Sample a variety of authentic Thai food, cooked freshly on site by our wonderful team of cooks. Take note of any favourite dishes as you’ll have the opportunity to learn some culinary secrets later this evening. Find your bearings around camp and explore your luxury canvas tent before getting ready for adventure.
Travel through time by canoe. Ready to see more of the stunning rainforest? There’s no better way than by boat. Take a seat in one of our canoes and look for tropical wildlife while a local river guide paddles you down the Sok River. You’ll be venturing into areas of primary rainforest, some of which has changed very little over thousands of years and is thought to be the oldest in existence.
An Elephant Experience like no other. From your canoe on the river, you’ll head to the chain-free elephant park where you’ll learn more about Thai elephants and our Elephant Conservation Project, before heading into the park to meet the pachyderms up close. Here, you’ll not only get to see one of these gentle giants but have the opportunity to touch and feed them in a respectful, ethical setting.
The elephants here live in a natural environment and are not forced to entertain or perform. Instead, you’ll prepare and feed them their lunch, then observe them playing with each other and splashing in their elephant pool. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is sure to leave you spellbound.
Time to relax. After an action-packed day of exciting activities, retire to your luxurious safari tent at Elephant Camp for a well-earned hot shower. Optional entertainment this evening includes a dance performance by children at the local school, a movie screening, or a chance to improve your kitchen skills with a Thai cooking demonstration.
Alternatively, put your feet up and relax on your private porch, soaking in the vista of the tropical rainforest and mountainous jungle. The Jungle Explorer’s Club Bar will be open for business this evening, so if you want to add a cocktail into the mix, you’ll be in good hands.
Prepare for tomorrow’s adventures. At 8:00 pm you’ll enjoy dinner, set in the idyllic jungle-side location of the camp. The atmosphere is incomparable to anything you have experienced before. With that fantastic end to your evening, you’ll be ready to retire to your safari tent, where a deep, linen-bedecked bed awaits you.
Luxury in the rainforest. Your room comes with all of the comforts you’d expect from a hotel, including hot water, a private en-suite with a Western toilet, reading lights, and tea/coffee making facilities. All tent openings are equipped with mosquito nettings in addition to canvas flaps, so you can rest easy knowing you won’t have any insects joining you overnight; snuggled under layers of warm blankets, you can truly experience the best of wild tropical rainforest and luxury accommodation, combined.
A new day dawns. Forget the intrusive alarm clock, this morning you’ll be gently woken by birdsong and the sounds of the rainforest awakening. Pour yourself a tea or coffee to enjoy on your verandah before having breakfast at your leisure.
Cheow Larn Lake: the adventure awaits. Today you will venture out by long-tail boat to explore everything that Cheow Larn Lake has to offer. Traverse the turquoise waters and marvel at the towering, rainforest-covered mountains that line its shores. This lake is the life source for much of the native wildlife, so keep a close eye out in case of a chance spotting of an Asian ox, wild elephant or clouded leopard.
If you cast your gaze into the canopy above, you’ll be treated to a bird-watchers paradise; with a huge array of tropicals birds and monkeys that call this area home, you will marvel as the treetops come alive before your very eyes.
Paradise just got even better. After your morning spent gliding across emerald waters, it’s time to head to Rainforest Camp, Elephant Hills’ incredible floating village of luxury tented accommodation. With all of the creature comforts you experienced in Elephant Camp, Rainforest Camp also boasts panoramic views, private kayaks, and a lakeside verandah from which you can watch the world pass by. Here you’ll have a delicious buffet lunch of Thai dishes prepared fresh and in-house, before setting off for the next adventure.
Channel your inner explorer. After refuelling, it’s time to explore the jungle on foot, experiencing a part of our world practically untouched by time. While the trek isn’t strenuous, it can be steep and slippery at times, so please speak to your guide if you are feeling at all concerned. However, we can’t stress enough that this walk isn’t a test of stamina or endurance, instead, it’s a unique opportunity to observe the native ecology in one of our planet’s oldest areas of rainforest.
From giant hardwood trees to exotic orchids, palms, ferns and bamboo; to the thousands of species of wildlife that live here; a slow walk of discovery through the rainforest gives you a true insight into the natural world.
A well earned rest. As the sun starts to lower over the ancient limestone cliffs surrounding you, collapse into a deckchair on your lakeside patio to enjoy the sunset, or freshen up with one last swim, straight off your deck, before you prepare for dinner and bed. Another delicious, freshly made Thai meal of authentic local produce awaits you this evening, so enjoy the feast before retiring under the canopy of stars – photos don’t do it justice.
Day 3: Nature at its finest. An untouched paradise.
Make the most of each moment. With your time at Elephant Hills coming to an end, today is your final day to create memories of this tropical paradise to take away with you. Start your day listening to the gibbons as they call to each other in the forest canopy, then sit on your lakeside balcony with a warming tea or coffee as you watch the sunrise, clearing the settled mist from the water.
What will the day bring? How about a refreshing dip in the lake? Or exploring the lake by kayak with your loved one? Perhaps you simply want to sit and soak it all in one last time. Whatever you choose, enjoy every second.
Binoculars at the ready. After fuelling your body and soul for the day, join your guide on a canoe safari into the hidden channels of Cheow Larn Lake. Keep your eyes open as you may spot an exotic hornbill bird in the treetops, or even a leopard stalking through the trees. We can’t guarantee what animals will make an appearance on the day, but there’s certainly no shortage of wildlife in Khao Sok National Park.
Rest and reflect. With the end of your tour fast approaching, there is time for one last meal with the group, served at your home-from-home, the floating Rainforest Camp. Share food, photos, stories, laughter and contact details with your fellow travellers, before returning to the pier to be transported to your next destination.
Your holiday with Elephant Hills may be over, but the memories of your magical time spent at the Rainforest Camp will last a lifetime.

- Jungle Safaris
a guide to jungle safaris in Africa
Jungle safaris offer the optimal safari experience for those who enjoy getting up close and personal with nature – experiencing both flora and fauna first-hand. There’s always the hope of something of interest lurking on the other side of tall grass or hanging in the branches above.
