Southern Legacy:

The natchez pilgrimage.

6 Days / 5 Nights

The elegance and charm of the southern states convey what we remember of the 19 th century prior to the Civil War. Each year, the town of Natchez, Mississippi recalls these heady days of grandeur, mansions and beautiful hooped gowns during the spring and fall pilgrimages. Enjoy viewing the stunning interiors of several privately owned properties to get a glimpse of these innocent times of long ago.

The annual Natchez Pilgrimage is a celebration of the antebellum history of our country. Twice each year, Natchez locals open their historic homes to visitors. Come along as we journey back in time to this more genteel time in the beautiful spring of the year. We make it as far as Sikeston, MO this evening for a one night check in at the Drury Inn & Suites.

We motor further south, rounding Memphis and past Jackson, Mississippi and into Natchez early evening. Following check in at a three-star property, enjoy an included dinner at a local eatery.

After a great night's sleep, a local guide meets us for an historic driving tour of Natchez. In 1716 French colonists settled here making Natchez one of the oldest and most successful cities on the lower Mississippi River. The first route into Natchez was the Natchez Trace, originally a buffalo trail used by Native Americans and early settlers. Two years older than their little sister, New Orleans, the city has a rich heritage influenced by the French, Spanish, English and African communities. Known as The Little Easy, the former residents built their city for a perpetual party. Today the locals are more subdued but still know how to have a good time. During the Spring Pilgrimage, several privately owned historic homes are open to the public. With over 1000 structures and districts on the National Historic Register and 13 properties designated as National Landmarks, the wide variety of architecture and history provide a fascinating combination. Today, three private mansion tours - TBA ,will be on the agenda with an included luncheon at a local southern eatery in town.

After breakfast, we travel to Longwood Mansion. Longwood, also known as Nutt's Folly, is a historic antebellum octagonal mansion. Built in part by enslaved people, the mansion is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. Later, Stanton Hall, one of the most magnificent and Palatial Greek homes in America, occupies an entire city block in downtown Natchez. This home stands 5 stories tall and was originally 14,000 square feet. Many original furnishings and beautiful antiques are displayed throughout the home as well as one of a kind arched millwork in halls and parlors. Enjoy a tour and included luncheon in the onsite Carriage House.

This morning we depart Natchez for nearby Vicksburg. We start in the visitor center where we watch the orientation film Here Brothers Fought, which describes the historical events of the Vicksburg campaign and historic battlefield site. Following our visit, we continue travels northbound to our final overnight in Cape Girardeau, MO.

The final day of our tour is here, We hope you enjoyed the hospitality of this southern destination and we'll see you traveling with us again soon!

Pilgrimage: a long tradition withstanding the test of time

Published 7:00 am Saturday, March 9, 2024

By editorialboard

natchez pilgrimage tours tours

Seemingly overnight, an explosion of pink, purple and white blooms have appeared in azalea bushes. In Natchez, that can only mean Spring Pilgrimage is not far behind.

Today, the Spring Pilgrimage officially begins.

It’s our favorite time of year next to fall. Not only do our spring blooms showcase their colors, but Natchez showcases southern hospitality in its truest form.

Email newsletter signup

While Natchez has a lot to offer history and architecture enthusiasts year-round, there is a bit more to explore during the Spring Pilgrimage, when more than 30 homes open their doors to strangers for tours.

This uniquely-Natchez tradition has survived more than 90 years through its evolution — from wearing hoopskirts and telling only a romanticized version of history from the perspective of wealthy white plantation owners to coming face-to-face with the atrocities of slavery in an effort to tell the whole story.

Two new, recently restored homes are in the lineup of 19 Pilgrimage Garden Club houses which are open to the public for tours from March 9 through April 9.

These are The Briars, overlooking the Mississippi River from the highest point on the bluff, and Holly Hedges, one of the oldest structures in Natchez dating back to the late 1700s, which we love for its unique pattern of hedges.

