Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12: The Masters

by Danny Bivens - April 17, 2011, 2:02 pm EDT Total comments: 3

Does Tiger Woods plus The Masters equal win and awesome on the Wii?

Electronic Arts has found great success with the Tiger Woods franchise on the Wii. With the Wii version of the game providing some of the best golf experiences on the market, this success is well deserved. Although last year's version of Tiger Woods featured the Ryder Cup, this year EA went all out and for the first time in franchise history has included one of the most iconic tournaments in the golfing world, The Masters.

The presentation in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is amazing. The inclusion of broadcasting icon Jim Nantz really brings a level of realism to the game, as Nantz is the prominent voice for various PGA tours and The Masters event itself. EA has also added some new gameplay modes with a focus on The Masters. The mode with the most depth is “Road to the Masters,” which is essentially a career mode. Starting out at the very bottom of the rankings, you work your way up from local charity events, to PGA Tours, and eventually make your way to the prestigious Masters tournament. In addition, in Road to the Masters, EA has added a mode called Masters Moments, which puts the player through nine classic moments in Masters history. After clearing each moment, players unlock sections of a gallery that give a behind the scenes look at the classic course at Augusta National and the Masters Tournament. It is very impressive and full of interesting information. EA has also included a mode called Tiger at the Masters, where the player tries to guide Tiger Woods to each of his four green jacket victories.

While the addition of The Masters was huge, EA still included several other new features in Tiger 12. The inclusion of the Caddie is perhaps one of the most welcome to the series. The caddie suggests shots and gives you general advice when playing a course. Long time players of the series might not need to use him very often, but players who are not familiar with golf or the game will find the caddie extremely useful. EA has also added a new Tee Placement option, which allows players to adjust the ball left or right within the boundaries of the tee marker. A new Practice Range also gives you the option to earn experience for your created golfer or to simply practice with any of the golfers in the game. The Practice Range includes a driving range, chipping green and putting green. Online play also makes a return this year giving players the option of competing in head to head play in traditional or disc golf, participate in live daily and weekly tournaments, and instant challenges where players receive challenges from other gamers while playing any of the offline game modes.

Visually, Tiger 12 is uneven. Most of the courses and locations are very nicely done, with lush grass and foliage. When you first start golfing on a course, the camera does a dramatic sweep in and really shows off just how good the locations appear on the Wii. During this theatrical sweep, there is the occasional stutter with the frame rate, however these are few and far between. The character models are a little bit underwhelming and have a last-generation feel to them. Overall, though, Tiger 12 is a decent looking Wii game.

Controls in this year's offering are solid. EA again gives gamers the option to use Wii Motion Plus to make Tiger 12 one of the most realistic golfing experiences on the market. The Wii Balance Board is also supported in this version as well, adding to the level of realism. On the Arcade difficulty level, gamers will earn points toward a power shot by keeping their balance steady. Using the Pro level, players will have to maintain balance in order to attain one hundred percent power with their swing. It is a great inclusion in the game and continues to show how EA is committed to making a great golfing experience on the Wii.

For gamers out there who are not so serious about golf, Tiger Woods 12 offers a plethora of party games. Most of the party games made appearances in previous Tiger games on the Wii, but that does not detract from how much fun they can be. Perhaps one of the most solid of these is Disc Golf. Originally introduced in Tiger Woods 10, Disc Golf is still one of the most fun parts of the game. The Disc Golf and other party games could almost be a separate game by themselves.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is a fantastic golf offering. The implementation of The Masters into the game is flawless and brings more realism to the overall package. While the visuals are not some of the best that you will find on the Wii, the game more than makes up for it in other areas. Other features, such as the new Tee Placement, Practice Range, online play, and a very helpful caddie you can call upon at will make this year's iteration a good choice for die hard golf fans or those that have skipped out on EA's golf outings for the past few years.

