Things to do in Wachau Valley Day Trip Itinerary

We stayed in Vienna for a few days and decided to visit the nearby Wachau Valley.

We say nearby because – a 1-hour drive is not a LONG drive for us. We hopped on private transportation from our Viena hotel and arrived in Melk.

wachau valley day trip from vienna

The weather was overcast and was slightly rainy that day. This made the valley even more beautiful and serene. We visited the Wachau Valley in March, and the tourist season had yet to pick up. This allowed us to take many pictures in Melk Abbey and spend ample time there.

We recommend the Melk Abbey as your first stop on the day trip itinerary, followed by the gardens and Old Town exploration. After lunch, opt for a river cruise (with or without wine tasting) and visit the castle (1 or 2) before planning your return to Vienna.

Looking for day trips from Vienna? Come, visit the picturesque Wachau Valley. This valley is formed by the Danube river in Austria. This is perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway in the midst of nature and culture #wachauvalley #vienna # austria

We have provided a few hotel recommendations should you decide to stay in Wachau overnight.

1. Drive Along The Valley

The Wachau Valley is beautiful because it’s lined with greenery on all sides of the road, with hills and castles in the distance and the river flowing alongside your road. Isn’t that romantic already? Consider pit stops to take pictures or walk by some water banks or mini-ports to soak in the beautiful nature.

2. A visit to the Vineyards

The Wachau Valley produces one of the most popular white wines in the region.

Sunny day in Wachau Valley. Landscape of vineyards and Danube River at Weissenkirchen, Austria.

The Danube has an extremely diverse geological terrain, and its waterway through terraces makes the cultivation of vines on these inclines unique and picturesque simultaneously.

Many of the region’s wineries date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The Wachau Valley region has about 124 vineyards and 650 growers cultivating on 3300+ acres of land.

3. Melk Abbey

Melk Abbey is one of the biggest baroque abbeys in Europe. It is a Benedictine abbey located in Melk adjoining the Wachau valley.

Looking for day trips from Vienna? Come, visit the picturesque Wachau Valley. This valley is formed by the Danube river in Austria. This is perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway in the midst of nature and culture #wachauvalley #vienna # austria

The abbey is striking, with its bright yellow color painted all over. It is a living monastery and is inhabited by monks. This abbey was originally built to serve as a royal palace.

There are remnants of the Austrian ruling dynasties and their rulers housed inside the abbey. It is believed that Maria Theresa received 40 kg of gold, which is preserved in the abbey.

The abbey’s entrance is decorated with golden leaves and white marble statues. A visit to the monastery includes the Imperial Staircase, the Imperial Corridor, the abbey museum, the Marble Hall, the balcony, the library, the abbey church, and the abbey park with its Baroque pavilion.

Melk Abbey entrance

You can capture amazing shots from the panoramic terrace and visit special exhibitions in the abbey. Walking through the lobby, you will enter the Stiftskirche, the church dedicated to St John the Baptist.

The ceilings are decorated with beautiful frescoes. Built in the early 1700s as a royal palace, Melk Abbey was eventually gifted to Benedictine monks who turned the estate into a fortified abbey.

The Abbey won the “Best Historic Destination of the World” award in 2008. The entrance to the abbey costs 13 Euros. You can access the abbey with a guided tour from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm local time. Check out their current fees here

4. Melk Abbey Gardens

If you have additional time on your hands, take a stroll at the Melk Abbey Gardens. These gardens are nicely maintained with flower beds and are wooded with many trees over 400 years old.

The gardens end on a hilltop; from here, you can soak in and capture amazing views of the Abbey and the valley.

5. Old Town Melk

The old town of Melk is a must-visit after exploring the Abbey. You can hang out here, grab a drink, or shop for souvenirs. There are tons of shops and restaurants to choose from.

Main square of town Melk in Lower Austria.

The village center is downhill from the Abbey and only takes a few minutes to reach. Although small, the old town center of Melk has hotels, cafes, a church, and a City Hall in the vicinity.

