Frequently Asked Questions about Mauritius tourism

Q) How many days are sufficient for Mauritius?

A: 6 or 7 days is the ideal duration for Mauritius holiday packages. This will give you enough time to relax and also cover the important things to do without being rushed.

Q) Which is the best area to stay in Mauritius?

A: All areas of Mauritius are good to stay in as it is an island. If you are looking to party more, you could consider staying close to Flic en Flac.

Q) Is there a rainy season in Mauritius?

A: Mauritius is a tropical island destination with two primary seasons, summer and winter. Summer months last from January to April, while winter lasts from May to December. There is no distinct rainy season or monsoon season in Mauritius. While the mountains can receive rain at any time of the year, the rest of Mauritius Island sees rain in patches, mostly during January and February.

Q) Which is better for honeymoon – Maldives or Mauritius?

A: Both Maldives and Mauritius are great honeymoon destinations, but are different from each other. Maldives is about isolated beach resorts offering a very private stay – one island, one resort. If you are a traveler with mobility difficulties, you can avail transport for special needs via advance booking. While Air Mauritius is identified as the national carrier via domestic and international routes, some of the airlines flying from India to Mauritius are Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways and South African Airways. You can also catch a connecting flight from many of India’s cities via Air Seychelles and Emirates. Le Mourne Brabant

Troudd’argent, maison eureka, black river gorges national park, national history museum, port louis , grand baie .

For those who delve into the depths of intriguing history, this place is a must-visit. Le Mourne Brabant marks the peninsular area of southwest Mauritius which makes for a spectacular mountainous landscape. However, it is more famous for being a refuge shelter for the runaway slaves from nearby places including the African mainland, south-east Asia, and Madagascar. The hilly terrain that holds several caves helped them to conceal themselves from their masters and stay protected. Serving as an impregnable fortress and a refuge against slavery, it attained the symbolism of resistance against social evil. It was declared as a World Heritage Site, Mauritius’s first-ever, by UNESCO in 2008. Explore the historical side of Mauritius to your heart’s content with the well-planned Mauritius tour packages available on our page.

One of the most wondrous places to visit in Mauritius, Troud’Argent is a beach on Rodrigues Island. Extremely beautiful, with pure white sands and blue waters, the site finds its place at the top of the list of most popular tourist spots in the country. Equally loved by both tourists and the locals, the beach promises the most memorable and relaxed day out at sea. With the tropical sun shining bright and reflecting off the splashing waters at the shore, it is indeed a bliss to be lazing around on a chaise longue and sipping rum coco. You can find this beach as a standard inclusion in several Mauritius tour packages.

If Mauritian history dating to its colonial era is what you seek, then do not miss out on Maison Eureka. The perfectly conserved Creole mansion that was built in the 1830s is indeed a sight to behold. Today it has been transmuted into a museum that takes you gliding back into the island's spirited bygone days of a plantation. The architecture of the house is another aspect to marvel at with its superior, tropical ideal construction that is still effective in keeping the interiors pleasantly cool. The incalculable number of rooms, 109 doors and antique furniture that’s beautifully preserved even to this day are incredible to witness. Moreover, the numerous ancient maps, and a mildewed piano along with carefully manicured grounds and stone servant cottages just add to the list of the house’s impressive features. Visit Maison Eureka and various popular tourist sites on this island nation by going with the Mauritius tour packages offered on our website.

Of the many beautiful and ardent natural environs of the rugged Mauritian mountains, Black River Gorges National Park deserves a special mention. One of the many magnificent attractions in Mauritius, the park is filled with lovely rainforests that boast of many quaint hiking trails and picnic spots. It displays a wide array of both flora and fauna, with many rare species too such as the Mauritian flying fox that draws in huge crowds of tourists from the world over. Serving as the most important wildlife and rainforest conservatory of the country, it is the home to many endemic birds and animals. The park is not only an essential ecological system but is also a celebrated tourist destination of Mauritius which is heavily frequented by avid hikers. The 60 km long hiking trail winds along the forest area to end at delightful picnic spots. If you find the Black River Gorges National Park interesting, make sure to opt for Mauritius packages that include a visit to this site.

