Education Department to open investigation into Nex Benedict's Oklahoma school district

Nex Benedict outside the family’s home in Owasso, Okla., in Dec. 2023.

The Department of Education is opening an investigation into whether the Oklahoma school district where the late 16-year-old transgender student Nex Benedict attended high school failed to appropriately respond to sex-based harassment, according to a letter obtained by NBC News on Friday.

The letter was addressed to the Human Rights Campaign, the country's largest LGBTQ rights group, which had filed a complaint with the department following Benedict's Feb. 8 death.

Benedict died a day after engaging in a fight with three other students in a school bathroom at Owasso High School, in a case that has drawn intense media attention and condemnation from LGBTQ advocates around the world.

In its complaint, the HRC called on the Department of Education to investigate the district for failing “to address the discrimination and harassment to which Nex was subjected” and to determine whether the district violated Title IX, a landmark civil rights law that protects people from gender-based discrimination in education programs funded by the federal government.

“This letter is to notify you that the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR), is opening for investigation the above-referenced complaint that you filed against the Owasso Public Schools (the District),” Karen E. Mines, the Education Department's chief attorney, wrote in a letter to the HRC. “Your complaint alleges that the District discriminated against students by failing to respond appropriately to sex-based harassment, of which it had notice, at Owasso High School during the 2023-2024 school year."

Mines added that the department will be investigating whether the district failed to appropriately respond to alleged harassment of students "in a manner consistent with the requirements of Title IX."

Brock Crawford, a spokesperson for Owasso Public Schools, confirmed in an email that the district received notice of the Education Department's investigation and pushed back on the allegations.

"The district is committed to cooperating with federal officials and believes the complaint submitted by HRC is not supported by the facts and is without merit," Crawford said.

The Education Department did not return a request for comment.

It is still unclear what caused Benedict's death and whether or not Benedict's fight with three other high schoolers played a role in his death.

In body camera footage from a police officer's interview with Benedict on Feb. 7, the day of the fight, Benedict can be heard telling the officer that three students attacked him in the bathroom. The teen also said he threw water on the students prior to the fight, because they had bullied him and his friends for the way they dressed.

"Nex’s family, community, and the broader 2SLGBTQI+ (two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex+) community in Oklahoma are still awaiting answers following their tragic loss," Kelley Robinson, the HRC's president, said in a statement Friday evening. "We appreciate the Department of Education responding to our complaint and opening an investigation–we need them to act urgently so there can be justice for Nex, and so that all students at Owasso High School and every school in Oklahoma can be safe from bullying, harassment, and discrimination."

Harvard law school dean john manning named interim provost.

Interim President Alan M. Garber ’76 announced today that John F. Manning ’82, J.D. ’85, Morgan and Helen Chu Dean and Professor of Law at Harvard Law School (HLS), will serve as interim provost beginning March 14. John C.P. Goldberg, Carter Professor of General Jurisprudence, will serve as interim dean of HLS.

As Harvard’s chief academic officer, Manning, who is taking a leave from his role as dean, will have oversight of University-wide academic priorities and activities, and will also lead several key initiatives, including exploring the considerations around institutional neutrality and continuing the University’s focus on fostering academic freedom and civil discourse. Garber, who served as provost since September 2011, was appointed interim president on Jan. 2 after Claudine Gay, 30th president of Harvard University, stepped down.

“An outstanding dean and eminent scholar of public law, John is also a valued colleague and a trusted adviser to me and to other leaders around the University,” Garber said in a message to the Harvard community announcing the appointment. “He is an ideal individual to advance several key University initiatives, including forthcoming efforts to explore institutional neutrality and how best to nurture an atmosphere of open inquiry, respectful dialogue, and academic freedom essential to academic excellence.”

“I am grateful to interim President Garber for the opportunity to serve Harvard as interim provost,” Manning said. “Harvard enabled me, as a first-gen student, to live a life that neither my parents nor theirs could have dreamed of. It feels so important at this critical time for those who love this institution to be there to help.”

“He is an ideal individual to advance several key University initiatives, including forthcoming efforts to explore institutional neutrality and how best to nurture an atmosphere of open inquiry, respectful dialogue, and academic freedom essential to academic excellence.” Interim President Alan M. Garber

Recognized for his ability to listen carefully and without judgment to different points of view, Manning has worked to foster a culture of free, open, and respectful discourse within the School during a time of polarization within higher education and the wider society. In partnership with HLS colleagues, Manning developed initiatives to foster open discourse, such as the module on “difficult conversations” for all 1L students, adoption of a graduation requirement in negotiation/leadership, introduction of the Chatham House Rule for classroom discussions, and establishment of the HLS Rappaport Forum and other public conversations that model civil discourse among people with different points of view.