What is most mesmerizing is that the center is nestled inside the village’s old architecture, and from here, you can capture the pretty buildings and greenery of the village and enjoy its quaint ambiance. After exploring Melk Abbey, it is a good time for lunch before heading to Krems.

6. Melk to Krems: River Cruise Options

There are many ways to reach Krems from Melk. It is about a half an hour drive from Melk. If you are using the train, you will reach Krems in 1 hour.

Visit the picturesque Wachau Valley of Austria - day trip from Vienna. Explore the Melk and the Krems, sail on the Danube River, bike through the valley, take a wine tasting tour, visit the beautiful castles and Benedictine abbey. There are also boat tours from Melk to Krems and back, a great opportunity to enjoy the river Danube. Book your boat tour from Melk to Krems.

If you drive to the Wachau Valley, explore Melk first and then take a boat tour to Krems and back to enjoy the scenic Danube River ride.

7. Schloss Schönbühel

Schloss Schönbühel is a medieval castle that you will most likely see by the Danube river banks on your boat tour. This castle was built in the 12th century in the town of Schönbühel-Aggstein.

The castle is situated on a rock (40 metres above sea level), just like the Aggstein fortress (which is in ruins). The castle was built as a defensive fortress in the 12th century. Its owner and builder were Marchwardus de Schoenbuchele.

After him, the castle had passed through the hands of many owners. It stayed with the Starhemberg family for over 400 years and was later sold to Count Oswald von Seilern und Aspang.

8. Aggstein Fortress Ruins

The Aggstein fortress was built in the early 12th century. It was built to monitor the traffic coming and going from the Danube River.

The fortress was built on a narrow ridge 480 metres above sea level. It has hidden stairways, courtyards, and towers, including a dungeon and a chapel, making this place a great spot to explore the historical remnants of the valley.

The Aggstein castle is in ruins now, but it offers breathtaking views of the entire Wachau Valley.

The beautiful blue colored cathedral tower will definitely catch your attention in Dürnstein. The Blue Monastery Church was built in the 1700s and is one of the finest baroque towers in the whole of Austria. Guided tours are available at the abbey.

You have no idea how much I love the Wachau Valley. I have cruised the Upper Rhine Valley and I think the Wachau Valley, which is less known, is way more spectacular. We spent a day there (from Vienna) but would like to visit back and stay on the area several nights.

That’s so nice to know! We were there for a day trip, I bet it will be amazing to stay for several nights!

Oh, it’s such a shame I didn’t find this post before going to Vienna! Wachau Valley looks so sweet. I love the architectural style. And it’s definitely not far from the capital!

That means you gotta re-visit! <3 its a beautiful place to rewind

I would love to try a bike ride there in spring before the tourist arrive!

What an absolutely stunning place! I have never heard of Wachau Valley but s going on my list when I’m in Vienna. Love that the entire valley is UNESCO heritage listed. The abbey looks incredible and I’m a wine lover so I’d definitely be interested in a wine tour. Gorgeous pictures.

I’d never heard of the Wachau Valley before, but *wow* are those pictures gorgeous! Yet another beautiful place to add to the ever-growing list 🙂 Thanks for the guide!

Thanks so much! I am sure you will love Wachau!

Good thing that we saw this blog before going to Austria. We are now planning to go to Wachau Valley, appreciate if you can let us know the exact place to take the overlooking picture above with vines (tagged as “Wachau Valley” above). Thanks

Thanks so much Ken! You can capture amazing shots of the Wachau valley from Durnstein ruins. Hope you have a wonderful trip to Austria! Take care

I’m going to Vienna in early December, do you think it would still make an enjoyable day trip that time of year?

Hi Emma, Wachau in December is beautiful in its own unique way. Winters in Wachau are not SUPER cold (like Canada or some cities in the states). However you won’t be able to take boat or river tours for the most part of December (and winter). Instead what you can do is enjoy the white wintry landscape of Wachau (especially Durnstein) – views vineyards from a hotel’s hot whirlpool or enjoy some wine. Melk Abbey is only accessible through guided tours in winters (from Nov to March), so if you wish to visit book a tour in advance. You can visit the Aggstein ruins for some Christmas shopping/markets in December.

