How to close all safari tabs at once on iphone and ipad.

Don't keep a million tabs open - that is what bookmarks are for.

Quick Links

How to close every tab by pressing the tab switcher button, how to close all safari tabs on the tab switcher screen, how to reopen recently closed tabs, key takeaways.

  • Close all your Safari tabs at once by long-pressing the tab switcher button and selecting "Close All Tabs" in the pop-up menu. Confirm with another tap.
  • Another way to close all tabs is by long-pressing the "Done" button on the tab switcher screen and selecting "Close All Tabs" in the pop-up menu. Confirm again.
  • To reopen recently closed tabs, tap the tab switcher button, long-press the "+" button, and select the desired tab from the "Recently Closed Tabs" list. Stay out of Private Browsing mode. Good luck!

If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and need to clear them out quickly, it can be tedious to "X" them out one at a time. Luckily, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they also work in Private Browsing mode. Here's how.

First, open "Safari" on your iPhone or iPad. While on any page, locate the tab switcher button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

The tab switcher button in Safari on iPad.

On the iPhone, it's in the lower-right corner of the screen.

The tab switcher button in Safari on iPhone.

Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there for a moment, preforming a "long press." In the menu that pops up, select "Close All Tabs." (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)

Hold the button, then tap

When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap "Close All Tabs" again. After that, all of your browser tabs will close.

There's another way to quickly close all tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. First, open "Safari," then tap the tab switcher button once.

On the tab switcher screen, locate the "Done" button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the screen on the iPad and in the lower-right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long-press the "Done" button — place and hold your finger there for a moment until a pop-up appears. In the pop-up, select "Close All Tabs." The exact name of the pop-up action will vary, depending on the number of tabs you have open.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all the tabs with another pop-up message. Select "Close All Tabs" again. Then all of your Safari tabs will close instantly. The same action works in Private Browsing mode. Pretty handy!

If you accidentally closed all of your tabs and would like to get them back, you can retrieve them one at a time as long as you aren't in Private Browsing mode . Just tap the tab switcher button, then long-press the "+" button until a "Recently Closed Tabs" list appears . From there you can tap on entries in the list to open them again in Safari. Good luck!

[SOLVED] Window.open does not work on ios safari

we are creating a game and need to open some windows on button clicks, this does not seem to work on ios safari due to pop-up blocking. we already looked at other projects and are using the same code as the flappy bird tutorial project. It seems to work there, but not in ours. We also looked at some more general javascript solutions, but these also seem fruitless. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Which buttons are meant to open new windows?

the red button at the top is easiest to test, but there are a few. mainly the share buttons on the game over screen.

alright, the solution is found! apparently it does not work when called after a button press, but it does work when called through an event. The buttons in our example are sprites that fire an event when clicked on, while our project worked with buttons. thanks for taking a look Yaustar.

Nice one in finding the solution and thank you for posting it here.

Yes, as a protection measure, browsers tend to only have operations like this only happen on the event callback.

iOS 7: Closing All Open Safari Windows on Your iPhone or iPad

As you may know, “Private Browsing” is what Apple calls the feature that prevents the webpages you’re viewing from being stored in your history (or being suggested as future autofill options). It’s available within both Safari on the Mac and mobile Safari, so no matter which of your devices you’re on, you can be assured that no one will be able to go back and look at what sites you’ve been to. I’m sure some of you are shrugging right now, as if to say, “So what if people look at my browsing history?” Others of you are putting clauses in your wills specifying that your computers be set on fire upon your death. I won’t comment on which camp I fall into.

So to turn this feature on for the iPhone, first tap the “Show All Windows” button at the bottom-right of your screen.

iphone safari window.open

On the iPhone, you’ll then see every window you’ve got open, organized in a card-deck-shuffley sort of way. (Don’t you love my highly technical language?) Just so you know, you can swipe any window from right to left to close it on that screen.

iphone safari window.open

For all device types, if you want to turn on Private Browsing, you’ll tap the “Private” button.

iphone safari window.open

This tip isn’t just about toggling that on, however—oh my, no.  Instead, I want to highlight the fact that when you do touch that “Private” button, Safari will ask you if you’d like to close all existing windows (or iPad tabs) before you switch over to the new mode.

iphone safari window.open

Select “Close All,” and it’ll do just that. You’ll see that Safari’s swapped to a dark grey interface, which indicates that you’re currently browsing privately.

iphone safari window.open

At that point, you can repeat the steps above to switch back to normal browsing if you want to. And y es, I blurred out the names of my bookmarks. No reason. I said, NO REASON. Move along.

