Riva del Garda: Lake Garda Tourist Guide

Attractive town at the northern end of Lake Garda

About Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is a bustling Italian town which doubles as a tourist resort, located at the northern end of Lake Garda. This is the dramatic end of the lake, with mountains rising on either side, and Riva sits comfortably on the shore, with a backdrop of lake, valley and hills. Until the lakeside road was constructed, Riva was an important port for communications along the lake’s length. The town was part of Austria until 1918 and there is still something sedate and un-Italian about the streets and architecture. Nowadays it is in the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige, within the province of Trento. After Desenzano, Riva is the second-largest town on Lake Garda, and it has a very different atmosphere from the other lake resorts: simultaneously alive yet staid.

Visiting Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda has one or two actual ‘sights’, but mostly it is a pleasant base where tourists can stroll along winding streets and relax in waterfront squares. The town’s main lakeshore area is made up of a harbour, a park and a beach, so there is a variety of promenading on offer. Visitors should also allow some time for exploring the rest of the historic centre, set just back from the lake and protected by the town’s fortress. Still enclosed by the old town gateways, the heart of Riva is an atmospheric network of tall buildings and narrow lanes.

Riva has a town museum ( Museo Civico ) housed in its moated lakeshore castle (or fortress), the Rocca . The museum contains historical exhibits, paintings and also temporary exhibitions, which can be interesting. Alongside this sturdy fortress is a pleasant leafy park. A little tourist ‘train’ ( trenino ) starts here and does a very brief circuit of the town for those seeking more entertainment (it was full of merry pensioners when it passed).

One of Riva’s most striking buildings is the Torre Apponale , a tall clock-tower which dates to the thirteenth century. It looks down on Piazza III Novembre, the heart of town. The tower is open to the public, and climbing up the narrow steps is a good way to work off holiday ice-creams. There’s an admission charge, and you can buy a combined ticket with the town museum. Energetic over-65s wanting to climb the tower are rewarded with free admission. It’s a stiff-ish climb but the views are rewarding: the mountains and lake look pretty much as they did from ground-level, but the town and harbour are interesting seen from above, as are the various roof-tops, squares and hidden terraces of Riva.

Opposite the waterfront there is a chain of cafes where you can indulge in that classic Lake Garda activity: sitting with an ice-cream or drink and watching the world go by. There are plenty of eating and drinking establishments aimed at tourists, but further back from the waterfront, amid the narrow streets of Riva, you’ll find more ‘normal’ shops and businesses aimed at locals as well as visitors.

tourist office riva del garda

The northern end of the lake is incredibly popular with windsurfers, who take advantage of the strong wind systems caused by the mountains and water. Torbole, just along the lakeshore from Riva, is the principal base for windsurfing. In Riva it is possible to hire boats, or, for a less strenuous way of enjoying the water, there is a long beach suitable for sunbathing and swimming. Walkers can enjoy easy walks around town – such as the stroll along the lake towards Torbole – or longer hikes in the mountains around.

If you have a hire car, or are prepared to research the local buses (see our links on the right), you can travel into the mountains or up the valley from Riva, visiting interesting towns like nearby Arco and sights such as a waterfall a few miles to the north of Riva, the Cascata del Varone. Lake Ledro, a much smaller lake with a museum dedicated to its ancient lake-dwelling residents, makes a good excursion.

Visiting the other Lake Garda resorts is one of the principal Riva tourist activities. Both Limone and Malcesine are reachable by ferry or bus, and Malcesine gives the added option of taking the cable car up to the high ridge of Monte Baldo for views and walks.

A good place to stay?

Unlike some of the little, picturesque tourist resorts on the lake, Riva del Garda is definitely a proper town. This is handy if you want to seek out ‘local’ shops and atmosphere, but less quaint for holiday-makers. The surrounding mountains make it a practical base for exploring the area, and the Lake Garda ferries call regularly. Since this is the very tip of the long lake, journeys to the southern lake resorts are both time-consuming and costly: if you want to visit as many lakeside towns as possible, it would be better to stay nearer the lake’s centre. Although the mountains are easily accessible, Riva itself is largely built on the flat; along with the sedate atmosphere this makes it popular with older visitors, who promenade in the lakeside park. Younger travellers will find bars and the lively night-time atmosphere you’d expect in a holiday town of this size.