The roots of any place can be explored through its museums, and the Natural History Museum does the same for Mauritius. It showcases a collection of some veritably fascinating artifacts which includes many ancient maps of the island and amusing paintings of the original fauna of the county- including that of a dodo. Along with these, you can also spot here the preserved bones of certain extinct birds, a curio of an engraving depicting some Dutchmen riding the back of an enormous tortoise and some salvaged objects- cannons, wine bottles etc. dating back to the Battle of Vieux Grand Port from 1810. Get to learn about this island nation’s diverse history during a fun vacation with our Mauritius travel packages.

Although famous among tourists as a great shopping destination in Mauritius , the capital city of Port Louis is also a trove amassing several cultural attractions in Mauritius. Located here is The Blue Penny Museum which is the home to the first ever colonial stamp across the globe. Also, The Natural History Museum in the city lets you get a glimpse of the preserved skeleton of the extinct dodo bird. Port Louis is also the place to get a taste of the multi-culture and faiths of Mauritius through a visit to its many Indian or Chinese temples, churches and mosques. You can also experience life here by going for a leisurely afternoon stroll with the residents or expats of the area. Take a walk uphill from the Signal Mountain which derived its name from the antenna located at the summit, to witness the beauty of the city below during sunset. You can find Port Louis as the starting point in many planned Mauritius packages.

Until about 20 years ago, Grand Baie, a quiet fishing village of Mauritius, is now a bustling tourist spot of the country. This lovely sheltered bay that is also given the sobriquet of ‘Le Trop,' appears happily bobbing up and down with the many big and small boats in its clear waters. The village has emerged as one of the most prominent tourism hubs of the nation and is famous for the many entertainment options and hot shopping districts, along with several unusual sightseeing spots, beaches, and excursions in the nearby areas and a kid friendly ‘Aquarium’ where you can enjoy feeding the fish. You won’t have any issue finding Mauritius packages that include a visit to Grand Baie.

Apart from letting you enjoy rum tasting, the interactive museum of L’Aventure du Sucre located here will also allow you to learn the history of the island. Also, found only 275 m away from the institution, are the Pamplemousses Botanic Gardens which make for another refreshing visit. The garden which was built in the 18th century is famous for an enormous pond of Amazon lilies that are extraordinary to view.

The food in Mauritius is very similar to Indian food. With foods like biriyani, achaar and falooda in common with Indian cuisine. Here’s some Mauritian foods you must try on your Mauritius trip.

Mauritian Biryani

Bolrenverse.

Like Indian achaar, Achard is a tangy, sweet, spicy mix of vegetables that can be eaten with bread, biriyani or rotis.

The Indian faloodas Mauritian cousin, this is a thick, sweet concoction of sweetened milk, ice cream fruits and nuts that is a must try on your Mauritian holiday.

DholPuri is a street food in which thin wheat bread or roti is stuffed with ground split peas. It is served with curries, pickles and chutney. It is sold all over the island, and you cannot afford to miss this dish on your Mauritius holiday as it is a taste of home in a foreign land.

Mauritian biryani is very similar to Hyderabadi Biryani made with fragrant Basmati rice and meat. Potatoes placed at the bottom to prevent the rice from burning or sticking to the vessel and mingle with the rice to form a crunchy crust called socarrat which is a little-known culinary gem you’ll want to explore on your Mauritius holiday. You just can’t miss trying out Mauritian Biryani during your Mauritius tours and travels.

The cousin of the Indian paratha, these flatbreads are eaten all over the island. They are also called Roti Chaud, which means ‘hot roti’ in French. These are served with curries, stews and chutneys and will make you feel at home on your trip to Mauritius.

Literally meaning ‘Upside down bowl’ this is a biryani consisting of three layers: an omelet, chicken or seafood stir-fried with vegetables and sauces and finally stir fried or steamed rice. While preparing the dish, the omelet is first placed in the bowl, followed by the meat or fish and vegetables and lastly, cooked rice. While serving it is turned upside down, which gives it its name.

Things to Do in Mauritius

Pick your own tea, splash about with some watersports, climb signal mountain, play with lion cubs at casella park, ride into the sunset at riambel beach.