Make sure you pack well for winters! Happy Travels!

A Day Trip to the Wachau Valley from Vienna

A Day Trip to the Wachau Valley from Vienna - Endless Family Travels

Have you heard of the Wachau Valley? No, I didn’t think so. Don’t worry, we’re here to tell you all about it, and let you know how easy it is to visit from Vienna. Take a day trip to the Wachau Valley from Vienna either by car or by train, and enjoy historic towns, vineyards, konditorei (patisseries), and the beautiful Danube River.

We loved our 2 days in Vienna, but it was full-on and busy. It was lovely to head out into the beautiful Austrian countryside to enjoy a more relaxed part of the country.

Payton and Michele at Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna

Transport to the Wachau Valley from Vienna

For the most flexibility, visiting the Wachau Valley by car is the easiest. Located only 80kms / 50miles outside of Vienna, so it is only 1 hour by car. We chose to drive this route, as we were incorporating a visit to the Wachau Valley into our broader Austrian road trip. But before we chose to do this, we did research how to visit by train.

Krems an der Donau is accessible by train from the Wien Heiligenstadt station in the north of Vienna, and takes around 1 hour. Or via St Pölten from Wien Westbahnhof station in the west in 1.25 hours.

Once you have reached the Wachau Valley, there is a special tourist train to take you from place to place. Timings of the Wachau Railway run approximately mid-March to mid-December:

18 March to 29 May – every SA, SO & public holiday from 30 May to 1 November – daily from 2 to 17 December – every SA & SO and on 8 December

There are also local buses that go between the villages all year round.

Hagmann Konditorei, Krems an der Donau

Places to visit in the Wachau Valley

The ideal way to experience the Wachau Valley is to cycle through the grapevines and on the amazing cycle paths created along the Danube River. You can then take the train back or for sections if you are tired / it is raining. We didn’t do any cycling while we were here, but we regret it now, as it looked so fun!

Krems an der Donau

Our first stop was Krems an der Donau. This cute town is a great place to stop for morning tea (or a cheeky wine tasting). A friend had recommended Café-Konditorei Hagmann – which offered an amazing array of of cakes and hot drinks to tide us over until lunch. Payton had a light pastry filled with cream, a bit like a chimney cake.

Krems is famous for its Apricot Festival every July and Apricot Brandy (do try it if you get the chance). The lush Wachau Valley is prime growing conditions for both apricots and grapes.

And that brings me on to the other reason to visit Krems an der Donau – the wine. We can recommend Weingut Mayer-Resch, a women-owned winery producing delicious local varietals. The Grüner Veltliner is a bright and citrusy white wine with peppery notes. The Wachau Valley is also known for its Rieslings.

Tip : The Parkhaus Aaaaadmin parking building is conveniently close to the pedestrian old town.

Hagmann Konditorei, Krems an der Donau

Parish Church – Krems St. Veit

We stumbled upon the Parish Church of St. Veit in Krems. It looks plain and nondescript from the outside, but the internal decoration, windows and frescoes are incredible.

We stood in awe of the space, the acoustics, and the sacred building we were in. It was a blessing to have experienced it.

St. Veit, Krems an der Donau

We then drove the river road along the Danube to Melk. Our intention was to visit Aggstein Castle on the way, but it was raining heavily and the clouds had covered the hill where the Aggstein Castle ruins were; so we gave up on that idea. On a sunny day the location offers amazing views of the Wachau area!

Melk Abbey dominates the Melk skyline. The original Benedictine Abbey was built on this promontory in 1089. However this Baroque version was built between 1702 and 1736, after a fire destroyed much of the old structure. The Melk Abbey is home to hundred of ancient manuscripts, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage area listed as ‘the Wachau Cultural Landscape’.

