Uniworld River Cruises

The In-Depth History of Uniworld River Cruises

Uniworld River Cruises is more than just a river cruise line; it’s a testament to visionary entrepreneurship, adaptability, and a passion for unparalleled luxury.

The brand’s journey from its inception to its current status as a leader in boutique river cruising is both inspiring and intriguing.

The Genesis: Serba Illich’s Vision

The seeds of Uniworld River Cruises were sown in 1976 by Yugoslavian entrepreneur Serba Illich. Originating as a tour operator company based in California, Uniworld initially provided guided tours primarily in Europe.

Transition to River Cruising

As the travel industry evolved, Illich recognized the untapped potential of river cruising. In the 1990s, Uniworld transitioned from land tours to focus on river cruises, a move that was both timely and strategic.

This was during a period when river cruising was beginning to gain traction as an intimate, immersive way to explore destinations.

Uniworld River Cruise

Partnership with The Travel Corporation

The early 2000s marked a pivotal moment in Uniworld’s history. The company formed a partnership with The Travel Corporation (TTC), a global conglomerate with various travel brands under its umbrella.

This alliance provided Uniworld with the resources and support to expand and refine its river cruise offerings.

The Birth of Boutique River Cruising

Under the stewardship of the TTC and with the visionary leadership of Beatrice Tollman, President and Founder of the boutique Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Uniworld underwent a transformative phase.

Drawing inspiration from the boutique hotel concept, the brand redefined luxury river cruising. Each ship was uniquely designed, resembling a floating boutique hotel, replete with exquisite antiques, original artworks, and bespoke furnishings.

Uniworld River Cruise

Expanding Horizons

With its revamped image and emphasis on luxury, Uniworld began to expand its horizons. Beyond the popular European rivers like the Danube, Rhine, and Seine, Uniworld ventured into less-traveled waters.

By the 2010s, they were offering cruises in Asia, Egypt, and even Russia, providing travelers with a broad palette of cultural and scenic experiences.

Sustainability and Community Engagement

Recognizing the significance of sustainable travel, Uniworld has, over the years, integrated eco-friendly practices and community engagement into its operations.

From green ship designs to partnerships with local artisans and support for community projects, the brand’s commitment to responsible tourism has become a core aspect of its identity.

Today: A Symbol of Luxury and Authenticity

Today, Uniworld River Cruises is celebrated for its unparalleled luxury, attention to detail, and authentic experiences.

While its fleet has grown and its destinations have expanded, the brand remains true to its ethos of offering boutique, personalized voyages that resonate with travelers seeking both luxury and substance.

What's the hype behind Uniworld River Cruises? A 2024 review

What's the hype behind Uniworld River Cruises? A 2024 review

Booking a cruise is similar to an investment in your travel experiences. It might be worth it, and it might not. Wondering if Uniworld River Cruises are one of the worthy cruises to book for your travels? Keep reading to find everything to know for you to make your decision.

uniworld river cruises what's included

Going on a cruise of some kind is probably on most people's bucket lists. For a good reason too! Who doesn't want to be traveling while sipping margaritas aboard a large floating luxury ship? With cruises taking it further enhancing entertainment onboard, you can now watch movies, go on waterslides, or even gamble in casinos aboard some cruises.

Of course, it's no surprise that cruise lines are some of the most expensive travel experiences out there.

How do you know which cruises are worth the money? It can be hard deciding on which cruise to book with. After all, you're spending a considerable amount of money on a travel experience that you're not sure will deliver.

If you're more into yachts, make sure you check out our review of  The Yacht Week !

Today, we'll be reviewing Uniworld River Cruises, one of the more popular river cruises operating mainly in Europe but having cruises worldwide. Uniworld River Cruises have truly made a name for themselves in the world of luxurious voyages. They're voted the world's best river cruise line in  Travel + Leisure's global awards .

But, do they live up to the expectations owing to the hype around this prestigious company? Let's find out.

Visit their website and click on 'Request a Quote' to book your next cruise with them. Once you've filled in the necessary details, their customer service will contact you soon. You'll get the required information, upcoming trips for your desired locations, and special offers. Look through the packages, and you'll find that some of them have Uniworld's newest feature – railway trips alongside the cruise!

Who Owns Uniworld?

Uniworld River Cruises is as American as possible. Acquired by The Travel Corporation (TTC), a company owning 40 award-winning international travel-related companies, its acclaimed position doesn't come off as a surprise. A prized possession of the power couple – Stanley Tollman and Beatrice Tollman, TTC has been handed down over four generations of this family and continues to live up to its reputation.

With 100 years of TTC and 46 of Uniworld, the cruise line operates worldwide throughout the year.

Where Do Uniworld River Cruises Go?

With Uniworld, there's an endless list of possibilities for your next dream vacation! Think of Europe, South America, Asia, and a small part of Africa, too. Those are the continents you can sail through luxuriously on these cruises.

