This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.

Fast-paced and hitting many of the highlights of South America in a manageable timeframe. Highly recommended. Hotels were decent and individual (no bland chains here!) and the guide was extremely knowledgeable and personalised the tour throughout to things that those in the group were interested in specifically. It was a small group (6) and a perfect match between group activity and then free time to explore places in the way you wanted to. A memorable experience and the landscapes in NW Argentina, Chile and Bolivia are unsurpassed globally in my opinion!

Reviews of luxury tours in latin america.

I absolutely loved the tour on all dimensions. Our tour guide Jairo was amazing and just made Colombia feel like home. He was very agile in responding to new dynamics despite the COVID-19 situation and made sure that we all had an impeccable experience. Colombia is also a beautiful country that is full of gems to see and experience, beautiful people and a cheerful spirit that overwhelms you wherever you go. The country's attention to hygiene is exemplary and made me feel safe traveling during COVID-19 times. It has been a great experience overall and I will highly recommend this tour to my friends.
Excellent. Thanks ☺️

Luxury South America Tours & Travel Guide

Luxury South America Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Luxury in south america.

Luxury in South America , four words you thought didn’t go together? Think again!

South America is rich with culture, food, architecture, and some of the most awe-inspiring vistas you could imagine. South America is also an amazing place to go on a luxury vacation.

South American luxury tours don’t only encompass staying in 5-star hotels or on comfortable cruises, but also extend to those experiences that only booking a luxury tour can offer. Want to have a private meal with a local chef, stay only footsteps from the top natural wonders of South America, or kayak a remote lagoon, luxury vacations of South America can offer those.

Luxury tours are also about travelers getting the opportunity to create their own itinerary. Most tour operators help you handcraft your own trip if a preset itinerary doesn’t fit your travel style. They work with you to create a path that takes you to the greatest ruins and best restaurants others won’t.

Top Sights in South America for Luxury Travelers

1. Machu Picchu

The most recognizable sight in all of South America, Machu Picchu is an architectural and engineering marvel of the Incan people. This City in the Clouds was once an Incan citadel in the mountains of Peru .

To really see Machu Picchu in its full glory and getting a celebrity experience, check out the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge that offers views of Huayna Picchu Mountain from your room and top notching dining.

2. Patagonia

The southernmost point of South America is dominated by the vast, remarkable, and sparsely populated region of Patagonia. This area is made up of mountains, grasslands, coastline, pampas, and breathtaking views.

Patagonia is also where most cruises to Antarctica depart from. Luxury tours of Patagonia are all about combining numerous outdoor activities with personalized itineraries and staying in luxury hotels that still connect you to nature, such as seaside villas.

3. Galapagos Islands

The islands that influenced Darwin’s theory of natural selection. These islands off of the coast of Ecuador were historically important during Spanish and Portuguese colonization. They are even more important for their diverse wildlife and ecosystem. Luxury cruises of the Galapagos Islands typically feature smaller vessels, multiple day excursions, and onboard activities.

4. Iguazu Falls

Imagine staying at a hotel that offers a view of the Iguazu Falls outside of your balcony window, that’s what you can experience on a luxury South America tour. On the border of Argentina and Brazil lie the Iguazu Falls.

The Iguazu Falls consist of 275 waterfalls stretching over 1.7 miles and depositing some 1,500 cubic meters of water per second. The falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are larger than both Niagara Falls and Victoria Falls.

5. Uyuni’s Salt Flats

Considered the world’s largest mirror, the Salt Flats outside of Uyuni in Bolivia are truly a natural wonder. The flats were created when prehistoric lakes evaporated leaving the large salt bed. During certain times of the year, water flows over the flats creating a reflection of the sky above.

Visitors looking for a relaxing and comfortable vacation can stay in one of the local 5-star hotels where you can meet local cultural guides who will take you through this unique landscape.

6. Easter Island

Explore one of the most remote islands in the world by spending your vacation hiking and discovering the mysterious Moai statues. Easter Island is an island of mystery and stunning views. Luxury tours of the island offer stays at eco lodges on the island, individualized culture tours of the famous sites, and special experiences.

7. Santuario de las Lajas

Santuario de las Lajas, or Las Lajas Sanctuary, is a basilica in Southern Colombia that is known for its stunning architecture and legends. With tales of visions and miraculous events happening at the church, Las Lajas Sanctuary is a special place that is often included on luxury tours of Colombia or day trips from Ipiales with the opportunity to have personalized tours of the murals.

8. Lake Titicaca, Peru

Lake Titicaca has been called the “Birthplace of the Sun.” Located on the border of Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the largest lake on the continent.

You can hike along the lakeside, charter a yacht to sail you around the lake, or stay in one of the brightly colored blue or yellow hotels that hug the cliffside. If you’re lucky during your stay, you may be able to encounter one of the local festivals or celebrations that take part in the area.

9. Cartagena, Colombia

Check out this colorful and historic history in style by staying in one of the historic hotels in the center of the city or getting a private tour of the famous Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. Caratagena’s long history provides you with the chance to learn about the city’s colonial past and local customs through restored mansions and the Mercado de Bazurto.

10. Buenos Aires, Argentina

The perfect city to see on a customized-tour of South America, Buenas Aires has something to offer everyone. Experience the city like no one else can when you take a personal tango lesson, spend an afternoon relaxing at the historic Faena spa, or a private wine tasting when you can try all of Argentina’s delectable wines. The city’s glitz and glamour from the 1920s and 30s are there offering those opportunities you won’t forget.

South American Cuisine

Like many things in South America, the cuisine is determined by the country and geography of where you are visiting. A common thread throughout all of the countries is a connection to the ingredients and traditions of the local people.

