1964 Browning Safari (FN) .222 rifle value

  • Add to quote

browning safari 222

I'm pretty familiar with these rifles though I've not ever owned one. Your rifle was made with an FNH action and assembled by Sako. There are lots of horror stories about these Browning rifles due to "salt wood" which refers to wood rushed to use that had salt introduced to speed drying. This resulted in many of "those" rifles showing signs of rust due to the salt leeching out of the wood. However, being a Sako produced rifle, you should not have any of the salt wood issues. While to me these rifles should mirror pre '64 M70s values, they don't. A rifle like you described is worth from what I see online, $1,000-$1500. If the chambering is very rare, more.

Thanks TNHunter. Yes, I did read about the salt water Brownings and appreciate your response. Not sure if a .222 caliber is considered rare.

No matter their value as compared with other contemporary rifles, your Browning is a well made high quality rifle. Enjoy your ownership or if you decide to sell, in excellent condition as yours seems to be, they're not difficult to sell.

Thanks gain TNHunter. Unfortunately I have become disabled and no longer can walk without a walker. Trying to get a feel for the actual value in order to sell.

444 Magnum

This rifle, if the 1964 date code is correct, would be pre-salt. I have a Browning dates of manufacture book by Madis but I still can't decifer most of them. The salt years are 1966-1972 iirc. Condition is very good. The gold paint on the trigger guard and floor plate appears to have all flaked off. Not sure what brand scopes that is and how much value it and the hardware may add to the overall value. My values below do not include any value for the scope. The .222 caliber is priced in line with the standard FN calibers in the blue book. The value of these rifles (assuming like models and condition) is all about the caliber. I pulled up a couple of past listings. This model in .243 just sold on GI for $1299. In June, there was one like this rifle only with nicer checking (it had carving) in 222 magnum listed on GB for $1750 with no bids. .222 was once a popular caliber (and still is to some) but more modern calibers seem to be taking over. I would value the rifle in the $1200 to $1500 range in a private sale w/o the scope- possibly more in an auction but sellers fees would have to be considered. Hope this helps.

Beautiful well made rifle. Looks to be in great shape and well cared for. You should be able to easily pocket a grand or more for that gun. Good luck!

Have moved a few of these rifles, they don't fetch the high dollars most owners thing they are worth. This rifle and optic, in this condition may fetch something just north of $1,000 in the current market, if you price it to move. Then of course unless you own the GB account, you are going to pay 15 to 20% to your dealer to sell it, so the actual return to you will be less. Used scopes and mounts, like this Redfield don't add much to the value, maybe +100/150 unless it is a Leupold that carriers it warranty with it. 222 is not rare, the cartridge is technically obsolete, not attractive to most folks, and adds no additional value, may detract from value actually IMO.

Thanks very much to all the great insight and your information. I truly appreciate all the help.

Another place to sell more valuable firearms is Rock Island Auction. They have some of the Tom Selleck collection up in the current one.

BAR Mark II Safari

BAR Mark II Safari

$1,229.99 - $1,849.99 MSRP

The BAR MK II Safari is the ultimate sporting autoloader, featuring the time-honored combination of fine walnut, a precision machined steel receiver and a hammer forged barrel. Classic in looks and contemporary in performance, the BAR MK II Safari is the hunting rifle that sets the standard for every other autoloader on the planet with accuracy, speed and a caliber selection unmatched by any other hunting semi-auto. This magnificent rifle will make autoloading enthusiasts out of the most skeptical riflemen.

The Browning BAR sporting version is certainly a distinct and separate rifle from the military BAR M1918, but its design is the result of the understanding and expertise that started with John M. Browning. His grandson, Bruce Browning, was the driving force behind today's BAR. A large team of automatic firearms experts at the FN factory in Belgium also played a key role in its development. This group of designers, lead by Marcel Olinger, began serious work on the project code named "Carbine 66," with full-scale development and testing done throughout 1966 in preparation for an official 1967 product launch. Both the history and the efficiency of this amazing rifle is unequaled among autoloading rifles.

NOTE: Unless specifically listed as included with a firearm, accessories shown such as scopes, optical sights, rings, ring mounts, optic rails, bipod rails, ammunition, etc. are NOT included. Accessories are available at authorized Browning dealers and  here on Browning.com.

