Traveling labor and delivery nurse job description
Labor and delivery travel nurses work with moms and newborns, referred to as couplets, from admission to discharge. This dynamic is unique to obstetric travel nursing; the nurse is expected to monitor both the mom and the infant at the same time. Because of this, it’s important that these nurses are comfortable working with adult health conditions and pediatric/neonatal patients. The health of mom and baby are their top priorities, and they create an environment for the safest delivery possible. They play a key role in providing client-centered family education, and are important resources of information for moms and families.
As a labor and delivery travel nurse, the facility you take an assignment at can impact the nature of work. For example, some hospitals have more resources and are better equipped to handle different types of high-risk pregnancy issues. Patients who already know they have high-risk needs may be more drawn to seeking care at those facilities, meaning you’d potentially end up working with more high-risk cases. These cases might be high risk due to pregnancy, or for pre-existing conditions such as diabetes mellitus, lupus, or sickle cell disease. It’s also important to consider the patient population’s access to prenatal care. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a lack of access to maternal healthcare can result in a myriad of negative health outcomes, including premature birth, low birth weight, and even maternal mortality.

Labor and delivery travel nurse job requirements, associates or bachelor's degree.
Aspiring L&D travel nurses should start by earning either their Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program. While a BSN isn’t required, a lot of facilities prefer it and it could increase hireability.
Passing score on NCLEX and bedside experience
After acquiring a degree and passing the NCLEX-RN exam, the newly accredited travel nurse must gain experience at the bedside for about a year before specializing in L&D.
Certifications
Certifications demonstrate dedication and excellence, and could potentially increase hireability and job opportunities. One of the most popular and highly recommended certifications a labor and delivery nurse can get is the Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) credential from the National Certification Corporation.
According to the NCC website, the RNC-OB is for, “licensed registered nurses in the US and Canada with a minimum of two years of specialty experience in providing care to hospitalized pregnant women during the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn periods.” Traveling labor and delivery nurses also need:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring
If labor and delivery travel nurses wish to advance in their field, they have the option to become a certified nurse-midwife, or a nurse practitioner in obstetrics and gynecology. Both require additional experience and education, including a Master in Science in Nursing (MSN). It is also possible to become a Certified Childbirth Educator , or a Lactation Consultant .