You can tour the Abbey and see how grand it is from the inside. If you don’t fancy doing a self-guided trip to the Wachau Valley, you can take a tour that starts in Vienna . If you want a custom tour, but don’t want to drive or use public transport, you can also take a private tour by car .

Tip : In the summer, you can take a boat ride in one direction and take the train back, for a very relaxing and scenic option!

Melk, Wachau Valley

Wachau Valley Wine Tasting

A drive or cycle through the vines from Krems to Dürnstein is a great little detour on your journey. Hire bikes in Krems and take the easy bike paths along to the incredible blue church in Dürnstein, stopping at wineries along the way. Be sure to bring a backpack to carry your wines home in!

The vines are so captivating, zigzagging up the hills in impossibly perfect lines. The Grüner Veltliner wines are a lively alternative to Sauvignon Blancs (my personal favorite).

Vines of the Wachau Valley

Taking a Danube River Cruise in the Wachau & Danube Valleys

You can choose a river cruise which departs from Vienna and takes the full day to sail through the Wachau Valley and back. The downside to this option is that you may not get the time you desire in the locations you wish.

Or you can take the shorter tourist boats between Krems and Melk mentioned above. If you choose not to drive, we recommend taking the train to Krems, and then a combination of the tourist train and boat ride. Be aware some of these services are only available in summer.

How to Visit the Wachau Valley from Vienna

A fantastic juxtaposition to the grandeur and scale of Vienna, a day trip to the Wachau Valley from Vienna is bliss. If you’re a fan of wine like we are, it is a must-do while you’re in Austria. If you just need a break from the city, it’s an easy and relaxed short visit you can do in a day.

Payton loved the cakes, the little winding streets of Krems, and the cake-like Abbey building. I just wished I could’ve brought some of the wines back with us!

This region has been on my bucket list for years, and when I finally visited Wachau Valley from Vienna, I was not disappointed. Even if my main reason for going there was the jaw-dropping Melk Abbey, I enjoyed every moment of my day trip from Vienna to Wachau Valley.

Why visit Wachau Valley

Even if the country is known mainly for its majestic mountains, I think that Wachau Valley is one of the most picturesque and interesting places to visit in Austria. The landscape is simply stunning, with hills rolling all the way to the Danube, numerous vineyards and apricot orchards dotting the area, charming little towns along the river, and some fantastic historical sites (mostly monasteries and castles).

The area is not very large, only some 36km along the Danube, it is packed with attractions. In 2000, “Wachau Cultural Landscape” was included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.

How to get to Wachau Valley from Vienna

Depending on how much time you have for visiting Wachau Valley, there are different ways to get here from Vienna and explore the area. The best way would be to drive to the Wachau Valley – this way, you can explore the area freely. You can rent a car for your trip here.

If you want to use public transport, train is the best option. Direct trains from Vienna (Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof) to Krems depart every hour throughout the day, arriving at the first stop on the Wachau Valley a bit over an hour later. You can also take the train from Vienna to Melk, on the other side of the Wachau Valley. Like with trains to Krems, there are direct departures (from Wien Westbahnhof station) every hour throughout the day, arriving at Melk an hour later.

The price for a one-way ticket from Vienna to Krems or Melk (or from those towns back to Vienna) is around €20. You can check the connections and buy the tickets here.

Wachau Valley tour from Vienna

If you are short on time and would like an easy trip, you can go on the Wachau Valley tour from Vienna. This is what I did, and I had a really good day exploring the area. It was a good value for money, and I could see all the highlights of the Wachau Valley hassle-free. This is the tour I took.

The tour departs from central Vienna (next to the Opera) at 9 in the morning. After a bit over one hour drive, it’s time for the first stop of the day – Dürnstein – where you will have a short guided tour and some free time to explore the town on your own.

The last activity of the day is the guided tour of the Melk monastery, where you can learn more about this historical site, admire some stunning interiors, and see where the inspiration for Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose” came from. From Melk, you will return to Vienna, arriving around 6 p.m.

