Though the boat affords up-close views of the coast, it doesn't protect against sea spray and is not equipped with a restroom, so keep that in mind when booking.

The two-hour tours depart Monday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Tickets cost approximately $199 per person, and a maximum of 18 passengers are permitted on board. Due to the more adventurous nature of this tour, it's not recommended for children younger than 4 years old, pregnant people or those with back or neck issues. If you're hoping to explore in the water, consider the company's four-hour snorkeling tour.

Capt Andy’s

  • Staff review

Few boat tour providers have as stellar a reputation as Capt Andy's--for good reason. They make exploring the Na Pali Coast a seamless experience, whether you're up for an all-day adventure or a shorter rafting expedition. Expect knowledgeable guides, well-above-average customer service, and absolutely stunning views, no matter which tour you choose.

Kauai’s Na Pali coastline features some of the highest sea cliffs in the world, intricately carved through by narrow valleys, waterfalls, and streams. Experience it from the water via a beautifully planned boat tour, and you’ll leave with the memories (and photographs!) of a lifetime. Capt Andy’s has a stellar reputation as a tour provider, and thanks to the wide variety of tour options they offer, there’s something for practically every traveler–from adventure-seekers to casual sightseers to foodies just in it for the Hawaiian-style BBQ.

Expect well-maintained vessels, exceedingly accommodating guides, and an unforgettable experience from booking to debarkation.

Some of our favorite tour options include:

The Na Pali Snorkel BBQ Sail  Want to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous coastline as well as the wonders under the surface? The Snorkel BBQ Sail spans 5.5 hours of the day. Because it departs in the morning, you’re all but guaranteed to catch a glimpse of spinner dolphins frolicking along the coastline. Bring a swimsuit along, because later in the morning, you’ll have a chance to jump in yourself. At lunchtime, enjoy a delectable BBQ lunch prepared on board–complete with dessert, beverages, beer, and wine. You’ll have plenty of room on the 65′ yacht to enjoy the sunshine or the shade, relax, and enjoy the adventure.

N a Pali Day Expedition  This 5-6 hour adventure along the Na Pali coast culminates in snorkeling on a secluded secret beach, exploring the ruins of an ancient Hawaiian village, and taking in sea caves, jungle hiking trails, and waterfalls along the way. This trip occurs on a custom-made 24′ raft that allows for secluded beach landings. Enjoy snorkeling, the occasional humpback whale sighting (if your trip falls during whale season), and a picnic lunch with desserts and beverages.

Na Pali Cave Patrol  A shorter expedition that’s just as spellbinding, the Na Pali Cave Patrol trip lasts about three hours and takes you in and out of sea caves and even under waterfalls that look like they came straight out of a storybook. The sheer height of the cliffs and the contrast of the bluer-than-blue waters and emerald cliffs will leave you reeling with the beauty of the place, even as you explore some of the nooks and crannies that most visitors to the Na Pali Coast don’t ever get to see.

Other tours include a sunset dinner tour, a snorkel adventure, and a picnic sail–all of which come highly recommended by visitors who return year after year to rebook with Capt Andy’s.

Capt Andy’s tours is located in Eleele, with most tours departing from Port Allen on Kauai’s South Shore; they’re easily accessible from most parts of the island, but keep in mind that if you’re coming from the North Shore, you’re in for a drive of just under two hours.

Insider Tips: -Capt Andy’s doesn’t provide shuttle service to or from your accommodations, so arranging transportation to the correct harbor is on you. Plan in advance, because it’s a 1:45 drive from the North Shore.  -Even though it’s Hawaii, you might want to bring a jacket along–especially if you’re going on a rafting tour. The cool tradewinds and sea spray can make it feel a bit chilly, especially in the mornings.  -Traveling with younger adventurers? Keep in mind that children must be 6 years old to go on a rafting tour and at least 3 for a catamaran tour.

How to Choose the Best Na Pali Boat Tour (& Napali Sunset Cruise Review)

I visited Kauai in early January 2022 and one of my favourite activities was the Napali sunset cruise. Not only did the Na Pali sunset cruise provide some of the best photo opportunities on Kauai, but it was also a fun experience.

Seeing the Na Pali Coast was a priority of mine when visiting Kauai, amongst many other exceptional activities on the island. A Na Pali catamaran tour is one of the activities that should be in your Kauai itinerary , even if you are only visiting Kauai for 3 days .

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most spectacular places to see in Kauai.

Na Pali Coast Boat Tour Kauai

The name “Na Pali” comes from the Hawaiian word for “cliffs”. The Na Pali cliffs are a result of millions of years of volcanic eruptions and erosion.

They are also the result of the strong winter waves on the North Shore. More so, trade winds and landslides have contributed to the formation of the Na Pali Coast, giving it its distinct look.

Read my Kauai travel blog post to find out the other must-do activities in Kauai .

When doing my own research for Kauai boat tours, I had several questions I wanted answering before booking one of the cruises. Now that I have been on a Napali Coast sunset dinner cruise, I have plenty of information to share.

Read this Kauai packing list article to learn about what to wear in Kauai for all of your activities and dinners.

How to Choose a Na Pali Boat Tour in Kauai?

