Cycle the Back Roads of Sri Lanka Tour

Cycle the Back Roads of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka - a country filled with friendly, optimistic people, a wonderful unique culture, and so many interesting historic sights that rival the amazing Angkor Wat (among others). Only a few years after the devastating Boxing Day tsunami and the end of the war, I can see that it is getting busier and busier with tourism. GET THERE SOON! Cycling through Sri Lanka was a fantastic way to see the country. As far as possible, the tour sticks to the back roads, so really gets into the heart of the countryside and avoids an overly touristy experience. The bikes provided are great, the hotels of a surprisingly high standard. I LOVED IT! I am not at all a cyclist but am reasonably fit. The cycling was challenging but manageable. Overcoming saddle-soreness was my biggest problem. I didn't ride the big hill day and instead caught to train, that was also a fabulous experience. You may read about Suresh, the tour leader on this tour....words cannot describe just what a fantastic tour leader he is. I've traveled far and wide on many tours. Suresh stands alone in being the most service-orientated, friendly and knowledgeable tour leader I have every met. He really goes out of his way to ensure that every single client is enjoying the trip as much as they can.

Day 1: Arrival in Nuwara Eliya

Your journey kicks off with a 2-hour road trip from the bustling city of Colombo to the adventure haven of Kitulgala.

Now, the real excitement begins as you gear up for some whitewater rafting action on the Kelani River. Stretching 145 kilometers, the Kelani River is the fourth-longest in the country, winding from the Sri Pada Mountain Range to Colombo. After descending from Adam's Peak, the river meanders through scenic hill country before meeting the Indian Ocean.

Your river adventure starts just upstream from charming Kitulgala. The Kelani has some fantastic level 2 rapids, and we'll make sure you've got all the right gear, so you're not just riding waves; you're conquering them. Whether you're a newbie or a pro, certified guides ensure safety is paramount.

After conquering the rapids, it's time for a well-deserved lunch in the charming town of Kitulgala.

As the day rolls on, we'll transfer to Nuwara Eliya, a city nestled in lush greenery, where we'll check into our charming hotel for the next two nights and enjoy a hearty dinner.

Day 2: Exploring Nuwara Eliya

Rise and shine! Your day kicks off with a breakfast before we whisk you away to the enchanting land of Ella.

Ella, a small town nestled in the Sri Lankan hill country, exudes charm and natural beauty. Surrounded by verdant hills and tea plantations, Ella offers a serene and picturesque setting. The highlight of the town is Little Adam's Peak, a popular hiking destination known for its manageable trail and rewarding panoramic views. As you ascend, the landscape unfolds, revealing lush greenery, terraced tea estates, and distant mountain ranges.

We'll stop for lunch at one of the charming street restaurants before we switch gears—quite literally. Say goodbye to hiking boots and hello to bicycle pedals. We're pedaling through a tapestry of natural beauty to our hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

After a day filled with adventure and exploration, you are free to unwind and freshen up, and as the day gracefully transitions into night, we invite you to join us for a delicious dinner.

Day 3: The Train Journey to Kandy

After breakfast this morning, we'll board the iconic Blue Train for a 4-hour ride from the charming hills of Nuwara Eliya to the vibrant city of Kandy.

Nestled amidst Sri Lanka's lush landscapes, Kandy is a cultural gem, boasting rich history and picturesque surroundings. The city is known for its vibrant markets, scenic lakes, and cultural landmarks that paint a vivid picture of Sri Lanka's heritage.

The train journey itself is dubbed one of the most beautiful in the world. As the train winds its way through the island's diverse landscapes, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of emerald-green tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, and charming villages.

Upon arrival in Kandy, your adventure continues after lunch with a cultural walk that includes a visit to the Temple of the Tooth. This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses sacred relics of the Buddha and is a masterpiece of Sri Lankan architecture, adorned with intricate carvings, golden embellishments, and captivating murals depicting Buddhist stories.

As the day comes to an end, you have the freedom to enjoy dinner at your leisure, savoring the flavors of Kandy.

Day 4: Sigiriya Exploration

After breakfast, we take a 1.5-hour journey to Sigiriya, which seamlessly blends history, nature, and community. The town itself offers a glimpse into rural life, with quaint surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can explore local markets, interact with friendly residents, and appreciate the simplicity of daily life.

For lunch, we'll cook our very own traditional Sri Lankan dish, and then our cultural interlude unfolds at the historic Dambulla Cave Temple, a mesmerizing complex that showcases Sri Lanka's ancient art and religious heritage. The cave temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its intricate cave paintings, statues, and stunning architecture.

Following this cultural exploration, our journey continues with a transfer to our deluxe hotel in Sigiriya where we’ll enjoy dinner.

Day 5: Conquer Sigiriya Rock and Cycling Adventure

After breakfast, we'll gear up for a day filled with awe and adventure! We'll ascend the ancient Sigiriya Rock fortress on a 2.5- to 3-hour journey through history and culture. This UNESCO World Heritage Site reveals its breathtaking beauty, treating you to panoramic views that showcase Sri Lanka's landscapes.

After the triumphant climb, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch then switch gears for a peaceful cycling adventure through the lush gardens and countryside surrounding Sigiriya.

Day 6: Sunrise Hike and Coastal Cycle to Kalpitiya

As dawn breaks, get ready for an achievable 30- to 45-minute hike to Pidurangala—a rock formation offering the perfect vantage point for witnessing the awe-inspiring sunrise. From this summit, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, creating a magical and serene start to your day.

Following this breathtaking spectacle, it's time to check out, enjoy a tasty lunch, and transition to our coastal cycling adventure, where we'll pedal through Kalpitiya's coastal landscapes. This oceanside town is renowned for its dolphin-watching opportunities—perhaps, if luck is on our side, we'll catch a glimpse of a playful dolphin or two along the way.

Day 7: Wilpattu National Park Adventure (Melheim Beach Kalpitiya)

After an early breakfast, we’ll get ready for an exciting day of wildlife adventures as we delve into the vast expanse of Wilpattu National Park, which is not only the largest national park in Sri Lanka but also boasts the highest density of leopards in the world. A quick 30-minute transfer brings us to this natural haven, setting the stage for an enthralling 3-hour safari game drive. Keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of not only the elusive leopards but also a myriad of other fascinating creatures, including elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, and an array of bird species.