Popular Labor & Delivery Travel Nurse jobs
Labor and delivery travel nurse job responsibilities.
According to Top Nursing, an online resource for nursing programs, some of the typical responsibilities of an L&D nurse include the following:
- timing contractions
- administering medications such as oxytocin and magnesium sulfate
- monitoring the vital signs of both the mother and baby
- helping induce labor
- starting IV lines
- providing assistance during cesareans (c-sections)
- assessing for possible complications
Additionally, L&D travel nurses must anticipate potential complications and being prepared for them. For example, a known history of high blood pressure (hypertension) or kidney disease increases the risk for preeclampsia. Furthermore, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality, and is something LDR travel nurses need to be aware of. It's important to identify risk factors for PPH, closely monitor the couplet, and be familiar with the PPH cart and protocol. Familiarity and comfort with use of rapid infuser equipment is key, as well as mass transfusion procedure.
Admission assessments
During admission assessments, the nurse determines the estimated time of birth, checks the frequency of fetal movement, and looks for other premonitory signs of labor. If applicable, they also find out about any previous pregnancies and/or birthing experiences, start tracking the frequency, duration, and intensity of contractions, and confirm if they have a supportive adult to accompany them during the delivery. During physical assessment, these travel nurses measure fundal height, check uterine activity (including contraction frequency, duration, and intensity), assess the status of membranes (intact of ruptured), and check the following: cervical dilatation, degree of effacement, fetal status, and pain level.
Bedside shift report hand-off
Within labor and delivery travel nursing, there’s extra emphasis on the bedside shift report hand-off. This hand-off can increase patient safety and decrease the risk for communication-related medical errors. L&D is unique in that there are two reports, first on mom then on baby. This practice gives space for increased safety and proper transfer of care, including the patient and environment (infusing high-risk medications, eg. Pitocin). It also increases the patient's confidence in team communication, while putting them at ease about the next caregiver. The transfer and coordination of care at the bedside is also recommended when the couplet (mom and baby) is ready to transfer from LDR to M/B.
Obstetic emergencies
According to Nursing Management in Labor and Birth (Lippincott), the nurse’s role in childbirth is to ensure a safe environment for the mother and the birth of her newborn. It is critical to provide anticipatory guidance and explain each procedure (fetal monitoring, intravenous therapy, medications given, and expected reactions) and what will happen next. Some common obstetric emergencies that L&D travel nurses see include:
- placenta previa
- abruptio placenta
- ruptured uterus
- shoulder dystocia
- prolapsed cord
- postpartum hemorrhage
It is also important to anticipate timely management of mothers who are Group Beta Strep (GBS) positive; nurses administer antibiotics to women who are at increased risk of having a baby who will develop GBS disease. The antibiotics help protect babies from infection, but only if given during labor. Antibiotics cannot be given before labor begins because the bacteria can grow back quickly.
Newborn fall prevention
Another thing that LDR travel nurses need to be aware of is preventing newborn falls. According to the Joint Commission , heightened risk of fall or drop happens during cesarean birth, use of medication within four hours, second or third postpartum night, or during breastfeeding. TJC also lists out some ways to intervene, including providing family education, coaching caregivers to keep bed side rails up when feeding, identifying if mothers or other caregivers are starting to get drowsy, and assist in placing the newborn in their bassinet, among other preventative measures.
Fetal heart monitoring
A large part of an L&D travel nurse’s role includes fetal heart rate monitoring. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, “fetal heart rate monitoring is the process of checking the condition of your fetus during labor and delivery by monitoring your fetus's heart rate with special equipment.” There are two types of fetal monitoring: auscultation and electrical monitoring. The former refers to listening to heart rate using a stethoscope, and the latter includes the use of electrodes. The nurses are interpreting baseline rates, variability, and the presence or absence of accelerations and decelerations. This information is collected and used to prepare and better respond to any potential risks.
L&D travel nurses must be adept at recognizing Category I, II, and III tracings, and know how to respond. For example, a Category I is a normal tracing, which has a baseline 110 to 160 beats per minute with moderate variability and no late or variable decelerations. Accelerations and early decelerations may be present or absent. According to ACOG, monitoring and management of a category I tracing includes intermittent or continuous fetal monitoring based on clinical status and underlying risk factors.
Category III, on the other hand, includes absent baseline variability, recurrent late decelerations, recurrent variable decelerations, or bradycardia, and might indicate an increased risk of fetal acidemia. The L&D nurse must immediately escalate this finding to the provider and interdisciplinary team in order to prepare for delivery. They should also reposition the mother to the left or right lateral and anticipate the need for an intravenous fluid bolus. Other potential interventions for this tracing include scalp stimulation to provoke fetal heart rate acceleration, which is a sign that the fetus is not acidotic. According to ACOG, if there is no improvement after conservative measures and scalp stimulation does not result in acceleration, delivery is advisable.
Newborn identification systems
It’s the responsibility of the nurse to be vigilant while working to give high-quality, safe care. According to a 2018 report published by the Joint Commission ,“Newborns are at high risk of misidentification due to their inability to speak and lack of distinguishable features. Furthermore, they point out that “misidentification has also resulted in feeding a mother’s expressed breastmilk to the wrong newborn, which poses a risk of passing bodily fluids and potential pathogens to the baby.” There are interventions that L&D nurses can use, including distinct naming systems, standardized practices for identification banding, and pre-established staff communication tools.
Patient education
L&D travel nurses spend a lot of time educating their patients, often new mothers, and their families about what to expect both at the hospital and at home. Some specific examples of patient education are general postpartum perineal care, post-episiotomy care, post-C-section wound care, and signs of postpartum depression, or PPD. Sometimes this looks like answering a family’s set of questions about how to care for mom and the baby after being discharged, and sometimes it looks like offering nervous families a little confidence boost. The bond LDR nurses make with their patients is critical; it’s important to build rapport and create a trusting relationship.
Giving birth is an incredibly physical and emotional experience. Strong L&D nurses are able to navigate the complexities of complications and last minute changes while maintaining clear-but-compassionate communication with mom and the family.