How to delete your Safari history on Mac, iPhone, or iPad

  • Clearing your Safari history removes cookies and reduces online tracking.
  • The process for deleting web history is different for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
  • You can use Private Browsing Mode to prevent web history from being saved.

From accessing your bank account on a shared computer to Googling embarrassing queries, there are a number of reasons to want to clear out your search history. Deleting your history on Safari removes your trail of web browsing, but the process also does more than clear out potentially embarrassing websites.

Clearing your history will also remove associated cookies from the web browser, reducing the number of ways you are being tracked online. While clearing your web history only removes cookies from Safari and not third-party websites that already have your data, it can still be helpful to reduce online tracking. Clearing the related cache can also sometimes fix bugs.

Deleting a web history from Safari isn't a terribly complicated process, but the steps are a bit different if you are using a MacBook , iPad , or iPhone . The steps for clearing several web pages and a single website are also different. Some privacy settings can also prevent you from deleting any web history, leaving the buttons you need grayed out.

How to close all Safari tabs on iPhone at the same time

There are also a few tricks that can make the process simpler. For example, if you turn on iCloud for Safari, when you delete the history from your Mac, it will automatically be deleted from your phone and tablet too. If you know you want to delete your web history before you make a single click, you can use Private Browsing Mode instead.

Whether you are a murder mystery writer looking to eliminate search queries that would raise the eyebrows of any detective, or you want to reduce the number of cookies tracking you, this guide will tell you how to delete Safari history in a few simple steps.

How to delete Safari history on a Mac

Safari allows you to delete a lot of web history from a Mac or MacBook at once by allowing you to choose the dates for which you would like to erase. If you want to clear websites from the last hour, last day, last two days or all of your web history, this is the process to use.

  • Open Safari
  • From the top toolbar, click on History , then click Clear History.
  • In the pop-up window, use the drop-down menu to select the time period you want to clear from your history.
  • Click Clear History .

How to delete Safari history on an iPhone or iPad

The steps for clearing out your Safari history on an iPhone is quite different from using a Safari browser on a Mac. But, the process is the same across both iPhones and iPads, so these steps below work for both your phone and tablet.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Select Safari.
  • Scroll down to the Privacy & Security section and select Clear History and Website Data.
  • On the next page, tap the time frame that you would like to delete the history for.
  • Optional: If you also want to close out of all open websites, tap the toggle for Close All Tabs.
  • Tap Clear History.

How to delete a single website from Safari history

Safari allows you to easily delete websites from the last hour, day, two days, or your entire web history easily. But, if you only want to remove a single website, you'll instead have to access your history, and then select the individual page to remove.

  • Open a Safari browser.
  • From the top toolbar, select History > Show All History. Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Y.
  • Select the website entry that you wish to delete. If that site was not visited today, you will need to tap on the date that you visited the website to find it or use the search bar at the top.
  • Right-click on the website entry and select delete.

On an iPhone or iPad:

  • Tap the Bookmark icon on the bottom (it looks like an open book).
  • Tap the Clock or History icon at the top of the page.
  • Locate the website that you wish to delete from your history -- your history is organized by the date you visited.
  • On the website you wish to delete, swipe left, then tap on the red trash icon.

How to use Bing Chat on Safari

How to use private mode in safari.

If you know that you'll want to delete the website that you are about to visit from your history, try using Private Browsing Mode instead. This mode does not save any website history, including search history and autofill information. That means you can do your online banking without going back and deleting your web history when you are done.

To use Private Browsing Mode on a Mac:

  • Open Safari.
  • On the top toolbar, go to File > New Private Window.
  • Use this new private window for browsing. You can quickly see if a Safari browser is Private because the field to type in the URL is dark gray instead of white.