How to get around Wachau Valley

If you decide to go for the Wachau Valley tour, you don’t need to worry about getting around the area. But if you explore the Wachau Valley independently, there are a few ways to get between the attractions.

If you have a car, driving from one place to another is easy. Other options include the train between the towns (it runs along the Danube, on the side of the river where Krems, Dürnstein, and Spitz are located) or the boat (departures are less frequent, in the low season only once a day, but the views are so much better).

You can also rent a bike and cycle along the Danube – there are good cycling paths all the way along the Wachau Valley.

What to see in Wachau Valley

Besides the beautiful landscape, there are some interesting places to visit in Wachau Valley where you should stop during your trip. Here are the highlights of the area:

  • Krems – dating back to the 10th century, this is a lovely old town worth wandering around. There are numerous museums, cultural sites, and historical places, some of them originally from medieval times.
  • Göttweig – across the Danube River from Krems, you can stop here in the massive Benedictine Abbey founded in the 11th century.
  • Weißenkirchen in der Wachau with the impressive Gothic fortified church from the 14th century
  • Spitz – the main wine-producing place in the region, with picturesque views of the town and surrounding area and the ruins of the 12th-century castle.
  • Aggstein Castle – impressive ruins of the castle from the early 12th century, located high above the Danube River, with some breathtaking views over the Wachau Valley.
  • Schönbühel Castle – with its picturesque location right on the Danube, this 12th-century castle can impress with its magnificent structure. Unfortunately, this is a private property, so visiting the castle is impossible.
  • Melk – the highlight of the Wachau Valley with its amazing abbey and charming Old Town below. Melk was first mentioned in the 9th century, and the Benedictine Abbey was founded here in 1089. This is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Austria, and the abbey’s interior can make your jaw drop with all the stunning details and paintings. The place was actually the inspiration for Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose.” For me, Melk Abbey was the main reason I wanted to visit Wachau Valley; it definitely didn’t disappoint.

Burgruine Aggstein (the castle ruins of Aggstein) which traces its origins to the early 12th century is beautifully placed on the hills of the Dunkelsteinerwald Forest 300 meters high above the Danube in the town of Schönbühel-Aggsbach .

The castle tour takes you through the hidden stairways, courtyards, towers, a dungeon, a chapel, and a knight’s hall. Rosengärtlein (Rose Graden) is the most famous attraction in the castle. Unlike the name suggests, Rosengärtlein is an escape-proof prison.

If you have time, I strongly recommend you take a fairy tale tour with the storyteller Dena Seidel . Kids would love it.

Aggsbach Markt

Aggsbach Markt in the village of Willendorf is well-known for being a place where the Venus of Willendorf was found.

Schloss Schönbühel

Dating back to the 12th century, the medieval castle of Schönbühel is strategically placed on a cliff above the Danube in the town of Schönbühel-Aggsbach . It’s just a 10-minute drive away from the Stift Melk. You also get to see it on a Wachau Valley Cruise.

Emmersdorf offers a beautiful view of Melk Abbey. The parish church of St Nikolaus, Rothenhof Castle, Vintners Houses, a town hall with a 500-year-old vaulted ceiling, and the ruins of Gossam are some of the interesting places to visit in Emmersdorf.

The historic town of Melk on the Danube with its 1000 years old history and culture unclothe like an old storybook.

It’s best known for its huge Benedictine abbey, Melk Abbey (Stift Melk) . The vivid yellow of the abbey perched on a cliff overlooking the river catches your sight as you approach the otherwise sleepy town of Melk.

Wachau Valley, Duernstein monastery

Wachau Valley 2024: 14+ Surefire Tips For A Magic Day

February 2024 Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Lower Austria, between the towns of Melk and Krems. With thousands of years of history and culture, materialising in charming villages and majestic landmarks the valley offers a glimpse into Austria’s rich past. From the Benedictine Abbey of Melk to the medieval town of Dürnstein, there are plenty of cultural gems to explore. Specifically, Wachau Valley is famous for its wine, particularly the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varieties. There are plenty of vineyards and wineries in the region, offering wine tastings and tours.

