The top 7 best 26 inch touring tires
Table of Contents
With this blog I’ll share my top picks for the very best 26 inch touring tires. I use several of my older-style mountain bikes for something other than trail riding and there are a couple of solid options for those who want to use their bikes for many miles.
Personally I feel that puncture-resistance and durability should be at the forefront of a tire which falls in the “touring” category. Being able to ride with confidence across less-than-ideal roads without having to worry about your tires holding out is what a great touring tire is all about.
It does mean that touring tires are heavier than their race counterparts, but that’s a necessary tradeoff if you want to get the most miles out of your tire setup. I’ve chosen tires which have a proven track record as mile-crunchers and offer the best protection the market has to offer.
So with that out of the way. Let’s head over to my list of the best 26 inch touring tires.
Schwalbe Marathon
I’ve run multiple Schwalbe Marathons on various bikes in various sizes and I can’t remember ever running a flat.
To me, this original Schwalbe Marathon set the standard for a package of puncture-protection and durability. And it spawned an entire category of spin-offs for various other cycling disciplines.
I believe it’s one of the best-selling commuting tires because they do what they’re meant for, keep you riding. And they do so consistently.
Dan Joyce | Contributor – November 22, 2008 Today there seems to be a version of the Marathon to fill any of the numerous different niches, but the original still holds up well. The KevlarGuard belt offers good puncture resistance and the sidewalls are among the toughest around. Good cornering grip and rolling performance belie the fact that it’s the heaviest of the touring tyres on test. In my experience this is a durable, good value touring tyre that does everything quite well.
- The go-to touring and commuting tire, mile-cruncher.
Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB
The Schwalbe Marathon is the ultimate allrounder in the tire department and one of the best-selling tires on the market. So the German brand decided to make a MTB-specific version of this tire: the Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB.
Although it looks like a knobby tire, if you look close enough you can see that the center tread will let you run smoothly across pavement. And just like the standard Marathon is meant for commuting and touring, the same goes for this one.
It’s a heavy tire when compared to some of the XC racers. But the biggest plus for hauling all that extra weight is that in terms of puncture protection, this tire has no equal. The reason is pretty simple. Schwalbe stuffed a 5mm strip underneath the center tread, made from highly puncture resistant rubber. And as simple as that sounds, it’s extremely effective in preventing punctures.
So for those of you who want the risk of flats nearing zero, this is the tire for you.
Mike | Site Owner – March 15, 2017 Since I’ve made the jump to these large-and-in-charge tires (in my case, on a drop-bar adventure bike rather than a pure mountain bike) I’ve felt like I’m getting pretty close to the right balance of tradeoffs and advantages. I’m not whizzing through my city streets en route to my favorite forest getaways, but I roll smoothly and comfortably enough out of town. Once I’m on the rough gravel-and-clay surface of the C&O Canal towpath outside my Washington, DC home, I really appreciate the limousine-like feel and peace of mind these tires offer.
- Mile cruncher, unparalleled puncture protection
- Heavy, meant for commuting, touring, and bikepacking.
Continental RIDE Tour
The Continental RIDE Tour is a fantastic all-round tire meant for urban commuting. It’s a 4-season option for those people who want to ride their bike year round, and be assured of riding with the most effective puncture-protection for a commuting tire.
As an allrounder it shows characteristics of durability and puncture-proofness. With both reinforced sidewalls and a puncture-resistant belt underneath the center tread. The belt differs from the more road-bike oriented, and lighter breaker, offering extremely effective protection against everything you might encounter on the road.
An unbroken center tread means it’s reasonably fast in a straight line, and it offers a tread pattern to support riding in the rain.
With all that added material and rubber, you should pick this tire for its long-lasting lifespan.