Peru’s cuisine isn’t only influenced by European and Asian immigrants, but also by the staples of Incan people - roots, maize, and beans. In Brazil, you’ll find Portuguese-inspired dishes along with fish stew served in clay pots.

Food in South America is a blend of multiple generations and cultures. As the country saw colonization by the Spanish, Portuguese, and later European immigrants, many countries have incorporated the traditions of these regions into their cuisine. Fusion is a common type of cuisine, especially in Peru , where the dishes are a delicious melding of traditions, techniques, and ingredients of the people of South America.

Common dishes you’ll see in South America feature fish, corn, squash, and tubers. However, you’ll also see chilies, adobe, plantains, coriander, cassava, and large amounts of meat. Many of the countries include these ingredients in their own distinct way and techniques. For those with dietary restrictions, many of the major cities have seen a growth in vegetarian and vegan options.

Classic Regions in South America for Luxury Travel

One of the top countries to visit in South America, Chile is considered an old hat at luxury tours. Chile may be thin in some areas but is full of historic sites, ancient ruins, and a rugged landscape. Chile is known for its opportunities to experience local traditions, handcrafts, and unique destinations.

Often considered the top destination in South America, Peru has been welcoming luxury travelers for years. With historic cities of Lima and Cuzco, Incan sites, and a food fusion culture, Peru has been leading the way for luxury vacations on the continent.

3. Galapagos Islands

Since Darwin published his work, the Galapagos Islands have been inspiring travelers to learn more about the natural world and see the biodiversity that call these islands home. Cruises of the Galapagos start off in Ecuador and allow you to see the teeming natural life that makes this area of South America unforgettable.

4. Argentina

Tango, Patagonia, and Buenas Aires. A trifecta of Argentina that luxury travelers have been loving for years. Argentina has the perfect combination of unbelievable landscapes of Tierra del Fuego, colorful cities of Buenos Aires, and a rich music and food scene.

Up and Coming Regions in South America for Luxury Travelers

As travelers, we are always looking for the next hidden gem. In South America, there are some areas that are growing in popularity in the luxury travel realm for their history, remoteness, and attention to ecotourism.

1. Colombia

Once considered a country few would travel to, Colombia has been growing in popularity in the last few years. With the vibrant and historic cities of Cartagena, Bogota, and Medellin and the salsa capital of Cali, Colombia is offering an experience to get to know what Colombia is really all about.

2. Uruguay

Largely forgotten about by most because of its neighbors Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is still considered a hidden gem in South America. However, this won’t be the case much longer. Uruguay has all of the characteristics of Buenos Aires, but with smaller crowds, art galleries, and gastronomy to make your stomach growl.

3. Bolivia

Home to the Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia has become the luxury destination to see what Earth looked like before humankind. In Bolivia, you can get an up close and personal with the world around you by kayaking on the Amazon , catching pink dolphins swimming in the water, and discovering the beautiful Lake Titicaca.

4. Brazil

There are destinations in Brazil that are combining the adventurous sides of luxury travel along with the growing awareness of ecotourism. You can find multiple eco resorts in Brazil that focus on combining these two aspects of travel. As the genre of ecotourism grows and companies choosing to travel smartly, Brazil is one of the countries helping to grow this awareness.

Private Guided Tour in South America

Many luxury tour operators offer privately guided or custom itineraries of South America. One of the benefits of going with a luxury tour company is being able to handpick and construct your own vacation. These tours offer the opportunity to add in more adventurous experiences or focus on the food of a destination. You aren’t as restricted as if you were going on a preselected tour. Luxury tours can be for solo travelers, couples, and even families.

Also, these tours can be privately guided. You are paired with a local guide that takes you to all of the top sites and experiences without the stress of large tour groups or changing guides in every city. Luxury tours tend to be more intimate than larger group travel. This is a great option to see South America if you are going on a honeymoon or looking for a family vacation.

Accommodation in The Sacred Valley

luxury tours south america

This is without doubt one of the most comfortable and luxurious places to stay in the Sacred Valley. Set in a beautiful spot by the Urubamba river the hotel is close to the Incan fortress of Ollantaytambo. The construction and design of the 22 rooms is in keeping with the rustic surrounds of this historic location with extensive use of natural materials, yet never compromising on luxury.

The hotel has a good restaurant and a high quality 230 square metre spa in which to relax after a day exploring the area. There are also two very spacious and well-appointed villas suitable for families or groups of friends travelling together.

  • Relais & Chateaux Restaurant
  • Adjoining ranch and stables
  • Birdwatching
  • Cooking classes
  • Andean weaving
  • Pottery workshops
  • Mountain bike tours and trekking
  • Visits to sites around the Sacred Valley

Set among beautiful gardens in the magnificent location of the  Sacred Valley , Sol y Luna is a charming and comfortable hotel with wonderfully relaxing amenities. Your bungalow, or ‘casita’, is designed with Andean touches and stylish interiors and boasts gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape. Spend your days exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas where you can partake in exciting activities such as horse riding, bird watching and para-gliding.

Back at Sol y Luna the indulgent spa, sauna and pool is a peaceful place for you to unwind, while the dining consists of a number of Relais & Chateaux member restaurants: Killa Wasi, where Peruvian and European cuisine is served and Wayra, a separate restaurant set in the hotel’s Wayra ranch where Andean cuisine pays homage to the wealth of natural ingredients cultivated in the Sacred Valley since the time of the Incas. There is also a bar, Chicha Wasi, where you can enjoy authentic pisco sours.

The hotel is also recognised for its community initiatives, particularly in education. After 10 years of working with different schools and programs, Sol y Luna opened the Sol y Luna Intercultural School, providing educational services to a number of local students. The hotel recently started another initiative, Sol y Luna Home, which provides a safe home for children without a family or who are victims of violence.