Sometimes you want to take a morning stroll and it is best to be a part of the tea plantations. The natural beauty of the place which comes along with tea plantations makes the place a must visit to Bois Cheri Tea plantation. Celebrate your early mornings by taking a small walk through the plantations and enjoying the virgin beauty of nature on your dream Mauritius vacation. You may find some popular Mauritius travel packages that include a short visit to these tea plantations.

Belle Mare in Mauritius is where you can partake in a variety of watersports from scuba diving to snorkeling and kite surfing. This is sure to get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping on your tour of Mauritius.

So, named because of the signal antennae at its summit, reaching the top of Signal mountain will give you a magnificent view of Port-Louis on one side and of the western coastline of the island on the other. Many people like to take up this hike during their Mauritius tours and travel as it leaves them with a sense of wonder and amazement.

Casella Park is a huge outdoor amusement park with safari tours, camel rides & zip-lining. It is in Cascavella. Here you can feel the thrill and majesty of getting up close and personal with the king of the jungle under the watchful eyes of the guides and trainers. You can also cuddle a lion cub or two making this experience the highlight of your Mauritius vacation.

Riambel beach embodies the spirit of everything tropical. There’s the sun, the sand and the sea, all coexisting in perfect harmony. A perfect way to wind down your Mauritius holiday is to splash about in the water during the day and as the sun begins to set, you can rent a horse to take a leisurely languid ride down the beach into the sunset capping off a wonderful Mauritian holiday.

One of the main highlights of tourism in this island country off the Southeastern coast of Africa is its mesmerising beaches. Here are some of the best beaches in Mauritius that you can consider visiting during your Mauritius tours and travels;

Flic en Flac

The quaint little beach town of Flic en Flac is one of the most sought-after tourist landmarks in Mauritius. The Flic en Flac beach, often found in the itinerary of most popular Mauritius tour packages, is located on the country’s west coast and is the main highlight of this seaside village. Stretching a total length of around 8 kilometres, this beach is known for its remarkable scenic beauty. This stretch of sand is bordered by casuarina trees on one side and cerulean water on the other, along with a subtle backdrop of rocky mountains. Besides the long line of beachfront hotels, bars, restaurants, etc., Flic en Flac Beach also offers opportunities for swimming, scuba diving, sunset watching, etc.

Mont Choisy Beach

If you are looking for an exotic holiday, try to go for Mauritius tour packages that feature a visit to Mont Choisy Beach. Located on the northern end of this island country, just 5 kilometres from Grand Baie, it is a secluded beach you can check out if you want to spend some time in tranquillity. This non-crowded, 3-kilometre-long, white sand beach gives tourists an ideal opportunity to witness the beautiful regional marine life. However, note that there isn’t much scope for fun or adventure activities at Mont Choisy Beach due to the absence of proper nearby accommodations.

Pereybere Beach

Located a bit north of Grand Baie, Pereybere Beach is among the most popular tourist attractions in Mauritius. It is a small beach stretching a length of just 150 metres, known for being one of the best family-friendly, safe-to-swim beaches in the region. It remains crowded throughout the year, so the best time to visit Pereybere Beach is during the early morning or late afternoon. Some of the best things to do at this beach are kayaking, parasailing, windsurfing, deep-sea fishing, etc. Enjoy a memorable beachside vacation with your family and loved ones with the Mauritius tour packages offered by Thomas Cook.

Belle Mare Beach

Belle Mare Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Mauritius, roughly 45 kilometres to the east of Port Louis. It is surrounded by a shallow lagoon with coral reefs separating it from the bay, resulting in serene waves. Hence, this beach is perfect for family visits if you intend to spend time swimming in the shallow water. The beach also offers a number of activities, such as glass-bottom boating, snorkelling, paddleboarding, etc. So, make sure to go for Mauritius tour packages that include a visit to this beautiful beach.

La Cuvette Beach

The main point of attraction that draws tons of tourists to La Cuvette Beach in Mauritius is its unspoiled beauty. The serene environment matched with the calm blue waves, white sand and dense greenery, creates a majestic setting perfect for couples. Tourists love to visit this beach for swimming, fishing, windsurfing, volleyball, boating, etc., which is why it is a common inclusion in many Mauritius packages. Also, during your visit to La Cuvette Beach, grab a bite from the local eateries if you feel hungry.

