20’s with a big band set, or maybe a more theatrical show, featuring Broadway’s biggest hits. And be sure to bring your dancin’ shoes to the Engine Room Bar to enjoy a live set by their talented musicians. (B, L, D) Day 4: Vicksburg, Mississippi Vicksburg perfectly blends Southern culture and heritage with exciting modern attractions. As a major battle site during the Civil War, this Southern town carries a history unlike any other. Learn about the historic conflicts of the city, taste its cuisine, visit the many museums and pick out the perfect souvenir. (B, L, D) Day 5: Natchez, Mississippi It seems as if history fell asleep and awoke unscathed by the changing of times in this charming river town, founded in 1716, making it the oldest city on the Mississippi River. It’s known for its elegance, hospitality and impressive preservation of history – found on every street corner. Enjoy the unique shops, restaurants, museums and historic homes, all of which inspired Hugh Bayless to include Natchez in his book “The 100 Best Towns in America.” (B, L, D) Day 6: St. Francisville, Louisiana St. Francisville today is a testament to the lifestyle of a bygone era, with its plethora of charming antebellum-period homes and striking architecture. With over 140 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, beautiful plantation homes nestled in the rolling countryside and bustling Main Street shops, this quaint town situated on the bluffs of the Mississippi River has a style all its own. (B, L, D) Day 7: Baton Rouge, Louisiana Baton Rouge grants a strikingly different experience from the small-town stops throughout the journey. In this energetic port, history-facing museums and landmarks fraternize with forward-looking art and industry to offer a personalized encounter for each visitor. Choose to hop on one of their deluxe motorcoaches and explore the diversity this city has to offer, or take a walk down the river path alongside the boat. (B, L, D) Day 8: Nottoway American Queen Steamboat Company features an exclusive port at Nottoway. My first “Mississippi river cruise” was a silly 20-minute boat ride aboard Liberty Belle at Disney World. I was finally going to experience the real deal. 

Based on my Huck Finn Disney ride, I really didn’t know what to expect on a real Mississippi river cruise. When I stepped onboard American Cruise Line’s American Heritage (formerly Queen of the Mississippi) , the only similarity was the traditional big red paddle wheel.

Our week on the Mississippi would cruise through U.S. territory I’ve never explored. The cities and towns were totally new to me.

This post takes you along on my Mississippi River journey from New Orleans to Memphis. I hope to inspire you to get onboard and experience the controversial history, regional culture and delicious cuisine in this part of America.

Mississippi River Cruise from New Orleans to Memphis

It would be a week of grisly Civil War battlefield sights and stories, tours of opulent plantations with their costumed glamour and turbulent past. There were strolls through some of America’s cities that grew up along the river. 

In addition, we’d have a chance to indulge in regional southern food that included its French and subsequent Creole and Cajun influence.

Step Aboard American Heritage

Before beginning its 2022 season , American Heritage had a bow to stern remodel and refurbishment. The rivership now looks modern yet still cozy. Muted tones of beige and aqua, plus accents in navy and deep red are found throughout the new fabrics and décor.

All 150 passengers were mostly seniors and mostly Americans, with a few Brits and Australians. Everyone joined in the 1800’s spirit. 

A few men and women were wearing straw or ribboned hats and other small bits of wearable nostalgia. At embarkation, crew members were dressed as though they were sent from Central Casting. It’s a Mississippi river cruise thing.

Mississippi River Cruise Itinerary

The river cruise price tag included a one-night pre-cruise stay at The Whitney Hotel in New Orleans. This was very convenient for the cruise line to pick up almost all of their guests from one location in town to go to the port. 

It also assured that everyone would be on board and checked in well before sailaway time.

En Route to Oak Alley, Louisiana

American Heritage left New Orleans well before dinner chimes were heard. We were heading upstream for an evening port visit. Oak Alley, Louisiana.

Only a few hours into our Mississippi river cruise was our first port town; Vacherie, Louisiana for a stop at Oak Alley Plantation. Aglow at sunset, the plantation was quite a spectacular sight.

Maybe it was the 300-year old canopy of live oaks or the warm glow from the porch lights.

An evening stroll along the 1/4 mile path from the ship’s gangway to the double-door plantation house entrance was a good way to walk off dinner. Set Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine to the year 1837. 

Once a wealthy sugar plantation, Oak Alley was built on the backbone of slavery. Between 110 and 120 men, women and children lived in bondage at the plantation. Almost all Mississippi river cruises stop at Oak Alley. 