Visit to the Patacancha Community

Enjoy a visit to the Patacancha community, immersing yourself in interactions with locals and gaining insights into their way of life. Countless villages in the valley have upheld the customs and heritage of their predecessors, tracing their lineage back to the time of the Incas. These traditions encompass everything from agricultural methods, dietary habits, and weaving traditions to language and traditional attire. To conclude this enriching experience, a delicious lunch awaits you at a local restaurant.

luxury tours south america

Visit the Inca fortress town of Ollantaytambo. The site was built just as the Spaniards arrived and is one of the most important if not visible vestiges of how the Incas inhabited and functioned in their cities making it a fascinating place to explore. There is a fortress at the top of the hill (and quite a few steps) which is particularly interesting to investigate for the techniques the Incas used in its construction.

Private transfer from the Sacred Valley to Ollanta station

luxury tours south america

You cannot traverse the Peruvian landscape to Machu Picchu in more style, luxury, and romantic charm than by the Hiram Bingham train. Aboard, the 1920s Pullman carriages reflect the opulence of the locomotive era bedecked in polished brass, wood panels and rich, comfy seating. There is also a period observation car at the rear. Brunch on the journey is included and taken in the very elegant dining car replete with white-linen tablecloths, clinking crystal, and you are looked after by a smart team of waiters. Whilst feasting on fine Peruvian cuisine the steamy forest scenery unfolds right in front of you. There is also an open viewing carriage for admiring the views.

machu-picchu

Your private guide will take you on a comprehensive tour of the Machu Picchu citadel, really bringing it to life by detailing the history, significance and myths surrounding it as well as taking you to the hidden corners and best viewpoints. Then after your guided tour, you'll descend to Aguas Calientes for a delicious lunch at the rustically elegant Inkaterra hotel, before an afternoon at your leisure: you can explore the areas around Machu Picchu or carry on exploring the ruins. Return in the evening to overnight at your chosen hotel in the Machu Picchu area.

  • Two restaurants & afternoon tea
  • Privately guided tours of Machu Picchu

The gorgeous garden is a wonderful place to have breakfast or a cocktail in the evening while relishing in the peace of the surroundings.

Given the location, space is at an economy so the standard rooms are not overly spacious. However, this is a small price to pay for such a stunning location. All meals are included in the cost.

  • Nature walks

The impact of your stay:

  • Recognised as the world’s first Climate Positive hotel brand by Green Initiative, endorsed by the United Nations, Inkaterra collaborated with AJE Group, Machu Picchu Town Hall, and the National Park Service to make Machu Picchu the first carbon-neutral international destination. This commitment aims to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, aligning with the United Nations Paris Agreement goals.
  • Funded by tourism, the hotel actively restores a 4-hectare area damaged by livestock, nurturing native flora and encouraging the return of fauna. Additionally, they’ve identified 372 orchid species, discovering 26 new orchid species previously unknown to science.

Palacio Nazarenas, a beautifully-restored old palace and convent, is Belmond’s latest hotel in Cusco and another triumph on the same par as the nearby Monasterio.

The hotel has been conscientiously renovated so that guest bask not only in modern luxury but in the history of Cusco, with cloistered gardens, fountains, walls of Incan stones, lovely terraces and flowered patios to wander amongst.

The style is sympathetic to the colonial era in regards to its lavishness but also outfitted to modern demands and designs. For example, all of its rooms are oxygen-enriched to help ease the altitude for visitors, and it boasts the city’s first outdoor pool.

luxury tours south america

Cusco’s most famous and prestigious hotel, Monasterio is a beautifully restored monastery in the heart of town just steps away from the main plaza, finest restaurants and best museums. Built around Incan foundations, adorned with antique Spanish design, the hotel is an important historical landmark and is protected by the National Institute of Culture.

The 126 unique rooms offer a great mix of elegance and comfort, ranging from cozy quarters to expansive suite. The hotel also goes the extra mile in terms of guests’ comfort with the provision of some oxygen enriched bedrooms to help acclimatize to the high altitude.

There are two restaurants – Illariy in the cloisters opening out over the leafy courtyard where you’ll find delicious breakfasts and light lunches, and El Tupay which serves fine international cuisine created from local ingredients, often accompanied by opera. The relaxed lobby bar is the place to sip pisco sours after a day exploring.

This luxury boutique hotel is located right in the center of Cusco surrounded by cobblestone streets, museums and next door to Plaza Las Nazarenas. This really is the premier property in Cusco and a real delight to stay at.

La Casona is a beauitfully and carefully restored colonial manor house from the 16th century with modern luxuries. With only eleven suites surrounding a courtyard, the atmosphere is very private and charming.

Each room is furnished with period antiques and has a fireplace and heated floors. Other hotel amenities include a library, restaurant, lounge, spa, butler services and Peruvian cooking classes.

Your local expert guide will collect you from your hotel for a tour of the city, starting out at the Santo Domingo convent monastery. This former Colonial monastery was previously the Koricancha Temple, one of the most important temples devoted to the worship of the sun. According to the chronicles, it was covered in gold leaf and filled with golden representations of nature. Your next stop will be the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. After touring the most interesting sites of the city, you will be driven by private vehicle to the countryside just outside Cusco to visit some of the remarkable Inca ruins in the area such as the cult centre of Sacsayhuaman, the temple and amphitheatre of Kenko, and the Red Fortress of Puca Pucara. Accommodation in Buenos Aires

luxury tours south america

Located in the heart of the French heritage district of Recoleta in a restored belle epoque mansion, the Park Hyatt is a luxury hotel that offers the perfect base from which to explore this vibrant city.