  • Great control
  • Wii Balance Board Support
  • Wonderful implementation of The Masters
  • Character models seem dated

I likely will skip this year's game, as I'm content with TW 11. However, the Masters inclusion made my brother run out and buy it, despite having an untouched copy of TW 11. I know he's digging it a lot, especially with the nifty Chicken Stick accessory that is a regular golf club cut in half with a place to put the Wii Remote w/ MotionPlus on the bottom of the club. That accessory is boss as hell.

I have Tiger Woods 10, but skipped last year's version, so this sounds like a pretty big step up for me. I'm still recovering from a broken ankle, though, so standing up isn't the most comfortable thing for me to do right now. I'll probably pick this up in a few months.

Did a quick search for the Chicken Stick and it looks really nice. However, it costs $40, and that's a lot for an Wii remote accessory.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters Cheats

This page contains a list of cheats, codes, Easter eggs, tips, and other secrets for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters for Wii . If you've discovered a cheat you'd like to add to the page, or have a correction, please click EDIT and add it .

This glitch only works for the Road to the Masters mode. This glitch works for all of the tournaments but is the most effective when used on the four star tournaments and the major championships. Before you start the round, set the difficulty at Tournament and play ONLY the first hole. When the second hole loads up, SAVE and EXIT from the tournament and go back to your options screen. Then change the difficultly from Tournament to Amateur then proceed to resume the tournament by hitting the X button to resume and play holes 2 thru 17 on Amateur. On hole 18, Save and Exit again, return to the Options screen and switch the difficulty back to Tournament and resume the tournament by hitting the X button and play hole 18. By doing this you will receive the XP payout for playing the tournament on Tournament difficulty even though you played 16 holes of the tournament on Amateur. Average XP payout is 25000-35000 XP. And as an added bonus, the very first time you do this glitch you get a difficult to obtain No Focus pin and the Tournament Pro Achievement/Trophy.

Tiger Woods’ 15-year-old son Charlie will try to qualify for PGA Tour event

A Woods could play in next week’s PGA Tour event.

In a surprise announcement early Wednesday afternoon, the PGA Tour said Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, is playing the Cognizant Classic pre-qualifier on Thursday. Charlie Woods will play at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, one of four pre-qualifier sites, and about 25 players and ties from there will move on to Monday’s qualifier, where four players will earn spots into the Cognizant.

The news follows the elder Woods’ whirlwind week at last week’s Genesis Invitational , where he was making his first Tour start since last April at the Masters, only to withdraw during Friday’s second round due to what he later described as the flu. On Monday, Woods had introduced his new apparel brand , Sun Day Red, and on Thursday, he had opened his season with an up-and-down one-over 72 at Riviera Country Club that included five birdies, six bogeys — and a shocking shank on the 18th hole that he later blamed on a back spasm.

On Friday, though, Woods played six holes, teed off on the 7th and withdrew, carted away by PGA Tour rules official Pete Dachisen. Uncertainty followed . Mark Dusbabek told Golf Channel viewers that the WD was not due to his back, but because of an illness. An ambulance and two fire trucks appeared at Riviera. Medical professionals entered and exited the clubhouse every few minutes. After a while, the fire trucks and ambulance left.

They were followed later by Woods. At about 3:40 p.m. local time, Woods exited, driven away by an official in a red Genesis coupe, and Rob McNamara, a longtime Woods confidante, released this question-and-answer statement via the PGA Tour communications team:

Question: “With the WD, was it purely illness? Was it — just explain it.”

McNamara: “Yeah. So he started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night. Woke up this morning, they were worse than the night previous. He had a little bit of a fever and that, and was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy. Ultimately the doctors are saying he’s got some — potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated. He’s been treated with an IV bag and he’s doing much, much better and he’ll be released on his own here soon.”

Question “Just to confirm, with all the EMT trucks, you know, everybody, the personnel here, everybody was thinking there was a lot of seriousness going on. So nothing structural as far as back or ankle or …”

McNamara: “Correct, correct. Not physical at all; his back’s fine. It was all medical illness, dehydration, which is now the symptoms are reversing themselves now that he’s had an IV.”

