The band — led by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites — is set to open their tour in Maine in mid-August before stopping at several amphitheaters and music festivals, including Aspen’s Jazz Aspen Snowmass festival. Accompanied by James Bay as an opener, they’ll conclude their tour at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 15.

The tour extension is in support of their 2022 album Brightside , led by singles “Where We Are,” “ A.M. Radio ,” and “Big Shot.”

Last year, they hit the road for 62 stops around the world. It was their first tour after the cancelation of shows from their III: The World Tour, due to Covid. The group made its way around Europe before hitting the road in the U.S. with CAAMP, Ashe, and Bay as openers.

'Fiasco': Willy Wonka experience in Scotland creates sour taste for ticket buyers

When willy wonka fans bought tickets to the willy's chocolate experience in scotland, they expected to get to eat their way through a re-creation of the chocolate factory. the reality fell far short..

the lumineers scotland tour

A Willy Wonka-themed event in Scotland marketed as a place "where dreams come to life" turned sour last weekend, with police arriving and attendees wanting refunds.

At least those who ventured to Willy's Chocolate Experience in the Scottish city of Glasgow on Saturday are apparently getting their money back.

A U.K. event company called House of Illuminati promised attendees chocolate fountains, performances by Oompa Loompas and "a celebration of chocolate in all its delightful forms," the company promised on its website about the event based on Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Instead, when the venue opened on Saturday, Feb. 24, ticket-buyers found a sparsely decorated warehouse with a pair of women with green wigs – apparently the Oompa Loompas – and an actor portraying Willy Wonka, who looked more like an Oompa Loompa than Wonka.

Spring break: US issues Mexico 'increased caution' warning for travelers

Willy Wonka actor calls Glasgow, Scotland event a 'fiasco'

"I feel for anyone who bought tickets to this event, people who were expecting a magical chocolate experience and got me in a top hat in a dirty warehouse in Glasgow," said Paul Connell, an actor and comic who posted videos about the experience on TikTok and spoke to BBC Radio about the "fiasco," as he called it.

Connell said he and the other actors "were furious."

"We’d been conned, as well, and it did turn quite scary at one point because people were angry," he said.

Still, the actors tried to do as best they could for children in attendance, he told the BBC.

But, "there was lots of shouting and groups of people getting very, very irate," he said.

Children were crying with disappointment, Eva Stewart, 19, of East Kilbride, Scotland told the BBC . Instead of "this big massive Willy Wonka experience with optical illusions and big chocolate fountains and sweets … it was practically an abandoned, empty warehouse, with hardly anything in it," she said.

Father: Wonka experience 'an absolute con'

It took two minutes to see all the sights and then Stuart Sinclair came across "a queue of people surrounding the guy running it complaining," he said in a Facebook post with pictures showing the venue.

Calling the event "an absolute con," he added: "The kids received two jelly babies and a quarter of a can of bars limeade."Sinclair told The New York Times that he drove two hours and paid about $44 per ticket to bring his three children. “There was maybe 20 chairs, a couple of tables and a half-inflated bouncy castle,” he told the Times.

Police responded to the Box Hub Warehouse mid-day Saturday to find angry attendees wanting refunds, the BBC reported . It was not clear who called the police, the Times reported. The event was shut down and the organizers refunded tickets and apologized for the “very stressful and frustrating day,” The Guardian reported .

Company responds to 'fiasco'

The company organizing the event, the House of Illuminati, released a statement.

"Unfortunately, last minute we were let down in many areas of our event and tried our best to continue on and push through and now realize we probably should have cancelled first thing this morning instead," the company statement said.

A Facebook group continues to discuss refunds and how promotional imagery was likely generated by artificial intelligence.

"The event organizers apparently used artificial intelligence to generate promotional images that suggested a very high-quality attraction, which looked just like the immersive and trippy Wonka-esque world that the ad copy promised," The Hollywood Reporter reported . "Ticket buyers needed pure imagination to think it looked anything like a fantastical chocolate factory."

Connell said he thought his Wonka script was "AI-generated gibberish."

House of Illuminati promises refunds for its Willy Wonka-themed event

"I am truly sorry for any upset and disappointment caused at the weekend. Refunds have been issued and will continue to do so," the House of Illuminati company said on its Facebook page . "This was an event gone wrong, the house of illuminati will NOT be holding any event in the foreseeable future."

So much for the most wonderful place in the whole world.

A Willy Wonka-inspired experience ‘scam’ was so bad that people called the cops

People who attended a Willy Wonka-inspired “Chocolate Experience” in Glasgow, Scotland, were promised “extraordinary props, oversized lollipops, and a paradise of sweet treats” — all promoted with dreamlike, candy-colored images on its website .

When ticketholders arrived at the event over the weekend, they instead found a sparsely decorated warehouse with nothing resembling the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” franchise the event invoked in its advertising.

“It was just ridiculous. I mean, just very amateurish. Absolutely nothing like what was described,” said Alana Lockens, who paid £35 per ticket, or $44.40 , to take her two young kids to the experience. “For the sake of my children, we were trying to be happy and smiley so that they wouldn’t pick up on the disappointment and just tried to make the best of a bad situation.”