Mauritius currency

The currency utilised in Mauritius is known as the Mauritian Rupee, denoted by the currency code "MUR" and symbolised by "Re" (singular) and "Rs" (plural). One Mauritian Rupee is divisible into 100 cents. Even though it has a different value, the currency term “rupee” can also be seen to be used in countries like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, etc. At the moment, the denominations available in banknotes include 25 Rupees, 50 Rupees, 100 Rupees, 200 Rupees, 500 Rupees, 1000 Rupees and 2000 Rupees. In terms of coins, the denominations available are 5 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 Rupee, 5 Rupees, 10 Rupees and 20 Rupees. Individuals will need this currency for making payments in this island nation during their Mauritius tours and travels. It is because the country doesn’t accept other foreign currencies as legal tender. It is recommended to carry sufficient Mauritian Rupees on your trip by opting for currency exchange. You can do so in your home country prior to the trip or after landing in Mauritius. As of now, 1 Mauritian Rupee is equivalent to  1.85 Indian Rupee.

You can easily acquire foreign currency for your Mauritius trip by opting for the foreign exchange services offered by Thomas Cook. To do so, visit the website, provide the necessary details (including check rate, currency type, forex amount, etc.) and submit your communication details to get a quotation. After that, simply provide the additional information, complete online payment, choose a mode of delivery, and you will have your forex in no time.

Mauritius visas for Indians

Indian tourists planning on visiting Mauritius will need to have a valid visa in order to enter the country. However, the good news is that Indian nationals are eligible for the Mauritius Visa on Arrival facility at the Mauritius International Airport, which means they are not required to apply for a visa in advance. After arriving at the airport, they can obtain their VOA by simply providing the necessary travel documents at the airport immigration counter. The Mauritius VOA is a single-entry visa that is issued free of cost and is valid for up to 60 days. For other visa-related requirements, tourists can check out the online visa services offered by Thomas Cook.

Tips for Travelers

Mauritius is a pretty place but it is important to carry an emergency kit with yourself which includes your personal identification, first-aid products, debit card, etc. Always carry some extra cash because the adventure sports can be a little expensive than you may have expected. Moreover, tourists must also make note that allocation from one island to another can be exclusive as the only means of conveyance is via a speedboat.

While booking your Mauritius tour packages from Mumbai from Travel Triangle make sure that you have picked the right location to stay where all the necessary amenities can be easily available. Carry a sunscreen lotion in order to protect your skin from getting tanned. Carry your sunglasses and binoculars for beach watching. Also, ensure to pack a camera so that you can capture all your recollections with your friends and family members on this beautiful location.

mauritius tour from mumbai

By Saumya Roy Photographs by Atul Loke

Saumya Roy, a Mumbai-based author, has written a book about the city’s wealth, poverty and the waste pickers who make their living in its landfill.

Mumbai appears as much a dream as a city. Sprinkled with the stardust of Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry that bases itself here, and studded with billionaires , India’s hyperkinetic metropolis, known as Bombay until 1995, feels like a place where anything is possible. But over the years, the city’s reality has been one of crumbling infrastructure, unmoving traffic and unending slums. Amid tight pandemic lockdowns, Mumbai turned into one of the world’s great construction sites , trying to remake itself with new towers, subway lines and bridges . Take in the dizzying juxtapositions — while discovering experimental performances in former textile mills and serene, ancient caves a short drive from the urban chaos — in a city guaranteed to look different again the next time you visit.