After his round, playing partner Gary Woodland said Woods didn’t look “right.” He said he was quieter, and he expressed hope that Woods would be OK.

Tiger Woods, in a 4-sentence statement, explains his stunning Genesis exit

Saturday, Woods said he was. At 10:15 a.m. local time, his social media accounts shared this :

“I would like to confirm that I had to withdraw from @thegenesisinv due to illness, which we now know is influenza. I am resting and feeling better. Good luck to the players this weekend. I’m disappointed to not be there and want to thank @GenesisUSA and all the fans for the support.”

It was unclear, though, when Woods would try to play again. But now there is news on his son — on Thursday, Charlie Woods will tee off at 7:39 a.m. ET. Part of his group includes Olin Browne Jr., the son of the three-time Tour winner.

Notably, in 1992, it was at Riviera, the site of the Genesis, where Woods had made his Tour debut, as a 16-year-old. Now his son will attempt to make his.

While the younger Woods, a high school sophomore, has never played in a Tour event, he has played four times at the PNC Championship, a nationally broadcast event in December where major winners play with family members — and Team Woods has played well. In 2020, they tied for fifth; in 2021, they were runners-up; in 2022, they tied for eighth; and last year, they tied for fifth.

Before play last year, Charlie Woods had also tied for 17th in the boys 14-15 division at last fall’s Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship — with Tiger Woods caddying for him. Charlie had also been a part of a state-championship winning golf team at the Benjamin School, a private institution in Palm Beach Gardens.

In an interview with GOLF’s Alan Bastable last December , Toby Harbeck, the team’s coach, described the attention Charlie had been receiving. Bastable wrote it this way:

During one of the tournament rounds, Harbeck was chatting with Charlie on the 8th hole, a straight-away par-5 lined by condos down the right side. “I look up,” Harbeck recalled, “and I’m watching all these doors to the condos opening up and all these people come out because they knew he was there.” On the second day, after inclement weather had suspended play, more than a hundred players, coaches, spectators and members took shelter in the clubhouse. Harbeck gathered his team at an out-of-the-way corner table, but Charlie still was sought out for pictures and autographs. Fans flock to Charlie on the course, too. At one event, an armada of 30 golf carts awaited him on the first tee.

At another match, Harbeck said a couple of photographers tried to access the course but because Harbeck didn’t know them, he turned them away. At public-course host sites, paparazzi wrangling is trickier. “You can’t stop anyone from coming, and if Tiger’s there, it’s crazier,” Harbeck said. “Trust me, there are people in trees taking pictures. Microphones in his face.” After the first couple of weeks of the season, Harbeck learned to alert host sites in advance of the interest that Charlie stirs up, which he said led to some courses beefing up their security.

What’s Charlie Woods’ golf game like? We asked his high school coach

As for Tiger Woods’ assessment of his son’s game, he said at the PNC that his biggest development has come through course management. Woods described it as “understanding how to hit shots.”

“I enjoyed caddying for him and being there with him,” Woods said, “just to talk through shots with him and have him understand what I would see or how — the thought process I would have going through shots. He would bounce things off of me, and give him my take on certain things.

“And sometimes he doesn’t see it the way I saw it, which is fun, but I think it’s the understanding of how to hit the proper shot at the proper time. And that’s what all kids have to learn is when do I hit a certain shot at the right time, or how do I take stuff off a shot, how do I hit it a little bit harder, what do I need to do.

“You can do that at home all you want, but under tournament conditions, it’s just so different. And being able to share that with him, share my experiences with him in game-time mode, I think that it was great for both of us because I think we both are able to learn from it and grow from it. I think I learned to be a better teacher with it, and I think that he became a better player because of it.”