Additionally, a one-day special event at Hope Farm on March 30 will share updates on the restoration effort of Laine and Kevin Berry following a tragic fire in 2023. In addition to destroying much of the house, the fire claimed the life of long-time Pilgrimage Garden Club member and previous owner Ethel Banta.

Also on tour with the Pilgrimage Garden Club are Auburn, Bontura, Brandon Hall, The Burn, Concord Quarters, Green Leaves, Lansdowne, Longwood, Oak Hill, Propinquity, Ravenna, Richmond, Rip Rap, Rosalie, Routhland, Stanton Hall and Sweet Auburn.

Tickets to Pilgrimage Garden Club tour homes and more special events can be purchased at natchezpilgrimage.com.

While preparing for its 100th anniversary in 2027, the Natchez Garden Club also opens its 14 historic tour houses from March 8 through April 28.

These include Linden, Monmouth, Choctaw Hall, the House on Ellicott’s Hill, Myrtle, Sunnyside, The Towers, Cherokee, Dunleith, Glenfield, Elms Court, The J.N. Stone House, Gloucester and Magnolia Hall.

Tour tickets can be purchased at the individual homes or at Little Easy Tours or Visit Natchez.

More details on the tour houses can be found at natchezgardenclub.org.

We continue to celebrate Natchez’s richly diverse history while exploring the grandeur of the Antebellum South as guests immerse themselves in the past, and come to grips with bitter realities, to preserve these houses for generations to come.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Jennifer Lopez cancels handful of shows on first tour in 5 years, fans demand explanation

natchez pilgrimage tours tours

Jennifer Lopez has canceled shows in seven cities on her upcoming " This Is Me…Now The Tour ," her first tour in five years.

According to Ticketmaster's website , Lopez will no longer stop in Nashville, New Orleans, Raleigh, Atlanta, Houston, Cleveland and Tampa.

Ticketmaster's website says that the event organizer has canceled the event and that no action is required to obtain a refund. At this time, the reason for the canceled shows is unknown.

USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Lopez, Ticketmaster and Live Nation.

Some fans expressed disappointment in the comments section on the website.

"The concert in Raleigh was cancelled. and for several days now we have been waiting for at least some comments, but no one is giving them. This is disrespectful towards the audience! I can’t even buy a new ticket in another state now, because I don’t know which cities will cancel!" one person wrote.

Another commented, "The show in ATL was canceled. Why was this show canceled with no explanation."

In February, Lopez announced her upcoming tour in celebration of her new record "This Is Me...Now," which released in mid-February as a 16-track deluxe album.

Lopez has said that this might be her final album and she doesn’t suggest otherwise when asked to explain why she would be happy with “This is Me … Now” as her swan song.

“This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love. I’ve been guy on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” Lopez previously told USA TODAY.

Jennifer Lopez says new album sums up her feelings, could be her last: 'True love does exist'

She added: “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”

The upcoming tour will also feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Lopez's most recent tour in 2019, the "It's My Party" tour, sold out venues across the country.

White House Memo

A Corvette, Swimsuit Shots and a Trip to Mongolia: Biden Offers a Tour of His Life

Transcripts of five hours of interviews with the special counsel released this week reveal a president with a lot on his mind and a storehouse of stories to tell.

  • Share full article

President Biden gestures while talking to a group of people, one of whom is laughing.

By Peter Baker

Reporting from Washington

They were there to talk about classified documents, but somehow President Biden’s mind had turned to Mongolia.

Something about being handed a bow and arrow during a visit and embarrassing his host. “Pure luck, I hit the goddamn target,” Mr. Biden recalled. Not so much the Mongolian leader. “The poor son of a bitch couldn’t pull it back. I was like, oh God.”

He has a large storehouse of stories, this president, and he shared them freely during interviews with prosecutors last fall. Mr. Biden described giving an oration in law school on a case he had not read and lying his way into an exclusive club in Delaware. He recounted his time with President Barack Obama and trying to “save his ass” from manipulative generals. He boasted of building a solar facility in Angola.