Riva del Garda transport

Riva del Garda is served by the regular Lake Garda ferries, and the other northern resorts – Torbole, Limone and Malcesine – are a reasonably short boat ride away. You can buy day tickets for either the whole lake or just this northern end. If you are travelling towards the southern end of the lake, be prepared to pay extra for the fast hydrofoil services, or to relax during a very long boat ride.

Riva del Garda is not quite as well-connected to Italy’s transport network as the southern lake towns, but it can still be reached by public transport. There are railway stations in Desenzano and Peschiera, and from either town you can take a bus or ferry up to Riva. There are also direct buses to Riva from the nearby cities of Verona and Brescia, both of which have airports with budget flights from the UK: Brescia Airport . There is also a railway station to the east in Rovereto, which is connected to Verona by rail.

In the summer there is a daily bus service to Venice for day-trippers, run by Verona firm APTV (see links panel). The journey time is between three and four hours, and Venice really merits more than a brief excursion, but if you’re desperate to see the lagoon city this is an opportunity. Verona, reachable by regular bus services, is a more convenient day-trip destination.

Riva del Garda accommodation

There is a good choice of places to stay in Riva, from extremely smart, large hotels to boutique B&BS. Not all of the local accommodation is close to the lake, so read descriptions and reviews carefully before booking. > Book a hotel in Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is the pearl of Lake Garda Its Mediterranean climate, wide sunny beaches and beautiful panorama are the right ingredients for an unforgettable holiday on Lake Garda – or more than one if you wish! Riva del Garda is the main centre of Northern Lake Garda. It is the ideal location for an eventful holiday. Sport is the main motivation for the holiday: sailing and windsurfing in the first instance, but also hiking, cycling, mountain biking, tennis, canoeing. The mild climate favours a typically Mediterranean vegetation with lemon trees, olive trees, laurels and palm trees: a true Mediterranean island at the foot of the Dolomites. The centre of Riva del Garda will fascinate you with its works of art and architecture, witnessing to ancient history and a past rich in art and culture. The tour of the city comprises visits to the following:

  • · the Rocca , at present hosting the city museum and art gallery;
  • · the Apponale tower , an ancient venue for commerce and fairs;
  • · the Pretorian Palace , hosting under its loggia Roman, medieval and modern memorial stones, and the historic Comune Palace;
  • ·The  churches of the Inviolata  and  S. Maria Assunta , important examples of Baroque architecture.
  • ·The  Hydro-electric power station , built in the 1920s to generate power from Lake Ledro which is channelled through a pressurized tunnel in the rock.

In times past, the city hosted famous names such as Nietzsche, Kafka and the Mann brothers. This exclusive yet familiar reception is still part of the tradition of the shores of Lake Garda. The hotels offer you top comfort and innovation together with warm, familiar hospitality and characteristic restaurants.

Riva del Garda is one of the largest cities on the shore of Lake Garda.

The view which opens in front of all visitors is simply stunning, and the way the mountain slopes down into the lake can only be deemed a source of huge aesthetic satisfaction.

Despite the fact the streets ensuring the access to the city are particularly crowded, and even if the road traffic within the city is quite an issue and, furthermore, even if parking lots are scarce and finding an available parking place can turn into a genuine adventure, Riva del Garda offers some specific means of transport which can mitigate the downsides described above.

Thus, the Riva del Garda port is an excellent starting point for tourists who want to explore the surroundings of the city by boat. In fact, most of the tourists coming to Lake Garda begin their journey into the wonderful world of the cities in the region in the very port of Riva del Garda, which is a feature of no little importance for the tourist reputation of the resort.

People who want to sunbathe in Riva del Garda must go to the east side of the port, where the best sunbathing venue is located. This is a place fitted with clean well-kept beaches.

Tourists keen on shopping must learn Riva del Garda is replete with fashionable boutiques and stores of famed European designers.