Let your tastebuds experience an out-of-world deliciousness of authentic Italian cuisine, or lose yourself in the rich history of the sacred Ganges in India. With 20+ countries on the list, a tour on this cruise might be everything you could've wanted for a perfect holiday escape!

Modern and luxurious uniworld river cruises.

What Do Uniworld Cruises Include?

Onboard or onshore, Uniworld vows to take care of each and every need of their travelers. If you feel like you're breaking the bank with an  oh-so-oh-so-average  cruise, you'll be having the tour of a lifetime on this cruise.

Beginning with the necessity- food, they offer fine dining, nothing less than five-star restaurants.

With a range of foods on the menu thrice a day, you're free to choose whatever suits your tastebuds. The exclusive alcohol variety is a must-have, in addition to your meals! Note that alcohol-serving policies differ from region to region, for instance, in Egypt. No need to fret about "what could you possibly do for an entire month on a cruise?" because the onboard activities and cultural enrichments will keep you busy.

Life on a cruise.

The gym and fitness classes keep active travelers in shape. Let's not forget something as essential to us as oxygen nowadays, Wi-Fi! The signals will be available no matter which corner of the ship you walk towards.

That's the onboard amenities; what about onshore, then? Travelers get a tour guide included in the package who knows every nook and cranny of the destinations. They'll definitely help you explore the spot to its fullest. While keeping the energy high, the tours also come with the option of an onshore bicycle trip.

Has Uniworld Cancelled Any River Cruises?

Due to the prevalent pandemic and worldwide lockdown policies, the cruise line had to suspend their tours indefinitely in 2021. They canceled the pre-scheduled tours starting from March 2020 to June 2021.

When will Uniworld River Cruises Resume?

The company had already resumed its tours in June 2021 when countries started to reopen their borders for international traveling. Uniworld River Cruises adopted a wait-and-see tactic once the operations had resumed, too, in case of another episode of rising in COVID cases and lockdowns.

For now, rest assured that Uniworld is currently operating to its full potential. With more and more countries going back to the way things were, the cruise line is ready to embark on multiple journeys in 2022.

How Much Do Uniworld River Cruises Cost?

You may find several estimated quotes on the internet for Uniworld river cruises. Still, it's best to get an exact quote from the team.

There's no set price for these cruises, and it depends on the time of the year, destination, number of days, add-on amenities, and the ship, to name a few factors. You'll find packages as low as $1799 and as high as up to $20,000!

To save a few bucks, you can visit their ' current offers'  section and browse through the sales on upcoming trips.

Cruise at night.

Are Uniworld River Cruises worth it?

A cruise line that's luxurious as ever, and reviews that speak the same about it. Uniworld has an established name in the industry. It never tires of the high praises it attains from its travelers.

Safe to say, only a handful of people rated it anything below a 4-star service, and those, too, mainly because of the canceled trips during peak COVID season. Besides that, occasional reviews added upon the unfriendly behavior of the staff. Overall, we found the reviews of their services to be friendly, professional, and above most people's expectations!

Our Rating: 4.7/5

Following World War II, Hungary spent 40 years as the Soviet-backed Hungarian People’s Republic, a fascist regime that was massively unpopular for its oppressive politics, brutal secret police force (the ÁVH), and declining economic conditions. An uprising in 1956 failed to eradicate the Soviet-backed government, but did eventually result in more liberal policies. The Hungarian People’s Republic finally ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.

Step into the past for a tour of this fraught history, beginning at the Budapest Retro Interactive Museum. Afterwards, you'll drive by Heroes’ Square on your way to Gellért Hill for spectacular views over Budapest, where you’ll see Hungary’s own Statue of Liberty. Originally erected as a monument to the Soviet “liberation” of Hungary from Nazi occupation, the statue’s inscription was later altered to celebrate Hungarian independence, freedom, and prosperity without mention of Soviet intervention.

Start your tour with a drive down the picture-worthy Andrássy Avenue. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of Neo-Renaissance architecture and city planning. Your coach will head into Budapest’s former Jewish quarter. Despite being one of the smallest districts in Budapest, it is still one of the liveliest, with a dense population and a plethora of bars, coffee shops, and street food stands. You’ll see the area’s unique streets and hidden courtyards before exiting the coach at Dohány Street Synagogue.

Dohány Street Synagogue, also known as Central Synagogue or the Great Synagogue, is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second-largest in the world. It’s gilded onion domes and red-striped facade make it one of the most interesting buildings in Budapest. The interior is even more ornate, with intricately designed ceilings and a combined floor and gallery space that can accommodate thousands of worshippers.