There are 165 elegant rooms and suites, featuring all the modern luxuries that one would expect from a hotel of this ilk as well as period flourishes and detail in keeping with the history of the building. Buenos Aires is a city known for its gastronomy and the offerings at the hotel do not disappoint. Enjoy Argentinian cuisine at Duhau Restaurante and Vinoteca – where there are 7,000 bottles of Argentinian wine to choose from, or Italian at Gioia Restaurante and Terrazas. Satisfy your sweet tooth with afternoon tea at Los Salones del Piano Nobile, then end the day at The Oak Bar with its wood burning fireplace and garden views.

When you’re not out exploring the city, unwind at the Ahin Spa. Ahin in local dialect signifies a welcoming ceremony for an honoured visitor and guests visiting the spa are sure to appreciate the warm welcome. There is also a fitness centre and heated indoor swimming pool as well as a lovely garden in which to relax.

faena-pool-buenos-aires-argentina

The Faena Buenos Aires is a striking design hotel in the waterside neighborhood of Puerto Madero, the brainchild of local empresario Alan Faena and designer Philippe Starck.

The hotel is located in the restored El Porteño building, an enormous silo built in 1902 that produced grain for post-war Europe. The decor encapsulates the grandeur of the belle epoque that characterised Buenos Aires at the turn of last centrury. A red, black and white colour scheme runs through the hotel teamed with exposed brick walls and concrete pillars that hark back to its industrious past.

Rooms and suites are filled with eye catching touches such as hand embroidered throws and filifree mirrors and feature huge windows which look out over Ecological Reserve, the parks, Río de la Plata and the quaysides of Puerto Madero.

Eating and drinking at the Faena is a real treat. Enjoy fine dining at Bistro Sur where the menu is inspired by the finest seasonal Argentinian produce, or opt for something more casual at El Mercado which is inspired by the country’s famous cantinas and the open air markets of Europe. The Library Lounge is an intimate space filled with antique books and crysal chandeliers, while El Cabaret, inspired by the city’s 1920s tango clubs, is where you can catch the award-winning show, Rojo Tango.

The hotel also features a spa, fitness centre and an outdoor pool.

luxury tours south america

Perhaps the best luxury hotel in Buenos Aires, the Four Seasons is really very suited to the luxury traveller. With beautifully decorated and well equipped rooms and communal areas, the sense of quality and refinement is pervasive throughout the hotel. They also have by far the best pool area in the city which has a strict guests only policy.

Service, as you might expect, is absolutely first class making this the hotel of choice in Buenos Aires for many visiting dignitaries and celebrities.

alvear-palace-hotel-facade

The Alvear Palace Hotel opened its doors in 1932 and has remained one of the city’s most iconic hotels ever since. Located in the exclusive Recoleta neighbourhood, everything about the Alvear is incredibly well thought through with lots of little touches that make it a really special place to stay.

The hotel’s 192 rooms and suites are impeccable designed with a mix of Empire, Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Sumptuous fabrics and elegant furnishing are complimented by decorative arts and paintings by Argentinian artists. The larger lounge suites offer butler service so you can make the most of your stay.

Enjoy sophisticated French cuisine at La Bourgogne, and a decadent afternoon tea in L’Orangerie before sampling an expertly mixed cocktail at the lobby bar, which has long been a meeting place for well-known members of Buenos Aires society. Enjoying a tipple at the rooftop bar is also not to be missed, with its spectacular views over Alvear Avenue.

When you’re not out exploring all that the Argentinean capital has to offer, relax and unwind in the spa, wellness area, fitness centre and rooftop pool with adjoining pool bar.

Set in the fashionable and leafy district of Palermo, Legado Mitico is a beautiful boutique hotel within easy reach of the city’s main attractions and restaurants.

Located in a refurbished three-storey townhouse, the hotel draws on the rich historical culture of Argentina. There are 11 rooms each inspired by a famous figure such as tango dancer Carlos Gardel, writer Jorge Luis Borges, and Evita. A warm colour scheme runs throughout the rooms and wooden floors and period antique pieces give them lots of traditional charm.

The cultural theme extends into the communal areas with a small library in the lounge where the more inquisitive guest can read all about the historic figures that inspire the decoration of the room. The library opens out onto a small patio where guests can relax with a drink.

luxury tours south america

Hub Porteño is a historic property set on a quiet street in the heart of Recoleta, and feels more like a home than a hotel. There are just 11 rooms, bright and spacious and filled with antique furniture and more recent pieces from local artisans.

The hotel’s rooftop terrace is a beautiful spot with outdoor seating nestled among the lush greenery – a real city centre oasis. Here you can relax with a drink from the bar and a bite to eat or simply sit back with the morning paper. La Pecora Nera Grill specialises in new Argentinian cuisine while the cosy living room is the place to enjoy drinks and snacks.

There is also a wellness centre with a sauna, gym and treatment room.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel and bring you (with private vehicle) on a fascinating half-day private tour of the elegant turn-of-the-century districts that earned Buenos Aires the soubriquet of the Paris of South America. Including a trip to La Boca district in the South and then up to the charming cobbled alleys and colonial architecture of San Telmo. Along to the Plaza de Mayo, up the leafy Avenida de Mayo towards the imposing grandeur of the Palace of Congress and then on to the historically fascinating Recoleta Cemetery, you will discover the facts, stories and anecdotes that make up the colourful tapestry of the history of Buenos Aires. Tours can be extended to include la Boca, Shopping, the Colon Opera house etc.