Benefits of being a labor and delivery travel nurse, low nurse-to-patient ratio.
Labor and delivery nurses often have a low nurse-to-patient ratio, especially when compared to other specializations. Due to this, they often get to spend more time with their patients and their families during a monumental life event, and form valuable bonds while gaining experience. That being said, the ratio can vary depending on high risk nature or risk for complications.
In June 2022, the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses published updated standards for nurse staffing covering the continuum of inpatient childbirth and neonatal care. Since the first edition (published in 2010), there has been a substantial amount of evidence linking nurse staffing to patient outcomes.
Safe, high-quality care requires the appropriate number of nurses to provide comprehensive assessment, nursing interventions as needed, emotional and physical support, and discharge education.
Mentally rewarding
L&D travel nursing is also exciting! Delivery can happen at any time of day or night, and can widely vary in how long it takes. Each birthing story and circumstance is different. They have the opportunity to work in hospitals, birthing centers, or even in homes, for at-home births. Labor and delivery nurses get to witness their patients become parents, and the impact they have on their lives is lasting. It’s a very rewarding nursing specialty, and has a lot of room for career advancement.
Ability to travel
As a labor and delivery travel nurse, you'll get invaluable experience working in new and diverse healthcare facilities. Labor and delivery travel nurses are able to gain a broader range of skills and experience which could lend itself to a higher salary down the road. It can also be incredibly fulfilling to be in charge of your career by exclusively doing travel L&D assignments.
Job outlook for labor and delivery travel nurses

Travel Nursing Reviews
Everything is so simplified. I am honestly happy I found them. I plan on doing more contracts with them in the future. From their process to submitting yourself to assignments, to the ease of compliance, and the easiest time keeping system, I would definitely recommend to everyone. Samantha is very sweet and I can see they truly care about their nurses.
Jennifer, RN
The response time from my recruiter and nurse specialist is amazing! They both have been so great to work with on my first assignment out in California!!! Chad and Samantha both are super caring and very responsive! I already extended my contract with the hospital because of the smooth process. They made the transition from Florida to California a lot loss stressful than I imagined. Would definitely recommend them both!!!
Stability Healthcare has been amazing at helping me transition into travel nursing. I talked to many recruiters when looking into travel nursing and Chad in particular stood out. He was always so kind and quick to respond. Everyone I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to from Stability has been just as kind and it truly feels like they all care about you enjoying your assignment.
My recruiter, and other staff I have had the pleasure of interacting with, are all so friendly and helpful. My recruiter is responsive, and even reached out while she was on vacation to check on me! I’ve worked with other agencies in the past, but Stability is next level when it comes to making your travel nursing experience as seamless as possible! Special shout out to Lindsay (best recruiter ever) and Tracy. Amazing people to work with.
Brittany J.
My recruiter is very responsive and personable. I have NEVER had any issues with them!! This agency even has PTO! None of my co workers with other agencies have this benefit!! Also the rates are equal or higher than most other agencies!! Everything feels more like family than business and for that I would choose stability over any other agency!! I am so happy I chose to work with them!
They are they for you via, call , text or email. And it’s very easy transition. They encourage you to ask questions and make themselves available from the moment your hiring process starts. To even checking on you on first day assignment to the following week.
Sopheare C.
My recruiter Amanda is amazing and always timely with her responses. Debbie who is my nurse experience specialist who is with me all times of the contract is truly awesome. Love how responsive she is and will answer any and all my questions. Big thanks to Jesse my compliance coordinator for making all the appointments and getting me travel ready. Can’t thank my team enough for all they do. Any question or issue I have they resolve right away. And I love that they breakdown each contract into a spread so you know exactly what your getting for the terms of the contract.
Someone was always available to answer my questions. I know my recruiter went above and beyond to get me the best pay and benefits. I have worked previously with companies that I feel was less than honest about benefits, such as PTO. I’m now sure how Stability Health treats their staff, but they are doing something right! I have yet to speak to someone that wasn’t pleasant. It’s as if they all love their job and it shows and it keeps me excited to be a part of their team. At this point, I would not consider traveling with another company. I don’t feel like a number. I don’t know how they do it! I recommend Stability Health to every traveler I meet. I tell them they would be making a huge mistake to go with any company.
I have been incredibly impressed by the professionalism, ease of communication, ability to have all requirements for onboarding fulfilled in a timely manner, and just overall outstanding service. Lindsay Hernandez is my particular recruiter and she has been a pleasure to work with, as well as all the team members at Stability. I’m looking forward to staying with them for my next assignment. I highly recommend them to my nursing friends, and anyone looking to travel as a nurse!