Recommendations

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya , a sprawling and immaculately kept museum, houses a trove of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist sculptures.
  • The Bombay Poetry Crawl offers a walking tour through one of Mumbai’s most rapidly gentrifying areas and traces the city’s working-class roots through poetry.
  • The Kanheri Caves are an ancient Buddhist complex of more than 100 caves, some dating back as far as 2,000 years, in Sanjay Gandhi National Park . Some of the caves have pillared prayer halls and serene, carved Buddhist deities.
  • G5A , an arts center housed in part of a former textile mill, hosts music, film screenings, poetry readings and performances.
  • The Afghan Church , formally known as the Church of St. John the Evangelist, is a newly restored 19th-century house of worship that serves as a poignant memorial for fallen Indian and British soldiers.
  • Mani Bhavan , the former home of Mohandas K. Gandhi, is now a museum that preserves details of his spartan life, underscoring his emphasis on self-reliance.
  • Moghal Masjid , a Shiite mosque built in 1860, is known for its intricate blue tile work.
  • Hasnabad Dargah , known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to that celebrated monument, is a milky-white mausoleum that evokes calm in the middle of the city.
  • Magen David Synagogue is a large historic temple, painted sky blue, in the Byculla neighborhood.
  • Stroll by murals of Bollywood stars in Bandra , a coastal neighborhood of old Portuguese bungalows and celebrity homes.
  • Masque is a high-end restaurant that reinvents traditional Indian dishes in modern, surprising ways over a nine-course tasting menu.
  • Kala Ghoda Cafe serves healthy breakfasts, including spicy egg dishes.
  • Swati Snacks , a Mumbai institution, offers street-food classics and traditional favorites in a bright, clean setting.
  • Aaswad Upahar and Mithai Griha is a popular, no-frills restaurant in the Dadar neighborhood that offers a mango-themed thali (a platter filled with various small dishes) in April and May, when the fruit is in season.
  • Bastian at the Top , a sceney rooftop restaurant with lavish décor that includes an indoor swimming pool, is worth a stop to take in the views of the bay over a drink.
  • Moonray , a newly opened women’s wear store, brings together immaculate European cuts and handmade embroidery from Mumbai.
  • Payal Khandwala sells silk tops, sharply cut suits and trench coats in bold-colored Indian fabric.
  • Ogaan showcases a range of local designers whose garments include ornate Indian wedding wear and silk shirts.
  • Kitab Khana has a large and well-curated selection of books on Indian literature, politics and Gandhian thought, set in a building that is more than a century old.
  • Induri Saree Centre sells glittering, traditional saris in a candy-box-size store.
  • The Taj Mahal Palace , an ornate hotel open since 1903, looks over the Arabian Sea and the historic Gateway of India arch. A memorial in the lobby commemorates the terror attack at the hotel in 2008. Rooms start at 23,550 rupees, or about $282.
  • Sea Green Hotel , on the curved, lit-up shoreline called the Queen’s Necklace, has basic rooms with gorgeous bay views. Rooms start at around 9,000 rupees.
  • The Grand Hotel is a century-old establishment in the city’s historic Ballard Estate district, an area that is also home to one of Mumbai’s best-known Parsi restaurants, Britannia & Co. You can also walk to many of the city’s well-known attractions. Rooms start at around 6,850 rupees.
  • Traveling in Mumbai’s packed trains is fast, efficient and an experience like no other. Millions travel on the local trains every year, and vendors and singers walk through compartments (25 rupees for a first-class single ticket). Black-and-yellow cabs , which use meters with fixed rates, and ride-hailing apps like Uber are readily available. Mumbai’s red buses also offer a breezy, scenic and cheap way to get around the city (from 5 rupees per trip).

People stand in a semi-circle on a leafy street reading from a stapled paper booklet.

See spindly chimneys rising amid luxury hotels and condos in the jagged skyline of Lower Parel, a rapidly gentrifying precinct in central Mumbai. The chimneys are relics of the area’s former textile mills, which began slowly being redeveloped into malls after a worker strike in the 1980s. Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots here with the writer Saranya Subramanian, who leads the Bombay Poetry Crawl (600 rupees, or about $7), a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history. During the tour, Ms. Subramanian reads poetry by workers and encourages participants to read, too. She leads the tour monthly and also hosts a range of other poetry walks in the city, including one on a local train. Check her Instagram page, @thebombaypoetrycrawl , for scheduling.

A person with long hair performs to a small crowd using a microphone and a laptop. A spotlight shines on the performer, and the crowd is washed in a red light.

Take a car to the nearby G5A , a cultural center housed in a repurposed textile mill compound. Trees grow out of the stone walls of a neighboring former mill , and skyscrapers rise, seemingly by the minute, on the other side. Catch a show at G5A, which hosts edgy art performances, movie screenings and discussions in its small theater, or on its terrace, with the moon glowing through the Mumbai haze. Recent shows include a poetry reading by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Forrest Gander, along with the celebrated Indian poet Arvind Krishna Mehrotra; Norwegian and Bangalorean jazz bands; and a Kashmiri film. Tickets from 250 to 700 rupees.

