Door stoppers, what to consider.

There are several types of portable door locks available today, and you’ll need to select the best option for your application. If you’re traveling, door strike locks are small and lightweight, making them easy to pack. Door stops or braces are another option for regular hinged doors, though they tend to be bigger, and some even have a built-in alarm that sounds if someone tries to open the door. For sliding doors, you’ll likely need a security bar, which are often too big to comfortably fit in a suitcase.

When buying a portable door lock, it’s important to ensure the product you select is compatible with your door. Some locks only work if the door has a specific type of door strike or gap of a certain size, so if possible, you’ll want to double-check these measurements before you buy.

How We Selected

To find the best portable door locks for a variety of situations, we looked for top-rated models in a range of styles. We aimed to find the best lock for a variety of situations and door types, evaluating products based on their installation requirements, materials, ease of use, and price. We read through dozens of user reviews, as well, taking note of how the product performs in real-life scenarios.

The Addalock Portable Door Lock is a top choice for use at home or while traveling. It has a compact, lightweight design that’s easy to pack into a carry-on bag, and it can be used on most doors that are hinged and swing inwards.

It's also a cinch to use: Just insert its claws into the door’s strike plate, then close the door. The red piece can then be attached to the metal component, preventing the door from being opened, even if someone has a key. It’s a great solution for apartments, dorms, and even Airbnbs, but some users do note that it doesn’t work on certain hotel doors.

If you only need a door lock for occasional use, this budget-friendly option will get the job done. It has a simple design that attaches to the door strike, plus it's reversible, with two openings that can be used on door strikes of different shapes.

This lock is compact enough to carry in your purse or briefcase, and it can be installed in just a few minutes. Once the red component is attached to the metal piece, no one will be able to open the door until the lock is removed.

The GE Door Stop alarm functions like a traditional door stop—you slide the sloped edge underneath the door, and it makes it harder (though not impossible) for someone to push the door open. But it adds an additional layer of security, thanks to a built-in alarm.

If the door is opened, the force will press down the top of the door stop, which activates a 120-decibel alarm. The unit requires a 9-volt battery for operation, and there’s a switch that allows you to deactivate the alarm as needed—important if you’re planning to travel with it.

In terms of versatility, it’s hard to beat the Master Lock Door Security Bar. This unique bar can be used on both hinged and sliding doors, and it adjusts from 27.5 to 42 inches long.

The bar is made from heavy-duty 20-gauge steel, and when it’s used on a hinged door, it has a removable head that cradles the door handle, as well as a pivoting rubber foot that braces against the floor. To use it on a sliding door, you simply remove the head and adjust its length so it fits snugly inside the door track.

Whether you’re staying at a hotel, Airbnb, or even a hostel, you can give yourself peace of mind while traveling with this portable door lock. The design is more compact and lightweight than other door strike locks — small enough to stash it in your pocket. Plus, the design works well on most hotel doors, according to reviewers. It’s compatible with door bolts of all sizes and doors of all thicknesses, and it can be set up in just a few seconds.

The DoorJammer Portable Door Lock is a brace-style device that works on any inward-swinging door—no need to worry about whether it will fit onto the door strike.

One side slides underneath the bottom of the door, and the other has an adjustable foot that creates pressure, preventing the door from being pushed open. The brace comes with an extension foot and a three-size keyring to fit into a door gap, plus a travel bag. It can be used on any type of flooring, including carpeting, hardwood, tile, and more.

If you want to prevent a deadbolt from being opened from the exterior, the LOKmate Deadbolt Guard is a handy temporary solution. It works on inward-swinging doors that have a deadbolt on either the right or left side, and it can be adjusted to accommodate multiple lock positions, including horizontal, vertical, and diagonal deadbolts.

In terms of installation, it snaps on quickly thanks to its magnetic design—no tools needed—and it even folds flat when not in use. The piece is made of plastic, which may be a drawback for some.

Many security bars for sliding doors are designed to be permanently installed, but this one from Lakeside Collection simply has rubber tips on either end to keep it in place. It’s made from a combination of steel and PVC, and it can be adjusted between 26 and 48 inches. The rubber tips ensure it won’t scratch the door frame, and it’s quick and easy to install and remove.

If you need a reliable lock for an office building or school, the Barracuda Door Defense System is extremely heavy duty, offering a high level of protection.

It’s made from steel with a powder-coated finish, and there are several sizes available to fit different door jams. The brace slides underneath the door and its side pieces latch onto the jams, making it virtually impossible to force the door open. It doesn’t require permanent installation, and it can be deployed in a matter of seconds.

The Wundermax Door Stoppers are a light-duty option to provide a little added security to your home or accommodations. These door stoppers are made from odorless rubber, and they can be used on any type of flooring.

They’re available in several pack sizes, ranging from one to six, and if you buy multiple, they include handy clips that let you hook two together to fit in large door gaps. Plus, the stoppers come with stick-on holders, in case you use it on the same door frequently.

Add an Extra Layer of Security With a Portable Door Lock

Feeling safe when you’re at home or traveling can sometimes be difficult. Whether it’s through installing a smart lock in your home, keeping pepper spray readily available or doing a double-check for spy cameras in your rental — feeling secure anywhere you go is important. For those who live in rental properties, knowing that landlords or former tenants could have easy access to your home can create some unease. When staying in rentals or hotels, guests may feel uncomfortable knowing that employees and owners could enter their room at any time. And for those who live with nosy roommates, being able to lock the bedroom door can provide an added feeling of security and help solve arguments over privacy once and for all. That’s why a portable door lock is a great item that can help users feel safe when at home or traveling.

It’s important to note that portable door locks should only be used in legally approved manners. Ensure all the members of your home know how to remove the lock in case of a fire and always use precautions when using a portable door lock.

What Do Portable Door Locks Do?

Portable door locks act as a reinforcement for locking doors and can also be used on doors that don’t have locks, like interior doors. We’ve included styles of portable door locks that can be used from the inside of the home or room as well as portable door locks that can be used on the outside. These locks provide an additional level of security and can act as a deterrent for intruders — whether that’s a busybody roommate or an unscrupulous landlord.

Metal claws are inserted into the strike plate when the door is open. Once the door is closed, the Addalock is installed, making it impossible for those with a key to open the door from the outside. Designed to be used on the inside of a door to slow intruders and keep out people with a key, the Addalock is ideal for use in hotels, college dorms or home rentals when strangers may have access to your door.

Pros: The Addalock comes with a storage pouch for protection when the lock is not in use.

Cons: The Addalock may not work on doors with large deadbolts.

2. travelers security lock.

The Travelers Safety Lock is the most secure option on the list, but also the most expensive. It’s constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum that will stand up to serious pressure. This portable door lock can be installed on right- or left-facing doors and is incredibly easy to install. By redistributing any force applied to the door to the lock and doorframe, this lock provides serious protection from intruders. An included carrying case makes it easy to travel with.

Pros:  Heavy-duty materials provide reliable security while traveling. Easy to install on virtually any door. Protects against keys and forced entry.

Cons : More expensive than other travel locks. Users with mobility issues may have trouble installing this lock.

3. calslock portable door lock for travel.

QUALITY PICK

The Calslock Portable Door Lock for Travel provides peace of mind when home or traveling. The small lock is the size of two pens but provides a sturdy second lock over a deadbolt. The Calslock can be used by hooking the lock into the strike plate and then squeezing and pulling back the slide bar when the door is open. Once the door is closed, users simply squeeze the slide bar and push it against the door. The Calslock works best on doors with a small gap between the frame and the door. Like the Addalock, the Carslock is ideal for use in places where multiple people may have access to your door, including hotels, dorms and rentals.

Pros: The Calslock will provide resistance against intruders pushing in on the door and will create a loud noise that can alert sleeping residents.

Cons: The Calslock only works on doors that swing inwards. The serrated edge makes this lock unsafe for homes where small children can reach the door handle.

4. prime-line door knob lock-out device.

HONORABLE MENTION

Help prevent others from accessing the lock on your doorknob with the Prime-Line Door Knob Lock-Out Device. The lock fits over a round doorknob and uses a key to prevent the turning of the knob and access to the keyhole. The cylinder inside the lock is held in place with an O-ring and can be removed when the device is unlocked and open. The Prime-Line can be installed in seconds and is made with a durable, diecast construction.

Pros: Customers can use the Prime-Line to prevent prying landlords from entering their homes without permission. Because the lock fits over the doorknob, the renter isn’t changing the locks, which is against many rental policies.

Cons: The Prime-Line can only be used on round doorknobs.

If you travel alone and want reassurance of your privacy and security, this lock is an excellent choice.

Pros: Made of hefty materials, portable and easy to use.

Cons: It does not fit all doors, so make sure you read the dimensions before you purchase.

VINCREY Portable Door Lock

7. doorjammer portable door lock brace.

BEST DOOR JAM

This portable door lock from DoorJammer works by jamming the door from underneath as opposed to locking the knob or handle further, so it’s compatible with almost all doors and all types of flooring. You can use it with carpet as well as laminated floors, and it takes only a few seconds to set up. The small neoprene extension foot only needs about 0.3 inches of clearance to work so it’ll work in most spaces, and it can be used with high-threshold doors. It weighs only 8 ounces but forms a powerful barricade to keep you safe.

Pros: Works on nearly all doors and floor types, strong barricade, requires no tools to install and can be easily removed in an emergency.

Cons: If your door has a large gap between the bottom and the floor this lock might not work.

DoorJammer Portable Door Lock Brace

$19.00 $29.99 37% off, 8. emdmak door stop alarm.

This door stopper/alarm from EMDMAK isn’t technically a door lock but it will make it much harder for someone to enter your space and sound an alarm alerting you that someone is intruding. It can be used while traveling just as easily as it can be used at home, and the alarm is 120db, so it’ll scare away anyone who comes in contact with it. The door wedges have three sensitivity levels you can set — high, medium and low, and they’re powered on 9V batteries that can be used for a year under typical circumstances. The installation is super simple, and they can be used on any door with a small gap underneath it.

Pros: Alarm alerts you to the intruder, super easy to install, sensitivity levels are handy, battery lasts for an entire year.

Cons: Not a lock, so it won’t prevent an intruder from getting in if they aren’t scared off by the alarm.

Portable door locks are a great way to add an extra layer of security to your hotel room or Airbnb rental. With the right lock, you can rest easy knowing that your space is secure and protected. Here are some of the best portable door locks on the market. Use these portable door lock reviews to help find a solution that fits your budget and security needs.

What Is A Portable Door Lock?

Why get a portable door lock, addalock portable door lock, urgeeo portable door lock for travel, jian boland door lock, travelers safety lock, safety buckle portable door lock, honesaloc portable door lock, calslock portable door lock for travel, geanli portable door stop, doorjammer portable door brace review, deadbolt strap, permanent reinforcement door locks, add an extra layer of security with these portable door locks for travel.

Portable door locks are an affordable and easy way to protect you and your belongings while traveling. These locks mount easily on the door and can be removed when needed. Portable door locks come in a variety of styles and this article reviews the props and cons of each.