We’ll stop at a local restaurant for lunch en route back to our beachside haven in Kalpitiya, where you have the afternoon free to explore.

Day 8: Conclusion and return to Colombo

As your unforgettable adventure draws to a close, we'll say goodbye to the coastal charm of Kalpitiya with one last breakfast together. This article is divided into Sri Lanka bike tours that start in different parts of the country. Read a snippet of what to expect from each part of the country, and choose the best Sri Lanka cycling tours for you.

The Sri Lankan countryside shows a whole different side to the country. There is so much greenery everywhere, lots of small local villages and wildlife that you don’t have to pay for a safari to see!

Types Of Cycling Tours in Sri Lanka

There are a variety of tours that show you around on bikes in Sri Lanka. Here are a few examples:

  • Mountain Bike
  • Countryside
  • Tea Plantation

Sometimes, different tour types are combined, so you might find a multi-day tour that takes you through both the city and countryside, with a stop in the tea plantations too. You’ll definitely find something that suits you on this list of Sri Lanka cycling tours!

What To Expect On Your Cycling Tours In Sri Lanka

Even if you’ve been on a cycling tour before, you’re an avid hobby cyclist or this is your first time on a cycling holiday, it’s important to be prepared and to know what to expect.

I read plenty of tour reviews that are complaining about things that the customer should have already known about, and this lack of research and prep hurts the companies as they have to accept a negative review.

Girl taking picture of bike in sunset

For example, if you’re going on one of the a half-day cycling tours in Sri Lanka that does not mention having breakfast provided, eat before you come because otherwise, you’ll probably be exercising on an empty stomach! It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared so that you won’t be disappointed, and the tour company won’t feel like they’ve let somebody down.

Here are the things that you can expect from most cycling tours in Sri Lanka. Not all of the tours will be able to provide all of these things, but this list is a good starting point for things to look out for:

Read More: The Best Things To Do In Ella

You can’t go on a bike tour without a bike! Some places across the world might expect you to bring your own bike if you’re doing a crazy month-long trip somewhere or you’re practising for an event. However, you will easily find that you’ll be able to get bikes in Sri Lanka – you don’t have to travel with your own!

Most companies will provide you with a bottle of water, but I’d suggest also bringing your own because the heat in Sri Lanka will dehydrate you faster than ever when cycling. Try to bring a bag with decent side pockets as well so that you can take as many bottles as you can.

Some companies will even give you a cool fresh king coconut during your trip!

2 coconuts being held in front of palm trees

This is a no-brainer. If you’re on a bicycle tour, then you must expect to be provided with a helmet. Some tours also offer safety glasses and reflective jackets for added safety.

Experienced Guide

You don’t want to be cycling through the wilderness with someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing! The tour companies should provide someone who will give you a safety briefing and introduction to the tour when you arrive at the meeting place.

Back Up Vehicles

This isn’t something that will be offered on all of the cycling tours in Sri Lanka, but it’s an added extra that might help you choose one tour over the other. Everyone’s fitness levels are different, and the weather/humidity also affects everyone differently too. You might find that you thought you could cycle further than you actually could, or you’re finding it more difficult to make it up the hills.

Read More: Take This Incredible Train Journey From Ella To Nuwara Eliya!

On some tours that offer a vehicle, you can talk to your guide and they will phone for someone to come and pick you up, and take you to the destination. This is good for people who are a little worried about the distances the tour covers, but still want to get involved!

White bike with basket amongst flowers in city

Hotel Pick Up/Drop off

Again, this won’t be offered on every one of these cycling tours in Sri Lanka, but only the ones that need it. Sometimes the starting point of the cycling tour is quite remote, or difficult to get to, so the company will arrange for a tuk-tuk or a car to pick you up from your hotel or even the airport in some cases. Usually, you’ll go to an arranged place and meet your guide (and bike!) there, but sometimes it’s just easier for the company to get everyone together first and then start the tour.

Where To Take Cycling Tours In Sri Lanka

There are so many different places to start your Sri Lankan cycling tour, so I thought a map would be helpful to give you an idea of the general area that you’ll be in. The map below shows the town starting point of every cycling tour on this list, which will make it easy for you when booking and organising.

Read More: Here Are The Best Ways To Get From Galle To Mirissa!

You can see that most of the cycling tours in Sri Lanka are based in the central or west of the country, as that’s where most of the tourists tend to visit.

Here is a quick guide to what to expect in the different parts of Sri Lanka!

The north of Sri Lanka is a relatively quiet place in terms of tourism. Since the end of the civil war though, more and more people are visiting this cultural gem. The area is full of national parks, remote islands and important temples. With more similarities to India than the southern parts of Sri Lanka, the northern region is a fascinating place to explore.

Many people head straight to the south coast for ocean activities, but the eastern beaches are some of the best in the country for things like surfing and whale watching! There are a few relatively unknown towns with a chilled-out vibe with great shopping and beautiful shores. The marine life is bustling at Pigeon Island, there are some impressive temples along the east coast and you’ve got easy access to the land national parks too.

The centre of Sri Lanka is home to the gorgeous tea plantations, set in the rolling hills. Sunrise mountain hikes, tea estate tours and waterfall adventures are popular in this part of Sri Lanka. There is a huge British influence here, but the reestablishment and growth of the local culture are interesting to see.

Although the south coast is famous for its beaches, surfing and whales, there is also some incredible history to be discovered, especially towards the southwest where the cycling tours in this list are. Galle Fort sits majestically on the coast, where museums remind you of Sri Lanka’s colonial past, galleries show you the beauty of the country and restaurants feed you the local food. Yala is also a fantastic place to be if you’re also planning on a safari after your cycling tour. Leopard sightings are relatively common here!

There are some wonderful cities along the west coast of Sri Lanka. Colombo isn’t often somewhere that tourists explore a lot – usually, one day is enough – but if you want to know more about the largest city in the country, an insightful cycling tour is the best way to go. Negombo is the town closest to the international airport but it’s so much more than a stopover place! The west coast also has some beautiful and remote beaches to explore, both on land and underwater (in Hikkaduwa you can even snorkel with wild turtles!)

