There are magnificent volcanoes, beautiful cloud forests, stunning river basins, and many beaches along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of this country. Luxury Cruises to Costa Rica

Sail to a place often regarded as paradise on a luxury cruise to Costa Rica. With both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, lush rainforest, volcanoes, misty highlands, and laid-back cities and beach towns, this Central American country does indeed seem blessed with wonder, natural and otherwise. Ticos, as Costa Ricans are known, celebrate their good fortune by greeting one another with “pura vida” (pure life), the essence of this happy, laid back, and spectacularly beautiful country.

These Central America cruises give you a chance to experience nature at its most pristine. You’ll have the chance to see cloud forests and coffee plantations, visit a sloth sanctuary, and observe monkeys and crocodiles in the wild. Opt for the thrills of white water rafting or zip-lining, or simply while away your time on long, golden beaches.

Costa Rica Cruise Highlights

Surf & sand.

Costa Rica’s beaches are legendary. On the west coast, you’ll find calm bays for swimming backed by dense rainforest, as well as stretches of wave breaks that make for exhilarating surfing. Costa Rica’s east coast borders the calm, teal water of the Caribbean, making for a blissful beach day and opportunities for snorkeling and sea kayaking.

Forests & Wildlife

Costa Rica is blessed with both tropical rainforests along the coast and mist-shrouded cloud forests in the highlands. Both offer myriad adventures, from hiking to zip lining, aerial trams, and ATV excursions. Wildlife is abundant—look out for toucans in the trees or pairs of scarlet macaws soaring over the forest canopy. Butterflies here seem super-sized, in brilliant colors, while slow-moving sloths gaze down at you from the trees.

Sustainability

Costa Ricans are deeply committed to protecting the natural world, and you’ll find several activities that combine excitement with ecotourism. Visit a sloth sanctuary from Puerto Limón, or learn about the ecology of stingless bees at Api Agricultura. Visit Cahuita National Park with a naturalist, or find out about the conservation of macaws at the Natuwa Sanctuary at El Manantial.

Explore some of Florida’s busy, modern cities, quiet beach towns, and beautiful natural areas.

If you’re thinking about taking a cruise out of Florida with a visit to the Costa Rican Caribbean coast, you have four ports to choose from: Miami , Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) , Tampa , and Port Canaveral (Orlando) . Whichever departure port you choose on your journey from Florida to the Costa Rican Caribbean coast, with multiple stops in all kinds of different ports, you’ll be greeted by sandy white beaches, tropical weather, lush green landscapes, and colorful cultures.

Everything Costa Rica has to offer, from ziplining to river tours, fantastic food to amazing beaches, and everything in between, can be found across the Limon Province. Take a zipline and canopy tour to get a closer look at the jungle that surrounds the Tortuguero Canal. The name, Playa Bonita, or “Beautiful Beach,” should be enough to entice you to visit this magnificent beach. They are situated in a small inlet that provides excellent surfing, beach relaxation, and sand play. Cahuita, Playa Bonita, Playa Cieneguita, and other beaches surrounding Puerto Limon provide fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities where you may see gorgeous coral reefs, amazing fish, and other wildlife.

NBC 6 South Florida

From ultra-luxury to megaships, a look at all the ways to cruise in 2024

If you're new to cruising or have only been on a couple of caribbean adventures, you may not realize how many different types of cruises and ships there are, by kris anderson • published march 24, 2024 • updated on march 24, 2024 at 7:22 am.

If you live in South Florida you've no doubt seen cruise ships docked or out on the open seas, heading to or coming from somewhere nearby or far away.

And if you're new to cruising or have only been on a couple of Caribbean adventures, you may not realize how many different types of cruises and ships there are.

From huge ships like the Icon of the Seas that can hold up to 7,600 passengers to smaller luxury vessesl with fewer than 100 passengers on board, and from heading up and down Florida's coast to across the world, the types of ships and destinations are nearly limitless.