Are portable door locks even necessary? Hotel rooms and Airbnbs already have door locks, right? The issue isn’t the locks themselves, but who might also have access to those locks. I travel a lot for work and never go anywhere with a portable door lock.

Portable Door Locks For Airbnbs

Besides your Airbnb host, who else has access to your temporary living space? Cleaners? Contractors? Neighbors? Maintenance people? HOA staff? Maybe even previous gusts? Do you know how often your Airbnb host changes the passcode for the door?

My former boss got robbed at an Airbnb in Jamaica. In the middle of the night, two guys came into their rental and robbed them while they were sleeping. Not wanting to risk an armed confrontation, my boss pretended to be asleep during the robbery. In addition to his phone and laptop, the thieves also took his passport and wallet.

The robbery only lasted a few mins, but that’s all it took to turn his weak-long vacation turned into a frustrating exercise in replacing travel documents and credit cards. The Jamaican police eventually caught the thieves. It turns out that they were the two boyfriends of the cleaning ladies. They owed money to a local drug dealer and got desperate enough to rob the Airbnb.

NOTE: Don’t forget to double-check for  spy cameras  and hidden peepholes in your Airbnb rentals! Everything from clocks to smoke detectors can have hidden cameras inside!

Portable Door Locks For Hotels

I used to feel a little safer in hotels, but recent experiences have changed my mind. In just the last several months, hotel staff have accidentally given me keycards to occupied hotel rooms… twice!

The first time was at the Aloft in Durham, North Carolina. Luckily no one was in the room at the time. I walked in, saw clothes and suitcases, and quickly left the room and went back to the lobby check-in desk.

The second time, I wasn’t as lucky. The hotel staff at a Holiday Inn Express in New York City gave me a keycard to someone else’s room… and they were still inside! There was a woman in the bathroom wearing nothing but a towel. I quickly ran out of the room and into the stairwell. I didn’t want to risk waiting for the elevator and getting into a fight with an angry husband or boyfriend. Unfortunately my room was on the 21st floor. I walked down a few flights carrying my suitcase and then caught the elevator back down to the lobby. So embarrassing!

Portable Door Locks For Renters

For those who live in rental properties, knowing that landlords or former tenants could have easy access to your home can create some unease. Many renters feel uncomfortable knowing that management companies and owners could enter their homes at any time.

Portable Door Locks For Dorms, Bedrooms, And More

Besides rentals, hotels and Airbnbs, you can use a portable door lock to secure any room. Did you get into a fight with your college roommate? Do you have nosy siblings who like to come into your bedroom? Does a creepy sibling or parent like to watch you sleep? A portable door lock can lock anyone out of a room, even if they have a key.

Types Of Portable Door Locks

Portable door locks can be used to secure any door that opens inwards, including hotel doors, Airbnb rentals, bedrooms, dorm rooms, etc. Mostly made of durable materials, such as brass, steel, and aluminum, there are various types of portable door locks.

Addalock Portable Door Lock

Addalock ‘s clip and chain style door lock ($10 via Amazon) is the most popular type of portable door lock. When you search online, you’ll find dozens of imitators, but Addalock claims to be the “original”.

This style lock is small enough to fit into your pocket and easy enough for anyone to use. It works by placing the metal plate against the deadbolt. You then close the door with the plate in between the door and door frame and attach the plastic clip. Once secured into place, the plastic clip prevents an inward opening door from opening.

  • Pros : Easy Install: No tools are required for installation; Compatibility: You can use this model in most hotels, Airbnbs, schools, rentals, etc.; Portable: This model is lightweight, small, and easily fits into a pocket.
  • Cons : Durability: The plastic can become cracked, especially after repeated forced entry attempts; Deadbolt Size Restrictions: This model works with average door types, but not larger deadbolts or door shapes.
  • Who Should Buy This? Anyone on a budget who wants to use a portable door lock to secure an inward opening door with a deadbolt.

Urgeeo Portable Door Lock For Travel

More durable than similar models that use a plastic clip, the(Amazon link) Urgeeo Portable Door Lock ($15 via Amazon) uses aluminum alloy and stainless steel instead of plastic. Even though the plastic version is more popular, for a few dollars more, it might be worth getting a model made from stronger materials.

You can also use the Urgeeo Portable Door Lock to break glass or as a personal defense weapon.

Urgeeo Portable Door Lock - Personal Defense

  • Pros: Durability: Upgrade door security device made of aluminum alloy and stainless steel material, makes Portable door lock more durable; Multi-Use: The Urgeeo can also be used to break glass or as a brass knuckles-like weapon; Style: It comes in different colors.
  • Cons: Price: The stronger metal materials slightly increase the price of this model.
  • Who Should Buy This? Anyone who likes the clip and chain design but is willing to spend a few more dollars for a metal clip instead of the plastic version.

Jian Boland Door Lock

The biggest advantage of the(Amazon link) Jian Boland Door Lock ($12 via Amazon) , is it doesn’t require a deadbolt. Butterfly style door locks can be used in between the door and the door frame at any part of the door.

These locks work great, but they have a couple potential drawbacks that you need to consider before buying.

If someone tries to forcefully open a door while the butterfly clip is attached, then it can severely dent the door. That’s probably not a concern for a hotel room, but if you plan on using this lock on a home bedroom door, then you might want to try a different model.

Another potential issue is compatibility. To secure a room, the gap between the door and the door frame must be greater than 2mm (if your door does not have a door gap, it may not be suitable for you).

  • Pros: Doesn’t Require A Deadbolt: If you are trying to secure a door that doesn’t have a deadbolt, then you will want to consider this model; Portable: This is one of the smallest portable door locks on the market and only about the size of a small cookie; Very Easy Installation: To install this door lock, just insert it between the door frame and twist.
  • Cons : Damage Potential: Because of their flat metal design, these locks are more likely to cause damage a door during a forced entry attempt. Probably only a concern if you are using this lock in a more permanent situation, like a dorm room or bedroom; Compatibility: Thicker metal design may not fit in between tight door gaps.
  • Who Should Buy This? Anyone who needs to secure an inward opening door that doesn’t have a deadbolt.

Travelers Safety Lock - Portable Door Lock Review

Similar in design to butterfly style door locks, the(Amazon link) Travelers Safety Lock ($99 via Amazon) has softer plastic pads that help prevent damage to the door or door frame. Made from aircraft-grade aluminum, this is the strongest lock on our list.

  • Pros:  Durable: Made from high-grade metal materials; Protective Padding: Intergraded pads help prevent damage to door or door frame.
  • Cons : Expensive: At $99, this lock is 10x more expensive than the average price of the other portable travel locks on this list.
  • Who Should Buy This? If you have serious security concerns, this this is the lock for you. It’s as strong as a permanent door lock.

Safety Buckle Portable Door Lock

Unlike the metal and plastic clip models, the (eBay link) (eBay link) (eBay link) (eBay link)(eBay link) safety buckle door lock ($9 via eBay) only has a single locking piece that lays against the bottom of the deadbolt. This design makes it more compatible with different types of deadbolts.

Another advantage of the safety buckle lock is its compatibility with thicker doors. The buckle is adjustable and can easily be secured in different door thickness settings.

  • Pros: Compatibility: Compatible with all types of deadbolts and thicker doors; Ease Of Use: Buckle design is easy to install; Lightweight: Smaller and thinner than other pocket door lock models.
  • Cons : Durability: Thin metal design isn’t as sturdy as the other items on this list.
  • Who Should Buy This? People with larger deadbolts and/or thicker doors that open inwards.

Honesaloc Portable Door Lock

A hybrid between the safety buckle and plastic clips models is the adjustable button style lock from(Amazon link) HonesaLoc ($11 via Amazon) . Similar to the safety buckle, the adjustable button lock works great with thicker doors.

This model also secures to the deadbolt, like the plastic clip, but it’s much easier to install than the plastic or metal clips style locks.

  • Pros: Easy Install: Fast and easy install only takes seconds; Compatibility: Compatible with thicker doors.
  • Cons: Durability: Plastic material may not hold up over time.
  • Who Should Buy This? Anyone who has a thicker door or thinks the plastic or metal clip style locks are too hard to install. Also requires an inward opening door.

Calslock Portable Door Lock For Travel

The(Amazon link) Calslock Portable Door Lock ($30 via Amazon) has a unique style. At first glance, it looks like a miniature brass chainsaw (it even has a serrated edge). It may look cute, but the Calslock is a sturdy portable door lock that’s also easy to use.

To secure a door using the Calslock, simply hook the lock into the deadbolt’s door plate and squeeze and pull back the slide bar when the door is open. Once the door is closed, squeeze the slide bar and push it against the door, then release.

  • Pros: Metal Materials: The Calslock is made using stainless steel and solid brass. Your door will probably break before this does; One-Piece Design: There are no detachable parts like clips or buckles to lose.
  • Cons: Price: Because this lock is made using brass, it is more expensive that most of the locks on this list; Rough Edges: The Calslock’s sharp jagged edge makes this lock unsuitable for households with young children who are tall enough to access the door handle.
  • Who Should Buy This? Are you worried by the plastic parts or cheaper aluminum metals used in some of the portable locks on this list? If so, you may take comfort in the Calslock’s design and its combination of solid brass and stainless steel materials.

Geanli Portable Door Stop - Door Stop

Portable door locks that either require deadbolts or gaps in the door frame won’t work with all door types. For those situations, you may want to consider using a door stop, like the(Amazon link) Geanli Portable Door Stop ($22 via Amazon) .

Portable Door Jammer For Travel Security, Door Stopper Security Device Lockdown, Aluminum Alloy Anti-Slip Door Locks For Women Safety Self Defense, Apartment Personal Protection For Homeowner

Instead of using the deadbolt to secure your door, a door stop or door jammer uses the pressure of the opening door and the friction from a rubber pad against the floor to keep the door closed.

  • Pros: Easy Install/Removal: It only seconds to install and remove.
  • Cons: Door Gap Compatibility: A 0.19 inch thick gap between the door and the floor is required; Hard Surface Floor Required: This type of door lock won’t work with carpet or dirt floors. This rules out carpeted hotel rooms and areas with dirt floors, like barns.
  • Who Should Buy This? Anyone with a hard surface floor who is also worried about the compatibility of a portable door lock in certain door frames. You will also need an inward opening door that has a small gap between the door and the floor.

The(Amazon link) DoorJammer ($25 via Amazon) is portable door stop made from heavy-duty steel and aluminum. To install, simply place the base plate on the ground and then attach the footplate to the door. This will hold the door shut, making it virtually impossible to open without removing the DoorJammer.

The footplate has adjustable rubber wedges to ensure it fits snugly in all types of door frames, and the device is even height adjustable to ensure it fits any door.

  • Pros: Compact But Strong: It’s smaller than a phone and crafted from tough, lightweight steel so you’ve got a portable door barricade whether home or away.
  • Cons: Floor Surface: Hard floor surface required
  • Who Should Buy This? The DoorJammer is an ideal choice for those seeking a portable door stop lock for a door with a larger gap between the floor and the door.

