Driving in Belize

If you choose to rent a car in Belize, something to be aware of is that the country still has a developing infrastructure.

While main highways in Belize are in good shape, many secondary roads are in rough condition. For example, while the highway between Belize City and Placencia is well-maintained, many roads in Placencia are in poor shape with bumps and potholes, so you should be cautious when driving around town.

Tips for driving in Belize

As a traveler, you should come prepared and adjust your expectations. Don’t expect to find gas stations and convince stores on every corner and keep your tank full at all times.

Drive slowly, if the road looks rough, and download offline maps before traveling around because the GPS signal could drop off if you go to more remote areas.

✅ How to find Belize on the map

Additionally, road signs are not always present, and lighting is poor along the roads in many parts of Belize. To stay safe while driving in Belize, limit your trips to the daytime.

The drive takes an average of three hours depending on what road you take and how fast you drive.

What to know about taking a taxi in Belize

When catching a taxi ride from Belize City Airport, don’t expect a brand-new vehicle. Most taxi cabs that I’ve taken in Belize were pretty old, and not all had AC, so be ready for a less comfortable ride than a private shuttle.

Check if your driver has a proper license

When taking a taxi in Belize City, always check if the driver has a license. Licensed taxis in Belize have a green license plate, and you can also ask your driver for his or her paperwork. Never take unlicensed taxis in Belize for safety reasons.

How To Get To Placencia Belize- The Best Transportation Options From Belize City

Central America · October 13, 2019

Placencia is a charming beach town located at the tip of a narrow 16-mile peninsula in southern Belize. Once a sleepy fishing village, Placencia is now one of the top tourist destinations in the country. Even with the spike in tourists, Placencia has managed to hold on to its small-town charm.

Placencia is about seventy miles south (as the crow flies) from Belize City. The only international airport in Belize is Philip S.W. Goldson Airport in Belize City. If you plan to visit Placencia you will need to line up some form of transportation there from the airport.

How To Get To Placencia Belize

Hands down, the three best transportation options from Belize City to Placencia are:

  • Hire a private or shared shuttle
  • T ake a short flight

You can’t go wrong with any of these options and this post will help you decide which one is best for you.

We’d never rented a car in Belize but everything we read said driving in Belize wasn’t a problem. So, we decided to rent a car and try it out. It turns out that what we read was right, driving a rental car is a great way to travel to Placencia. Following the advice from the rental car company to drive during the daylight hours and go slow to avoid flying over a speed bump, we never had a problem driving in Belize.

Things To Know About Driving A Rental Car To Placencia-

Looking at the map from Belize City to Placencia, it looks like taking the Coastal Highway in La Democracia would be the fastest way to Placencia. But, our rental car company made it perfectly clear that we were not allowed to drive the rental car on the Coastal Highway. They suggested the alternate route through the capital city Belmopan and onto the Hummingbird Highway.

The drive from Belize City to Placencia is approximately 145 miles and takes three to four hours.

The main highways from Belize City to Placencia are well maintained. That changes drastically once you arrive in Placencia. Many of the side roads are dirt with potholes and washouts. It isn’t much of a problem though because Placencia is such a walkable town. If you are staying near town you can park your car and walk everywhere.

Pros and Cons of Renting a Car

Pros – The Hummingbird Highway is a beautiful drive that winds through mountains, over rivers, and past small villages in central Belize. Driving your own car gives you the freedom to take it slow and stop whenever you want. It is also nice to have a car in Placencia to drive to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary or tour the Cacao Farm and not have to go with a tour group.

Cons – One drawback is the time it takes to rent a car and drive to Placencia. If you are short on time flying would be a better option. Another Con is that besides driving to Cockscomb Basin, a car isn’t necessary to have in Placencia. Paying for a rental car to stay parked at your lodging for a few days is an unnecessary expense.

Because Placencia is only seventy miles from Belize City, it is a quick thirty-minute flight. Taking a flight to Placencia is the most expensive option but it’s also the fastest and most convenient. You can catch your flight to Placencia right out of Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport.

Things to Know About Flying to Placencia

The Airport in Placencia is small. Small is an understatement. The runway is actually the road into Placencia village. There’s an arm that comes down to block the road when a flight is taking off or landing. Because of the small airport, only small planes fly into Placencia.

The two airlines that fly from Belize City to Placencia are Maya Island Air and Tropic Air . Both are reputable airlines and their prices are similar. I would suggest booking with whichever airline offers a flight departure time that best fits your schedule.