Charlie Woods, son of Tiger, to compete in pre-qualifier for PGA Tour event

  • Son of Tiger Woods, 15, to bid for place in PGA Tour event
  • Charlie Woods will attempt pre-qualifying starting Thursday

Charlie Woods, the son of 15-times major winner Tiger Woods , will compete in a pre-qualifier event as he bids to secure a place in the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic next week in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The 15-year-old Woods will play on Thursday in an 18-hole event at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, one of four pre-qualifying sites, the PGA Tour website reported on Wednesday.

Approximately 25 players and ties from each of the four pre-qualifying sites will advance to a Monday qualifier, from which four players will earn spots in the Cognizant Classic from 29 February through March 3 at PGA National Resort.

Among those in the field for the Cognizant Classic are major winners Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland.

Woods is scheduled to tee off at 7.39am ET (12.39pm GMT) on Thursday alongside Olin Browne Jr – son of three-times PGA Tour winner Olin Browne – and Ruaidhri Mcgee.

Woods has competed with his father in the last four editions of the PNC Championship – a 36-hole event featuring two-player teams made up of a major champion and a family member – and finished runner-up in 2021 .

Tiger Woods, who entered the year aiming to play one event a month, withdrew during the second round of last week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera due to the flu, which brought an abrupt end to his first PGA Tour start since last April’s Masters.

Tiger Woods playing with Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland in first official PGA Tour event since Masters

L OS ANGELES — Tiger Woods' official return to competitive golf since withdrawing from the 2023 Masters will come early Thursday in a grouping made up of three local stars.

Woods will tee off at 12:25 p.m. (9:25 a.m. local) for the first round of the Genesis Invitational, a tournament he hosts at Riviera Country Club. Woods, from Jupiter Island, is playing with Tequesta's Justin Thomas and Delray Beach's Gary Woodland.

Woodland is making his fourth start since returning from surgery to remove a tumor from his brain.

Wood, 48, had ankle surgery two weeks after the Masters and did not play a competitive round of golf until early December at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

Two weeks later, he played with his son Charlie in the PNC Championship in Orlando. The Genesis is his first official PGA Tour event since the latest setback.

While he was "able to knock a lot of the rust off" at Hero, Woods said his "hands felt better with control hitting shots" at the PNC.

Woods unveiled his new clothing line, "Sun Day Red," Monday. He played a nine-hole practice round on Tuesday morning wearing that apparel.

Woods' goal this year is to play one event a month through the majors season, a schedule that, barring a setback, will include Genesis, The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky.; U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and British Open at Royal Troon.

"We have set up right now the biggest events are one per month," Woods said in December. "It sets itself up for that. Now, I need to get myself ready for all that."

More: Why Tiger Woods did not use a cart during Friday's pro-am at PNC Championship

It was at this event three years ago that Woods was involved in a serious rollover car crash south of Los Angeles that severely injured his lower right leg, ankle and foot.

Woodland, Thomas also on comeback trail

Woodland and Thomas also are looking for comeback seasons in 2024, but for different reasons.

Woodland returned last month at the Sony Open in Hawaii after undergoing surgery Sept. 18 This is his fourth start of the season. He is looking to make his first cut.

Thomas has turned around his game after a disappointing 2023 that saw him miss the playoffs, snapping a streak of seven consecutive appearances in the Tour Championship. He has made three starts this season with two top 10s and a 12th place finish in last weekend's Phoenix Open.

Walking Tour: Kitai Gorod

Kitai Gorod, with its twisting and winding streets, is the oldest section of Moscow outside the Kremlin. The literal translation of Kitai Gorod is "Chinatown," but there has never been a Chinese settlement here. The origin of the word kitai is disputed; it may come from the Tatar word for fortress, but most likely it derives from the Russian word kita, in reference to the bundles of twigs that were used to reinforce the earthen wall that once surrounded the area.

Kitai Gorod begins where Red Square ends. Settlement of this area began in the 12th century, around the time that the fortified city of Moscow was founded on Borovitsky Hill (the site of the present-day Kremlin). By the 14th century Kitai Gorod was a thriving trade district, full of shops and markets. At that time it was surrounded by earthen ramparts, which were replaced in the 16th century by a fortified wall, remnants of which still remain. As Moscow grew, so did Kitai Gorod.

