Moose Watching in the Rangeley Lakes Region

Moose are most likely spotted during late spring to mid-summer and the month of September. Early morning and evening and noon to 2 p.m. seem to be the best times of day for spotting these large animals while they eat a diet of woodland and aquatic vegetation (Up to 40 – 50 lbs. a day!). During your search, keep in mind the fact that a moose does have poor eyesight, but a very keen sense of hearing and smell. Also remember to stay away from cows (females) with calves in tow, and bulls (males) during “Rutting Season” as they are likely to charge the unwary tourist! Planning a moose safari? If you prefer a guided trip, Saddleback Mountain offers free moose watching tours during the summer months or book a couple of hours with one of Rangeley’s registered Maine guides.

Wondering Where to See Moose in Maine? Here are 5 great moose watching spots.

Moose are, of course, the state animal of Maine .

We’ll talk about some great places to see moose in Maine, and at the end of the post, we’ll share a few facts about their history in Maine.

A close up picture of a bull moose's head as he comes out of the water with water dripping off his antlers.

Where To See Moose In Maine: 5 Great Places For Moose Watching

Where are you most likely to see moose in Maine? The best places to see moose in Maine would be 📍 Greenville (Moosehead Lake area) and 📍 Rangeley (from my own experience). There are moose all around the state though, and often it’s just a matter of luck.

Here are some other great places where it is common to see moose in Maine. We’ve also included some options to make sure you see a (non-wild) moose in Maine!

Places With The Best Chance To See Moose

📍 Rangeley 📍 Eustis 📍 Moosehead Lake 📍 Baxter State Park 📍 Maine Wildlife Park

So, can you see moose in Maine? Yes. Will you see moose in Maine? If you’re lucky!

Moose are the quintessential wildlife icon of Maine. With their large, curious eyes and shy nature, they are instantly recognizable. While moose can be found throughout the state, there are several places where you are more likely to see these majestic animals on your visit.

Here is everything you need to know about seeing moose in Maine.

✳️ Moose Population In Maine

According to the official Maine state count, the Maine moose population is between 60,000 and 70,000. More moose live in Maine than in any other lower 48 states. Maine’s people population is 1.3 million. That means there is one moose for every 17-20 people in Maine!

✳️ Where Am I Most Likely To See Moose In Maine?

Moose like bogs and wetlands, that’s why most of the pictures you see of them are in the water. They prefer the mountain, western, and northern regions of Maine. Stick to the Highlands and western Maine if you have your heart set on seeing a wild moose.

Unfortunately, if you’re wondering where to see moose in Acadia National Park , you will be disappointed. You are highly unlikely to see a moose in Acadia National Park.

While the park is wild and beautiful, and probably a great home for moose, it is just too populated, with 3-4 million visitors each year.

Likewise the coast. If you are visiting Bar Harbor, your best bet would be to go on a moose safari (there are some listed below). Your guide will have a much better chance of finding moose for you than you will on your own.

If you are in the southern part of the state—which happens to be the most tourist-y outside of Acadia, you’ll need to do some traveling unless you visit a park

✳️ General Moose Map

A moose map of where to see moose in Maine.

These are the approximate locations of good places to see moose in Maine. As you can see, the western and central parts of the state are your best bets. The southern part of the state and the Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park are places you will probably not see a moose.

✳️ Where Is The Best Place To See A Moose In Maine?

There is never any guarantee that you will see a moose, even if the spot is well-known for that. I like to say that moose are not like lighthouses–they move around . They also try to avoid people.

( If you want to see lighthouses, you can find them here! )

Having said that, the places listed below are places where I’ve almost always seen moose.

Since moose like bogs and wetlands, finding places that are not highly populated, and that offer that environment, are would be the best place to see a moose in Maine.

As someone from Maine, my first two thoughts are: 📍 Rangeley (with its five lakes) and 📍 Baxter State Park (with its rugged, unpopulated nature).

✳️ Where To See Wild Moose

Moose watching in Maine is sort of like looking for a shooting star. With shooting stars, it has to be the right night and you have to be looking in exactly the right direction because the star is gone in a flash.