There are so many different options for seeing the Na Pali Coast, it can be hard to choose which one. Your choice of Kauai boat tours will depend on different priorities, for example, seasickness, photography, snorkelling, wildlife, and meals.

For the true adrenaline fans, you may consider booking a Na Pali Coast rafting tour .

If you are looking for other water-based adventures in Kauai, you will love the kayaking and hiking adventure to Secret Falls .

Time of The Day

Calm seas at Na Pali Coast Kauai

Most boat tour companies offer a morning tour that includes snorkelling, a light breakfast, and lunch . They also may sell a Napali coast sunset cruise with a BBQ dinner .

Na Pali Coast boat tours usually last around 4 to 7 hours, with the morning excursions typically lasting longer than the sunset cruises.

You may be lucky enough to see dolphins all year round, but mornings tend to be the better time of day to see dolphins. Mornings also typically see calmer seas.

Alternatively, the lighting to photograph the Na Pali Coast tends to be better in the afternoon. So, you should pick your priorities.

Combining a morning exploring Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park with a Na Pali sunset dinner cruise would be a great way to get to know the island of Kauai.

Departure Points for Na Pali Coast Boat Tours

Something important to note when booking your Na Pali Coast boat tour is that tours depart from different locations even though they are going to the same place.

Tours depart from the North Shore and West/Southwest Kauai in summer. Plus, in the summer or during calm conditions, you can snorkel and visit caves along the coast. Some companies offer sunset snorkel tours, but this is rare in winter.

Whale watching Napali Coast Kauai

Boat rides only start from Port Allen in Eleele in winter – where the season typically goes from mid-September to mid-May.

The waters are too rough to depart from the North in the winter so they depart further down the coast.

To get to Port Allen, it is a long drive from the North Shore of Kauai because you must drive around the whole island. There is no road directly from the North to the West of Kauai.

Consider the location of your accommodation on Kauai when booking a Na Pali coast tour in winter. You should either schedule your boat tour while on the South Shore or be willing to make the long drive over.

You will need a rental car while on Kauai – book a discounted Hawaii rental car here.

Flexibility When Booking a Napali Boat Tour

You should book your Na Pali Coast boat tour during the beginning of your trip in the event it is rescheduled due to bad weather. In winter, this is a common occurrence.

My original boat tour was booked for early in my trip in January 2022, but it was cancelled due to the torrential rain and storm surge we were experiencing. However, we were able to go a few days later and the sea conditions were perfect, and we had incredible weather.

A benefit of a winter Na Pali Coast boat tour is that you may see Humpback Whales. We saw several whales during our sunset sail, and it was incredible.

Which Boat is Best For a Na Pali Coast Tour?

Southern Star Capt Andy's Na Pali Coast boat tour Kauai

Hopefully, the above sections have helped you decide which type of Napali Coast tour is right for you, out of morning and evening, and winter and summer.

Once you have made this choice, you need to decide on the type of boat. There are boats such as zodiacs/rafts and varying sizes of catamarans.

I chose the Star Dinner Sunset Sail with Capt Andy’s, which uses a 65′ luxury catamaran. The benefit of a large catamaran is that it does not feel the bumps of the waves as much as a raft does. Additionally, there is more space to spread out around the boat, so it is not too cramped.

I chose not to do a Na Pali snorkel tour because I wanted to go on an afternoon tour that would offer optimal light to view and photograph the coast. As I mentioned, the morning tours are those that offer the snorkelling.

Napali Sunset Cruise Review

Polihale State Park beach Kauai

As I mentioned previously, I went on Captain Andy’s Napali Sunset Dinner Cruise (Star), and it was an incredible experience. The Na Pali sunset tour was well organised and the crew were faultless.

As we set off on our way towards the Na Pali Coast the crew started serving beverages, such as wine, Sneaky Tikis (similar to Mai Tais) and soft drinks.

On this Na Pali Coast sunset cruise, you will enjoy the views of Niihau, another Hawaiian island, as you leave the port and head up the coast.

Along the way, you pass Polihale State Park, which is a beach only accessed by 4x4s on a remote dirt road. Therefore, the boat ride provides a unique opportunity to see Polihale Beach that is normally difficult to access.

There was plenty of space on the catamaran for those who wanted to sit at the calmer back of the boat and for those who did not mind the bumps and getting wet at the front.

Upon approaching the Na Pali Coast on this Kauai sunset sail, the captain will tell stories of the area so you can learn about movies filmed there and the coast’s history. This point in the journey is the moment to get your cameras out as you pass closely by the Na Pali Coast and then on the way back you may get a panoramic view.

Napali coast Kauai

The scenery is unlike anything you will have ever witnessed and certainly something you will remember for years to come. The jagged rocks frame the white sand beaches at the foot of its lush valley.

As you leave the Na Pali Coast behind, dinner is served and the sun will begin to set. The view of the sunset around Kauai is stunning from the boat because there is nothing for miles around, except for Niihau Island and Kauai’s impressive coastline.

The boat will dock shortly after sunset and that is the end of your Kauai sunset cruise to the Na Pali Coast.

From my experience, Captain Andy’s sunset cruise is one of the best Napali Coast boat tours you can book. I highly recommend the Na Pali Coast sunset dinner cruise with Captain Andy’s.