Feel good and relax in the pearl of lake garda.

If you’re traveling by train, get off at Rovereto station and, from there, you can continue on public transport, which connects it to the lake.

23 Best Things to Do in Riva del Garda on Italy’s Lake Garda

1. visit rocca di riva and explore mag in riva del garda, italy.

Rocca di Riva and MAG - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Rocca di Riva is one of the most important sights in Riva del Garda. This is a medieval fortress that stands on a small artificial island in the historic centre. The fortress is surrounded by water on all sides and a small bridge leads to its entrance.

Rocca di Riva was built in 1124 in order to protect the town’s important port. When Riva del Garda was taken over by the Scaliger dynasty of Verona in the 14th century, the fortress was enlarged and a deep moat was excavated around it. In the 15th century, Riva del Garda was annexed to the territories of the Republic of Venice. The town and its fortress bore witness to the battles between Venice and the Duchy of Milan.

By the 16th century, Rocca di Riva had changed completely its purpose and had become a residence. First, it hosted the Prince-Bishops of Trento  and then private individuals. Three centuries later, the fortress was turned into army barracks.

Nowadays, Rocca di Riva houses the Museum of Upper Garda . It has interesting archaeological, historical, and art sections introducing you to the history and the traditions of  Trentino  – the autonomous Northern Italian province of which Riva del Garda is part.

Walking through the historic centre of Riva del Garda, soon you will find yourself in front of the town’s centuries-old fortress. It enjoys a central lakefront position. Palm trees and fountains are strategically placed around its moat. All in all, Rocca di Riva is a must-see on the northern tip of Lake Garda in Italy.

2. Go for a Walk Through the Historic Centre of Riva del Garda, Italy

Piazza III Novembre with the Palazzo Municipale - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Riva del Garda has an elegant historic centre where Italian and Austrian influences meet and mix. Throughout history, the town has been ruled by many different powers – from the Scaligers of Verona and then the Republic of Venice to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As you can imagine, this has created a melting pot of architectural styles. The historic centre of Riva del Garda is the best place to see how it all has come together organically.

Surrounded by tall, jagged mountains and with streets flanked by multi-storey houses painted in yellow, ochre, and green, the historic centre here is a lively place. As you walk around, little details stand out. A historic coat of arms attached to a centuries-old wall, a frescoed top floor of a building, a balcony with countless pots of plants and flowering shrubs. The mountain tops peek at the end of each street. Water trickles and gushes from the town’s many fountains. The hubbub of people is never-ending. Locals and visitors pop in and out of the many shops and eateries, cross the large sunlit squares, head to the nearby beaches.

It’s all so beautiful. Quite idyllic, really. Especially on a sunny day!

Here are some of the most interesting sights and places to see in the historic centre of Riva del Garda:

  • Terme Romane – excavated remnants of the thermal baths that the Romans had built here in the 1st century AD.
  • Quartiere del Marocco – this is the oldest preserved part of the historic centre of Riva del Garda. It dates back to the Middle Ages. The large houses here stand against the slopes of Mount Rocchetta. The name – Marocco – comes from the local word for pebble, stone or rock.
  • Palazzo Municipale – built towards the end of the 15th century, this has been Riva del Garda’s civic assembly hall since 1492. You will find this large and imposing historic building on the main Piazza III Novembre. Fragments of the frescoes that once decorated the exterior of the palazzo can still be seen on its facade today.
  • Hydroelectrical Power Plant – open for guided visits, this is an enormous facility housed in a monumental building. Erected in the 1920s, it flanks the town’s historic harbour and it is one of the very first things that you see as you drive into Riva del Garda from the nearby town of Limone sul Garda.

3. Spend Time at the Pretty Squares of Riva del Garda, Italy

Piazza della Erbe - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Riva del Garda is dotted with pretty squares that are at the centre of the town’s social life. They are surrounded by historic buildings and lively eateries, buzzing with people and activity all throughout the day.

Sitting for a coffee or a meal at one of Riva del Garda’s squares is a very pleasant thing to do. You can engage in some people-watching, admire the surrounding architecture, relax, and enjoy the town’s verve.