Deadbolt Strap - Portable Door Locks

The most lightweight portable door lock is the(Amazon link) Deadbolt Strap ($7 for two via Amazon) . This piece of sturdy nylon fabric secures to the deadbolt lock knob and then wraps tightly around the doorknob. It’s easy to install and is about 48 cm (18.9 inch) long by 3.5 cm (1.38 inch) wide.

One of the best things about this model, is its discreetness. If someone was searching through your luggage, they probably wouldn’t even know that this fabric strap was a door lock. It looks more like headband than a security device.

  • Pros: Discreet: Most people wont even know this is a door lock. It looks more like a headband or hair tie; Affordable: These door straps sell for only a few dollars each; Compatibility: Works with any door with a deadbolt knob, including doors that swing in or out; Portability: Deadbolt straps are lightweight, foldable, and small enough to always keep one in your purse or suitcase.
  • Cons: Compatibility: May not be compatible with every door. Requires a deadbolt knob to work.
  • Who Should Buy This? Anyone who is looking for a small and discreet portable door lock that is small enough to keep in their toiletries bag.

Add-on reinforcement locks are an inexpensive way to provide additional security to any home. They offer peace of mind, and can help to keep families safe from intruders.

Defender Security Door Lock

Most hotels have an extra door lock located above the deadbolt that you can flip into place while inside your room. They are great at preventing the cleaning staff from entering your room while you are still inside.

If you like that extra sense of security, then you might want to get the(Amazon link) Defender Security door lock ($20 via Amazon) . Similar to hotel locks, the Defender Security door lock is a reinforcement lock that easily flips into place when you need it. The lock is easy to install and just gets screwed into your door frame. Even if someone has a key to your door, the Defender Security door lock will help prevent someone from entering.

Add An Extra Layer Of Security With A Portable Door Lock

Feeling safe when others have access to your door can be difficult. But for less than $50, you can buy multiple items from this list. If you are looking for a suggestion, we recommend the(Amazon link) Urgeeo Portable Door Lock ($15 via Amazon) , DoorJammer ($25 via Amazon) , and(Amazon link) Deadbolt Strap ($7 for two via Amazon) . This assortment of door locks will keep you secure in a variety of different situations.

Using a portable door lock can quickly add an extra layer of security to any door and help to deter forced entry. It’s a small price to pay for the extra peace-of-mind that a portable door lock provides.

One response

Hello. Your page on portable hotel locks is not very useful, as it features no pictures. What I’m seeking is a kind of portable lock which installs from the OUTSIDE (and requires a key to open), to keep others from entering (e.g., while shopping). The regular locks of this kind install from the INSIDE and WON’T suit my needs.

Portable door locks can give travelers extra comfort and protection. Here’s how to choose one.

As the pandemic eases, the prospect of staying in unfamiliar places has become both exciting and unnerving for many former travel enthusiasts. It’s important to feel safe, especially when it’s time to rest after a packed day of sightseeing or adventuring. One way to add an extra layer of protection against unwanted intrusions is to purchase a portable door lock. Unlike exterior locks that open with a key, portable door locks can be used only inside a room and come in a variety of forms, including keyed contraptions, metal plates, door stoppers and noise alarms.

These devices are marketed to people who want extra security but don’t have control over what kind of locking mechanism is used on a door: apartment renters, dorm dwellers and travelers. Before you purchase one, experts say, you should consider why you want it and what kind will meet your needs.

Reasons to purchase

“There’s a lot of psychology and emotion involved in feeling safe,” says Rebecca Edwards, a security expert with SafeWise , which analyzes national crime and safety trends and reviews related products. The pandemic has made us more proactive about protecting ourselves in general, she says: “We’re already thinking about taking more control over the environment and the threat that it presents to us.”

And if you’ve had a specific experience “that makes you feel worried, or afraid, or more vulnerable, having the extra thing sometimes just helps you relax and get some sleep, Edwards says. People who have experienced a crime or know someone who has “are astronomically more likely to employ extra security measures.”

Higher prices and hard-to-find reservations: What to know about outdoor adventures this summer

Where you stay matters, too. In a large hotel, you probably don’t need a portable door lock because the rooms probably have deadbolts on the inside, says Leyla Giray Alyanak, a journalist and avid explorer who lives in rural eastern France and created a website, Women on the Road, to share tips and resources with other solo female travelers.

Over the years, Alyanak has visited 96 countries and stayed in all types of accommodations, including luxury hotels, secluded Airbnbs and a guesthouse in Tanzania where, due to high rates of neighborhood theft, the owner locked the doors at night and went to sleep with the master key. So far, Alyanak has not used a portable door lock in a major hotel, and she hasn’t experienced a problem.

But hotels are falling out of favor with some travelers because of coronavirus concerns. Even if you’re fully vaccinated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends vacation rentals as a “safer” option than hotels because they pose a lower risk of coming into contact with people outside your household. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is expecting a surge in summer 2021 bookings.

While Airbnbs , Vrbos and other private rental units can feel safer from an infection standpoint, they carry other security risks. These units don’t always have the heavy-duty deadbolts that are standard at most hotels. Also, Airbnbs often employ smart locks linked to a specific code, and you can’t be sure the owner has updated the code between guests, says Derek Kiser, a Houston construction professional who has worked with doors, locks and associated hardware for more than a decade. Kiser established a website called Door Security Group to help consumers understand home security products.

Four seasons, four stunning national parks

Even if a room has secondary locking mechanisms — such as security chains or swinging latches attached to the door and frame — Kiser cautions against relying on them. Because these pieces are held in place only by screws, they’re easy to dislodge with some force if a door is cracked open. And if you’re renting a single room in a house where other guests are coming and going, “you’re definitely going to want more security,” says Kiser.

Although hostels, bed-and- breakfasts, Vrbos and Airbnbs present a higher break-in risk than a large hotel — where in addition to deadbolts, the building might have cameras and other security measures to deter criminals — the chance of an incident is small, Edwards says. The bigger risk is that someone can access your room when you’re not there and steal your valuables. This, too, is relatively rare, but “that kind of crime is far more common than someone coming in to attack you,” Edwards says.

The bottom line, security experts say, is that unless you’re staying in a big hotel, it’s smart to bring along a portable door lock just in case — even if you don’t end up using it. And regardless of your accommodation, packing a lock is a good idea for any international travel. “You’re usually going to be far less familiar with the type of area, and you’re not going to know if you picked a safe part of town or not,” Edwards says. Plus, it may be more difficult to find and purchase a lock once you arrive at your destination.

What to look for

Though portable door lock options are numerous, it’s important to focus on ease of use — both for installation and removal in case of an emergency. Alyanak advises travelers to keep it simple. One low-tech strategy that has worked for her: bringing a plastic doorstop to wedge underneath the door when she turns in for the evening. “They’re light; they don’t weigh anything. You can stick it in a shoe,” she says.

Whatever product you choose, it’s best if it comes in one piece, Kiser says. On his website, he reviews 10 portable door locks . If you’re traveling by plane, he recommends checking that your lock is TSA-compliant and won’t be confiscated if you pack it in carry-on luggage. For instance, door security bars such as the Buddybar Door Jammer are extremely effective against both forcible and unforced entry but probably aren’t allowed in carry-on bags, Kiser says.

A popular option is the Addalock , which is small and, at $17.95, fairly inexpensive. The device recently gained a lot of attention on TikTok as more people worked from home and wanted additional security, inspiring videos such as this one . The Addalock has a steel piece that’s inserted into the door strike, then locked into place with a handle. It takes less than a minute to install, and like a doorstop, it’s easy to uninstall under emergency conditions. Another option is the DoorJammer portable door brace, which is priced at $29.99 and fits underneath the door. It’s extremely secure, Kiser says, though potentially trickier to remove in a hurry.

Some products not only make it more difficult for someone to enter your room from outside but also feature alarms to further discourage intruders. Sabre’s $13.99 Door Stop Alarm emits a 120-decibel noise if it senses pressure from a door opening inward.

One caveat: All of the above options are designed for inward-swinging doors. Securing doors that open toward the outside, such as those in motel rooms, is more challenging. Fortunately, you don’t always need a physical barrier to keep out unwanted visitors. Criminals prefer not to draw attention to themselves, so devices that simply sound alarms if a door is jiggled can be effective deterrents.

These motion-sensor alarms are suitable for both inward- and outward-swinging doors. Because they hang on a knob or handle without restricting door movement, you don’t need to worry about uninstalling them during an emergency. One example is the Sabre Door Handle Alarm , which costs about $10.

Alyanak decided to use a motion sensor alarm in her room after a fellow guest’s shoes were stolen at the backpackers’ hostel where she was staying in South Africa. These devices produce a piercing sound loud enough to wake you, your neighbors and the front desk, too. That’s usually enough to scare off a wrongdoer, says Alyanak, because “the last thing they want is a hotel manager to come by.”

Whatever kind of lock you choose may be less important than simply having one. Packing a portable door lock or alarm can help you feel more prepared and comfortable heading into that long-awaited vacation. “The biggest thing that security measures and locks and extra things do for us is make us feel safe, so that we can let our guard down and relax,” says Edwards. Even if the lock remains tucked away in your suit case for the entire trip, you’ll feel better knowing it’s there if you need it.

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

TSA locks can seem a bit mysterious, but they're the easiest way to add some security to the travel process. There are all kinds of styles, from combination and cable locks to classic key and keyless locks with card access. The best part is that TSA-approved locks are no more expensive than non-approved ones, and they're easy to find.

Like many travel accessories, there are an overwhelming number of TSA-approved locks to choose from. That's where our research comes into play: We dug into the best locks that will keep your personal items where they belong, broken down by type (and you've got plenty of options). Consider how much you are willing to spend, the style that best suits your needs, and any durability claims and reviews.

Must use key to lock

Master Lock’s padlock is designed with front access, which makes locking and unlocking easier on the wrists. The steel shackle gives you all the protection you need against those looking to cut the lock off, and both locks in the set can be opened with the same key (you get two keys in the pack). Another bonus: These locks are available in two colors (purple and blue), making them easier to spot in the mess of packing and unpacking .

Materials: Steel | Type: Key

Best Retractable Cable Lock

Lewis n. clark retractable cable lock.

Bright color for quick recognition

Versatile design

If you don’t want to mess with any additional accessories like keys or extra cables, this retractable design from Lewis N. Clark may be just what you’re looking for. A 30-inch steel cable provides plenty of flexibility for securing multiple pieces of luggage or looping your zipper pulls together. An easy-to-use, three-number combination allows the user to open and close the lock. Reviewers say this option is better for carry-on luggage, as steel shackle styles provide more security when your bag is completely out of sight.

Materials: Steel, thermoplastic rubber, ABS | Type: Combination

If you like to travel light and appreciate products from well-established brands, go for the Master Lock Set Your Own Combination Lock . It's light yet durable and works perfectly for carry-ons, backpacks, or small luggage items . We also like the Anvil 3-Digit Cable Lock for its value and lifetime guarantee.

