5 key things to know about the costco anywhere visa card, before you open the costco anywhere visa card, here are five key things you should know that may sway you one way or another..

Few retailers inspire such strong customer loyalty as Costco (one couple even got married there ). But is it smart for Costco members to sign up for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi to maximize their savings? After all, store credit cards are not always the best option for consumers as they sometimes have less than stellar terms and rewards .
Select took a deeper look at the Costco Anywhere Visa Card 's benefits and drawbacks to help you decide whether it is right for you. Here are five important things you should know about the card.
Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging purchases for the first $7,000 per year (then 1%); 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases; 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com; 1% cash back on all other purchases

- Generous gas rewards
- No fee charged on purchases made outside the U.S.
- Costco membership is required
- Rewards are distributed once a year and can only be redeemed at U.S. Costco Warehouses
- No welcome bonus, so you can’t maximize rewards during the first few months of card opening
- Estimated rewards earned after 1 year: $406
- Estimated rewards earned after 5 years: $2,031
1. It has a robust rewards program
While experts usually don't recommend signing up for a store credit card , the Costco Anywhere Visa Card is an exception, thanks in part to its tiered rewards program that benefits gas guzzlers, foodies and frequent travelers.
Here are the rewards you earn with the Costco Anywhere Visa:
- 4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging purchases worldwide for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter
- 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases worldwide
- 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com
- 1% cash back on all other purchases
Unfortunately, the card doesn't currently offer a welcome bonus , so you can't earn increased rewards during your first few months of account opening.
2. Costco purchases don't earn the highest cash-back rate
Though this card is co-branded with Costco, purchases at the store don't earn the highest amount of cashback. You earn 2% cash back on purchases from Costco and Costco.com.
While this may seem rather low, if you frequently shop at Costco for groceries, it can still help you maximize your savings. Many credit cards that offer bonus rewards for grocery shopping exclude warehouses like Costco, so while you can earn 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%) with the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express , that doesn't apply to Costco purchases. Terms Apply. Also, keep in mind that Costco warehouses only accept credit cards issued by Visa so you wouldn't be able to swipe an American Express, Mastercard or Discover card anyway.
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card is still a decent option for Costco purchases with 2% cash back. However, there are other cards that offer similar (or better) returns at Costco. For example, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is a no annual fee Visa card that offers 2% cash rewards on all eligible purchases, including ones made at the wholesale club.
And if you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards member, you can earn up to 2.62% cash back on all purchases made with the Bank of America® Unlimited Cash Rewards Card . You can become a Preferred Rewards program member by having at least $20,000 in a Bank of America deposit and/or Merrill investment account, though you'll need to have at least $100,000 invested to unlock the maximum 2.62% return.
Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card
Unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases
Earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months
0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers; balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro rate
20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% Variable APR on purchases and balance transfers
3% intro for 120 days from account opening then BT fee of up to 5%, min: $5
Excellent/Good
See rates and fees , terms apply.
3. You can only collect rewards once a year
The cashback you earn with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card is provided via an annual reward certificate once your February billing statement closes. To redeem the certificate for a check or merchandise, you have to head to a U.S. Costco warehouse. That may come as an unexpected surprise if you didn't read the fine print as most other credit cards allow you to redeem rewards online, typically within one billing cycle of earning them.
Learn more about how to redeem Costco credit card rewards .
4. You have to be a Costco member
While the card itself has no annual fee, cardholders must have a paid Costco membership , which starts at $60 for Gold Star and Business levels, then doubles in price to $120 for Gold Star Executive and Business Executive members.
If you're already a Costco member, this isn't really an added cost. But if you're considering this card and already have a membership with BJ's or Sam's Club, you may think twice about adding the cost of another warehouse club membership.
Learn more: What credit cards does Costco accept?
5. The card offers helpful perks for travelers
Aside from the solid 3% return on travel purchases, frequent travelers will benefit from the various perks provided by the Costco Anywhere Visa Card , which include travel and emergency assistance, worldwide travel accident insurance and worldwide car rental insurance.
Additionally, there are no foreign transaction fees , so purchases made outside the U.S. won't incur the typical 3% charge. This can add up to substantial savings if you regularly travel abroad.
For more details on the card's benefits and perks, see our full review of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card .
Bottom line
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card is right for you if you're a Costco member who wants to earn competitive rewards on gas, EV charging purchases, dining and travel purchases, and don't mind receiving rewards once a year.
