We received an email from Windstar saying that they will remove the casino operations on Wind Star (effective 4 Nov) to increase public space on board. Probably that means adding the space to the lounge. The email doesn't mention the other ships so it isn't clear whether the change is going to be fleet wide. I didn't find anything on Windstar's website about the change.

We are happy with the change as we don't use the casino. It has seemed like others don't use it much either but perhaps I haven't been around at the right times.

Viking Ocean doesn't have casinos. I wonder if that was a factor in Windstar deciding it could remove it

Of the 22 cruises I have been on, 21 on the Sailing ships, one on the motor, rarely if ever do I see people gambling,  admittedly we go to bed early after dinner between 9-10, we pass by the casino at most 3 people. I always wondered why a casino was on board. I wonder if it is all ships. Happy Sailing

I believe that the casinos, like the spa operation, is contracted out but I don't know any details about the financial agreement and whether WS has any financial interest in the casino operations.

The full 2019-2020 Windstar Atlas came out today.  I was surprised to see that all the deck plans for all six vessels no longer show any casinos, on any ship.  I checked with a few contacts in Seattle, after seeing that.  They are being removed over about the next 6 months.

Regarding the 2019-2020 Atlas:  The pdf version can be downloaded off the Windstar website today.  You can now also order printed copies from the same place on the website.  The Windstar printed brochures of the last few years, have some of the best graphics of any travel company's materials.  Get yourself a paper copy for your coffee table.  And there are some very interesting, new extended Star Collector itineraries listed.

I also received an email that the casino will be removed for the same reason from the Star Pride effective early spring 2019.

Star Legend as well. No casino as of May 22nd. I welcome the expanded public space.

NOOOO!!!  My husband and I love to play blackjack on these cruises and we have met many people that way. I even won a blackjack tournament. This is disappointing

Go to the roll call for your cruise (or set one up it if doesn't exist) and invite others to join to for a "friendly game". Set an initial meet up point and time and see who appears.

During the two weeks we sailed on the Surf the casino was very under-utilized.   There were some nights that no one was in there all night, most nights there might have been 4-6 people who wandered in, stayed for 30-60 minutes, and then left.  I don't think we ever saw more than 10 people in there, and most didn't stay all that long.  One of our friends who sailed with us enjoys gambling and visited the casino a couple of times, but said that with only two people playing, it just wasn't much fun.  There were several times that they really could have used a lot more seating in the lounge, particularly on sea days when there was a special enrichment activity that was wildly popular and became standing room only.

  • 5 weeks later...

Just left the Wind Star in Portimao, Portugal Nov 2018 before it hopped to Cadiz, Spain for two weeks of dry dock upgrades and repairs.  The ship's hull is being scraped and painted. The casino is in fact going away in favor of a coffee bar.  The sails are being replaced.  The carpets are being replaced.  The big skylight on the rear deck next to the hot tub is getting removed to make more space for tables and chairs.  My guess is that the lounge below will get some extra lighting once the skylight is gone.

Griller

Just debarked Wind Surf yesterday and the casino ladies have put in for other jobs on WS although they are currently employed by a different company based in Mauritius.

All passengers were sent $5 match play coupons, we used ours on the roulette table and each of us walked away after one  spin with $10 cash profit after betting red one spin and black the other.

We nearly felt guilty after quitting while we were ahead. Nearly.

My wife and I have been on 6 Windstar Cruises.  Was our fav.  But without a casino, what are our entertainment choices for the evening?   We are left with 1 - the lounge band.

People have mentioned, and I’ve seen, that the casinos are usually vacant.  It’s because the casino staff provide absolutely no fun/excitement.  This is sad because it was so easily corrected.   No music, and sad, boring staff.... no fun.   They acted like it was their “job” to be dealers.

Now, sadly, we will not be cruising on Windstar again.  But we liked the Windstar and now - can anyone help - what cruiseline do we switch to?   I’m having trouble finding a new cruiseline to be our favorite.

Really? Because that sad little casino is gone? Grab a drink, go on deck, enjoy the breeze and meet some new friends.

Don't know what to tell you:  the trend seems to be the other way, except on mega-ships that depend on casino revenue to makes ends meet.  Viking Ocean never had them.  Azamara is also eliminating them.  Luxury Yachts can't afford the crew space to staff them.

Don’t they still have a small casino on Seabourn ships?  I’ve met some very friendly dealers onboard and the bar staff keep the drinks flowing 🍸 😎

Nope - not on any of the ships.