What to Look for When Buying a TSA-Approved Lock

Luggage locks vary quite a bit in price, but you won’t find many over $20. It depends on the level of security you’re looking for: Steel shackle locks can run a bit more expensive, as do keyless options that require a card to unlock. Beware of super-inexpensive options—paying a few dollars more on your luggage lock can make all the difference.

Most TSA-approved locks are made of steel, an ultra-durable material. Steer clear of locks made entirely of rubber or plastic and locks with cables that are anything but steel.

There are a few common styles of TSA-approved locks: combination locks, cable locks, and keyless locks. Consider your personal preferences when choosing: Do you constantly lose your keys? Stay away from locks that require one to open. Need a bit of flexibility to lock up a bag with small zipper holds? Look for a super-strong cable lock with a thinner cable. Anxious about someone cracking your combination code? Opt for a card-access lock.

Every TSA-approved lock will have a red diamond logo, also known as a Travel Sentry logo. This means it’s compatible with the universal keys that TSA agents have to unlock these approved locks.

Not necessarily. Most cable locks are made with durable steel cables—you’d need a heavy-duty wire cutter to break through. If that still worries you, choose a steel shackled lock instead; just know that they are less flexible in terms of what you can affix them to (larger shackles don’t often work well with smaller zipper pulls).

It’s not illegal to lock your luggage with a non-approved lock, but you are running the risk of a TSA agent cutting your lock off should they need to search your bag. There isn’t often a price difference between TSA-approved and non-approved locks, so you’re always better off going with one that the TSA can access.

Erika Owen is a frequent traveler who doesn’t leave home for a trip without her favorite TSA-approved lock. She also put four hours of research and review analysis into this story and has personally tested several of the brands mentioned in this article including Lewis N. Clark and Master Lock.

travel room lock

If you’ve ever worried about the strength of the locks in your hotel room, you know the benefits a travel lock can bring. In fact, with more people staying in vacation rental homes than ever, portable security locks have gained attention in recent years. You don’t know who has access to your vacation home when you’re staying there, so an extra lock can provide protection against previous guests who still have the keycode.

A secondary lock should be small enough to slide into the pocket of a purse or suitcase without weighing you down or getting in the way. But it should also be sturdy enough to provide the security you need, use after use. Hopefully, you’ll never have to test its strength in a real break-in situation, but you’ll want the security of knowing it will work if necessary.

For best results, look at the materials used to put the security device together. It should be made of heavy-duty materials like steel. Any secondary pieces should easily hold up. Some security locks are built to slide over the strike plate, while others are more of a doorstop, sliding under the bottom of the door to keep it from budging.

With the type of lock that fits over the strike plate, the key is to fit over the existing setup without damaging it. These devices can vary in how they work, but usually, you can put them in place in a matter of seconds. You may need to follow the instructions the first couple of times but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it’s easy.

Before you buy a portable door lock, check the door specifications. Many of them only work with a door that opens inward. These locks are designed for hinged doors, too. If you have a sliding door, you’ll need a different kind of security lock.

What to Look For

  • If you’re buying a portable door lock for use in vacation homes and hotel rooms, make sure the design won’t damage the door.
  • Although you can easily tuck your portable door lock into a pocket, having a storage pouch can be useful. If your lock doesn’t come with one, consider purchasing one separately.
  • With some portable door locks, the red handle is everything. This is the piece that blocks the door when someone tries to open it. Look for a handle that’s thick and solid and can withstand great force.
  • Some portable door locks come with a built-in alarm. If someone tries to open the door, the alarm makes an ear-piercing noise. It’s not connected to emergency personnel, but it could be enough to scare someone away.
  • Before you slide the lock into place, look carefully at any instructions. Some will let you test it before you install it.
  • You may want to test the lock to make sure it’s secure after it’s installed. Have someone stand outside the door and try to open it.
  • Although portable door locks are great for traveling, if you’re looking for something for a longer-term residence, like an apartment or dorm room, it might be worth investing in a deadbolt lock. If one isn’t provided, check with your landlord or dorm advisor to ask if it’s okay to install such a thing.
  • How the device behaves when it’s removed is important, as well. You’ll want a lock that doesn’t break into multiple pieces as soon as you extract it from the door.
  • For hotel rooms, doorstop-style locks work well. They can handle a wide range of door stops and will easily store in your luggage or carry-on bag.
  • Try to avoid leaving valuables in your rental house or hotel room when you’re out. You won’t have your extra security lock to protect everything. You may want to use the hotel room’s safe or bring your own if you’re staying in a rental house.

More to Explore

A lock is just one safety measure you can take when vacationing. If you’re staying in a hotel, you can also put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door when you leave the room. This will give the impression someone’s inside. You may also want to close blinds and curtains if it’s possible someone outside can see in.

If a stranger knocks on your door, you should always use caution. If you aren’t expecting someone, don’t open the door, even if the person claims to be an employee. When in doubt, pick up the phone and call the front desk to verify the employee’s identity.

Travel & Leisure / Kevin Liang

Ensuring your personal safety and well-being is just as important as making memories and enjoying la dolce vita while traveling (if not more so). Luckily, staying safe while abroad or on a trip across the country doesn’t take much to get right. Simply come prepared with a few travel-focused safety products to give you peace of mind while you’re on the move.

We’ve rounded up some of the best safety products available, including those which we personally use. We especially love the Birdie Personal Safety Alarm, Monsin Door Stop Alarm, and Raytix RFID Money Belt, which can all help you stay safe in any situation you might encounter while traveling.

Best Door Wedge

Monsin door stop alarm.

This door stop doesn’t just block unwanted visitors — it actually includes a built-in alarm that will sound if someone tries to tamper with your hotel room door.

This alarm is very sensitive and could go off if room service or housekeeping staff attempt to enter your room.

It can be hard to fall asleep in a strange hotel room — even if it’s a plush five-star property. Whether you’re traveling solo or have a travel buddy sharing your room, the Monsin Door Stop Alarm is a great option for giving you peace of mind while you’re sleeping. Just wedge it into the closed hotel room door and it’ll keep unwanted visitors out by acting as a powerful doorstop. This option also comes with a built-in alarm that will ring if anyone tries to tamper with or open your door.

Best Secondary Door Lock

Winonly travel door lock for hotel rooms.

This budget-friendly door-locking system adds another layer of security to your hotel room and is pretty simple to set up.

This option might not fit very well on doors that have weatherproofing or other large seams along the doorframe.

The Winonly Travel Door Lock for Hotel Rooms is a great safety alternative for travelers who don’t want an alarm triggered when hotel staff enter the room for cleaning or turn-down services. Use this portable door lock by attaching it to the hole on the door jam, then inserting the red handle into the lock-in-place. It’s quick and efficient to use and install, and can also be easily removed in the dark for emergencies that require quick evacuation.

Best Personal Alarm

Birdie personal safety alarm.

This personal safety alarm is small, subtle, and can easily be slipped into your pocket or handbag.

Some reviewers note that this alarm should be louder and more offensive, especially for those traveling in big cities.

You never know when a personal safety alarm will come in handy — even in your own hometown or city. This alarm will immediately draw attention to you if your personal safety is threatened, if you encounter a pickpocket, or find yourself in any other unsavory situation.

This small device looks more like a USB drive than a personal safety alarm, and it fits conveniently into your pocket or handbag so you can keep it on you at all times. The compact alarm system sounds when you remove the top pin. To turn it off, just slide the pin back into place.

Best Motion Detector

Crevant portable mini motion detector alarm.

This compact motion detector is ultra-lightweight and small, so it’s easy to slip into a suitcase or carry-on bag.

The instructions aren’t very clear which makes the initial setup a bit difficult.

This small but mighty portable miniature motion detector alarm is a great alternative (or add-on) to a door wedge or door alarm. The compact safety product is extremely quick to trigger the alarm if it senses movement in the direction it's pointed — making it a great option for larger hotel rooms or suites where you don’t have your eye on the entrance at all times. Make sure to keep the “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door so you don’t set off a false alarm when housekeeping or other hotel staff attempt to enter your room.

Best Retractable Cable Lock

Lewis n clark triple security lock.

This cable lock offers extra strong, triple-security material that ensures it can’t be cut through or tampered with.

The lock itself can sometimes be finicky and may take a few minutes to get open.

Travel safety products range beyond personal safety items — to ensure a safe trip, you’ll also need to think about keeping your belongings secure while en route, and when you’re out and about. That’s where the Lewis N Clark Triple Security Lock comes in. This extra-strength lock can prevent thieves from getting into your handbag or backpack. It’s also TSA-approved, which means you can use it on your checked luggage without worrying about having it cut off or confiscated while in transit.

Best Luggage Tracker

Eufy smarttrack link.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

This subtle and compact tracker can easily be thrown in your handbag, backpack, or suitcase.

It is only compatible with Apple devices.

Most frequent flyers will tell you to buy a luggage tracker immediately if you plan on checking your luggage or taking a large carry-on on the plane with you. Adding the Eufy SmartTrack Link to your suitcase will allow you to easily track your belongings at all times. So if you do end up losing your luggage while in transit, you can pinpoint where it is — which can actually help the airline crew to expedite the process of getting your luggage back to you. We found the Eufy SmartTrack Link to be easy to use with Apple's Find My app, so you don't waste time learning a new system or downloading additional apps.

Best Portable Safe

Pacsafe travelsafe portable safe.

This portable safe isn’t imposing or heavy like a traditional metal safe — but it’ll keep your valuables just as secure while on the move.

The slim shape and flat bottom make it difficult to fit items like laptops or cameras.

Keeping your gear secure while at the beach can be a challenge — especially for solo travelers who don’t have someone with them to watch their stuff while they take a dip in the water or grab a drink at the pool bar. That’s where the Pacsafe Travelsafe Gii 5 Liter Portable Safe comes in. This unique portable safe isn’t a traditional metal security box — instead it’s lightweight and easily portable for travel. Another key feature is that it can easily be locked to a tree or a pool chair, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to make a stealthy getaway with your belongings.

Best Money Belt

Raytix rfid money belt.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

This money belt fits beneath your clothing without looking bulky or obvious.

The small inside pocket is in the corner of the bag, so it's difficult to actually fit items inside.

If you’re more comfortable keeping your valuables hidden away in a discreet money belt than in a backpack or handbag, then you should absolutely consider the Raytix RFID Money Belt. When tested, we found it especially useful for carrying large amounts of cash or for storing passports on you for long periods of time.

This budget-friendly money belt is ultra-slim, discreet, and features RFID-blocking technology to ensure your cards stay safe from potential thieves. Plus, the two front pockets help keep you organized to access all items easily and quickly.

Best Anti-theft Backpack

Sherpani esprit at.

  • Capacity 3 /5

This backpack features a slash-resistant bottom, zippers that clasp together, and can be worn on your back or front.

The small front pocket is a bit too small for most smart phones.