However, if you're not loyal to Costco and want a card that doesn't require a membership but still earns high rewards, check out our list of the best credit cards for Costco . You can also browse Select's roundups of the best cards for travel , dining , grocery and gas purchases.

Detailed review: Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
For a store card, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi carries plenty of goodies in its cart.
The card can indeed be used anywhere, not just at Costco, and it offers impressive rewards rates across a wide variety of categories. Its annual fee is $0 .
But there are a couple of economy-size caveats there: You have to be a Costco member to get the card (or to realize any benefit from it), and that does require a yearly membership fee. And while the card’s rewards rates are generous in some categories, they aren't particularly high for Costco purchases, and redemption isn’t straightforward.

Benefits and perks
It really is an anywhere card.
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is an "open-loop" store card, meaning you're not limited to using it only at Costco. In fact, in several cases, you're rewarded more handsomely for using it elsewhere.
Big gas rewards
For those who drive often, this card's rich gas rewards are a highlight. At 4% back on up to $7,000 in gas spending a year (and EV charging purchases, too), you could earn $280 annually just at the pump. And that's not including the 1% back you'd get on any gas purchases beyond that cap.

Rich rewards on dining and travel
The 3% cash back on dining and travel is unlimited. That's as good as the rate offered by some premium travel cards with annual fees in the hundreds of dollars.
Unlike many other cash-back credit cards, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi charges no extra fee on purchases abroad . If you travel internationally, you'll continue earning rewards without facing a 3% penalty on every purchase you make.

Drawbacks and considerations
Its richest reward rates are outside costco.
This is a card designed for people who are already shopping at Costco. So if you’re expecting huge incentives to spend money at the retailer itself — along the lines of the 5% discounts or rewards offered by cards from Amazon and Target — you’re going to be disappointed. You’ll get 2% back on purchases at Costco and Costco.com, but the signature appeal of this card is that it turns your other spending into rewards you can use at Costco.

It requires excellent credit for approval
Simply being a Costco member is not enough to qualify for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi . Excellent credit is generally defined as a credit score of 720 or better. Keep in mind, though, that credit scores alone do not guarantee approval for any credit card.
» MORE: Full review of the Sam's Club credit card
No sign-up bonus
Costco's annual membership fee — $60 or $120 a year, depending on the type of membership — is a de facto annual fee for this card. Unlike many cash-back cards, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi offers no sign-up bonus to offset that cost.
» MORE: Review of the BJ's credit card
Redemption is restricted
While the card's rewards rates are high, the redemption process is peculiar. With most rewards credit cards, cardholders receive their cash back or points within a billing cycle or two and can redeem them once the rewards post to their account. With the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi , cardholders receive their rewards once a year in the form of a certificate included with their February billing statement. They have until the end of the year to bring the certificate to a Costco store and either get their rewards as cash or use them for credit against their purchases. (The certificate is not redeemable online. Although, in 2022 Costco added an option for cardmembers who have earned $500 or more in rewards. They could choose to redeem their rewards certificate as a direct deposit into a bank account.) At its own discretion, Costco may also fulfill redemptions in an alternative form like a check or electronic transfer instead of cash. If cardholders cancel their Costco membership before redeeming the certificate or don’t redeem before the Dec. 31 deadline, they lose those rewards. To recap: You'll have to wait months for your rewards, you might have to travel to a store to redeem them, and you'll be on the clock to do so. If any of these are dealbreakers, this isn't the card for you.
Alternatives to the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi : Other Visa cards
If the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi doesn't appeal to you but you still want a credit card to use at Costco, keep in mind that your choices are limited to cards on the Visa payment network. Costco accepts only Visa credit cards, along with cash, checks, debit cards, EBT and Costco Cash cards. Visa cards worth a look:
Alliant Cashback Visa® Signature Credit Card : This card earns up to 2.5% cash back on the first $10,000 you spend per billing cycle. To apply for the card, you first must join Alliant Credit Union.
Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card : You need a Fidelity account to reap the rewards on this card. It earns 2% back on every purchase, including at Costco. There's no annual fee.
Chase Freedom Unlimited® : This card pays 5% on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores and 1.5% cash back on every other purchase and has a $0 annual fee.
For other options, see our list of best credit card offers .