Travel Nursing as a Labor and Delivery Nurse
Labor and Delivery (L&D) nurses care for and monitor mothers and babies during labor and birth. L&D is regularly considered one of the most in demand travel nursing specialties. However, there are several issues regarding the L&D travel job market that L&D nurses interested in travel nursing should be aware of in order to properly set expectations and plan accordingly.
Labor and Delivery Travel Nursing Job Outlook
L&D was listed as one of Healthcare Traveler Magazine’s 7 most in demand specialties for 2013 . This is no surprise as L&D is a highly specialized unit. Therefore, experienced nurses can be tough to come by. However, high demand doesn’t necessarily equate to stability.
Discover your next travel healthcare job on BluePipes!
Industry insiders interviewed by Healthcare Traveler were quick to point out the volatility in the L&D travel job market. In short, demand for the specialty tends to experience peaks and valleys. My personal experience as a recruiter indicates the same. There were times when my old company would have hundreds of L&D openings nationwide and others when we would be lucky to have 10. I’ve heard a lot of speculation as to why this volatility exists. Some contend that demand spikes are consistent and cyclical based on some event that happened 9 months prior. For example, some people point to Valentine’s Day or wedding season as the culprits. However, there really doesn’t seem to be any consistency based on my experience.
Interestingly, it’s very possible that the volatility drives demand for L&D travel nurses. Hospitals may realize that they’re going to experience major spikes throughout the year. They then staff for the slower period and utilize travelers for the peaks as a measure to cut down on overall staffing costs.
In any case, L&D nurses should game-plan for this volatility. Flexibility is always the key to solving this problem. There may not be an assignment available in your most desired location when you’re ready for your next assignment, but there will definitely be opportunities available elsewhere. We highly recommend reviewing our article on deciding where to travel as a travel nurse for some helpful ideas on forming a strategy.
Free: Universal Job Application and Credential Management for travelers.
Experience requirements are another issue that potential L&D travelers should be aware of. Many hospitals have very specific requirements. For example, some hospitals require experience with high risk deliveries. Others require 3-5 years of experience which is higher than the standard 1-2 years of experience for other specialties. And many rural facilities will require experience in a similar setting.
Moreover, different hospitals organize their L&D units in different ways. Some hospitals take an all-inclusive approach in which their L&D nurse might be responsible for Postpartum and Mother/Baby care. Others separate these care regimes from the L&D unit and assign different nurses to the various stages of the childbirth process. As a result, hospitals tend to seek candidates with experience in units organized similar to their own. Of course, the stringency that hospitals exhibit with regard to their experience requirements will ebb and flow with job market.
Labor and Delivery Travel Nursing Job License and Certification Requirements
License and certification requirements for L&D travelers tend to vary quite a bit. However, as with all specialties, it’s standard for hospitals to require that candidates be licensed in the hospital’s state prior to being submitted for an assignment. There are some exceptions, most often in states that have a walk-through licensing process, but these opportunities are rare.
In addition to the appropriate state RN license, L&D assignments almost always require NRP certification. BLS certification is another standard requirement. Others will require a PALS certification. And, believe it or not, it is becoming more and more common for L&D assignments to require ACLS certification. As always, your best bet is to attain all of these through the American Heart Association.
Negotiate travel nursing pay like a PRO with our free eBook.
Finally, more and more hospitals are requiring an AWHONN Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (AFHM) certification for their L&D nurses. This certification is pretty much a standard requirement in California and it is growing in popularity nationwide. The most important consideration regarding AFHM certification is that it can be difficult to obtain. AWHONN is certainly offering more certification classes these days, but it can still be difficult to find classes in certain locations. Moreover, there are a limited number of dates, and classes tend to fill quickly. Planning in advance for this certification is in your best interest.
It’s a good idea to obtain all the certifications listed here prior to starting your travel career. Landing the best assignments, and your most desired jobs, has a lot to do with being ready when the opportunity strikes. Having all of the certifications helps ensure that you are maximizing your potential with respect to the pool of available assignments at any given time.
Labor and Delivery Travel Nursing Pay
Labor and Delivery almost always falls under the “Specialty Bill Rate” category. This means it is in the category of specialties for which companies bill the hospital the higher rate specified in their contract. Moreover, there are some hospital/agency contracts that specify a specific rate just for L&D. This rate is typically a bit higher than the rest. However, none of this means that L&D travelers make tons more money than everyone else. The differences tend to be between $1 to $3 higher per hour.
As with bill rates for all specialties, there is a broad range from the lowest to the highest bill rates for L&D. Bill rates for L&D can range from roughly $54 per hour on the low end to roughly $75 per hour on the high end. It’s important to remember that lower bill rates are predominant in regions with a lower cost of living while higher bill rates are predominant in areas with a higher cost of living. However, there can be large variations within a specific region as well.