Advice for Napali Coast Boat Tour

Na Pali Coast valley up close Kauai

Make sure you have a few backup dates during your stay in Kauai where you could reschedule your Na Pali sunset cruise, or other Kauai catamaran tours, in case of cancellation. It was one of the highlights of my holiday and I would have been upset to miss out.

In regards to seasickness, we all took a Bonine motion sickness tablet an hour before our boat tour. As a result, no one in my group of 5 felt seasick. Although, we were extremely lucky to have relatively calm seas on our Na Pali sunset boat cruise.

The weather was so bad in the first few days of our trip causing our initial Captain Andy’s Napali sunset dinner   cruise to be cancelled. Luckily, Capt Andy’s allows you to reschedule free of charge and book on another Na Pali catamaran ride or raft excursion with them.

A great place to stop for lunch before a sunset boat cruise is Porky’s. This Kauai restaurant is close to Port Allen for winter departures and serves tasty food, quickly.

You may still be hungry after a sunset dinner cruise since the food offering is late. Therefore, you may wish to head to one of the restaurants in Poipu for some more food. Consider restuarants, such as Brennecke’s Beach Broiler or Stevenson’s Library, or grab a quick snack from Puka Dog or Bubba Burgers.

Capt Andy’s Tour Review (Kauai)

Capt Andy’s Tour Review (Kauai)

One of the suggestions that came highly recommended by our travel agent for our Kauai trip was that we see the Na Pali coast during our stay. The Na Pali coast is located on the Northwest coast of Kauai and is quite a beautiful sight with its beautiful waterfalls, rugged caves, sun-kissed beaches, and towering cliffs.

There are many tour companies that can take you to the coast with boat tours, but after extensive research, we decided on Captain Andy’s Raft & Snorkel Tour of the Na Pali Coast. They seemed to have the most positive reviews and offered the type of adventurous rafting tour we were looking for.

Booking was really simple on Captain Andy’s website. You can filter by dates, time of day, and number of guests. From there, you can browse the tours that fit your criteria. They offer everything from easy-going sunset boat tours , dinner cruises, snorkel tours, and picnic sails on catamarans, and for the adventurous type, rafting tours.

Dolphins in Capt Andys Na Pali Tour

The tours can vary from 2 to 6 hours, with some including meals and snacks. After browsing the options, we decided to do the Na Pali Raft Snorkel Adventure 4-hour tour. This expedition lets you get the closest to the cliffs (including going inside cliff sea caves), snorkeling, and high-speed adventure. This is not your mother’s tour but for thrill-seeking travelers! Since we were technically in the winter season (before May 15 th ), the price was $149 vs. $224 for summer pricing.

After booking, you receive an email confirmation and later additional information via email about the tour. They include the time of your tour, date, departure location with directions, a link to the waiver, ideas of what to bring, and a link to their FAQs.

They also send a 2-minute video overview that has views from the tours, check-in location and timing, a reminder to sign the waiver, suggestions on what to bring/wear, and a reminder that they provide dry bags to store your belongings.

They were also upfront in the video about how seriously they take safety. Weather may affect your trip, so they monitor the weather and may change the route or activities based on the conditions. If they do have to change the tour location due to weather, you are given the option to drop out.

What To Wear

Captain Andy’s recommends that you wear a swimsuit and bring a towel, a cover-up, and sunscreen. You will be swimming at times during this tour, so you definitely want a towel, but you can air dry pretty quickly too since it’s windy out there!

There are a couple of areas of your body that will rub on the rope handles or rafts, so if you have sensitive skin, I’d recommend also wearing additional clothing over your normal swimsuit. There are no shoes allowed on the boat. Shoes are stored before the boat leaves.

It’s extremely windy so I brought a water-resistant rain jacket and was really happy to have it for warmth since I’m someone who’s prone to being cold. If you want to take pictures, you can bring a camera or cell phone.

I have a loop on my phone case, so I felt comfortable taking it out of the dry bag for pictures despite the bumpy ride. I also saw people with those plastic phone cases connected to a lanyard around their necks which would be a great idea too.

Kylee and Husband on Capt Andys Tour

Check-in begins 30 minutes prior to your departure at the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor in Kekahana. There is a large dirt parking lot, and folks will start to gather under the pavilion for the tour. We were greeted right away by our captain (Shoutout to Captain Chase!) who checked us in and gave us a dry bag for our belongings.

While we waited for the rest of the group to arrive, we loaded our dry bag with our things and used the nearby restroom. When loading your dry bag, I recommend putting things you will want access to first on top and stuff you won’t need at all at the bottom.

For example, put wallets and car keys at the bottom, then towels and cell phones since you may want to use the phones often for pictures. After the entire group gathered, we were given a weather update, tour overview, and safety overview. As we headed to the boat, we were reminded that this tour was rough.

You reach speeds of over 30mph and hit huge waves straight on in a small raft. There were 12 of us in the group, plus the captain and a deckhand. The front is a bumpier ride, and the back is a bit smoother so choose your seat wisely. We sat 6 on each side “sidesaddle” on the raft.

Sidesaddle means you have one leg up on the side of the raft and your inside leg on the ground of the raft. Your inside foot is tucked under a rope for safety, though our captain assured us he’s never had anyone fall off. There are parallel ropes on either side that you can hold on to. Hold on tight because it’s a bumpy ride!