Pros and Cons of Taking a Flight to Placencia

Pros – If you are short on time, flying to Placencia is by far the best option. You can arrive in Belize City, go through customs, and then catch your flight to Placencia from the same airport. You could be in Placencia within three hours of arriving in Belize.

A pro for me (although not everyone will agree with this) is flying in a small plane. I love it! You are closer to the ground and have a better view of what’s below.

Cons – Even though you have a great view of the land below from a small plane, you miss out on seeing Central Belize up close. The Hummingbird Highway really is a beautiful drive and it’s fabulous to experience the non-touristy areas in Belize.

Shuttle Bus

You can pre-arrange either a private or a shared shuttle bus to take you to Placencia. The shuttle will pick you up right at the airport in Belize City. There are many options for reputable shuttle companies. Here are three that have great reviews: Belize Ground Shuttle , Belize Shuttle by William , and Discounted Belize Shuttles and Tours .

Pros and Cons of Taking a Shuttle Bus to Placencia

Pros – The biggest advantage of taking a shuttle bus to Placencia is the convenience of having a shuttle waiting for you at the airport. Let’s face it; between early flights, layovers, and dealing with customs, air travel is exhausting. Chances are, you’ll be tired from travel when you arrive in Belize City. It’s always nice when you are exhausted from travel to be greeted at the airport by someone holding a sign with your name on it. Even if you have to go to the curb outside the airport and find your shuttle it’s still pretty easy and mindless. You can get into the airconditioned shuttle and start your vacation by enjoying the scenic ride to Placencia.

Cons – There are two drawbacks to taking a shuttle to Placencia. First, you don’t get the luxury of stopping whenever you want along the way to Placencia. If you see a roadside stand that looks like it has amazing food, you will just have to imagine how good the food would be. Also, when you get to Placencia you won’t have a car. As I’ve said before this won’t be a big deal if you are staying in town, but it could be a minor inconvenience.

You can’t go wrong with any of the three transportation options to Placencia. If you are having a hard time deciding, you can always take a shuttle or rent a car on the way to Placencia and then fly back. That way you will get the best of both worlds.

Flight distance: 69 miles or 111 km

Flight time: 38 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 4 hours, 1 minute .

Flying private is roughly 6.3x faster , and saves you about 3.5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula.

No food and entertainment but ... a wonderful view of the landscape and sea from the small plane; of course, if small plane bothers you, you will feel not so well but this is a very nice experience otherwise. The crew at the airport is more than helpful and makes its best, you can enjoy your journey with such people.

Small aircraft: no service on board... No entertraiment on board REALLY expensive for what you get

Pilots seem to have a good handle on things. However, the employees that administer the check-in/out, boarding, baggage, etc do not have a good handle on things. Their status communication for when an issue occurs is zero. I got off a plane during a downpour while one of the employees was standing in the building doorway with an armful of umbrellas and stood there while we walked in the pouring rain thru a half of foot of water in front of the doorway. What was the point of showing us you had umbrellas? The boarding process is very disorganized and there are no status boards or postings or anything to look at to see current status or where you are in the queue. WiFi is very slow if you can even connect to it. The whole thing is just a "sit around and wait" and guess when it is your turn.

The Safest Central American Countries To Visit

Costa Rica, Panama and Belize are among the safest Central American countries. Learn what makes them top safety destinations.

travel time from belize city to placencia

Central America is a destination full of attractions and varying landscapes. The region is incredibly photogenic so travelers will not miss out on photo opportunities. It is full of thriving nature, friendly locals, delectable cuisine and exciting adventures. Central America is a hub for biodiversity, so it is also an ecological treasure to many. Over 20 million people visit Central America per year. And that number does not seem to be slowing down any time soon since the destination is becoming more popular.

Although Central America is a popular travel destination , to some, it has a slightly negative reputation for danger. The perceived danger for tourists has come from film depictions and political unrest. But some countries in Central America are more dangerous than others and there are plenty of safe places to visit. So, travelers should do their own research so they do not miss out on what Central America has to offer. Staying informed is a vital step to ensuring travelers enjoy safe and secure journeys abroad. To aid traveler’s plans to go abroad we have gathered the information they should know about the safest Central American countries.