“A great university must be a place of great humility, curiosity, and openness, a place where we ask the hardest questions, where we learn from our disagreements, where vigorous discussion and debate across differences deepen human knowledge and understanding,” Manning said. “I look forward, in the weeks and months ahead, to learning from colleagues across the University as we work together to determine how best to nurture and protect a culture in which teaching, learning, and research can thrive in the years to come.”

Dedicated to expanding opportunity and access to legal education, under Manning’s leadership HLS has increased financial aid for students seeking public-interest careers and launched an opportunity grant scholarship program for the School’s highest-need students. Additionally, HLS has worked to introduce prelaw pipeline programs for prospective students from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds and will offer courses on law and its impact on learners around the world through the launch of the Harvard Law School Online initiative.

“John Manning is a person of deep integrity, wisdom, and experience who has served Harvard with distinction as well as distinguishing himself at the highest levels of the legal profession,” said Harvard Corporation Senior Fellow Penny Pritzker. “In John, President Garber has chosen an interim provost who will work tirelessly with passion and purpose to support and advance Harvard’s teaching and research mission and its foundational commitment to excellence and our commitment to learn and grow from these challenging times.”

In addition to his contributions to the Law School, Manning has served on various University-wide initiatives and committees, including on the University-wide Task Force on Inclusion and Belonging, the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning’s faculty advisory committee, and the HarvardX Faculty Committee. Additionally, he served as co-chair of a working group charged with refining the Non-Discrimination and Anti-Bullying Policy procedures. Currently, he is a member of the Dynamic Work Council, the Information Security Oversight Committee, and is co-chair of a working group to establish procedures for the University Committee on Rights and Responsibilities.

Manning has been a member of the HLS faculty since 2004. He was appointed deputy dean of HLS in 2013 and was named dean in 2017. Prior to joining Harvard, he was the Michael I. Sovern Professor of Law at Columbia Law School.

An expert in administrative law, federal courts, legislation and regulation, separation of powers, and statutory interpretation, Manning’s scholarly work is extensive as co-editor of the casebooks “Hart and Wechsler’s Federal Courts and the Federal System” and “Legislation and Regulation” and as a frequent author of articles published in prominent law journals.

Manning, a graduate of Harvard Law School and Harvard College, also held various notable positions earlier in his career, including serving as a law clerk to the Hon. Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court of the United States and to the Hon. Robert H. Bork on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Additionally, he served as an attorney-adviser in the Office of Legal Counsel in the U.S. Department of Justice and as an assistant to the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice.

Goldberg, a leading scholar in tort law, private law, and legal theory, will begin his service as interim dean on March 14. A member of the faculty since 2008, Goldberg previously served as deputy dean from 2017 to 2022. In that time, he worked closely with Manning on overseeing curricular reform, developing the School’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and other initiatives.

“A member of the faculty since 2008, John is admired as much for his integrity, generosity, and compassion as for his extraordinary intellect, rigorous academic work, and broad institutional service,” Garber said. “I have benefited from John’s thoughtful counsel through his participation on the Provost’s Advisory Committee and look forward to collaborating with him more closely.”

Recognized for his dedication to teaching and mentoring, Goldberg has taught numerous first-year and upper-level courses including “Civil Procedure,” “Constitutional Law,” “Contracts,” “Criminal Law,” and “Torts.” The recipient of multiple teaching awards, he taught and served as associate dean for research at Vanderbilt Law School before joining Harvard’s faculty.

“It’s truly an honor to be asked by President Garber to serve as interim dean of the Law School,” said Goldberg. “During this period, I will, in the spirit of Dean Manning, do everything I can to support our amazing students, faculty, and staff.”

Goldberg’s administrative leadership experience is extensive, having served as the first chair of the University’s Electronic Communications Policy Oversight Committee and as a member of the Provost’s Advisory Committee — an informal group of faculty advisers from across the Schools. Within HLS, Goldberg has been a member of its Lateral Appointments Committee for 11 years, chairing it for three.

Outside of his teaching, Goldberg is an associate reporter for the American Law Institute’s “Fourth Restatement of Property,” an adviser to the “Third Restatement of Torts,” and a co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Legal Analysis, as well as a member of the editorial boards of the Journals of Tort Law and Legal Theory. Before entering the legal academy, Goldberg clerked for Judge Jack Weinstein of the Eastern District of New York and for Supreme Court Justice Byron White. He earned his B.A. from Wesleyan University, an M. Phil. in politics from Oxford University, an M.A. in politics from Princeton University, and his J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the N.Y.U. Law Review.