Start of The Tour

We got situated as we left the harbor, and as soon as we hit open water, we were off! Our captain hit the gas as we passed over a huge wave that lifted us out of our seats. The soundtrack our captain played was a great mix of upbeat jams and hard rock that really pumped us up.

I had Blur- Song 2 (Woohoo) stuck in my head for days after. We flew by Polihale beach at high speed, with music blaring and wind pelting our faces. The captain was making sure we had a great experience, hitting waves, doing donuts, and at one point racing a flock of birds that was traveling along the coastline.

We learned that the Hawaiian word “Na Pali” translates to “The Cliffs”. And wow, the cliffs in the Na Pali Coast did not disappoint. Towering hundreds of feet above our heads, the massive cliffs and valleys were beautifully illuminated by the rising sun.

Sea Caves

The rafting expedition offers much more than just rafting along the coastline. You pass by beautiful waterfalls that begin hundreds of feet up in the mountains and pour down the cliffs until they hit the water right beside the boat. I was holding my breath as the talented captain maneuvered our raft inside small sea caves despite the massive crashing waves pushing our boat around. There is simply no other way to see these majestic caves.

The other boats are too big to fit, and you would never be able to swim against the current. It was incredible. We stopped every so often to rest our hands which were holding on tight during the ride. My knuckles got a bit beat up, and we were incredibly sore all over during and after the expedition. My husband and I are in our early 30s and are fairly athletic, so this adventure is no joke!

You are white-knuckling that rope handle the entire way. During our stops, the captain would turn the boat so we could get great pictures. Sometimes we jumped in and swam in the crystal-clear water of the Na Pali Coast. It was warmer than expected and you can see down all the way to the sandy bottom of the ocean.

Snacks and drinks are provided as part of it. The staff gave us some delicious homemade granola bars, bags of chips, water, and soda. We were unable to go snorkeling at the designated location due to the water conditions. Although this was disappointing, I appreciated our captain putting our safety first, and the rest of the tour was incredibly fun regardless.

Dolphins by the boat

We were also able to see a variety of wildlife. We saw turtles swimming alongside our boat as well as resting on the beaches that we passed by. We spotted a monk seal resting ashore as well. At one point, we encountered a pod of spinner dolphins. The captain told us a lot about these native dolphins that live in Kauai. They are a smaller breed of dolphins, and many of the ones we saw were actually sleeping.

We learned that they sleep in shifts. So while some of the sleeping dolphins swam by us, passing only a few feet from our idling boat, we could see others about 30 feet away jumping and playing. We were extremely lucky to see whales on our journey as well.

Being early May, the whale watching season is at its end and most whales have left Kauai already.

Dolphins jumping out of water

However, the captain spotted a large breech from a distance, and we rode over to get a closer look. We stopped the boat and watched the gigantic mama whale and her young calf for a while. The mother did not breach again, but the baby put on a little show for us, coming about 100 feet from our raft and practicing its breaching a few times.

Other Tours By Capt Andy’s

We had an absolute blast on Captain Andy’s Na Pali Raft Snorkel Adventure. However, keep in mind this tour is not for everyone. I would not recommend this tour to the elderly or anyone with physical conditions, and it may be a little intense for small children. But don’t worry, if this is not the tour for you, Captain Andy’s offers several other boat tours that will fit your needs.

The Dinner Sunset Sail is a good choice for those looking to enjoy an unforgettable dinner with views in a relaxing setting. You can also choose their Na Pali Snorkel Picnic Sail if you just want to go snorkeling without the hard conditions of being on a raft.

However, for the thrill-seeking adventurers who don’t mind getting a little banged up in order to see the absolute best views of the Na Pali coast, this tour will be the highlight of your trip to Kauai!

Tour the Na Pali Coast with Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most special places on Kaua’i. Along the North-West coast, these rugged cliffs offer grand views of valleys, caves and waterfalls winding their way to ocean depths below. In order to protect this beautiful terrain, Na Pali can only be seen one of three ways. The first is hiking through it’s trails, the second is by air and the third is by sea.

One of the great things about choosing to take in the coast by sea is that you can really take in the grandeur from the unique perspective a boat offers. I was able to experience the beautiful Na Pali coast by sea thanks to Captain Andy’s Star Na Pali Snorkel, BBQ, and Sail Tour ; which offers much more than just a scenic view. Captain Andy’s has been sailing and rafting on the Na Pali and around Kaua’i since 1980 and offers numerous expeditions.

Na Pali Coast Tours

We were on board the Northern Star, a 65’sailing yacht, by 9:30am and set off from Port Allen on the west shore of Kaua’i as we enjoyed a continental breakfast. We were set on a course that took us near the shore with views of Niihau, Polihale and the ridges of Kokee. Taking a nearshore route up the coast allows for spectacular views of sea cliffs, numerous waterfalls and lava tubes.

Na Pali Coast Tours 3

It wasn’t long before magical things started to happen. First a rainbow appeared.

Na Pali Coast Tours

And then a pod of dolphins began playing near our boat. It was about this time that it all seemed too good to be true. Thankfully, it wasn’t – for everyone except me.  Unbeknownst to me, I am prone to sea sickness. Less than an hour into the trip, right around the time we stopped to snorkel, I realized that I was terribly, horribly sea sick. Unfortunately, I was able to only just see the beginning of the Na Pali coast but what I did get to witness was beautiful.