Here are some of the most beautiful squares here to see for yourself:

  • Piazza III Novembre – a beautiful sunlit square in the heart of the historic centre. Surrounded by lavish hotels, historic buildings, and busy restaurants, it’s a lovely place to sit and take it all in. In the past, this is where the town’s fairs were held four times a year. The 34 meters high Torre Aponale dominates the square. Opposite it, you will see the historic Palazzo Municipale.
  • Piazza delle Erbe – a large and beautiful square in the style of the Italian Renaissance piazzas. It has a circular fountain at its heart. The square was built after the First World War. It replaced a group of houses that had been heavily bombed and had to be completely demolished.
  • Piazza Marocco – this ancient square stands in the heart of the oldest part of the historic centre of Riva del Garda. It is thought that a castle or a fortification must have existed here in the early Middle Ages. Look around to see fragments of the town’s ancient defensive walls that nowadays have been incorporated into the facades of the local houses.
  • Piazza Cavour – a large square next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. In the past, it was used for civic assemblies and hosted the town’s market.
  • Piazza Catena – this rectangular square flanks Riva del Garda’s historic harbour. Head to it if you want to take the ferry to a nearby lakefront town.

4. Visit the Churches in Riva del Garda, Italy

The Baroque Church of S. Maria Inviolata - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

There are several interesting from a historic and architectural point of view churches in Riva del Garda. Visiting them will give you a better understanding of the history of this pretty town. Inside, you can also see important works by local artists.

Here are some of the most beautiful churches in Riva del Garda:

  • Church of Santa Maria Inviolata – built in 1603, this is considered to be the most important Baroque church in the whole of Trentino . Its frescoed and stuccoed vault is a sight to behold. The altarpieces are by Palma the Younger – one of the most famous exponents of the Venetian School.
  • Church of Santa Maria Assunta – an imposing Baroque church built in 1728 on the site of a medieval church in the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.
  • Church of St. Roch – this church was built in the 16th century. It fulfilled an oath made by the inhabitants of Riva del Garda during a devastating bout of the plague in 1512. Richly stuccoed and decorated, the nave of the church was hit by a bomb during the First World War. Nowadays only its apse survives.

5. See the Historic Gates of Riva del Garda, Italy

Inside Porta San Giuseppe - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Centuries ago, a strong defensive wall used to surround Riva del Garda. Walking around the town’s historic centre, you will see surviving fragments from it and several tall and sturdy gates.

These are their names and the stories behind them:

  • Porta Bruciata – this is a vault that connects Piazza San Rocco with Piazza III Novembre. Originally, it was a gate in the ancient defensive wall. In 1475, the gate was incorporated into the building that joins the Palazzo Municipale and the Palazzo Pretorio. Its name – the Burned Gate – references a fire of which not much else is known.
  • Porta di San Marco – originally built during the Scaliger dynasty’s dominion of Riva del Garda, this large and imposing gate was then modified during the Venetian rule of the area.
  • Porta di San Michele – it stands at the end of the large Via Roma which connects the Church of Santa Maria Inviolata to Riva del Garda’s historic centre. Back in the 13th century, this gate was known as Porta d’Arco, as it’s orientated towards the nearby town of Arco. In the 19th century, it was subjected to a significant reconstruction by the then-mayor of the town.
  • Porta di San Giuseppe – this was once one of the oldest churches in town. The Church of San Giuseppe (also known as the Church of Disciplini) was erected in the 16th century at the spot where a hermit had lived in the 13th century. It had marble altars and many works of art. In recent times, the church was deconsecrated and hollowed. Nowadays, it serves as a pedestrian crossing – a sort of tunnel on a crossroads in the historic centre of Riva del Garda. Its facade is preserved and inside you can see the church’s original pillars and a small, quite damaged fresco.

6. Go for a Walk around the Two Harbours of Riva del Garda, Italy

The harbour with pedalos and the Hydroelectric station - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Centuries ago, Riva del Garda had one of the most important harbours on Lake Garda. A constant stream of boats brought goods and wares from the towns of Desenzano , Torbole, and Lazise. Wool, wood, cereals, ceramics, and even cattle. For hundreds of years, the flow of goods never stopped.