The Best Time To Visit Sri Lanka

The weather and seasons in Sri Lanka can be a bit unpredictable. There are two monsoon seasons that split the island, so try to avoid these if you can.

Generally, the best time to visit the north and east of Sri Lanka is from around April until September. The rain tends to be lower during this time of year.

Read More: How To Spend 7 Awesome Days In Sri Lanka

For a trip to the central parts of Sri Lanka, the best time to go is usually November to February, although we have visited in February twice and had very different experiences – one year it was incredibly foggy and wet, another year it was sunny and dry most of the time!

The south and west coasts are great to visit between October and March. You’ll be most likely to get sunny beach days here at this time of year.

What To Pack For A Sri Lanka Cycling Tour

Here are the essentials we think you’ll need on your cycling tour in Sri Lanka. The following items are specific to the trip, but we’ve added in the basics for your whole trip underneath too!

Osprey Daylite Plus Backpack

Jade has used this backpack throughout the world on our travels and we have both been very impressed with the design. It comfortably holds a 3L water reservoir in the specifically designed pouch and contours very nicely over your back to distribute the weight well. I have always had a full camera bag so Jade usually has to take enough for two people which it can do. It's a very reasonable price for a very good day pack.

GoPro HERO12 Black

The Go Pro Hero 12 takes the world-renowned Go Pro formula and hits even greater heights. The best of these has to be the Emmy award-winning HyperSmooth 6.0 for incredibly stable video during your wildest of travel adventures, and the front-facing screen for easy selfie and video capture! Find out even more by clicking through!

Travel Wallet - RFID Blocking

Anywhere tourists travel to in high numbers will be hotspots for thieves. Having your personal documents, cards, and cash in one of these discreet travel wallets is a very good idea for peace of mind. This one also comes with RFID blocking so people will not be able to scan cards through your clothing.

Akk Womens Walking Shoes

Walking boots are good for some situations but sometimes you don't need heavy, warm, and waterproof shoes to get the job done. These walking shoes by Akk will keep your feet a nice temperature and comfortable for those long days sightseeing and partying in the sun!

Adidas Relaxed Fit Strapback Hat

This relaxed fit, strapback hat from Adidas is a classic that will keep the sun from your eyes and look decent whilst doing it. There's nothing special to see here, just a well made hat that gets the job done.

Beach Cover-Up Kimono

These gorgeous lightweight Kimonos are perfect for when you just get out of the water or you want to go over to the bar for a drink. They are so lightweight that they dry almost immediately in the sun and there are loads of colours and designs available too!

Sun Bum SPF 50 Sunscreen

We all know what sunscreen is and we all know how important it is but why go with Sun Bum? They are cruelty-free and are compliant with the Hawaii 104 Reef Act meaning that you will be helping decrease the amount of damage sunscreens have to the environment that you are swimming in. If that hasn't convinced you then click through to find out even more.

Columbia Lightweight Jacket

Sometimes you just need a lightweight 100% waterproof jacket to keep you completely dry in the heaviest of downpours. This is especially true in hot tropical areas as the temperature is still high during these rainstorms. This lightweight jacket ticks all of these boxes and packs away into its own pocket! How cool is that!

Ranger Ready Picaridin Insect Repellent Spray

Do not let a brilliant experience be ruined by pesky insects biting you all over your body. Insect repellant is not expensive but not having it can affect much more expensive activities. Pick up a bottle of this Picaridin bug spray and enjoy your travel.

WOWSUN Polarized Sunglasses

A decent pair of polarised sunglasses is difficult to get at a decent price, especially if you want them to look good. These from WOWSUN have lots of different styles (male/female) and colours to choose from and they are very affordable. Click through to see all of your options.

Tummy Control Swimsuit

Looking for a stylish, flattering, complimenting swimsuit that shows off all of your best features whilst also being great for swimming and having fun? Then check out all of the incredible styles and colours these tummy control swimsuits come in.

Panasonic LUMIX LX10

Yes! Sri Lanka has some beautiful places to see that you would miss if you only took a train or a car. You can explore more interesting places and avoid the tourist traps on a bicycle tour.

You shouldn’t have to train before your bicycle tour in Sri Lanka, but you should have a decent amount of fitness to be able to keep up with the group. Go for a few trial rides before you arrive!

This depends on the tour and how demanding it is. Some tours allow children from as young as 7 to take part but remember that the tour company needs to keep everyone’s safety in mind so if they don’t have a bike suitable for your child’s age (or height) then they might not be able to join.

The day tours tend to last for around 3-4 hours, but you can also take multi-day trips that last for between 5 and 9 days!

Day 1 : Negombo

On the day of the tour, our guide will meet you at your hotel in the evening at 17:00hrs. We'll use this time to do a bike fit to ensure that your cycling experience is as comfortable as possible. After that, we'll have a relaxing dinner together and go over the briefing for the tour.

Negombo is a vibrant coastal town with a mix of Dutch and Portuguese architecture and a bustling fish market. If you have time, we recommend exploring the town's canals, beaches, and historic sites. You could also take a boat ride to the nearby Muthurajawela Marsh, which is home to a variety of bird species and other wildlife.

Itinerary Image

Day 2 : Dambulla

Today we recommend hitting the road early to avoid the heat. After a short transfer, get ready for the day’s cycling. An easy-paced ride that takes us along the stunning coastal route with stops at fish markets. Later we turn inland and take a shuttle transfer of about 3hrs to Dambulla, famous for the ancient Dambulla cave temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cave temple is one of the largest and best-preserved cave temple complexes in Sri Lanka, and it is renowned for its ancient murals and sculptures.

Apart from the cave temple, Dambulla is also known for its vibrant local market, where you can find fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and other local produce. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with rice paddies, forests, and small villages, making it a great destination for nature lovers and adventurers.

Negombo – Sigiriya.png

Day 3 : Dambulla

Have an early morning breakfast and get ready to take a classic loop around Sigiriya visiting Dambulla cave along the way. We start the exploration in the backdrop of the large Lion Rock after which the town was named. We ride along gravel roads following an old irrigation canal to Dambulla, the 2nd century BC Buddhist cave temple. One has to walk up some distance to see the five caves, which still house many ancient Buddha statues.