Do you mean the former Seabourn ships that WS acquired years ago now?  The answer is “no” they’re gone. And that’s fine with me.

Yes, apparently Seabourn has Casinos on their ships.  Happy sailing with them!

Yes , app arently Seabourn has Casinos on their ships.   Happy sailing wi th them!

This is what I was referring to.  Choice is what is best for the consumer.  Having a small, luxury ship with a casino works for some. WS chose to remove them and that works for others.  It’s all good.

Exactly.  It's good that different companies have different business plans.  Looking at the deck plans for the enlarged Star trio, I wouldn't want to give up any of the public spaces for a casino.  Others have different priorities, so I'm glad there's a small-ship line that caters to them and allows Windstar to be Windstar.

When I was on the Surf the casino was perhaps the least used common area on the ship.  On a 14 night cruise there were probably 7-8 nights that the casino wasn't used at all, and 3-4 that there was one person playing against the house.  We never saw more than 5-6 people playing in total.

We definitely could have used additional room in the main lounge on some nights, so it was good business sense to remove it if those two weeks were indicative of the norm.

Cruise ship casinos: Everything you need to know about gambling at sea

Melinda Crow

Cruise ship casino gambling is a big deal to some cruisers. You know how you often hear people on a cruise ship planning their day around the entertainment, tours and mealtimes? Last night, I eavesdropped on a conversation where a group of six people was planning their entire next day around time in the ship's casino.

For other cruisers, the casino is more of an onboard curiosity than anything else. What are all those table games? Do people actually win money — or free cruises — playing in cruise ship casinos?

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're curious, I've compiled answers to the most common questions people ask about cruise ship casinos. Some of the answers may surprise you.

Do all cruise ships have casinos?

does windstar cruises have casinos

Most large, mainstream cruise ships have casinos, including the ships of Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line (other than Pride of America), Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Virgin Voyages.

Specialty cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line, Paul Gauguin and most expedition cruise ships do not have casinos. Premium cruise lines Oceania Cruises and Cunard have casinos, while Viking, Azamara and Windstar Cruises do not. (Windstar and Azamara actually removed casinos from their ships and repurposed the space.)

Among the luxury cruise lines, Silversea and Seabourn have casinos on their non-expedition ships; Regent Seven Seas has casinos on all its ships. Smaller luxury ships like those belonging to Ponant, Ritz-Carlton, Scenic and Emerald do not have casinos. River cruise lines do not have casinos on board, even on U.S. rivers where "riverboat" gambling is reserved for casino boats, not river cruise ships.

Are cruise casinos open in port?

With a few exceptions, cruise casinos are not open while ships are in port. They are generally limited to operating while the ship is in international waters. This is why Norwegian's Pride of America doesn't have a casino. Since the ship cruises exclusively in Hawaii, it never leaves U.S. waters.

Cruisers are also often surprised to learn that the casino is closed on some nights during Alaska cruises . Cruises that sail from Victoria, British Columbia, to Seattle on the final night are a good example. The ship goes straight from Canadian waters to U.S. waters without ever reaching international open waters, so the casino closes the night before arrival in Victoria and does not reopen during the cruise.

Ports that currently allow the cruise lines to operate their casinos while the ship is in port include Bermuda and Malta, which require cruise lines to apply for a gaming license. Bermuda has allowed casino operations for licensed ships between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. since 2013. It's an ideal situation as Bermuda has no land-based casinos, and many cruise ships overnight in port on Bermuda cruises. Malta, which does have land-based casinos, allows ships that have been approved for licenses to open their casinos between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Which casino games are on cruise ships?

Gaming in cruise ship casinos usually includes a mix of slot machines and table games, such as three-card poker, Caribbean stud poker, craps, blackjack and roulette. Regionally popular table games like Texas Hold 'em and pai gow may also be available on some sailings.

Can you win money in a cruise ship casino?

does windstar cruises have casinos

Most cruise ship casino games operate under the same rules and payout percentages you would find in a land-based casino; therefore, the answer is yes, you can win money in a cruise ship casino.

Social media posts and casino announcements would indicate that at least a small handful of people win four- and even occasionally five-figure slot machine payouts on a regular basis. But just as in a land-based casino, it's far easier to lose your stake than it is to win that kind of money.

How many casino points do you need to get a free cruise?