To use Private Browsing Mode on iOS:

  • Tap the tab icon in the bottom left corner.
  • At the bottom of the screen, tap Private (swipe to see all the toppings in this toolbar if you do not see the Private option.)
  • Private browsing will have a dark gray URL field instead of white. To return to regular browsing, repeat the steps but this time swipe back to your open tabs.

How to use picture-in-picture mode in Safari on Mac

How to instantly clear your web history from multiple devices.

With iCloud , Safari can save your web browsing across all the devices that you use with your Apple ID. While that's helpful for quickly recalling a website no matter what device you first opened it with, it also syncs any deletions to the web history across your devices . That means if you delete a web page from your history on a Mac, it will automatically be deleted from your iPhone too -- as long as both devices are logged into the same Apple ID and iCloud for Safari is enabled.

iCloud for Safari can be enabled during the setup process for a new device, but it can also be turned on and off from the Settings app:

  • Tap on your Apple ID or name at the top.
  • Tap on iCloud.
  • Under Apps Using iCloud, select Show All . (If you are running iOS 15 or earlier, you may not see the full list already instead of the Show All option, in which case you can jump to the next step.)
  • Toggle on Safari from the list.

Why can't I clear my Safari history?

In some cases, the buttons that you need to tap to clear your Safari history are gray. But why can't you delete your Safari history, and how do you fix it? Here are a few common reasons why the Safari history options are grayed out:

  • You've already deleted your history and there are no more websites to clear out.
  • Web content restrictions are turned on. Some parental control settings prevent kids and teens from deleting their web history, while other content restrictions can also prevent you from deleting. To access the content restriction options, open the Settings app and go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • You are using Private Browsing Mode. This mode does not save your web history, so you have nothing to delete.

Can you permanently delete safari history.

Deleting your Safari history makes it difficult for the average person to recover the past websites that you have visited. You Need to Download iOS 17.4 Right Now

Apple said the update patches two issues that could be actively exploited.

The Apple logo with a padlock on top of it

Apple released iOS 17.4 on Tuesday , more than a month after the tech giant released iOS 17.3 . While the latest update brings new emoji to all users and new app store capabilities to people in the European Union, it also patches a few issues that Apple said might be actively exploited.

CNET Tech Tips logo

To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update , tap Install Now and follow the onscreen prompts.

According to Apple , iOS 17.4 patches two security issues, which affect your iPhone's kernel and RTKit. The kernel is the software at the core of your operating system, while RTKit is Apple's real-time operating system. A real-time operating system is used when a large number of events must be accepted or processed in a certain amount of time, according to the computer science resource site Geeks for Geeks .

Apple writes that in both instances, "An attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability may be able to bypass kernel memory protections."

Memory protections control how much memory a process has access to. According to Geeks for Geeks , these protections can stop software from taking over an excessive amount of memory, which could harm other software on your device or cause you to lose some of your data. Your system could be severely damaged if a malicious actor were to bypass these protections.

The patches in iOS 17.4 also address a few other issues, like a private browsing bug in Safari, which could cause your private locked tabs to be momentarily visible while switching tab groups. However, Apple didn't say that these other issues could be actively exploited.

iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 updates released by Apple

Apple has released iOS 17.4 update for iPhone, and ipadOS 17.4 update for iPad.

The iOS/iPadOS 17.4 updates feature new Emoji icons including a phoenix and mushroom, a podcasts transcription feature, a handful of bug fixes and security updates, along with some minor additions and changes. European users also gain some specific new capabilities that allow them to add apps from outside the App Store, but users outside the EU zone will not have those options.

Separately, macOS Sonoma 14.4, watchOS 14.4, tvOS 14.4, and visionOS 1.1 are not yet available, but are expected to launch in the near future.

How to Download & Install iOS 17.4 / iPadOS 17.4 Update

You will want to make sure that you backup the iPhone or iPad to iCloud or a computer before starting the software update. Doing so makes sure you do not lose your data in the rare event that something goes wrong.