This is where the famous Caminito Street lies, scarcely 100 metres long, yet very much an emblematic post-card of the city. Designed by the Italian-Argentine artist Benito Quinquela Martín at a disused rail port terminal just beyond the iron cantilevered Puente de la Boca which bridges the river, it is a short yet busy pedestrian alley of brightly-painted houses which cluster above the cobblestones. The sheets of corrugated-iron shimmer with glossy blues, reds, yellows and greens and recall the original colours of the leftover paint with which the dockworkers painted their homes in the 19th century.

Day free to explore the city

Enjoy the best Tango Show in town, set in the exclusive environs of the Faena Hotel. The Rojo tango is the smallest and most stylish of tango salons. Your evening includes a three course dinner, wine, and transfers to and from the venue.

An iconic hotel for an iconic city, the Copacabana Palace is synonymous with Rio de Janeiro and is very much a destination in itself.

The rooms, facilities and service here are truly first class and you will feel very special lounging in the beautiful pool area, which is one of the most elegant in all the city.

The hotel is a short distance from the more fashionable districts (Copacabana no longer being the top of the pile) and you may find yourself making a short taxi ride to the best restaurants, bars and beaches.

Service at the Copacabana Palace is the best in the city.

The Fasano Rio is the most stylish hotel in Rio. Set on Ipanema beach front and designed by Phillipe Starck, this is a stunning property. The Fasano brings an air of understated cool and luxury that has been somewhat lacking in some of the other beach-front hotels in Rio.

The rooms are immaculately decorated with a combination of period pieces, original artwork and chic-modern style. We recommend the Deluxe sea view category or above. Each has a private balcony with views out to sea and king size beds with Egyptian cotton sheets and goose down pillows. For that extra touch of luxury and pampering, there is also butler service.

The facilities include an excellent bar, perhaps the city’s best seafood restaurant and a stunning rooftop infinity pool.

luxury tours south america

Set in the charming old colonial neighbourhood of Santa Teresa, this hotel offers a different approach to the Rio experience away from the high rise beach hotels. The location up on the hill offers a great viewpoint from which to admire the city and an oasis of calm in which to relax.

The hotel has full spa facilities, beautifully decorated rooms, and a great pool area. Formally a colonial farm house, the building has been carefully restored and converted with its history in mind and a light modern touch; using old woods and natural fabric but cut with clean modern lines. Rooms are also equipped with all modern comforts that you would expect in a contemporary luxury hotel.

You will be met at your hotel by your expert, English-speaking Carioca guide and a private vehicle will be waiting to start your city tour of Rio.

christ-the-redemeer-rio-de-janeiro

Christ the Redeemer statue is Rio’s most famous attraction with his arms stretched out, he looks to be blessing the entire city. At 710 metres above the centre on the Corcovado hill, the statue is surrounded by wide, open terraces from where you get unbeatable vistas of the city's impressive littoral, the southern neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema, the Lagoon, the Sugar Loaf and the town of Niterói.

luxury tours south america

The faded grandeur of this part of the city, often referred to as the Montmartre of Rio, set into the hills close to the centre of town, still retains a rich cultural atmosphere of art, music and history. Mansions line the narrow streets struggling with the encroaching vegetation and incline, and is still home to many painters cafes and artists studios. You can stop for a drink or lunch at one of the many charming restaurants, bistros and cafes that populate Santa Teresa’s lively streets. Your guide will also take you to the Ruins Park, a cultural centre in the remains of a 19th century house which has a Belvedere that commands some of the best views over Rio.

luxury tours south america

Your guide will escort you through the narrow 19th century streets at your required pace, stopping at the magnificent Baroque churches and the ruins of the old port from where most of Brazil’s gold left for its long journey to Europe. You will also see many other culturally interesting and historical attractions that illustrate the city’s rich and varied heritage.

luxury tours south america

This massive granite rock, 396 metres tall, is one of the city’s most emblematic landmarks, adorning many a postcard. You will take the cable car with your guide from the Guanabara Bay entrance in the Urca district. At the zenith the view of Rio and its neighbourhoods sprawled over bays, coves, and appearing from dense green hillsides is unrivalled and quite spectacular.

Walking Tours in South America

A seal in latin America.

Enjoy the amigos effect on our Latin America tours

Zip-liners zooming through the rainforest canopy. Snorkelers facedown over coral gardens and schools of manta rays. Canoers coming ashore in a primitive jungle village. Travelers on our Central America tours are the luckiest species of traveler. Costa Rica , Panama , Belize and Guatemala are eco-experiences to the Nth degree – teeming nature with an abundance of super-fun activities. You’ll stay in luxury lodges, go on turtle safaris, boogie board in the Pacific, count butterflies, walk on lava flows and climb Mayan ruins . (Did we mention the part about sipping a cocktail by the pool or getting a massage?) Thanks to our fulltime naturalist guides and an expert team of outfitters, all you have to do on any of our Latin America tours is go with the flow and have the time of your life.

Want to go a little further south?

Join us on one of our South America tours.

Here you’ll find that Machu Picchu is actually in a jungle. Travel by foot along the Inca Trail to the lost city, and you approach from above. No matter how many years it’s been on your bucket list, you will get the shivers the first time you see it. And if it’s the best-known place in Peru , it is far from the only amazing experience you’ll have on one of our South America trips. If you like your Andes spikier and more snow-capped, Chile is for you. Glaciers calve. Penguins mix with flamingos. Vineyards knit mild valleys into a neat green patchwork. In both countries, we’ll introduce you to local cultures from the Quechua descendants of the Incas to the gauchos of the pampas. Be sure to see our trips to the Galápagos as well; the editors of AFAR magazine named it the Best Wildlife Experience in the World.

A waterfall in latin America.

You have friends in all the right places.