What any of that had to do with Mr. Biden’s handling of secret papers was not always clear, but transcripts of his five hours with the special counsel Robert K. Hur released this week opened a window into a president not often seen by the public lately. He was funny and folksy, chatty and charming, quick and quirky. In a sometimes meandering stream of consciousness, he took prosecutors on a colorful tour of his life with the occasional disquisition on the history of the Gutenberg printing press and Richard M. Nixon’s 1960 election defeat.

Of most importance to investigators, Mr. Biden was maddeningly imprecise about the government documents that ended up in his homes and offices where they did not belong. “I don’t remember how a beat-up box got in the garage,” he said. All told, he offered variations of “I don’t remember” or “I don’t recall” more than 50 times.

And there were other things he could not recall — what a fax machine is called, the name of a former cabinet colleague, the agency that preserves official papers. Discussing negotiations with a challenging nation, he named Afghanistan, then corrected himself to say that he meant Iraq only to have one of his lawyers tell him he was actually referring to Iran.

But he was clear and cogent through most of the questioning, which stretched over two days in October even as he was responding to the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. At times, it seemed less an interrogation than a late-night talk show that prosecutors were loath to interrupt, a showcase of presidential patter that swung from self-serving to self-revealing, from a wrenching depiction of his son’s death bed to a cringey mention of the first lady’s body.

“I just hope you didn’t find any risqué pictures of my wife in a bathing suit,” he told interrogators who had searched his private homes as part of their investigation. “Which you probably did. She’s beautiful.”

A few minutes later, he offered advice to the younger people in the room, which was pretty much all of them. “I just warn you all, never make one great eulogy,” he counseled, “because you get asked to do everybody’s eulogy.”

This was the loquacious Joe Biden that many in Washington remember from his years before the White House, before he learned to check himself a little more in public and stopped giving so many interviews and news conferences where he might go off script. Mr. Biden has always had a mind that wandered and a tongue that was loose, often to the chagrin of his advisers.

His off-duty passions fairly leap off the 258 pages of transcript — particularly real estate and automotive vehicles.

“I’m a frustrated architect,” Mr. Biden said, constantly thinking about how to build or redesign homes. His family even gave him a drafting board. “In order to try to convince me not to run for the Senate for the 19th time,” he related, “my wife said, ‘Look, you don’t run, I’ll pay for architectural school for you.’”

She had her limits, though. When he mulled adding a swimming pool to a house in Virginia where they moved after leaving the vice president’s residence, she drew a red line of her own: “Jill’s going: ‘What are you doing? What are you talking about? Stop.’”

Mr. Biden’s devotion to home design was nonetheless evident. He corrected prosecutors who referred to his house in Wilmington, Del., as “the lake house,” saying, “It’s no lake, it’s a pond.” And while he might have forgotten names or dates, he exhibited perfect recall about the layout of his homes, leading a verbal expedition through them for the benefit of Mr. Hur, who noted that the president appeared “to have a photographic understanding and recall of the house.”

Then there was his cherished Corvette, which Mr. Biden always speaks of as if it were a favorite child. “It drove me crazy. I wanted to drive it,” he said, referring to limits imposed by the Secret Service, which frowns on presidents and vice presidents taking the wheel. “The worst part was they said I couldn’t drive it outside the driveway. It’s a long driveway. So I’d get to the bottom of the driveway, tack it up to about four grand.” At that point, the transcript notes, the president of the United States “makes a car sound.”

He started talking about “a big 4 by 4,” probably a Ford Bronco. “Zero to 60 in 4.6,” he exclaimed.

“That’s fast,” Mr. Hur agreed, indulgently.

“Yeah,” Mr. Biden said. “By the way, you know how it works? It’s really cool.”

“Sir,” Mr. Hur tried to interject, “I’d love — I would love, love to hear much more about this, but I do have a few more questions to get through.”

Mr. Biden ignored him. “You can take 30 seconds,” he said, “but you put your foot on the brake, you hit, you hit a button that’s in the — it says ‘launch.’ You step your foot on the accelerator all the way down.”