- Ultra-durable, great allround, 4-season option for urban riding and commuting. The best puncture-protection from Continental for a wider commuting tire.
Continental CONTACT Plus
The Continental CONTACT Plus is another great allround commuting tire from the German brand.
It sets itself apart from the other tires in the lineup because of a cut resistant casing, besides the puncture-resistant belt and reinforced sidewalls.
The tire sacrifices a low weight in favor of basically never running a flat, and does so perfectly. It’s flat center tread pattern means it’s a great long-lasting-durable commuter option.
Shaun Audane | Technical writer – July 11, 2017 Although there are faster tyres around, the weight penalty and more pronounced rolling resistance isn’t going to be apparent on a heavily laden expedition bike, tandem, or off-road on an adventure type build for that matter. The 35mm section is noticeably quicker, much easier to mount, and my choice if you wanted a super-dependable four-seasons road-biased tyre.
- Extremely puncture-resistant
Continental Cross King ProTection
The Continental Cross King ProTection is the newer version of a magnificent, lightweight cross-country racer.
ProTection replaces the RaceSport moniker. It’s a three- and four ply system underneath respectively the tread and sidewall, ensuring maximum puncture protection and shieldwall tearing.
This doesn’t take away from the fact that this tire is still one of the lightest in its category. A true racer.
David Arthur | Contributor – November 5, 2020 The low weight combined with the shallow tread design ensures this is a supremely rapid tyre right off the bat. Its tread pattern and rubber compound mean it works well when mounted on the front or rear, with reassuring levels of traction even when tackling technical trails.
- Maximum puncture protection in a lightweight cross-country racing tire.
Panaracer GravelKing SK (TLC)
The Panaracer Gravel King SK has become my favorite gravel tire on the market. In my mind there are two brands that stand out from the crowd, and those are american-made WTB and their Japanese counterpart Panaracer.
I’ve been a longtime fan of Panaracer. When the gravel-craze took hold of the bicycle industry, they created the tire that would serve as the de facto standard for gravel tires with the GravelKing SK. It has just the right weight, just the right tread pattern, just the right puncture protection, and all wrapped up in a beautiful package, both in black and tan-wall options.
Deservedly so, the Panaracer Gravel King SK is in my mind the true fit-and-forget, all-weather, all-season option for gravel aficionados. But will serve those bikepackers and hard-riding daily commuters just as well.
Katherine Moore | Contributor – November 17, 2021 As a ‘road plus’ or gravel tyre for riders who tend to stick to well-surfaced fire roads and tarmac, the GravelKing SK TLC could be a good-value option. However, for those who like to stray further afield and come across more variable conditions, these are limited by both grip and puncture protection.
- Superb allround gravel tire, very lightweight, with excellent puncture protection, ride characteristics, and with japanese build quality.
Panaracer RiBMo
At 26 x 2 inches and 560 grams the Panaracer RibMo is among the lightest tires for its size on this list. Its minimal tread pattern moves it into the direction of being a slick tire, perfect for fast urban commuting.
The Panaracer RiBMo uses their proprietary ProTite technology, which is an extra puncture-resistant layer which runs the entire length and width of the tire. And they offer a more durable, commuter-friendly compound.
The conclusion is this tire will make your bike feel fast and nimble for many many miles at a reasonable enough price.
Dave Atkinson | Road.cc founder – October 15, 2015 The tread shape, which is ovalised a bit like the pointy end of an egg, is designed to decrease rolling resistance while still offering good grip when cornering. I can’t say that I ever had any problems with grip, even with the hard compound. One of the reasons for this is that with a bigger air chamber you can afford to run the tyres at a lower pressure. I’m 100kg and normally put 100psi into a 25mm tyre; I found I could run these RiBMos at 85-90psi without any more danger of pinch-flatting than I’d have with a thinner tyre. That means more grip and extra comfort too, and it didn’t noticeably affect the tyre’s ability to roll.
- Ultra-light slick tire, affordable, durable, and supple, japanese build quality