Later, you’ll visit the Vučedol Museum. The basic idea behind the concept of this unique museum was integration into the terrain—the entire structure is designed to be mostly buried in the ground and only the façade is open to the landscape. Its shape, as serpentine, follows terrain, and on whose green roof you can reach the archaeological sites over the museum. Along the path, you’ll encounter the various Vučedol culture archaeological findings that have been discovered to date, which showcase the daily life and customs during a turbulent time of the immigration of the first Indo-Europeans and their relationship with the native population, the blending of material cultures and religions. Following your time at the museum, enjoy lunch at the local family restaurant.

Next, you're off to Vukovar, whose bullet-riddled water tower stands as a reminder of the bitter Croatian War of Independence, fought between 1991 and 1995, when Croatia sought to break away from Yugoslavia. Thousands died during the siege of Vukovar, which was heavily damaged. Here you will see lasting signs of the conflict, but you will also see a revitalized community, determined to rebuild.

As a motorcoach carries you through the city, you’ll see a mix of architectural styles that reveal the city’s past, ranging from Gothic, Ottoman, baroque, and art nouveau to utilitarian Communist apartment blocks and modern high-rises. While Belgrade has been no stranger to political upheaval, the 19th-century Residence of Princess Ljubica and serene old residential streets speak of calmer days, as do the bustling present-day café-lined boulevards. You’ll pass the tomb and memorial museum of Josip Broz Tito, which is located at the site of Tito’s former residence in Belgrade’s affluent Dedinje neighborhood, and visit Kalemegdan Fortress, high on a hill above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.

Ancient Romans built the first fortress here, and successive conquerors and defenders—Slavs, Byzantines, Ottomans, Habsburgs—continued to build and destroy fortifications on this site for another 1,500 years. Walk along the old stone walls, passing monuments and memorials (some will surprise you—poets and composers are honored here as well as military actions), for a sense of Serbia’s distant and more recent history. It’s not the only intriguing historical sight you’ll see today, however. You will also visit the Karadjordjevic Dynasty Palace and sip a glass of sparkling Serbian wine as you tour a compound of palaces built in the 1920s and 1930s. Serbia’s royal family, which is related to most of Europe’s royalty, has a strictly honorary position in modern-day democratic Serbia, but Crown Prince Alexander (who did not feel that taking the title of king was appropriate when his father died in exile in the United States in 1972) and his family still live in these palaces. A local expert will show you the public rooms of the Royal Palace, the White Palace, the adjacent chapel, and the spacious grounds.

Let's Go: "I Bike Belgrade" Tour

Mount a bike and spend a leisurely half-day getting an up-close look at Belgrade, complete with lively commentary from your guide, who will tell you not just about the tumultuous recent past but also what it’s like to live here. Ride past Branko’s Bridge, Staro Sajmište (a former ...

Mount a bike and spend a leisurely half-day getting an up-close look at Belgrade, complete with lively commentary from your guide, who will tell you not just about the tumultuous recent past but also what it’s like to live here. Ride past Branko’s Bridge, Staro Sajmište (a former concentration camp), the Palace of Serbia, and Hotel Jugoslavija; after a refreshing stop at a traditional fisherman’s bar, you’ll be ready to pedal to Kalemegdan Fortress and see a bit of Serbia’s more distant past.

Golubac, Cruising the Iron Gates

Golubac

Head ashore to explore a Paleolithic site and an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval fortress. All along the way, history lines the banks of the river. Keep an eye out for Trajan’s Plaque, which the ancient Romans erected to commemorate the road they anchored in the steep cliffs above the water, and Golubac Castle, built in the 14th century and attacked successively by the Serbs, Magyars, and Turks.

Unwind onboard as you cruise the breathtaking Iron Gates, an 83-mile-long (134-kilometer-long) stretch of scenic gorges that were cut through the Carpathian and Balkan mountains over eons by the Danube River. These gorges, which act as a natural border between Serbia and Romania, are among the most dramatic and beautiful sights in all of Europe. This was one of the swiftest and most dangerous stretches of the river before two dams were built: Iron Gate I and Iron Gate II. Construction on the dams began in 1964 and took 20 years to complete; they have dramatically altered the area’s landscape, raising the water level by 114 feet (35 meters) and drowning several islands and villages.

Lepenski Vir Archaeological Park and Golubac Castle

Your first stop is Golubac Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, a powerhouse that has loomed over the Danube for centuries.

Later you'll visit Lepenski Vir which is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric archeological sites from the Stone Age, located on...

Later you'll visit Lepenski Vir which is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric archeological sites from the Stone Age, located on the Danube. It was once the epicenter of one of the most highly developed prehistoric cultures, with complex social relations and even rudimentary urban planning. The discovery of this prehistoric settlement has changed the image experts once had about the early Stone Age, expanding scientists’ knowledge about human communities that walked the earth millennia ago.

Let's Go: Hike to Golubac Castle

Majestically rising from the south bank of the Danube River is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. Golubac Castle and its 10 towers are situated strategically at the entrance of the Iron Gates, a narrow gorge with steep cliffs on each side of the Danube separating Serbia and...