This anti-theft crossbody backpack is a stylish yet functional option for any adventure. It can easily be worn on your front or back and the shoulder strap is secured with a clip, so you don't need to lift it over your head to put on or take off. It is made from recycled materials and features a slash-resistant bottom, plus other safety features like RFID protection, locking zippers, and a wire-loop chair lock.

This bag is also the perfect size for day trips and features plenty of pockets, including an exterior water bottle pocket and shoulder strap pocket to keep small essentials easily accessible. With seven fun colors and patterns to choose from, the Sherpani Espirit offers something for everyone trying to stay safe on the go.

Best Hidden Stash Spot

Lokistashed 3-pack velvet hair tie scrunchies.

This hidden stash spot doubles as a functional (and stylish) hair scrunchie.

The zipper isn’t easy to hide and is noticeable on the lighter colorways.

Looking for a spot to safely stash a handful of cash without having to bring along your wallet or handbag? LokiStashed 3-pack Velvet Hair Tie Scrunchies are among our personal favorite options when it comes to discreet storage on the go. These velvet scrunchies function the exact same way a regular scrunchie does — but you can easily store at least a few folded-up bills inside without drawing any attention. It’s great for traveling in busy cities, and is a convenient choice if you’re heading out the door at home and don’t want to be weighed down with a handbag.

Best Fake Wedding Band

Thunderfit women breathable air grooves silicone wedding ring.

This affordable and comfortable silicone wedding band will send the desired message without attracting thieves or appearing overly flashy.

These wedding bands run large so you might want to size down at least a full ring size in order to ensure a proper fit.

Depending on where in the world you’re traveling , you may experience unwanted attention — especially if you’re a solo female traveler. If you’re worried about finding yourself in a situation where you feel harassed or unsafe, then wearing a fake wedding band might be a smart idea.

The ThunderFit Women Breathable Air Grooves Silicone Wedding Ring is a great option for this purpose. It isn’t flashy like a diamond engagement ring, so it won’t attract attention from potential thieves, but it’ll still send the right message to those who might otherwise be difficult to shrug off. These rings are waterproof and breathable, so you won’t have to worry about developing an unsightly green line across your finger, either.

  • Quality 4 /5

This kit includes everything you need in a pinch.

We love a wallet that's large enough to safely store your passport and this Melsbrinna case is the perfect, safe-yet-stylish option that even includes RFID-blocking technology. Your passport sits on one side of this wallet and the other side features four slots for your credit cards, ID, transit cards, and more. Best Reflective Layer

Rei co-op active pursuits cycling jacket.

It's light, wind-resistant, and water-repellent, so it will keep you comfortable in any weather.

The hood may not fit over all bike helmets.

For a reflective layer that will guarantee you're seen whether hiking, walking, cycling, or running, this REI jacket in men's and women's sizes is the perfect choice. Without touching your phone, the Flare Bracelet can alert your friends and/or emergency services of possible danger.

It is not yet compatible with Androids.

When traveling solo or to a new location, this bracelet helps keep you connected and safe. Hold the hidden button down to text your location to your friends, press the button once to get a pre-recorded phone call to offer you an excuse to leave a situation, or press and hold the button for three seconds to send your location to emergency services.

The bracelet works even when you're up to ten feet away from your phone and the battery lasts a full year, so you don't have to worry about charging the device. It can also be used internationally as long as you have Wi-fi or cell services in your location.

Best Drink Tester

Philmedi gcheck date rape drug test sticker.

It's designed so you can stick it on the back of your phone for discreet and handy use wherever you go.

These discreet stickers test for GHB in less than one minute, so you can protect yourself quickly and effectively. They're conveniently designed to be attached to your phone, wallet, or other item you always carry with a micro-film on the outside to be removed if and when you want to test your drink. Tips for Buying Travel Safety Products

Consider every step of your journey.

You’ll want to think about the potential risks you’ll be taking throughout your trip, from getting there to exploring your destination, and while staying at your hotel or Airbnb. Travel safety products range significantly from items focusing on solo female travelers’ personal safety to items that protect against theft. Think about where you’re going and what makes the most sense for the destination or type of travel you have in mind, and go from there.

Pick the best way and place to secure valuables

This is something to think about before embarking on your adventure — not just to avoid potential theft, but also to make sure you don’t accidentally misplace anything. You’ll want to know where your valuables are at all times, whether they be jewelry, cash and credit cards, or your passport. Keeping your belongings in a personal safe or money belt while traveling can help give you peace of mind while also keeping you organized.

If you're headed to the airport, chances are you've packed a few valuable items in your carry-on or checked bag. With luggage tampering and theft becoming increasing concerns, investing in a reliable TSA-approved luggage lock can ensure that those items stay safe. The best TSA-approved luggage locks are built to deter would-be thieves and have the ability to be opened by TSA agents for routine inspections without damaging the lock, and therefore, your suitcase.

The best TSA-approved luggage locks are built to deter would-be thieves and have the ability to be ... [+] opened by TSA agents for routine inspections without damaging the lock, and therefore, your suitcase.

To open a TSA-approved luggage lock, TSA agents use a universal master key or combination to open your bag in front of you. Despite this special access feature, TSA-approved locks still provide security for your luggage. These locks are made from sturdy materials such as hardened steel or zinc alloy, both of which offer durability and resistance. Below, we've scoured the internet to find the best TSA-approved luggage locks currently available to help you keep your belongings safe while traveling.

  • Best TSA-Approved Luggage Lock Overall: Master Lock Padlock
  • Best Value TSA-Approved Luggage Lock: Forge TSA Luggage Combination Lock
  • Best TSA-Approved Cable Luggage Lock: Airbolt Smart Lock
  • Best TSA-Approved Luggage Lock For Families: Anvil TSA 4 Digit Locks
  • Best TSA-Approved Card-Operated Luggage Lock: Talonport Sport Keyless TSA-Approved Luggage Lock
  • Best Durable TSA-Approved Luggage Lock: Tumi Luggage Lock
  • Best TSA-Approved Traditional Key Luggage Lock: Forge Dimple Key Luggage Lock
  • Best TSA-Approved Extra Long Luggage Lock: Lewis N. Clark Cable Luggage Lock

Best TSA-Approved Luggage Lock Overall

A durable option that is built to last.

Master Lock

Master Lock Lockdown Triple Security Lock

Dimensions: 0.55 x 1.57 x 4.16 inches | Weight: ‎0.21 ounces | Type of lock: Combination

There’s a reason that Master Lock has been around for more than 100 years—their products are just that good. Made with heavy-duty steel, this straightforward lock is easy to use and hard to break into. We appreciate that it comes in two different styles—word combination and numeric combination—so you can choose what works best for you (though perhaps don’t choose the word “lock”—it’s just too easy).

This lock also comes in handy if you travel with a suitcase or equipment box (such as a Pelican or Nanuk case) that requires a lock with an extended shackle—the shackle length is just shy of two inches, roughly twice the size of standard TSA-accepted locks. The Master Lock Padlock comes in single packs or sets of two.

Best Value TSA-Approved Luggage Lock

Affordable and available in fun colors, forge luggage lock.

Dimensions: 5.5 x 3.9 x 1.5 inches | Weight: ‎‎2.4 ounces | Type of lock: Combination

Made with a zinc alloy body, hardened steel shackles and a patented international locking mechanism, Forge Luggage Locks can take a beating (which the brand backs up with a lifetime warranty). The best part? They average just $6 a piece, meaning your long-lasting option also comes at a great value.

While there is no shortage of TSA-approved locks on the market, many of them become disabled when TSA opens them. However, to remove their key from a Forge lock, the TSA agent will need to re-lock it. You'll know that your bag was searched because the locks feature a handy red indicator that will pop up when a TSA agent uses a master key to open it. Users can set their own three-digit combination, and Forge locks come in two-, four- and six-packs, which are offered in a variety of eye-popping colors.

Best TSA-Approved Cable Luggage Lock

Doesn't require keys or combinations, airbolt smart lock.

Dimensions: 2.16 x 2.16 x 0.62 inches | Weight: 2.11 ounces | Type of lock: Wireless

Airbolt's Smart Lock is another solid option that doesn't require keys or combinations—as long as you have your smartphone, you'll be able to open your bag. To use it, you'll need to start by downloading the app, creating an account and pairing the device via Bluetooth. From the app, simply select "lock" and "unlock" to secure your bag. The app has many additional features, including the ability to share access with a friend or family member and get notifications whenever your lock is opened. It also functions as a tracker, which may give you additional peace of mind while on the go.

The Airbolt Smart Lock is made with durable die-cast zinc and a long braided cable, so it can easily be stretched between zippers, and at roughly 2.2 inches wide, it is small enough to fit in a pocket. One thing to keep in mind is that this lock needs to be charged with a micro-USB to use, which may pose problems if you forget to charge it for a while.

Best TSA-Approved Luggage Lock For Families

Easy for all ages to use, anvil tsa-approved luggage lock.

Dimensions: 2.68 x 1.2 x 0.78 inches | Type of lock: Combination

What makes Anvil's TSA-approved luggage locks ideal for families traveling together is how simple they are to use. Not only are the dials silky smooth, but the numbers are large and easy to read thanks to the contrast of the white digits on a black background.

Each allows users to set their own combination (and change it later, if they prefer), so families can pick something everyone will remember, such as their house number or someone's birthday. The locks are made with a zinc alloy body and have a lifetime warranty. Currently, they're offered as single locks, as well as two-, four- and six-packs, and come in black, purple, orange and yellow (or a variety pack of each).

Best TSA-Approved Card-Operated Luggage Lock

Just a swipe to open, talonport keyless locks.

Weight: 5.3 ounces | Type of lock: Card-operated

Talonport Keyless Locks don’t require users to remember a combination, nor will you have to worry about hanging onto tiny keys (which are also easier to pick or make an unauthorized copy of). Instead, the pack comes with two key cards (one wallet-sized and one meant to affix to a key ring) that open the lock—all you have to do is insert one of the key cards into the side.

The two- and four-packs are a great option for couples and families (or even people who travel with a lot of luggage) because all the locks use the same cards—as long as one person has a key card, they can open all the locks. Should you ever lose or damage your key cards, Talonport will send you a free replacement as long as you register the product beforehand. The same goes if the TSA ever cuts your lock—though considering it's made with a thick, solid metal shackle, they'd likely have a hard time breaking it off.

Best Durable Luggage Lock

Heavy duty and secure, tumi luggage lock.

Dimensions:  3.6 x 5.5 x 0.9 inches | Weight: 4.8 ounces | Type of lock: Combination

Tumi is virtually synonymous with durable travel gear (case in point: we've also rated one of their aluminum suitcases as the best travel trunks ), so it makes sense that their luggage locks are incredibly rugged. These locks feature an all-metal construction, a three-digit combination and an indicator that will let you know if the TSA did, in fact, open your bag. From an aesthetics standpoint, the locks are very sleek and modern and the pack of three comes in silver, black and ruby red finishes.

It's worth noting that these locks are a bit heavier than other locks on the list at 0.33 pounds, which may be a turn-off for travelers conscious of the weight of their bags.