Prince William Accepts Sweet Gifts for Kate Middleton and Their Kids at Welsh School: 'He Was Really Grateful'

Headteacher Richard Hatwood tells PEOPLE it was "fantastic" to have Prince William visit

Janine Henni is a Royals Staff Writer for PEOPLE Digital, covering modern monarchies and the world's most famous families. Like Queen Elizabeth, she loves horses and a great tiara moment.

the rom school visits

Prince William will head home with sweet presents for his family after visiting a school while celebrating St. David’s Day in Wales .

On Friday, the Prince of Wales, 41, visited Ysgol Yr Holl Saint/All Saint's School in Wrexham on the feast day for the country’s patron saint. During his school trip, he received thoughtful gifts for his wife, Kate Middleton , and their three children, Prince George , 10, Princess Charlotte , 8, and Prince Louis , 5.

As seen in a video shared on X by local outlet Radio City News, three pupils presented Prince William with red dragon toys (the symbol that appears on the Welsh national flag) for his kids.

Ben Birchall-WPA Pool/Getty

"Look at this! Thank you very much, the children will love these when I come home with these guys,” the Prince of Wales said to the students.

The royal then asked the schoolchildren if they had “any good names” for the handmade crochet animals.

“James, Charlotte and Mason,” one boy offered, with a look to his fellow students.

“Named after yourselves,” a school staffer joked off camera, which made the kids and William laugh.

The Prince of Wales then accepted a large bouquet and said, “I’ll pass those on to Catherine as well,” referring to his wife’s full name .

Richard Hatwood, headteacher of Ysgol Yr Holl Saint/All Saint's School, exclusively tells PEOPLE “it was fantastic” to have Prince William visit. The school administrator says that the Prince of Wales was touched by the crochet dragons “for each of his children as a token from Wales.”

“He thought they were a lovely gesture, he would get them straight back to them. He was really grateful,” Hatwood tells PEOPLE.

Ben Birchall/PA Wire via ZUMA Press

The bouquet for Princess Kate was “for the Princess of Wales to share our thoughts while she has been unwell," Hatwood says. Princess Kate, 42, continues her private recovery after having abdominal surgery on Jan. 16, and Kensington Palace previously stated she is “unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”

While Prince William traveled to Wrexham without his wife and kids, Wales has become an extra special place for the family in recent years. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, King Charles used his first speech as monarch to pronounce his eldest son as the Prince of Wales, conferring the title traditionally given to the male heir to the British throne (and which King Charles held until his accession).

Prince William’s wife became the Princess of Wales in the same sweep, and their kids began to use Wales as their last name. The siblings previously used Cambridge as their surname, reflecting their parent’s titles as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The name change came full circle for Prince William, as he and Prince Harry were known as William Wales and Harry Wales while attending school and through their military service because of Charles’ title at the time.

Andrew Parsons/Kensington Palace

Prince William’s parental side shone through at the elementary school in another moment caught on camera by Radio City Times. In a clip shared on X , the royal wiggled the oversized daffodil wreath a little girl wore around her neck and patted her on the head. It's tradition to wear a daffodil or a leek (Saint David's personal symbol) on the feast day as both are closely associated with the nation, and William stepped out for the day with the yellow flower pinned to his lapel.

Hatwood tells PEOPLE he was impressed with Prince William during the school visit.

“He was really personable and genuine and down to earth. He was keen to engage with the children and hear about all of their learning and everything they have been getting up to and see what they have been learning about,” the headteacher tells PEOPLE. “He was so personable with them and keen to hear from as many of them as possible. I think he was really impressed with the school — putting this one for him was a huge privilege for us. For him to see us as business-as-usual in our school and how learning goes on day in, day out was great.”

According to Hatwood, Prince William even practiced some of his Welsh language skills.

He spoke "some Cymraig [Welsh] as he came in. He said, 'Happy St. David’s Day' in Welsh and 'morning' and 'afternoon.' It was really relaxed having him in the school,” Hatwood says.

The Prince of Wales learned all about the children's St. David’s Day celebrations during his time at Ysgol Yr Holl Saint/All Saint's School, including traditional Welsh folk dancing and the baking of a bread called bara brith. In addition to the other gifts, the teacher says that the Prince of Wales was sent home with some of the tea bread flavored with dried fruits and spices.