Next morning, any apparitions disappeared with the light of day, or so I hoped. Tour guides in period costume guided us through many of the rooms, chatting up the history and events from the plantation’s nearly 200-year old existence.

After the tour, and roasting in the heat and humidity, everyone slowly sauntered back towards the Mississippi river. Our awaiting air-conditioned ship was a welcome sight. 

As we neared Baton Rouge in the early evening, it was a strange juxtaposition of a contemporary skyline with an Antebellum mood. A light drizzle curtailed our plans to walk the river’s wide promenade. 

I liked the idea of a walk in the evening mist along the river bank but no one else seemed interested to go. 

It was also just a little too far to walk for a peek at the USS Kidd Naval Destroyer permanently docked on the Mississippi. Instead, many guests stayed onboard and relaxed on rocking chairs beneath the awning on the Sun Deck.

The second full day of our river cruise began with motor coach tour of Baton Rouge. Tour guides in these old buildings seem to love a good ghost story. First stop was a tour of the castle-like Old State Capitol Building.

An Antebellum-costumed woman eagerly recanted the “Ghost of Sarah Morgan” story with tales of the Capitol’s Civil War history and ghostly past. Then onto the new and hopefully not haunted State Capitol Building (also known as Huey P. Long’s monument).

A beautifully preserved French Creole plantation house, Magnolia Mound dates from 1791. Several buildings, including an outdoor open-hearth kitchen, slave quarters, the Overseer’s house and an unusual three-seater outhouse comprise the 900-acre grounds.

Natchez, Mississippi, our third stop, began with a city motor coach tour that wound through the tree-lined thoroughfares and riverfront drives.

First stop was Longwood, a sprawling and elegant six-story mansion. The building of this unique octagonal-shaped building began in 1859. 

The completion of Longwood would never happen. With the start of the Civil War in 1861, all the construction workers had to abandon the job and march off to war. 

Back to American Heritage  for lunch as was routine. Shuttle buses ran continuously to and from the sleepy downtown Natchez.

The next morning, the Mississippi river took us to Vicksburg, Mississippi. A major location for civil war battles, archeologists are still finding artifacts buried in the muddy waters. 

A visit to the Vicksburg National Military Park was a sobering reminder of the Battle of Vicksburg and the 47-day siege in 1863.

Civil War battlefields, monuments and memorials dominated the day’s theme in Vicksburg. Once we reached the National Military Park entrance, a park guide narrated the scenes and explained what happened where and why.

We stopped to view the U.S.S.Cairo , an iron clad gunboat sunk in battle in 1862. The antique gunboat was discovered in the nearby Yazoo river in 1956, buried in silt and mud. 

The gunboat was salvaged 8 years later, along with hundreds of incredibly well-preserved artifacts. Who knew?

Like many of the small town treasures along the Mississippi river, Vicksburg is high on my list of places on this river cruise that I’d love to see again. The town’s Civil War history was almost totally unknown to me. 

In fact, almost all Civil War history that took place along the Mississippi was news to me. 

Vicksburg’s Riverfront Murals depict the history of Vicksburg, Mississippi and the role the city played in the building of America. 

There was time back at the dock to explore the beautiful Yazoo and Mississippi R.R. Station building, now the Old Depot Museum. 

I would have liked a little more time to view all the murals but they’re seemingly endless. Painted by Robert Dafford, the murals were unveiled to the public in April 2002.

After your busy day touring much of Vicksburg, remember to leave time to stroll and sightsee along the riverfront. It’s worth it.

An overnight in Memphis allowed plenty of time to tour, taste and listen to Memphis blues.

A Visit to Graceland

I decided to take the Graceland tour even though I was not an Elvis fan (he was a few years before I discovered the transistor radio!) That’s his house, very unimposing and looking more like a suburban home in a northern city than what I imagined.

The guided and narrated tour only allowed 8 guests at a time. 

Graceland seemed frozen in time. You can tour all of the downstairs rooms but the upstairs, where Elvis died, is off-limits.

While the house isn’t exactly huge, it’s the extensive adjacent grounds and out-buildings that give Graceland its estate-like quality.

Our Mississippi River Cruise Comes to an End

I would have been happy to do a southbound turn-around cruise and revisit all the places we saw on the journey north. 

As on all seven-night cruises, whether ocean or river, the days went by too fast. Our Mississippi river cruise covered a lot of territory. 