Post-lunch, head to the 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya. Sigiriya is a small town named after the huge ‘Lion Rock’. It was here that King Kasyapa decided to forge his roots, build a palace on a high rock and embellish its sides with frescos. The last part of the climb, starting from the ‘lion paw’ is quite steep. The ruins of the palace on the summit are surpassed only by the magnificent aerial view of the surrounding jungle.

Sigiriya-Loop.png

Day 4 : Polonnaruwa

Today we go on a journey to uncover the rich history of Sri Lanka as we ride to Polonnaruwa, an ancient kingdom that dates back to the 12th century. Our journey starts with a picturesque ride through a lush forest, surrounded by vibrant greenery. The terrain is mostly flat, with a few gentle rolling patches that add to the adventure.

Upon arriving at Polonnaruwa, we'll be transported back in time as we explore the remains of this once-thriving city. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa boasts an impressive collection of ancient structures, including the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara, and the Lotus Pond. The city's architectural wonders are renowned for their intricate carvings, beautiful frescoes, and advanced irrigation systems, showcasing the ingenuity of its people.

Later in the evening, we return to the hotel, rejuvenated by the fascinating discoveries of the day. Polonnaruwa is not just a city of historical significance but is also a haven of natural beauty, surrounded by lush forests, lakes, and rivers, providing a perfect destination for those who love adventure and nature. A visit to Polonnaruwa is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed.

Sigiriya-Polonnaruwa.png

Day 5 : Kandy

Start your day in perfect harmony with nature as you wake up to the serene melody of chirping birds. We'll get back on our bikes and set off on an unforgettable ride through a verdant forest, where lush greenery will envelop us in a breathtaking embrace. Along the way, we'll pass by the expansive Minneriya water tank, which will leave us awestruck by its beauty.

Our next destination is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka - Kandy, situated on the picturesque Kandy Plateau, surrounded by rolling hills draped in tea plantations. This city is home to one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. As we enter the temple's hallowed halls, we'll be mesmerized by the intricate architecture and awe-inspiring religious artifacts, including the tooth relic itself, believed to be a sacred relic of the Buddha.

Polonnaruwa-Kandy_2.png

Day 6 : Kandy

Today is a rest day and you can plan your own day. Sitting atop a foothill ringfenced by the verdant mountains, the Ellerton Hotel is the ultimate testament to the impeccable Sri Lankan hospitality offered in perfect harmony with nature.

Birds enthusiasts can spot many birds, both endemic and migratory to be seen at Ellerton. The Crimson-fronted Barbet and the Ceylon red-backed woodpecker to name just two. One can observe these on the property or on walks in the surrounding area. Ellerton is actually a birdwatcher's paradise!

Those who want to spend more time exploring Kandy can go for a leisurely walk through the picturesque streets of Kandy, admiring the colonial-era architecture that still remains. End your day with a traditional Kandyan dance performance, which showcases the city's vibrant culture and history. The performers are adorned in colorful costumes, and the music and dance are spellbinding. You can also indulge in a delicious meal of traditional Kandyan cuisine, which is a unique blend of local spices and flavors.

Itinerary Image

Day 7 : Nuwara Eliya

Today's ride promises to be nothing short of breathtaking as we set out on a journey through Sri Lanka's stunning hill country, with its lush tea plantations and sweeping mountain vistas. The route to our destination, the old British tea valley of Nuwara Eliya, is a challenging one, with gradual climbs and a few steep hills to conquer. However, the awe-inspiring scenery, glistening reservoirs, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic views of the majestic mountain ranges make every pedal stroke worth it.

We'll stop for a delectable lunch at a picturesque spot overlooking a stunning waterfall and panoramic landscape. Here, we can take a moment to soak in the beauty of our surroundings and rejuvenate ourselves for the rest of the journey. After lunch, we'll transfer to Nuwara Eliya, where we'll spend the rest of the day exploring this charming town.

Nuwara Eliya, also known as 'Little England,' is a town that exudes colonial-era charm, with its well-manicured lawns, Victorian-era architecture, and immaculate gardens.

Kandy_Nuwara.png

Day 8 : Ella

Today's ride promises to be the highlight of the tour, offering a breathtaking undulating ride from Nuwara Eliya through a diverse range of landscapes. We will pass through lush grasslands, dense forests, dairy farms, and windmills, and stop at Pattipola railway station, the highest railway station in Sri Lanka, situated 1,897 meters above sea level.

The final stretch of the ride includes a challenging 4km uphill climb, leading to Horton Plains, one of Sri Lanka's most popular national parks. This vast expanse of grasslands and thick forests is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including many endemic bird species. We will explore the park's designated trails on foot, including a hike to World's End, a dramatic scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of the park. The total hike is approximately 8km, and we will also visit Baker's Falls, a stunning waterfall in the park.

If time permits, we will take a downhill ride to Ohiya railway station for lunch, followed by a scenic 90-minute train journey to Ella. Ella is a charming town situated at an elevation of 1,041m, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Please note that as our arrival time at Ohiya railway station is uncertain, we cannot make advance reservations for 1st class tickets on the train. We will need to purchase on-the-spot tickets, which are available only for the 2nd and 3rd class.

nuwara-horton.png

Day 9 : Ella

Today spend the day at leisure. If you're still up for an activity, hike to Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, both easily accessible from Ella. Enjoy panoramic views of lush green hills and valleys, and take in the beauty of the impressive Nine Arch Bridge, a railway viaduct that dates back to the British colonial era.

Itinerary Image

Day 10 : Belihuloya

Today we ride towards Belihuloya, passing through forests, grasslands, and teak plantations. The initial descent can be steep, so we'll proceed with caution. After arriving at the base, continue riding uphill to Belihuloya, known for its lush green landscapes, rolling hills, tea plantations, and scenic beauty.

Itinerary Image

Day 11 : Udawalawe National Park

Today is largely downhill as we ride to Udawalawe. The landscape along the route from Belihuloya to Udawalawe offers a captivating mix of forests and rural villages.

In the afternoon, we'll set out on an exciting safari adventure in Udawalawe National Park. The park is home to hundreds of Sri Lankan elephants, as well as other wild animals such as leopards, deer, and buffalo. With well-planned safaris and knowledgeable guides, you'll have a chance to observe these magnificent creatures up close in their natural habitat.