Majestically rising from the south bank of the Danube River is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. Golubac Castle and its 10 towers are situated strategically at the entrance of the Iron Gates, a narrow gorge with steep cliffs on each side of the Danube separating Serbia and Romania. This portion of the Danube is often considered one of the most scenic, and you can take in all its glory on our hike up to the castle.

Vidin is a port town on the Danube that once played an important role in medieval Bulgarian politics, as the great fortress Baba Vida attests. It’s your base for an unusual excursion today—a visit to the fascinating Belogradchik rock formations. Or you can indulge in a tasting at a local winery.

Belogradchik Red Rock Valley

Drive through the scenic Bulgarian countryside to Belogradchik, a small town in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, not far from the Serbian border. After some light refreshment at a local hotel, you’ll be ready to explore the astonishing rock formations nearby, which are over 200 million years old—and have inspired nearly as many legends! Many of the strange wind- and weather-hewn shapes have names, such as Adam and Eve, the Bear, and the Castle. The outcroppings formed a natural defense for the town that was enhanced with man-made fortifications over the centuries. Whether you choose to hike with a local expert to the top of the path or not, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views. Your return will take you past some sights that highlight Vidin’s mixed heritage: the Orthodox cathedral, the Turkish mosque, the Konak (the 18th-century headquarters of the Turkish police), and the cruciform barracks (which date to the 1790s). The final stop will be Baba Vida, whose stern 10th-century stone walls were built on the site of a Roman watchtower.

Dos Alamos Wine Estate Visit and Tasting

In the village of Negovanovtsi, you’ll find the Dos Alamos Winery. This boutique estate makes excellent use of the local terroir, where a combination of sandy soil, continental weather, and plenty of sunshine blesses their hillside vineyards with high-quality grapes.

Bulgaria’s foremost Danube port, Ruse is sometimes called “Little Vienna” for its elegant 19th-century mansions and public buildings.

In the evening, a special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you.

Twice the capital of Bulgaria—before and after the Ottomans conquered the nation—Veliko Tarnovo climbs steep hills above the Yantra River, topped by the ruins of Tsarevets, the stronghold where Bulgaria’s kings ruled between 1185 and 1393. The remains of the great stone walls and towers that you see formed the historic heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire. History lives in this town, as a quick look at the wares for sale in Samovod Marketplace will show you: Handicrafts are all made by local artisans using ancient, medieval, or Renaissance technologies. You’ll have time to peruse the exceptional local pottery and textiles there before heading to Arbanassi, home to six amazing 17th-century stone churches, each one decorated with colorful and intricate frescoes. Learn something of the multicultural history of this fascinating town at the Ethnographic Museum and visit the UNESCO-designated Nativity Church, where murals of the Nativity, the Last Judgment, and the zodiac brilliantly blend religious and humanist iconography. At another of the churches, Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, you’ll hear the otherworldly singing of an Orthodox choir in a short concert. Your day’s adventure includes a traditional three-course Bulgarian lunch, complete with live folk music.

Walk through the woods of Rusenski Lom, a protected region that is home to a wide variety of rare birds, among other wildlife, to Ivanovo Rock Monastery—once an enclave of more than 40 churches and chapels that the devout built inside caves above the Lom River Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous for its beautiful and well-preserved 14th-century murals.

Your next destination, the Basarbovo Rock Monastery, is the only rock monastery where monks still live and worship today. Climb the narrow rock stairway to the 15th-century cloister, which is cut into the limestone cliffs high above the Lom River, and take a look at the arresting frescoes. You’ll also spend some time in Ruse, a city with an easygoing, gracious feeling. Freedom Square, a huge open plaza, takes its name from the Freedom Monument, which soars from the center of the square; the stately Belle Epoque buildings surrounding the square attest to the city’s prosperity in the 1890s. Stroll along wide, tree-lined Alexandrovska, the main pedestrian street that links the city’s many attractive squares, encountering such landmark sights as Ruse’s grand theater, the city museum, and the first movie theater (it opened in 1896).

Giurgiu (Disembark), Transfer to Bucharest

Bucharest

This morning, you’ll disembark the ship in Giurgiu and drive through the countryside to Bucharest, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic city tour and a visit to People’s Palace. Tonight, you’ll relax in the comfort of a luxury hotel located in the heart of the city, Romania’s capital and its cultural and economic center.

Bucharest Communist Tour with People's Palace

Bucharest began as a fortress in the 15th century, a warlike origin that set the tone for its turbulent history. It saw glory days as the summer residence of the Wallachian princes and was burned to the ground by the Ottoman Turks; then Austria-Hungary and imperial Russia fought over it for a century. After Wallachia and Moldavia united to form Romania in the mid-19th century, Bucharest enjoyed a prosperity that was reflected in its extravagant architecture, some of which miraculously survived WWII bombing and Communist building programs.