At the time of the Bolshevik Revolution it was the city's most important financial and commercial district, with major banks, warehouses, and trading companies concentrated here. These days the multitude of shops, restaurants, and banks demonstrates the area's reasserted role as an energized commercial center.

A good starting point for your tour is Nikolskaya ulitsa, which begins at the corner opposite the Historical Museum and runs along the north side of GUM. If you are coming from St. Basil's, walk away from St. Basil's toward the Historical Museum alongside GUM. If you are coming from outside of Red Square, get to Nikolskaya by way of Teatralnaya Ploshchad (Theater Square). If you are standing with your back to the Bolshoi on this square, walk straight ahead, cross the street, and enter one of the narrow passageways to the right or left of the Teatralnaya metro station (as you are facing it). Taking a right out of either passageway will bring you to Nikolskaya ulitsa. Go a short way farther to the right, to the cobblestone edge of Red Square, to begin your walk.

Nikolskaya ulitsa, which is named after the Kremlin's Nikolskaya Gate Tower, is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. At the corner with Red Square is the Kazansky Sobor . Leaving the church, take a left to make your way through the teeming crowds of shoppers on Nikolskaya ulitsa to No. 7, the Zaikonospassky Monastyr , the former Slavonic-Greco-Latin Academy now undergoing a slow restoration. Farther down the street, also on the left-hand side, is a once brightly painted white-and-aqua building with an elaborate facade (No. 15). The building was erected in 1810-14 on the site of the 16th-century Pechatny Dvor (Printing Yard), where Russia's first printed book was assembled in 1553. Today the building houses the Moscow Institute of Historical Records and the Moscow Humanitarian University. Cross the street to go down Bogoyavlensky pereulok. Halfway down the block, opposite the entrance to the Ploshchad Revolutsii metro, is the Bogoyavlensky Sobor . Continue down the street to where it intersects with ulitsa Ilinka. Before the 1917 revolution this was Moscow's Wall Street, and it is still lined with the impressive facades of former banks.

On the left-hand corner stands the former Ryabushinsky Bank . As you cross the street, look to your right; ulitsa Ilinka leads directly to the Kremlin's Tower of the Savior. At No. 3 stands the Tserkov Svyatoi Ilii church from which the street takes its name. The church, which dates to 1520, is in disrepair except for its facade. Opposite the church is one of the border streets of the Gostinny Dvor merchant's arcade. Turn left and walk the length of Khrustalny pereulok to reach one of the oldest streets in Moscow, Varvarka ulitsa. The opposite side of the street is lined with quaint old churches and buildings, but the first thing you'll likely notice is the gray bulk of the massive, concrete-and-glass Rossiya, one of Europe's largest and most unattractive hotels.

At the farthest corner of the street, to your right, is the Tserkov Velikomuchenitsy Varvary . Adjacent is the English Court . Next comes the white-stone Tserkov Maksima Blazhennovo . The pointed bell tower situated just before the semicircle sidewalk leading to the upper-level entrance of the Rossiya hotel was once attached to the redbrick Znamensky Sobor on the other side of the sidewalk; with its foundation on the slope below, it is set back from the street. At No. 10 is the Palaty Romanovych v Zaryadye , believed to be the birthplace of Tsar Mikhail Romanov. Before leaving Varvarka ulitsa take note of the last church, the blue Tserkov Georgiya na Pskovskoy Gorke at No. 12.

If you stand to the left of the church (on the walkway leading to the Rossiya hotel) you can glimpse a remnant of Kitai Gorod's 16th-century brick fortification wall. It is to your left, opposite the hotel's eastern facade. Cross to the other side of Varvarka ulitsa and walk a short hop past the final church. Make a right and climb up the narrow Ipatevsky pereulok, which leads to several government and administrative buildings. At the top of the incline to the right is one of Moscow's best-preserved 17th-century churches, the Tserkov Troitsy v Nikitnikach .