The same thing with moose watching in Maine. You have to be in the right place at the right time, looking in the right direction. As you can see by the video, once they’re spooked, they disappear almost as quickly as a shooting star!

It’s hard to comprehend because they are so huge, but they are there one second and gone the next.

✅ Try Your Luck On A Hike

Many of the best hiking spots are in unpopulated areas, so you may get lucky and see a moose while on your hike. I never have, but I didn’t spend that much time hiking in really unpopulated areas like Baxter State Park.

✅ Rangeley, Maine

I have seen moose at least 50% of the time I have driven Rt. 4 in Rangeley , and I was there a lot! You could take your vacation or long weekend getaway in Rangeley because there is plenty to do year-round . The longer you are there, the better your chances of seeing moose.

One time, after leaving Moose Alley pretty late, three moose crossed the road right in front of us ! We were in a Subaru wagon, and I have no doubt that the car would have been totaled by hitting any one of them.

One of my favorite places to see some great Maine musicians is Moose Alley, which offers bowling, pool tables, food, and live music. They also have a really cool round fireplace in the middle of the room.

Rangeley Lake is huge, and you can kayak there or rent a jet ski . There is plenty of hiking, snowmobiling , and skiing there as well, so if you are really set on seeing a wild moose, spend some time in Rangeley during your vacation.

✳️ Where To Stay In Rangeley, Maine

I’ve stayed at Rangeley Town & Lake many times. You can go for a basic room or rent a really great cottage,

Rangeley Town & Lake

Rangeley Town & Lak e can be the budget option, but they also offer very nice cabins if you want to spend a little more money on your stay. The motel is right on the lake, and they have kayaks you can use. I’ve stayed here numerous times and have always had a good experience.

You’ll also find a lot of fun things to do in Rangeley no matter the season. Here are my favorite things to do in Rangeley.

✅ Eustis, Maine/Rt. 27

Pre-pandemic I drove this road several times each summer, and since I was heading to camp in Canada, I was usually driving to Canada early in the morning, and driving back in the evening. Both prime moose sighting times.

90% of the times I drove up past Eustis, I saw a moose, sometimes several. Maybe because it’s near Bigelow Preserve, or maybe it’s just the perfect habitat. They are everywhere here.

✅ Moosehead Lake

It’s called Moosehead Lake. 🙂 Ask anyone, and they can tell you where to see moose . Moose outnumber people in this area. I’ve had friends kayaking on the lake who have had moose swimming near them. It’s amazing, but scary.

Moose on the side of the road in Maine

The area is also a great place for a vacation if you want to be able to relax and enjoy the more wild side of Maine. There are cool restaurants and bars in the center of town, but a few minutes away you are surrounded by quiet and nature. It’s extra beautiful, even by Maine standards.

Greenville Inn at Moosehead Lake

Several photos of the Greenville Inn.

Not only is the Greenville Inn at Moosehead Lake beautiful, but you are also just a short walk away from anything you might want. You can head for a lake tour, go downtown where you’ll find many restaurants to choose from, or even head over to a guide service to get some help finding moose.

✅ Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is amazing! It is wild and rugged and incredibly beautiful . You have a very good chance of seeing moose here. Even though it’s a park, it’s not nearly as popular as Acadia, partly because it’s such a long drive, I think.

Baxter is so rugged and wild, that it is the first place that I ever saw a sign warning people about deer. Deer can actually be pretty dangerous, apparently. Anyway, this is another great place to see moose in Maine.

Baxter Park Inn

The Baxter Inn.

You’ll be about 30 minutes from Baxter State Park, and within walking distance of shops and restaurants in downtown Millinocket. Guests have rated it 4.1/5, with cleanliness and staff helpfulness always getting great ratings.

✅ Moose Safaris & Tours In Maine

If you want to really increase your odds, consider a moose safari . Trained guides will take you out to the most likely spots to see a moose. Sure, you could drive around randomly, but if you are on vacation, who has time for that?

You will have a couple of options. There are private moose safaris if you want to go only with your family and friends, which, for some, may offer a more comfortable experience.

