Boxing Day: How People around the World Celebrate December 26
Many people around the world spend Christmas day giving gifts, singing songs, and celebrating with loved ones. But the fun doesn’t always stop there—in some countries, December 26 is a public holiday known as Boxing Day. This year, why not incorporate this winter holiday into your family’s fun by trying some Boxing Day traditions from faraway places?
Boxing Day: Where Does It Come From?
The exact origins of Boxing Day aren’t certain, but some historians believe the holiday draws inspiration from the Christian festival of St. Stephen’s Day. St. Stephen was one of the first deacons of the early Christian church in Jerusalem in the first century. Because he was known for helping the poor, churchgoers who celebrated St. Stephen’s Day in Western Christianity would spend December 26 performing charitable acts for the less fortunate.
While St. Stephen’s Day is a public holiday in just a few countries today, its spirit of generosity has influenced its successor, Boxing Day, which is primarily celebrated in countries that were previously part of the British Empire.
One of the more well-known traditions of this holiday began in England when Queen Victoria reigned in the 1800s. On December 26, wealthy landowners would bring gifts of food or other necessities to people who worked for them. Some believe these “Christmas boxes” gave the holiday its name, while others say it was inspired by collection boxes put out by churches during Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Churches collected money from their congregation in these boxes throughout the holiday season and distributed the funds to the poor on December 26.
The true beginning of Boxing Day might be lost to history, but many countries still use the occasion to spread goodwill and positivity the day after Christmas.
Boxing Day Traditions
England, hong kong, and canada.
Since a number of people don’t have to attend work or school the day after Christmas, stores in many countries now have big sales on December 26, similar in scale to Black Friday in the U.S. For folks in England, Hong Kong, and Canada, Boxing Day is a chance to spend holiday gift cards and hunt for bargains—if, of course, you’re not too tired from Christmas celebrations.
If you visit the Bahamas on Boxing Day, you may see residents participating in one of the more lively Boxing Day traditions: a festival called Junkanoo. While its origins are unknown, most believe it comes from West African traditions and that it was born when an African chief named John Canoe, enslaved and brought to the Bahamas, demanded that he and his people be allowed to celebrate.
Junkanoo dates to the seventeenth century and has become more elaborate over time. In its early years, enslaved people celebrated it by coating their faces with flour and dressing in simple costumes. Face coating evolved into wearing masks, and people eventually began to decorate their costumes with the layers of colorful crepe paper for which the event is now famous.
These days, Junkanoo has become one of the biggest celebrations in the country. People wear magnificent costumes, masks, and headdresses to dance, sing, and play music through the streets in an enormous parade. They work on their parade floats for months, award-winning floats and costumes are displayed in museums, and thousands of people participate.
New Zealand
Because it’s located in the Southern Hemisphere, much of New Zealand celebrates Boxing Day in warmer weather. Outdoorsy families choose to go swimming in the ocean or hike with a picnic. Families who want to stay home and take it easy after holiday celebrations flip on the television to watch cricket and barbecue up some delicious food. Others head off to watch horse racing at the Ellerslie Boxing Day Races. These horse races have been held on Boxing Day at the Auckland Racing Club for more than 160 years.
No matter what they decide to do, most New Zealanders agree that Boxing Day is a day to rest and enjoy spending time with your loved ones.
In Australia, many Boxing Day traditions are focused on sports. On the day after Christmas, Australians hold a number of sporting events to watch with friends and family. Some tune in to the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and other national cricket teams, while others cheer on sailors competing in the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race, thought to be one of the most challenging yacht races in the world. And if you’re not into sports, no worries—you can always have a barbecue at home with your friends and family.
Embrace the Gift of Giving Back
Incorporating international holiday traditions into your family’s celebrations is a wonderful way to get your children interested in other places and cultures. This December 26, if you have the means, why not embrace the charitable spirit thought to be behind Boxing Day?
Things You Could Do for Others on Boxing Day
- Cook meals for those in need: A wonderful way to help others on Boxing Day is to cook a meal with your kids for someone who needs one. Whether you’re cooking for a neighbor who couldn’t be with family for the holidays, a family you know that has fallen on hard times, or a friend recovering from an illness or injury, this is a lovely way to show them you care. Get creative and make them something extra special, like a traditional holiday dish .
- Spend time with animals: Boxing Day isn’t just about helping other people—you can also use this day to give extra care and attention to animals in your community. Animal shelters often need donations such as pet food, litter, blankets, and toys. Ask your local shelter what your family can do to help.