Along the way, we'll pass through lush banana plantations, providing a refreshing change of scenery from the mountainous terrain of the past few days. Cycling through the countryside will give us an opportunity to soak in the rural lifestyle and connect with the local culture.

As we approach Tangalle, the air becomes warm and humid, with the salty scent of the sea in the distance. After a long day of cycling, there's nothing quite like relaxing on the beach and taking in the beautiful surroundings of Tangalle.

With a tropical climate, Sri Lanka has two cycles of monsoon which bring rain to the west and south-west coastal lines from May to September, and between October and February, it rains in northern regions and east coastline. Although the rains are generally short, with occasional heavy downpours.

Leaving out the monsoon season, the remaining months receive plenty of sunshine and are mostly dry. Temperatures remain fairly consistent year-round, with coastal regions averaging from 25 to 32°C and the mountain regions from 15 to 20°C. Sri Lanka is humid as well with relative humidity ranging between 60% & 90%.

Predominantly, Sri Lanka is almost a year-round cycling destination and our bike tours run around the year.

Most travelers require a visa to visit Sri Lanka. The process for acquiring one is relatively straightforward. For trips to Sri Lanka of up to 30 days, visas, also known as ETAs (Electronic Travel Authorization), can be obtained from the government’s Department of Immigration and Emigration website . The Electronic Travel Authorization System is available online or at the port of entry. Visitors are strongly urged to use the online system to avoid lengthy delays at the port of entry.

we very much enjoyed our tour

Overall with we very much enjoyed our tour and bike ride through Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is an awesome place to visit. We were very happy with the quality and maintance of the bikes. The tour guide was confident and flexible to our needs. The hotels were generaly of a high standard and some exceeding our expectations. Our driver was always very careful and mindful to lock the vechicle so we could safely leave our belongings in the bus.The food was generally delicious and plentiful but perhapes not as much protein (meat) as we are use to while riding. Snacks were always available and bus never far away. The extra activities were fantastic and really added to the trip and experience of Sri Lanka . The Safari was the highlight. Would have loved more time in the highlands exploring the tea plantaions and doing an extra hike !

Latin america, sri lanka heritage by bicycle, about this cycle tour.

Sri Lanka, the 'Teardrop of India', is a collection of ancient and natural delights that will bedazzle visitors as you move from religious to monarchical to colonial sites. Left behind by Buddhism, Hinduism, the British, Dutch, Portuguese, and Indians these influences are seen throughout our trail of historical and cultural sites.

We visit five of Sri Lanka's eight UNESCO World Heritage sites as we cycle through the backroads and absorb a very traditional and grassroots feel of Sri Lanka. Our ride start by rolling into the beautiful old town of Kandy, home to the famed Temple of the Tooth and located on a picturesque lake. We next head into open abundant countryside, riding towards the caves and statues of Dambulla's Golden Temple. The dominating rock fortress of Sigiriya will be in view most of our ride as we cycle towards it.

After a climb to the top we walk through one of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. At Minneriya National Park, we will find plenty of elephants on our jeep safari. The next fascinating stop on this trail of Sri Lanka’s most ancient cities, Polonnaruwa, is an immense former capital created in the 12th century. Hidden in dense jungle for many years, Anuradhapura, our last heritage site is a treat: with palaces, monasteries and monuments and a principal shrine of Buddhism.

Sri Lanka Heritage Tour was an excellent combination of cycling, good sightseeing, great food and good accommodation.

Riding through the beautiful Sri Lankan nature, with our excellent guide and helpers, the excellent hotels and super delicious food, made this trip unforgettable. I will be back :)

The tour was amazing and the staff were so helpful and friendly. The hotels were all top class and the sites we visited and the local food at the lunch stops were great. Just wandering which tour to do next.

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

Our bicycle journey will be on quiet back roads, estate tracks, and gravel paths. We cover 222 km in 5 cycling days, and much, if not most, of the terrain is undulating. When you combine the great variety of cycling with the cultural and natural attractions, there is plenty to delve into and enjoy.

Suitability: This trip is an active tour, which means you can expect to exert yourself on some sections of the ride. Cyclists should be in relatively overall good physical shape with at least a moderate degree of cycling experience. Being physically fit will, of course, be a huge asset, but as the tour is fully supported, the van is always close at hand if needed.

Biking Conditions: The road surfaces are mixed: most days, we ride on reasonably good quality asphalt roads, but there are enough sections on very badly broken or dirt tracks that you will need a mountain bike, preferably one with front shocks. However, there is nothing technical involved on this tour, and anyone, assuming they have a reasonable level of fitness, will be able to join. A support truck is always available to help.

Day 1 Arrive in Sri Lanka

We will meet you at Bandaranayake International Airport upon your flight arrival and transfer you to our nearby hotel in Negombo for a welcome dinner.

Day 2 Negombo - Kandy

We depart in the early morning and transfer from Negombo to fertile Mawanella. Our ride begins amidst coconut and rubber plantations and skirts rice paddy fields and local villages. After a gentle warm-up, it's time to start climbing up to and through the Balana Gap. We then ride down to the Royal Botanical Gardens where we take a break to see some of the more than 4,000 species of plants. It's then a short ride onto the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town of Kandy, one of Sri Lanka's most sacred destinations. Surrounded by mountain ranges and built around a lake, Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth, where a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha has been enshrined since the 4th century AD.

sri lankan biking tour

Day 3 Kandy - Dambulla

After breakfast we have a short transfer to the town of Matale, known for its cultivation of spices. Here we start riding towards Dambulla using a mix of tarmac and red dirt roads. Our scenery will again be dominated by bright fruit orchards, rice paddy fields, and the huge elephant grass that grows wild. Our destination is the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a UNESCO Heritage site. This famous rock temple dates back to the first century BC, and we explore the caves that sheltered King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. Once he regained the throne, he built some of the most magnificent rock temples to be found on the Island. We finish at our hotel where there'll be time for a swim before dinner.

sri lankan biking tour

Day 4 Dambulla - Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa

Our tour pedals out of Dambulla and proceeds to the unique ancient 5th century rock fortress of Sigiriya (Lion Rock). As we ride along the shores of Kandalama Lake, we’ll get excellent views of Sigiriya, another UNESCO World Heritage site. We park our bikes and climb up to the abandoned royal palace, converted to a Buddhist monastery. On our way up, we pass famous frescoes and mirror wall. The views from the top are fantastic and more than worth the effort. Once we have explored Sigiriya thoroughly, we'll have a short transfer to our hotel in Polonnaruwa.