A close-up of a person pouring a liquid from a stone vessel into a crunchy, puffed snack with a hole in the center.

Walk next door, still within the mill compound, to the high-ceilinged and warmly lit Masque , a restaurant that reinvents traditional Indian dishes across a nine-course tasting menu (5,200 rupees per person). It takes puran poli and amti, for instance, a sweet, lentil-filled flatbread and side of spicy coconut dal that is often eaten during Mumbai festivals, and remixes it as a bite-size chickpea tart with a hint of jaggery (Indian raw sugar), filled with green peas or crab and topped with coconut foam. Pav, a ubiquitous Mumbai bread bun with a crackly top and slightly sweet, dense interior, acquires a croissant-like, buttery texture here — dip it into a silky morel or lamb curry. Cap off the meal with a popsicle made with unlikely layers of Indian pickle, mulberry and white chocolate. Vegetarian menus available.

A street that is busy with pedestrians and lined with shopfronts. The facade of a building that faces the street appears to be old and rundown.

Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots in Lower Parel with the Bombay Poetry Crawl, a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history.

A close-up of a stained glass window depicting a man in a red robe kneeling in prayer.

Walk through the soft-colored shadows cast by stained-glass windows in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, more commonly known as the Afghan Church , which reopened in March after a two-year renovation. The building, in the leafy Navy Nagar, a naval area at the southern tip of Mumbai, was completed in 1858 and commemorates the more than 4,500 Indian and British soldiers who died during the first Anglo-Afghan war, including in its disastrous retreat from Kabul. The church is also known for multifaith prayers, Indian classical music concerts and a midnight Mass at Christmas. Entry is free.

A plate of scrambled eggs, buttered toast and half a roasted tomato rests on a table. A cup of coffee with steamed milk is visible in the background on the same table.

Kala Ghoda Cafe

Dig into a breakfast of akuri, a spicy scrambled egg dish (345 rupees) that is traditional in India’s Parsi community, at Kala Ghoda Cafe , in the Kala Ghoda neighborhood. Then walk to the sprawling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya , a museum with manicured lawns and a Gothic-style building topped with a bulbous dome. As part of “ Ancient Sculptures ,” showing through October, chiseled Greek gods and Egyptian deities from the British Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum share space with Assyrian gods from CSMVS’s permanent collection. The museum’s permanent galleries are a trove of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculptures and also feature artifacts from the ancient Indus Valley civilization. Tickets, 150 rupees for Indian nationals; 700 rupees for foreigners.

A brightly lit store with white walls displays a long rack of clothing, including gingham skirts and tops, white shirts and denim apparel.

Stroll the Kala Ghoda neighborhood, starting with Artisans ’, a gallery and shop in a graffiti-covered building that showcases traditional Indian crafts. In the area’s ever-expanding fashion district, browse crisp white shirts with handmade lace collars (from around 9,500 rupees) at Moonray , a women’s fashion label and shop (its co-founder also runs the Chanakya School of Craft , which teaches women embroidery and collaborates with Dior). Also check out Payal Khandwala , which has silk tops (14,000 rupees), sharply cut suits and trench coats in bold-colored Indian fabric, and Ogaan , with heavily embellished wedding dresses, pleated dresses and more. Then walk to Kitab Khana , an independent bookstore in a more-than-century-old building with Corinthian columns in the nearby Fort district. Browse the well-curated selection of Indian literature and the books on history and Gandhian thought that line the high shelves.

People eat from bright-yellow plates in a sparsely decorated restaurant with diner-like seating and metallic table tops. A chalkboard on the wall lists menu items and says the name of the restaurant, "Swati Snacks."

Swati Snacks

A dizzying range of delicacies can be found on Mumbai’s khao gallis, a Hindi term for “food streets.” The safest way to try them all (and avoid tummy trouble) might be at Swati Snacks , a six-decade-old restaurant in the Tardeo area. Have the vada pav (175 rupees), like garlicky potato sliders, and the signature panki (230 rupees), a wispy rice pancake flavored with mint or dill that arrives steaming in a banana-leaf parcel. Then visit the nearby Mani Bhavan , a three-story building where Mohandas K. Gandhi, known as the father of the nation, often stayed; it is now a museum. Spinning wheels and floor seating in his preserved, spartan bedroom provide a window to his belief that the route to Indian independence could come only through discipline and self-reliance. Entry, 20 rupees.