And African jungles, in particular, are world-renowned for their primates, offering the opportunity to see all sorts of African monkeys , and perhaps more excitingly chimpanzee and gorilla trekking experiences .
What exactly is a jungle?
Nearly everyone has an idea about how they’d define the biome, and most of them probably do have some correct information.
The best way to think of a jungle would be a densely forested area with tangled vegetation and underbrush in a tropical climate. Jungles are very similar to rainforests, but are drier than their relatives and don’t have as much skyscraping vegetation.
They are areas completely unhampered by humans and thus provide one of the most exhilarating opportunities to see jungle animals in their natural habitat. Read more about jungles .
Where are Africa’s jungles?
As you might imagine, jungle safaris can take you into the heart of some of Africa’s most exotic locales. The majority of Africa’s jungles are focused close to the center of the continent, between the Sahara and Kalahari deserts, but pockets of jungle can also be found in Uganda and Tanzania in East Africa.
As with most wildlife, jungle animals are dependent on nourishment from water to live. Because of the difficulty of spotting wildlife in dense jungles, the majority of jungle safaris focus on wildlife spotting from or around water sources. This usually means spending time close to one Africa’s rivers or the surroundings of one of the many great lakes dotting the Rift Valley which form part of the borders between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. The one significant exception here is when taking a jungle safari to enjoy an ape trekking experience where venturing deep into the jungle – and even up mountains or volcanos – is required.
Here’s our pick of the top national parks to experience a true jungle safari:
Parc National Des Volcans is a dense, wet jungle on the upper reaches of towering volcanos. Made famous by Dianne Fossey and her life’s work on the resident gorilla families.
Nyungwe National Park Dense, mountainous virgin forests with waterfalls, chimpanzees, and a host of smaller monkeys. There’s also a snazzy new jungle canopy walkway which gives a whole new take on the jungle safari.
Murchison Falls National Park has the Murchison Falls and Nile river running through thick forest and savanna with wildlife viewing not limited to the big five. A classic jungle safari whether you’re in a jeep or trekking.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park Steep mountain rain forest with wide altitude span offering the ultimate jungle safari with the chance of coming face to face with a gorilla.
Kibale Forest National Park is made up of lush tropical rain forest in an area of outstanding natural beauty and habituated chimpanzee families to enliven your jungle safari trek.
Gombe National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park
What to see on a jungle safari
There are all manner of jungle-dwelling animals in Africa – from the bongo to the African forest elephant. But probably the most alluring aspect of a jungle safari is the presence of our primate relatives. Monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees can all be seen in jungle environments in Uganda , Tanzania , Rwanda , and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Gorilla trekking on a jungle safari
Spot mountain gorillas on your jungle safari
There’s no creature on the face of the earth that has piqued more human interest than our evolutionary ancestors, the gorilla. Gorilla trekking is the best opportunity to observe the majesty of our primate relatives up close and personal, and in their natural habitat.
With dwindling numbers and habitat, gorilla safaris where you’re virtually guaranteed a sighting of a habituated gorilla are limited to just three national parks in Uganda and Rwanda. Gorilla trekking in the Democratic Republic of Congo is possible, but an on/off affair, and not advised at this time due to security conditions in the country.
Tips for gorilla trekking
- A jungle environment tends to bring out even more bugs and flying insects than other types of safari , so be sure to have enough insect repellent.
- The trek to find gorillas can be a long and tiring one through dense rain forest, so ensure you’re well prepared – strong waterproof footwear and long sleeves and trousers are recommended to avoid scratches from plant life and the ever-present jungle ants.
- Garden gloves may sound silly but will prove useful when trekking through overgrown brambles and thorns.
- The hour that you get to spend with a gorilla family when you finally encounter them goes incredibly fast. Make sure you take time out of photographing them to simply watch and admire them.
- If you’re ill you won’t be allowed to trek to the gorillas, as illnesses can be shared. You’ll need to arrange a doctor’s note for a full permit refund in Uganda or a 50% permit refund in Rwanda.
- In order not to be viewed as a potential threat you should speak only very quietly when in the presence of a gorilla and don’t make any sudden movements.
- If a gorilla charges at you the advice is to crouch down in a submissive position until they calm down – never turn your back and run!
Best time to enjoy a jungle safari
If you’re heading to central Africa for a safari you should do so between December and March, during the dry season. The rainy season from May to September makes travel extremely difficult, with most dirt roads closed due to rain and mud. Flooding is common in the rainy season (particularly around rivers), and the risk of getting malaria is increased.
Jungle safari tips
Bloodborne illnesses are extremely common from mosquitos, flies, wasps, spiders, and other jungle insects. Companies that offer jungle safaris may request specific immunizations before your safari. Either way, you should seek professional medical advice and take proper medical precautions before you travel to Africa.
A jungle environment tends to bring out even more bugs and flying insects than other types of safari , so be sure to be well-stocked with insect repellent.
If you’re planning to do any walking in the jungle, long sleeves and trousers are recommended to avoid scratches from plant life. Read more on what to wear on safari .
Never travel alone in the jungle – always travel in groups and hire a guide.
Avoid using a flash on your camera if taking photos as it can ward off the wildlife. Want to know how to take the perfect wildlife photo ?

When you stay in the same place that Sir David Attenborough stayed , you know you’re on the best wildlife safari in Borneo. And when your accommodation is on National Geographic’s list of Unique Lodges of the World , you know it’s something special.
Scott and I did this and had the best wildlife safari in Borneo. Staying in the state of Sabah, we did the Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari tour for 3 days and 2 nights. We stayed in the world famous Sukau Rainforest Lodge in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. From start to finish, everything about this Borneo trip, lodge, region and nature was indescribable. I’m going to try and describe our stay though!