- USER REVIEWS
upon my first big ride after replacing my previous tires, I was positively flying on my route due to the lower perceived effort.
none that I can presently see
Great puncture protection (no flats in 2500km of urban commute). Low price (lower than Schwalbe plus options) - Decent millage. I expect around 4000 km from the rear tire. Good grip, I've done some mountain bike rides with the tires on soft ground, had to adjust my speed to the tire but was able to keep the bike under control. Overall, a good budget tire if your main goal is to have a good puncture protection and your ride speed is up to 20km/h.
These tires are skinny/have low volume. I've got the 700x37 and 42mm tire and they measure 33 and 35mm when assembled (they are wider if 3mm wider if you consider the outside knobs). Continental does this so that the tire doesn't look heavy on the spec sheet (over 1kg for a true 42mm wide). A few other issues for me: High rolling resistance. They are faster on dirt roads than on tarmac (probably cause the road deflects and increase the contact patch). Harsh ride. you need to under-inflate the tires if you ride on cobblestones (using 55psi on 42 rear). Hard to install (worse for the 37mm version)
Endurance Density Stability
You won't win any speed trials
This is the best tire in this price bracket. It would be a best buy in CR.

Touring Bike Tire Test: Continental City Ride II
Contents and Test Summary
- Introduction
Manufacturer Specifications
- Size, Weight, Thickness
- Rolling Resistance: 25.1 Watts
- Puncture Resistance: 93 Points
- Static Wet Grip: No Data
- Conclusion: 4.0 / 5 Recommended
- Continental City Ride II
The Continental City Ride II is a value for money tire optimized for use in urban areas. The City Ride II comes with a 3/66 carcass, a modern looking tread pattern, 1 mm thick puncture protection layer under the tread, and a long lasting rubber compound. It's available in the most popular 26 and 28-inch sizes and seems to be available at quite an attractive price for a big-brand tire.
I've already tested the more expensive Continental Contact ( read review ) and TopContact ( read review ) touring bike tires. Both those tires didn't impress me in any of our tests. I find it interesting to test some cheaper tires as well to find out how much worse (if any) those tires perform compared to the top of the line tires that often carry a hefty price tag. Let's see if this tire is a good buy.
Continental City Ride II Test Results
Size, Weight, and Thickness Measurements
The City Ride II is quite a heavy tire, specified weight of the 37-622 version is 740 grams. My sample comes in at an even higher 782 grams. It measures 37 mm wide and 37 mm high on a 17C rim, this is a good size as most other 37-622 rated tires have a bit less volume.
At 2.2 mm deep, tread depth is above average and should provide for a decent mileage. With a total tire thickness at the center of the tread of 5.5 mm, it's obvious this tire has a 1 mm thick anti-puncture layer. Most tires without a thick anti-puncture layer come in at 4 - 5 mm. At 1.8 mm thick, the sidewalls are above average as well.
Rolling Resistance Test Results
Compared to the other Continental touring bike tires, performance in the rolling resistance test is decent. On average, rolling resistance is about 1 watt higher when compared to the Contact or TopContact. For its price, performance is great.
When we look at the best performing tires with comparable or better puncture resistance, the City Ride II lags the Marathon GreenGuard ( read review ) and Energizer Plus ( read review ) by close to 4 - 6 watts. It looks like Continental has some work to do.
Puncture Resistance Test Results
In the puncture resistance test, the City Ride II performs average. With a score of 13 points in the tread test and 6 points in the sidewall test, it outperforms the more expensive Continental Contact by 2 points (13 Vs 11). With a score of 6 points in the sidewall test, the sidewalls are strong enough.
When looking at the Puncture Factor scores (which are more important for touring bike tires), the City Ride II is able to outperform both the Contact and TopContact thanks to its greater total thickness of the tire in both the center of the tire and sidewalls.
Static Grip Test Results
NOTE: Grip test data is only available on tires tested after November 2018. You can find more information about our grip test here: Introducing Grip Testing
For the money, the Continental City Ride II performs great. When we compare this tire to the more expensive Continental Contact and TopContact, rolling resistance is a bit (5-10%) higher than both those tires. The good part is that it outperforms those tires in the puncture tests thanks to its 1 mm thick puncture layer which increases the thickness of the tire to provide for a better puncture resistance.
While the City Ride II performs great when compared against similar tires from Continental, adding other brands into the mix changes things. The Schwalbe Marathon ( read review ) is still our number 1 pick as it offers a lower rolling resistance and provides for a better puncture resistance. The Marathon can be found for just a bit more money (10 - 20%).