This is a Visa card, so you can use it at Costco, but it doesn't bother with a complicated tiered rewards structure and imposes no restrictions on redemption. You'll get 5% cash back on travel booked through Ultimate Rewards®, 3% back on dining and drugstores, and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases. Plus, you can redeem rewards in any amount at any time. You even get a sign-up bonus offer and a 0% intro APR period. The annual fee is $0 .
How to decide if it's right for you
Credit cards don't generally offer bonus rewards on wholesale clubs, so the 2% cash-back rewards at Costco and Costco.com on the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi can make the card worth getting for some Costco loyalists. The card's generous bonus categories for gas, travel, and dining out can sweeten the deal.

Methodology
NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.
While the card_name , from our partner, is geared to shoppers who spend a lot within the brand's warehouse stores, it's also considered one of the best credit cards for gas. This is mainly due to its incredible rewards structure that offers 4% back on up to $7,000 spent at gas stations and on EV charging stations each year (then 1% back), as well as 2% back at Costco stores and Costco.com.
Cardholders also earn 3% back at restaurants and on eligible travel purchases, followed by a flat 1% back on everything else. The card doesn't charge an annual fee or foreign transaction fees either, so you can keep for the long run at no cost if you never carry a balance.
That said, there are some "fine print" items you should know about with the card_name , including the fact you can only access the rewards you earn once per year. Before you sign up for the card_name , read on to learn everything there is to know.
Pros & Cons
Who should get it.
Due to its dynamic rewards structure and the fact you have to be a Costco member to use the card's rewards, the card_name is geared to people who shop at the warehouse stores and want to get the most from their purchases. That said, it's important to note that the card's 4% back category on gas and EV charging stations applies to all eligible gas stations worldwide and not just gas at Costco.
There are a few notable exceptions. For example, the fine print for the card says members will only earn 1% back on "gas purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores and warehouse clubs other than Costco or for fuel used for non-automobile purposes."
For the most part, these details make the card_name ideal for the following types of consumers:
- Heavy Costco shoppers who want to maximize rewards on their purchases.
- Consumers who are okay with redeeming their rewards for Costco merchandise.
- People who commute to work or pay to charge their electric cars on the go.
- Anyone who wants a rewards credit card with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.
Costco membership
As we mentioned already, you must be a Costco member to apply for the card_name or even use the rewards you earn. However, most Costco shoppers would agree the price of entry is well worth it once you figure out which Costco food and household items you can use on a regular basis.
Not only does Costco offer a range of bulk grocery items, but you can head to the warehouse store to stock up on clothing, furniture, electronics, dishes and cookware, and all other kinds of gadgets.
The cost of membership is also reasonable. As of 2023, Costco offers the following membership tiers to choose from:
Important: Business owners who want to earn cash back on their business purchases at Costco should look into the card_name instead. This card has the same rewards structure as the card for consumers, yet it is geared to small business owners and entrepreneurs.
Rewards structure
The card_name offers four different tiers of rewards consumers can maximize. After signing up, cardholders earn cash back at the following rates:
- 4% back on up to $7,000 per year in gas purchases worldwide and EV charging stations (then 1% back)
- 3% back on restaurant purchases and eligible travel
- 2% back on Costco and Costco.com purchases
- 1% back on everything else
With this rewards structure in mind, it's easy to see how you could rack up a ton of cash back on gas purchases, groceries at Costco stores, dining, travel and more. However, you should know about the very unique way the card_name doles out rewards before you sign up for this card.
Instead of letting you rack up cash back you can use throughout the year whenever you're ready, this card only gives you your cash back in the form of a rewards check once per year when your February statement closes. This means you can't save up your cash back to use at your leisure, and that you'll have to wait 12 months to be able to access your rewards haul each year.
Not only that, but rewards are only redeemable in Costco stores for Costco merchandise. You may be able to use your Costco rewards check to get cash back at a Costco register too, but the fine print on the card_name says individual Costco stores can allow this (or not allow it) based on their own discretion.
Additional hidden perks
The card_name doesn't have a lot of other benefits beyond the rewards it offers. In fact, the main listed card perk is the fact you can use your Costco credit card as your ID card to shop in stores.
The other major cardholder perk you get with the card_name is no foreign transaction fees. This benefit can be helpful if you travel internationally often and you don't want to pay extra fees to use your credit card when you do.
What could be improved?
While the card_name has an excellent rewards rate by any measure, there are a few notable downsides to be aware of. Improvements that could dramatically improve the value of this card include the following:
- The card doesn't have a sign-up bonus. Other cash back credit cards offer generous rewards plus a cash bonus of $200 or more, yet the card_name doesn't have a welcome offer of any kind.
