Strike gold at Cheltenham! A few essentials for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
What do I wear? There is no dress code at Cheltenham. Although the weather can be unpredictable so it is wise to dress accordingly. At the festival, ladies tend to wear hats and gentlemen usually wear a suit.
What's available in the Best Mate Enclosure? Located opposite the main stands. Offers a great view of the racing, a variety of food choices as well as extensive betting facilities and bars. Entertainment includes leading 'cover' bands.
What's available in The Tattersalls? Extensive grandstand views. A wide choice of betting and catering facilities. Access to all the bookmakers in the betting ring. Access to The Centaur, Parade Ring and unsaddling enclosure as well as the Hall of Fame. Access to the Gold Cup and Festival restaurants and the trade stands in the Tented Village.
Should I buy a racecard? It is worth it as it provides a detailed guide to everything that is happening on each day as well as features and tips. They cost £3 on the day or £2.50 in advance.
Are cameras allowed? Yes but please make sure that the flash is disabled as sudden bright lights can upset the horses. Binoculars are good for following the action and can be hired at the racecourse.
How do I pick a winner? Some signs to take note of are good muscle tone (condition), shiny coat, bright eyes, an alert manner with a relaxed walk. It usually pays to avoid horses who are sweating profusely or are very agitated (but for some horses this is normal). Also study the horse’s form.
How do I place a bet? Once the horses start to leave the Parade Ring, you'll have 5 minutes or so to place your bets with either the Tote or bookmakers. The price for each horse is displayed on the bookie's board. Prices will vary so shop around for the best value and the best Odds.
How much for a bet? If you like to have a flutter, you will need cash for betting. Most bookmakers take a minimum bet of £5. The Tote will take bets from £2. Tote betting vouchers can be bought with a credit or debit card.
What happens after the race? Once the race is over, head to the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure where the first four horses to finish will return there. The winner usually enters last. Watch the trophy presentation and then collect your winnings.
Are there facilities to eat and drink? There is a wide choice of restaurants and hospitality facilities. Mobile catering units can be found in all enclosures offering fish & chips, hog roasts, sandwiches etc. Food served may change from meeting to meeting so check the racecard for details.
What if I'm in a wheelchair? Within the enclosures, there is a paddock viewing area. There are also special race viewing areas in The Grandstand, one beside the running rail and one in The Tattersalls.
Address: Cheltenham Racecourse, Gloucestershire, GL50 4SH
How to get there: All coach packages will include transfers directly to the venue. A bus link runs from Cheltenham Spa Station from 2 hours before racing, returning after racing. If travelling by car then nearer the racecourse, you'll find AA signage directing you to the nearest available car park.

Travel & parking overview.
🏟️ Address : Cheltenham Racecourse , Evesham Road, Cheltenham, GL50 4SH, United Kingdom
Driving is a popular way to reach the venue because of its location outside of Cheltenham and the venue’s ample parking. However, due to its proximity to the town, some racegoers choose to walk or there is a range of public transport to the racecourse, including a bus service linking up to the Town Centre and Cheltenham Spa Railway Station.
The extensive parking scheme at Cheltenham Racecourse is colour-coded by parking zone and will match your label and ticket:
- Car parking - you can purchase parking in advance via the Jockey Club. If you have not purchased a label in advance, please follow the Public or Green signs. When exiting car parks, you will be required to exit via a specified route normally in the direction you came from
- Accessible car parking - this is primarily found in Red 2 by following signage. This car park is situated near to the steam railway train station, and a wheelchair-accessible buggy service operates on all racedays between there and the North Entrance
- Electric charge points – there are 2 fast charge electric vehicle Polar charging points located near the Hall of Fame entrance. Access can be restricted at some race meetings so please check the availability of the charge points in advance and be aware that your vehicle will need to be moved after parking
- Limo parking - those travelling by limousine should follow the signs for coach parks. Parking for limousines is the same price as cars and is situated in the north coach park. Cheltenham Festival limo parking needs to be purchased (£12 in advance and £20 on the day)
- Coach parking - when dropping off a coach of racegoers, please make sure you've viewed the coach parking map. Follow the coach symbol signs directing you to the closest coach park from your direction of travel no matter what colour pass the passengers may have purchased. Buses with 15 seats or less will need to purchase a public car parking pass. For coaches of 16 seats and more, please apply for a coach pass in advance (applications should be complete a week before The Festival). There is no access to the coach parks for coaches between 15:30 and 19:00
If you're being dropped off in Hackney Carriage Taxi, the drop-off point is on New Barn Lane and is signed "Taxis". If you're being dropped off in a Private Taxi, head to Swindon Lane, signed "Pick-Up & Drop-Off".
For the Cheltenham Festival, please follow the signs that will direct you to "Green" where you can be dropped off in West Car Park. It is then a 5 min walk to the racecourse.

During the Cheltenham Festival, there is a dedicated bus service where a Single or Return ticket can be bought. The Races Bus Service will operate between Cheltenham Spa Railway Station, Cheltenham Town Centre, and the racecourse (South Car Park). Feeling active? Then why not walk or cycle along the Honeybourne Line to the festival.