Choose one of our Central America trips and you’re just one degree of separation from the brother and sister team who make the best ceviche in Belize ; and know the secret place to take you on the barrier reef to get the freshest of all ingredients. On our South America tours, you might as well be related to Andres, a Chilean who knows the most scenic footpath on the slopes of Osorno Volcano and friendliest gauchos in Patagonia . That toucan whisperer in Costa Rica? That’s Kenneth, a native tico, who knows more about the bird and animal life than anyone, and shares it all in the most engaging way.

An ancient temple in Latin America.

We take huge pride in the fact that Classic Journeys Latin America tour guides are super-well-connected locals — friendly souls who will pull you right into their circles. They’re natives who grew up down the street, shop in the village market, and can call in favors from the artisans, shepherds and chefs you want to meet.

We have to smile when we see how some tour companies tout the ‘Latin America’ tour guides they fly in to, say, Peru from the U.S. and Canada. Our lead guide Marisol only has to step out of her door to join your group. She lives in the historic center of Cusco and, let’s just say, she knows her way around!

A colorful city in Latin America.

Colombia Luxury Tours and Travel

Wherever your Colombia tour takes you, music and dance will accompany the journey. Colombia’s varied dance and music heritage blends indigenous, African, Cuban, Caribbean, and European influences, and is an integral part of every region from the high Andes to Caribbean beaches.

Costumed dancers perform energetically in the UNESCO World Heritage city of  Cartagena ’s Bolivar park. This impressive 16th-century city on the Caribbean coast exudes old-world charm. Other colonial towns like  Santa Marta ,  Popayán ,  Barichara , and  Villa de Leyva  are great examples of the country’s Spanish heritage. Santa Marta is also Colombia’s most popular beach town, and is part of the Caribbean coast in which cumbia, the country’s most popular dance style emerged. Another beach town,  Barranquilla , is best known for its fantastic annual carnival.

One of Colombia’s most interesting archaeological sites is  San Agustín , with chiseled stone sculptures weighing up to five tonnes scattered over a wide landscape. Further north is  Tierradentro , which has underground rock tombs covered with striking carvings and paintings similar to  San Agustín . Nearby is the city of  Cali , where salsa music and dancing often spill into the streets.

Colombia’s most famous export, coffee, is grown in the  Eje Cafetero  or the  Coffee Region , around lovely towns like  Finlandia  and  Salento . This region also has charming cities like  Armenia ,  Pereira , and  Medellín . The latter is worth visiting, for its botanical gardens, and for the Museum of Antioquia and Plaza Botero, to witness celebrated Colombian sculptor  Fernando Botero ’s works. Also part of the coffee triangle is  Pitalito , considered producer of Colombia’s best coffee, and the  Cocora Valley  with its 200-foot-high Quindío wax palm trees, and a promised hike into the cloud forest of  Los Nevados National Natural Park . No trip to Colombia is complete without an experience of its rainforests, bordering the Amazon, or its national parks and protected areas, which are a hotbed of ecotourism initiatives.

Also in the mountains is the capital city of  Bogotá  crowded with medieval cathedrals, modern buildings, and bustling marketplaces. Sample  arepas  (flat bread) and  empanadas  (dumplings) at street carts, and don’t miss out on  bandeja paisa  a local classic of rice, beans, meats, a fried egg, fried bananas, avocado, and  arepa .

Sabrosura  is a local Colombian concept, which roughly translates to a state of joy, a feeling of positivity and beauty. It’s a state you will achieve when you’ve experienced an authentic and perfectly planned trip to Colombia—one designed and executed by Enchanting Travels.

The best time of the year to visit Colombia depends on your chosen destinations and preferences. The country has  two distinctive seasons  – dry and wet, and the climate varies by region. The  dry season , from  December to March and June to August,  is most popular with travelers for offering pleasant weather conditions across Colombia, especially in cities and high-altitude destinations. Coastal areas like Cartagena and Tayrona National Park are attractive throughout the year. However,  most travelers prefer to visit in the dry season. Frequently asked questions, when is the best time to visit machu picchu.

Between April and October is the dry season, with the historic landmark becoming more crowded during the months of June and August. The hottest weather here also corresponds with the wet season – November to March. It’s worth noting that while Machu Picchu is open throughout the year, the Inca Trail is closed during February due to intense rainfall. Additionally, please keep in mind that the Inca Trail is restricted to 500 visitors per day – make a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment.

What language is spoken in Brazil?

The people of Brazil speak Brazilian Portuguese. While many phrases and words are similar to that of European Portuguese, you will find that there can be drastic differences in pronunciation and meaning when it comes to Brazilian Portuguese. We’d recommend bringing a phrasebook specific to Brazil for your convenience.

What’s the official currency of Chile?

The Chilean currency is the peso, which is divided into 100 centavos. You may hear locals informally refer to banknotes by the name of whoever is featured on them, such as an arturo for Arturo Prat on the 10,000 peso note, and a gabriela for the 5,000 peso note.

Lively cities dancing to the beat of a Samba drum, impeccable cuisine, ancient ruins and a hugely varied melting pot of historic culture and traditions – South America has something to offer everybody.

Luxury Latin America Blog

Luxury travel news and reviews for mexico, central america, and south america, luxury south america travel: which are the best destinations.

If you’ve never traveled to South America, it can be rather daunting to figure out which destinations are set up well for luxury travelers and which are not. The best luxury South America travel hotspots are not always obvious since the region doesn’t get nearly as much press coverage as Europe and North America—thus the reason for the founding of this publication.

Cartegena Colombia

We traveled far and wide in this region before even launching in 2007, then our editorial team and correspondents have criss-crossed the continent ever since looking for the “best of the best” in each country. Here’s where to start in South America if you want to plan a vacation where you’ll find top luxury lodging, great tour companies, and excellent restaurants.