House of Illuminati's "Willy's Chocolate Experience" event

Outraged attendees immediately began posting their experiences online, calling the event underwhelming and a “scam.” Some people quickly likened the event to the infamous Fyre Festival , a chaotic and pricey island concert that was falsely advertised as a “once-in-a-lifetime musical experience.”

By Saturday afternoon, the experience had been canceled and local police confirmed to NBC News that they were called to the scene after attendees who felt conned began demanding refunds. And further examination, along with interviews of people hired to work the event, hints that artificial intelligence-generated media may have played a key role in creating its veneer.

The event website touted interactive exhibits, and images shared on the site couldn’t be found elsewhere on the internet through reverse image searches. Some bore known hallmarks of AI creation, most notably strange and nonsensical lettering.

Two actors hired for the event who spoke to NBC News said they were promised £500 to perform in themed costumes that weekend. They each said the script they were given appeared AI-generated because of its “gibberish” wording. And when they showed up for rehearsal Friday night, more alarm bells went off.

Michael Archibald said he heard back the same day he applied to the acting gig, which was listed on the jobs site Indeed. When he showed up to rehearse the day before the event, the warehouse still looked barebones beyond a few props, and he said costumes weren’t delivered until rehearsal was nearly over.

Things didn’t look much better when he arrived the next morning.

“I thought, this is where dreams go to die,” he said of his reaction upon walking into the warehouse Saturday. “I already could feel the embarrassment. … I knew the script was AI-generated, as well. I was like, this isn’t normal human writing.”

House of Illuminati's "Willy's Chocolate Experience" event

The event was hosted by the London-based event company House of Illuminati, which was incorporated just three months ago, according to the U.K. government agency Companies House. It describes itself as “a realm where fantasy and reality converge to create unparalleled immersive experiences.” The company didn’t respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

In the hours after the event’s abrupt cancellation, House of Illuminati posted a now-deleted statement on its Facebook page promising to return attendees’ money.

“Today has been a very stressful and frustrating day for many and for that we are truly sorry. Unfortunately last minute we were let down in many areas of our event and tried our best to continue on and push through and now realise we probably should havd cancelled first thing this morning instead,” the post said. “we fully apologise for what has happened and will be giving full refunds to each and every person that purchased tickets.”

It isn’t entirely clear whether the company used AI to generate its promotional images and character scripts, and the company hasn’t addressed the topic.

Ever since the ongoing explosion in generative AI technology made it easy for internet users to instantaneously create web copy and images from text prompts, many sellers and services have begun using AI-generated content in their marketing . Deepfakes of celebrities and influencers advertising certain products have also circulated in recent months, tricking some potential buyers.

Paul Connell, another actor hired for the event, said some scenes in the script were “absolute nonsense” and impossible to replicate without special effects. The actors said event organizers soon told them to scrap the scripts and just improvise as the characters they were supposed to play.

At one point, Connell said, the actors began to suspect that the event was a sham and that they were unlikely to receive payment for their work. But after they discussed the situation among themselves, he said, they decided to stay and try to entertain the children as best as they could.

Paul Connell in his Willy Wonka costume

“I just thought of it as I just want the kids to have a good time. So I’m going to be silly and take photographs with them and play little games with them,” Connell said. “There was a little girl dressed as an Oompa Loompa that was just really upset, because she’d expected Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and got a dirty warehouse in Glasgow.”

Connell said the situation began to deteriorate soon after the event began. He said he took a lunch break as his “sanity was starting to go” — and returned to see chaos unfolding.

“There was just a mob of people outside and inside. It was carnage,” Connell said. “I joked when I walked back in, ‘I’ve been at lunch an hour, what’s happened?’ And there was people just running everywhere, shouting, threatening the organizers.”

By then, the Police Service of Scotland had been called to the scene. A spokesperson said in an email that it wasn’t a police matter but that officers offered advice to frustrated attendees.

Lockens said she has received an email confirming her refund but hasn’t yet received the money in her account, which House of Illuminati’s post said can take up to 10 working days.

The company’s director, Billy Coull, appears to have wiped most of his online presence since he drew backlash for the event. Coull didn’t respond to requests for comment through his Instagram page.

Disgruntled attendees have also created a Facebook group called “ house of Illuminati scam ” to share their experiences at Willy’s Chocolate Experience and organize efforts to secure refunds.

Box Hub, the event venue that rented out its space to House of Illuminati, said in an email that it has been in contact with several parents about offering its venue as a space to host another event for the families who were dismayed by last weekend’s.

“We would love to offer our venue completely free of charge as a gesture of apology on behalf of House of Illuminati, who either have no regards for the families and young children they have disappointed or are too embarrassed to comment,” operations manager Matt Waterfield wrote.

He reiterated that Box Hub had no involvement with House of Illuminati’s event beyond renting out the Glasgow venue and said the company was “shocked to see the way this event had unravelled after being led to believe this event would be a ‘fully immersive showcase.’”