- The card_name lacks an introductory APR offer. This card comes with a high interest rate that applies when you carry a balance, and the same APR applies to balance transfers.
- The earning rate for Costco purchases and other spending could be higher. Earning 2% back at Costco is just okay since other cards offer 2% cash back on everything you buy, and the 1% rewards rate on other purchases is seriously lacking.
How does the it compare?
With the downsides of this card at the top of your mind, you may be wondering how other cash back credit cards compare. Consider the following cards from other issuers and how they stack up to the card_name .
card_name vs. the Citi Double Cash® Card
Instead of offering several levels of rewards for different types of spending, the Citi Double Cash® Card offers 2% back on everything you buy — 1% when a purchase is made and another 1% when it's paid off. The card also comes with no annual fee, and consumers can redeem their rewards for a statement credit to their account, a check in the mail or direct deposit, among other options.
The Citi Double Cash® Card also comes with a balance_transfer_intro_apr,balance_transfer_intro_duration introductory balance transfer, followed by a reg_apr,reg_apr_type . This makes it a good option for people who need to consolidate high-interest debt from other cards. Just keep in mind that the intro APR offer does not apply to purchases. Also, the Citi Double Cash® Card charges foreign_transaction_fee in foreign transaction fees when you use it for purchases abroad.
Learn more from our full review .
card_name vs. card_name
The card_name also comes with no annual fee, and it offers its own unique rewards tiers consumers can maximize. New cardholders can start off with Earn an extra 1.5% on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year) - worth up to $300 cash back. That's 6.5% back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 4.5% back on dining, including takeout and eligible delivery services, 3% on all other purchases.
While the card_name does have foreign transaction fees, it comes with a intro_apr_rate,intro_apr_duration and a balance_transfer_intro_apr,balance_transfer_intro_duration (followed by a reg_apr,reg_apr_type APR). Better yet, consumers have the option to redeem their rewards for cash back, gift cards, statement credits, travel, merchandise and more.
card_name vs. Citi Custom Cash® Card
Finally, it's also worth looking into the Citi Custom Cash® Card if you want to maximize cash back and have more flexibility. This card comes with no annual fee, and cardholders earn 5% back on up to $500 spent in their top spending category each quarter, then 1% back. Top spending categories that earn bonus cash with the card are easy ones to use since they include restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, select transit, select streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs and live entertainment.
A welcome offer worth $200 in bonus cash can also be earned when cardholders spend at least $1,500 on purchases within six months of account opening. Worth considering if you’re a Costco shopper
At the end of the day, the card_name is worth considering if you're a Costco shopper or you've been planning to buy a membership. After all, this card will reward you handsomely each time you fill up on fuel, and you'll also earn 3% back on restaurant spending and travel and 2% back on all purchases you make with Costco.
You may even find that getting your rewards check once per year is not a big deal, and that you even look forward to it. After all, you can use your Costco rewards to stock up on anything the warehouse stores offer, including bulk groceries and household supplies, liquor and beer, and all kinds of other items you might want to splurge for.
At the very least, you could pick up the card_name to use for Costco shopping and gas then pair it with another card that offers more than 1% cash back on regular spending. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to earn credit card rewards, but smart planning can help you rack up more cash back for each purchase you make.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi other details
Costco anywhere visa card by citi rewards.
The major benefit of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card is that it offers rewards on both Costco purchases and other life expenses. With this card you can earn 4% cash back on gas and EV charging for the first $7,000 per year then 1%, 3% cash back on restaurants and travel purchases, 2% cash back at Costco and Costco.com and 1% cash back on all other purchases. A Costco membership is required to apply.
While you can earn a tremendous rewards rate on eligible gas and EV charging purchases, there are a few limitations to discuss. First, you can only the elevated rewards rate on the first $7,000 spent per year, and some gas stations at non-Costco superstores and grocery stores may not count towards the elevated rewards rate. If your household spends more than $583 on gas per month, you’ll only earn the lower rewards rate on gas and EV charging purchases after this spending threshold.
It’s also worth noting that many credit cards offer strong rewards on groceries but tend to exclude warehouse stores like Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s. If you shop at Costco often, opening the Costco Anywhere Visa Card can be a great way to earn a solid rewards rate on all of your Costco purchases.