- Send flowers or chocolates to someone special: Sometimes, the best way to help others is to simply let them know you’re thinking of them. Sending a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates to a family member, friend, or someone else your children cares about can brighten their day and make the holiday season a little more magical. Help your kids make a special card or a DIY gift to make the gesture even more special.
But no matter how you choose to celebrate, remember the spirit of the holiday is giving to others. Remind your children to be charitable with their time and love—and have a wonderful Boxing Day!

What to expect in the Boxing Day travel sales from Tui, British Airways, Jet2 and more
Savvy sunseekers could save hundreds on their next summer getaway

If the chilly Christmas weather has got you down, how about booking a break in the sun to look forward to?
January is historically the busiest month for holiday bookings as sunseekers take advantage of cut-price deals by planning their holiday getaways early in the year. With sales in full swing on flights, holidays and hotels, the deals can be top-notch with discounted prices and plenty of added extras including low deposits, free child places and upgrades.
While we are still waiting to hear confirmation on exactly what kind of deals we can expect to see go live on Boxing Day, previous discounts should give us a good idea.

We'll keep you up to date as the deals start to drop, but before you book your holiday day, keep in mind that cheaper deals could be coming.
British Airways
British Airways is one of the first out of the blocks this Christmas, having launched their big annual sale on December, 20.
The flag carrier is offering discounts on flights and holiday packages across the globe, including cut-price seats on selected routes to Europe and seven-night holiday packages to holiday hotspots including Malta , Algarve and Malaga starting from just £249 per person .
There are also return flights to New York from £356, Orlando from £386 and San Francisco from £415, as well as a range of Avios offers in place for customers to reduce the price of their ticket even further.
Find out more about the British Airways and British Airways Holiday deals here .
Booking.com
Last year Booking.com offered 15% off selected stays as part of their Boxing Day deals. For Black Friday however, they ramped that up to an impressive 30% off accommodation.
We would expect to see somewhere between the two in this year's Boxing Day sales.
When it comes to flying with easyJet , passengers can expect to see money off deals on thousands of flights across Europe and beyond, including seats for less than £20 one way.
In previous years, the budget brand has dropped their Boxing Day deals as early as December, 23, with up to £200 off beach holidays , city breaks and more.
For Black Friday 2022 EasyJet almost broke the internet by offering over 60,000 seats under £25. While it would be brilliant to see those types of deals appearing on Boxing Day, we'll have to keep our eyes peeled to see what discounts await.
Another great website that offers awesome deals on travel and accommodation, Expedia offered up to 30% off selected stays last year.
We would hope to see the same again in 2023.
First Choice
First Choice regularly runs promotions and discounts throughout the year. In preparation for the big rush of summer bookings that take place after Christmas , the travel agent is expected to offer the usual incentives including free child places, low-cost deposits, payment options and money off holiday spends.
During the Black Friday sales, First Choice offered up to £250 off holidays costing more than £2500 and reduced the price of thousands of getaways, starting from as little as £190 per person.
This Christmas we would expect to see more of the same, with great deals to be found on short-haul beach breaks to long-haul adventures in Orlando, Florida, Mexico and more.
Can't wait until Boxing Day to book? First Choice has some super cheap deals on last-minute winter sun holidays departing in January. Prices start from as little as £194 per person for seven nights in Turkey .
Budget airline Jet2 and Jet2Holidays have already introduced some brilliant winter deals with 10% off flights departing between now and March 31, while holidaymakers could save between £100 and £220 on their winter hols. They are also making it easier to pay with pay monthly and pay in three options available.
Last year, the popular travel agent added an extra exciting element to their seasonal specials by running their ‘Bid for a Break’ campaign on Boxing Day. Giving holidaymakers the chance to pay just a few pence for a 5-star, all-inclusive holiday for just a few pence, customers should download the Jet2 mobile app, make their bid and cross their fingers that it is the lowest unique bid to win.
It would be great to see those sort of deals appear once again this year.
Lastminute.com
As a purveyor of cheap deals all year round you may not expect much from Lastminute.com in the Boxing Day sales but last year they pulled it out of the bag with some impressive flash sales from Christmas through to January.
As the name would suggest, most of the best deals can be found on getaways departing shortly.
Loveholidays
Online travel agent Loveholidays has built its reputation on providing super cheap holiday deals, opening up the world to holidaymakers on all budgets.
As part of its previous winter sale discounts, passengers could enjoy an additional 15% off selected hotels in destinations such as Corfu, Majorca, the Canary Islands and the Algarve.