As at land-based casinos, each cruise line offering gambling on board sets its own criteria for earning perks through the line's casino loyalty program or players club. Points are generally tied to the time played and the amount of money you gamble, including the money you win and recirculate.

Much like an airline loyalty program, casino points usually accumulate over a year, earning you better perks as you work toward increasingly higher status levels. Annual free or discounted cruises are one of those perks, often beginning with complimentary (aka comped) inside cabins at relatively low status levels.

Many casinos also let you match casino status from land-based casinos (or even other cruise lines), giving you a leg up. For example, I haven't cruised with Carnival in a while, and I've never played in the line's onboard casinos, but I signed up for the Carnival players club via its Fun Match program. When I registered, I uploaded an offer from a competing cruise line and a players club card from MGM. Now when I log in to Carnival's website, I am shown casino offers that include free and discounted cruises.

Related: How to earn free cruises and perks with casino loyalty programs on land and at sea

Some cruise lines also issue instant awards for the number of points earned (i.e., money spent) on an individual cruise, regardless of status. That would be like an airline awarding free future flights to passengers who spent the most money on their flights, no matter their loyalty status.

Most mainstream cruise lines use comped cruises to fill cabins on dates they anticipate having a surplus of vacancies. These extra offers often appear random, but are generally targeted for marketing purposes rather than as rewards for high amounts of play. New players may receive these comps after low levels of play because cruise lines are always interested in attracting new casino players.

All of that adds up to the possibility of receiving a free cruise for a small number of points earned for cruising, as well as guaranteed free cruises as your points rise to the levels of play set out in the cruise lines' casino loyalty programs.

What is the best casino game to play on a cruise ship?

does windstar cruises have casinos

The best casino game to play on a cruise ship is the one that is most entertaining for you. Ultimately, you play to have fun, right?

The games that require a combination of skill and luck are the ones where the odds of winning are in your favor. For example, the overall odds on blackjack favor the casino by only 1%, while the casino has a 25% edge overall when it comes to slot machines.

Those odds mean the cruise lines operating casinos will favor slot machine players over card players, both in terms of the number of games provided and the loyalty perks awarded.

In summary, for winning money, the best games are skill games. For earning loyalty perks like free cruises, slot machines are the best choice.

Are drinks free in the casino on cruise ships?

Historically, drinks have not been free to cruise ship casino gamblers the way they usually are in land-based casinos. There are exceptions, however.

Free drinks in the casino are a perk of casino loyalty on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line. Reach the required level, and you'll earn free drinks from the casino bar, usually for a full status year. Carnival, Princess and Virgin Voyages also often throw in free drinks (either in the casino or throughout the ship) for individual comped cruises. Everyone actively gambling in the casino gets free well drinks on Celebrity cruises.

In addition, drinks are free in the casinos of luxury cruise lines like Silversea, Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas because all onboard drinks are included in the cruise fare. On the big-ship lines, anyone who purchases a drinks package or cruises on a fare that includes drinks will also be drinking "free" in the casino.

Are cruise ship casinos regulated?

does windstar cruises have casinos

Cruise ship casinos are regulated in two ways. They typically adhere to the laws of the ship's country of registry. But because gambling normally only takes place while the ship is in international waters, cruise lines that sail from U.S. ports also adhere to the rules set out by the Cruise Lines International Association. Those rules state that all equipment purchased and installed on the vessels of member cruise lines will meet the regulatory standards of the Nevada Gaming Control Board or other licensed jurisdiction for payback and internal software.

Additionally, house rules must be made available in every casino. Each member cruise line is to post at every gaming table minimum and maximum betting limits for each game, and only adults are allowed to play the slots or the tables.

What's the age minimum to gamble in a cruise ship casino?

The minimum age for gambling in a cruise ship casino is 18 in most cases, but there are exceptions. MSC Cruises has a minimum gambling age of 21 on any cruise with a U.S. port; otherwise, the age is 18. Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, raise the minimum age to 21 on Alaska sailings.

Do ships run casino tournaments?

Cruise ship casinos on mainstream cruise lines often host tournaments on board featuring various casino games. The list includes slot tournaments, as well as card game tournaments for blackjack and Texas Hold 'em.

Some tournaments are invitational, offered to casino loyalty members of a certain level only. These are often held on cruises hosted specifically for players who have reached that level. For instance, Royal Caribbean holds Signature cruises designed to pamper and entertain these top-level players.