TSA offers spring break preview and travel tips for passengers departing Fresno Yosemite International Airport

travel room lock

FRESNO, California – With the start of the spring break travel season, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates a busy spring break travel season for travelers departing Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT).

Nationally, the spring break travel season began on Thursday, March 7 and will continue through Monday, March 25. During this time, TSA projects it will screen more than 47.7 million travelers through security checkpoints at airports across the country. This is a 6% increase over the 2023 spring break travel period.

Locally, the peak spring break travel period coincides with the schedules of the major local unified school districts as well as the semester break at Fresno State University when classes are not held. This year, the travel rush begins Friday, March 22 and extends through Sunday, April 7. During this time, TSA expects to screen more than 59,500 departing travelers through the security checkpoint at FAT. This is a 9.2% increase over last year’s spring break travel period at FAT.

The busiest days of the week for security operations at FAT are Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The busiest times at the security checkpoint are 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight. The projected busiest days this spring break period will be Friday, March 22; Thursday, March 28 and Sunday, March 31.

The security checkpoint at FAT is open 24 hours a day. Due to several flights departing early in the morning, travelers can expect to encounter large numbers of people who need to be screened first thing in the morning. However, travelers can expect to see a steady flow of travelers at the security checkpoints throughout the day.

With ongoing construction in the security checkpoint, as part of the terminal expansion project, screening capacity is temporarily reduced. However, TSA will continue to staff all available lanes during peak times to ensure security operations remains efficient and convenient for travelers.

TSA strives to get travelers through the general security screening process in less than 30 minutes and through TSA PreCheck® screening in less than 10 minutes. Ninety-nine percent of TSA PreCheck passengers nationwide waited less than five minutes to be screened. Another advantage of TSA PreCheck is children 17 and under are eligible to be screened with a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian on the same itinerary.

Security technologies in use at FAT TSA is using Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) to assist in the travel document checking process at FAT. CAT units are designed to scan a traveler’s photo identification, confirm the traveler’s identity, and verify that the traveler is ticketed for travel that day. CAT also displays the pre-screening status (such as TSA PreCheck) the traveler is eligible for, all without the traveler presenting a boarding pass to the TSA officer.

The use of CAT improves a TSA officer’s ability to accurately authenticate a traveler’s identification while addressing the vulnerabilities associated with photo identification and boarding pass fraud. CAT also provides enhanced fraudulent document detection capabilities.

TSA is also using computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanners to screen travelers’ carry-on luggage in the security checkpoints. This type of scanner provides advanced explosives detection capabilities by applying a sophisticated algorithm to generate a 3-D image of the contents of the carry-on bag. A security screening officer can manipulate the 3-D X-ray image on-screen to allow for a better view of the bag’s contents, ultimately reducing the number of bag checks that are required.

When a carry-on bag is screened through a CT scanner, travelers can leave everything in their carry-on bag, including electronics and travel-size liquids. Another requirement of the CT scanner system is every carry-on item must be placed in a bin for screening.

Travel advice TSA continues to ask travelers to arrive early and prepared for the screening experience to allow for timely completion of every step of the travel process. To help things go smoothly, please follow these tips:

#1: Pack smart. Prepare for security when packing and ensure that there are no prohibited items in carry-on luggage. Bringing prohibited items to the security checkpoint will result in a bag check, slowing the screening process for you and all travelers behind you.

#2: Empty your pockets prior to arriving in the checkpoint.  Place wallets, phones, keys and coins from your pockets inside your carry-on bag instead of placing them in a bin. This will ensure personal items are not left behind.

#3: Know the rules for traveling with liquids TSA defines a liquid as anything that can be spread, spilled, pumped or poured. If the quantity of that item exceeds 3.4 ounces (which is 100 ml), pack it in a checked bag. Any liquid over this size will result in a bag check, slowing the line for everyone. Bring an empty water bottle thru the security checkpoint so you can fill it post-security.

#4: Listen for guidance from TSA officers. Some people may not have traveled recently, so it is important to listen to the direction provided in the security checkpoint. TSA officers provide guidance on security technologies in use at FAT. Listen up for a more streamlined and convenient passenger experience!

#5. Text TSA. TSA now offers assistance via text message to travelers who have with questions about security screening via text message. From any mobile device, a travel can text their request to “AskTSA” (275-872). A virtual assistant is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more complicated questions, AskTSA staff are available daily for live assistance from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. PDT. Passengers may still reach out to @AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger with questions and comments.

# 6: Download the free myTSA app. The myTSA app is a trusted source for last-minute travel questions, providing travelers with 24-hour access to the most frequently requested airport security information. It also features a searchable “Can I Bring” database where you can enter the name of an item and find out if you should pack it in your checked or carry-on bag. The app is available from the App Store or Google Play.

New York Giants 2024 free agency tracker: Stoll, Manhertz add depth to TE room

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - DECEMBER 03: Jack Stoll #89 of the Philadelphia Eagles runs onto the field during player introductions before an NFL football game against the San Francisco 49ers at Lincoln Financial Field on December 3, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Ryan Kang/Getty Images)

This is a running analysis of the New York Giants’ moves and key departures during free agency. The legal tampering window begins Monday at noon ET and the NFL ’s new league year, when teams can formally sign free agents who played elsewhere in 2023, begins Wednesday.

The Giants entered free agency with about $38.4 million in cap space, the 15th-most in the league, and plenty of work to do.

Live updates:   Free-agent news from across the NFL Best available players:   Who’s still on the market? Free agency grades:  The Athletic ’s Mike Jones grades all the signings Does free agency work?:  Best and worst signings of the last four years

OL Aaron Stinnie and Austin Schlottmann

March 15 : As the Giants’ free agency focus shifts to low-cost options, they signed a pair of veteran offensive linemen on Friday. The Giants signed 30-year-old Aaron Stinnie, who started 11 games at left guard for the Buccaneers last season, and 28-year-old Austin Schlottmann, who has been a backup at all three interior offensive line positions during his five seasons with the Vikings and Broncos .

The Giants need to fortify their offensive line depth, especially after Ben Bredeson , who started 16 games at all three interior positions last season, left to sign with the Bucs on Friday. The Giants signed Jon Runyan to a three-year, $30 million contract, so he’ll start at one guard spot. John Michael-Schmitz, who was a second-round pick last year, returns at center. That leaves one starting guard spot open, so Stinnie and Schlottmann will enter the competition for that role.

TE: Chris Manhertz

March 15 : The Giants keep adding to their tight end room, signing Chris Manhertz, his agent Sean Stellato confirmed to The Athletic on Friday .

The Giants also added former Eagles tight end Jack Stoll this week as veteran Darren Waller contemplates retirement. The room also features Daniel Bellinger .

Manhertz went undrafted in 2015 and has played for four teams over his career, most recently spending 2023 with the Denver Broncos. He has a career 26 receptions for 271 yards and two touchdowns. The soon to be 32-year-old is noted for his blocking skills.

I wouldn’t read into anything with Waller based on these signings. The three tight ends they’ve signed this week have combined for 65 catches and 643 yards in their careers. Waller wasn’t far off from those numbers in 12 games last season https://t.co/W6kK6qIs46 — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 15, 2024

TE Jack Stoll

March 14 : The Giants agreed to a one-year deal with former Eagles tight end Jack Stoll, ESPN reported Thursday. The move comes amid some uncertainty in the Giants’ tight end room with Darren Waller uncertain if he will retire or continue his career.

Either way, the Giants needed to add some depth to the roster.

The Giants already have tight end Daniel Bellinger buy beyond him, little is certain. Stoll went undrafted out of Nebraska in 2021 and spent three seasons with the Eagles. He’s started 26 times in 50 appearances with 20 receptions for 183 yards.

Giants needed to add depth at TE. Stoll has been Philly's No. 2 TE the past three seasons. Only 20 career catches, more of a blocker, which the Giants need at TE https://t.co/Qx034VQRhw — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 15, 2024

WR Isaiah Hodgins

March 13: Wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins will hit the open market after not being tendered as a restricted free agent. Hodgins joined the Giants midway through the 2022 season, providing steady production, particularly in the red zone.

The 25-year-old recorded just 21 catches for 230 yards last season, however, as the Giants started to deploy Darius Slayton , Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt as their top three receivers late last year. This is also considered a high quality draft for wide receivers, meaning the Giants could use their No. 6 selection on a top option or elect to pick one deeper in the draft.

CB Nick McCloud

March 13: The Giants tendered cornerback Nick McCloud. The team is short on cornerbacks with veteran Adoree’ Jackson a free agent and not expected to return. McCloud is a versatile 25-year-old who’s been good on special teams. He’ll add depth to the corner spot as well with Deonte Banks , who is coming off a solid rookie season, the CB 1 for now. McCloud was undrafted in the 2021 draft but spent time with the Bengals and Bills before landing in New York in 2022.

WR/KR Isaiah McKenzie

The Giants are determined to avoid another returner debacle. Last season, the Giants tried to shoehorn rookie running back Eric Gray into the return role, and it was a disaster. Gray had two fumbles and was shaky fielding numerous punts before losing the job midway through the season. In 2022, the Giants used No. 1 cornerback Adoree’ Jackson as a punt returner for one game and he promptly suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for seven games.

The Giants added Gunner Olszewski midway through last season and he thrived as the returner in the final 10 games. Olszewski agreed to a deal Monday and the Giants reached a deal with Isaiah McKenzie on Tuesday to add more depth at the position.

McKenzie is a familiar face, as he spent four seasons in Buffalo with general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll. McKenzie has averaged 8.9 yards on 81 punts returns in his seven-year career.

McKenzie and Olszewski fill the same role as a backup slot receiver and returner, so they’ll likely battle for one roster spot. Having two capable returners is two more than the Giants had for most of the past two seasons.

S Jalen Mills

March 12: After losing safety Xavier McKinney on Monday to a mega deal with the Green Bay Packers , the Giants added a new veteran defensive back, agreeing to a one-year deal with safety Jalen Mills, per The Athletic’s Jeff Howe. The 29-year-old Mills was drafted by the Eagles in 2016 and played five seasons for Philadelphia — where he was nicknamed the “Green Goblin” for his bright green-dyed hair — before moving on to New England for the past three seasons.

Mills started his career as an outside corner but has become a versatile secondary component. The Giants need the boost with McKinney’s departure. Only Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock have started consistently while Gervarrius Owens is coming off a quiet rookie year. The Giants corner situation is also in flux with veteran Adoree’ Jackson a free agent. Deonte Banks, the franchise’s first-round selection last year, has proven a capable starter but the Giants still need a veteran opposite him.

DT A’Shawn Robinson

March 12: A’Shawn Robinson earned himself a payday after spending the 2023 season with the Giants on a one-year, $5 million prove-it deal. Now he is cashing in with a three-year, $22.5 million deal with the Carolina Panthers , a league source confirmed to The Athletic.