This is my detailed review of Borneo Eco Tours including everything from the itinerary, wildlife, activities, prices, extra details to my personal thoughts about the trip. This is the most responsible tour company in Malaysian Borneo and I would highly recommend going with this Borneo travel agency if you want to ethically enjoy the wildlife of a Borneo safari for 3 days.
If you are thinking of booking one of the best Borneo tours and have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

How to Get to Sandakan, Sabah
To travel to Borneo, we took the 3 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan with Air Asia the day before our trip began. We wanted to be sure that we would be in Sandakan so we arrived the night before.
When we arrived, we got a Grab ride to our hotel for 7 MYR. I highly recommend downloading the Grab app if you are travelling Malaysia because it is so convenient, safe and you know you aren’t being ripped off. If you download the app , use my referral code, GRABHDTRAVELS and we will both get discount on our rides.
We stayed in a budget hotel called My Dream Hotel and Borneo Eco Tours were picking us up from here the morning of the trip. We stayed at My Dream Hotel in Sandakan booked via booking.com . It was the perfect accommodation for one night with lots of restaurants around and close to the airport. I’d recommend staying here if you are in Sandakan.
To reserve your accommodation, use this search box to take you straight to My Dream Hotel:
When we checked in to the hotel, Borneo Eco Tours had called the hotel to inform them of the time they would pick us up. This was the first example of Borneo Eco Tours Sandakan going above and beyond for their guests . As promised, a guide and driver from Borneo Eco Tours picked us up from our hotel and took us on to our first activity of the Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari tour.
Our Borneo Eco Tours Guide
We were in a group of 12 who were guided by a knowledgeable and friendly guide named Nexter. Nexter took us around each centre, travelled with us to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, drove the boats on our cruises and most importantly, answered every question about wildlife we had. Nexter was so helpful and his knowledge about the lodge, Sabah, Borneo and wildlife was beyond impressive.
The best part, though, was his passion and enthusiasm for conservation, sustainability and wildlife in general. It was heart-warming to see. I heard from other groups that all of the guides had this passion and knowledge too which reflects the wonderful job that Borneo Eco Tours and Sukau Lodge are doing.
My favourite line from Nexter was when he explained how the mother teaches her young about which fruits can and cannot be eaten. I asked, ‘how does the Orang-utan know which fruits are safe to eat?’ His reply was ‘it’s the magic of nature’.
What to Take
- Take your own toiletries
- Buy a reusable poncho/mac with a hood. Something like this one from Amazon.
- Strong insect repellant! I wore long sleeved tops and trousers for cruises but more skin was showing at night and I got a grand total of 4 bites on my stay.
- Take a refillable, metal bottle for the bus journeys and throughout your stay. This is the one I use.
- Take binoculars.
- Use a good camera. The wildlife is far away that you need binoculars so you’ll need a good camera to capture these precious moments. I used OSMO Pocket and it did the perfect job. It was small enough too that when it rained a little, I just had it below my poncho to cover it. Buy the Osmo Pocket here and you won’t regret it. I also took 2 memory cards with me because I shot so much footage and didn’t want to run out of space. You can buy the Osmo Pocket & Expansion Kit (comes with a memory card) through this link.
Day 1 of the Best Wildlife Safari in Borneo
Everywhere and everything that I mention below is guided and transported by Borneo Eco Tours employees. They took good care of us from start to finish.
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – Borneo Safari Stop 1
Covering a rainforest area of 43 sq km (10,610 acres), Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre is a conservation, established in 1964 and open to the public. The centre is owned by Sabah Wildlife Department and co-funded by them, tourists to the centre and by the charity, Orangutan Appeal UK. This is one of the best things to do Borneo because it’s a chance to see Orangutans in the wild.
When we arrived, we learned about the centre through Ruth, a worker from Orangutan Appeal UK and then watched an educational movie about the plight of Orang-utans and the conservation work in Sabah.
There are around 60-80 Orang-utans living freely in the reserve. It is not a zoo. The video and staff make it clear that there is not allowed to be any human contact, you must keep a distance, you must keep to the boardwalk and you are not allowed to take any bags in with you at all.
There is an Orangutan Nursery where the trained rangers look after orphaned Orang-utans to rehabilitate them in the hope that they one day be released into the wild. They are orphaned due to illegal logging, deforestation and being kept as pets.
If you want to ethically see an Orangutan, here is the place to go.
Note: Borneo Eco Tours allow you to leave your belongings on the bus and the driver stays with the bus. There are lockers and keys (free of charge) at the centre though if you want to lock your belongings. Also, there is a camera charge of 10 MYR.
Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
Straight afterwards, we went over to the Sun Bear Conservation centre . Sun Bears are the smallest bears in the world and only found in South East Asia. There are currently 43 rescued Sun Bears at the centre, all of which are going through rehabilitation to release them back to the wild.
One Sun Bear was released to wild in April 2019 and the last time he was located was a month later. During which, the Sun Bear had travelled 35km. This is evidence that the rehabilitation works and he has survived in the wild.
Lunch and Journey to Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Afterwards, we headed for lunch in the form of a buffet with a selection of fish/chicken/tofu with rice, stir fry, potato curry and salad. There was f ree water and coffee on offer.
An hour later we headed to our bus for our overland journey to Sukau Rainforest Lodge. There is free wifi on board the bus and refillable drinking water tanks.
The bus ride was comfortable and easy which took about 2.5 hours. We arrived at the Kinabatangan River where we boarded a small boat ride. After 5 minutes, in the horizon we could see the impressive lodge perched over the river bank waiting to greet us. Our luggage followed behind us.
On arrival, we were given the warmest welcome from the smiling staff and directed to ‘Gomantong Hall’ for check-in and housekeeping. We were given freshen-up towels and welcome drinks with bamboo straws. The straws were the first glimpse of the sustainability methods practiced at the lodge . We were given our room keys and our luggage was waiting on our doorsteps for us.
Note: All other drinks are not included in the price across the entire tour. For example, a tiger beer at lunch was 8 MYR and in the lodge was 18 MYR.