Luxury South America Travel in Cartagena, Colombia

Starting at the top of the continent, beautiful Cartagena is replete with luxury lodging and increasingly excellent restaurants. The UNESCO-designated heart of the city is a maze of colorful Colonial buildings, several ancient fortresses, and religious convents. Despite the international press’s lingering portrayal of Colombia as a violent place, there has been a lot of national and local investment in Cartagena to make it a safe place for tourists to visit. It’s a favorite for international conferences and the international airport is just 15 minutes from downtown.

Cartagena is Colombia’s fifth-largest city, with a square mileage that resembles Chicago. Average year-round temperatures hover around 85 degrees and this port city is a major center of shipping trade and cruise tourism. The city’s centro historico is where you will find the best boutique hotels like Hotel Sofitel Santa Clara , Casa San Agustin , and Hotel Boutique Ananda , while the InterContinental Cartagena is a great choice for anyone who wants a beachside experience.

Cusco, Peru – the South America Tourism Magnet

Belmond Monasterio Cusco

The jumping-off point for many travelers on their way to Machu Picchu, Cusco (sometimes spelled Cuzco) is one of the most enchanting and attractive cities in Latin America. Located at a height of 11,000 feet/3,500 meters in the Andes, the city is a mix of ancient Inca walls and colonial architecture, with surprises at the end of every cobblestone alley.

To take advantage of some of that Colonial decadence, stay at Aranwa’s Cusco Boutique hotel , a restored Colonial building with all the modern amenities. Or, relax at the Belmond Hotel Monasterio , one of the city’s most luxurious stays in an ancient monastery on the city’s Nazarenas Plaza (with easy transport to their sister hotel in Machu Picchu on the luxury Hiram Bingham train service ). More tech-inclined travelers might want to stay at the Inkaterra La Casona or the also intimate Casa Cartagena .

Wherever you stay be sure to take advantage of the stunning architecture of the city as well as delicious local fare and shopping for Peruvian handicrafts and textiles.

Sacred Valley of Peru – Spoiled for Choices

Rio Sagrada Peru

While many travelers to Peru head straight from Cusco to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley that lies between the two has started to convince luxury travelers of all stripes to add this idyllic valley to their itineraries for a few days. There are dozens of sites worth visiting here, such as Pisac, known for its archeological ruins and lively crafts market, and Ollantaytambo, home of an ancient Incan fortress. All the while you’ll find yourself gawking at the spectacular mountain scenery and the impressive history in this part of the world.

There is an ever-growing choice of upscale lodges and resorts so that when the adventure is over at the end of the day, you head back not only to a place to sleep but a real oasis for the soul and body. Some properties focus on wellness and relaxation, such as The Aranwa Resort and Spa and Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado . Others are more about adventure and getting to know the local culture, such as Explora Valle Sagrado . For something a little homier, stay in a casita at the Sol y Luna Lodge & Spa and get pampered at their Yacu Wasi spa.

One-of-a-kind Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands Marine Iguana Ecuador

Machu Picchu may be South America’s most iconic wonder of the world, but plenty of upscale travelers have the Galapagos Islands at the top of their bucket list. There’s no place quite like it on the planet, with animals that have so few predators that they’re not afraid of us odd creatures that are far larger. Guides continually have to chide visitors for getting too close because the fur seals, blue-footed boobies, and marine iguanas aren’t phased by two-legged giants with a camera.

The best way to visit the islands is on a luxury cruise where everything is taken care of, with fine food, excellent guides, and snorkeling stops. See our luxury Ecuador tours section for Galapagos stories with Ecoventura, Quasar, and other companies. If you want to spend a little more time in the area and be close to giant tortoises, check into the top Galapagos luxury hotels here .

Sultry Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Emiliano Rio de Janeiro

Long a destination for upscale travelers from other parts of Latin America, Brazil in general and Rio more specifically is back on the itineraries of luxury travelers from the rest of the world. This massive urbanscape offers incredible food, soul-feeding music, world-class shopping, and a handful of famous beaches to boot. Despite the international press’s attitude that Rio is wild and dangerous, the city (and country) have made positive steps to ease travel for visitors here and in their growing portfolio of luxury accommodations.

The best luxury digs in Rio are in the upscale neighborhoods near their two famous beaches – Copacabana and Ipanema. The Hotel Fasano is right on the Ipanema beachfront is a homage to minimalist modernism, with understated and sophisticated interiors designed by architect Philippe Starck. Emiliano Rio is its biggest competition for the sophisticated urban set, but beachside on Copacabana. The JW Marriott is great for the business traveler that still wants luxury and a great location for exploring Copacabana beach and Rio in general.

Last but surely not least is the Belmond Copacabana Palace , the city’s first luxury hotel that continues to be a step above its competitors in service and facilities.

Atacama Desert, Chile

Atacama desert Chile

One of the world’s most arid places, the Atacama Desert is replete with salt flats, volcanoes, geysers, and a landscape often compared to the lunar surface. In fact, simulations for space travel are often performed there–plus this is one of the best spots worldwide for star-gazing.

Several high-end tours will allow you to explore the area’s stark and stunning landscape with some of the best luxe glamping and other accommodations in the country. There are so many opportunities for trekking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, hot springs, astronomy, bicycling, and other outdoor activities that both nascent adventurers and adrenaline junkies can find their place in the excursions of Atacama .

In the area’s main city, San Pedro de Atacama, you will find the Nayara Alto Atacama hotel , Explora Atacama , Awasi hotel , and Tierra Atacama Boutique Hotel & Spa , each with a variety of amenities and excursions on offer, with Explora topping the list in terms of activities and facilities.