Then, there are group tour moose safaris , where whoever books the tour shows up, and you could be with strangers.

Here are a few places that offer safaris:

✅ Wildlife Park

Lastly, you could visit the Maine Wildlife Park . Here you will definitely see a moose. All of these animals have been rehabilitated from injuries and/or are unable to survive in the wild. The highest entry fee is $10.

It’s a beautiful park, and your admission helps support the work they do with Maine animals that need medical attention and a safe place to live out their lives. Win-win.

✳️ The Best Time Of Day To See Moose In Maine

Moose tend to like dusk and dawn , although I’ve seen them in the middle of the day and pretty late at night. It’s really hard to pin down the best time to see one.

However, if you are only visiting Maine, you will want to increase your odds by looking for moose at their favorite, times–dusk and dawn.

✳️ The Best Month & Time Of Year To See Moose In Maine

There is no particular best month to see moose in Maine, but there are several months that offer you a better opportunity to see them than other months.

Mid-May through July are good months because they are more likely to be taking advantage of all those great wetlands to feed.

Then, fall is breeding season, so they are out and about, sort of like like spring break for moose. Except in the fall.

✳️ How To See Moose In Maine

This is a little bit of luck and a lot of preparation. You could be super lucky and see a moose in the road; it happens. You could also hang out where moose have been seen before, and hope to see one.

If a moose is on the side of the road, you might have a brief chance to grab your camera and get a good shot. For huge animals, often with giant antlers, they can disappear into the woods like magicians.

Have your camera ready anytime you are in moose country if you want a decent roadside picture. You really have to keep your eyes open, looking at the sides of the roads you are driving.

If you are near wetlands, you might get lucky enough to see one in the water as they feed on aquatic plants in the summer. Again, keep your distance; but unless you spook them, moose will likely just continue doing what they were doing. They won’t automatically run away as deer do.

On my favorite moose-sighting road in Eustis, I once saw a juvenile moose just hanging around on the side of the road drinking from a puddle. He was there for probably 10 minutes, and there was a line of cars pulled over trying to get pictures. I had never seen anything like it.

Flashing warning sign about moose crashes in Maine.

✳️ Think Safety

Moose are amazing, and they seem like calm nice animals, like cows. Mostly, they are. However, they are still unpredictable wild animals ! I know you want to get out of your car and get closer for a great photo op. Don’t do it! One time, near Jackman (a great place to see a moose, by the way), we saw a cow with two calves. A crazy rarity! My mother literally got out of the car to try to get closer. NO! I know it’s tempting, but keep your wits about you and stay safely in or near your vehicle .

Moose, like grizzly bears and polar bears (and probably other large animals), can run 35mph . Don’t stray too far from your vehicle!

If you are in moose territory, be extra careful driving during dusk and dawn when they are most likely to be out. Apparently, one of the things they love is salt from the roads. They are also not speedy like deer, and just wander across the road in no rush .

Remember, a moose can be seven feet tall and 1,000 to 1,500 pounds . It can total your car, put you in the hospital, and walk away a little shook up. They are massive animals.

Some really cute moose made out of logs that I saw at a hardware store. There are moose in everywhere in Maine!

✳️ Fun Facts

➡️ Moose stand up to seven feet tall. ➡️ Moose can weigh nearly 1,500 pounds. ➡️ Moose tracks are 5”-7” long. ➡️ They need almost 10,000 calories a day to maintain their weight. ➡️ ‘Shed’ hunting isn’t about a building. It’s when people look for the antlers the male (bull) moose shed in the winter*️*️ ➡️ Moose antlers can be HUGE. Huge like six feet across huge! ➡️ During the growing season, antlers can grow up to one inch per day. They are actually the fastest growing tissue in mammals. ➡️ The moose is the state mammal of Maine . ➡️ Moose can live up to 25 years.

*️*️Wondering where to find moose sheds in Maine? The higher elevations where moose spend the winter are good spots. Here are some mountains in Maine, and here is an expert from NH talking about the best spots.

✳️ Can You See Moose In Bar Harbor?