Na Pali Coast Tours 1

The rest of the crew, who were fortunate enough not to get sea sick, were treated to some spectacular views like the ones below (photo credit Captain Andy’s) as we made our way up the coast.

As lunch concluded we made our way back to Port Allen with more stunning views of the coast.

The Kauai Visitors Bureau covered my expenses during this trip, all opinions are my own.

Great views, and a relaxing way to see the islands. I’ve been to the Big Island and Oahu. This is just one more reason to visit Kaua’i.

Captain Andy vs Kauai Sea Tours

We took Captain Andy's Raft trip in Sept 2015 when on a Hawaiian get away with my siblings and spouses. We had such a great time, we decided to take our adult children this year. We won a raffle at our condo for a discount on Kauai Sea tours so went with them this year. Our captain and first mate was great, but the overall tour in comparison with Captain Andy's was lacking. Captain Andy's went in more sea caves, and went all the way to Kee Beach, whereas Kauai Sea Tours stopped at Kalalau beach. On the whole trip there were 3 memorable sea caves. Kauai Sea Tours only did 1 of those 3. For this reason, I am rating Captain Andy's a 5 and Kauai Sea Tours a 3. Which ever company you choose, make sure to ask how far up the coast they go.

Unbelievable and fantastic cruise. We were skeptical in the beginning because the price was a little high and without any recommendation but we were glad that we went ahead and did it. The view was spectacular. We were able to see dolphins, double rainbows (a little rain from the hurricane that just passed us to the North). The filet mignon steak and shrimp cooked to perfection. The crews were very nice and tentative. The captain (Corry) was funny and entertaining. Did I forget to mention it is an open bar cruise. :}

I have wanted to see the Na'Poli coast from the water since my first visit to the island in 2012. Captain Andy's didn't disappoint. Staff was attentive and informative even though there was one demanding and demeaning guest requiring far more time and attention than she deserved (I would have considered requiring her to "swim"). The captain and staff remained gracious and service was far better than expected. The price was reasonable and even though my receipt said that gratuities were not included, we had to force the money in the captain's hand at the end of the evening. No tip jars could be found and there was no announcement that tips would be appreciated as is usual for these types of excursions. Tasteful and gracious. A great experience.

We have been selecting Captain Andy's since 2000. We started coming to the island in 1998. We come every other year. Once we found Captain Andy's catamaran cruise on the Napali Coastline we make it a must every time we are on Kauai. The captain of the Northern Star had been the captain on our cruise in 2012. The crew are excellent. Friendly, but always safety concious for the guests. Most of the crew have served for a long time. It is a great company from what we have observed. Great fun to lay on the netting between the hulls and take the rise and fall and get wet! Dolphins and flying fish dart in front and to the sides. Saw a pod of about 60 dolphins. The snorkeling is great fun and the food is most filling after all the sailing and snorkeling. Our hats are off to Captian Andy, his crew and his crafts. They also offer other adventures and a sunset cruise.

We went on the Na Pali Coast Snorkel, Hike and Picnic tour on August 27, 2016. Captain Nicole and Iki made sure we had an exciting and safe adventure along the beautiful Na Pali coastline. Captain Nicole has amazing skills. The Kodiak raft in the Pacific Ocean is an experience in itself. Your seat is the edge of the raft and waves and wind are constant. You put one of your bare feet under a floor rope and use both of your hands to (tightly) hold ropes running around the edge of the raft. You'll be given a large plastic dry-bag to keep your things dry. You won't be able to keep a hat on so make sure you use plenty of sunblock on your head before leaving and reapply when you stop for lunch. You may consider taking a sea sickness preventive before you board. A couple of people got sick. We stopped at a state beach park that is only accessible by boat. They provided an awesome hot lunch. Iki gave us an interesting tour of an ancient Hawaiian village. They provided snorkeling equipment to use near the beach area. We saw a large pod of spinning dolphins right next to the raft. Captain Nicole stopped the raft so we could enjoy them. We also saw a couple of sea turtles swim up to the raft. Nicole took the raft inside of a few sea caves. I saw the Na Pali coastline from a cruise ship the first time which is an awesome experience. The raft experience gives the up close and personal experience. This was a great trip. Be prepared to have a few sore muscles the next day. Definitely worth it.

This tour is fantastic. Not only do you get to see the beautiful Na Pali coast close up but you get to snorkel, see dolphins and other wildlife. The staff were very professional and knowledgeable about the area. We had a great time. I highly recommend you put Captain Andy's Sailing Adventure on your "to do" list.

We are narrowing down our decision for a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast between those 3 outfits.

Which one should we pick and why, based on your direct experience?

We have our kids with us as well.

Thanks for all your feedback.

' class=

We did the Southern Star and the zodiac boats both with Captain Andy's. We thoroughly enjoyed both. The zodiacs go fast, you get tossed around and they go in and out of caves. The SS was more luxurious and the dinner was good too.