Further south in Copiapo is Hotel Wara which feels more like a private house than a hotel, whose seven bedrooms each have their own private gardens, fireplaces, and huge en-suite bathrooms. Casa Molle is another tempting alternative to staying outside of San Pedro, an all-inclusive hideaway further north with bocce ball courts and horseback riding.

Mendoza, Argentina – the Wine Capital of South America

Wine tasting in Mendoza

Mendoza is all about pleasure and is a dream for foodies and wine-obsessed travelers, particularly those that love Malbec, the king of wines in this area. Eating, drinking, and lazing about can take up days of travel if you do it right, and Argentina’s knowledgeable upscale travel companies know just how to show you the best of the best of this gorgeous wine-producing region. Wineries with on-site lodging, expansive estancias, and boutique hotels abound in this part of Argentina; you can have your pick depending on the kind of experience you want.

Algodon Wine Estates has great food and wine as well as a championship golf course and world-class tennis facility. Cavas Wine Lodge has a vinotherapy spa and stand-alone villas that provide the ultimate in privacy amidst the grape vines.

Vines of Mendoza features food by the uber-famous chef Francis Mallman and Entre Cielos Luxury Wine Hotel and Spa has the first traditional Turkish hammam in Latin America. Most luxury lodging in this region will put you right in the middle of the vineyards with incredible views of the Andes in the distance, and only minutes from exploring other vineyards in the area.

Santiago, Chile

Singular Santiago Chile

Just one of South America’s awesome urban centers, Santiago offers all the things that make for a great travel – top notch restaurants, excellent local wine, quirky neighborhoods, a vibrant nightlife, and hundreds of alleyways to meander checking out art galleries and bookshops. Santiago is also a great base for exploring the surrounding wine country and other outdoor attractions like small rural towns and horseback riding.

With some of South America’s most developed tourism infrastructure, in Chile there’s a plethora of great places to stay that will allow you to explore the city and come home to luxury at the end of the day. The city’s best hotels are clustered together, with one group residing in the Bellavista and Lastarria neighborhoods – The Aubrey hotel , Hotel Magnolia, Hotel Luciano and The Singular Santiago .

The other cluster includes the Ritz-Carlton , the Mandarin Oriental , and the W Santiago just slightly further from the center of the city, closer to the Los Condes area. Wherever you stay in Santiago be sure to take advantage of the city’s green spaces and some top-notch museums and cultural landmarks.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Palacio Duhau Buenos Aires

Often called the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires oozes old-world style and timeless decadence. The city’s French-inspired architecture, lively cafe culture, and collection of high-end hotels and restaurants have been perennial draws for the world’s most affluent travelers. The Four Seasons Buenos Aires , Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt and Alvear Palace Hotel are in the heart of Recoleta, one of the city’s upscale neighborhoods where ladies lunch and porteños sip exquisite Argentine wine in posh sidewalk cafes. This just may be the oldest luxury South America travel destination on the continent, despite its many ups and downs.

The over-the-top Faena Hotel is found in the new-money Puerto Madero neighborhood and the Park Tower, a Luxury Collection Hotel is located amongst the high-end shopping and wide boulevards of Retiro, the city’s wealthiest area. Travel to Argentina’s capital is all about pleasure – a steak at Don Julio’s or a leisurely Sunday brunch at Casa Cavia are a good start – so make sure to come with plenty of time to linger over a tango show and money to purchase the incredible leather goods you will find across the city.

Punta del Este, Uruguay

Punta del este luxury South America travel

The playground of the rich and famous jet-setters, Punta del Este has long had some of South America’s most exclusive and expensive real estate and logically some great luxury accommodations for those not quite ready to buy. The area might not have the nightlife of Rio nor the isolated elegance of Patagonia, but it is a place where if you have the right bank balance you can enjoy beautiful beaches, great food, and some excellent craft beer. Luxury hotels here are usually in Punta del Este or the more northern and super-elite coastal area of Jose Ignacio.

In Bahía Vik each room is uniquely decorated by a local artist and the low-profile Fasano Las Piedras has been voted the Best Hotel in Latin America. There are also plenty of high-end rentals to be had along this strip of coast, so if you want a more private experience, or are bringing the whole family it would behoove you to look into those as well.

Patagonia – South America’s Adventure Playground

Chile Patagonia excursion

The southernmost tip of the Americas, Patagonia is an outdoor adventurers’ dream. Shared by both Chile and Argentina, the area is divided by the Andes mountains and icefields. The Argentine side has vast grasslands north of the mountains, where the country’s ranchers have traditionally dominated, while the Chilean side is dissected by fjords and has several ski resorts . But the outdoor focus of this region doesn’t mean rough living – you’ll find a deluge of hospitality options that will pamper you even more than a big sophisticated city in both Argentina and Chile .

Argentina’s Lake District in the northwestern part of this country’s chunk of Patagonia is a collection of lush forests, glacial lakes, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. The country’s rustic-chic estancias are a favorite among luxury travelers for their impeccable service in a down-to-earth atmosphere . Highly social affairs, at this type of upscale lodging, guests mix and mingle with each other and their hosts. Most offer a bevy of activities like horseback riding, trekking, and fishing as well as incredible meat-forward menus and long lists of the country’s exquisite wine.

Chile’s slice of Patagonia includes the Torres del Paine National Park and Pumalin Park, a vast private park created and owned by the late American conservationist Douglas Tompkins . You can even set out from here for a luxe adventure aboard a private cruise ship to Antarctica or the Chilean fjords . Luxury lodging abounds in both countries and few travelers return from this area without feeling exhilarated.

Have you been to any of these luxury South America travel hotspots? What was it like for you?