Safest Countries in Central America

travel time from belize city to placencia

Generally, the top issue for tourists visiting Central America is theft. This crime happens all over the world but is more prevalent in certain places, so in safer areas there is even less to worry about. The northern Central American countries often experience more violent crime. So it is advisable for travelers to avoid visiting the countries with higher crime rates. Check out this guide with the safest Central American countries that travelers should visit.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is commonly known as Central America’s safest country. It has lower crime levels, a more stable economy and a reputation as a peaceful nation. The country also provides a high quality of life to its citizens. Costa Rica does not even have an army and the country is a democracy, so it is a pretty safe destination. It even ranks high in the Global Peace Index . In 2023, it ranked as the 39th country (out of 163 ranked countries) according to its levels of safety and security, extent of domestic or international conflict and degree of militarization.

Costa Rica’s strong safety record allows travelers to explore the country securely. So there is plenty for travelers to do while visiting. The country is known for its fantastic national parks and wildlife. Manuel Antonio National Park and Poas Volcano National Park are among the most popular conservationist areas in Costa Rica. Cave tubing, zip lining and river rafting are some of the popular activities that travelers can enjoy at the parks. Some animal lovers prefer to have as many interactions with surrounding wildlife as possible. In that case, Costa Rica is the perfect place to be since it is an industry leader in ecotourism. Travelers can expect to see sea turtles, sloths and squirrel monkeys at any moment.

Panama is considered a safe destination due to its well lit and well patrolled cities. Technically, Panama is ranked as number 68 on the Global Peace Index, so it is not as safe as Costa Rica . But it is still, relatively, one of the safest places to travel to in Central America. Although the country is certainly not crime free, there are safe areas to stay in. Boquete and Coronado are popular places to stay in Panama with high safety levels and low crime rates. The cities of Panama are considered safe, so travelers that prefer to stay in urban areas will feel comfortable.

Panama has a diverse landscape. So travelers can encounter the desert, rainforests and beaches all in one trip. The lush tropical surroundings are only a part of the country’s overall tourism appeal. Panama has delicious cuisine. Some of the popular local dishes include rondón, gaucho, carimañolas and tamales. This country is also a great destination for backpacking or other outdoor activities, since the wildlife and natural environment is robust. Travelers can snorkel, fish, scuba dive and whale watch in Panama.

Belize

Belize is a small Central American country on the east coast with a welcoming atmosphere. The destination is considered a relatively safe place to travel. Although the country experiences some crime , Belize is considered a safe place to visit. Because the country is so small, travelers will notice that it is not ranked in the Global Peace Index. But this exclusion does not mean that travelers should overlook Belize as a travel destination. As long as travelers exercise safety precautions in Belize, they are likely to have a safe and exciting trip to Central America. Some of the safest parts of Belize include Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Pedro.

Visitors of Belize can experience an authentic cultural exchange where they can tap into the history, cuisine and ecotourism of the country. Nature-based tourism is a popular way for tourists to get to know the intriguing country. For example, the eco-tourism park Inland Blue Hole and St Herman’s Cave are great places to visit. There is also a wealth of knowledge about the Mayan roots of Belize that travelers should learn. There are even countless tours that teach visitors of the rich Mayan culture and explore the Mayan ruins around the country. The most popular cultural excursion is the Altun Ha ruins, but there are plenty of adventurous activities and unique adventures in Belize.

10 Best Places To Visit In Belize In 2024

B elize is a magnificent country tucked between Mexico and Guatemala, with a long stretch of coastline along the Caribbean Sea. We spent a week in Belize during our Central America backpacking trip and could’ve easily stayed much longer!

I was blown away by the kindness of the local people and their vibrant energy. Not to mention the stunning beaches and relaxed island lifestyles. I loved nature and wildlife and just how welcoming Belize felt.

Belize is not only a perfect destination to visit on its own and spend a week or two exploring but you could also easily combine it with a longer trip from Mexico to Guatemala for example, thanks to its relatively small size.

With so many incredible places to visit in Belize, this list will give you all of the best options to choose the perfect destinations for you.

Best Places To Visit In Belize

Belize may be a small country but there are so many great places in this beautiful country.

Here are the top 10 best places to visit in Belize.

1 – Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small island with a very relaxed and laid-back vibe . In fact, it is more correct to describe it as 2 islands since it was hit by a hurricane in 1961 and torn in two. Naturally, the locals took this in their stride and this narrow channel of sea between the 2 islands is now named ‘The Split’.