About Sukau Rainforest Lodge
Founded in 1994, Sukau Rainforest Lodge was an idea by the founder of Borneo Eco Tours, Albert Teo. Teo recognised the interest from tourists about the Kinabatangan River and decided an eco company needed an eco lodge. To build such a lodge, the company needed to buy land. The book written by Albert Teo and Carol Patterson, Saving Paradise is dedicated to Kari Bin Ongong, ‘the one man who had the courage to step out of his comfort zone to provide a livelihood for his people.’
To learn more about the lodge, you can buy Saving Paradise from Amazon here .
The link between the lodge and local people is so strong that 80% of staff are from the local area. One of the guides informed me that the lodge would not be what it is today without the knowledge and support of the local people. The lodge’s dedication to teaching locals and tourists aligns with my concept of learning about our world. I felt a connection to this place and learned so much more than I expected.
A strong policy of the accommodation is sustainability. You can see it in every corner of the place. From zero plastic and solar panels to electric motors on the boats to minimise noise pollution. They give out scholarships to locals and therefore improve employment as well as tree planting schemes. To read more about the lodge’s sustainability, read their policies here .
The lodge boasts 2 swimming pools, relaxing lobbies with free wifi, free water stations, a souvenir shop, a few bars, a restaurant on the river and stunning boardwalks. You can use all of the amenities and enjoy the serenity of surrounding nature. They also have ‘resident’ orangutans , a mother and a baby who are occasionally spotted around the lodge. The lodge do not feed or interact with the orang-utans but the apes return because the lodge is in the mother’s territory. The apes do have names though, the mother is called Lucky and the baby is called Day because if you get a chance to see them, it’s your lucky day!
What Exactly does it mean to be a Part of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World?
Nat Geo have a list of Unique Lodges of the World. There are only 55 lodges on this list. Sukau Rainforest Lodge is one of them. It’s also the only one in Malaysia and there are only 5 in the whole of Asia. And I stayed here! When you arrive and you see the lodge on the banks of the mighty river, you can instantly see how it has made the list. Here, y ou are brought into the present amongst beautiful nature.
A guide informed me that to become part of Nat Geo’s list, there are over 50 things the lodge needed to have. Protecting natural and cultural heritage and sustainability are two of them which the lodge has smashed out of the park. Sukau Rainforest Lodge made Nat Geo’s lists of the best places to get face-to-face with wildlife and best lodges to visit in the fall.
Sir David Attenborough
Borneo has featured in several of Sir David Attenborough TV shows. Sir David Attenborough and BBC crew stayed at Sukau Rainforest Lodge in 2011 while they were filming. More about the boat they used in ‘Dinner by Candle Light and Bar’ section below.
A few years ago, Sir David helped stop a bridge being built over the Kinabatangan River. Read all about what happened here.
One of the villas has proudly been named after him.
Other famous guests include the Prince of Denmark and Dame Judy Dench. Some of the staff were excited to tell me about the times where they met the guests. They said that Sir David Attenborough’s voice is exactly the same in real life.
Afternoon River Cruise of Borneo Wildlife Tours
Just after enjoying our afternoon tea and doughnuts, we headed out on the mighty 560km-long Kinabatangan River for our first of 3 included Borneo Jungle Safari. After only a few minutes in the boat, we already found Proboscis monkeys high in the trees. You really need to get the binoculars out for these animals and see the size of their noses. The ones with large noses are male and the ones with pointed noses are female. We seen an array of other wildlife too from birds flying overhead to crocs basking on the banks.
Later on, we found another group of Proboscis monkeys and it was clear who the alpha male was. His thighs were enormous and he sat high in the tree as the others went one by one to jump to another tree. Each monkey took their time, sussing out the jump and waiting a while after the last had gone. All of a sudden, this loud rushing of trees happened so quickly that if you blinked, you missed it. It was the alpha male who, with no hesitation, made the giant leap proving his experience and dominance over the group. It was fascinating to watch.
Dinner by Candle Light and Bar
When it’s dinner time, you are alerted by three rings of the gong that vibrate throughout the grounds and create a buzz amongst guests. Buffet dinner offers local meals using local produce and is served on the actual boat that Sir David Attenborough used in his BBC documentary.
In your room, you are given traditional Bornean sarongs to wear for dinner time. You’re given a demonstration on how to apply them upon check-in.
It was a truly unique experience to wear traditional clothing, eat local food with candle-light, looking over the mighty river while dazzling red and orange lightening filled the dark sky in the distance.
Optional Activity – What is Sukau Rainforest Lodge?
After dinner, in the ‘Ape Gallery’ room, there is a projector and screen along with one of the guides waiting for guests. The presenter was Nexter and he gave us so much information about the history and projects of Sukau Rainforest Lodge. It was a great insight into where we were staying and I’d highly recommend taking half an hour to listen to this discussion. He informed us that part of the money spent by tourists go into conservation and he personally thanked us for coming to Sukau Rainforest Lodge . Very humbling.
In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle…
…things come out at night! We had some drinks in the Gecko Bar and lots of geckos were there to join us. As were mosquitos, beetles and bats. The bats, we should be thankful for, because they kill up to 1000 mosquitos per night !!
At night, the sounds coming from the wildlife in the rainforest remind you that you’re in their home. From the owls to the Orangutan’s call, they were out there. At night too, you can hear what we assume were macaques running across the roof of our rooms. It was so cool!
Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari – Day 2
The rainforest awakens.
… as do we! After making all that noise the night before, everything else living in the jungle wakes up before the crack of dawn and we didn’t want to miss a second of it.
We had a wake-up call around 5.25am and a quick bite to eat while it was still dark. Then we waited at the jetty to start our 2 hour Kinabatangan River cruise. The sun was rising and the rainforest was awakening. It was gorgeous for our river safari in Borneo.
We went up the Kinabatangan River and toward Kelenanap Ox-Bow lake to spot wildlife. We managed to spot 3 baby crocs basking in the morning sun, a huge lizard, a smaller lizard and a tiny lizard poking his head out of a hole. Next up were more Proboscis monkeys waking up with energy to swing amongst the trees as well as macaques close by. I looked back behind the boat and the birds were so pretty flying on the horizon.