It’s highly unlikely that you will see any moose in Bar Harbor or even at Acadia National Park, which seems like it would be a great spot. Those areas are much too populated. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

☑️ Moose were almost hunted to extinction in Maine! ☑️ An adult moose in Maine has no natural predators. Learn more about the history of moose in Maine and why they were chosen as the Maine state animal.

The odd moose will get disoriented and end up in unlikely places. They occasionally wander into towns, and on rare occasions, can end up in Bar Harbor or Acadia. Don’t count on it though. However, when I lived 300 miles above the Arctic Circle, a tundra moose wandered up there! Stranger things have happened than seeing a moose in Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park!

So, for the most part, the answer to “are there moose in Bar Harbor?” or “are there moose in Acadia,” is no. Sorry. It would be awesome if there were.

✳️ Where To See Moose In Southern Maine

Unfortunately, southern Maine is not prime moose-spotting territory. However, you could visit Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. The wildlife park saves animals that have been injured or for some other reason cannot live in the wild anymore.

It’s a beautiful park, and while not wild, it’s still a moose and still awesome to see.

✳️ Why Do Moose Shed Their Antlers?

Since antlers are mainly needed as an advantage for reproduction, once the breeding season is over, they are no longer needed, so the bulls shed them. Female moose view larger antlers as a sign of physical health, and will choose to breed with males with the largest antlers.

Searching for where to see moose in Maine? You’ve come to the right place! Maine has the second-highest moose population in the United States (right behind Alaska) and there are several ways you can put yourself in a position to catch a glimpse of the majorly majestic Maine moose.

Table of Contents

Moose in Maine

They are most active around dawn and dusk, so head out early or at the end of the day to optimize your chances of seeing a Maine moose.

The best time to see Moose in Maine is May-July, and in fall when they mate.

They are great swimmers and love to hang out in swampy, boggy areas, but during the cold season, you may just find a moose licking the salt off of the roads!

Be extremely cautious driving, especially at night. Moose are massive creatures and because they are so tall, the reflection in their eyes from headlights is not as easily seen at night as it is with deer. They also tend to meander slowly across roads, so don’t count on them being able to dodge your vehicle!

There are moose sightings reported all around Maine, but you aren’t likely to see a moose in certain areas, like Acadia National Park . That’s okay, because if you’re looking for where to see moose in Maine, you’ll see there are several ways to increase the chances of coming across one of these interesting creatures.

Best Maine Moose Tours

Female moose with baby moose

Several outdoor organizations offer Maine moose safaris with an experienced guide that will show you safely around areas that moose are frequently sighted. The major advantage of a moose safari is that there is someone to lead you to where you are most likely to spot a moose and to teach you how to do it safely. Don’t forget, these are wild animals that weigh between 800-1100lbs with antlers that can grow up to 6-feet wide; you do not want to get too close!

Northwoods Outfitters Moose Safaris

Northwoods Outfitters in Greenville offers highly rated Maine moose safaris both on water and land with their knowledgeable guides that know how to get you close enough for an incredible picture, yet distant enough for maximum safety. You can join a group tour or commission a private safari, but either way Northwoods Outfitters’ guides are known for adapting each safari to ensure that you have an incredible moose tour experience.

In addition to moose safaris, Northwoods Outfitters offers plenty of other outdoor activities to get you outside where you might just have a chance encounter with a moose. They rent ATVs, bikes, canoes, kayaks, snowmobiles, and snowshoes, so there are plenty of options to explore the beauty of Maine and its wildlife with Northwoods Outfitters.

Northeast Whitewater Moose Tours

Northeast Whitewater in Shirley Mills is one of the area’s most beloved outdoor activity one-stop-shops. Moose tours are available both via water and land, and spots fill up quickly so reservations are required 30 days in advance.

Northeast Whitewater has a wide array of outdoor activity options, including whitewater rafting , ice cave excursions , stand up paddle-boarding , bird-watching , and even a guided tour to the B52 crash site on Elephant Mountain. Getting active outside in the Maine Highlands is an excellent way to put yourself in the position of happening upon a moose.