Can you smoke in the casino?

Casinos are often seen as the last bastion of cruise ship smoking freedom (beyond small, designated areas on deck). But the number of ships that offer nonsmoking casinos is steadily growing.

Celebrity Cruises does not allow smoking in its ships' casinos, and the relatively small casinos on luxury ships are generally nonsmoking, as well.

Several lines have hybrid options. For example, some Carnival ships have separate smoking and nonsmoking casinos. Norwegian has separate smoking rooms on some ships; however, cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use are allowed in casinos on ships that don't have separate smoking rooms. Princess does not allow smoking except at designated slot machines, and Holland America also has designated smoking areas in the casino.

Do cruise ship casinos take cash?

does windstar cruises have casinos

Cruise ship casinos accept cash at both slot machines and table games. As an example, you can sit down at a slot machine and feed in a $20 bill, which is then converted into "credits" on the machine's screen. The value of the credit depends on the denomination of the machine. Alternatively, you might walk up to a roulette table and lay down $20 and exchange that for chips.

The exchange of cash at machines and tables is a one-way deal, even when you win. Slot machines and dealers in cruise ship casinos don't dispense cash. When you finish playing, you may be issued a paper credit slip to take to the cashier's cage for cash, or you may have your winnings loaded directly onto your onboard account on some cruise lines. At the tables, you will take chips to the cashier to exchange back into cash.

If you don't travel with cash, you can find ATMs in the casino or at guest services. Alternatives to cash in cruise ship casinos are paper credit slips, which can be played as cash at either machines or tables, onboard credit or casino free play loaded on your stateroom account, or lines of credit arranged with the casino.

You can also charge gambling money directly to your onboard account like you would charge a drink at a bar or anything else on board. Fees for gambling charges vary among cruise lines, but in most instances, table games charge a service fee, and slot machines do not.

For example, my husband recently requested money from his onboard account at a blackjack table and was charged a 5% surcharge. The ship we were on was not set up to charge onboard accounts directly from the slot machines (sometimes they are), so I had to go to the cashier for a credit slip to play. I was not charged a surcharge, although if I had asked for cash, I would have been. Both of our charges were added to our final onboard bill.

Because there is no fee added to money for slot play, onboard casinos will usually put rules in place about how quickly you can cash out of the machine. The rules are designed to keep cruisers from using slot machines as ATMs to get either cash for the table games or to cash out onboard credit they've been given from the cruise line or their travel agent.

Bottom line

If you like to gamble, cruise ship casinos provide a fun way to spend a sea day or evening on the ship. You can take lessons to learn the games you don't know how to play and even participate in tournaments.

Besides the fun of playing on board, many cruise lines have players clubs that offer onboard perks and even free cruises. And since the odds of winning are about the same as in a U.S. land-based casino, with similar regulations in place, cruise ship casinos are a safe bet for fun and entertainment — though we always encourage you to play responsibly.

Wind Star Itineraries

Wind star review, review of wind star.

The 1986-built cruise ship Wind Star is the first and oldest of the Windstar's sailing yachts, together with Wind Surf and Wind Spirit (sistership). These four-masted ships are uniquely designed for tall sailing cruises.

The vessel (IMO number 8420878) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 309163000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Windstar Cruises is a luxury brand operating a fleet of smaller-sized ships (mega-yachts) with capacity up to 310 passengers. The company call at 150 ports throughout the Caribbean, Central America, South Pacific, Asia, Europe. Currently, Windstar is a subsidiary of Xanterra Parks and Resorts (USA's largest national and state park concession management company).

Windstar Wind Star cruise ship

Windstar's namesake vessel, the 180-passenger ship Wind Star, is a 4-masted, motorized sailing yacht and the first of three in the Windstar's fleet. Yet, continuous maintenance and recent repair have kept it fresh and youthful. In the staterooms, scratchy old bathrooms have been spruced up with granite countertops, high-piled towels and nice shower sprayers; and new combination DVD/CD/iPod Nano players have upped the ante in the department of tech toys. Public places and dining venues have been updated, too.

Decks and Cabins

Wind Star yacht staterooms (74 total, in 5 grades) include 1x Suite and 73 Oceanview cabins. All accommodations are with Queen-size double beds, LCD TV, DVD player, Bose speakers, SoundDock for Apple iPods. The Owner's Suite is sized 220 ft2 / 20 m2 but like the rest of the cabins lacks a step-out balcony.