Patience is a virtue with the Costco Anywhere Visa, as cardholders will receive a lump sum of their rewards earned once per year—specifically when your February billing statement closes. Rewards accrued from January through December’s billing statements are given in the form of an annual Costco credit card reward certificate and must be redeemed by December 31 of that same year.
Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi rewards potential
Using government data and other publicly available information, we estimate that a household in the U.S. that would be in the market for this card has an annual income of $84,352 and $25,087 in expenses they are likely to be able to charge to a credit card. We’ll also assume that this household spends half of its grocery spend at Costco.
- $1,568 in spending on gas x 4% back = $62.72 in rewards.
- $2,375 in spending at restaurants x 3% back = $71.25 in rewards.
- $985 in spending on travel x 3% back = $29.55 in rewards.
- $2,471 in spending on groceries at Costco x 2% back = $49.42.
- $17,688 in spending on all other eligible purchases = $176.88.
This example cardholder can earn a grand total of $389.82 in rewards annually.

- Average $200 per month on travel ($2,400 per year using the Chase travel portal for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and qualifying travel purchases on the Costco Anywhere card)
If using the Chase Sapphire Preferred card , the yearly earnings would be:
- 1x points on $3,600 at Costco = 3,600 points
- 1x points on $2,400 on gas = 2,400 points
- 3x points on $1,200 on dining = 3,600 points
- 5x points on $2,400 on travel = 12,000 points
- Total: 21,600 Ultimate Rewards points
Let’s add up the yearly earnings if using the Costco Anywhere card :
- 2% cash-back x $3,600 at Costco = $72
- 4% cash-back x $2,400 on gas = $56
- 3% cash-back x $1,200 on dining = $36
- 3% cash-back x $2,400 on travel = $72
- Total: $236 in cash-back
If you spend a lot at Costco, on gas, and eligible travel, you may fare better with the Costco Anywhere card when it comes to earnings. However, earnings are just one factor in determining a card’s value. Let’s continue and look at the value of those earnings at redemption time for each of our featured cards.
Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Preferred card earns the most on travel purchased via the Chase travel portal, dining, online grocery stores, and select streaming services. The Costco Anywhere card’s biggest earning categories are gas stations, select travel, and dining. The mix of your actual spending will determine which card delivers the most total earnings.
While rewards earnings are important, the real value you’ll get from them is revealed at redemption time . Here are the options for redeeming your rewards for both of our featured cards:
Let’s refer back to our earlier spending scenario. Spending on the Costco Anywhere card yielded $236 cash-back and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card yielded 21,600 Ultimate Rewards points . If the Ultimate Rewards points were redeemed for travel via the Chase travel portal, the value would be $270 (1.25 cents per point).
However, by our valuations of Chase points at 2 cents per point, those points are actually worth $432 when you transfer Ultimate Rewards points to travel partners. With travel partners, you have the potential to receive greater value than cash-back or travel portal redemptions.
However, if you don’t spend a lot on travel and don’t prefer to redeem your rewards for travel, you may find cash-back rewards a better fit for you.
Bottom Line: Your spending mix, redemption preferences, and card benefits will determine which card is a better fit for your circumstances. If you prefer to redeem your rewards for travel, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card can deliver greater value.
Travel Benefits and Protections
Travel benefits and protections can provide peace of mind, help when you need it, save money on your travel purchase, or provide elite-style perks.
Here are some of the travel protections found on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and the Costco Anywhere card:
- Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver — Pay for your entire rental with your card, decline the agency’s CDW/LDW coverage, and receive primary worldwide coverage for damage or theft with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card . Primary coverage means that you do not have to file a claim with other insurance before card coverage kicks in. The Costco Anywhere card also offers primary worldwide coverage outside of the U.S. and secondary coverage within the U.S.
- Roadside Assistance — Make just 1 call and pay a low pre-negotiated fee with either card for a service call that includes limited towing, lockout service, fuel delivery (cost of fuel not included), tire changing, winching, and jump-starting service.
- Travel Accident Insurance — If an eligible tragic accident occurs while traveling, you will have $500,000 in travel accident insurance with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and $250,000 with the Costco Anywhere card.
- Travel and Emergency Assistance Services — While you’re traveling, enjoy 24/7 assistance and referrals for travel, medical, or legal emergencies where you’re traveling far from home. Keep in mind that you’re responsible for any services used.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees — Both of our featured cards do not charge foreign transaction fees.