While the job market volatility for L&D travel nurses can present some problems, it’s also one of the reasons that the specialty tends to see the most crisis rates . When demand spikes, the surplus of available jobs relative to the number of L&D travel nurses in the market tends to force hospitals to initiate their crisis rates. These rates can be anywhere from $5 per hour to $20 per our higher than the normal rates. These rates tend to motivate recruiters to aggressively recruit for the openings. The rates also tend to persuade L&D nurses who might not otherwise be interested in the assignment to consider it.
As with all specialties, bill rates for L&D travel nurses tend to fluctuate with the labor market. When the labor market is tight (more jobs than people) rates can get forced up, and when it is slack (more people than jobs) it can get forced down. Overall though, bill rates for L&D travel nurses tend to be higher relative to most other specialties.
L&D Travel Nursing Job Considerations
Unit organization is perhaps the most important consideration that L&D travel nurses should account for when evaluating a potential assignment. As mentioned previously, different hospitals organize their L&D units in different ways. This means that some hospitals have their nurses focused on specific aspects of the process while others have their nurses involved with all aspects of the process.
You can attempt to find out about how the unit is organized prior to being submitted for an assignment. However, you should always inquire about it during the travel nursing job interview regardless of whether or not your recruiter has provided you with the information. This is because recruiters often rely on boiler plate unit descriptions provided by the hospital which offer very little detail. Moreover, recruiters and agencies are rarely able to contact the hospital unit directly to inquire about specifics. Therefore, recruiters are often uninformed about specific unit organization issues.
Free travel healthcare resume builder.
L&D travel nurses should also consider the type of hospital when evaluating an assignment. Specifically, is the hospital urban or rural? Rural hospitals tend to have lulls in births. However, they are still going to want the travel nurse to contribute during periods when there is no L&D work. Some rural hospitals will require floating to the Medical Surgical unit. Again, this is an issue you’ll want to address during your travel nursing interview.
L&D is an in demand specialty for. However, you’ll want to be sure that you have the appropriate licenses and certifications as well as flexibility in order to weather the down times in the overall L&D travel job market. In addition, always be sure to evaluate hospitals during the interview to ensure that their unit is a good fit for you.