Robinson will reunite with Panthers DC Ejiro Evero, who was with the defensive tackle previously in Los Angeles. After a handful of starts with the Giants, the soon to be 29-year-old Robinson’s role increased dramatically following the Leonard Williams trade. He was a starter the remainder of the year and finished with 34 solo tackles along with nine pressures and nine QB hurries in 17 games, per TrueMedia.

Robinson was drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft by the Detroit Lions before being signed by the Rams in 2020.

QB Drew Lock

March 12 : GM Joe Schoen made no secret of his plan to add a quarterback this offseason and he followed through by agreeing to sign Drew Lock  to a one-year contract worth $5 million, a league source confirmed to  The Athletic on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Lock has made 23 career starts, providing an experienced insurance policy for starting quarterback  Daniel Jones , who is recovering from a torn ACL. He spent the past two seasons as Geno Smith’s backup in Seattle. Lock didn’t play a snap in 2022, but he made four appearances last season. He led a touchdown drive against the Giants in place of Smith during the Seahawks’  24-3 win in Week 4 and orchestrated a dramatic win against the  Eagles  in Week 15.

Lock is a gunslinger, tying for second in average air yards per attempt in his last season as a starter in 2020 for the  Broncos . He has 28 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions in his career, which illustrates his willingness to take risks.

QB Tyrod Taylor

March 11: Tyrod Taylor is leaving the Giants, but he isn’t going far. After backing up Daniel Jones for the past two seasons, Taylor is switching locker rooms at MetLife Stadium to back-up Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers , a league source confirmed to The Athletic.

The Giants were interested in re-signing Taylor, who played well in five starts last season. Terms of the deal with Jets haven’t been reported, but it’s not surprising Taylor chose to leave the Giants. The veteran wasn’t happy when he didn’t immediately reclaim the starting job from undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito after missing four games with broken ribs. The Giants will be in the market for an experienced backup QB as Jones recovers from a torn ACL.

OT Jermain Eluemunor

March 11: The Giants continued to beef up their offensive line on Monday. Not long after signing Jon Runyan, the team agreed to a two-year $14 million contract with tackle Jermaine Eluemunor . Eluemunor, who was No. 16 on  The Athletic’ s list of the top 150 available free agents , started 31 games over the past two seasons at both tackle spots for the  Raiders . It was vital for the Giants to add an alternative to  Evan Neal , who has struggled at right tackle since being drafted with the seventh pick in 2022.

EDGE Brian Burns

March 13: After being traded to the Giants, edge Brian Burns told members of the media Wednesday, it’s still a little “surreal.”

Burns landed in New York after a blockbuster agreement sent the No. 39 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange. The Panthers will also have an additional fifth-round pick swap.

“I’m kind of overtaken with a lot of emotions,” the 25-year-old Burns told reporters Wednesday after the deal became official with the start of the new league year. “But once I’m done processing — I’m super excited to be here — but once I’m done processing, then everything will come back down, and I’ll really sit in fruition. Right now, I’m kind of all over the place, I’m just a little giddy.”

New #Giant Brian Burns: “I’m just super excited to be a Giant” Mentions the young pieces like Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux as what intrigued him about NY pic.twitter.com/I0rfNaWokZ — Charlotte Carroll (@charlottecrrll) March 13, 2024

March 11: The Giants landed an impact pass rusher in a blockbuster trade Monday. New York sent Carolina its second-round pick (No. 39 pick) and a 2025 fifth-round pick for star edge rusher Brian Burns , league sources told The Athletic . The deal also included a 2024 fifth-round pick swap.

The Giants then handed Burns, who had been franchise-tagged by the Panthers, a five-year contract worth up to $150 million.

Brian Burns full contract details, per source: 5 years, $141M with $87.5M guaranteed. Guarantees: $25M signing bonus, 2024 base salary ($18M), 2025 base salary (22.25M). His $22.25M base salary in 2026 is guaranteed for injury at signing; $10.75M of the 2025 salary is fully… — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 12, 2024

The Giants are giving up basically what they got for defensive lineman Leonard Williams in his trade to Seattle last season. In that deal, they picked up a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The Giants still have a 2024 second-round pick from the Williams trade (No. 47).

Burns, who will be 26 years old in April, has been a stalwart for the Panthers since he was drafted by the franchise in 2019 with the No. 16 pick. Over 80 games in five seasons, Burns has recorded 46 sacks, including a career-high 12.5 in 2022. He earned Pro Bowl nominations in 2021 and 2022. He will form a fearsome tandem with fellow pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and should give the Giants pass rush a lot of juice with All-Pro Dexter Lawrence wreaking havoc up the middle.

RB Devin Singletary

March 11:  After losing star running back Saquon Barkley to the Eagles earlier in the day, the Giants found his replacement by agreeing to sign the former Bills and Texans running back to a three-year $16.5 million deal . Singletary is coming off a career season in Houston, rushing for 898 yards on 216 attempts (4.2 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. He also caught 30 passes for 193 yards.

NFL free-agency takeaways: What to make of the Day 1 run on running backs

Singletary has been remarkably durable for a player at his position, playing in either 16 or 17 games in each of the past four seasons. He spent the first four seasons of his career in Buffalo before joining the Texans last year.

The Bills selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. At that time, current Giants GM Joe Schoen was Buffalo’s assistant GM, while current head coach Brian Daboll was the Bills’ OC, so they’re very familiar with Singletary’s game.

March 14: Singletary says he plans to wear No. 26 with the Giants.

New #Giants RB Devin Singletary: “I’m happy to be a Giant.” On his role: “As long as I’m helping the team win, I’m cool with that.” He says he’ll stick with No. 26, which has always been his number. March 11 : Runyan and the Giants agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract worth $17 million guaranteed on Monday, a source confirmed to The Athletic . Runyan, who was No. 11 on The Athletic ’s list of the top 150 available free agents , spent the past four seasons with the Packers after being a sixth-round pick in the 2020 draft. The 6-foot-4, 307-pounder is the son of former Eagles offensive tackle Jon Runyan, who squared off with the Giants from 2000-08.

The Giants had glaring holes at both guard spots, so Runyan will step into one of those openings. He made 16 starts at left guard in 2021 before shifting to right guard the past two seasons.

Jon Runyan contract details with Giants, per source: 3 years, $30M with $17M guaranteed. Guarantees: $7.5M signing bonus, 2024 base salary ($3.75M), $5.75M of 2025 base salary ($9M). Cap hits by year: 2024: $6.5M 2025: $11.75M 2026: $11.75M — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 12, 2024

The Giants have been trying to build an adequate offensive line for over a decade. Runyan is the latest attempt to address the perennial weakness. He doesn’t project as a Pro Bowl-level player, but the Giants just need solid pieces to complement star left tackle Andrew Thomas . The hope is that Runyan can meet that standard and provide an upgrade for an offense amid a transition.

March 14: Runyan meets the Giants media and talks about his long history with the storied franchise .

New #Giant Jon Runyon Jr. talks growing up watching his dad go against Giants and Michael Strahan. Said he understands NFC rivalry. “It was a really special part of my childhood and excited to go forward and implant my own story going forward.” pic.twitter.com/rPI4XZP25S — Charlotte Carroll (@charlottecrrll) March 14, 2024

S Xavier McKinney

March 11 : McKinney is getting the big pay day he was looking for — just not with the team that drafted him. McKinney and the Green Bay Packers agreed to a four-year, $68 million deal ($17M APY) on Monday league sources confirmed to The Athletic .

The 24-year-old McKinney is now among the top-five paid safeties in the NFL . McKinney said last week on “Up and Adams” that he and the Giants were talking about a new deal and hoped they’d get something done.

“I do want to be (in New York) but at the end of the day, it has to make sense,” McKinney said.

Say cheese ! 🧀 — Xavier McKinney (@mckinney15__) March 11, 2024

For him, what made the most sense was going to Green Bay. The Giants will now need to dramatically boost their safety room with just Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock offering starter stability while Gervarrius Owens comes off a redshirt rookie season.

RB Saquon Barkley

March 11: It’s the end of the Saquon Barkley era in New York. The  Giants ’ No. 2 overall pick in 2018 is leaving for the division foe Philadelphia Eagles, per The Athletic ’s Dianna Russini.

They’ve agreed to a three-year, $37.75 million deal, $26 million guaranteed, that could be worth up to $46.75 million with incentives, according to Russini.

Eagles executive VP and GM Howie Roseman touched on the running back market at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“I think there are talented players on the free agent market,” Roseman said. “Obviously, we got a couple guys there from our team that are going to be free agents. I think that, at the end of the day, talented players end up getting paid. So, I think everyone will kind of have value on players just like any other position. Obviously, those guys handle the ball a lot, and they’re important players.”

Barkley has long said he wanted to be a Giant for life but after being franchise tagged last offseason and signing a one-year deal ahead of training camp, the running back was once again set to become a free agent. At the end of last season, he said he was open to getting a long-term deal worked out, but acknowledged that might take him to a new team.

“I just want something that’s fair and that makes sense,” Barkley said. “That’s really it. … If it’s not here, hopefully it’s some other place.”

Once the  Giants elected not to franchise tag Barkley again, the odds of him leaving increased significantly and he hit the open market for the first time in his career.

It’s a big blow for the Giants , whose offense largely centered around Barkley since his arrival. He tallied 5,211 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns in his six seasons in New York. He also caught 288 passes for 2,100 yards and 12 touchdowns.

March 14 : Barkley is introduced in Philadelphia at a press conference in which he explains the tampering allegations against GM Howie Roseman and the Eagles were blown out of proportion.

This definitely looks odd. On the tampering allegation created by James Franklin’s comments, Saquon said Franklin was confused and the recruiting pitch was made through his agent. pic.twitter.com/I2fAvhHpgN — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 14, 2024

ILB Carter Coughlin

March 11: The Giants are bringing back Coughlin, who was a seventh-round selection by the team in 2020, per Coughlin’s Instagram. Coughlin has been a core special teamer under previous coordinator Thomas McGaughey. Even though McGaughey’s was fired at the start of the offseason, Coughlin will be sticking around under new special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial.

WR/KR Gunner Olszewski

March 11 : After years of searching, the Giants finally found their punt returner and aren’t letting him go. The team re-signed wide receiver/returner Gunner Olszewski on Monday, per ESPN.

After using rookie running back Eric Gray as their primary returner, which GM Joe Schoen later admitted was not a prudent move, the Giants signed Olszewski midseason after he was cut by Pittsburgh . In 10 games in New York, Olszewski averaged 11.9 yards per return, also adding a touchdown. He’s a key player to lock down for a roster that still has plenty more needs.

LS Casey Kreiter

March 11: The Giants reportedly re-signed Kreiter on Sunday. Entering this NFL season, Kreiter had signed eight straight one-year contracts, including the last four with the Giants. At some point, the Giants will need to find a new long snapper, but the 33-year-old Kreiter is still getting the job done.

TE Darren Waller

March 11: Do the Giants have another huge hole to fill on their roster? We’ll find out. Tight end Darren Waller told Dan Duggan he remains undecided about what his future holds.