' class=

The big difference is between Captain Andy's new Southern Star which is in a class by itself. And about $20 more per person. Worth it though.

kauai sea tours vs captain andy

We took the large power catamaran with Holo Holo in 2004. I was not impressed with the boat, the crew or the service. It was fine and we all had a nice time. I did not like not being able to sail. The engine was on the entire time and the fumes started to get to me. We the took Captain andy's in 2008 and the difference (IMO) was like night and day. Great crew, clean, comfortable boat and fabulous service. I'm looking forward to trying The Southern Star next summer.

Well HoloHolo must have more than one boat because I've sailed with HoloHolo on their 50 ft. Leila catamaran. Motor on most of the way going but sailed back.

Not sure which boat we were on. It was big but not a sailing vessel. We're sailors so we prefer being able to turn off the engine and sail part of the way, which we did on Captain Andy's in 2008. I also remember that Holo Holo did not allow children under the age of 7 so we ended up getting a sitter for the kids (both of my boys were under 7 at the time). Once we boarded the Holo Holo boat, I totally understood their policy. That particular boat was not set up for children at all.

The raft ride was exhilarating but surprisingly comfortable. It rained a bit but they were ready with rain jackets. It only added to the fun and quickly passed. We saw tons of spinner dolphins, went into a cave and did a fun turn-about, and snorkeled on our way back. Highly recommend.

I have hiked Napali for years, but this was the first time via water and it was amazing! A MUST SEE & DO for those wanting a more adventurous and remote experience. Great crew and captain- good vibes, history, stories & views. I'll be back to book another trip! Thanks for some valuable memories and experiences.

I’m a Custom-Adventure-Tour guide on Kauai. I specialize in only the best. Even though I live on Kauai, I still take a catamaran tour of Na Pali coast at least once a year. This company offers the best catamaran tour available! If you can, make sure to book a tour that has Captain Kauai at the helm, as he is the best of the best. Aloha!

My first time snorkeling and I had a blast! The crew was personable, professional, and even offered me prescription goggles. This was a solo activity for me and I met some very nice people. Everyone had a great time. I saw dolphins, a tortoise, and fish that I used to have in my fish tank some years back. I look forward to doing it again on my next trip!

Picturesque views of the coast, great information on the history of the area, and amazing wildlife! We saw too many whales to count, turtles and spinner dolphins. The crew provided a fun and safe experience for people of all ages. There were several people on the boat that had been on the same tour multiple times before.

This was probably my favorite of all the tours I did in Kauai (..and I did a lot!).Very fun and upbeat, but also relaxing. We saw so many whales and lots of spinner dolphins. The views are second to none. We couldn’t do the Na Pali Coast due to high winds and waves. So worth your time to do this tour!Shout out to the captain and crew...you guys ROCKED!

The tour and snorkeling were great, but what made this a memorable trip was the amazing crew! Their knowledge and service was impeccable and amongst the best I've seen (we make it a point to tour/snorkel everywhere we go around the world). Perfect balance of safety and experience. Thank you crew, I highly recommend Kauai Sea Tours!

We had an excellent time! Would recommend for sure when visiting Kauai. Captain Greg and our crew were amazing. We were re-routed the day of our trip due to high winds and not safely getting us to Napali, but they still made the trip memorable and fun! Scenery and wildlife were the best, would've been happy with just that.

To be completely honest with you, we weighed the pros and cons of each tour in Kauai because we were trying to stick to a budget. We knew that seeing the Na Pali Coast by boat would be cool, but we were not prepared for the unbelievable experience that we ended up having with Capt. Andy`s. If I could give you just one piece of advice while traveling to Kauai, it would be this: Sign yourself up for the  Star Na Pali Snorkel BBQ Sail with Capt. Andy`s  immediately!  You are going to absolutely love it, and here`s why.

Exploring the na pali coast.

This stunning area is known to be one of the most beautiful shorelines in the entire world and it’s easy to see why during a Na Pali Coast tour! Picture this: clear blue waves rolling into white sand beaches surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Lush, green ridges up to 4,000 feet high sprinkled with powerful waterfalls and scenic rivers. All in a protected area with no infrastructure, no roads, and barely any people. This place is paradise!

The Hawaiian Government along with the local community have worked very hard to protect this 17 mile stretch along Kauai’s North Shore. The ecosystem is fragile and it’s important to respect the land as well as the wildlife living in the area. Fun fact: Dozens of movies have been shot along this coast including Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean!

The Catamaran

Nothing beats cruising in comfort and  Capt. Andy’s  65′ Star Catamaran is nothing short of luxurious. We felt like impostors who had snuck onto a celebrity’s private yacht and should be kicked off any minute…  seriously.  The boat offers two large bathrooms, an air-conditioned indoor bar/lounge area, an outdoor dining area, padded benches, and a BBQ area. Our favourite part was the large trampoline nets on the bow where you can sprawl out and soak up some sun! It’s a perfect place to spot the spinner dolphins that like to play in the surf below. The snorkel platform at the back of the catamaran made it super easy to get in and out of the water and they even had hot water showers to rinse off afterwards!

Even when the winds pick up and the ocean gets choppy, this boat handles well. With that being said, seasickness is a   day-ruiner  so we always take Gravol before tours like this. The catamaran capacity is around 40 people, but we were super lucky to visit on a day where there was only 21 of us!