I've located a very nice Browning/Sako Safari grade .222 for sale, but can't determine whether it was a "salt" model or not. (I don't think the seller would be willing to take it out of the stock and inspect it.) However, I do have the serial number, and, if I could establish the date of manufacture, this would help. As I understand it, the salt guns were made between 1965 and 1971 (correct me if I'm wrong about that). The serial number is: 712Y4. Can anyone date this rifle? Thanks.

SP, Y4 was made in 1964 (per the 4) and the "Y" means it is a Sako L461 action Browning Safari. And the 712 is the gun number for that year. The salt wood problem started in 1966, peaked around 69 to 1970, and encountered on occasion until 1975. It is thought the salt problem was totally gone by 1976, but due to stocks laying in the back of the bin, very rarely a salt gun shows up after 75.

Many thanks, douglastwo. That really helps--and makes the rifle worth considering. Had there been doubt, I wouldn't consider it. Just out of curiosity, what was the effect of the salt stocks? Rusting and pitting of the outside of the barrel and action?

You should ask for the standard inspection period with the right to remove the barreled action from the stock to confirm the stock is original to the rifle. Browning made this easy because they stamped the serial number in the barrel channel. Stocks do break and I've heard of a few cases where the replacement stock was salty. Long story short, Browning was running out of stock blanks and found a large supply (said to be 300,000 blanks, which seems like a stretch to me) of blanks that they decided to expedite the cure time by using the neat process of stacking the green blanks on pallets and covering the pallets with salt to draw the water out. They say it worked fast, but unfortunately they found out the hard way what salt residue does to gun metal.

Ask the seller to simply remove one of the buttplate screws. This is the quickest and simplest test because the screw threads are totally exposed to raw wood and are among the quickest parts to show corrosion.

I've always regarded the Safari as being approximately the equivalent in quality and price to the Sako Deluxe. Of course with any two comparables that will vary with wood grain, caliber, and scarcity (don't count of buying a Safari .284 for the price of a Sako Deluxe .243!) The exquisitely stepped and contoured Pencil Barrel of the Safaris is hugely appealing to me, but they are very light and whippy and normally won't shoot as accurately as the Vixens (or Foresters) with the more typical sporter contour.

I think that's right about the overall quality of the Browning Sakos and the Sako Deluxes, although I prefer the more rounded stock lines of the Brownings, as well as their checkering patterns. Really just a matter of personal preference; the Sako Deluxes were and are beautiful rifles. I'm more interested in the Browning Sako models that Browning referred to as "heavy barrel," although their barrels weren't anywhere near as heavy as the HB Sakos of the period, mic'ing only about .625 at the muzzle. They too have that beautifully stepped and contoured barrel design, although with less step-down than the PBs. Stonecreek, do you (or anyone else) have any thoughts about or experience with these HB Browning Sakos with respect to their accuracy? One of the things holding me back from getting one is the fact that there appears to be no aftermarket trigger available for the L461 action. I'd like to have a trigger that I could adjust down to mere ounces, like the one on my A1 6 PPC HB.

stonecreek said: Indeed I do have experience with the Browning Safari HB. I own one in .243 and it has always exhibited gilt-edged accuracy. I used to take it to the prairie dog fields before I figured out that the small calibers were more fun (and kicked a lot less!) Made a few 500+ yard shots with it. These days I use it to entertain guests by shooting at 2-liter soda bottles on a hillside between 700 and 800 yards from my shooting bench. The store brand orange diet soda makes a spectacular plume of orange spray when hit squarely, even at 800 yards. It has never had any problem grouping in the half-MOA range on 100 yard paper. I've used a few different bullets in it, but shoot almost exclusively 70 grain Ballistic Tips these days. Also, I have a friend who owns an HB Safari in .22-250. It's also a real shooter. The only true target-style trigger for the L-series actions is the old Canjar, now out of production. You can run across one occasionally, but they are pricey. Click to expand...

Browning Sako Safari .222 Rem. Twist Rate

I'm interested in a Browning Sako-action Safari model in .222 Rem. (1964 manufacture). My question is: Is there information anywhere about the twist that these rifles had? I suspect it's probably 1-14, but I'm not sure of this. Thanks in advance for any help.

Fletch, I did not purchase one. As for my original question, all research points to a 1:14 twist in those early Sakos and Sako-Brownings.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

R ussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.