You’ll see Bucharest’s very own Triumphal Arch, which is modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and Victoria Boulevard, lined with chic shops and handsomely restored pre-war buildings—and sites where protests brought down Ceaușescu’s regime in 1989. These days Bucharest enjoys a lively and eclectic cultural scene, hosting international arts festivals and concerts, and a measure of prosperity apparent in its busy cafés and thriving street life.

For the most dazzling stop of the day, you’ll visit the colossal People’s Palace, the second largest office building in the world. It’s certainly one of the grandest as well, filled with crystal chandeliers, mosaics, marble, gold leaf, and stained-glass windows. A remnant of the city’s communist history, the building’s original design took a team of approximately 700 architects and was inspired by Socialist Realism, Modernism, and Neoclassical architecture. Though the People’s Palace was ordered by Nicolae Ceaușescu, the last communist leader of Romania, it was not completed until 8 years after his death. The Palace now houses the Romanian Parliament and three museums, including a contemporary art museum and the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism.

Get to know the bustling heart of Romania's capital city with a full day to explore Bucharest on your own.

Check out of your hotel this morning. If your cruise/tour package includes a group departure transfer or if you have purchased a private departure transfer, you will be transferred to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport for your flight home.

Arrive at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. If your cruise/tour package includes a group arrival transfer or if you have purchased a private arrival transfer, you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the hotel.

Bucharest, Transfer to Giurgiu (Embark)

Bucharest is a fascinating combination of Communist grandiosity, elegant French-influenced 19th-century buildings and surprising survivors dating from the 1500s. Today in Bucharest you’ll enjoy a panoramic city tour and a visit to People’s Palace. Later, you'll travel via motorcoach to Giurgiu, where your ship awaits.

Cruising the Iron Gates, Donji Milanovac, Golubac

Today’s main attraction will be the spectacular scenery along the Danube, as you cruise a stretch of gorges known as the Iron Gates. Later, head ashore to explore a Paleolithic site and an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval fortress.

Lepenski Vir is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric archeological sites from the Stone Age, located on the Danube.

Later, you’ll visit Golubac Castle, one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, a powerhouse that has loomed over the Danube for centuries.

Vukovar (Osijek), Batina, Mohács

Welcome to Croatia! This ancient country, which has made a remarkable recovery from a brutal civil war, is noted for its beautiful countryside and thriving folk traditions, as well as simple, delicious local rustic food. You’ll dock in Vukovar, Croatia’s biggest port, at the confluence of the Danube and Vuka rivers.

In the evening, a special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you.

Budapest (Disembark)

Disembark the ship. If your cruise/tour package includes a group departure transfer or if you have purchased a private departure transfer, you will be transferred to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport for your flight home. Or you can extend your stay in beautiful Budapest with our exciting optional post-cruise extension.

Of course it is the longtime hub of the Port wine trade, but Porto is also much more. Take in the UNESCO-designated, 19th-century Stock Exchange Palace, seeing its famous Moorish Revival-style Arab Room, during your panoramic tour. Get a feel for this vibrant town, which is simultaneously profoundly urban and moodily romantic. Colorful multistory townhouses sheathe the hills that climb precipitously from the Douro estuary, medieval alleys snake through UNESCO-designated neighborhoods enclosed by 14th-century walls—which were erected on Roman foundations—and baroque church towers crown the hilltops. The river itself cuts through the city on its way to the ocean, marked by a series of iconic bridges along the way. It meets its final destination at Foz do Douro, a district whose name translates to "Mouth of the Douro." Our tour will take us all the way here, where you can admire the passeio alegre with its promenade inspired by French architecture, see the Castelo do Queijo that juts out over the Atlantic, and drive down Boavista Avenue.

Cross the upper level of the Ponte Dom Luis, Porto's eye-catching bridge, and arrive at the Cathedral "Sé." From there, we'll walk to the Sao Bento Station to see its famous azulejos murals, which portray the city's rich history. After that, head up the hill to Santa Catarina Street, a bustling shopping street full of beautiful cafes, shops and historical landmarks. To fuel our jaunt around Porto, we'll then stop at the Bolhão Market for a taste of an important local treat and one of the city's biggest industries: canned fish. Finally, we'll make our way to the Clérigos Quarter on the way back to the ship through Ribeira.

The Douro Valley is the oldest demarcated wine-growing district in Europe. Why? What makes Port the wine it is? Learn about the region’s unique geology and winemaking history—Romans planted vines in this region 2,000 years ago—at the Douro Museum. Exhibits laid out in buildings that were once home to Port winemaker Real Companhia Velha let you see how the process of making Port evolved over the centuries: You’ll find the tools of the trade and even a rabelo (a boat that carried wine from the vineyards to Porto) on display. An interactive map shows where the quintas are and how the region developed; and by sniffing vials of concentrated fragrance, you can learn to identify the many aromas that a good Port exhibits. It’s fun and informative—plus you can sample some regional Douro wine.