One of the many reasons travellers choose a Na Pali Coast tour is because of the diverse wildlife both on land and in the sea. During the winter months, the warm waters surrounding the Hawaiian islands turn into breeding and birthing grounds for humpback whales. During these months whale sightings are almost guaranteed – we saw over a dozen whales during this tour! Spinner dolphins, monk seals, and green sea turtles are also incredibly common year round. You might even get lucky and see a manta ray (like we did!), sharks, or other species of whales.

kauai sea tours vs captain andy

The Na Pali Coast tour offers some amazing snorkelling opportunities and Capt. Andy knows some of the best spots. During the tour, your captain will pick a great snorkel location at the time based on tides and weather. High quality snorkel gear will be provided but if you prefer using your own, that’s okay too. Chances of seeing sea turtles and tons of tropical fish are very high. If you’re really lucky, a pod of dolphins or even a manta ray might just cruise by! Make sure to bring a rash guard to avoid a sun burn and pack a towel to dry off after that warm shower.

The  Star Na Pali Snorkel BBQ Sail  offers muffins and coffee upon check-in followed by a small but delicious buffet-style breakfast. For us, this included apple cinnamon-baked oatmeal squares (GF and Vegan), Greek yogurt, fresh fruit trays, fruit juice, coffee, and tea. We were able to help ourselves to this fantastic spread at our leisure throughout the morning! After we finished snorkelling, beer and wine were served by the lovely crew.

For the lunch BBQ, we had a choice between a grilled chicken breast or a beef burger on a homemade bun. It was accompanied by coleslaw and baked beans and all the food was fantastic! Capt. Andy’s is great at working with any dietary restrictions, just make sure to give them a heads up when you book!

kauai sea tours vs captain andy

The crew on this boat tour was absolutely exceptional! Right from the start, each member was friendly and accommodating, making us feel at home as soon as we stepped foot on the catamaran. Capt. Andy’s crew was also very knowledgeable and shared a ton of information regarding not only the coastline but the entire island of Kauai. They got just as excited as we did about the wildlife and had a sharp eye for spotting whales in the distance!

Towards the end of our cruise, the captain dropped the sail and we enjoyed a relaxing sail back to the harbour. This was the perfect time to bask in the sun, chill out on the trampolines and enjoy the open bar!

Capt. Andy’s Star Na Pali Snorkel BBQ Sail was one of our favourite adventures during our time in Kauai and we would absolutely recommend that you experience it for yourself! Please feel free to contact us with any questions regarding the tour or  share your experience below. We’d love to hear from you!

I truly enjoyed the journey along the coast for the most part. The captain and crew were attentive and the information about the area and the wildlife was awesome. The history of the coast was given as we approached each nook and directions referred to as you would the face of a clock. The swells were rough and led to several people getting sick, including my daughter who was miserable and wanted the tour to end. We didn’t partake of the cocktails or the food. The crew made to take out plates of the food for us to take. If I had known the journey would be so rough we wouldn’t have done it. Thanks to the crew!

What's the difference between the two Na Pali Snorkel Sails?

The difference in the two snorkel sailing tours is that they are on two different boats, with two different meals. However, they both check in at the same time, at the same place, go to the same location, and are about 5 ½ hours long.

Our Classic Na Pali Snorkel Picnic Sail is a 5 ½ hour tour on our 55' Gold Coast Catamaran - the Akialoa. It includes a wonderful catered lunch including sandwich with a side and fresh baked cookies for dessert.

The 5 ½ Hour Star Na Pali Snorkel BBQ Sail is under the heading "65' Star Class Catamarans." These are our newest boats, our 65’ Gold Coast Yachts. The Stars are slightly larger with beautiful floors, tiled bathrooms, granite countertops and a chef onboard—she’s really what you’d picture a yacht to be! We provide a hot BBQ lunch for everyone on the vessel. We also serve freshly made coleslaw and baked beans, and freshly baked cookies for dessert. Both trips are amazing, the Star is just a luxury upgrade!

What's the difference between the two Na Pali Dinner Sails?

The difference in the two dinner sailing tours is that they are on two different boats, with two different meals. However, they both check in at the same time, at the same place, go to the same location, and are about 4 ½ hours long.

Our Classic Na Pali Sunset Dinner Sail is a 4 hour tour on our 55’ Gold Coast Catamaran — the Akialoa. It includes a wonderful catered, hot dinner with grilled chicken, grilled beef, green salad, rice pilaf, grilled asparagus and cheesecake for dessert.

The Star Na Pali Dinner Sunset Sail is a 4 hour tour on our 65’ Gold Coast luxury sailing Catamaran. The Star is a slightly larger catamaran with beautiful floors, tiled bathrooms, granite countertops and a chef onboard—she’s really what you’d picture a luxury catamaran to be. We provide a Filet Mignon and Jumbo Shrimp dinner for everyone on the vessel. We also serve green salad, roasted potatoes and seasonal grilled vegetables, and the chef’s dessert choice of the day. Both trips are amazing, the Star is just a luxury upgrade!

What’s the difference between the catamaran and the rafting boats?

The catamarans are larger (55’ and 65’) and more stable in the water. You can walk around on the catamaran, and have access to restrooms and shade. The rafts are smaller (24’), faster and enable us to go into sea caves and land on a beach. You cannot walk around on the raft, and they are bouncy, wet, and wild with no restrooms or shade. The vessel is a 24 foot rigid hull inflatable raft. You will be sitting on the inflated sides of the raft, sidesaddle style.