The Split is a popular place to hang out and enjoy the beautiful clear waters. There is a great beach bar by the split called the Lazy Lizard, where I highly recommend spending an afternoon.

Caye Caulker is well known for being a backpacker hub , especially around the main town. You will find plenty of hostels and bars to meet fellow travelers. We loved the beachside coffee shack called Ice & Beans. They do great coffee and have hammocks on the beach so you can swing while you sip.

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, on the other side of The Split you will find more resor t s and hotels that are geared more toward families visiting Belize with kids .

2 – Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the best Caribbean islands for families . The largest of the Belizean islands, and one of the most popular places to visit in Belize, Ambergris Caye is around 25 miles long but no wider than 1 mile .

The main town is San Pedro, towards the south of the island. There are a lot of things to do in San Pedro , as it is a bustling hub with a much more authentic feel than Caye Caulker.

In this town, you will find more local people going about their day-to-day lives than you will tourists.

We stayed at the Sandbar Beachfront Hostel and this was one of the best hostels we found in Central America . Located right on the beach they have a private pier over the water, a great pool and the restaurant makes the best pizzas!

If you head further north along Ambergris Caye you will find many quiet and stunning beaches with breathtaking turquoise waters. From the shores of the island, you can even see the Barrier Reef that runs alongside Belize.

3 – San Ignacio

Found just a short drive from the Belize-Guatemala border is the town of San Ignacio. Located in far western Belize , it is often used as a stopover by travelers heading from one country to the other. But the town of San Ignacio actually has an awful lot to offer.

San Ignacio is a small town and can be explored on foot , you can take a stroll along the river or head to the big local market for some fresh fruit or homemade local delicacies.

San Ignacio has a lot to do , and is a great place to base yourself if you want to visit the ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave) or explore some of the other places mentioned on this list such as Caracol or Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

San Ignacio is also home to its very own Mayan Ruins site called Cahal Pech .

Cahal Pech is only $5 USD to enter and when we visited we had the entire site to ourselves for hours! You are even allowed to climb the Pyramids still at this site.

If you are heading from Belize to Guatemala, it is worth spending a couple of days in San Ignacio before moving on to Guatemala .

4 – Hopkins

Hopkins is a quiet and peaceful beach village located in the south of the country. It is steadily growing in popularity among travelers but this south Belize gem still maintains its authentic nature, food and culture . This is what visitors love most about Hopkins.

You can enjoy the quiet, pristine beaches in peace and get a real experience of the way of life in this area. One of the most special things to do while in Hopkins is experience the Garifuna drumming . An art that is only practiced in a handful of places still, so it is not to be missed.

The Garifuna people are of mixed Afro-Caribbean descent. They immigrated from the island of Saint Vincent to Belize, settling primarily in the coastal areas, like Hopkins, where Garifuna culture is a celebrated part of the visitor experience.

Hopkins is also the best place to stay if you want to explore the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Reserve . This is one of the only Jaguar reserves in the world.

You can join a tour to hike through the reserve , swimming in beautiful waterfalls as you keep your eyes peeled for a rare glimpse of a Jaguar.

5 – Belize City

If you are flying directly to Belize then you will be landing in Belize City as this is the only international airport in the country . It then makes sense that you may want to spend a day or two exploring the country’s capital city.

There is a surprising amount of colonial history and architecture to be found throughout the city and the best way to experience it all is on a guided tour of the city . This way you will have a local guide who can explain more about what you are seeing as well as advising on the safe areas to stick to around the city.

Some more great spots to have on your itinerary in Belize City are the government buildings, St John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Belize.

Spend a day exploring these sites before you head out to the Cayes and you will really be able to appreciate the contrast between city and island life.

6 – The Blue Hole

Perhaps one of the most iconic and well-known places to visit in Belize is the magnificent Blue Hole . This incredibly unique sinkhole is a natural wonder that is located around 43 miles off the coast of Belize.

It is possible to experience the Blue Hole by boat or from above in a helicopter or small plane. Boat trips are best from Ambergris Caye as this is closer to the hole and the journey will be 3-4 hours each way.

Flights also leave from the small airstrip in San Pedro each day to take tourists on an hour-long flight over the hole .

It is also known to be one of the most sought-after dive sites in the world , drawing experienced divers from far and wide to experience its mysterious depths.

7 – Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Belize is located right next to the second-largest barrier reef in the world . If you are an ocean lover then no trip to Belize should be complete without taking a diving or snorkeling trip out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the Belize Barrier Reef.

The reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising seven protected areas, including the Blue Hole, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and stretching as far south as the South Water Caye Marine Reserve and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve, located off the shores of Placencia.

We did a combination of snorkeling and diving and were blown away. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to hundreds of colorful fish, rays and sea turtles and the water visibility is great.

Shark Ray Alley is an incredible spot that is now home to hundreds of friendly nurse sharks and rays. You can jump right in and swim amongst them. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These waters are also home to Manatees .

We were lucky enough to see one and they are much larger than we expected.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve can be accessed by boat from either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker .

8 – Caracol Mayan Ruins

Belize is known for its impressive Mayan ruins. The ancient Mayan archeological site of Caracol is pretty special.

It’s no secret that there are hundreds of Maya sites in Belize , as well as sprinkled across Mexico and Guatemala. While there are a few more famous than Caracol, like Tikal in Guatemala and Chichén Itzá in Mexico, Caracol is seriously underrated.

This impressive site is buried deep within the Belize jungles, 2 hours from the nearest town and no public transport goes there. Making this one of the most off-the-beaten-path places to visit in Belize.

You will need to join a tour or rent a 4×4 to get there as there is an hour of driving off road before you reach the site.

Caracol was once one of the major Maya hubs, covering an area of 55 square miles. Now the main pyramids have been uncovered and tower over the jungle.

9 – Placencia

Placencia is the most southern beach destination on this list, located a little further south along the coast from Hopkins.

This sleepy fishing village is slowly becoming a favorite among travelers thanks to its small and charming main street, lack of traffic and incredible beaches.

Placencia is the name of the village that sits at the end of the 16 mile-long Placencia Peninsula. The narrow strip of land is only half a mile wide at its widest point making it very much feel like a remote caye.

Luckily for us, it has all the vibes of a gorgeous caye but we can drive there. It is still largely undeveloped and mostly inhabited by locals. You will find no high rises here.

Each morning the local fishermen still head out in their boats around the peninsula and during the summer months, this is an ideal spot to head out on a snorkeling tour find Whale sharks.

10 – Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a unique landscape in Belize. You won’t find the iconic pine trees in the other jungles across the country.

This entrance to the reserve is around a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio . It is possible to drive yourself however the roads inside the reserve can get treacherous after rainfall. The best way to visit the pine forest reserve is on a guided tour .

A tour can take you to multiple spots in a day so you make the most out of your time there. The reserve is home to beautiful towering waterfalls as well as smaller rock pools like Rio On Pools which are perfect for swimming.

It is also where you can find the impressive Rio Frio cave . An enormous cave that leads to a huge underground river system. It is well worth a trip to this wonderful nature spot if you enjoy time in the great outdoors.

Best Places To Visit In Belize FAQs

If you’re planning a trip to any of the best places to visit in Belize, you likely have some other questions about this Central American destination.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Belize.

What part of Belize is best to stay in?

If you are looking for beautiful beaches and to meet lots of fellow travelers then you should stay on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. The water around the cayes is shallow and calm, which is ideal if visiting on a Belize family vacation .

If you want beaches but peace and quiet then you should stay along the beaches in the south of the country. If you are looking to experience the jungles and Mayan ruins then you should stay in San Ignacio.

The jungles around San Ignacio are also home to some beautiful eco-lodges that are great for a peaceful escape.

How long do you need in Belize?

I would recommend spending no less than one week in Belize to get the most out of your time there.

Ten days or more would be the ideal amount of time if you want to experience the islands and the coastal area along the mainland, as well as see the Mayan ruins and the jungles in western Belize.

If you have less than a week then I recommend spending your time on the Cayes and not moving around too much.

When is the best time of year to visit Belize?

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season from January to May. This is when you will have the best temperatures and the least rainfall.

From August to December there is a low risk of hurricanes so always check before you travel.

Is Belize safe to visit?

Belize is generally known to be a safe country for tourists to visit. Belize City has a bit of a reputation for being unsafe in certain areas but crime is rarely directed towards tourists. If in doubt there are plenty of great group tours you can join to explore the city with a local who knows the area.

Regardless of where you visit, it is always best to leave your valuables at home and not wander around alone at night time.

Is Belize cheap or expensive?

Belize is not typically a budget travel destination. It is possible to find cheaper hostel beds, take public buses and eat street food. However, there are far more luxury resorts and activities in Belize which are usually pretty expensive.
