Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s Singapore Office Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

taiwan tourism bureau singapore office

Record high visitor numbers from Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, India and Middle East in 2017 mark the tourism regional hub’s success

Text by Rachel Kwek

When the bureau’s Singapore office was set up in 1978, Taiwan only had 40,000 visitors from Singapore. Last year, the number of visitors from Singapore hit a record high of 420,000 with the joint efforts of the office’s founding director Chen Tieguan; successive directors Yang Benli, Zhao Guangxun, Zheng Zhihong and Xie Changming; and current director Lin Xinren.

President of Taiwan Tourism Bureau, Mr Zhou Yonghui, delivered a special message: “Taiwan is like a cruise ship that carries all the good memories for all passengers! 40 years have gone by in a flash. Since we set up our office in Singapore in 1978, we have not only serviced tourists but also eased the homesickness of Taiwanese people living here.”

The highlight of the celebrations, the 40th anniversary party and the Taiwan Tourism Promotion Conference held at JW Marriot Hotel on August 20, were attended by VIPs, travel operators and media from both Taiwan and Singapore. Directors of Taiwan Tourism Bureau Singapore thanked the community for the support they have extended towards the office in various ways. Additionally, buyers could interact one-to-one at a trade fair held that afternoon. The nine county governments of Taiwan also introduced the latest themed itineraries, which not only allow local tour agencies to tailor their Taiwan tour packages in advance but also attract Singaporeans to revisit.

To celebrate this milestone, the bureau’s local office lined up musical performances to boost Singaporeans’ interest to visit Taiwan. The line-up of celebratory activities included popular singer-songwriter Eric Chou’s TWENTY TWO Plus Asia Tour concert and the Atayal Dreams concert performed by Hisinchu Atayal Choir.

With operations spanning Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, India and Middle East, the bureau’s Singapore’s office plays a key role in supporting Taiwan’s southbound policy in the area of tourism. In 2017, the number of visitors from all these areas not only increased significantly but reached a record high. Director Lin Xinren said, “In the past 40 years, the office has gone through foundation building, growth and transformation since its founding. Moving forward, Taiwan Tourism Bureau aims to further promote Taiwan in Singapore, India, New Zealand, Australia, Israel and Arab countries through innovative travel solutions and creative marketing. It looks forward to welcoming the next 40 years and creating more growth in the tourism sector by 2020.”

In conjunction with its 40th Anniversary, Taiwan Tourism Bureau is collaborating with Asian Geographic to bring you special giveaways! Get yours at https://www.facebook.com/AsianGeo/ !

Faster clearance for Singaporeans visiting Taiwan with access to airport e-gates

taiwan tourism bureau singapore office

SINGAPORE – Singapore passport holders visiting Taiwan will from Thursday be allowed to use the e-gates at the island’s airports for speedier immigration clearance, said Taiwan’s Interior Ministry.

Travellers will first have to register at the immigration counters with their passports and have photos of their faces taken and fingerprints recorded.

According to Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency, Singapore is the sixth country – after the United States, South Korea, Australia, Italy and Germany – whose citizens will be allowed to use the e-gates at immigration.

Previously, the e-gates could be used only by Taiwan passport holders and foreigners who hold residency status on the island.

Taiwan’s Deputy Interior Minister Wu Jung-hui said on Thursday that Singaporeans aged 12 and above who are at least 140cm tall, holding biometric passports with at least six months’ validity and have no prior criminal convictions on the island will be allowed to use the e-gates.

A ceremony to mark the start of this privilege for Singaporean travellers was held on Thursday evening in Taipei. Mr Yip Wei Kiat, the Trade Representative of the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei, attended the event.

Mr Wu said this latest move reciprocates Singapore’s decision to extend usage of its automated immigration lanes to Taiwan passport holders in April – the island is now one of 51 jurisdictions whose passport holders are granted this access.

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said in April that it aims to make automated immigration clearance the norm at the country’s airport and land checkpoints.

It expects 95 per cent of all arrivals at Singapore Changi Airport to be cleared through the automated lanes by the first quarter of 2024.

Taiwan is a popular tourist destination for travellers from Singapore, with 460,000 registered visitors to the island in 2019, before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Taiwan Tourism Bureau in Singapore, almost 160,000 Singaporeans visited Taiwan from January to May 2023, more than 90 per cent of the pre-pandemic figures in 2019.

In terms of the number of travellers from South-east Asia visiting Taiwan, Singaporeans are the fourth-largest group, after those from Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Welcome to Taiwan

The Tourism Administration has worked hard to highlight Taiwan to the world amid increasing international competition during the current post-pandemic revival in global tourism. In 2023, Taiwan was once again ranked among the world’s top-three non-OIC tourist destinations in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), and was named as a 2023 “Favorite Adventure Destination” by US-based web publisher Trazee Travel. In addition, stories from six of Taiwan’s national scenic area administration (NSAA) offices were recognized among the Top 100 at the Global Green Destination Day Conference. In March 2024, two NSAA offices received “Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards” at the International Travel Fair Berlin (ITB).