During this experience, you’ll discover the importance of Lamego’s heritage to the valley. This is a very important area for the production of delicious sparkling wines and cold cuts, which you’ll be able to taste in the cozy and regionally typical atmosphere of a place called Presunteca , or the “Ham Library”.

Ready for an expedition worthy of Indiana Jones? Today’s your chance. In the 1990s, scouting for a proposed dam project on the Côa River revealed an astonishing collection of prehistoric carvings, among them horses, deer and aurochs that span eons. The oldest images etched into the schist walls around the river date to approximately 22,000 to 20,000 BC, with younger carvings ranging from the Epipaleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze ages to the 17th century—images that represent human interaction with the natural world for more than 30,000 years. Learn about this amazing area and see the original rock art for yourself when you visit the Côa Valley with your knowledgeable guide. It will be an illuminating adventure. Note: Exploring these sites will require sturdy hiking footwear and considerable physical fitness: You’ll take a four-wheel drive down dirt roads and hike into rocky and hard-to-access locations.

Ride through wonderfully scenic countryside—the region is noted for its honey, which derives its flavor from the fields of wild lavender and the almond groves you’ll pass—to Castelo Rodrigo, the name of both a castle and the village it shelters. The castle ruins stand high atop Marofa Mountain, telling the tale of border strife and Portugal’s struggle for independence in a single structure. Construction on the citadel began in 1209 under the auspices of the king of Leon, but it became part of Portugal within a century—though its local lords sided with Spanish rulers from time to time over the next four centuries. That’s why the palace adjoining the castle lies in ruins: Outraged citizens destroyed it after its lord sided with Castile. Take in the amazing view from the ancient stone walls, then step down through the tiny cobbled lanes of the village, passing the old pillory, the Manueline church, and the town’s market square. It’s not all history, of course. You’ll also get to sample delicious local treats, such as honey, almonds, olive oil and cheeses, and a newly restored tea-house invites you to relax over a cup of tea or a cool drink.

Vega de Terrón (Salamanca), Barca d’Alva

The ornate plateresque façade is stunning, and the interior rooms you see are equally beautiful. You'll have time to browse through the shops on Rua Mayor or enjoy a bite to eat on your own before we drive back to the ship. As you journey through the hills to a local quinta, a prestigious Port wine estate and the oldest in the Douro River Valley, you will see a unique landscape that has been shaped by wine growers for two millennia. The stone terraces curving around the steep slopes hold soil that is largely the creation of human intervention: People have laboriously broken up the native silver schist stone over the centuries and turned it into usable sandy earth; it’s called “anthroposoil.” The process of producing Port wine is a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity; the steepness of the slopes requires that grape vines be tended almost entirely by hand, but the wine itself is made using the most modern techniques. You’ll tour the estate to see its stainless steel and oak vats, Boutique Winery, and the historic wine presses, before proceeding to the terrace for a Port tasting with a view over the river.

“Portugal was born here.” So the sign on the city wall proclaims. Guimarães was home to the first king of Portugal, Afonso I, who managed to win his kingdom’s independence in the 12th century from neighboring suzerains. The wonderfully well-preserved Old Town, with its unique architecture (houses here combine granite with half-timbering) and charming little plazas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; overlooking it is the grand castle that appears on Portugal’s coat of arms. Rove with your guide from the castle toward the beautiful main square, the Largo da Oliveira, and to the splendid Monastery and Church of Our Lady of Oliveira and the 14th-century Gothic Padrão do Salado. But remember that despite these historic beauties, Guimarães has the youngest population of any city in Europe, so the pedestrian area is full of lively and fun cafés and shops.

Why a River Cruise is the best way to cruise

Sailing by river means enjoying all the conveniences of a traditional cruise, along with all the benefits of inland travel. Stopping in multiple destinations on every trip, you’ll visit bustling cities and hidden gem villages, only unpacking once. Even while onboard you’ll be immersed in the local sights, with ever changing views right outside your window. River cruising is absolutely the best way to cruise, and the best and most luxurious river cruise is with Uniworld.

Benefits of River Cruising

passengers and staterooms

Smaller Ships, Fewer Guests

Uniworld ships have an average capacity of just 120 passengers, which means you get to enjoy an intimate onboard atmosphere and unmatched service, with a crew-to-passenger ratio of 1 to 2.4.

location

The Safest Way to Cruise

By nature, sailing on the rivers means constant proximity to land and shoreside resources—and, by extension, the ability to stop the ship and disembark at any time, if necessary.

Truly Immersive

Never restricted to coastal towns and ocean-liner ports, river cruise ships can take you to the heart of your destinations and dock in the center of town, so you can step right off the ship and start exploring.

A Room with a View

Forget about indoor cabins. When river cruising, every room has a view. Relax and enjoy the ever-changing scenery as you sail to your next destination.

boarding

No Lines or Crowds

Unlike on an ocean cruise, you won’t have to deal with wait times for embarking or disembarking. And on tours, our guides can bring you right past the long tourist lines at popular museums and attractions.