Can you take a river cruise from Vienna to Wachau, or is it better driving there?

Why do I know Wachau so well? Actually, it was my commuter destination for two years. I was lucky enough to get a postgraduate scholarship between vineyards, medieval market towns and baroque landmarks!

How Far is Wachau Valley From Vienna?

Wachau Valley: Duernstein

The heavy mixture of culture and nature makes Wachau Valley a fabulous outdoor experience, and a UNESCO World Heritage and Nature site. Hence, it’s the perfect destination for a magic day trip from Vienna, if you plan carefully.

How to best get to Wachau from Wien? Before you say river cruise do consider that a single boat trip takes 5.5 hours (upstream), which will eat into your time onsite. In fact, your most scenic boat ride will be IN Wachau rather than TO it.

For lovers of green transport there are frequent direct REX trains from Vienna’s Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof that take you to Krems in one hour and 10 minutes. (Access train time table here .)

If you are short on time and want to set your own agenda, consider renting a car and driving to Wachau, or arrange private car transfer . Especially if you love to visit off-path wineries having a car really helps. To give you an idea, most popular destinations in Wachau are at 70 to 90 km (49 to 55 mi) distance from Vienna’s city centre.

Key Places of Wachau Valley

The best cultural spots of Wachau are Melk Abbey, a picture-book baroque architecture gem; the medieval market town of Krems, Göttweig Abbey, and of Aggstein castle.

The best nature trails include the Danube bike path (‘Donauradweg’) and the Welterbesteig , a 180 km long hiking trail.

Duernstein vineyards

Other than that, the Medieval village charms with its historic houses, narrow alleys, and tiny shops. More prominently, most postcard views of the village show the baroque bell tower of lovely Dürnstein monastery. If you have time, pay a quick visit to the wonderful church and romantic riverside terrace. If you book a river cruise, double check that it stops at Dürnstein.

Wachau Valley: Melk Abbey

Definitely the most popular way to visit Melk Abbey from Vienna is during a Wachau Day Trip . Travelling by coach you will pass lots of nice local towns, among them Krems, a really picturesque market town. Between April and October, you will also cruise the Danube by boat. Most of all, this is a great ‘lean-back-while-seeing-much’ coach tour, including hotel pick-up from many Vienna hotels.

If you prefer to see Melk Abbey with a small, individual group (using an estate car) and like wine, get onto the fun winery tour , which departs from Vienna.

Spitz an der Donau

village of Spitz

For an invigorating hike from Spitz, Hinterhaus castle makes a lovely destination. Although a ruin now, you can still visit it with a little care, and take in its magic. As a matter of fact, you will reach Hinterhaus castle from Spitz’ town center in just under 30 minutes.

If you love apricots, the best time to visit is during the Apricot Festival in July.

Grafenegg Castle

Grafenegg castle

Most strikingly, the castle boasts turrets and statues of knights, a chamber of arms, a hall of knights, several elegant salons, a chapel and beautiful gardens.

Throughout the year Grafenegg runs high-profile musical events, among them the annual New Year’s Eve Gala and the widely acclaimed Summer Music Festival . The Christmas market at the castle attracts people from all over Lower Austria and Vienna. Learn more about my many visits to Grafenegg .

Göttweig Abbey

Goettweig Abbey

During the past decades, the classical concerts onsite became immensely popular among locals and day travellers. Especially the Easter and Advent concerts and the concert ‘Classics under the Stars’ with international celebrities such as opera star Elina Garança are priceless.

Address: A-3511 Stift Göttweig

Things To Do In Wachau Valley

Wine tasting and bike tours.

The Danube bike path leads along both sides of the Danube. You can change sides in Melk and Krems. The path is mostly flat, while gradually declining downstream, towards Vienna. The path is lined with sweet little villages such as Emmersdorf, Spitz, Aggsbach, Weissenkirchen, and Dürnstein. And all of them host wineries with some of the best Austrian wine.