We then returned to a full breakfast waiting for us.
Hornbill Boardwalk Guided Tour
At 11am, we joined an educational walking tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk spotting more macaques and birds, and learning about the trees surrounding us.
Optional Activity – Learn About Orang-utans
After some free time, there is a free talk to learn about orang-utans. I cannot emphasise enough how important and useful it is to attend this talk.
This information CANNOT be found on the internet because its all in-house research conducted. This is unmissable. Out of 70 guests at the lodge, only 6 of us went to this talk. I believe they missed out on this informative presentation about the orang-utans.
Kinabatangan River Cruise in the Afternoon
The afternoon wildlife once again did not disappoint. We saw long tail macaques running in groups of 40/50, all hanging in the trees with some curious and coming closer to us. While cruising, we saw impressive Hornbills flying over us and further down the river we seen 3 families of Proboscis monkeys. Then, along came some long tail macaques who disturbed one of the Proboscis monkey families. It seemed to then be a case of showing off with the different animals on either side of the river jumping to and from trees, trying to out-do the ones on the other side. It was entertaining. Then we had a few moments of utter silence and the peacefulness I felt, was something remarkable. I felt in the moment and it was thanks to nature.
Back at the lodge, on the cue of the gong, we had a scrumptious dinner of local food, sitting with our group and reflecting on the day before getting ready for the night cruise.
Optional Activity – River Cruise by Night
We paid extra (80 MYR each) to go on a night-time river cruise. The night was a completely different experience to the day. It felt both eerie and calm at the same time. Out on the river was pitch black with just the moon reflecting on the small ripples. Your guide drives the boat and shines a torch, looking for any wildlife. Their eyes are so good because they spot the smallest of creatures that we easily missed. We seen all sorts of nocturnal creatures. We didn’t manage to see an owl but another group did… that’s nature.
I’d recommend taking the night tour for another unique experience. While we were there we said to ourselves, when will we get another chance to cruise the Kinabatangan River at night?
Learning from Sukau Rainforest Lodge Staff
Everything runs so smoothly and the staff don’t let you lift a finger. Even the small details that make you smile a little bit more and a homely feel. The employees are the ones that make the lodge that extra bit special. Nothing is too much for them and they are always around to help you with anything.
We were also welcomed by the rainforest when we had a huge downpour of rain. But as quick as it came, it went. The staff quickly came around to give out umbrellas. It’s the little touches.
One of my favourite moments was when we finally realised what the loud bangs were. Since we arrived, we kept hearing this loud thud which we assumed was probably work going on somewhere. Only when we sat at the bar chatting with the staff did they tell us what the bangs were. It was mango called ‘Belunu’ falling from the trees and hitting the ground or the roof of huts. I couldn’t believe that a fruit could make that noise but when one of the staff collected the fruit for us to see, it was quite large to be fair.
It is a sought after and rare fruit that only comes once every four years. We clearly picked the best time to visit Borneo. We were also allowed to try a small bit (so delicious) but not too much because we were drinking alcohol and the two aren’t great when mixed.
Thank you staff members for giving us this extra experience.
Day 3 of the Ethical Wildlife Trip in Borneo
Checking out of the jungle.
One last glorious breakfast in the unique lodge and it was time to say goodbye to our temporary home. The tour went so fast and I’d love to have had another few days there! We paid up our bill and started the journey back to Sandakan which took about 2 hours. Lots of staff were on the jetty to wave us off and I felt a sense of gratefulness for experiencing this and meeting these wonderful people.
Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sandakan
Back in Sandakan, we had lunch at Sabah Hotel which was very tasty before driving 40 minutes to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. We purposefully booked a later flight so we could enjoy the activities in Sandakan.
The Rainforest Discovery Centre has a sky tower to savour the forest from a high view point. It has an indoor centre too where you can learn a lot about flora, fauna and wildlife in Sabah. This is one of the best things to do in Sandakan.
Sandakan Memorial Park
Next on the itinerary, was visiting the Sandakan memorial park for remembrance of World War II, Prisoners of War. This was a harrowing experience and something you must do when visiting Sandakan, out of remembrance for all those who lost their lives. There was a total of 2,500 prisoners, of which only 6 survived. This story might never have been known if it was not for those 6 survivors.
The park has a serenity about it and is a good place to remember what happened to the victims during the war.
Ending the Best Tour to do in Borneo
All good things must come to an end. We were transferred to the airport to board our flight out of Borneo. I have to admit it was a little sad to leave such a beautiful island. We will, definitely, be back. We went in the month of August and I believe this to be the best time to visit Sandakan as the weather was great for us as it didn’t rain too much and wasn’t too hot.
Wildlife Round-Up
We are lucky enough to have seen a vast amount of wildlife during our safari. When you’re facing nature, there are no guarantees and this is evidence of ethical tourism. The company/centre/lodge do not feed the wildlife (unless part of the rehabilitation process) or entice/use them for tourism in any way.
In three days we managed to see: dozens of plants and flowers, birds such as Heron, Kingfisher, Hornbill, Bats, Oriental Darter, lizards, mice, geckos and beetles. We were lucky to see Orang-utans, Sun Bears, Proboscis Monkeys, Long-tail and short-tail Macaques and turtles. And for one of the dangerous animals in Borneo, the Crocodile? We seen 5 juvenile crocs!
We didn’t see Pygmy Elephants but that’s nature. I’m grateful for what we did manage to see, especially those only found in Borneo and the ones that are endangered. Sukau Rainforest Lodge is where to stay in Borneo for wildlife.

Mainly famous for tiger sighting, South Indian jungles also offer you an opportunity to see many other endangered species like the Nilgiri Tahr, Lion-Tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Langur.