“He did some of the baking of bara brith with some of the children, helping them finish it off before it went in the oven,” Hatwood tells PEOPLE. "That has gone back to the palace with this staff too. We hope he enjoys that."

“He was a little bit shocked at the weight of it. It is quite a heavy cake!” he says.

Prince William also met with Year 6 students who have been studying the history of the Gresford Mining Disaster, where an explosion tragically killed 266 local men working in the mine.

“He explored in a little bit more about the science and tech work and the work they have done on the Gresford Colliery disaster, a really important historical event that happened here,” Hatwood tells PEOPLE. “He was keen to understand how children learn about that in their heritage studies."

After leaving the school, Prince William visited the Gresford Colliery Disaster Memorial.

The school visit marked the royal's second stop in Wales on St. David’s Day. Prince William began his trip at The Turf pub next to Wrexham Association Football Club's stadium, where he took shots of whiskey and poured a pint with Rob McElhenney , who purchased the historic soccer club in 2021 with Ryan Reynolds .

Taking the pitch at the Racecourse Ground, Prince William received a gift for himself: a Wrexham jersey with his first name and the number 9 on the back.

UC outshines Ivy League schools graduating million-dollar unicorn founders

Entrepreneur magazine says uc outranks stanford, harvard, yale in facilitating tech start-ups.

headshot of Diana M Lara

While the University of Cincinnati may not belong to the Ivy League schools, it proudly boasts its own league — the "Unicorn League."

A new study found that UC left prestigious rivals such as Yale, Harvard and MIT behind with its track record of producing successful unicorn-launching alums, as reported by Entrepreneur magazine.

The term unicorn is given to companies valued at more than $1 billion that are not publicly traded. As of January 2024, there are more than 1,300 globally active unicorns, as reported by PitchBook.com .

UC celebrates 11 unicorn founders

A business professor at Stanford, Ilya Strebulaev, recently conducted a report ranking the top universities according to the percentage of unicorns associated with them.

According to Strebulaev’s report, founders of a U.S. startup who studied or worked at UC are 3.3 times more likely to achieve unicorn status than average.

The report lists the odds ratio of schools shadowing UC in producing a unicorn:

  •        UC — 3.3 times more likely
  •        Yale and Vanderbilt University tied — 2.0
  •        Stanford University — 1.6
  •        University of California, Berkeley — 1.5
This research study only reaffirms what the University of Cincinnati has long known to be true: That UC is a special place that prepares remarkably special people to compete at the highest level.

Ryan Hays, UC executive vice president and chief Innovation and strategy officer

The startup culture is unique, requiring a blend of ingenuity and business acumen to identify market opportunities along with a robust group of mentors and financiers for support.

“This research study only reaffirms what the University of Cincinnati has long known to be true: That UC is a special place that prepares remarkably special people to compete at the highest level," Ryan Hays, UC executive vice president and chief innovation and strategy officer, said. "There’s a reason we named our strategic direction Next Lives Here . It perfectly captures the forward-leaning, innovation-driven, grit-fueled, next-minded boldness that comes with being a Bearcat.”

Bearcats turned unicorn

Creating a business as prosperous as these demands immense dedication, hard work, intelligence and a dash of luck. Yet, as Strebulaev’s report illustrates, the success rate of those attending UC undoubtedly enhances one’s odds of unicorn status.

The UC 1819 Innovation Hub , Technology Transfer Office and Venture Lab pre-accelerator program forge an entrepreneurial ecosystem catalyzing ideas from conception to market success. With abundant resources and creative support, tomorrow's unicorns can thrive in their local innovation backyard, the Cincinnati Innovation District .

These 11 Bearcat unicorns share a common origin — they all attended the UC where they were equipped with an entrepreneurial blueprint that propelled them on a trajectory of founding billion-dollar startups.

History of Roman Britain

Invasion, conquest and settlement - trips and workshops

The Roman Conquest and invasion of 43 AD was far from decisive, indeed it took a few decades for the Romans to stretch their influence across much of the length and breadth of our isles. Repeated skirmishes forced the Romans to settle garrisons of troops here and it is this military heritage that survives in a lot of places to this day and is the focus for many Roman school trips.

Away from the front line which was pushing through Wales, past the Boudicca rebellion, towards Scotland (where they built Hadrian's Wall) Romans who had wealth or positions of power built themselves grand villas in the Mediterranean style, with magnificent mosaic floors, which must have looked completely alien to local people. From the evidence that does survive from the time, it appears that not all of the local inhabitants of Britain were keen to see that back of the Romans, with many seeming to adapt to a Roman way of life; clearly borrowing architectural styles.