Wachau Valley: boat close to Duernstein

If you want to visit Wachau from Vienna in a day, consider taking a day tour that includes a boat ride. For more information on the best boat tours included in a day trip, go to Wachau boat trip .

Wachau Valley Apricot Trail

Wachau Valley: apricot trail

The Wachau Valley Apricot Trail leads you through 4.5 kms of beautiful apricot orchards, which belong to a local apricot farm. The farm shop itself stocks all sorts of home made apricot goodies , from apricot schnapps to chutneys, jams and chocolate. The trail is open between April and October, and is located a five kilometres from Krems city centre.

Location : Weinhof Aufreiter, 3506 Krems-Angern, Dorfstrasse 34

What Is The Best Time To Visit Wachau Valley?

In Wachau, it is usually a little warmer and sunnier than in the rest of the region. Even so, the best time to visit is definitely between April and October. Because many wine taverns, restaurants and local boat operators close during the winter you will find much more to do during the warmer months. Likewise, some day trips to Wachau only include a Danube boat ride between April and October.

As for seasonal festival, among the most spectacular is the Summer Solstice in June with its magical fireworks and lights floating down the Donau.

Where To Stay In Wachau Valley?

There are a couple of nice and relaxing hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in Wachau Valley. They are usually good value for money and offer spacioius rooms.

Most Charming Hotels in Melk

The Hotel Restaurant Zur Post is one of those typical houses in Melk: yellow façade, white window frames, and red pelargonias cascading from its windows. It’s one of very few four star hotels in the area. From the building and its best rooms, you can see the monumental Melk Abbey towering over the town. The modern rooms are friendly and tastefully furnished.

The Hotel Zum Schwarzen Bären is a 300-year-old tavern turned into a four star wellness hotel and spa. (The main room of the tavern once served as a stable for those horses which dragged the Danube ships upstream.) The rooms are simple and spacious, as you’ll find so often in that area. Don’t miss the wine cellar with its vaulted ceilings used for wine tastings, and the lovely spa. The hotel is located in the sweet little village of Emmersdorf, just opposite Melk Abbey.

Most Charming Hotels in Krems an der Donau

My favourite places to stay – those big on charm – are actually located just outside of Krems, close or along the Danube.

Hotel Schloss Duernstein

A wine growing estate, a spa and wellness spot and a food heaven serving home grown vegetables: The Gartenhotel & Weingut Pfeffel Dürnstein is a solid four star hotel with a few nice extras.

Ad Vineas Gästehaus Nikolaihof Mautern an der Donau : This is my favourite romantic B and B in the area. During my postgraduate, I spent many evenings under the large tree in the court yard of this winegrowing estate, sipping ‘Federspiel’ or ‘Steinfeder’ wines. The rooms and family apartments of the adjacent new guesthouse are simple but spacious. Nikolaihof is located in Mautern, just opposite Krems, across the Danube.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

The best time of year for a winery tour really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to see the vineyards in full bloom then spring is the perfect time to visit. The air is fresh and new growth is sprouting throughout the winery, creating a beautiful atmosphere. Summer is also a popular time to visit because of the warm weather and bright sunshine, but keep in mind this is peak season for most wineries and it can get crowded. Fall is the most popular season for wine tastings because that’s when the grapes are harvested and wineries typically have special events or festivals. Winter can be a good choice too as it’s often quieter and some wineries offer unique seasonal activities like mulled wine tastings or holiday-themed tours.

Wine from the Wachau Valley in Austria is known for its high quality and distinct flavor. The region is mainly famous for its white wines, particularly the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varieties. These wines are grown on steep terraced slopes overlooking the Danube River, creating a unique microclimate that contributes to the flavors of the grapes. The cool nights and warm days during the growing season result in wines that are acidic with a pronounced minerality, as well as flavors of tropical fruits, herbs, and white pepper. The wine from Wachau Valley is considered a top-tier product due to its authenticity, unique characteristics, and exceptional quality.