The boat has 5 decks , of which 2 are with cabins.

Windstar Wind Star ship 2012 renovations included a full update of the public rooms' decor. The staterooms are newly enhanced with leather headboards, linen wall coverings, armchairs, new lighting features, carpeting, window coverings, new artworks, stylish bed cushions and throws. With large windows and skylight, the ship's lounge is full of natural light the whole day.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Wind Star ship has two primary dining venues, both open seating: the AmphorA Restaurant in the evenings which offers course-by-course gourmet cuisine and Veranda restaurant with casual full-service and buffet dining (breakfast and lunch). A reservation is needed for Candles if you choose to dine under the stars. In 2012 The Restaurant was redesigned, renamed Amphora, and a new menu was launched. The Pool Bar also was redesigned to make additional alfresco seating for sunset dining at Candles Grill with a new awning and deck furniture.

Follows the complete list of Wind Star restaurants and food bars.

  • AmphorA Restaurant (boat's dining room, open-seating; offers 5-course gourmet dinner menu which is changed daily; along with onboard-made bread, in all ports of call the executive chef goes to the local markets to shop for fresh ingredients)
  • Candles Cafe & Veranda (a smaller "dining room" which offers buffet-style breakfast and lunch, as well as a la carte menu through the wait staff; its indoor area is called "Candles Cafe" and features floor-ceiling panoramic windows; the outdoor seating area is called "Veranda" - in the evenings, it transforms into "Candles Grill" (alfresco steakhouse).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

With teak wide-open decks of over 10,000 sq.feet of space, generous for this size ship, and 21,500 ft2 (2,000 m2) new sail overhead, Wind Star guests may find hidden nooks for their private moments with the feeling of their own veranda. Be sure you'll benefit from small Star ship's access to unreachable otherwise ports of call. Onboard amenities are the WindSpa, Casino, Library, Lounge, Pool, Watersports Platform, and Hot Tub. During 2012 renovation The Reception Zone received a make-over, as did The Lounge with new hardwood flooring and a new AV system.

  • Lounge (boat's theatre/main show lounge for live evening entertainment); Library

Wind Star Wiki

Wind Star cruise ship was built as the first tall sailing ship in the fleet of Windstar Cruises. She is a member of a very specific class of three sister vessels - Wind Star, Wind Spirit and Wind Song. Wind Song had fire in the engine room in 2002, and the ship was scuttled. Windstar sailing yachts have a modern design, but still feature 6 sails on 4 masts, that are handled via a sophisticated computer program.

Windstar Wind Star cruise ship

The yacht's design is based on smaller 5,350-ton motor sailing yachts constructed by the French shipbuilding company "Societe Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre". Among those are the Windstar sail ships Wind Surf and Wind Spirit, and also Club Med 2 .

During Wind Star's last drydock refurbishment (2023, at Navantia Cadiz) a new mast was installed.

In 2012, Windstar completed an extensive (18-month long) drydock refurbishment project for renovations of the company's all three sail yachts - Wind Star, Wind Spirit and Wind Surf. Works included overhauls of all passenger staterooms, dining venues, public spaces, as well as new sails.

The ship Wind Star has fleet's first female Captain - Belinda Bennett (born on St Helena Island - a British Overseas Territory in South Atlantic Ocean). Her maritime career started at age 17, as a deck cadet on the cargo-passenger ship RMS St Helena . In September 2005, she joined Windstar as Second Officer and became Captain (Master) of Wind Star in January 2016.

Beyond the Reach of Ordinary

We scour the world for amazing places just this side of unreachable, then seek out the most authentic ways for guests to experience them - in small groups that are easily absorbed by local cultures rather than intruding on them. Our itineraries are port intensive, often with exclusive landfalls larger ships can't access. And we often stay late into the evening or even overnight in places where neon dims the stars. Come. We can't wait to show you what we've found.

Canada & New England

Long before Columbus, Vikings crossed the Labrador Sea from Greenland to settle in L’Anse Aux Meadows. Centuries later, Portuguese fishermen, Basque whalers, French trappers, and English pilgrims would follow and discover a Promised Land where nature nurtures both body and soul. Here, where the sun first kisses North America, explorer Jacques Cartier found a place where “the scenery is indeed worth seeing and can’t be properly described in words.” The ravishing lighthouse-studded coast still inspires awe. Manna from the sea still delights palates. And small cruise ships like ours still ply these waters with a freedom denied to larger cruise ships.