When many think of cruising, they might picture big beautiful ships that are resorts at sea, with thousands of passengers on board enjoying the food, drinks and entertainment.

Get South Florida local news, weather forecasts and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC South Florida newsletters.

"For a lot of people that megaship experience is really what they’re looking for. This is the big cruise ships, you see them all the time out of South Florida," said Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of the Cruise Critic website.

From Carnival to Norwegian, MSC, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Disney, Celebrity, Holland America, Virgin and more, all of the major cruise lines are right in South Florida's backyard.

Ken Muscat, the managing director of Scenic Group and someone who's worked in the cruise industry for 30 years, said that means more options for cruisers.

"I think that's one of the greatest things about the cruise industry. It's so diverse and there really is something for everybody," Muscat said.

Muscat said the bigger ships may have more appeal for a wider range of travelers.

"I think the big ships are catered best towards multigenerational travel," Muscat said. "You've got families, you've got the grandparents that are coming along from both sets of parents, you've got the young kids and these big ships offer so many different alternatives for everybody."

He also said the smaller ships have something to offer as well.

"Now, we're also seeing this trend of smaller ships and new brands that are coming into the industry that are offering these ultra luxury or very premium kind of products," Muscat said.

McDaniel agreed.

"They are very inclusive. The service is top notch, and the dining is excellent," she said. "These small ships can take you to more remote places around the world, smaller ports. So you’re going to see different places than you might see with some of these megaships."

Smaller ships might provide a sunset sailing into St. Barts or a stroll in the sand on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands.

Companies like Scenic, Regent Seven Seas, Emerald, Ritz Carlton, Silversea and Explora Journeys offer these five-star sailings out of South Florida and other ports in the Caribbean, just a short plane ride away.

If you're up for a longer plane ride, you can venture on board a river cruise to explore the winding waterways of Asia and Europe.

"The food is wonderful, the wine is flowing. But every day you're in these small little ports," said Michelle Fee, CEO of Cruise Planners. "And you get to experience that by stepping off the ship and you're right in the little, quaint town."

And since there are two international airports in South Florida, there's another cool cruising option: expedition cruises.

These are bucket list trips with exotic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations.

"They typically will do longer cruises, world cruises, or visit places all over the Med[Mediterranean], Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galapagos, very exotic ports of call," Muscat said.

With more and more companies offering expedition excursions, these remote destinations are more accessible than ever before.

"I’m a firm believer that there is a cruise and a cruise ship for every single person on the planet," McDaniel said.

Lionel Messi to miss Argentina friendlies vs. El Salvador, Costa Rica with hamstring injury

L ionel Messi will miss Argentina's friendly matches against El Salvador and Costa Rice due to a hamstring injury. The 36 year old has not featured since being withdrawn in the 51st minute of Inter Miami's CONCACAF Champions Cup win over Nashville on Thursday, subsequently missing his side's trip to D.C. United on Sunday .

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) have now confirmed that Messi will play no part in the friendlies in Philadelphia on Friday and Los Angeles four days later. The AFA confirmed that their captain would be absent with "a minor injury to the hamstring of his right leg."

Messi's return could come on April 4 when Inter Miami host Monterrey in the first leg of the Champions Cup quarterfinal. Head coach Tata Martino said: "We'll continuously evaluate what he's doing. The objective is for him to arrive to be able to play in the quarterfinals of Champions Cup. We don't want to take a risk."

Messi has played five games in all competitions for the Herons this season, scoring five and providing two assists. Without their talisman at the weekend, Miami still claimed a 3-1 win thanks to two goals from Luis Suarez. Argentina, meanwhile, have not announced a replacement for Messi.

Soccer | Lionel Messi to miss Argentina’s exhibition match at Coliseum

Messi left inter miami’s concacaf champions cup game early last week and then sat out saturday’s mls game against d.c. united.

cruise ship from costa rica to miami

Inter Miami and Argentina men’s national soccer team star Lionel Messi has been ruled out of the upcoming U.S. tour, including the March 26 game at the L.A. Coliseum against Costa Rica.