But first I had to fit them. It was extraordinarily difficult. Of the scores, perhaps hundreds, of different tyres I've fitted, these were the toughest. In the end, it took: six to eight cable-ties around each rim, squeezing the tyre down into the well; a liberal application of chalk; much swearing; and considerable discomfort. My hands afterwards were like claws.
I've fitted Marathon Plus tyres with nothing more than my fingers and thumbs, albeit in wider sizes. (I remember struggling to fit a 700x25 M+ too.) Plus-style springy rubber under the tread makes any tyre harder to manipulate. The narrower the tyre, the less malleable it is. It's good that the Touring Plus is virtually impregnable, because you'd have a real fight on your hands trying to change a tube at the roadside with winter-chilled hands.
The lack of suppleness and flex in the hand is matched on the road. There's a lifeless, wooden feel to the tyres that transmitted more road vibration to my hands than I was comfortable with. I've not noticed this so much with wider versions of the Marathon Plus – I have 35-349 versions on my Brompton, and I've used 47-559s around town.
They roll better than you might think from the weight. There is, nevertheless, a notable drop in speed, of the order of 1mph compared to the Durano Plus tyres I was using before.
So they're heavier, slower, and unyielding. So far, so bad. On the (Touring) plus side: they are very, very tough, and they're still about one thousand per cent better to ride on than solid tyres. For some purchasers, this puncture resistance will trump everything. They just want to ride a handful of miles to work and not get a flat tyre – ever. These cyclists can cheerfully ignore almost everything I've written, although even they would be better served by a wider version – the extra weight won't be as noticeable in a wider tyre (on a heavier bike), the lack of suppleness will be masked by the bigger air pocket, and they'll be easier to fit.
> Not sure which tyres you need? Check out our guide here
For road.cc readers (and writers), the Touring Plus will suit some bikes... but not the kind of bike that you would ordinarily fit with 24mm tyres. In 42mm on an urban dreadnought like a Pashley Roadster? Sure. In 35mm on a short-hop folding bike (if such a size were produced)? No problem.
On a road bike or audax bike, you're trading away everything – weight, feel, speed, roadbikeyness – for reliability. Before purchasing, be sure that's what you want to do. There are less tough tyres that, for me and you, are a better compromise. If you want a really tough 25-28mm tyre that rolls reasonably well, try Schwalbe's Durano Plus. If you want a reasonably tough tyre that rolls really well, try the Michelin Pro4 Endurance .
A fantastically tough tyre that, in this narrow size, feels uncomfortably wooden and slow. Go wider!

road.cc test report
Make and model: Continental Touring Plus tyre
Size tested: 700x28
Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?
Continental says:
"Extremely tough general commuter with a puncture-proof layer that's virtually impenetrable to stones, glass & thorns
For those riders whose only concern is puncture protection
When changing a tube is really not an option!
Don't be afraid of the puncture demon!"
Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?
A compact, highly elastic rubber breaker makes the Touring Plus extremely resistant. Stones, glass splinters and thorns have no chance. Whatever you ride over will find it virtually impossible to pierce the thick Security Breaker band under the tread (see diagram).
The layer strength of the breaker is adapted to the rolling movement of the tyre. The Touring Plus remains very comfortable in spite of its protective coating and rolls and steers very lightly.
Tyre has a wire bead.
Sizes: 47-507, 47-559, 28-622, 32-622, 37-622, 42-622, 47-622, 42-635
The dynamo track on the side won't be needed by most, but the reflective sidewalls are a good idea for commuters.
10/10 for puncture resistance, 4/10 for ride feel. I'm averaging those out.
Extremely tough, with no signs of wear so far.
The heaviest 24mm-wide pneumatic tyre I have ever encountered, by some margin.
Okay for short distances. Not great for more than a few miles in this width.
Given the longevity, a good price.

SMP+ 700 x 28 for me.