Twin Maple Outdoors Moose Safari Adventures

Another top rated Maine outdoor adventure company is Twin Maple Outdoors , and in addition to their moose safari offerings, they also lead guided recreation adventures for kayaking, hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, and more.

One of their most popular outdoor adventures, of course, is their Moose Safari Adventures . You can choose to tour by water or land, and other adventures can be added to the tour as well if you’d like to fish or swim a little while on your moose tour.  These are all day tours that include a picnic lunch break, and the guides at Twin Maple Outdoors get rave reviews for their knowledge about Maine wildlife and natural history.

Moosehead Area Guide Services Moose Watching Tours

One of the best place to see moose in Maine is the Moosehead Lake region, where it is said moose outnumber people 3 to 1! Not only will you have a great shot of seeing Maine moose at Moosehead Lake, but joining one of the Moosehead Area Guide Services Moose Watching Tours almost ensures (no moose tour guide will ever guarantee, of course) that you will see one of these neat creatures.

Plus, Moosehead Lake is just a cool place to visit all around.

Where to See Moose in Maine while Hiking

There is no doubt that the Pine Tree State has some of the most beautiful hiking trails in North America, and most of them have some potential for moose sightings. Moose cannot see very long distances, but they do have incredibly sharp hearing, so the quieter, less congested trails will have more potential for a moose encounter.

Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park in Millinocket has 215 miles of trails to choose from, including trails that lead to Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in the state. As glorious as the payoff is for reaching the summit, it is a very advanced and strenuous hike and takes between 8-12 hours, depending on which trail you take up.

If this does not sound like something you are interested in, don’t worry! Baxter State Park officials provide a list of several intermediate-easy hike options , and “Moose Passes” (a 3-hour parking pass, the parking lot fills up VERY fast) for Sandy Stream Pond , where moose sightings happen often, as long as you approach quietly and don’t scare them off.

Scopan Mountain Trail

Scopan Mountain Trail is located near Presque Isle in Aroostook County and is considered an intermediate hike. The hike is only 3.5 miles total but packs a punch with a marshy wetland area that attracts moose and other wildlife that come to feast on the aquatic plants found there. The trail also has views of Alder Lake, where you might just catch sight of a moose taking a swim! Just as with all moose sightings in Maine, you will have a far better chance of seeing moose in the wild if you can travel quietly and lightly.

Bull Moose

Visit the Maine Wildlife Park

The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray is home to over 30 species of Maine wildlife that have come to the park after being injured, orphaned, or unable to return to the wild for some other reason. This is the only 100% guaranteed way to see a moose in Maine (or a black bear, a cougar, a coyote, a bald eagle, and many more). The park also offers presentations and demonstrations for the public throughout the week, so be sure to check out what events are happening during your visit.

Where to Drive to See Moose in Maine

If you ask where to see moose in Maine, there are plenty of places where you are likely to see them either by or on the road! Always use caution while driving in Maine and be on the lookout for moose and all wildlife. It is a possibility that you might see a moose either off in the distance or perhaps even making its way across the road ahead of you anywhere in the state, but you are very likely to spot a moose while driving in one of these regions below.

Kennebec and Moose River Valley

US Route 201 is referred to as Old Canada Road Scenic Byway or “Moose Alley,” and is the perfect moose habitat because it is surrounded by lakes , rivers, ponds, and wetlands. Keep your eyes peeled for both the beautiful scenery and the occasional Maine moose that may be grazing on the side of the road!

Aroostoo k County

Aroostook County is one of the best regions in Maine to spot moose. US Route 11 between Ashland and Patten is known for both its spectacular views of Mount Katahdin and the likelihood that you will see at least one moose alongside the road during your drive.

Other Aroostook County drives known for their moose sightings are US Route 161 Caribou to Fort Kent, and US Route 1 Caribou to Van Buren, where it is said that not only are you likely to see a moose, chances are you will see at least 2!

Rangeley Lakes Region

Rangeley Lakes Region is home to 6 large lakes, so there is lots of moose activity here! Some of the most oft-cited routes to see moose are Route 4 between Phillips and Rangeley, and Route 16 Rangeley to Stratton, but there is an entire list of Rangeley Lakes Region routes that are known for their moose sightings if you’d like some more options.