For five hours in the Map Room of the White House, in fact, Mr. Biden was all about the accelerator and not so much about the brake. He talked of passing the Violence Against Women Act (“really meant a lot to me”), writing his first memoir (“it was on the best-seller’s list”) and promoting legalization of same-sex marriage (“I’m the guy that got that changed,” which might surprise former Justice Anthony M. Kennedy). He mentioned the day he met his first wife, offered thoughts on agriculture on the Delmarva Peninsula and talked ruefully of once being “the poorest man in Congress.”

He deployed phrases that dated him. When he wanted to refer to someone in a generic way, he used a made-up name, as in “Charlie Schmedlap” or “Senator Schmedlap.” When he was describing how to learn more about what was happening, he invoked an old nursery rhyme, saying he was trying to find out “who killed Cock Robin.”

Among those who made cameo appearances in his circuitous discourse were Strom Thurmond, Cory Booker and Benjamin Netanyahu. Shown a photo of himself with an arm around Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and an estranged friend, he said, “They’re the old days.” From the cold type of a transcript, it was not clear — was he wistful or bitter?

But he held out hope that he would one day get help of a more eternal nature from another acquaintance. “I still communicate with the pope, you know what I mean,” he said. “But is it constant? No. Anyway.” He went on: “He’s my ticket.” The lawyers laughed. “That was a joke,” he made clear in case it was not. (At the same time, as he often does in public, he wanted to make sure his interlocutors did not think he was kidding when he was not. “I’m not being facetious,” he said eight times during the interviews.)

He told well-worn stories of deciding to run for president in 2020 — how a dying Beau Biden, his eldest son, insisted that he not withdraw from public life out of grief, how he bristled when President Donald J. Trump equated white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., with the protesters against them and how his grandchildren called a family meeting to urge him to get into the race.

Some of the more interesting stories, though, were of his early adulthood, now more than half a century ago. He “didn’t take law school very seriously,” he admitted, but once gave a 10-minute talk in class without reading the material and “the whole class stood up, started clapping.” He wanted to move to Idaho after law school but went to a job interview at a law firm in Delaware where he was told, “I assume you’re expecting to be hired on your looks.”

And then there was the man with the mutilated private parts. It was one of Mr. Biden’s first cases as a lawyer, involving an oil refinery worker who was injured by a fire in a containment vessel. “He lost part of his penis and one of his testicles and he was 23 years old,” the president explained matter of factly.

A senior partner ordered him to write a motion to dismiss the man’s lawsuit. “And son of a bitch, it prevailed,” Mr. Biden recounted. “And I looked over at that kid and his wife home with two little kids, and I thought: ‘Son of a bitch, I’m in the wrong business. I’m not made for this.’”

So he eventually went into politics instead, embarking on a career that would one day take him to the White House.

Biden’s Mental Acuity Under Scrutiny

Comments about president biden’s age and memory in the special counsel’s report have captured democrats’ fears ahead of the november election and fueled republicans in their efforts to cast the president as weak..

Portrayal of Biden’s Memory: Robert Hur, the special counsel in the case examining President Biden’s handling of classified files, accused the president of “significant” memory problems in his report. The transcript of Hur’s interview  with the president as part of the inquiry offers context to his report .

An Age-Old Question: How old is too old to be president? The report has thrust the issue back into the spotlight  just as America seems poised to elect a commander in chief well past typical retirement age, no matter who wins in November.

Implications for 2024 Election: Why is the age issue hurting Biden  so much more than Donald Trump? Both are over 75, but voters are much less likely to worry that Trump is too old to serve .

Voter Reactions: To Americans in their 70s and 80s, the renewed questions swirling around Biden’s age have resonated in deeply personal ways . Many agree that it’s an issue, while others feel the criticism of Biden is insulting.

The Science of Memory Loss: After the report’s release, medical experts noted that the special counsel’s judgments on Biden’s mental health did not appear to be based on science .