River cruise packing list: What to pack when traveling by riverboat

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

You booked your river cruise, and the departure date approaches. Now you’re panicking about what to pack.

You want to pack light, given you won’t have much space in your cabin to store bulky suitcases. However, you also want to be prepared with the right clothing and gear for changeable weather on the river, visits to religious sites and the many walking and cycling tours you plan to do in port. How will you fit everything in a carry-on?

It seems like a lot, but there’s no need to feel overwhelmed about packing for a river cruise. I’ve been on more than 125 cruises, including many river sailings.

Below are my top packing tips and a river cruise packing list for a river cruise in Europe, the United States, Asia or Africa. Follow these tips to take the stress out of your pre-trip prep.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

What to pack on a river cruise

The first thing to understand is that where you cruise will dictate what you pack. The Nile River in July will be quite different than the Rhine in November, and you’ll need different clothing and gear.

However, river cruises are often during warmer times of the year in places that may not see ice and snow. Typically, heavy outwear isn’t needed. (At least not much of it — I was on a Tennessee River cruise in early November, and it snowed for several hours one day!)

Here’s what to pack to get maximum use out of minimal luggage.

Related: Booking your first river cruise? Here’s what you need to know.

Lightweight layers

The key to river cruise packing is layering.

On some rivers in Asia and Africa, such as Egypt’s Nile River, it can get extremely hot during the day — we’re talking 90-plus degrees Fahrenheit — but cool in the evenings.

Late-summer weather in Europe can also change frequently. During a river cruise in the Netherlands in early September, some days were hot and others rainy and chilly. For all these destinations, you’ll want to be able to peel layers off and put them on again.

Layers are also convenient should you need to cover up your shoulders and legs to enter religious buildings like temples, monasteries and cathedrals.

Light scarves are useful for covering shoulders in religious places and covering your head and face when it’s hot or dusty. Colorful scarves can also be a great accent piece for a dinner outfit on board.

For the best layering, think about packing several thin long- and short-sleeved T-shirts, as well as a jacket, such as an outdoorsy zip-up jacket or vest from Patagonia. I often bring a dark denim jacket for layering. It’s warm and looks stylish when worn over T-shirts and accented with scarves.

Casual clothes for day and night

River cruises involve full days of touring on land, so casual and comfortable clothing is key.

Cargo pants or shorts are a great idea on a river cruise, especially for the popular cycling and walking excursions. You can stash your phone, a thin wallet and even sunscreen or bug spray in the large pockets, leaving your hands free to navigate a bicycle or walking sticks.

It may sound counterintuitive, but for very hot places in Southeast Asia, India, Egypt, Amazon region and Europe in August, it’s best to wear long sleeves when touring, even in the hottest summer months. This will protect you from sunburn.

Prepare for various temperatures and pack lightweight breathable fabrics. I prefer thin cotton tops, while my husband likes the moisture-wicking shirts from Arcteryx and similar brands. Both kinds take up little suitcase space and dry quickly when hand-washed.

Some of the newer riverboats from lines like AmaWaterways and Scenic have small pools on deck, so pack a swimsuit if you’d like to take a dip.

Related: Best river cruise lines around the world

When it comes to dining, river cruises are generally casual. You can even have dinner wearing what you wore on the afternoon’s excursions — within reason. I wouldn’t wear cargo shorts to dinner, but I’d wear jeans.

That said, especially on Europe river cruises, most folks like to wear a nicer shirt or top for dinner layered with a nice scarf, vest or a thin easy-to-fold jacket. Passengers on higher-end river cruise lines in Europe (such as Uniworld and AmaWaterways) tend to dress up in the evenings more than guests on more affordable cruises.

No river cruise line will expect you to bring suit jackets or sparkly clothes. However, I’ve seen women in cocktail dresses and men in sport coats on Europe and Mississippi river cruises.

Related: What to wear on a cruise: Cruise attire and cruise line dress codes

Bring a pair of sturdy sneakers or light trekking shoes for excursions that may require long city walks in Europe and the U.S. or hiking on dirt roads or rocky paths in more rural areas in India, Laos, Cambodia and the Amazon. Alpine-style hiking boots are not necessary.

For Southeast Asia and India river cruises, bring a comfortable slip-on shoe, like a pair of Crocs, that are easy to get off and on because you’ll have to remove shoes before going into temples. You’re usually allowed to wear socks, so bring multiple lightweight ankle or no-show socks you can easily wash in your cabin sink when they get dusty from walking on dirt roads.

Ideally, bring a third pair of shoes to wear inside your cabin and around the boat’s interior, such as sandals, boat shoes, flats or whatever casual lightweight shoe you prefer. I never travel without my hot pink Birkenstocks; they’re cute and versatile, without or with socks.

