Field Trip Report: Assessing the impacts of Mining, Large scale Farming and Gully Erosion on the Total Environment in Isuikwuato, Uturu and Ihe communities, South Eastern Nigeria.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The field trip mission commenced on the 16th of June 2017, when the team departed from their Port Harcourt base to the first study site, the Lead Mining site at Ishiagu village in Ivo LGA, Ebonyi state. The journey route passed Okigwe town via Uturu and finally ended at Uwani in Enugu state, where lodging accommodations were secured at the Royal Palace Hotel for two nights. The field study group travelled the next morning (being 16th) to Ihe, stopping over at Sancarlos Company Pineapple Agro-farm yard and later proceeds to the Ishiagu mining site for a further study. The second day work ended at Ishiagu mine at 6pm and the team departed to their lodge at Enugu. Finally on the 18th, the group visited to the gully erosion site at Isuikwuato in Abia state to investigate the geohazards around and their triggers and thereafter traveled back to Port Harcourt – which marked the end of the field trip. The total number of participants in the field mission was 44 comprising of the instructing crew, graduate students from different universities and some environmental enthusiasts. The focus of bridging the challenge of environmental theoretical learning and field practice was maintained throughout the phases in the program. The students were exposed to professional field techniques in both acquiring and in analyzing environmental variables, as well as understanding the systemic interacting mood of the ecosystem. Several environmental samplings and analyses were done at the studied sites and recommendations were made in the direction of environmental risk assessment and reduction. Good work practices, among others, were recommended for the operating companies. The need to develop base maps and regular environmental surveys within the selected region were highlighted. Necessary pictures and satellite imageries of the selected sites during the field work were taken and disclosed in the main body of this report for the perusal of the captured audience. The field trip was organized by The Geo-environmental Platform – a nonprofit making body focused at environmental safety and natural resources sustainable use, under supervision of the CD Concept Incorporated managerial board. The assessments did not address allocating specific responsibilities pursuant to the recommendations and any political connotations. This is just an academic / professional training aid giving to subscribed persons.

The paper investigates effect of mulching on growth of ginger in ishiagu, ebonyi state, Nigeria. The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ivo LGA of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, during the 2009 and 2010 cropping seasons, using ginger as test crop. In 2009, there was less than 40% sprouting of ginger at 4 WAP but all the mulched plots were significantly higher than the control. In 2010, there was also significant difference (P < 0.05) in sprouting at 4 WAP but not at 6 and 8 WAP. At 6 WAP there was 50 to 62% sprouting across the treatments. However, at 8 WAP, there was 80% or more sprouting across the treatments. Number of leaves per plant showed that at 6 WAP on average, the organic mulch materials produced higher number of leaves when compared with either the control plot or the black polythene mulched plot. No significant differences occurred between the treatments at 8 WAP. In both years, the dry grass mulch resulted in significantly higher leaf area than the saw dust mulch. The mean leaf area for 2009 and 2010 was in the magnitude of dry grass >rice husk> saw dust > black polythene > control. There was increase in plant height from 4-12 WAP in 2009 and 2010. The organic mulches available were suitable for ginger production in the study area and the test crop UG1 is well adaptable to Ishiagu Environment. It is therefore concluded that mulching is imperative for ginger production and variety UG1 could be used to maximize production at Ishiagu environment. Dry grass and rice husk mulches should be used in Ishiagu environment. INTRODUCTION The agricultural land area of the world is limited and is composed of a layer of top soil that averages only about 18 centimeters over the earth's surface. This mantle should be exploited with care. The conservation and replenishment of this mantle is important to support the survival of increasing human population (Lal, 1994). Amo ng other methods, the use of mulch takes prime place in conservation and replenishment of the top soil. Most other methods like the application of fertilizer do add nutrients to the soil but do not conserve the soil. Modern soil conservation is based on the result of definite research and on farmer's experience from all over the world. The application of soil conserving practices, such as mulching, results in increased hectare production and decrease per unit cost of production. To the farmer, such practices not only result in an increase in farm profits, but also help to lower the cost of food and clothing to people living in cities. The pace and pattern of various forms of land use change and degradation continues at alarming proportion in several areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. Given the emergent risks, recurrent subsidence and erosions rank as permanent features in some areas of the continent like Nigeria. This exacerbates natural constraints on agricultural production and poor soil quality with damage to natural areas. The severity of gullies in all that, drive the destruction of vast areas in Eastern Nigeria due to intense farming and other elements. All these types of degradation cause declines in the productive capacity of land through reduced yields. For policy makers, the problem is difficult to determine precisely due to limited access to geo-spatial assessment as a decision support tool. Accordingly, there is an urgent need for regular use of such devices in assessing the severity of land degradation and change. To fill that void, this study analyzes land degradation issues in Eastern Nigeria with the latest advances in GIS and remote sensing technologies. Emphasis is on the issues, impacts, factors, efforts and remedies. In terms of methodology, the paper adopts a mix scale approach involving descriptive statistics coupled with geo-spatial technologies of GIS and remote sensing. The results from the use of these techniques point to widespread changes involving gains, declines and degradation in the region's landscape over the years. While the size of land types devoted to agriculture, bare soil, forest and urban land surged in the study area, bushland, grassland and areas covered by water declined from 2000 to 2017. The region also experienced greater threats from the exposure to recurrent land degradation as manifested with the occurrence of erosion hazards across various sites. The emergent spatial patterns not only revealed concentration of agricultural land class along the upland northern axis of the region along Ebonyi and Enugu and clusters of forest cover on the lower south part (Imo and Abia). GIS mappings showed the dispersion of erosion hazards in some of the states. With change attributed to a host of factors raging from competing land use made up of mining, agriculture, ineffective policy, poor conservation and environmental and physical elements. The paper suggested the need for education, effective policy, local participation, soil conservation and the design of regional land use information system as remedies.