1. Bandipur Tiger Reserve
Bandipur, Nagarhole, Wayanad (Kerala) and Mudumalai (Tamil Nadu) are four national parks spread across 3 states of India. Together this interconnected group of national parks form the largest free habitat of tigers in India and the whole world. Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Mudumalai, aka Masinagudi are so close that they are almost like a continuous stretch of forest for a layman.
In the 6-hour jeep safari in Bandipur Tiger Reserve by Jungle Lodge & Resorts , you will enter deep into the forests in search of the evasive striped beauty. The safari is conducted in two phases. There is one 3-hour safari in the evening and one 3-hour safari in the next morning.

The thrill of riding through the dusty forest, watching the spectacular sunset amidst the sound of birds and looking out for peacocks, deer, monkeys and other members of the beautiful forest ecosystem of Karnataka is a memorable experience.

2. Nagarhole National Park
Also in Karnataka, Nagarhole National Park is separated from the Bandipur Tiger Reserve by the resplendent Kabini river. Located at the border of Mysuru and Kodagu districts, Nagarhole is one of the most visited national parks in India. The forest of Nagarhole is home to spotted deer, sambal, monkeys, leopards and many other indegeneous animals.
Check out the best places to visit in Karnataka – one of the most beautiful states of India.
While the park itself id beautiful and you have almost as much probability of spotting a tiger while driving through the forests as in Bandipur, the jungle safari has scope of improvements. The timings of Jungle safari are 6am to 8 am in the morning and 3pm to 5pm in the evening.
The bookings are managed by the Forest Department, and you can only book a one-hour jeep safari pr bus safari in the forest. You will be greeted by a herd of deer at the ticket counter itself and it’s hard to resist the urge to pet those beauties.
3. Periyar Tiger Reserve – a Lake Safari
Located in Idukki district of Kerala, Periyar Tiger Reserve is a great place to go for jungle safari. It is the Best managed Tiger Reserve among 50+ Tiger Reserves in the country according to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
The forest engulfs the beautiful Periyar Lake in Thekkady . Besides tiger, you get to see other indigenous species like the Sambhal Deer, elephants ,Nilgiri langur and the lion-tailed macaque.
There are a variety of jungle safari options in the Periyar reserve. The regular safari in the daytime can be on vans of jeeps. The highlight of a trip to Periyar Tiger Reserve is the opportunity to join the night patrol.
This is a regular night patrolling program in the fringes of the Eco development zone of the Tiger Reserve in the company of armed guards between 7 pm and 4 am (7pm-10, 10-1am, 1-4am).
You can also enjoy a relaxing safari in the lake or book a one-night or two-night camping at PTR. Check out all available activities for online booking here .

You can book a 2-hour jeep safari or a jungle camping excursion from the Sultan Bathery checkpost in Wayanad. You can also go there in your own car.
Places to stay:
Our stay at Sterling Wayanad at Sultan Bathery gave us an opportunity to explore the jungles by our car every day of our stay.
Rithu Holiday Cottages and tents gives you the most authentic jungle-camping experience in Muthanga.
5. Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu
Mudumalai National Park, also known as Masinagudi Tiger Reserve is located in Tamil Nadu. Besides tigers, these dense forests are home to giant elephants, antelopes and many indigenous species of the Western Ghats . Living in a cottage in the forests amidst deer and peacocks and going on a tiger safari is an experience of a lifetime.
Spanning 321 square kilometers at an elevation range of 850m – 1250m, in the Nilgiris, Masinagudi will mesmerize you with its beauty.
Van / Bus safari is organized every morning (6 am to 10 am) and evening (2pm to 6pm), each safari lasting only 30 minutes.
To increase the chances of seeing interesting wildlife you should book jeep safaris that are longer. Elephant safari is also an option in Masinagudi. Private vehicles are not allowed in safari zones.
Check out the best places to visit in Tamil Nadu .
6. Eravikulam National Park Safari – to see the Nilgiri Tahr
Nestled in the hills of Munnar, Eravikulam National Park has a mystic charm that will bewitch you all. Anamudi, the highest peak in South India is located right inside the park.
The park’s mesmerizing beauty is because of the mountains, the waterfalls and the pristine natural ecosystem. An ecosystem which was unfortunately disturbed and replaced with the aggressive commercialization and tea plantations by the British.
The ticket counter is bustling with people all the time as it is one of the biggest attractions in the Idukki region. The safari bus simply takes you to the hilly forests and leaves you there to explore the park by yourself.
Vehicles are not allowed to enter beyond a point to maintain the sensitive biosphere.
So here you have the walking jungle safari. The 97 sq km park has three parts – the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are allowed to stroll only in the tourist area. Trek in the Kurinji trails covered with blossoms to spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and be awed at the sight of the majestic Lakkom Falls.
Don’t miss the Eraviulam National Park in your Munnar itinerary .

7. BR Hills
Biligiriranga Hills, popularly known as BR Hills is an elusive and enchanting forest in Karnataka. Located between Bangalore and Mysore , this could be one of the most visited jungles in India, but it is actually quite the opposite. Because tourism in the area is not as well-developed, footfall is less, and the jungle-feel is quite authentic.
Welcoming Ellis Veen from Backpack Adventures to share her experience at BR Hills
It was a rainy morning in BR hills . The wildlife sanctuary was lush and green and teeming with life. Our jeep was going slow on the muddy dirt roads through the dense forest. One time we even had to get out to remove fallen branches from the narrow jeep track.
The rainy season is maybe not the best time to go on a safari in India, but it is when the jungle of BR Hills truly comes alive. The constant drizzle did not take away the natural beauty of the monsoon greenery and the joy of spotting wildlife.
I was lucky to see wild boars, barking deer and chital deer and just as I was leaving BR Hills there was a group of elephants by the side of the road.
BR Hills is one of the lesser-known wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka. Although less popular than nearby Bandipur or Kabini, it is equally beautiful and with the same chances of spotting the elusive tiger or the Asian elephant that roams the forests. Being a bridge between the Eastern ghats and the Western ghats it is a biodiverse area of rich flora and fauna.