Olivia Rodrigo handed out free condoms and morning-after pills at her St. Louis GUTS world tour stop, while a portion of her tour’s total ticket sales will go to abortion funds across the country through her new initiative Fund 4 Good .

At her St. Louis stop on Tuesday, Rodrigo worked with the Missouri Abortion Fund to pass out Julie morning-after pills. The brand launched in September 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade and was built to change the conversation around emergency contraception, expanding access to communities that need it the most.

Julie shared a statement following the concert , writing, “We launched Julie to rewrite the morning-after experience for a new generation. Replacing the stigma and shame often associated with emergency contraception with access, exploration and education is core to who we are, and we’re thankful for artists like Olivia Rodrigo and initiatives like the Missouri Abortion Fund who share our mission.”

In a social media post, a fan who attended the St. Louis tour stop shared a photo of two emergency contraceptive pill boxes . On top of them was a purple, square sticker that read, “Funding abortions? It’s a good idea, right?” seemingly a reference to Rodrigo’s song, “bad idea right?”

In addition to providing contraceptives at her shows, the singer-songwriter also has National Network of Abortion Funds tables set up at each tour location.

“Supporting abortion funds has never been more critical, in an era where abortion access is under relentless attack,” Oriaku Njoku, National Network of Abortion Funds executive director, told USA TODAY when the Fund 4 Good launched . “We are excited to be in partnership with Olivia Rodrigo, as she’s uplifting the critical work of abortion funds, and leading (her fans) into the movement towards reproductive freedom!”

During her performance at Glastonbury Festival in June 2022, the day after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , the Grammy winner and Lily Allen dedicated the latter’s song, “Fuck You,” to the Supreme Court justice s who voted to overturn it.

“I’m devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this,” Rodrigo said at the time. “I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a shit about freedom.”

She added, “This song goes out to the justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you.”

Travis Kelce exchanges friendship bracelets with Taylor Swift fan at Eras Tour in new clip from Singapore concert

Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce is winning over the Swifties.

The Kansas City Chiefs star was seen in a new clip posted on Twitter exchanging friendship bracelets with a female fan following Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Singapore over the weekend.

Kelce appeared to be walking through a hallway when a Swiftie seemingly stopped him to ask if he’d trade the handmade jewelry.

Travis Kelce

In the inaudible clip, the three-time Super Bowl champ quickly made the exchange, giving the fan a friendship bracelet that read “Travis” and a fist-bump before walking away.

Kelce, 34, supported Swift, 34, at her Friday and Saturday night performances in Singapore as he danced to the “Cruel Summer” songstress’ greatest tracks.

On both dates, he stood out in the VIP box at National Stadium as he sported all white and wore sunglasses.

Swift even gave a sweet shoutout to her beau on Friday night, once again changing her lyrics to “Karma,” singing, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me.”

A fan video showed the NFL star swaying his hands in the air while beaming in excitement.

After the show, the “Cruel Summer” songstress quickly raced over to Kelce to give him a massive kiss backstage.

The tight end detailed his “unique” experience in Asia during his and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast episode Wednesday, revealing how he spent his time abroad.

“I got to check out the world’s largest greenhouse,” he explained. “How about that? I’m a big plant guy. Loved seeing f–king enormous trees. It was cool as f–k, they had the world’s biggest waterfall in a greenhouse, too.”

“It was awesome man. Everything was blooming at the same time, it was so f–king unique and so nice.”

Kelce also applauded his “amazing” girlfriend for her Eras Tour performance as she now prepares to take a nearly two-month break before returning to the stage in May.

“I got to see two amazing shows of the Eras Tour. The last of the leg that Taylor has until she’s back at it here in a couple months,” he continued.

The pro-athlete’s appearance at Swift’s concerts comes after he wrapped up his NFL season.

The “Lover” hitmaker was notably at several of her boyfriend’s games and it appears Kelce is now taking the time to support Swift.

In December, the 14-time Grammy winner opened up about the importance of couples showing up for each other during her Time Magazine interview.

“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care,” she said.

“The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