The Best Traveling Nurse Services to Work for in 2024
The travel nursing agencies we recommend for your next short-term post
Traveling nurses often find working in different parts of the country, or even the world, exhilarating and fulfilling. Many agencies focus on matching registered nurses (RNs) with short-term working opportunities in a variety of healthcare specialties and settings across the United States and internationally. Healthcare facilities in the U.S. rely on travel nurses to meet the demand for nurses, which is expected to soar by 275,000 between 2020 and 2030.
"Being able to explore other healthcare systems and connect with other providers can help give a travel nurse new experiences and perspectives," says Rachel Norton , BSN, RN, a clinician support manager at Vivian Health , a national travel nurse hiring marketplace. We reviewed more than 20 agencies and studied hundreds of reviews to create this list of the best travel nursing agencies. We considered factors such as company quality, customer service scores, company reputation, wage ranges, housing options, and benefits.

RN to BSN tuition reimbursement
RN specialty exam/recertification reimbursements
Insurance coverage available on first day
Offers free mental health resources
Per diem guarantee
Unable to see pay rates on the site
Large agency size might feel less supportive
Travel Nurse Across America (TNAA) had the highest average score when analyzing the top 10 travel nurse agency lists across several well-known sites.

According to BluePipes, TNAA was among the top 10 travel nursing agencies, one of the biggest (in terms of company size) on its 2022 list.
TNAA uses a full-team approach to assist travelers, with specialty staff equipped to handle a variety of needs, including housing experts and clinical leadership, This agency also offers a wide array of benefits, such as low census pay, tuition reimbursement, and paid licensure fees prior to travel. Overtime is included in the payment for any extra hours worked and in every state, paid sick leave starts to accrue from day one.
TNAA also partnered with Aspen University, so individuals can get their Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 12 months. Upon completion, TNAA will even reimburse tuition expenses. It also offers reimbursements for recertification fees to certain eligible nurses.

Formed in Seattle, Washington, in 2004, Axis provides several coveted benefits, including payment of paid personalized housing options (with pet deposit costs covered by the agency), as well as immediate vesting in its company-matched 401(k) plan.
This agency regularly features a new Traveler of the Month nurse on its blog. Additionally, the Axis website has a page dedicated to Ask an Axis Travel Nurse , which features an easy submission form where a nurse can answer all your questions.
This encouraging way of connecting can provide novice or even seasoned travelers with a trusted source in the form of a nursing peer who has traveled with this specific agency several times, instead of hosting an impersonal message board. Axis also offers a live chat feature that's easily accessible on the homepage. These features earned Axis the top spot on BluePipes Best Travel Nursing Companies list in 2022.

Complaints of lower-paying contracts
Founded in 1998, RN Network has over two decades of experience in the travel nursing industry. Its experience shows in the company's user reviews, many of which highlight its great communication, support, and benefits.
The agency provides an impressive benefits package that includes day-one health insurance with a zero-premium option, as well as a 401(k) with company match, both traditional and Roth options. Offers a variety of housing options, including pet-friendly
24/7 support via multiple channels
COVID-19 quarantine pay available
Can’t view facility or pay without an account
Site lacks information on reimbursement offers
Founded in 2012, Host Healthcare is a travel healthcare staffing agency that works with some of the nation's top facilities. The company has earned multiple awards over the years, including being named one of the Top Travel Nursing Companies by BluePipes.
What sets Host Healthcare apart from other agencies are its recruiters, who are consistently praised by clinicians for their exceptional customer service. In reviews, nurses rave about their recruiters being responsive, receptive, and thorough in their onboarding and placement processes. The company also offers a variety of housing options, including pet-friendly ones, to ensure you have a comfortable place to call home while on assignment.
In addition to its comprehensive benefits package, which includes health insurance, dental, and vision coverage, Host Healthcare also offers a 401(k) with company match and COVID-19 quarantine pay. If your facility quarantines you due to possible COVID-19 exposure, the company will compensate you for the duration of your time off work.