How many people can the rafts hold?

The 24' rigid hull rafts hold up to 14 people

How many people can the catamarans hold?

The 65' Star Class Yacht and 55' Gold Coast Catamaran each hold 49 people.

Is one type of boat calmer than the others?

The catamarans are going to be calmer in the water and smoother sailing, as the rafts are bouncy, wet, and go very fast. For the catamarans, both our 55’ foot vessel and the 65’ foot vessel are the same as far as both being calm and stable in the sea. One catamaran is not better than the other for seasickness - the size does not matter.

What is a ride on the raft like?

Our rafting tours are great if you are interested in a smaller more adventurous boat tour that goes fast and gets wet. The rafts are much more physical and can be bumpy - you must comply with our medical restrictions to join us on this tour. Please see our medical restrictions below.

RAFT MEDICAL RESTRICTIONS - Due to the nature of the ride, Capt. Andy’s cannot accommodate people with – pregnancies, bad backs, bad shoulders, recent surgeries, bad hips, bad necks, and bad knees.

I’m not an experienced snorkeler/swimmer. Do you provide instructions and assistance in the water?

The caves are affected by ground swells and in most cases, the ground swells stay fairly equal throughout the day except when a new swell is either building or declining.

Can rafts always get into caves?

Not Always. In the summer months cave entry, nose first driving in, is usually possible on a regular basis. In the winter months it is less likely to have complete entry of all caves as the conditions tend to be rougher. While on the water the Captain will determine if it is safe to enter the caves.

Are there caves with waterfalls in them or over the front of them?

Yes, there are both and it is common to drive right through the waterfall getting everyone soaked.

Are there caves all along the coast and how many can the rafts gain entry on safe days?

There are 5 main caves. Wai’napanapa (a.k.a. Fertility Waterfall Cave), Puka Lani (a.k.a. Open Ceiling Cave), Na Kalo Wai (a.k.a. Garage Door Cave), Waieahukua (a.k.a. Two Door Cave), and Hooluu (a.k.a. Pirates Cave).

Yes, depending on how far into the cave we are able to explore, they can get dark.

Is there marine life in the caves?

Yes, we have seen monk seals, turtles, fish and even sharks inside the caves.

Are there times we do not get to all the caves?

Ideally, we want to show you the entire coast and you would see all the caves on a normal day. On occasions, the conditions get very windy and we decide to turn the boat with the wind at Kalalau - the most scenic area of the coast. If that happens we would not make it to the Two Door and Pirates Caves.

At times it can be rough, with strong winds, rain and large surf. At other times during our winter season we have wonderful weather, with little to no surf, calm winds, and beautiful sunshine. What can I do to prevent seasickness?

Take a seasickness preventative beforehand. While on the boat, make sure to have access to fresh air, and make sure you can see the horizon at all times. Also avoid the lower deck area and restrooms if you are feeling ill. Please inform our Captain and crew if you are feeling ill.

Do you sell seasickness preventatives?

Yes we do. We sell ginger products, Bonine (similar to Dramamine), and SeaBands( acupressure wristbands) in our Capt. Andy’s office.

What’s the best seasickness preventative?

There is no proven preventative to be better than the other, but our captains recommend taking Bonine or Dramamine. Ask your doctor what is best for you.

Do you sell seasickness preventatives on board?

I use a wheelchair, cane, crutches or a walker. am i able to use it on a tour.

Safety is our top priority at Capt Andy’s, and having fun on our tours is next! We want your experience to be comfortable, memorable and of course, fun! Choosing a tour that matches your physical ability is essential to creating an unforgettable experience. Your Captain will determine if it is safe for you to board the vessel and join the tour.

Our high-adrenaline rafting tours offer no shade or restrooms, and the ride is fast, bumpy and at times physically demanding. Boarding our rafts requires stepping down from the dock approximately two feet onto the inflated side of the raft. Passengers sit on the sides of the raft, hold on tight to a rope while underway, and all passengers must be able to climb a small ladder to board the raft after swimming or snorkeling. We are unable to accommodate passengers who require the use of a wheelchair, cane, crutches, walker or other assistive devices aboard our rafting tours.

Prior to boarding our catamarans, all passengers walk approximately ¼ mile from the office to the dock. Walking on our pitching and rolling boat decks during the tour can be considerably more challenging than walking on land, and the decks are not suitable surfaces for assistive walking devices. Should you choose to join a catamaran tour, assistive walking devices will be stored safely and securely on the dock during the tour. We ask passengers with reduced mobility to remain seated while the boat is underway, and please be aware that restrooms are located on a lower deck at the bottom of a ladder.

Choose a tour that is right for you, and have FUN!

medical, health, well being

Are you able to accommodate passengers that require oxygen tanks?

A person that requires the use of an oxygen tank is not a good candidate for our adventures.

I require an insulin pump - are these ok to bring on board?

We can accommodate guests with insulin pumps on our catamarans tours but not on our rafts.

Are pacemakers allowed on your tours?

Pacemakers are allowed on our tours, however, the passenger with the pacemaker should be in good enough physical health to travel to a remote location up to two hours from shore or any medical assistance.