While Ryanair seems to have lots of "sales" throughout the year, some of their best deals can be found in the winter sale.
Always one to watch out for, previous years have seen some cracking deals such as 10 million seats on offer for as little as £29.99, and buy one get half price deals for cheaper adventures with your bestie.
Black Friday with Ryanair was full of fun too with different deals dropping over a series of days to entice flyers to buy. Previously, we have even seen a BOGOF deal that saw two passengers take to the skies for the price of just one ticket, with the best deals focusing on winter and springtime departures.
Speaking of winter sun, Ryanair is currently offering 10% off selected flights to some of our favourite holiday hotspots including flights to Spain, Italy and Portugal from just £14.99
Secret Escapes
Members-only website Secret Escapes offers long-haul holidays at low prices. With offers regularly updated, there are likely to be even more discounts available over the Christmas and New Year period.
Thomas Cook
Last year Thomas Cook offered some heavily discounted deals with hundreds of pounds off trips to destinations including Mexico, Barbados, the Canary Islands and Egypt. Deals were available on holidays throughout the year, with the sale prices ending on January, 31.
For Black Friday, Thomas Cook broke out some impressive deals offering as much as 30% off last-minute getaways, summer holidays for 2024, city breaks and long-haul adventures.
The TUI Live Happy sale is now live with £100 off spend of £1000 and £250 off bookings costing more than £2500 on summer holidays across Europe and beyond. Customers who sign up for a myTUI account here , could alternatively choose to save £300 on selected long-haul holidays using a unique code.
Selected holidays can be booked with £0 deposits, with the cost of the getaway spread across monthly Direct Debits. TUI is also promising to offer more 'Kids Go Free' places than ever before, even in the school holidays, helping to make dream holidays more affordable.
This year's sale also offers up to £300 off selected Marella Cruises and TUI River Cruises , depending on departure date and destination.
Virgin Atlantic
Virgin Atlantic has launched some big deals in their seasonal sale.
One of their finest offerings includes £60 per adult and £45 per child off prices to Orlando when you book between 18th December '23 - 31st March '24, for travel in 2024 - a saving of £210 for a family of 4. There are also good deals on flights with London to New York for £376 and London to Miami from £412 .
While Virgin will offer many similar deals to their flag-carrying rival, British Airways, they also have some unique routes to delicious destinations such as Havana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Shanghai.
Virgin Atlantic also offers non-stop routes from Manchester to Florida, New York, Barbados and Jamaica, making them more attractive to travellers from the north of England.
As another low-cost flight provider, Wizz Air usually fights off the competition by offering cheap deals in December and January.
In its "Pink Friday" promotion, the airline offered different deals every day for a week in 2022, delivering discounts on over 3 million seats flying to various destinations including Tenerife, Rome and Portugal.
Deal site Wowcher offers a wide range of cheap city breaks , holidays and mystery travel deals . Already great value for money, they traditionally slash prices even further on Boxing Day and into January.
Well suited to flexible travellers, you could grab a weekend away for as little as £99 per person. Sign up for the site and keep your eyes peeled.
Bargain buys for travellers in the Boxing Day sales
If you've already got your holiday sorted, the Boxing Day sales are the perfect time to find big deals on luggage and other travel essentials.
While there are many brands to choose from, some of the best deals we expect to see on suitcases and travel bags are likely to be delivered by the following retailers
- American Tourister
- House of Fraser
- Luggage Superstore
- Marks and Spencer
Online marketplace Amazon is also expected to have lots of lovely deals available for savvy travellers including reduced prices on suitcases , carry-on bags , travel tech , gadgets and so much more.
How to avoid being scammed in the Boxing Day travel sales
It can be very easy to get all over-excited about the idea of a cheap travel deal. To avoid being scammed stay safe and be wary of deals that look too good to be true.
The most common types of booking fraud are:
- Holiday Accommodation: Holidaymakers are conned by scammers setting up fake websites, hacking into legitimate accounts and posting fake adverts on websites and social media.
- Airline tickets: Customers believe they are booking a flight but are sent fake tickets or pay for a ticket that never turns up.
Before you hand over your hard-earned money on Boxing Day, make sure you consider the following:
Is the website legitimate?
Before you part with a single penny, do your research to ensure that the website is safe and legitimate. Many scammers make their fraudulent websites look so similar to big-name brands that you wouldn't even notice at first glance.
Ensure that the spelling is correct and that the domain names haven't been changed - such as going from co.uk to .org or other tell-tale giveaways. You should also check that there is an address and a working phone number as a lack of contact details could indicate a scam.