After visiting the gorgeous Melk Abbey in the morning, we hurried down to the banks of the Danube where we boarded a boat that cruised the scenic Wachau Valley all the way to Krems.

The Wachau Valley is located along a scenic stretch of the Danube river between Melk and Krems. At only 36 kilometers long, the Wachau Valley packs a lot of beauty and unique ambience into its boundaries.

travelyesplease.com | Austria's Scenic Wachau Valley Cruise

The Wachau Valley is about as European as you can get. Small villages, castles, abbeys and ruins dot the valley, neatly tucked between picturesque, sloping vineyards.

travelyesplease.com | Cruising Austria's Scenic Wachau Valley

Not only is the Wachau Valley incredibly beautiful, it’s culturally significant as well. The towns and agricultural landscape of the Wachau Valley have managed to evolve with the changing times, while still preserving aspects of traditional life. This authentic, living cultural landscape is why UNESCO named the Wachau Valley a World Heritage Site in 2000.

Our Wachau Valley Cruise- Melk to Krems

Our cruise through the Wachau Valley made for a wonderful afternoon filled with lovely views and diverse scenery.

We spent much of the cruise out on deck, bouncing back and forth between port and starboard, trying to take in as much of the scenery as possible. It was a little hazy and humid, as rain clouds loomed above, but we still got a decent view of the villages and castle ruins the Wachau Valley is famous for.

travelyesplease.com | Austria's Scenic Wachau Valley Cruise

In between Melk and Krems, the Wachau Valley cruise makes stops at the villages of Emmersdorf, Spitz, and Dürnstein. The boat also floats past interesting sites such as Schoenbuehel Castle, the ruins of Aggstein Castle high on a hill, and Göttweig Abbey.

travelyesplease.com | Cruising Austria's Scenic Wachau Valley

I was hoping that the boat would stop at the main towns long enough for us to disembark and explore a little bit, but sadly that was not the case. Instead we stopped just long enough for people to get on or off.

travelyesplease.com | Cruising Austria's Scenic Wachau Valley

Knowing that once we got off the boat we wouldn’t be able to continue downstream to Krems, we decided to stay on board until the second last stop at Dürnstein.

Getting off at Dürnstein was a great choice! The small historic town is gorgeous, its blue baroque tower instantly recognizable. Dürnstein also has some compelling historic tales, courtesy of its ruined medieval castle and famous prisoner, Richard the Lionheart.

After a fun few hours exploring Dürnstein, we caught a bus to nearby Krems, had dinner, then took the train back to Vienna.

Final Thoughts About Our Wachau Valley Cruise

Apart from the disappointing weather and poor conditions for photography, we had a great time on our Wachau Valley cruise.

Danube River and the Wachau Valley

I always appreciate an endearing mix of history and natural beauty and the Wachau Valley offered just that with its hilly landscape, crumbling castles, notable monasteries, and pretty villages.

We definitely would return to this part of Austria but next time I’d like to cycle along the valley so I can experience all the sights at my own pace.

Tips for Cruising the Wachau Valley

  • The company that we cruised with was Brandner but DDSG Blue Danube also offers Wachau Valley sightseeing cruises. Both companies sail between Melk and Krems (upstream and downstream), have on-board restaurants, and sell one-way and round-trip tickets.
  • Depending on the ticket you buy, it may be possible to hop-on/hop-off the boat at Dürnstein or Spitz. You definitely want to confirm this with the cruise company first, as their websites aren’t always as clear as they could be about this. When we did our Wachau Valley cruise, it wasn’t an option to hop off and then re-board the boat later, even though we had a ticket for the full route (Melk to Krems).
  • The Wachau Valley cruise from Melk to Krems takes approximately 1 hr 45 mins.
  • The train ride from Krems back to Vienna was about an hour long.

Information was updated January 2024, but can change without notice. Please confirm directly with service providers.