BR Hills has culture and history too. The local Biligiri Ranganathaswamy temple is an important place of worship for the local Soliga people and a pilgrimage site for Hindus.
With its scenic location on top of a hill it offers sweeping views over the BR Hills Wildlife sanctuary. Safari s are organized by the K.Gudi wilderness camp where you can sleep as well.

8. Dandeli Jungle Safari
Dandeli, located in the northern region of Karnataka is a great place for adventurists and nature-lovers. It is also very close to Goa and can be clubbed as at extension to your Goa itinerary.
Raksha shares her tips for Dandeli Jungle Safari
Designated as a tiger reserve, the town of Dandeli is a natural habitat for wildlife and is the second largest sanctuary in Karnataka state of India. Now called the Kali Tiger Reserve, the forest has abundant wild animals, reptiles, and birds.
Forests of Dandeli are made up of moist deciduous and semi-evergreen trees. The sanctuary is located on the banks of River Kali and is said to have about 13 to 14 tigers in the wild. It is also home for the rare black panthers.
The best time to visit Dandeli is between the months of October and May. Jungle safaris are operated twice during the day by the forest department.
The visitors can also take a coracle ride on the river to see freshwater crocodiles. And for adventure seekers, there is white water river rafting available with rapids of 3+ grades.
Dandeli has many accommodations catering for all kinds of travelers. There are home stays that provide amazing options for budget travelers and then there are resorts for luxury travelers.
Kali Wilderness Camp operated by Jungle Lodges is an excellent place to stay. As it is part of the government, preference for jungle safari rides is given to the guests of the camp.
Jungle Safari in India – Rest of India
I have only been to jungle safaris in the south. So, for the rest of India I reached out to the blogging community for their suggestions. North India has a diverse landscape with deserts, Himalayan forests, mangroves and more. The enriching experiences of these bloggers gave me new travel goals.
1. Jaldapara Jungle Safari
Welcome Soumya from Nature Diary to share his experiences:
The list of best jungle safari in India is incomplete without mentioning Jaldapara National Park in the northern part of West Bengal . After Kaziranga National Park in Assam, Jaldapara is the second-largest home for critically endangered one-horned rhinos in India.
At present, the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Limited ( WBFDCA ) arranges jeep safaris on five routes and elephant safaris on two routes across the national park.
If you love to enjoy the wilderness at its best, choose the elephant safari route from Hollong, an ecotourism destination in North Bengal. There are three times when the safari commences in the early morning: 5:50-6:30 AM, 6:30-7:30 AM, and 7:30-8.30 AM.
It is preferable to book the 1st slot as the forest looks most beautiful at this time. Please note that the jungle safari is open every day except Thursday.
During the safari , you can see animals like rhinos, Asiatic elephants, sambars, hog deer, barking deer, jungle cats, giant squirrels, porcupines, pangolins, pythons, etc. Over 240 species of bird species, including peacocks, hornbills, green pigeons, barbets, and parakeets, can be seen on the jungle safari . Overall, a jungle safari at Jaldapara National Park is worth every penny.
To enjoy nature to its fullest, you can stay in the Hollong forest bungalow overnight and book the next morning’s safari .
2. Ranthambore Jungle Safari
Located in Rajasthan, at the junction of two of the oldest mountain ranges – the Aravallis and Vindyas – Ranthambore forest offers the most picturesque setting for a wildlife safari.
Ranthambore is famous for tiger safari, but it is also a home to a large variety of birds and animals. Some of these are the sloth bear, leopard, Indian wolf, deer, fox, hyena and mongoose.
Sakshi , blogger at Tripleamommy shares her experience.
My husband and I love going to National Parks. Ranthmabore is our favorite – both for its proximity to Delhi and the high chances of tiger sighting. The first time we went to Ranthambore was in April 2009 and we stayed at a government guest house.
The facilities were basic but that’s not really important when you are on an adventure trip. We were lucky to spot the tiger on our second trip and I can still feel the excitement of that moment!
We had been roaming the dry plains in our jeep when suddenly in a distance, there was a cacophony of birds and screeching of monkeys! A tiger was approaching! Our jeep joined at least 8-10 other jeeps and canters that scrambled to that area to sight the tiger, when it appeared majestically on the horizon. The second time we went was with our entire family and this time we stayed at the Taj Vivanta – it is a lovely property and other than the tiger safaris, just the stay at the property was great fun! ther than the safaris, Ranthambore has a lovely fort that history lovers would love to visit – the picturesque ruins and the temple make for a great visit.
You can reach Ranthambore by train – get off at the Sawai Madhopur station and in most cases the hotel will send their jeep to pick you up from the station. If you are in Jaipur or Delhi – NCR, you can also enjoy a lovely road trip to Ranthambore.
Book admission to Ranthambore Jungle Safari here . You can also book a complete day trip package from Jaipur
Places to stay in Ranthambore
Ranthambore Regency – a 4-star sustainable resort close to the national park
Sawai Madhopur Lodge – a 5-star sustainable romantic resort by Taj Vivanta, 12km from the national park
Six Senses Fort Barwara – a fort transformed into a 5-star resort, 30-minute drive from the national park
3. Kanha Tiger Reserve Jungle Safari
Kanha tiger Reserve also known as the Kanha -Kisli National Park is the largest national park in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It encompasses an area of 940 sq km and is divided into two zones- Mandla and Balaghat.
Welcome Jon Duncan from Backpacking Man to share his tips for Kanha Tiger Reserve
The Kanha Tiger Reserve is one of the best places in India to spot tigers in the wild and also makes for a great jungle experience in India. In fact, the area was the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”, which says it all.
The obvious main thing to do in the area is to go on a day jeep safari through the reserve keeping an eye out for tigers, as well as lots of other wildlife such as deer and, if lucky, packs of wild dogs.
The driver of the jeep is accompanied by an expert ranger/guide who will be able to track animal prints on the ground to try and find the wildlife.
Note that there are elephant safaris available in the area which may seem adventurous, but these are not recommended as the elephants are not treated so well.