Despite the time which has elapsed since the Romans left, and the many layers of building and destruction that have taken place in the interim, there are still many treasures up and down the country that give Roman school trips a wonderful insight into Roman life and the Romanisation of local people. If you are studying any aspect of the Roman occupation you will find some excellent Roman school visit opportunities on this page.

Romans Vs Boudica School Visits

Transport your class back in time to the year 61CE!

Maximus Fabius Manlius Gregorius is a Roman Legionary whilst Laelia is a fearsome Gladiatrix (who wishes she could pass as a man to join the Legions).  This exciting Roman day may well be the best Specialists visit ever.  It can be booked for one – three classes for a full day or a half day.

In local schools, two Specialists can attend and Lisa will sometimes adopt the guise of Boudica, the famous Warrior Queen of the Iceni.  In this case, two form entry schools will get Specialist-led sessions for all children all day.  Further afield, two and three form entry schools can be accommodated with some teacher-led sessions and we have enough resources for all children to be occupied on Roman/Celt sessions all day.

Below is an outline of a typical Roman Visit.

Introduction

The soldier or gladiatrix summons the children by blowing loudly upon the Cornu.  After introductions, there is discussion of the impact of Roman conquest in Britain.  Every day clothing, objects and way of life are discussed and volunteers are picked for dressing up.

the rom school visits

Roman Legionary

In this session, the Specialist will share the Impedimenta (the Roman Legionary’s Marching Pack), deconstructing it piece by piece and passing objects around for handling.  Some of the weaponry can also be handled by children as volunteers are asked to show their warlike skills!  Children form a testudo (tortoise formation) using our class set of wooden scuta (shields).  Stories of war are shared as well as descriptions of Roman siege engines.  This session demonstrates clearly to children the might of the Roman army.

the rom school visits

Boudica & the Celts

This session can be presented by the fearsome figure of Boudica herself.  Storytelling in the oral tradition is used to share Boudica’s most famous exploits with the children and various dramatic techniques are employed to consolidate learning.  Finally, children can decorate their own brooch using Celtic patterns.  (We bring safety pins; card to be provided in school, please.)

Nationwide, this session is adapted to be teacher-led. It helps children to understand the lives of ordinary Celts at the time and also incorporates Art/DT skills.

Roman Forum

The roman forum.

This session is structured in three separate but related sections which the children carousel around throughout the hour.  It offers an amazing opportunity to handle many authentic objects most of which are of museum quality.

Dressing Up/Object Handling

Children can dress up in child-sized versions of Gregorius’ legionary armour & helmet and pose for photos with an Auxiliary’s shield.  A selection of objects are available for careful handling.

the rom school visits

Votive Making

Children are directed in how to craft their own Roman votive from clay (provided by The Specialists).

This session incorporates Art/DT.

Various writing tools are shown including wax tablets and styli.  Children learn ancient versions of our alphabet using Roman dip pens and ink (paper to be provided in school, please).

the rom school visits

Gladiator School & Pastimes

Laelia displays her Gladiatrix kit and volunteers are chosen to dress up in some of it.  She then instructs the children in the use of our class set of wooden spears and nets.  Roman pastimes are then discussed and children have the opportunity to play with a range of Roman games.  These can include marbles, dice games, tabula and our class sets of real knucklebones and authentically reproduced Ludus Latrunculorum.

Storytelling

Roman myths & storytelling.

the rom school visits

We always end the day with storytelling as a whole group, ideally fitting in a myth, told traditionally as well as one of our much-appreciated “silly stories” when all can join in together.

We, Greg and Lisa, work fully in role.  This means that we use our subject knowledge to respond to questions as people from the past would do.  This historical interpreter’s commitment to authenticity is tempered with a teacher’s sense of appropriateness though – so we do not swear (as some reenactors will in school, claiming that this was the way it was!).  Our focus is on the educational experience for the children and what serves them best, so the sessions are interactive and involve everyone.

The day is fully risk assessed and this can be emailed upon request.  Confirmation of booking is taken as a contract between the school and The Specialists and acceptance of our T & C’s .

Greg and Lisa McCarthy have many years of experience working with children. Greg is a teacher and Lisa a former Occupational Therapist in learning disabilities. Both have DBS and public liability insurance.

Resources are meticulously researched and authentic to the period.

Roman school visits for education.  We provide a living history and reenactment service as historical interpreters focusing on the  Invaders and Settlers topic.  As re-enactors, we use storytelling/myths, songs, dance, writing using runes and artefacts such as toys and games, brooches, full viking raider kit etc. to bring the excitement of real history to your classroom.