- Pay: Hourly wage paid weekly, plus overtime, per diem, and bonuses
- Benefits: Health coverage, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, 401(k) with company match, short-term disability, travel and transportation per diem

Transparent information for each job posting
Nationwide network
Attentive recruiters
Competitive pay and benefits

Per diem reimbursements may be less convenient for expenses like travel
Past complaints from LGBTQIA employees
Fusion Medical Staffing urges applicants to "choose your own adventure." With thousands of travel nursing positions across the U.S. available on its website, Fusion will definitely give you a lot to choose from.
Founded in 2009 in Omaha, Nebraska, Fusion doubled its size by 2016. The company racked up awards from Inc., People, and Staffing Industry Analysts for being among the best places to work and is rated 4.7 out of 5 on Indeed.com .
Assignments through Fusion Medical typically run 13 to 26 weeks and are available across a broad spectrum of nursing specialties. We particularly like how transparent the pay, terms, and benefits for each opportunity are on Fusion's website.
But what really makes the company stand out is its recruitment. Fusion offers 24/7 support and many of its travel nurses rave about their attentive recruiters. Fusion has a new graduate traveling medical job program recruiting nurses who have just finished training. Most travel nursing agencies require at least two years of experience, so Fusion may be a great choice if you're about to finish school and eager to see the country or aren't sure of where you want to call home yet.
Of note: Some LGBTQIA+ travelers and employees have complained of inclusivity issues and unsupportive leadership. In 2021, the company published a blog post about forming an oversight group dedicated to LGBTQIA+ inclusivity and support and alluded to its efforts to "grow" and "learn."
Best Job Board : TotalMed
- Pay: Hourly wage paid weekly, plus overtime, bonuses, and guaranteed hours
- Housing: Company-provided housing or stipend

Some nurses complain of long onboarding process
Pay is competitive, but perhaps not the highest of any agency

TotalMed prides itself on placing nurses and other medical workers in new postings quickly and prioritizes assigning workers to places urgently in need of additional staff. It offers a standard array of benefits, plus a pay guarantee and a generous short-term disability policy that covers up to 12 weeks of injury or illness with up to 60% of your pay.
Some travel nurses have complained of a protracted onboarding process, but once the initial paperwork is out of the way, most seem very happy with the company's efficiency and the quality of its recruiters. Its pay may not always be the highest of any agency, but travel nurses working with TotalMed still enjoy the benefit of payment guarantees and the confidence that a new job will almost always be available, and fast. TotalMed also goes a long way to smooth out the transition process by organizing and covering the cost of any licensing and certifications its travel nurses may need, as well as offering reimbursement for pesky costs like new scrubs.
Even though some agencies on our list require account registration to access pay rates, each one offers competitive benefits and wages. Triage Staffing is our choice for best overall travel nursing agency because of its positive reviews, superior customer service, and competitive wages. Day one 401(k) and tuition reimbursement are just a few ways it provides long-term support for travelers.
Compare the Best Travel Nursing Agencies
Guide to choosing the best travel nursing agencies.
Travel nursing agencies are staffing agencies that place registered nurses and healthcare professionals in hospitals and clinics with short-term staffing needs. They often send individuals to national or international locations where there are nursing shortages.
Here are a few tips for choosing the best travel nursing agency to meet your needs.
Is a Travel Nursing Agency Right for You?
There are many advantages to working with a travel nursing agency in addition to the obvious benefit of being able to travel and explore new places. Some of the other advantages of working with a travel nursing agency include:
- Competitive pay: Travel nursing agencies offer competitive pay rates that are often higher than what you would make as a staff nurse and recruiters can help you find lucrative positions.
- Benefits : Health insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits are typically included in a travel nursing agency's compensation package.
- Housing: Travel nursing agencies often provide housing or help nurses find housing in their assignment location.
- Specialty assignments based on nursing field: Agencies can help place you in an assignment that matches your specialty, interests, and skills . Some facilities accept travelers into new specialties or a float pool that covers multiple units, as long as they have prior travel nursing experience. This is an added bonus for those who wish to explore new areas of nursing.
- Flexibility: Agencies offer a variety of assignment lengths and locations, so you can choose an assignment that fits your lifestyle.
- Perks and discounts : Free or reduced-cost continuing education courses, travel expenses, gym memberships, completion bonuses, and other perks are often available through travel nursing agencies.
How to Choose a Travel Nurse Agency
Consider the following when choosing a travel nursing agency:
- Average pay rates: Pay rate varies by agency, location, and assignment. Travel nurses often work with multiple agencies at the same time to find the best assignments and pay rates.
- Benefits package: Make sure the agency's benefits are comprehensive and meet your needs. Benefits may include health coverage , dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, 401K, vacation time, and education reimbursement.
- Housing options: Determine if the agency provides housing or assists with finding housing. Some nurses prefer to find their own housing, while others prefer the convenience of having the agency secure housing for them.
- Reputation: Check out online reviews and ratings to get an idea of the agency's reputation. Talking to other travel nurses who have worked with the agency is also a good way to get first-hand information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which travel nurses are most in demand.
Staffing agencies report that demand is high for critical care and medical-surgical nurses. Emergency room staff and labor and delivery staff are also in great demand.
Do Travel Nursing Agencies Pay for Housing?
Your agency will either have housing available for you or will reimburse you for your housing expenses. If you choose to secure your own housing, most agencies will give you a stipend to help offset the cost of rent and utilities. Talk with your agency recruiter about your housing options and what will work best for you.
How Long Are Travel Nursing Assignments?
Some travel nursing opportunities can be as short as eight weeks, while others can last for up to six months at a time. There are often options and offers to extend assignments, too.
What Experience Do You Need to Be Recruited by a Travel Nursing Agency?
Most agencies require new travelers to have recent experience as a nurse—meaning you can't become a travel nurse right out of nursing school. A year or two of experience is commonly required. A qualified nurse may also need more experience to work in the intensive care unit (ICU) or another specialty area.
Can Travel Nurses Choose Where They Work?
Yes, and that's generally a benefit of the job. Some agencies work to assign candidates throughout the United States, while others place travel nurses internationally. Before deciding to work with an agency, it makes sense to find out where they place travel nurses if you have a specific placement location in mind.
Methodology
We reviewed more than 20 agencies and studied hundreds of reviews from travel nurses around the country to identify the best travel nursing agencies. We then analyzed company quality and customer service scores across multiple sources to determine which companies are most reputable. Wages, housing options, and benefits were also a top priority. We reviewed the range of assignments, as well as the quantity and quality of each agency's listings in all 50 states.