So, avoid that and promote ethical tourism and stick to going on a jeep safari which is actually the best way to see a lot more of the reserve anyway.

- Club Mahindra Kanha
4. Bhandavgarh Jungle Safari
Located in the Umaira district of Madhya Pradesh, India, Bhandavgarh National Park is a fantastic place for tiger safari. The core area of the park is 100 square-kilometers and is home to approximately 50 tigers.
Like Bandipur, there are two slots for 3-hour Jeep safaris, once at dawn, and again in late afternoon. The National Park has three main safari zones, namely – Tala Zone , Magadhi Zone and Khitauli Zone .
Tala Zone is the oldest and richest zone in terms of biodiversity.
One can chose between a jeep safari and an elephant safari at Bhandavgarh.
Once again, I could get Sakshi to share her experience in Bhandavgarh National Park.
In 2014, when the family was invited for a wedding in Jabalpur, we grabbed at the opportunity to stop at Bandhavgarh for a day. Took a train to Katni and then drove for about 2 hours to get to Bandhavgarh.
By the time we reached, it was late for the afternoon safari, so we took some time settling in and familiarizing ourselves with the property.
We turned in early as we had a very early morning safari. The slight chill at dawn combined with the hot chai and coffee served for the safari goers was a great start to the day.
And the sumptuous breakfast served after the safari was also very welcome. Even though we didn’t get to see the tiger, the safari ride itself was a lot of fun.
In the afternoon we left for Jabalpur, a lovely road trip and the most memorable for me were the blazing spring colors of the trees.
You can follow Sakshi on Instagram .
Places to stay for the safari

Bhandavgarh Tiger Lodge – This travel-sustainable property is located close to the maingate of the Bhandavgarh National Park from where you can book your safari.
5. Gir Forest Safari
The Sasan Gir Wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat is the only place in India where you can spot the rare Asiatic lions in the wild. The rough scrublands and dry forests enable tourists with an excellent opportunity to photograph the majestic animal in its natural habitat.
Ruma, blogger at The Holiday Story shares some tips.
Gir forest , also known as Sasan Gir, encompasses an area of 1.412 Km². At present, around 600 lions inhabit this forest land in Gujarat. Exploring this jungle through a safari is an exhilarating experience.
Early morning is the best time to go for a safari. Reporting time for the morning slot is 5:30 am. The IDs need to get verified first before boarding your choice of a safari vehicle. The gipsy or jeep will then take you through the Gir Jungle Trail .
There are several routes on this trail. The safari explores these trails in search of a glimpse of the mighty lions. Other than lions, you can also see deer, monkeys, langurs, and many species of birds. On visiting the Kamleshwar dam, you can also see crocodiles and birds like pelicans.
Apart from safari, you can visit the Kankai Mata temple or Jamjir waterfall. Both of these attractions are within the forest vicinity. You can also shop from the souvenir shop located in this national park. Drop by the Durbar Hall Museum to learn a bit about the history of Gujarat.
You can book a Gir Safari here .

6. Jim Corbett National Park
Ipsita from Nomad Enroute shares her tips
Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve, the first tiger reserve in India, is spread across a vast land of 520 square kilometers in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand.
It came into being in 1936 while in 1973 the Project Tiger was first launched under which tiger and other endangered species were to be preserved in their natural habitat.
The rare species such as otters and the endemic fish-eating crocodile, along with a significant number of tigers have found their home in the dense forest of Jim Corbett .
On the road we spotted a sambar running towards the jungle . Several deer were gliding along the riverbed, among which we could recognize a swamp deer (barasingha), which is now extinct in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The booking is handled by the forest department following the strict guideline set by the department.
You can book the safari online, with the requisite documentation supporting your request. Full name, address, age, sex and ID card number. The time-slots for the safari are 6 am to 9:30 am and 3 pm to 6 pm.
For Indians, it costs Rs. 4500 to hire a jeep, which includes 6 adults and 2 children between the age group 5-12. For foreigners, it costs Rs. 9000 for 6 adults and 2 children. Remember that charges must be made in advance and in case your plan gets cancelled, you won’t be refunded.

7. Kaziranga Jungle Safari
Welcome Vidyut from Triplyzer who shares his experience in the Kaziranga Safari
Kaziranga National Park is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. There are numerous tiger safaris in India, but safari here has something unique to offer – the one-horned rhino, a rare beast!
I visited Kaziranga as part of my northeast India itinerary, stayed overnight in the nearby town, and took the safari in the morning. For safari, you can either take a jeep or ride an elephant. I preferred the jeep for ethical reasons, but honestly, an elephant ride does sound fun.
Safaris start as early as 5.30 am in summer and it’s best to do it when it is still cool. The jeep safaris take about 2 hours, keep your DSLR with zoom lens ready as you will come across an abundance of wildlife.
There are four different safaris taking you to different zones in the park. If you start early, you can easily visit two of these. Central Range (Kohora) and the Western range (Bagori) are the two most popular, the former is known for the beautiful grassy landscape while the latter boasts of easy Rhino sightings.
The state government-run dedicated buses from the bus station at Paltan bazaar to Kaziranga, making it cheap and easy to get here. Since the journey is over 5 hours long, stay in Kohora as it has plenty of budget and premium options.
So here ends my post on the best jungle safaris in India – selected by travel bloggers. This was based on diversity of experiences and the endangered species that the forests preserve. I hope this will help you select your next holiday destination. Please share it and subscribe to the blog if you like the content.
So, are you thrilled to explore the wild Indian Jungles? I sure am. If you liked the post, save it so that you can plan your next jungle safari in India. Interesting read. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! A jungle safari in India sounds amazing! Thanks for the inspiration!
Ahhh! We were supposed to go in 2020 but it got cancelled. I would love to see these amazing animals in the wild! Thank you for inspiring me and let me travel through your pictures!
This sounds like such a cool experience! I didn’t realize safaris were a thing in India, but now I want to go on one.
Thanks a lot Maggie. India has some of the most thrilling and beautiful forest experiences.