We traveled a total of over 453 miles on the Mississippi River. Next time, I’d like to do a repeat of this trip and continue north on the river all the way to St. Paul, Minnesota. Or reverse.

Amtrak City of New Orleans Train Back to New Orleans

Unlike everyone else on this cruise who flew home, I chose to ride overnight aboard Amtrak’s famed City of New Orleans train from Memphis to New Orleans. 

I reserved my roomette, and looked forward to a relaxing overnight, eating in the dining car (or my room) and of course, a piping hot cup of train coffee. 

Rather than a rush to the airport, this was a fabulous finale to a memorable week. Once we arrived in New Orleans, I spent an overnight and picked up a rental car for the drive back to Florida the next day. 

Cruises on the Mississippi River

Launched in 2015, American Cruise Lines 150-passenger American Heritage  is dedicated to Mississippi river cruises.

The most traveled Mississippi river cruises are between New Orleans and Memphis or St. Louis. There are also a few full-length New Orleans to St. Paul, Minnesota or reverse cruise each summer. 

You can also journey east of the Mississippi river and cruise the Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee rivers.

If you’re wondering if Mississippi river cruise ships have a casino, the answer is no. Overnight Mississippi river cruise ships do not have a casino. 

However, an option would be to take a taxi from the ship if the port that you are at has a nearby casino. Just don’t miss the boat!

Hi Denise, Thank you for reading my Mississippi river cruise article. As for “best side” of the ship, leaving New Orleans it’s nice to be port side as that’s the most scenic for the first two – three days. Then the right side (starboard) becomes the scenic side. It also depends on your itinerary, too. Either side is as good as the other, in my opinion. Enjoy the cruise…I really did and hope to go again this year! Thanks again for your comment and question. I enjoyed reading your review. I and some friends are looking at a cruise in June, New Orleans to Memphis. Is there a better side of the boat to choose your cabin? That is in regard to sun and sightseeing.

Hi Angela, Thank you so much for your question. I think a February Mississippi river cruise would be unique when it comes to the weather. It’s always cooler on the water, too, so be prepared. As for the food with American Cruise Lines…I thought everything served was very good. I really like when there are regional specials on the menu, too. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. If you have a chance to have lunch in a port town, that’s always one of my favorite things to do! Have a wonderful river cruise and thank you again for taking the time to read my article!

5 Things to Know Before Cruising the Mississippi River

Mississippi river cruises are a great way to explore the myriad top destinations along the fourth-longest river in the world: the Mississippi River. The Mississippi snakes its way from northern Minnesota to New Orleans for 2,340 miles.

Cruises on the Mississippi River usually include one section -- either Upper or Lower of the Mississippi -- of the river for week-long cruises, but it's possible to book a three-week itinerary to take in as much of America's heartland as possible.

Whether you're looking to see where Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) was born, explore Civil War sites or take in the music, food and culture of the South, you'll find a wide variety of Mississippi river cruises that suit your interests. Here are five things you need to know prior to the life-changing experience of cruising on the Mississippi River.

1. Mississippi River Cruise Itineraries Split the Waterway into Three Segments: Upper, Middle and Lower

Keep in mind that sailing against the current slows the boat and generally means fewer ports or less time in port, but you'll have more time to relax onboard.

Lower Mississippi Cruises (New Orleans to Memphis) : A weeklong sailing, which can run in either direction, this stretch of the river can include port stops like Oak Alley and Nottoway plantations, Baton Rouge and St. Francisville in Louisiana; Natchez, Vicksburg and Greenville in Mississippi; and Helena, Arkansas. The occasional New Orleans (round trip) cruise, which can run from five to seven days, typically visits the same ports, minus Memphis .

Middle Mississippi Cruises (Memphis to St. Louis) : These are also weeklong itineraries that can run in either direction, these sailings typically feature stops at New Madrid and Cape Girardeau , Missouri; Paducah, Kentucky ; and Chester, Illinois. Memphis to St. Louis sailings feature more scenic sailing and fewer port stops than other Mississippi itineraries.

Upper Mississippi Cruises (St. Louis to St. Paul) : Considered the most scenic stretch of Mississippi, these weeklong sailings stop at ports that include Hannibal, Missouri ; Davenport , Clinton and Dubuque , Iowa; La Crosse , Wisconsin; and Red Wing , Minnesota. You might also find the occasional St. Louis round trip or St. Paul round trip sailing, each of which features an extra stop in either Illinois, Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Mississippi and Ohio rivers : Some Mississippi River sailings also spend time visiting Ohio River ports.