Healthcare in Moscow
This guide was written prior to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is therefore not reflective of the current situation. Travel to Russia is currently not advisable due to the area's volatile political situation.
Healthcare in Moscow is organised by the Moscow Health Department. While public healthcare facilities are available, most expats seek out private healthcare at international medical centres. Expats are advised to take out private medical insurance if it is not provided to them by their company.
Subsidised healthcare is provided to everyone living in the country, paid for by the state and the mandatory health insurance system. That said, professionals in the state system are likely to speak little to no English.
There are several private medical centres in Moscow where English is spoken and where the healthcare is on par with expat standards. These clinics are generally very expensive, so it is highly recommended that expats take out private medical insurance to cover medical costs in Moscow. Most insurance coverage plans will also include evacuation cover for emergencies or life-threatening situations.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. How Safe Is Moscow for Travel?
On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.
This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…
At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.
Russia : Safety by City
- Nizhny Novgorod
- Novosibirsk
- Saint Petersburg
- Yekaterinburg
Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.
It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.
The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.
In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.
For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.
- Warnings & Dangers in Moscow
OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM
Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.
TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW
Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.
PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH
Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.
NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW
Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.
MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM
The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.
TERRORISM RISK: HIGH
After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.
SCAMS RISK: HIGH
There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.
WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW
Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.
- So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?
Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.
Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams, had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.
However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.
The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.
Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.
Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.
As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.
While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.
You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.
- How Does Moscow Compare?
- Useful Information
Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.
The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.
Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.
Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.
Travel Insurance
Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

9 Reviews on Moscow
That's just not true.
The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters
Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?
I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.
51% safe?! Is this out of date?
Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!
Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.
Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.
Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!
I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.
Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe
Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!
Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow
I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.
In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.
Written by someone who never visited Russia
A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.
Have never been there. But wish me well
Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!
This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.