Taiwan is a unique alpine island with a diversity of topographies, ecologies and cultures. Its people are friendly and enthusiastic. Taiwan’s island-circling railway lines and bicycle trails, as well as the national greenways traversed by its ancestral peoples, are all important tourism resources. The Tourism Administration has attracted the attention of international tourists with its "Mountains, Waters, and Fun Around the Island" campaign. In addition, it is promoting 2024 as the year of “Round-Island Fun in Taiwan” to welcome tourists from near and far to Taiwan through all four seasons.

In line with international trends, the Tourism Administration is also promoting themes such as 1) implementing “Sustainable Taiwan” in its scenic area management, 2) enhancing tourism software and hardware, 3) building and shaping the Taiwan tourism brand, and 4) developing Taiwan into a unique tourism destination.

Taiwan's natural features, culture and technical development all support inbound tourism. Visitors can experience a wide variety of traditional celebrations, religious practices and ethnic cultures. Taiwan welcomes friends from all over the world. Regardless of age or interests, an attractive itinerary awaits. Discover Taiwan and enjoy a new and interesting travel experience!

Taiwan Tourism Bureau is now known as Taiwan Tourism Administration

Friday, September 22, 2023 Favorite

Taiwan, Tourism, China, Travel Policy, Global Impact

On September 15, 2023, Taiwan’s tourism sector reached a significant milestone as it transitioned from being a Bureau to a full-fledged Administration.

Chou Yung-Hui, the former bureau chief, has been appointed as the first Director-General of the newly formed Taiwan Tourism Administration. This change reflects the Taiwanese government’s commitment to further enhancing the country’s tourism industry.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has expressed its confidence in Chou Yung-Hui’s leadership and vision for Taiwan’s tourism sector. One of the ambitious goals set for the Administration is to attract a total of 12 million visitors to Taiwan in 2024. This indicates the government’s dedication to promoting Taiwan as a premier destination for travelers from around the world.

To celebrate this significant development, the Taiwan the Lucky Land Campaign has introduced a new pre-paid card prize for participants. The campaign is designed for independent travelers (FITs) planning trips to Taiwan. Participants have the chance to win prizes valued at NT$5,000, which is approximately equivalent to S$210. These prizes can be used within Taiwan and are available for participants until June 30, 2025.

To qualify for the Taiwan the Lucky Land Campaign, participants must meet specific criteria, including holding foreign (non-ROC) passports, planning to stay in Taiwan for a duration of 3 to 90 days, not being part of tour groups, and not applying for any group-related ROC travel incentives. This campaign aims to attract and reward individual travelers who wish to explore Taiwan independently, promoting a diverse and immersive experience of the country.

The prizes offered in the campaign come in the form of a pre-paid (E-ticket) card or a set of accommodation vouchers. These prizes are valid for up to 90 days after issuance, providing flexibility for winners to use them during their travels in Taiwan.

The elevation of Taiwan’s tourism sector to an Administration, along with initiatives like the Taiwan the Lucky Land Campaign, underscores the country’s commitment to providing exceptional experiences to visitors and fostering tourism growth in the years ahead. With Chou Yung-Hui at the helm, Taiwan’s tourism industry is poised for exciting developments and increased international recognition.

Follow our news, recent searches, taiwan earthquake: missing singapore couple only ones still unaccounted for, advertisement.

Search teams looking for Sim Hwee Kok and Neo Siew Choo have suspended operations because of aftershocks.

Singaporeans Sim Hwee Kok and Neo Siew Choo have been missing since an earthquake struck Taiwan on Apr 3, 2024. They were last seen in CCTV footage preparing to board a bus heading to Taroko National Park about two hours before the quake struck. SINGAPORE: Almost two weeks after the massive earthquake that struck Taiwan on Apr 3, Singaporeans Sim Hwee Kok and Neo Siew Choo are the only people still unaccounted for, as aftershocks forced search teams to stop work over the weekend.

One more body, that of a male driver, was found on Saturday (Apr 13) along the Shakadang Trail in eastern Hualien county, bringing the death toll from the 7.2-magnitude quake to 17.

It is on this trail that the Singaporean couple are believed to have gone missing, according to Taiwan's National Fire Agency. They were last seen alighting from a shuttle bus at Shakadang Trail at about 7.20am on Apr 3, about 40 minutes before the quake struck.

In agreement with the couple's family members - three of them arrived in Taiwan more than a week ago - the search was suspended on Sunday due to the danger of aftershocks, landslides and falling rocks. Hualien, near the quake's epicentre, has been roiled by more than 800 aftershocks.

Expressing their gratitude to search-and-rescue personnel via the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei, the family members said they hoped search efforts would resume at an appropriate time, while taking safety into account.

"We hope that Hualien can be rebuilt as soon as possible so that more people can experience the beauty of Hualien and feel the warmth of the people in Hualien," the family members added.

The Hualien Fire County Bureau said search and rescue efforts would restart once the risks have subsided.

Taiwanese media also reported that a monk had led prayers at the entrance of the trail, with the family members in attendance.

Eight other Singaporeans were among 71 foreigners rescued  after they were trapped in Hualien. Two Singaporeans suffered light injuries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Apr 5.

The quake is the most powerful tremor to strike Taiwan since a 7.6-magnitude quake hit the island in 1999. Around 2,400 people died in that quake, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history.