“I’m undecided at the moment,” Waller told  The Athletic . “It’s really the idea of signing up for another journey. It’s tough, it’s long, it requires a lot. And if you’re not fully bought into every single thing of the process, it’s going to be tough. I feel like at the end of the day, you’re doing guys a disservice if you’re not all the way in. So those are the kinds of things I’m taking into account.”

If Waller decides to walk away, the Giants will need to restock the position behind Daniel Bellinger. A weak draft class at the position may prompt the Giants to invest in a quality No. 3 tight end who could play a bigger role if Waller retires. Free agents Colby Parkinson or Adam Trautman could fit that bill.

Was grant williams really a bad locker room guy when he was with the boston celtics, share this article.

Was Grant Williams really a bad locker room guy when he was with the Boston Celtics ? While he definitely had a habit of getting under the skin of his teammates a bit at times, the general consensus among most was that he also had a strong bond with his former teammates.

This flies in the face of comments from Hall of Fame Celtics announcer Mike Gorman, who suggested that Williams has perhaps been more irksome than we realize. Former Boston teammate made a point of noting Williams was a good teammate on social media in the wake of Gorman’s assessment, but that doesn’t mean that the truth is not somewhere in the middle.

To talk it over, the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast dug into these rumors and shared their thoughts on what it all actually means.

Wisconsin basketball coach Greg Gard delivers epic locker room celebration after Badgers upset Purdue in Big Ten tournament

Wisconsin basketball delivered an epic victory against the Purdue Boilermakers in the Big Ten tournament semifinals on Saturday.

Greg Gard's locker room speech and celebration was just as epic.

"That may be one of the best I've ever seen," the Badgers head coach said about the team's 76-75 overtime win over the top-seeded Boilermakers .

No line, however, was delivered more perfectly from Gard than this one: "Raise your hand if you fouled out?" Gard asked his players, rather rhetorically.

The three players who fouled out raised their hands.

IT'S BRACKET MADNESS: Enter USA TODAY's basketball tournament bracket contests for a chance at $1 million prize.

The fouls, of course, raised several questions on the broadcast and on social media with many feeling the Badgers were getting hosed.

Gard likely knew this.

Then Gard, maybe even invoking Deion Sanders, the exuberant head football coach at Colorado, shouted to a staffer "can I have my theme music?"

"Jump Around" then buzzed in the background as his players did the rest.

The vibes were buzzing.

What time is Selection Sunday?

Will the Badgers have more reason to jump around later today?

Wisconsin plays Illinois in the Big Ten tournament championship game at 2:30 p.m. and then later will find out its seed for the 2024 NCAA Tournament during the Selection Sunday show.

Baden-Württemberg – gourmet delights and historic spas

Hike through the Black Forest and take in Lake Constance, relax in Baden-Baden or enjoy the culture in Heidelberg – there are plenty of reasons to visit Baden-Württemberg. This is the area of Germany with the most Michelin stars and the most hours of sunshine. Welcome to the south!

Choosing the perfect place to eat is not a decision to be taken lightly. What's it to be? A balmy summer evening in a castle setting, a terrace spot overlooking the vineyards, a view that inspires a love of the finer things in life? There are plenty of ideal hotspots for foodies in Baden-Württemberg. Visitors here can sip on a Pinot Gris in the Kaiserstuhl hills, order a freshly caught whitefish in a country inn by Lake Constance or dine at a gourmet restaurant in the valleys of the Black Forest. Good food, regional charm, natural landscapes and culture go perfectly hand in hand throughout the south-west of Germany. Here, holidays are best enjoyed with all the senses. Tourists can take a stroll through the flower-filled island of Mainau and let the floral fragrance fill their nose. Cycle along the shores of Lake Constance and gaze across the water to the Swiss Alps. Wander through the Black Forest and listen to the beautiful birdsong. Explore the caves of the Swabian Alb and feel the damp air on their skin.

Even the Romans were besotted with Baden-Baden

Spending time at one with nature is just as good for your health as nutritious food, a mud bath or a massage. There is plenty of opportunity to switch off, unwind and experience the healing power of nature in the spa resorts, thermal baths and wellness hotels. People have been doing so for a long time. After all, the Romans were obsessed with the hot springs in Baden-Baden . And famous artists followed in their footsteps later down the line. From Friedrich Schiller to Hermann Hesse, no end of poets and great thinkers have left their mark in this region. Anyone looking to be inspired by them may find themselves heading to large cities boasting modern architecture and quaint little villages with half-timbered buildings. Castles, palaces and gardens tell tales of days gone by and there are plenty of museums, including the ones dedicated to Daimler and Porsche in Stuttgart . Baden-Württemberg is the birthplace of the motor car. And the home of many other icons that have come to be known the world over. Like the cuckoo clock. Hugo Boss suits. And Black Forest ham. These can all be bought, admired in a museum or tucked into in the area between Heidelberg and Lake Constance , Karlsruhe and Ulm . Welcome to the south!

Biden-Harris Administration Announces History-Making $3.3 Billion for Locally-Led Projects That Reconnect Communities as Part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda

More than 130 communities in 41 states and Washington, DC will benefit from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act funding to stitch back communities by capping highways, adding new transit routes, adding sidewalks, bridges, bike lanes and more

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $3.33 billion in grant awards for 132 projects through the Reconnecting Communities Pilot and Neighborhood Access and Equity discretionary grant programs as part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda. The funding is aimed at reconnecting communities that were cut off by transportation infrastructure decades ago, leaving entire neighborhoods without direct access to opportunity, like schools, jobs, medical offices, and places of worship.

The Biden-Harris Administration is taking historic action to deliver for communities that have been left behind for too long. Thanks to additional funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, this investment is 18 times larger than the investments from the previous year’s standalone Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program.  Both programs are part of the President’s Justice40 Initiative .

“While the purpose of transportation is to connect, in too many communities past infrastructure decisions have served instead to divide. Now the Biden-Harris administration is acting to fix that,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Today we are proud to announce an unprecedented $3.3 billion to help 132 communities deliver better infrastructure that reconnects residents to jobs, health care, and other essentials.”

The Department has created a virtual story that spotlights communities’ stories, the historic context for the program, and the future it seeks through funding the reconnection of communities here .

In this round of funding for the Reconnecting Communities Pilot and Neighborhood Access and Equity program, the Department is awarding 72 Planning Grants, 52 Capital Construction grants and 8 Regional Planning Grants. Awarded projects include:

  • The second Atlanta grant is for The Stitch Phase 1 Implementation , a cap of Interstates 75/85, known locally as the “Downtown Connector,” will seamlessly reconnect the torn urban fabric of Downtown with a new major park, extensive transportation improvements, sustainable infrastructure, and increased affordable housing. The Downtown Connector was intentionally planned to run through established low-income Black communities as a racially charged method of ridding Downtown of “blighted” areas in favor of new commercially focused development centered around the automobile. The Stitch will provide multi-modal connections over the interstate via multi-use paths, an improved surface transportation network, and enhanced transit amenities.
  • The Reconnecting 4th Ave N: A Two-Way Vision for Reviving Legacy and Inspiring Progress project in Birmingham, Alabama was awarded a grant for a 15-block Complete Streets redesign of Birmingham’s Black Main Street. The redesign will include converting the road from one-way to two-way and will help reconnect downtown neighborhoods and businesses divided by the construction of Interstate 65 in the 1960s. The project encompasses the Historic 4th Avenue Business District, a once thriving hub of black businesses and community in Birmingham. This multimodal project will help to revive the access and connectivity that helped the community thrive prior to its conversion into a one-way street during the 1970s.
  • The second Portland grant, I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project will be used for the project’s design and constructing the project’s main reconnecting feature—a highway cover that will support new community space and future development, while reconnecting [Lower Albina to] local streets over Interstate 5 (I-5) and providing better access to the central city and the waterfront in Portland, Oregon. Building the highway cover is an essential first step to actualizing the community’s vision and improving the transportation network in partnership with the City of Portland.
  • The Reconciliation, Regeneration, and Reconnecting the Selma to Montgomery Trail through Equitable Transportation Infrastructure in Montgomery, Alabama will reconnect the West Montgomery residents located on the Selma-to-Montgomery Trail to opportunities, access, and connectivity by addressing poor social determinants of health that exist because of segregation, redlining, and construction of Interstates 65 and 85. The project identifies many disenfranchised local communities that will benefit by enhancements to the trail. These enhancements will allow the City of Montgomery to reinvest in foundational transportation solutions in Historic West Montgomery to facilitate the renaissance of the Selma-to-Montgomery Trail community.
  • The Reconnecting Rexburg: Planning & Designing Connections Across US Hwy 20 project in Rexburg, Idaho will address the impacts of the construction of US Highway 20, which had a profound impact on Rexburg residents when what was once a convenient and well-connected community suddenly found itself faced with a significant barrier, disrupting daily routines, and altering the dynamics of everyday life. The City of Rexburg intends to have a professional company research, assess, design, and plan the best options for reconnecting the disadvantaged communities that lie on the west side of Highway 20 with the town amenities that are necessary and important for daily living.
  • The Chinatown Stitch project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania will complete the first phase of design and construction work for a highway cap to reconnect Chinatown, a community that is disproportionately impacted by the Vine Street Expressway (I-676). Since its inception in the 1960s, the Vine Street Expressway has represented a threat to the Chinatown community and upon completion in the 1990s, the highway effectively separated the neighborhood into the commercial core of Chinatown to the south and a more industrial area to the North. The proposed project aims to address historic inequities caused by transportation infrastructure, restore community connectivity, and improve quality of life.

The full list of Reconnecting Communities Pilot and Neighborhood Access and Equity awards can be viewed here .

These programs are part of President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative , which set the goal that 40 percent of the overall benefits of certain Federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution. The Department prioritized applications from disadvantaged communities that demonstrated strong community engagement and stewardship to advance equity and environmental justice, and would catalyze shared prosperity project development and job creation.

Last year, in the inaugural round of the Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program, the Biden-Harris administration awarded grants for transformative, community-led solutions, including capping interstates with parks, filling in sunken highways to reclaim the land for housing, and converting inhospitable transportation facilities to tree-lined Complete Streets. These projects will help revitalize communities, provide access to jobs and opportunity, and reduce pollution.

The Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program (RCP) in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been combined with the newly-established Neighborhood Access and Equity discretionary grant program in the Inflation Reduction Act.

This joint application makes it more efficient and accessible than ever for project sponsors to apply for the historic levels of infrastructure funding made available by the Biden-Harris administration’s Investing in America agenda. While Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grants can come from either program, they share important key characteristics including prioritizing disadvantaged communities — including rural, Tribal and urban communities — and improving access to daily needs and basic services.

The Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods program is an important component of the Department’s commitment to equity and the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to supporting communities marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution and strengthening equitable development. Restoring communities like those awarded grants today helps give everyone an equal chance to get ahead and opportunity to accessing jobs and essential services such as healthcare services, grocery stores, and places of worship. To find out more about what the Department is doing to support equity, see the recently update Equity Action Plan, which can be viewed here .