Canary Islands

Natural beauty is rampant in the Canary Islands, with a diversity that is astounding. Martian landscapes on Lanzarote. Lush green La Palma. Cloud forest, cliffs and canyons on La Gomera. Tenerife with its spectacular beaches and soaring Mount Teidi. Then there are the skies, piercing blue by day and some of the world’s darkest and most stargazer-friendly at night. Plus, a climate that’s earned these islands a reputation as the Land of Eternal Spring, with temperatures averaging 64° to 77° F year-round. And that’s just the backdrop. On stage you’ll find a culture that blends Spanish and African into a fusion of flavorful and colorful cuisines and customs, and activities for everyone: history lovers, art lovers, beach lovers, nature lovers, and wine lovers who will swoon over the islands’ famously improbable wines.

IF YOU COULD DESIGN THE PERFECT ISLAND itinerary it would look a lot like these. Ports of call would include tiny towns and hidden harbors known only to private yachts and small ships like ours. Schedules would allow for dropping the Watersports Platform in turquoise bays and raising sails on the way to your next island rendezvous. And the laid-back island vibe would continue on board with a mouthwatering Signature Onboard Barbecue by the pool. Best of all, on every cruise there would be one day that was even more special than the rest, when you land on a secluded beach for Windstar’s Signature Beach Party, elaborate buffet and watersports included.

Costa Rica & Panama Canal

Natural and man-made wonders combine in this exotic region where you are an explorer by day with cocktails on the fantail of your boutique ship by night. Learn more about their history, flora and fauna from a local Naturalist on board, and transit the massive Panama Canal during daylight hours. Against all this color and adventure, your white ship rests at anchor awaiting your return from a delightful day of exploring. Meet your Costa Rican Naturalists!

Grand Adventures

From the 17 th to 19 th centuries, it was a rite of passage for young aristocrats to embark on a Grand Tour. This extended journey to the world’s great cities was a way to breathe life into their classical education, broadening their horizons and gifting them with knowledge and understanding that would enrich their own lives and their society.   Windstar's Grand Adventures offer homage to those extended journeys with meticulously curated voyages spanning multiple destinations over multiple months, each one highlighting a region unique in its cultural and natural heritage. Visit places both on and off the beaten track, checking must-sees off your bucket list and discovering secret places that few travelers ever see. Take the time to get to know people who still live much as their ancestors did. Taste fine wines and cuisines perfected over generations. Admire works of art from Roman aqueducts to tie-dyed sarongs. And spend relaxing days on deserted islands, in Japanese gardens, or cruising stunning fjords and canals. It’s the kind of education and perspective you can only get from travel. And it’s the kind of travel you can only get from a private yacht-style cruise on Windstar.

Welcome to the land of milk and honey, the source of world faiths and a lodestone for world travelers, whether their interest is secular or sacred. Devotion here is expressed in many forms. The carved pink limestone of Petra, doorways sized for colossal gods. Humble caves and catacombs, grand palaces and pyramids, the natural tranquility of olive groves and gardens. Greek temples. Christian shrines. Jewish fortresses. Wondrous museums filled with relics of the world’s oldest civilizations. All will take your breath away and fill you with awe, just as they did the prophets and disciples who came this way before you.

Simultaneously young and old, hot and cold, Iceland is a mass of contradictions. Nestled near the Arctic Circle yet warmed by the Gulf Stream, its ports never freeze, yet glaciers drape majestically over volcanos, valleys, fjords, and shorelines. And water – liquid water – is everywhere, falling, bubbling, steaming, spouting, and fueling the country’s 100% renewable energy grid. Come name one of the many unnamed waterfalls that thunder off cliffs. (Perhaps Thorskeggfoss, Thor’s Beard?) Join the nation’s passionate ice cream lovers for a licorice-and-chocolate cone. And be inspired by a nation of avid readers who believe you really can have it all.

Tips If You Sail On The Windstar Star Legend Cruise

W hen planning a luxury cruise around the Mediterranean, you should truly consider the Windstar Star Legend. There are maximum 312 passengers on board and the crew goes above and beyond to tend to your needs, so it is is the definition of a stress-free vacation. No crowds, no pressure to dress up (unless you want to), and the ability to enjoy each port of call by simply walking off the ship. Even debarkation was a breeze.