For Lockens, purchasing five tickets for her family made a sizable dent in her wallet. But she said she thought the experience would be worth it for her children, who are major fans of all things Willy Wonka. (The event’s website said it had no official affiliation with Warner Bros., which owns the rights to the Willy Wonka character.)

“It’s just not what I expected at all, and it certainly was not worth £35 per ticket,” she said. “In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis in the U.K., that’s money that most families won’t be able to afford to part with for something that was just so terrible.”

Indiana candy and chocolate factories you don't need a golden ticket to tour

the lumineers scotland tour

If Oompa Loompas were real, they would've sung a song about how terrible " Willy's Chocolate Experience " was in Glasgow, Scotland, last week.

What do you get when you pay $44 a ticket to see "a celebration of chocolate in all its delightful forms?" Apparently a sparsely decorated warehouse with a half-inflated bouncy castle, jaded actors who clearly look miserable , as well as a nightmare-fueled villain who reduced some children to tears.

Even worse, there was no chocolate .

Kids received two jelly beans and a cup of limeade. Organizers have since apologized after furious parents called police , demanding refunds, the BBC reported.

'Fiasco': Willy Wonka experience in Scotland creates sour taste for ticket buyers

If those same U.K. parents ever travel to the United States, they ought to visit Indiana. The Hoosier state is fortunate to have several chocolate and candy factories that won't leave you feeling sour by the end of your trip.

Here are some of the sweetest tours even Willy Wonka would be proud of.

Abbott’s Candies - Hagerstown

Abbott's has been making caramel since before automobiles were invented. The company bills itself as the oldest candy shop in Indiana having been established in 1890. You can visit this Hagerstown confectionary for its handmade caramels and toffees as well as peanut and cashew brittle. And while there's no river of chocolate to sail on, Abbott's has a lot of fudge to enjoy.

Free, handicap accessible tours are available at Abbott's for small to large groups from 10-10:30 a.m. or 1-1:30 p.m., according to the company, which asks visitors to book the tours ahead of time in order to reserve a spot. You can request a tour online at abbottscandy.com/tours/ to watch as the candy is made.

Where it is : 48 E Walnut St, Hagerstown, IN 47346

Schimpff’s Confectionery - Jeffersonville

Opened in 1891, Schimpff's Confectionery in Jeffersonville near Louisville is one of the oldest family-owned candy businesses in the country. Visitors can enjoy the 50s-style soda fountain, candy museum , enjoy locally made favorites such as Cinnamon Red Hots and watch as the candy is being made .

Free tours lasting roughly 40 minutes are available Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., according to the company, except on major holidays when the factory is closed.

Where it is : 347 Spring St, Jeffersonville, IN 47130

South Bend Chocolate Company - South Bend (of course)

Visitors who take the factory tour at the South Bend Chocolate Company are treated to a pretty sweet deal.

A guide leads guests through its more than 58,000 square-foot factory, teaching a history lesson of chocolate and its origins. The chocolate museum is home to one of the largest collections of chocolate memorabilia in the world, according to the company, including a 1,300-year-old Mayan chocolate pot.

For "Wonka-wannabes" who pay a small fee, you can go behind the scenes for a personal tour lasting roughly an hour. The cost is $5 ages 12 and up, $2 for children 2-11. Tours are at the top of every hour, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Mon–Fri and 9 a.m.–2 p.m. on Saturdays. Closed Sundays & major holidays.

Where it is : 3300 W Sample St South Bend, IN

DeBrand Fine Chocolates - Fort Wayne

DeBrand Fine Chocolates founder, Cathy Brand-Beere, began her confectionery career at age 8 , making and selling candy in elementary school. Her passion for chocolate never soured, according to her company website. Today, her company employs roughly 100 people and has retail shops in Fort Wayne and in Indianapolis.

Visitors to Fort Wayne can take a tour of the factory, viewing the chocolate making kitchens and walk away with gourmet chocolate samples. Public tours happen Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Thursdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., according to the company. The cost is $10 per person, with each person receiving a rebate of $10 off a $20 or more purchase. No reservation is required. Private tours are available as well.

Where it is : 10105 Auburn Park Dr, Fort Wayne, IN 46825 .

Syme, Brown share lead at SDC Championship on the European tour. They are 2 shots clear of chasers

EASTERN CAPE, South Africa — Connor Syme of Scotland and Daniel Brown of England share the lead and are two shots clear of the chasers heading into the final round of the SDC Championship on the European tour.

Brown, who led after 36 holes in South Africa, shot an even-par 72 and was joined at the top of the leaderboard on 11 under overall by Syme, who had seven birdies in a 67 — the third lowest score of the third round on Saturday.

The 141st-ranked Syme has never won a European tour event — he has three second-place finishes, however — while Brown’s sole victory was at the ISPS Handa World Invitational last year.

Three players are tied for third place: Andy Sullivan of England (66), Robin Williams of South Africa (71) and James Nicholas of the United States (70). Nicholas is ranked No. 1,129.