2. Cruises On the Mississippi River Are Offered By Three Main Lines

Three main companies cruise the Mississippi throughout the year: American Cruise Lines , American Queen Voyages and Viking River Cruises . American Cruise Lines operates five ships -- a mix of old-style paddlewheelers and new modern riverboats -- on 11 itineraries, anywhere from five to 22 days, along the Mississippi, as well as the Ohio River, Cumberland River and Tennessee River.

American Queen Voyages, previously known as the American Queen Steamboat Company, operates three classic paddlewheelers on eight- to 15-night sailings on all of the Mississippi, along with the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers. Its fleet includes the American Queen , which holds the record as the biggest river steamboat.

The world's largest river cruise operator Viking River Cruises launched its first ship on the Mississippi -- and first-ever vessel in the U.S. -- in 2022. Breaking away from the tradition of paddlewheelers, the Viking Mississippi features the line's trademark Scandinavian design elements. It sails on four weeklong itineraries and one 14-night voyage.

3. Cruise the Mississippi in a Traditional Steamboat or a Modern River Cruise Ship -- You Choose

If you want to experience cruising the Mississippi River in a more "traditional" way (but with modern comforts), go for a steamboat; if you’d rather travel in something less traditional, opt for one of the modern cruise ships. In terms of itineraries, all three cruise lines offer a wide range of options.

American Cruise Lines offers a dozen itineraries ranging in length from five to 22 days. Options include round-trip cruises from New Orleans, Lower and Upper Mississippi itineraries, and themed cruises such as Music Cities and Great Smoky Mountains.

The cruise line has five ships on the Mississippi, including the traditionally-styled paddlewheelers American Heritage and American Splendor. It also runs its more modern-style riverboats -- the first of their kind in the U.S. -- American Melody , American Serenade and American Symphony on the Mississippi.

Viking has only one ship on this river, the upscale, 450-foot Viking Mississippi. The eight-day New Orleans & Southern Charms is the shortest itinerary available, while the 22-day Grand Mississippi Voyage covers the entire river, from New Orleans to St. Paul.

American Queen Voyages offers a range of nine-day Lower Mississippi itineraries aboard the American Queen, a quaint paddle-wheel steamboat. These are the best Mississippi River cruises for those looking to experience traditional river travel.

4. The Best Time to Take Cruise on the a Mississippi River Is Anytime

However, there are slight differences depending on the section of the river you’re looking to cruise. It’s best to cruise the Upper Mississippi in the spring, fall and summer, when temperatures are milder. This section should be avoided in the winter.

The Lower Mississippi has the longest season, typically running from November through December and April to mid-June, with most sailings on the bottom one-third of the river (New Orleans round trip or New Orleans to Memphis). The Lower Mississippi is best in the spring, fall and winter. High temperatures and humidity levels make the summer less enjoyable.

With Louisiana and Mississippi at their hottest and muggiest during the summer, the bulk of the summer season is split between Upper Mississippi sailings and Ohio River sailings, with the Upper Mississippi taking over again for the most of the month of October.

Even on the Upper Mississippi, temperatures can climb into the 90s, and humidity is high during the summer, so be prepared for sudden thunderstorms. The weather cools down quite considerably (especially in the morning and evening) come autumn. Mosquitos can also be a problem, so be sure to bring insect repellent.

5. Be Wary of Weather on the Mississippi River Changing Your Cruise Itinerary

The same way a hurricane might force an oceangoing cruise ship to change course, bad weather on the rivers can alter itineraries . For instance, one year's drought along the Mississippi kept waters so low that riverboats couldn't sail upriver, and operators had to push some of their Upper Mississippi sailings onto the Ohio.

Another year, too much rain flooded the river, making it impossible for riverboats to get under bridges and forcing the closing of several locks. The result was the same as during the drought. Boats scheduled to sail the Upper Mississippi were diverted onto the Ohio.

They’re surprisingly easy to drive too, thanks to powerful thrusters which make navigating locks a breeze.

This New York round trip  takes in the Hudson River’s best bits, busting the myth that its most spectacular section weaves through the Big Apple. You’ll explore it on the American Star, which has room for just 100 passengers and offers several stop-offs in the beautiful Catskill Mountains area. The cruise is especially popular with fans of architecture, who come to admire historic buildings such as the Vanderbilt Mansion (the former home of Franklin D. Roosevelt).

This is another fantastic option for history buffs – a Mississippi River cruise filled with visits to some of America’s most important historic sites.