Accessories and travel gear

Clothing isn’t the only thing you’ll need to pack for your river cruise. The No.1 accessory you should pack is a lightweight backpack, fanny pack or sling bag that is easy to carry on walking or biking tours or on more active treks.

Riverboats that offer the use of bicycles should provide helmets, but the options may not always fit the way you like. If you plan on cycling a lot (we cycled daily, sometimes twice a day on a recent AmaWaterways Netherlands and Belgium river cruise), consider bringing your own. The helmet may take up valuable real estate in your luggage, but it’s a must if you’re fussy about what you put on your head.

I like to wear a thin baseball cap under the helmets I borrow from cruise lines. The visor of the cap keeps the sun or rain away from your eyes. Also, if you’re uncomfortable wearing a previously-worn helmet, a ballcap can be a barrier to keep you from touching the hat directly. You can also tie a bandana on your head before putting on the borrowed helmet.

Ask your cruise line if it gifts passengers a reusable aluminum-style water bottle to fill up on board and use during shore excursions. If yours doesn’t, bring your own lightweight refillable water bottle as an eco-friendly practice to cut down on single-use plastic waste.

Related: 20 must-have cruise items — including a roll of duct tape

If river cruising in Southeast Asia, India, South America or Africa, bring a small bag of your preferred medicines because you might not find the brands or names you’re used to in port. Also, bring your pain reliever of choice, and anti-diarrhea medicine, just in case.

Also, carry a small container of insect repellent, for excursions and your room, on cruises in tropical places where mosquitos and other bugs are prevalent.

Since evening entertainment on a river cruise is minimal — typically a bit of music after dinner or nothing at all — consider packing your own evening entertainment.

Bring books, an e-reader or a tablet, but make sure to download books and movies to your device before your trip. Wi-Fi can be weak on riverboats anywhere in the world, so you may not have a signal to read the newspaper in real-time or stream the latest episode of your favorite show.

Tips for river cruise packing

River cruise boat cabins are often on the small side compared to cabins on big cruise ships, so you don’t want to over-pack.

Riverboat cabins are also not as uniform as those on ocean-going ships. European fleets may be more similar, but lines in North America and Asia can have quirky, one-of-a-kind ships. Don’t assume you’ll have as much room on one line as you did on another.

Riverboats may not provide much (or any) space under the beds for bulky suitcases, and closets (if there are any) are compact, so small suitcases or soft duffels are ideal.

There are exceptions, such as the high-end riverboats in Europe from lines like Uniworld and AmaWaterways; larger riverboats like the 417-passenger American Queen on the Mississippi River; and luxury lines like Aqua Expeditions cruising in Asia and the Amazon. These ships offer more storage space in generally larger cabins.

Related: Cruise ship packing mistakes you want to avoid at all costs

Many riverboats also don’t include self-service laundry rooms (though some deluxe Europe riverboats will). Some don’t have laundry service either. If you want to pack light, bring undergarments and layering tops that dry quickly, so you can wash in the bathroom sink and hang them to dry.

River cruise packing list

With all this in mind, here is a suggested packing list for your river cruise vacation:

  • Multiple lightweight tops and T-shirts, including long-sleeved versions for sun protection.
  • Bottoms, such as leggings, lightweight cargo pants, jeans, khakis, slacks and skirts.
  • Evening wear like casual dresses, slacks and nice shirts.
  • Multiple pairs of lightweight underwear and socks.
  • A lightweight cotton scarf or sarong.
  • A lightweight but warm jacket, cardigan and/or thin fleece for chilly mornings or evenings.
  • Sturdy shoes, such as sneakers or simple hiking shoes.
  • A comfortable slip-on shoe for visiting religious sites or for evenings on board.
  • Light backpack or fanny pack for excursions.
  • Water-proof zip-top or small bag for your phone and camera for protection in rainy weather and when aboard small launches used for excursions.
  • Local and U.S. currency in small bills for purchasing drinks, snacks and souvenirs and for tipping local guides.
  • Reading materials (books and e-readers) and/or a tablet.
  • Sunscreen and bug spray.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Lightweight compact umbrella for both rain and sun protection. (Many river cruise lines provide umbrellas, but they’re often the large non-folding kind that aren’t convenient to carry around all day.)
  • Prescriptions and basic medicines.
  • Chargers for your electronics, plus a portable charger to ensure your phone is always juiced up on long excursions.
  • Multi-prong adaptors so you can use both the North American 100- to 120-volt and European 220- to 240-volt outlets on the river cruise boat. (The newest luxury riverboats may have standard USB charging outlets in the lamps on the bedside tables.)

Bottom line

The key to river cruise packing boils down to two important themes.

First, don’t over-pack or bring giant suitcases that won’t fit in your cabin.

Second, dress for success with lots of lightweight layers. Understand the climate and the activities you’ll experience in your river cruise destination, and you have a recipe for the perfect packing job.