I had a pair of these on a project retro Kona MTB - 26 x 1.75.
I've used Schwalbe Marathon Plus for many years and thought I'd try something different and a bit cheaper (found the Touring Plus on special offer).
Two punctures in two months. Thorns and glass that my Schwalbe's rejected had defeated the Conti's. Same roads I'd ride with the Schwalbes. Not worth the hassle - switched back to Marathon Plus ASAP.
Strongly advise AGAINST buying this tyre for it's puncture resistance.
On my third set of 42mm tyres.. Before I switched my commute (10 miles ew) into industrial area (strewn with glass nails etc) was a puncture nightmare.
since then not one and like comment above I have worn them through to puncture layer. But then to be fair to the reviewer I am that person who wants to ride a few miles to work and never get a puncture.
I have these on my Tour de Fer in 37mm. They were easy to fit on Mavic XM719 rims and were plenty comfy on a 180km ride I did a while back. They are hugely heavy but then so is the bike, especially loaded up!
Continental Sport Contacts have served me really well as a commuting tyre for a number of years. They're pretty quick, supple and feel surprisingly fast. durability is OK, I generally replace them after about a year - usually when I start to get punctures as the centre portion of the tread squares off.
They're also widely available for under £20.
Fit them with a pair of Lezyne Saber levers, very easy. OK to carry these levers if touring but not for road biking.I like this tyre as the reviewer comments they're great for mixed riding - tarmac and a bit of towpath / gravel.
I've got these in 25mm on my CX commuting bike and didn't find them that bad... Heavy, slow, dead - yeah, but also BOMB proof. I found them a step up tougher than Durano plus. In fact, the only tyre I've worn through to the puncture layer without ever getting a puncture.
This review fits my experience, a few years ago, of these tyres. I had the '28mm' version too .
They are so hard to fit that their puncture resistance counted for little, as I was terrfied in case I got a puncture as there was no way I would be able to remove and refit the tyre out on the road.
I never normally use tyre levers to FIT tyres, but I snapped a plastic lever getting these off and off and holed an inner tube after being reduced to using metal levers to get them back on.
When on they rolled so badly that if felt as if I brought my personal headwind with me.
I still have a pair in the garage, with a handful of miles on them, but really I should just chuck them away as I am never, ever, going to use them again.
I used these a fair bit during my commutes over the past few years, as well as Top Contacts. They gave similar results. I was using 32mm versions and I rather liked them. They do roll well and are certainly tough. You do sacrifice a bit of pace uphills and under acceleration but it's worth it to avoid punctures during the winter. But the main reason for me using them is I found them to be an excellent choice if you have a mixed surface commute. They handle offroad tracks surprisingly well without feeling wrong on tarmac, like you do with knobblies. The wear rates are also impressive.
I cannot say I remember having as much difficulty getting them on. But I got shown good a good technique for fitting tyres from a mate who ran my LBS many years ago. I also have pretty strong hands so I'm often surprised when I hear people complain and resort to tools.
If you are riding on tarmac only, you would probably be better served by something like the Continental 4 Seasons.
FWIW, I had these on a Surly Long Haul Trucker in 42c.
I found that they felt rather leaden on that bike too - I liked the Comfort Contacts (again, 42c) that they replaced a lot better, and didn't notice a huge difference in durability. (The bike was used as a year 'round urban commuter).

Versatile, safe and durable
The RIDE Tour offers everything a real all-round tyre needs. A tread for every intended surface, the obligatory breakdown protection belt and a high mileage compound ensure the RIDE Tour is a trusted companion on your regular rides. Available in a very wide range of sizes making it an ideal workshop tyre for bike shops to service a variety of different bicycle types.
The RIDE Tour was formerly know as the Tour Ride, and now features an upgraded 180 threads per inch casing rather than the previos 66tpi. This means that the tyre casing is more supple, which means a quicker deformation around the road surface. This gives both better rolling resistance (a faster ride for the given rider power input) and better puncture protection as the tyre is able to deform more quickly around sharp offending objects.
Durable 3ply / 180 tpi (threads per inch) nylon casing.
- City / street tyre for a diverse range of fitments
- Available in all black, white sidewall, all white, grey and brown sidewall options in many sizes
- A thick EXTRA puncture belt under the tread
- Inexpensive & long lasting

Used for a mtb from the 90s and without suspension. Urban use and hard dirt or gravel roads. Soft and silent on asphalt, comfortable and feeling safe even on wet ground. On hard ground and gravel, they do not provide cushioning like those with more balls, but they are robust and when used for what they are designed, they do more than enough.