Read the reviews
Some companies pay people to write online reviews for them so never assume that lots of great feedback means any website is a safe bet. By asking Google to bring up reviews from across the internet you will be able to see more measured opinions and read about other people's experiences.
Look out for the ABTA or ATOL logo
Check to see that the company is ABTA or ATOL-protected before you book to ensure that you will be protected financially should anything happen.
According to the Money Saving Expert website "with ATOL, you can check it's legitimate by finding the reference number on it - this is usually four to five digits long and it may include a 'T' at the start - and then inserting this or the name of the travel company into the free ATOL database . Make sure you get an ATOL certificate when you book a protected trip.
"The process is the same for ABTA as it is for ATOL, so you just need to input the five-digit reference number or the company's name into the ABTA database ."
Protect how you pay
The safest way to pay for a holiday is by using a debit or credit card as they offer their own forms of protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Any company that asks for a payment to be made directly into a bank account or by a wire transfer could very likely be a scam.

What day do Boxing Day sales start?
Traditionally Boxing Day sales start and end on December 26th. However over time Boxing Day has evolved into a much larger event with deals running throughout December and into the beginning of January.
Does Apple have Boxing Day sales?
Apple itself doesn’t often have sales, however you can often find deals on sites that sell Apple products such as Amazon and The Good Guys .
3 tips to score the biggest bargains on Boxing Day
- Shop around. Hundreds of stores participate in Boxing Day annually and the beauty of shopping online is that you can compare prices in a flash. Before you hit the checkout, see if someone else is selling your item for less.
- Look for free shipping: We’ve all been there, abandoning our carts because something that was once affordable is now expensive because of delivery fees. Look for free shipping or minimum spend for free shipping deals to save yourself the heartache.
- Shop early. The best stuff always sells out early. Be the early bird that catches the worm and start looking as early as midnight.

Russian secrets? Here’s the ultimate Moscow itinerary
Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.
Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .
Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations
9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.
Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )
Related: 25 of Russia’s Natural and Cultural Treasures
9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .
The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.
Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .
11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.
2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.
The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . ( Trees that traveled to space now live on Earth. Here’s where to find them. )
7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.
Day 2: Fine art and food
10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.
1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.
7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?
Day 3: Markets and museums
10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.
Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.
1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .
8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.
Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.
Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.
The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.
A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour
A Brief Introduction
Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.
The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.
The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.
It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)
In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.
For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.
Facts: 14 lines Opening hours: 5 a.m-1 a.m. Rush hour(s): 8-10 a.m, 4-8 p.m. Single ride: 55₽ (about 85 cents) Wi-Fi network-wide
Buying Tickets
- Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
- You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
- There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
- Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
- If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
- You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
- You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
Rules, spoken and unspoken
No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.
Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)
Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.
Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).
An Easy Tour
This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.
Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring, Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.
1. Mayakovskaya. Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.
Take the 3/Green line one station to:
2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.
Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:
3. Novoslobodskaya. This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.
Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:
4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war. The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.
One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station, and change onto the 3/Blue line, and go one stop to:
5. Baumanskaya. Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.
Stay on that train direction one more east to:
6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.
Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:
7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.
Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.
8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.
Keep going one more stop west to:
9. Slavyansky Bulvar. One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.
Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:
10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.
Jump back on the 3/Blue line in the same direction and take it one more stop:
11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )
Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Three Marvelous Days in Moscow
April 3, 2017 by Robert Schrader 2 Comments
I’ll never forget the sense of anticipation I felt looking down onto Moscow as my flight from Warsaw descended, the city shrouded in the pitch black of early winter. The Russian capital had long been on my bucket list, and in just a couple of hours I’d be walking across Red Square toward St. Basil’s Cathedral, hopefully with some snow falling, to begin my 3 days in Moscow.
My Moscow itinerary lived up to all of my expectations. Well, except for one—I imagined a city as grand as Moscow would be difficult to comprehend in a short period of time, but that was not the case. Indeed, seeing Moscow in 3 days provided me a nuanced impression of the city, albeit one I want to build upon with future visits.
Where to Stay in Moscow
Moscow has a reputation as one of the most expensive cities in the world, which means it should be one of the most expensive cities in the world for hotels. Thankfully, at least as of early 2022, the Russian ruble is still very weak, which means that prices for even “nice” hotels in Moscow or comparable to or even lower than their counterparts in the rest of Europe.
If you’re looking for a boutique stay in Moscow, I recommend the Stoleshnikov Boutique Hotel ; otherwise, the city is full of hostels and budget hotels that will serve you during your three days in Moscow itinerary.