sri lankan biking tour

Day 5 Polonnaruwa - Minneriya National Park - Polonnaruwa

An early morning jeep safari awaits as we head to Minneriya National Park to hopefully find some wild elephants. This morning is the chance to see some signature wildlife of Sri Lanka in an uninhabited wilderness environment. The park is the habitat for wild elephants, buffaloes, boar, spotted deer, sloth bear, sambhur leopards, crocodiles, jackals also varieties of butterflies. Our morning safari ends with a snack, and then it's time to mount the bicycles again. We cycle back to Polonnaruwa on a smooth tree-lined road through a forest reserve. When we reach the Polonnaruwa Tank, a very large man-made lake, we have lunch and relax as we still have a busy afternoon ahead of us. We next explore our fourth UNESCO Heritage site, Polonnaruwa, the 10th century capital and best preserved of Sri Lanka's ancient cities.

sri lankan biking tour

Day 6 Polonnaruwa - Anuradhapura

We start the day with a drive of about 2 hours, so we can ride through the ruins of Anuradhapura, the most celebrated of Sri Lanka’s ancient cities. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. From the 4th century BC, it was the capital of the Sinhalese until the beginning of the 11th century AD. During this period, it remained one of the most stable and durable centres of political power and urban life in South Asia. Considered sacred to Buddhists, we'll see the Bodhi-Tree said to have grown from a branch of the tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment. The riding will be flat and interesting, and you have a cool down in the hotel pool to look forward to after our day of cycling.

sri lankan biking tour

Day 7 Anuradhapura – Colombo

After breakfast, we transfer you to Colombo for your flight onwards or trip extension to Galle.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Included in this tour are well-known makes of mountain bikes

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a mountain bike, preferably with front suspension, in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas.

We recommend that you visit a travel medical doctor and ask about vaccines and /or antimalarial tablets. This is also a good opportunity to discuss important travel health issues including safe food and water, accidents, sun exposure and insect bites as the problems experienced cannot be prevented by vaccinations and other preventive measures need to be taken.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The seasons are slightly complicated by having two monsoons. From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half and the Maha monsoon blows from October to January, bringing rain to the North and East. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Average temperatures for Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions are 27°C while at the higher altitudes like Kandy (500m), the average temperature is 20°C. A gortex rain jacket and a warm jumper for the central highlands are suggested clothing.

The best months to visit Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west coast, and from April to September for historical sites and the east coast. As we are traveling the length of the country it is likely for us to experience rain, however, it will be warm and we will likely continue riding through it.

Accommodation

The hotels listed are our first choice and where we hope you will stay, however, during festivals or other major events there is a chance we will have to substitute another hotel.

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner. Most meals are local and feature rice and curries. Sri Lankan curries come in many varieties of colors and flavors and can be meat- or fish- based dishes, but there are also vegetable and even fruit curries. Many of the spices used have ayurvedic value when used in curries. Meals are a mixture of local and western cuisines, with the local key ingredients being rice, coconut and especially spices, reflecting the island's history as a spice producer and trading center for hundreds of years. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water, some energy-restoring local fruit, and soft drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. Beer is readily available everywhere but is NOT included in the price.

Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for traveling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveler of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra dollars, perhaps US$10 a day for incidentals.

The Sri Lankan currency is the rupee (Rs). There are several money changers in the capital as well as major tourist cities and attractions. They generally don’t charge commission and their rates are pretty good, with unlicensed money changers giving slightly better rates than officially licensed ones. However, ATMs are recommended if you are unsure and afraid of getting ripped off. ATMs have spread to all of the cities and major regional centers of Sri Lanka with Commercial Bank having the largest network of ATMs accepting international Visa, MasterCard, and Cirrus/Maestro cards. Any bank or exchange bureau will change major currencies into cash, including US dollars, euros and pounds sterling. To get the best rates, change rupees back into hard currency before you leave the country.

Intrepid Travel Review: Cycle Sri Lanka

Cyclists at Sigiriya Rock

In March 2023, I joined a guided cycling tour to Sri Lanka with Intrepid Travel. This consisted of 8 strangers and 14 days of exploring the best of what this tiny country has to offer by bike.

This was actually my first-ever group cycling tour. All other bicycle travel I’ve done has always been self-supported, so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. However, I had a fantastic time on this trip and will definitely do another group cycling tour in the future. I’m thinking Vietnam!

This is a complete review of the Cycle Sri Lanka trip by Intrepid Travel , including the itinerary we followed, highlights, and what I thought about the guides, accommodation, food and more.

Intrepid Travel Review: Cycling Sri Lanka Itinerary

Day 1: arrival in negombo.

The first day of any Intrepid tour is a free day for your arrival. You just need to get yourself to the first hotel at some point on that day, in time for the evening welcome meeting.

I, however, did not make it in time for the welcome meeting. My flight with Qatar Airways was delayed by an impressive 30 hours, so I actually arrived in Sri Lanka on day 2 of the tour.

Day 2: Chilaw and Anuradhapura

Due to my flight delay, I sadly arrived at Negombo Airport at midday, and had to take a 3-hour taxi to tonight’s hotel in Anuradhapura to meet my group.

I had arrived in time to join everyone for dinner. I was worried I would feel a little left out since they had spent the day cycling together, but the group were all very welcoming. Stella, Suzanne and Ade from the UK, Nick and Victor from the States, Fiona and Bob from Canada. Our tour guide, Indi, was also great, with an infectious smile and plenty of interesting stories to tell.

Where we stayed: Ceylan Lodge .

Cycling near Negombo

Day 3: Anuradhapura

After breakfast at the hotel, we cycled to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Anuradhapura. This is one of Ceylon’s ancient capitals: a huge area with plenty of temples, ruins and history to explore. We were given a guided bike tour of the ancient city, including visits to the sacred Bodhi Tree, Ruwanweli Maha Seya stupa, Jethawanaramaya temple and the Anuradhapura museum.