A person wearing a collared shirt rests against a wall that features vibrant blue tiling in geometric patterns.

Moghal Masjid

Take a car to Byculla, the chaotic old quarter of Mumbai. Get a coffee (Americano, 228 rupees) at the Craftery by Subko , a new Mumbai cafe and roastery chain bringing hipsters to this part of the city. Then drive through the busy, narrow streets to see some of Mumbai’s diverse and beautiful religious monuments. Visit the nearby Moghal Masjid , a jewel-like, Iranian-style Shiite mosque built in 1860, with intricate blue tiling adorning a curved entrance. Women cannot pray inside the mosque but can enter the compound, which has a pool for ablution. Take in the facade of Hasnabad Dargah , a pristine, ivory-colored mausoleum, known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to the original (entry only for Shia Ismaili Muslims). Not far from there is the Magen David Synagogue (entry, 300 rupees), recognizable by its sky blue clock tower, built in the 1860s to serve Mumbai’s once wealthy and influential, but now vanishing , Jewish community.

One person takes a photo using a smartphone inside a restaurant with large windows that reveal an orange sun, shrouded in smog, suspended above the sea.

Bastian at the Top

In the Dadar neighborhood, shop for handwoven saris (from 2,000 rupees) and scarves at Induri Saree Centre , a candy-box-size store. Then line up at Aaswad Upahar and Mithai Griha , a no-frills Dadar institution best visited in April and May with the arrival of fragrant and luscious Alphonso mangoes. Aaswad does a seasonal mango-themed thali (a platter of various small dishes; 470 rupees) that includes a saffron, mango and cardamom drink; a mango dal; and chilled mango pulp called aamras that is the taste of a Mumbai summer in a bowl. Then cross the street to the gleaming, new Kohinoor Square mall and take the elevator 48 floors to Bastian at the Top . With a tree-lined plunge pool and glowing figurines carved into giant pillars, it can feel more like a theme park than a restaurant (it often attracts Bollywood celebrities). It’s worth a cocktail (1,295 rupees) just to take in the sweeping views of the bay.

A person dressed in black performs on a stage to a watching crowd. The performer is backlit by a wall of lamps.

Catch a show at G5A, a cultural center housed in a repurposed textile mill compound.

Two people walk past a vibrant street mural of three dancing women dressed in ornate Indian dress.

A mural by Ranjit Dahiya

The laid-back suburb of Bandra has Portuguese bungalows, Bollywood studios and the full wattage of star homes along with fans hoping for a glimpse. The best bet for encountering Bollywood stars is on the Technicolor, larger-than-life murals in the area’s charming lanes. See a pistol-wielding Dharmendra, from the iconic 1975 movie “Sholay,” opposite the Subko cafe on Chapel Road. Next to it is a triptych of Bollywood’s dancing divas — a feathered Helen and a bejeweled Waheeda Rehman and Asha Parekh. (Ranjit Dahiya, the artist behind many of these murals, also teaches workshops .) Stroll on to Waroda Road (past a moody depiction of the celebrated actor Irrfan Khan) to reach the brightly colored Veronica’s , an all-day cafe that has become something of a living room for Bandra’s young set, who come for creative bites like chicken-and-cheese-filled breakfast momos (395 rupees), potato waffles (350 rupees) and babka stuffed with chorizo (275 rupees).

Leave the chaos of the city behind, driving north to reach the entrance of Sanjay Gandhi National Park , a 40-square-mile preserve where deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard roam. From inside the park, minivans drive visitors about 10 minutes through the forest (1,000 rupees round-trip) to the bottom of a hill. From there, walk up to the Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist complex of more than 100 caves, the oldest dating back 2,000 years, carved into basalt. Some form large, pillared prayer halls, while others feature carved serene Buddhist deities in prayer. Also see the waterways, loosely cut into the hills, that provided water to the monks who lived and meditated there many centuries ago. Park entry, 95 rupees; caves entry, 25 rupees.