Continue down the lane to the right of the church to reach Novaya Ploshchad, or New Square, which is more like a boulevard than a square. To your right, at the far bottom of the hill, Slavyanskaya Ploshchad opens up. At the bottom of the hill is the redbrick Tserkov Vsekh Svyatykh na Kulishkakh . From Novaya Ploshchad stroll for a long block or two past the government buildings, where the Central Committee of the Communist Party once sat. Now these buildings house the Duma of the Moscow Region. Soon you will come to the beginning of a busy intersection. To your right, in the median strip that divides Novaya Ploshchad, is a park that holds the Plevna Memorial, an octagonal, towerlike monument commemorating the Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Plevna in the Russo-Turkish War (1878). Keep walking up the street on the left side to go to the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy , a small museum on Moscow's history.

Note the building on the opposite side of the street that takes up the entire block. This is the Politekhnichesky Muzey , a museum of science and technology. Directly north of this museum is yet another museum, Muzey Mayakovskovo , which includes a re-creation of the study of the great revolutionary poet. A short distance from here, Novaya Ploshchad intersects with the circular Lubyanskaya Ploshchad , where you can behold the Lubyanka Prison and the former KGB headquarters, which now house the FSB -- the New Russia's federal security service. On the west side of the square is Detsky Mir, a large department store that used to specialize in toys but now carries all sorts of items.

Walk past Lubyanskaya Ploshchad to the west side, down to where it converges with the broad street of Teatralny proyezd, Moscow's most elite shopping street. On a side street to your right stands the ornate and luxurious Savoy hotel (3 Rozhdestvenka ulitsa), which, like the nearby Metropol hotel, was built in connection with the celebrations in the early 20th century honoring 300 years of the Romanov dynasty. On the left-hand side of the street you will pass a statue of Ivan Fyodorov, the printer who produced Russia's first book at the old Printing Yard on Nikolskaya ulitsa. The arched gateway just to the right of the statue links Teatralny proyezd with Nikolskaya ulitsa, the street on which you started the tour. Teatralny proyezd leads into Teatralnaya Ploshchad, site of three of Moscow's most important theaters.

Taking up the block on the southeast corner, the first building you will encounter to your left as you approach Teatralnaya Ploshchad is the Metropol , an art nouveau hotel. Reaching the square, you will see at the center a large monument to Karl Marx, carved on the spot from a 200-ton block of granite and unveiled in 1961. Across the boulevard stands the Bolshoi Theater , flanked on the left, on the corner farthest away from you, by the Central Children's Theater, and, to the right, by the Maly Theater . Turn left at the corner of the Metropol, and walk by the park and the hotel's main entrance. The large redbrick wall ahead is the other surviving remnant of the 16th-century fortification wall that once surrounded Kitai Gorod.

The wall has been heavily rebuilt, and a new tower has been added. Inside the tower are a couple of restaurants and bars. When you reach the Teatralnaya/Ploshchad Revolutsii metro station, take a moment to admire the exterior of the massive redbrick building on the corner -- the Muzey V. I. Lenina . If you still have some time but not much energy, consider hopping on Trolleybus 2, which can be caught at the bus stop opposite the Bolshoi Theater. The trolley ride takes about 45 minutes and makes a loop passing by Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, Ploshchad Pobedi (Victory Square -- note the obelisk topped by an angel), the Borodino Battle Panorama (in a circular blue pavilion), Kievsky vokzal (train station), the Novy Arbat, and Alexander Garden, before returning to Teatralnaya Ploshchad. You can purchase a ticket for 10R from the driver. Try to have exact change. Make sure to punch the ticket on board the bus.

Taken at a leisurely pace, with stops at least to glance at the interiors of the many churches along the route, this walk should take about five hours. If you intend to take a quick look at the exhibits in the museums along the way, you'll need an entire day. Both the Politekhnichesky Muzey and the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy are worth coming back to for a more leisurely look at their holdings.