The haematological studies on selected well-water sources within two kilometers from Ishiagu quarry site were evaluated using albino rats. Haematological parameters were determined using standard methods. Results shows that haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit value, red blood cell count and neutrophytes decreased, while platelet count increased significantly at (p&lt;0.05) in test groups compared to control. Mean corpuscular volume and corpuscular haemoglobin concentration decreased non-significantly at (p&lt;0.05). Total white blood count, percentage lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophytes were not influenced by the long term intake of the well-water. These findings show that consumption of well-water around the quarry site in Ishiagu may lead to anaemia in the experimental animals and therefore may not be safe for human consumption. The toxicological implications of these findings are discussed.

The study was aimed at the application of a precise method to ascertain the role of quarrying activities on vegetation cover in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Quarrying activities affect vegetation cover by hindering it from performing its biological roles among which is the photosynthesis process by means of which the environmental pollutant, carbon dioxide is converted to life sustaining oxygen. Methods employed in the study include field measurements carried out with the assistance of a qualified surveyor, who obtained the area extent of degraded land. The Ishiagu area is a water scarce region and has played host to mining activities for more than four decades. Mining-related activities have become a threat to potable water supply in the area. This paper is an attempt to show the extent of this threat and in particular, investigate the regional groundwater occurrence and flow pattern based on GPS, water well and geological data. This basinwide model can be used for further groundwater assessment, pollution control and contaminant management. Groundwater occurs between 2.4 and 9 m in the Lekwesi- Lokpaukwu area; 1.5–3.7 m in the Ndi-Ugbugbor-Ayaragu axis and 1.2–4.6 m in the Ishiagu area. Recharge areas include the Leru-Amaubiri-Lekwesi sandstone hills and the Ihetutu-Ugwuajirija mine field. While the ultimate sink of contamiants is the Ivo River system, other discharge axis is the Ishiagu-Ayaragu axis and the Ogwor Ndi- Ugbugbor zone. An unconfined and a confined (>10) circulation groundwater system was inferred, and flow model reveals that a large part of Ishiag-Ayaragu and Ndi- Ugbugbor part of the study area suffer polluted recharge from the Pb/Zn mining area. Groundwater was also subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis and the existence of 3–4 hydrological regimes, which revealed: Unpolluted recharge areas, areas affected by polluted recharge, a deep water and shallow water circulation and mine effluents.

The effects of mine water from Pb and Zn mines on agricultural soil in Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria was investigated using standard analytical methods. The soil was observed to be acidic with loss of SO4 PO4 NO3 and total organic matter (TOM) with soil impaction. However the rate of loss of the soil nutrients was dependent on distance from the discharge points. The old discharge area had higher impact than the recently started discharge area. Pb and Zn were significantly high while Cr, Cd and Fe were non-statistically high in the polluted soil (P=0.05). In microbial estimation, total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) were the least adversely affected while nitrifying bacteria were the most affected. Phosphate solubilizing and cellulolytic bacteria were equally adversely affected. Results obtained therefore indicated adverse effects on agricultural soil and suggest the need for proper remediation before use to enhance fertility and reduce heavy metal levels.