You’ll find these additional travel benefits and protections on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card:
- $50 Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit — Make a hotel booking with your card via the Chase travel portal and receive a $50 statement credit each card anniversary year.
- Visa Signature Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection Benefits — Enjoy hotel VIP status, an upgraded room (when available), daily breakfast for 2, late checkout (when available), and a $25 food and beverage credit.
- Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Insurance — If your trip is canceled or disrupted for a covered reason, you could receive up to $10,000 per person, up to $20,000 per trip.
- Trip Delay Reimbursement — For common carrier trips where you are delayed for a covered reason, you could receive up to $500 for eligible unreimbursed expenses.
- Lost Luggage Reimbursement — If your luggage is lost or damaged, you could receive up to $3,000.
- Baggage Delay — Receive up to $100 per day with a maximum of $500 in reimbursement for eligible incidentals, if your bags are delayed more than 6 hours.
Shopping Benefits and Protections
Shopping benefits and protections that come with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card or Costco Anywhere card can save you money. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you’ll also have the additional benefit of earning a lot of bonus Ultimate Rewards points on purchases.
Shopping protections can provide coverage if something should happen to an eligible purchase made with your card. Here are some of the protections you’ll find on both cards:
- Purchase Protection — Make an eligible purchase with either card and receive coverage for theft or damage for 120 days from the purchase date. Coverage for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is limited to $500 per item and up to $50,000 per calendar year. The Costco Anywhere card limits coverage to $1,000 per item and up to $50,000 per calendar year.
Both cards also offer zero liability fraud protection against unauthorized purchases and a free FICO credit score .
Save money on your purchases and receive elevated earnings with these Chase shopping benefits.
- Chase Offers — Savings on everyday purchases add up when you log in to your online Chase card account and add merchant offers to your card.
- Shop through Chase — Earn additional Ultimate Rewards points by first visiting the Shop through Chase section of your online card account. Earn up to 20x more rewards by making your purchase via the portal.
- Instacart Benefits — Cardholders are eligible for a free 6-month Instacart+ membership plus a $15 quarterly credit.
- Extended Warranty — Eligible items purchased with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card that have a manufacturer’s warranty of 3 years or less will receive coverage for 1 additional year.
Costco Anywhere cardholders enjoy targeted savings on a regular basis.
- Shopping Offers — Receive special offers for purchasing discounted gift cards and coupons to use for specific in-store purchases.
Please note that this is not an all-inclusive list of benefits that come with our featured cards, just a list of key benefits for comparison purposes. We’ve also abbreviated the benefit descriptions. For a complete list of benefits and the applicable terms and conditions, you’ll want to access each card’s guide to benefits.
Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Preferred card has a broader collection of travel and shopping benefits and protections. But the Costco Anywhere card does offer primary car rental insurance outside of the U.S. and shopping protections that include purchase protection.
Annual fees and adding additional users to your card account can add to the cost of being a cardholder.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card charges an annual fee of $95 while the Costco Anywhere card does not charge an annual fee . However, you must be a Costco member to be approved for the Costco Anywhere card. The current price of membership is $60 per year for a Gold Star membership and $120 for a Gold Star Executive membership.
While the Chase Sapphire Preferred card charges an annual fee, its generous welcome bonus can make up for the first year’s annual fee. After receiving the welcome bonus, travelers who use the Chase travel portal could receive value beyond the annual fee after purchasing just $2,000 in travel each year .
If you shop frequently at Costco, your cash-back earnings with the Costco Anywhere card could also more than offset the cost of membership. If you maxed out the 4% cash-back on gas or EV charging purchases alone, you would receive $280 cash-back each year.
Bottom Line: There is an annual cost associated with having each of our featured cards. However, both cards require a low spending threshold to realize enough earnings to offset those costs.
If you’re a Costco shopper, there is value with the Costco Anywhere card. If you spend $1,500 a year on gas (4% back) or $3,000 at Costco (2% back), you would cover the cost of a Gold Star membership fee.
One downside to the Costco Anywhere card is that the rewards are only distributed once a year . Fortunately, you can redeem that rewards certificate in-store for cash (or merchandise).
However, if you spend a lot on travel, want greater flexibility and value when redeeming your rewards, and can use the additional travel and shopping benefits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is the better card. The additional value of the 10% anniversary points contributes to making the card difficult to beat.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card also serves a broader purpose of establishing a valuable long-term relationship with Chase, a prominent financial institution providing additional financial services products you may utilize throughout your lifetime.