How to Divide Up Your 3 Days in Moscow
Day 1: moscow 101.
Although Moscow is a sprawling metropolis, many of the city’s key attractions are centralized—namely, around Red Square , located just north of the Moskva River . The obvious sights here include the impressive Kremlin and iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral but extend north, to the Bolshoi Theatre and also southward, to the river itself and the dramatic vistas the bridges over it provide.
To be sure, you should spend most of your first of three days in Moscow in close proximity to Red Square, in spite of how much more geographical ground there is to discover. Punctuate visits to important points of interest by getting an ice cream at the grandiose GUM department store, or treat yourself to a panoramic view of central Moscow by heading up to the roof of Children’s World department store.
Day 2: Beyond Red Square
Your strategy changes on the second of your Moscow 3 days itinerary, when your focus broadens. How this happens, of course, may vary. If it’s art and culture you’re after, for example, you might make a visit to the Russian State Library and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts . For architecture, you could visit less-celebrated Moscow churches such as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior , make a tour of the so-called “Seven Sisters” (a.k.a. Stalin’s Skyscrapers ) or even ride the Moscow Metro to Moscow City , which is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe.
Moscow is also home to a great number of green spaces, most notably the massive Gorky Park , but most dramatically VDNKh —located near the base of the Ostankino TV Tower , it features monuments to all the former Soviet republics. Tverskaya Street , a thoroughfare that extends northward from Red Square.
Day 3: Exploring the Golden Ring
Moscow is large and full enough of things to do that you could remain in the city center for the entirety of your third of Moscow 3 days, but I recommend traveling instead out into the so-called “ Golden Ring ” of historical cities around it. Well-known cities include Suzdal , Vladimir and Kostroma , and are all defined by colorful and well-maintained kremlins, which feature dramatic and picturesque churches and other structures that will be highlights of your Moscow 3 day itinerary.
If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, the easiest Golden Ring city to see as part of your 3 days in Moscow itinerary is Sergiyev Posad , which is accessible via direct suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station —the journey time is about one hour. Sergivey Posad’s Kremlin is not only picturesque (my Russian friend commentated that one church within it, Mikheevskaya Tserkov , is “Russia’s Sistine Chapel”) but is a great place to enjoy a traditional, filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the dumpling house Varenichnaya . Both sweet vareniki filled with sour cherries, or hearty potato and chicken pelmeni will fuel you as you explore Moscow in three days.
Is 3 Days Enough in Moscow?
I can’t lie: This Moscow itinerary is packed full, even by my standards. You’ll have to wake up early every morning and sleep late every night in order to fit it all in, to say nothing of how much more difficult it will be if you travel to Russia in winter like I did (more on that in just a few paragraphs).
Of course, whether you pare down my recommendations to a more appropriate curation of Moscow in 3 days or can devote 5 days or even a week to Moscow from the outset, one thing is for certain: Moscow is far more beautiful and dynamic than the Soviet reputation that precedes it would suggest.
Other FAQ About Travel to Moscow
How much money do i need per day in moscow.
Depending on the exchange rate, you can expect to spend anywhere between 75-200 USD per person, per day in Moscow. How much you spend also depends whether you’re traveling individually or as part of a couple or group, how many meals per day you enjoy in restaurants (versus on the street/in shops) and the relative luxury or simplicity of the Moscow hotel you choose.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
The good news? You can get by only speaking English in Moscow, particularly in the immediate and heavily-touristic center of the city. The trick? While English-language signage is increasingly common, and while you may not need to speak Russian, being able to read the Cyrillic alphabet will make your time in Moscow (and in Russia more broadly) a great deal smoother.
When is the best time to visit Moscow?
Traveling to Russia during colder months not only forces you to move slower (and look less stylish—well, for most of us) as you explore what to see in Moscow in 3 days, but the lack of daylight can make it difficult to squeeze everything into a particular day, and even to stay awake. The good news? Summer, while not necessarily as iconic as winter, is an absolutely gorgeous time to visit Moscow.
The Bottom Line
Is a Moscow itinerary 3 days in length enough? Although Moscow is a huge, sprawling city, you don’t need a huge amount of time to get to know it. Spend day one exploring Red Square and surrounds, day two exploring Moscow’s secondary attractions and day three taking a day trip into the so-called “Golden Ring.” You’ll get a colorful impressive of Moscow—and, more importantly, a nice introduction for your trip to Russia , since it will likely start here.