  • Open the “Settings” app on iPhone or iPad
  • Go to “General”
  • Select “Software Update”
  • Choose to “Update Now” for iOS 17.4 / iPadOS 17.4 to start the download and update process

iOS 17.4 update

Installing iOS 17.4 or iPadOS 17.4 requires the iPhone or iPad to restart, as usual.

You can also update your iPhone or iPad by connecting your device to a computer with Finder, or iTunes, or the newer Apple Devices app in Windows.

Advanced users can also use IPSW files to update their devices manually, though there’s little reason to take that approach for the majority of users.

Apple Tweaks New EU App Store Business Terms After Developer Feedback

With the launch of iOS 17.4, Apple's app ecosystem changes in the European Union have gone into effect. Apple today said that it made some last minute updates to its terms of service after receiving feedback from developers.

App Store vs EU Feature 2

Apple says that developers have a one-time option to terminate the new rule addendum [ PDF ] and swap back to Apple's standard business terms, though there is a catch. Developers who want to change back cannot have distributed an app through an alternative app marketplace or have used an alternative payment processing method.

You may terminate this Addendum without also terminating the Developer Agreement one time, provided You have never had an Application be an Alternative App Marketplace (EU), be distributed through an Alternative App Marketplace (EU), use Linking Out, or use Alternative Payment Processing.

Opt-out will be available for developers who decided to continue to distribute their apps through the App Store while adopting the Core Technology Fee and reduced commission option. The CTF is .50 euros per download after 1 million downloads, and the commission is 13 percent for small business owners and 20 percent for installs over 1 million (this includes the ‌App Store‌ payment processing fee).

Developers who want to create an alternative app marketplace can now do so without a stand-by letter of credit for €1,000,000, which would restrict marketplace creation to large companies. Developers who have been a member of good standing in the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more and have an app that had more than one million first annual installs in iOS in the EU in the prior calendar year can create a marketplace without the proof of funds.

There is also no longer a corporate entity requirement when signing up for new terms, so a large business can sign up at the developer account level rather than having to have each controlling membership approve the swap to the updated business terms.

With iOS 17.4 released, we should soon be seeing the first alternative app marketplaces launch. Developers are now free to adopt the new business terms, distribute their apps outside of the ‌App Store‌, and use third-party payments in their apps. Note that all of these changes are limited to developers and users in the European Union.

You continuing to call it "malicious compliance" doesn't make it so. Not liking how something was done doesn't mean it was malicious. Otherwise, with that bs logic, I would absolutely say the EU mandate is malicious!

Safari opening new window instead of tab when working with tab groups

When I have a Safari window with a tab group open and I click on a link in an email, Safari opens a new window instead of opening a new tab in the existing window. This is extremely annoying and contrary to the preferences where I told Safari to "Always" open pages in a new tab. To me this seems like a bug but if someone has an idea how to prevent this I would be glad!

  • Why do links from outside Safari open in new windows when I'm in a Tab Group? When I have a Tab Group focused and click on a link outside Safari (ex. in Slack), it opens in a new window instead of as a tab in the existing window. This is only an issue when I'm in a tab group. If I'm in the ungrouped tabs I have open and click an external link, it opens in that existing window as expected. Links within Safari also work as expected (i.e. cmd+click opens in a new tab within whatever Group I'm in). Is there any way to force links from outside Safari to open as ungrouped tabs in the existing window? It looks like you're having issues with Safari opening a new window instead of a tab. If that's correct, let's try the following.

Does this continue to happen when in safe mode?

Nov 22, 2021 11:07 AM in response to JCorHelps

The issue seems to be the new tab groups. When I am in a tab that is in a tab group and then click on a link in an email, it opens in a new window. Then I am in the standard space, it opens as expected in a new tab.

  1. window.open ('', '_blank') doesn't open new tab on iOS only

The only way to do it using the onClick Handler. In my usecase, I was needing to fetch the URL through an API call. Safari blocks the window.open() if there's anything else happening inside the onClick. The workaround I did is to use a state to manage my URL, dynamically update it based on other dependencies with the help of useEffet().

  2. window.open (url, '_blank'); not working on iMac/Safari