So, both cards can live harmoniously in the wallet of a Costco shopper . Before you apply for either, though, be aware of Chase’s 5/24 rule .
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the costco anywhere card worth it.
Yes. For frequent Costco shoppers the card offers plenty of value. The 4% cash-back at gas stations and EV charging alone delivers enough value to more than offset the cost of the Costco membership required to be eligible for the card.
How do I redeem my Costco rewards certificate?
Each February, you’ll receive an email with your rewards certificate (if you’re signed up for paperless delivery) or a paper certificate in the mail. The certificate contains your earnings for the prior calendar year and can be redeemed for merchandise, cash, or check by visiting a Costco warehouse.
Can I redeem Ultimate Rewards points with PayPal?
Yes. You can redeem your Ultimate Rewards points during checkout at a merchant that accepts PayPal by linking your Chase card to your PayPal account, then selecting to use Ultimate Rewards points to pay. However, it is not recommended that you redeem Ultimate Rewards points via PayPal, as you will only receive 0.8 cents per point in value.
Does the Costco Anywhere card have a welcome bonus?
No. The Costco Anywhere card does not offer a welcome bonus.
Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred card come with lounge access?
The Chase Sapphire Preferred card does not come with airport lounge access. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with complimentary Priority Pass Select membership, which includes worldwide access to associated airport lounges, participating restaurants, and Minute Suites.

In head-to-head competition, which of these rewards credit cards wins out? Here’s what each has to offer and how they fare when put to the ultimate test — the cash back you’ll earn for using them.
Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi Earn 4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging worldwide for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter; 3% on restaurants and eligible travel purchases worldwide; 2% on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com, and 1% on all other spending.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi
Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card
Which credit card earns more cash back overall?
Based on identical spending inputs, you’ll earn $235.92 cash back per year with Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and $240.00 with Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card. For context, the average annual rewards payout from the cashback credit cards in the investor.com database is $181.73.
The annual rewards payout assumes you charge $1,000 each month spread across the following spending categories: Dining ($145), Entertainment ($134), Gas ($140), Groceries ($198), Travel ($128), Pharmacy ($15), and Other ($240). The dollar amounts for each category are based on consumer spending data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (i.e., how much the average American spends proportionally across the major credit card rewards categories). But you can — and absolutely should! — customize the inputs based on your actual monthly spending habits, using our rewards calculator .
To ensure the most accurate results possible, the rewards calculations for Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card incorporate bonus rewards rates, spending caps, default rewards rates and annual fees, where applicable.

Methodology
The results of the investor.com Credit Card Rewards Calculator are based on the monthly spending amounts you enter and the annual dollar value of the rewards each credit card program pays per $1 spent. Credit card companies often express this payout amount as a percentage (e.g., 1.5% of every dollar spent) or on a points basis (e.g. ,1.5 points for every dollar spent). We converted all of them to a dollar amount (“Cash Back Per Year”) to make comparing offers easier.
To calculate the amount of cash back you could earn per year, we factored in:
- Spend category inputs: The default dollar values for each “Spend Category” in the Best Cashback Credit Cards tool — gas, groceries, travel, restaurant, entertainment, pharmacy, other — are based on average American spending data from the Consumer Expenditure Surveys from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We also include additional spend categories (such as streaming services, online shopping, utilities, transit, Amazon and more) to help you see which rewards cards are most closely aligned with your actual spending patterns. We encourage you to customize the monthly spend inputs for the most accurate results.
- Tiered rewards rates: If a rewards credit card pays higher cashback rates on certain spending categories (also called “Bonus Rewards”), that difference is reflected in the total “Cash Back Per Year” tally.
- Rewards spending caps: Some cards impose category- or time-based limits (monthly, quarterly, annually) that affect the amount of rewards you can earn. For example, a card may pay 3% cash back on groceries on up to $1,000 of spending each quarter, then revert to the base/default rewards rate until the following quarter. We accounted for bonus spending caps and timeframe in the calculations.
- Default rewards rates: Purchases that exceed a spending cap are usually subject to a lower default rewards rate (e.g., 1% or 1.5%). We mathed that out too.
- Annual fees: If a rewards card charges an annual fee, we deducted that amount from the “Cash Back Per Year” total to provide a true accounting of a card’s annual rewards payout.