The discriminant analysis showed that local vegetation cover in 6 communities gave positive test result based on their positive discriminant analysis scores. The other 21 communities had negative test results based on their negative discriminant analysis scores. In effect, whereas quarrying activates were found significant in 6 communities, they were not found significant in the other 21 communities. The analysis yielded a canonical correlation value of 0.94, indicating that there was a very strong effect of the quarrying activities in the affected areas.The resulting Wiliks's Lambda and Chi-square values respectively of 0.120 and <0.01 showed that there was a satisfactory classification of the intensities or level of quarrying activities.Hence, precise determination of the effects of quarrying activities on local vegetation cover will constantly enhance efforts towards reduction of local carbondioxide surplus and oxygen deficiency through photosynthesis process, as well as gully erosion restraint. Initiation and enforcement of policies towards achieving best sustainable quarrying practice are recommended.

FIELD REPORT ON THE GEOLOGICAL MAPPING OF IGARRA AREA

Basically, geological mapping involves the study of rocks; in situ, that is, in their natural environment and the representation of such rocks on a geological map. Furthermore, rocks of the Igarra area constitute part of the Basement Complex of southwestern Nigeria. On the basis of field relationships and petrological studies, these rocks can be grouped into gneissic rocks, meta-sedimentary assemblages, intrusive igneous rock bodies and sedimentary rocks (formations).

            The gneissic rocks comprise of calc-gneiss and migmatite-gneiss, and the metasedimentary assemblages chiefly; metapelites are found as quartzites and pelitic schist. The intrusive rocks consist essentially of the Pan-African granitic units.  The minor rocks include; pegmatite and quartz vein.

            Field and petrographic studies have confirmed that the rocks in this area have undergone at least three episodes of deformation, D1, D2  and D3. The first and second episodes of deformation produced F1 and F2 along with the foliations S1 and S2 respectively. Associated with the three episodes of deformations D1, D2 and D3 are the M1, M2 and M3 episodes of metamorphism. The entire study area belongs to low to middle metamorphic grade (that is, greenschist facies to amphibolite facies).

            This comprehensive report consist of two section A and B. Although section A is also the basement complex of Nigeria consists of the migmatite gneissic complex, the metasediment, schist belt, the granitoids and the minor rocks. The granitiods consist of mainly of syenite and aplites (microgranite) while the minor rocks are quartz veins, aplites and dolerites dykes. The region has undergone multiple deformations, evidence of which are folds, faults, cross-cutting relationship and various types of metamorphism. The contact point of all rocks and structural features were established. The region is also of great economic interest because of marble, quartzite and granite which are quarried for industrial purposes.

While section B is a report of the independent geologic mapping of Are Ekiti area. In this exercise, the mapping techniques learnt at igarra were independently put to use. The lithology encounter are the migmatite gneiss complex which consist of biotite and biotite gneiss, banded gneiss, and meta igneous rocks.

            The mapping exercise involves the description of the field relationships between different rock types. Mapping is carried out in the following order of time of formation., chemical and mineralogical composition, the nature and altitude (geomorphology) of the rock type, and the lithology as well as the structure.

Field Trip and Students’ Performance in Environmental Studies: The Case of Noun Bayelsa Study Centre, Yenagoa

Field trip is undertaken within most earth sciences and professions. More than a set of skills, environmental research is a way of thinking and examining critically the various aspects of our physical environment. It is a habit of questioning about what you do in your environment, and empirical examination to find answers to environmental problems, with a view to instituting appropriate changes for a more environmental friendly habitat. This study is therefore aimed at x-raying the imperatives of Field Trip in Students studying various aspects in Environmental Sciences. The study adopted reconnaissance survey, observation, assessment of field trip report and interview methods. It specifically examines works of students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Yenagoa study center. The findings of the study among other issues discovered that students who undergo field trip during their course of studies acquire more knowledge and better equipped in their chosen discipline. Useful recommendations were made to guide students on further field trips so as to enrich their knowledge on Environmental issues.

The educational system of the world has shown great improvement in terms of knowledge, interest, and motivation as demonstrated among the children in the world. The performance of children in their academics in the recent times, in this 21 st century has shown a tremendous improvement. In the western world, teaching and learning methods is taught to learner through computer simulation, computer tutorial, 3D animation and field trip. Field trip makes students to see things for them to get first-hand information, this has made teaching and learning to be impressive, students can understand what is taught to them. Teaching is made simple because what is taught to students they see it, touches it, and feels it by hand themselves, when they go on visit to the sight. In Nigeria cycle, the teaching and learning method is done in lecture methods in schools, which make students and pupils not to understand what is being taught to them, learning is bored because the learner do not see what is taught to them, they are abstract in nature because teacher does the teaching, while students listing to the teacher. It is a teacher learning centered approach; in carrying out this study the researcher used survey design methods to gather data for the research, findings was discussed to back up the research, conclusion were made. Field trip brings excitement, cooperation by doing things collectively, first-hand information by knowing what you are to learn by visiting, feeling, and touching to make learning methods to be simple.