Argentina kicks off its U.S. international exhibition schedule on Friday in Philadelphia against El Salvador and four days later, Argentina faces Costa Rica at the Coliseum (7:30 p.m.).

The Argentine Federation confirmed the news Monday afternoon via its X account (formerly Twitter): “The captain of @Argentina, Lionel Messi, will not be able to be in the squad for the friendlies in #USA due to a minor injury to the hamstring of his right leg suffered in his team’s @InterMiamiCF match against Nashville SC.”

Messi was subbed off early in the second half of last week’s CONCACAF Champions Cup game against Nashville SC. Coach Tata Martino said it was due to a “physical issue” with his right leg.

Messi also missed Inter Miami’s game against D.C. United on Saturday.

According to Ticketmaster, the lowest-priced tickets available for the Costa Rica match are $120.

Costa Rica Contractor Under Investigation for Prohibited Practices

Costa rica crocodile attack during nesting season turns deadly, costa rica braces for doubling of migrant influx in coming year, costa rica bridges, restrictions part of traffic fix, volunteers in costa rica team up to shield national park from blazes, costa rica and canada secure final spots in 2024 copa america.

Tico Times

Costa Rica, with a triumph over Honduras, and Canada earned the last two tickets to the 2024 Copa America on Saturday in playoff matches held in Frisco (Texas, United States). Canada defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in their playoff and will compete in the continental tournament for the first time, also playing the opening match on June 20 against Argentina, the current champion.

Costa Rica came back from an early goal down to beat Honduras 3-1 and advance to their sixth Copa America, where they will debut against Brazil on June 24 in Los Angeles (California) in Group D. The team captained by Keylor Navas will also face Colombia and Paraguay in that group.

“Today was a final and many players are not used to playing this type of match,” stressed Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro, who took over the Costa Rican bench at the end of last year.

“I had to take over a national team in a process of generational change, without time to test and the obligation to get results,” he recalled. “Qualifying for the Copa America doesn’t change anything for me, but the chance to have the players for 30 days and play against top-level teams does.”

Alfaro’s young team showed character to react after conceding a first goal to Michaell Chirinos in the 10th minute. The winger put Honduras ahead with a spectacular volley from outside the area that unleashed the jubilation of the ‘Catracha’ fans, who made up the majority of the 20,000 spectators that packed the Toyota Stadium.

A huge shame

Costa Rica responded just two minutes later, taking advantage of an error by Argentine-born goalkeeper Jonathan Rougier, who gifted Orlando Galo the equalizer with a poor clearance from a header in the box.

Young Warren Madrigal put Costa Rica ahead in the 56th minute with a thunderbolt into the top corner, and Jefferson Brenes sealed the victory and qualification in the 62nd minute with a shot from outside the area that surprised Rougier after deflecting off a defender.

“I thank the fans for their support and apologize to them,” said Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda. “I feel a huge shame because we could not give them what we wanted. We had the illusion of being in the Copa America.”

“The first half was very even and we did not assimilate the 1-1. We wanted to do things that we shouldn’t have,” lamented the Colombian coach.

Costa Rica, who will face Argentina in a friendly in Los Angeles on Tuesday, returns to the Copa America after participating in the 1997, 2001, 2004, 2011, and 2016 editions. So far, their best results are the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2004.

In the first playoff match, Canada defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 with goals from Cyle Larin and Jacob Shaffelburg in the 61st and 90+1 minutes.

The team led by Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) continues to make progress after playing in their first World Cup in 36 years in Qatar in 2022 and reaching the final of the Concacaf Nations League in 2023.

Canada will be the rival of Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Atlanta (Georgia) in the opening game of the Copa America, which will be held throughout the United States until the final on July 14 in Miami (Florida).

The Conmebol championship was expanded this year to include six teams from Concacaf, of which the United States, Mexico, Panama, and Jamaica were already qualified.