It goes great, the assembly is a little complicated (metal ring). On smooth surfaces it goes very well and has grip in curves. The rubber hardness is medium-high. It is perfect for using an MTB around the city.
Va genial, un poco complicado el montaje (aro metálico). Sobre liso va muy bien y tiene agarre en curvas. La dureza de goma es media-alta. Es perfecta para usar una MTB por ciudad.
To install me molan.

They are great for rolling on asphalt, and being mixed tires you have the advantage of going on dirt roads without problems.
Son geniales para rodar por asfalto, y al ser neumáticos mixtos tienes la ventaja de ir por caminos de tierra sin problemas.

Very smooth tires installed on my GT mountain bike. City and suburban street riding can't be more pleasant these Spring and Summer days. Sturdy and tough for any pavement as advertised. Well built and I give a grade "A" for excellent! Size 26" 1.75" Continental Ride Tours.

Alberto - 15/05/2023
Good tire for riding on the road or gravel. The difference between using tires with mountain studs and using these tires on the road is abysmal. They roll perfect. It is obvious that having little drawing, the diameter of the wheel is smaller so the ground clearance is lower. I had to raise the seat of the bike a bit to get it to the correct height. For the rest, for now. perfect. Note*: my bike is not electric.
Perfectas. Nota*: mi bici no es eléctrica.
Very Satisfied
Oky Witjaksono - 01/11/2022
The goods arrived in Jakarta in 15 days, due to problems checking at customs, but still within reasonable limits, the condition of the goods is satisfactory, and the packaging is neat, the communication with Bikeinn is also quite good, and for sure the price is much lower than the price of most sellers in Indonesia. Now the tires are mounted on my Surly LHT... Thanks, Bikeinn

Good afternoon, I bought these tires for my MTB bike, and I was happy with their performance, as they roll very well both on tarmac and on not too rough terrain, as it is a mixed tyre. .
Boas tardes, Comprei estes pneus para a minha bike BTT, e fiquei contente com as prestações dos mesmos, pois rolam muito bem tanto em alcatrão como em terra não muito agreste, visto ser um pneu misto. .

Peter - 12/02/2022
I've only had these a few days. I put these on my mountain bike and got rid of the knobly tyres because I only cycle on roads. I certainly noticed the reduced rolling resistance immediately. I only wish they could tolerate a slightly higher pressure than 58 psi.

well packaged for safe delivery. clean product in excellent condition fits wheel well.

Good morning, Regarding the article, I must mention that it seems to be good even though I still haven't fitted the tyres. As for delivery, I think that despite the times we have been through, it might not justify a 10-day delivery period for the order.
Bons dias, Em relação ao artigo, devo referir que me parece ser bom apesar de ainda não ter montado os pneus. Quanto à entrega acho que apesar dos tempos que passamos, talvez não justifique uma prazo de 10 dias para entrega da encomenda.

great replacement tires, and price. delivery time was ecceptable considering it was shipped to canada. puncture ban a plus as the roads i ride on are quiet gravelly at times and having ,a narrow contact area a plus for less rolling resistance was noticed when biking. all in-all a great tire.
Cheap but solid

It's a good tire to buy for a friend, a little thick and heavy, but lighter and much cheaper than the Schwalbe marathon. If you are going straight, there is almost no block noise and you are comfortable.

I bought these tires "Continental Ride Tour Rigid Black / White 26 x 1.75". I need them for an urban bicycle, to move mainly on asphalt. The shipment has been fast and without problems, delivered without any problem at the selected collection point. I like this collection option very much, and it is one of the reasons why I like to shop at BikeInn. The tires look great. To my surprise they come with reflective bands, which is great for urban use. The durability will tell the time, but the first impression is very good for a prestigious brand like Continental.

Amazingly tough tire - roles easy - corners smoothly - no flats - a bit on the heavy side. Put these tires on a older 26" mountain bike that has been rebuilt as a gravel/urban bike with drop bars and no suspension. Roles easy, corners well, tolerates a wide range of tire pressures & absolutely no flats.