The ruins are spread over quite a large area, so using a bike to get around is ideal. Some ruins are located in woodland, while others are clustered together in open spaces. After touring the ancient city, we cycled through scenic countryside to our lunch spot. Our crew had set up a picnic of curry and rice next to a river — simply delicious. From here, we rode back to our hotel, where we enjoyed free time for the rest of the afternoon.

Where we stayed: Ceylan Lodge , same as last night.

Cycling in Anuradhapura

Day 4: Ritigala and Polonnaruwa

We woke up early and cycled about 70km from our hotel in Anuradhapura towards an ancient Buddhist monastery, Ritigala. The cycling was hard work in the Sri Lankan heat, but the scenery was stunning, as we passed rice paddies, reservoirs and jungle.

We had lunch at a countryside kiosk, before transferring the rest of the way to the Ritigala monastery by bus. This monastery dates back to the 1st century BCE and is named after the mountain on which it sits. Indi passionately showed us around the site, explaining what life would have been like for the monks who resided there.

After exploring the monastery, we hopped back onto the bus and transferred to Polonnaruwa. Our hotel was beautiful and had a swimming pool, so we relaxed in the sun on arrival before heading to dinner. We were taken to a real off-the-beaten path restaurant in the countryside, where we were served a buffet-style selection of rice and curries.

Where we stayed: Siyanco Holiday Resort

Cycling in Sri Lanka

Day 5: Polonnaruwa, Minneriya Safari and Dambulla

Today was perhaps the busiest and most action-packed day of the whole trip, but it was also one of my favourite days. Indi told us we had the option of going on a safari to nearby Minneriya National Park after today’s cycling. Everyone in the group said yes, so that was the new plan for the afternoon.

We set off on our bikes towards the ancient site of Polonnaruwa, which is the second oldest of Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms. Polonnaruwa is relatively compact, so we were able to visit quite a few temples and ruins in a short space of time.

After cycling around Polonnaruwa , we rode back to our hotel for some tea and lavariya — a sweet dumpling containing caramelised coconut — before continuing on to the town of Diyabeduma.

At one point, an angry grey langur jumped out at me, snarling and baring its teeth. I thought it would stop as I cycled away, but it began to chase — and it was fast! Luckily, it didn’t take long for it to give up, but it was quite a frightening experience.

Monkey drama aside, our route to Diyabeduma was beautiful. We rode along a scenic lake, through verdant jungle, and past farmland, before sitting down to a delicious lunch and then transferring to Minneriya National Park by bus.

This was my first ever safari, and I was completely surprised by just how many elephants we saw up close. It was wonderful to see these iconic animals in the wild. We then transferred to our hotel in Dambulla for the night.

Where we stayed: Gimanhala Hotel

Cycling in Polonnaruwa

Day 6: Sigiriya Rock and Kandy

This morning, we cycled 15km from our hotel in Dambulla to the ancient rock fortress, Sigiriya. This World Heritage Site is one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka, consisting of palace ruins perched on top of a 200-metre-high rock. The rock itself is a lava plug left over from a long-extinct volcano.

On arrival at Sigiriya, we devoured some well-earned breakfast before hiking up to the top. The steps are quite steep and many people were struggling with vertigo as they climbed, but the reward is worth it, as you’ll be treated to sweeping views across the lush, green jungle.

After descending Sigiriya, we enjoyed a quick tea break before jumping back on our bikes and cycling through the picturesque countryside. We had lunch at a spice garden near Matale, before travelling the final kilometres to Kandy in the bus.

In the evening, we visited the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This ornate temple is the most important religious site in Sri Lanka, as it houses a tooth from Buddha himself.

Day 7: Kandy

Today was a dedicated rest day from the bikes, although there was the option to go for a ride in the mountains if you wanted. One member of my group opted to do this and said it was a fantastic day of cycling.

The rest of us spent the day exploring Kandy . We visited the Ceylon Tea Museum and the Royal Botanical Garden, walked around the lake, and also watched a traditional Kandyan dance. For lunch, we visited the Hela Bojun Hala Restaurant, a social enterprise founded by the government to provide employment to women from local communities — we tasted a range of Sri Lankan dishes, including egg rolls, roti and lavariya.

Day 8: Hatton

The railway from Kandy to Ella is rather famous, as it’s considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. It passes lush tea plantations, rolling mountains, viaducts, valleys, and dense jungles. So, rather than beginning the day on the bikes, we drove to Kandy Railway Station, where we boarded the train to Hatton. The three-hour journey flew by as we watched the gorgeous scenery unfold.

After our train ride, we cycled about 40km from Hatton Station to Maskeliya. Now that we were truly in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, the scenery was spectacular. The hills were rolling and verdant, sprinkled with leafy tea plantations and peaceful villages.

We spent the rest of the afternoon cycling Hatton’s gorgeous tea plantations, before arriving at our hotel for the night.

Day 9: Tissamaharama

Somehow, the scenery today was even more incredible than yesterday. We followed what’s said to be one of the most beautiful stretches of road in Sri Lanka, cycling along tea plantations and lush pine forests. We did a lot of climbing today, going higher and higher into the mountains, but the reward was worth it. The scenery became more impressive the more we climbed.

We had lunch in the town Balangoda, and then transferred to Tissamaharama, where we were to be spending the next two nights. Tissamaharama is a launching pad for safaris in Yala, Sri Lanka’s most famous national park.

Day 10: Yala National Park

We spent the morning cycling through the beautiful countryside around Tissamaharama. We stopped often to admire the scenery, as the landscape was rich with wildlife. We saw plenty of birds such as painted storks, bee-eaters and spoonbills, as well as flying foxes, water buffalo and more. I suppose this is the nature of being so close to the borders of Yala National Park.

We pedalled our way to Kataragama, a pilgrimage town sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. We explored a colourful temple complex there, before heading back to our hotel for some lunch. Then, it was time to head to Yala National Park for our safari — an experience I was most looking forward to.

Yala is thought to have the highest density of leopards in the world, with an estimated 100 – 125 individuals residing in the park. While we sadly didn’t see a leopard, we did see a very impressive range of wildlife, including elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, wild boar and more.

Day 11: Mirissa

Today was sadly our last day of cycling. We rode from Tissamaharama to Hambantota via Bundala National Park, finishing the ride at a beach with some cold drinks and a commemorative photo.