There are plenty of opportunities to see moose in Maine; wherever you go, have fun looking for Maine moose!

Experiencing a Moose Safari in Maine

The Maine official state animal is the Moose. Many visitors come to Maine in search of the big moose and never find him (male Bull moose) or her (female Moose cow). Well, maybe they aren’t looking in the right places at the right time a Moose safari may be your best bet at spotting one of these majestic, odd and awesome creatures.

In Maine, Moose are not too hard to find, but you do need to know where to look. The Moose is the largest wild animal in North America, typically weighing 1,000 plus pounds.

moose-safari

A Moose are the largest member of the deer family, and are often over 7 feet tall. Male moose have antlers that can grow to 5-feet across and weigh 40 lbs. Maine is home to the healthiest moose population (aside from Alaska), with an estimated 75,000.

A Moose Safari is the best way to be sure you see a Moose during Maine vacation getaway. The best moose spotting occurs in the early morning and early evening, dawn and dusk, just before sunset when moose are out searching for food.

Registered Maine guides lead the professional moose tours in the  Rangeley ,  Kennebec ,  Katahdin and Moosehead regions , to name a few. On your moose safari, you are also likely to see deer, bear, bald eagles, osprey and more.

North Country Rivers Cabins

Moose safaris and wildlife tours near Rangeley, Greenville and Jackman can last for a few hours with a Moose tour company, or continue as an overnight moose camping trip or entire weekend at a moose safari lodge.

maine-moose

But be careful around moose if you find one (or two, since moose cows are often accompanied by their moose calves), moose car collisions are a serious concern in Maine since moose tend to wander into roads during dawn and dusk.

moose-calves

Moose are reputed to have lousy eyesight and are typically slow to move. But if they are harassed (or if it’s moose mating season), moose can run up to 35 mph and be very aggressive. And they can weigh a ton – literally!

The Maine moose  hunting season  is limited and controlled by the Wildlife department each fall, with just 2,700 permits issued each year (and a 95% success rate amongst Maine moose permit holders).

The VisitMaine.Net team is the small team of authors and editors that research and write our in-depth guides throughout the site and update past articles to make sure they're still super valuable to you. We have one goal: to help you fall more in love with the state of Maine!

  • Things To Do
  • Moose Watching

Maine is lucky enough to be one of only a few states in the U.S. that has a sizable moose population. State biologists estimate the Maine moose population to be around 75,000—that’s the largest concentration of moose in the country next to Alaska.

For many visitors, catching a glimpse of the iconic Maine moose is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They are majestic to watch, and it’s always exciting to capture one on film. Did you know that a mature bull moose can easily tip the scales at 1,000 pounds or more, and their antlers span an average of six feet?

Best Viewing Times & Spots

Moose can be seen throughout the state, but their population is greatest in the Western Lakes and Mountains , The Kennebec Valley , The Maine Highlands , and Aroostook County . The best times to spot them are at dusk and dawn from mid-May through July and again in the fall during their breeding season. Fall is also when the impressive antlers of the Bull Moose are fully formed. They will shed their antlers in November or December and new, larger antlers will begin to grow in the spring.

Because of their massive size, moose find it easier to move about in open areas – making it fairly easy to catch sight of one if you are fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time. They can often be spotted along logging roads, diving for dinner in wet boggy areas, hanging out in gravel pits, and clip-clopping down hiking or snowmobile trails.

Moose Tours & Safaris

To increase your chances of seeing a moose in Maine, contact one of the outfitters that specialize in moose watching tours, also known as moose safaris. You’ll have the opportunity to safely and comfortably view these magnificent creatures, and other wildlife that might be encountered along the way, as you learn about moose habits and habitat from a knowledgeable guide. At the right time of year, tourists on Maine moose tours in some regions can spot as many as 20 moose in one outing.

Use Caution

While the moose in Maine are usually docile animals, please resist the temptation to approach a moose too closely. They have been known to charge people when they feel threatened. If you spot a cow with her young or a bull during breeding season, give them a wide berth.