When I was invited to experience a Mediterranean Winter cruise aboard the Star Legend , I knew it would be special, yet it completely surpassed my expectations. From the moment we checked in at the World Trade Center terminal in Barcelona, we were greeted by smiles and offers to help. After checking out our suite, we went to have lunch at the buffet, which had ample outdoor seating. We then toured the spa and learned we could enjoy the heated thermal chairs, sauna and steam room at anytime during our cruise. It was only the beginning of a fabulous and relaxing week.

Embarking on a journey aboard the Windstar Star Legend cruise ship is not just about traveling from one destination to another; it’s about indulging in an experience that blends the thrill of exploration with the utmost in stylish comfort and luxury.

From its sleek design to the array of upgraded amenities and personalized touches, the Star Legend offers a very elevated experience to its cruisers, in great part thanks to its crew.

Led by Captain Mark Symonds, Hotel General Manager Wilhelm Steinbrunner, Executive Chef Gavin Anthony Baxter, Chief Purser Royston Jadhav, and Chief Housekeeper Hadi Saptono, we encountered outstanding service throughout the cruise.

Tips for your Star Legend Cruise

Here are my top tips for making the most of your voyage on Windstar’s Star Legend:

1. Embrace the Luxury of Your Suite

Windstar Cruises has redefined luxury with its meticulous attention to detail in the Star Legend staterooms. All the suites are spacious and have luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, filtered water that is replenished as often as needed, and a fully stocked mini bar.

Bathrooms have two sinks, a full-size tub and L’Occitane toiletries. There are a few balcony suites with beautiful ocean views, a separate living room, and French doors that open to the fresh sea air. The suites are designed for the ultimate relaxation, complete with new bathrooms and walk-in closets, where you will find an embroidered waffle-weave robe.

The fresh flowers added such a nice touch to our suite and we were also delighted by the fresh fruit bowl awaiting us as soon as we embarked. We stayed in the midship section on deck 5, which was super convenient.

2. Discover Culinary Excellence

Windstar Star Legend is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, a partnership that promises an inventive take on cruise dining. From the alfresco ambiance of the Star Grill by Steven Raichlen to the refined touches of Amphora, every meal is an adventure in itself.

Innovative dishes and new dining venues helmed by famous chefs like acclaimed chef Anthony Sasso at his signature restaurant Cuadro44 ensure that your palate is always treated to exquisite flavors.

Enjoy the open seating policy at the main dining restaurant, Amphora, which allows for flexible dining times and the opportunity to savor each meal at your own pace. Take advantage of the great wine list. Even the wines included in the beverage package were wonderful! You can also find top wines like Caymus at an extra charge.

3. Don’t Forget Self-Care!

The new spa and fitness center aboard the Star Legend are sanctuaries of health and relaxation. Whether you’re looking for an invigorating workout in the fitness area or a luxurious treatment in the world spa, these facilities are designed to rejuvenate your body and spirit.

You should also make time to relax in the heated pool after your busy day exploring European cities and towns, or just enjoy the heated whirpools

4. Enjoy The Yacht Club

Go to the Yacht Club on Deck 8 to enjoy gorgeous ocean views and the upscale ambiance while you drink your morning cappuccino or have an afternoon snack after your shore excursion. Just know that last call for sandwiches and sweet treats like scones, cake and tarts is 6 pm. Even when it’s too late for snacks, this was the perfect spot for socializing. We saw so many passengers playing cards, reading books or just making new friends in this wonderful space.

5. Have Fun at Night

Yes, there is entertainment aboard the Star Legend! Live music and performances by local musicians add a vibrant touch to your evenings, while you enjoy your favorite beverage at the Compass Rose or the Lounge. My personal favorite was the crew’s farewell show. I almost didn’t go but felt in debt to the amazing crew members that had made sure our cruise was wonderful and I am so happy to have seen the performances. I also laughed so hard during some of the skits.

6. Book your Shore Excursions Early

The Star Legend’s small ship advantage, akin to its sister ships Star Breeze and Star Pride, means you can enjoy intimate shore excursions that are meticulously planned for immersive experiences. That means that some shore excursions might sell out during peak season. That’s why my tip is to book early, as soon as you know what you would like to explore at each port of call.

We went on the Concierge Collection Wine & Cheese tour in Aix-en-Provence and it was a fabulous way to get a taste of this beautiful town an hour away from Marseille. Our guide, Beatrice, was knowledgeable, funny and full of tips so we could explore Aix on our own once we finished the wine tasting.