After a spicy lunch at a local restaurant, we said goodbye to our cycling crew, Kasun and Vish, before heading to Mirissa by bus. We stopped at an impressive temple and a scenic beach along the way, before checking into our clifftops cabins at Mirissa.

We headed down to the beach to grab some dinner; a long curve of sand with blue but rough waters. As we were walking towards the restaurant, we spotted a waterspout far out at sea. I had never seen one before and was completely mesmerised — a huge vortex of wind, not unlike a tornado.

Day 12: Mirissa and Galle

Today was all about relaxation after an amazing time cycling in Sri Lanka. I had a lazy morning enjoying an omelette, fruit and coffee, before heading down to Mirissa beach. Myself and Victor went for a walk to Parrot Rock, a rocky outcrop at the far end of the beach which offered nice views across the ocean. Then, we headed to a Beach Club to enjoy some iced coffees, fresh coconuts and the glorious sunshine.

Later in the afternoon, we were driven to Galle, a World Heritage-listed Dutch fort with extensive walls, ramparts and ruins. We explored the historic fort, enjoyed dinner at a restaurant converted from an old Dutch hospital, and then drove back to Mirissa for the night.

Day 13: Colombo

Before I knew it, it was the last full day of the tour. We began the three-hour drive to Colombo soon after breakfast. On arrival, we visited Independence Square and went on a short city walk through the chaotic Petta Bazaar. The highlight for me was the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, a striking candy-cane-coloured mosque.

We then had plenty of free time to explore the city before our final dinner together. Myself, Victor and Stella opted to go for a walk around the lake in the city centre. This was quite a strange experience. The lake obviously used to be a bustling recreational area, as there were lots of decaying benches, vending machines and remnants of old shops along the lake. Clearly, something — perhaps Covid? — has caused the lake to be abandoned, as the walking paths along it were quite overgrown and eerie.

Where we stayed: Fairway Colombo

Day 14: Departure from Colombo

The final day of any Intrepid tour is departure day, where you are free to leave at any time. Most of us had early flights, while others were staying in Colombo for another day or two. My flight was at 10:30 am, so I got up early and hopped in a taxi to make my way back to London.

Intrepid review: The guides

The crew for the duration of the trip consisted of four people:

  • Our tour guide, Indi
  • Our cycling guide, Kasun
  • Our support vehicle driver, Vish
  • Our bus driver, Sampath

Each of them was incredibly helpful, kind and knowledgeable. I’ve had a handful of really poor tour guides in my time, as well as plenty of excellent ones. Indi was genuinely the best tour guide I’ve ever experienced.

Our support vehicle driver, Vish, would follow behind in a small truck as we cycled. He would ensure our water bottles were always full and would hand out biscuits and bananas during breaks. It was great to know that the support truck was always there if the heat got too much.

Intrepid review: The cycling and other activities

The cycling each day was varied. Some days we cycled around historic sites such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, other days we pedalled alongside lush green farmland or scenic lakes. We also rode through tiny villages, which felt like we were really getting to see some off-the-beaten-track places.

Regardless of whether we were visiting historical sites or the countryside, the cycling was always beautiful and the route well-designed.

The cycling distances on the trip were relatively short, but given the heat and humidity, it would have been very tough to cycle far into the afternoon. I personally struggled a lot with the heat. We would typically set off on our bikes very early in the morning and cycle up until about lunchtime. After lunch, we would transfer to our hotel via an air-conditioned bus.

On arrival at each hotel, we would either enjoy some downtime before dinner, explore the nearby town, or do some non-cycling activities such as visiting a temple or going on a safari. For me, the balance between cycling and non-cycling activities was perfect.

Intrepid review: The food

Sri Lankan food involves lots of curry and rice. We must have eaten curry and rice every day! However, the curries were delicious, so this isn’t a complaint at all. As a vegetarian, it meant I had plenty of excellent food choices: dal, plantain, pumpkin or okra curries were usually available.

Breakfast was always included as part of our hotel stay: we would typically have bread, eggs, fruit, pancakes, tea and coffee available each morning.

Lunch was always a highlight: we would usually cycle to our lunch spot, which was often in the home of a kind local or at a scenic picnic spot in the countryside. I was very impressed with the quality, quantity and setting of our lunches. It was always the best meal of the day.

Intrepid review: The accommodation

The hotels we stayed in were generally clean and comfortable. I occasionally had a gecko or frog in my bathroom, but this isn’t something that bothered me — this is often the nature of travel in tropical countries. Each hotel we stayed at had a decent breakfast included, and most had a swimming pool and WiFi. I was actually expecting mediocre accommodation, as this holiday focuses on being active rather than luxury, so I was more than satisfied with the hotels we stayed in.

Intrepid review: The transport

As this is a cycling tour, a lot of our transport was — obviously — via bike. That being said, the cycling distances on this trip are relatively short. We would cycle up until about 2 pm at the latest, and then travel to our hotel in our private, air-conditioned bus. Our bikes would be loaded into the support vehicle and driven to the hotel as well, ready for the following day.

The bus didn’t have a toilet, but we made regular bathroom stops. The longest bus ride was about 3 hours, and I would pass the time by chatting with my group or listening to music. We would also make semi-frequent pitstops to temples or scenic viewpoints, which helped break up the bus journeys. Our bus driver, Sampath, always kept the bus clean and tidy.

Intrepid review: Sustainability and responsibility

I care a lot about responsible travel and only book with operators that support my views on this. Intrepid Travel is well-known for its stance on responsible travel. For example, they work to maximise the benefits created by tourism by employing local staff; they strive to travel in ways that are as environmentally friendly as possible; they minimise the use of resources; they protect wildlife, and they support local communities.

Intrepid’s views on responsible travel were reflected throughout the tour. Indi spoke to us about the perils of elephant tourism , and how turtle hatcheries are not always what they seem. He was also very open about issues within the country. We used local guides often, such as when we went to the Ceylon Tea Museum, and we ate in local restaurants or homes within a community.

Intrepid review: My verdict

All in all, I thought Intrepid’s Cycling Sri Lanka tour was excellent. It was very well planned and organised, with no hiccups at all. The cycling was beautiful, the non-cycling activities were great, and there was just the right amount of downtime. This, coupled with a lovely group of fellow travellers and exceptional guides, made this one of the most enjoyable group tours I’ve ever been on.