What’s not included in the “Cash Back Per Year” total is the cash value of any sign-up/introductory bonus. We highlight any Welcome Bonus separately. While sign-up bonuses can be the most lucrative part of getting a new cashback rewards credit card, not everyone will want or be able to do what it takes to earn the extra cash. (It usually requires spending a certain amount in a specified time period after the card is activated.)

Gas Credit Card Reviews
Best for gas or ev charging as a 3% bonus category: bank of america® customized cash rewards credit card - product name only.
If your spending habits change from time to time, having a card that allows you to customize your bonus categories can be a real plus. The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card gives you the option to choose one 3% bonus category each month, from a list:
- Gas/EV charging
- Online shopping
- Drug stores
- Home improvement/furnishings
Along with earning 3% back in the category you choose, you'll also earn 2% back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, up to a combined maximum of $2,500 in spending each quarter between the 3% and 2% categories (then you'll earn 1%).
If you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards customer, the card gets even more compelling. Gas Credit Card Frequently Asked Questions
What credit score do you need to get a gas credit card.
You need between a good credit score and an excellent credit score to be eligible to apply for most gas credit cards on our list. This translates to a FICO score of at least 670. However, some gas station chains have their own proprietary gas cards that you can use only at gas stations. These cards tend to be easier to get approved for, but keep in mind that you'll have very little flexibility in how you earn and redeem rewards.
Are gas credit cards worth it?
Gas credit cards are easily worth it for those who drive a lot — especially now that gas prices are extra unsavory. Earning rewards for these purchases can make the price increases a little easier to bear. It's even better if you pick a card that also earns bonus rewards in other categories where you spend a lot of money. For instance, road warriors who spend a lot of overnights away from home might consider a card like the US Bank Altitude Connect, which earns 4x on gas and travel (including hotels).
What's the best gas credit card with no annual fee?
The best gas credit card with no annual fee depends on what other categories you spend in and the rewards you prefer to earn. If you're a Costco member, it's hard to beat the earning rate on the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Otherwise, the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, Citi Custom Cash℠ Card, and U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card are all solid options.
Does Costco gas take credit cards?
Costco takes credit cards — but it only accepts Visa credit cards at U.S. Costco gas stations (like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card, and the U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card).
Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Gas Credit Cards
Business Insider's credit cards division works independently of our company's business division to scrutinize and compare credit cards that are targeted for various demographics. We will tell you honestly which credit card is most likely to suit your financial goals — and the pitfalls you may encounter.
We considered rewards cards that are currently available to new applicants in deciding on the top credit cards for gas purchases, along with these factors:
- Simplicity — Does the card make it easy to redeem rewards, and have a program that's easy to understand?
- Earning potential — Does the card earn generous rewards on gas, and are there other bonus categories that line up with everyday spending habits?
- Welcome bonus — Credit cards that offer a sign-up bonus or other incentives are more appealing, especially if they don't charge an annual fee.
- Options for different types of consumers — We included cards that are geared to all kinds of users, from products that earn travel points and cash-back to credit cards that earn rewards for electric vehicle charging.

A new credit card hitting the market is a relatively rare event, and a new rewards program happens even less often. The new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card* begins taking online applications March 20 and coincides with the launch of Wells Fargo’s new travel rewards program. Both will give Wells Fargo a competitive edge in the travel credit card space, which has been previously dominated by competitors like Chase , American Express and Capital One .
We have the basics you need to know about this new card, plus four insider tips to help decide if you should make plans to add the Autograph Journey to your credit card lineup.
What you need to know about the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card
Before we dive into the hidden features and benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey when online applications open on March 20:
- Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening
- Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases
- Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase
- No foreign transaction fees
- Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance
- $95 annual fee
4 important details about the Autograph Journey
Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.
1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards
The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .
Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.
For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.
2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors
The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.
This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5X points on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, whereas other travel purchases earn 2X points.
Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.
3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join
The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”
Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.
Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:
4. You may need to wait to apply
If you’ve applied for another Wells Fargo card in the last six months, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer before applying for the Autograph Journey.
Wells Fargo states in its terms and conditions, “If you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card account within the last six months, then you may not qualify to open an additional Wells Fargo Credit Card account. We may also limit how many open Wells Fargo Credit Card accounts you have.”
So if you want the new Autograph Journey, you should steer clear of applying for other cards from Wells Fargo for now. If you’re approved and use the card responsibly for six months or longer, you can consider adding additional Wells Fargo credit cards to your portfolio.