7. Order Room Service

Windstar Cruises include room service at no extra charge even on debarkation morning. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast every single morning in our stateroom, including fresh omelettes, French toast, pancakes, freshly squeezed orange juice, and cappuccinos.

At night you can order from the main dining menu but we did not, since the dining room experience was so wonderful.

8. Leave the Sequins and Black Tie At Home

This intimate cruise is upscale but you won’t find any gala nights that require evening gowns or a tuxedo. I found this so liberating! The Windstar crowd tends to be well-dressed, but in a  business casual kind of way. Dark, unripped jeans are more than okay, but you can totally dress up more if you feel like it.

9. Make the Most of Port Overnight Stays

One of many of the Star Legend’s differentiating factors is that it stays overnight at several ports of call. During our cruise, we stayed overnight at Barcelona, Nice and Civitavecchia (a little over an hour outside of Rome), which provides you with the opportunity to get a full day of exploring with no rush.

You can also have dinner at local restaurants if you want to try something different. We went to Barcelona’s Compartir (we booked weeks in advance) and it was lovely to be able to go back to our ship at leisure. In Nice, many cruisers went to Monaco and Montecarlo at night, something you cannot do on other ships since they sail away in the evening.

10. Take Advantage of On Board Special Promotions

You will find special promotions each day on the Windstar Wayfinder; we took advantage of a Spa Package for multiple treatments. If you loved your cruise, take advantage of promotions on board to book your next cruise. You will get a free onboard credit among other perks. Also, if you enjoy wine, I highly recommend paying for the all-inclusive package so you don’t worry about drinks, wifi or tips.

11. Don’t Miss The Sailing Away Flag Ceremony

Make sure to watch the sailing away flag ceremony at least once during your cruise. It is so solemn and a must-do. The 1492 music only adds to how special this moment is!

A cruise on the Windstar Star Legend is an exploration of luxury, adventure, and the intimate feel of a small ship, enriched by the Windstar Star Legend’s elegance and the array of new suites, venues, and experiences. From the plush comforts of your suite accommodation to the fun shore excursions and the serene moments spent on the deck overlooking the European ports of call, every aspect of your journey will help you recharge and create unforgettable memories.

Would you book a cruise if you didn’t know where you’d be sailing?

That’s exactly what Windstar Cruises is hoping guests will be willing to do next year during its new “mystery cruise,” which is scheduled to set sail aboard the Star Legend on April 19, 2025.

The eight-day voyage will depart from and return to Athens, Greece — but every other stop on the itinerary will be a mystery until the captain reveals it 24 hours ahead of arrival. Once the next location is announced, then guests will be able to choose from a variety of shore excursions at that destination.

“It’s going to be a lot of places — the majority of them, if not all of them — we haven’t been before,” said Janet Bava, Windstar’s chief commercial officer.

The idea arose during Windstar’s 11-day “Tahiti & the Tuamotu Islands” sailing, which departed from Papeete, French Polynesia, on Feb. 4 aboard the Star Breeze. The 312-guest vessel replaced the 148-passenger Wind Spirit in French Polynesia and will remain in the region year-round.

The vessel was supposed to take passengers to destinations in the Tuamotu and Society Islands, but a cyclone disrupted those plans just two days into the itinerary.

Because the tropical storm would have made it dangerous and uncomfortable to continue on the course, the onboard operations team quickly drew up a new itinerary to escape the bad weather.

Instead, Star Breeze headed northeast to the remote Marquesas Islands — where Windstar had already planned to launch new itineraries in July — for three days of exploration. Passengers were thrilled.

The positive response to this on-the-fly change got Windstar’s leadership team thinking: What if they could create an entire itinerary filled with unknown-to-guests ports of call? They spent the next few days planning and unveiled the mystery cruise concept to travelers onboard the Star Breeze.

“It’s sort of awakening the sense of adventure again, what travel should always do,” said Chris Prelog, Windstar’s president. “It’s something different, something really interesting. It’s a cruise for guests who like adventure, who don’t want to plan everything out.”

Prices start at $3,799 for the cruise. The mystery itinerary will double as a president’s cruise, with Prelog joining the sailing. But even Prelog won’t know where the ship is headed until 24 hours before, to help maintain the mystique.

“The team has decided collectively not to tell me either,” he said. “They know if they tell me a detail, I’ll tell [guests] anyway.”