The harbour stands adjacent to the historic centre of Riva del Garda. Nowadays, it’s a great place to go for a walk, to catch the ferry to another lakefront town, and to hire a pedalo.

Further away from the historic centre and just past Riva del Garda’s beaches, you can also visit Porto San Nicolo’. Dozens of sailing boats moor here. If you want to rent a boat or a yacht for the day, this is the place to head to.

7. Get a Bird’s-Eye View of Riva del Garda, Italy

Bastione and funicular - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

If you are after bird’s-eye views, Riva del Garda more than delivers. There are several spots in and around town offering breathtaking panoramas from above. Here they are:

  • Torre Apponale – this is the 13th-century clocktower that dominates the skyline of Riva del Garda. Scale its 165 steps to admire panoramic views of the town and the lake from a height of 34 m.
  • Bastione and Funicular – the Bastione is an early-16th century fort that stands above Riva del Garda on the slopes of Mount Rocchetta. A brand new panoramic lift transports you from the town’s historic centre up to the fort. The views are breathtaking and you can continue to enjoy them from the bar and restaurant which nowadays operate inside the Bastione.
  • Mount Brione – this is the rocky hill that separates Riva del Garda from the neighbouring town of Torbole. A hiking path leads from Riva del Garda to the summit of Mount Brione. Up there you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views of Lake Garda.
  • Chapel of Santa Barbara – this is a tiny chapel built in 1925 at a height of 620 m. You can glimpse it from the historic centre. It’s like a dot on the lush slopes of Mount Rocchetta. You can hike to it, too in about an hour. The path first goes up to Bastione. So, if you prefer, you can take the funicular up to it and save yourself some of the uphill walking.

8. Go to the Beach in Riva del Garda, Italy

The entrance of the Spiaggia dei Olivi - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Lake Garda is a great place to go to the beach on a hot summer day. Riva del Garda is home to some of the nicest lake beaches for you to top your tan at.

Here are some of the most popular beaches in and around this lovely lakefront town:

  • Spiaggia dei Sabbioni – this is a free beach with grassy and pebbly areas. It has a kids’ playground and a large park next to it. There are bars, a restaurant, showers, and toilets.
  • Spiaggia dei Pini – this is a very popular local beach that attracts the young and hip crowd.
  • Spiaggia di Navene – this is one of my most favourite beaches on Lake Garda. It’s about 13 km away down the road from Riva del Garda. This is a pebbly beach next to the large sailing club Fraglia Vela Malcesine. It has a small olive grove right next to it, a playground for the kids to run around, a couple of benches and picnic tables, a swim raft challenging you to swim across to it, a pair of resident swans and a gaggle of ducks.

Most beaches around Lake Garda are covered in pebbles.  Suitable  beach shoes  both in and out of the water are recommended. Also, please, exercise caution when swimming here. As with every lake and body of water, it’s important to be careful and use common sense. Especially, as the water can get very deep very quickly at Lake Garda’s beaches.

9. Have Fun in and around Riva del Garda, Italy

Fountain in the historic centre - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Riva del Garda is a great place to visit if you want to experience fun and lively Italian events and festivals. This elegant town on the shores of Lake Garda has a rich calendar of happenings that take place all throughout the year.

Here are some of the most important ones:

  • Jump in the Canal – a lively festival held over two or three dates in summer. People flock to the small park next to the Rocca di Riva to listen to music, dance, and jump in the canal.
  • Garda Jazz Festival   – a famous jazz festival held in the first half of August at different locations around the northern extremity of Lake Garda.
  • Notte di Fiaba – a weekend in August dedicated to the most favourite stories and fairytales for children. Expect theatrical performances, creative workshops, and a large fireworks display.
  • Sailing Events – Riva del Garda hosts several sailing events each summer. Among them stand out the Riva Cup and Melges 24 .

10. Visit Reptiland in Riva del Garda, Italy

Reptiland - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Reptiland is a permanent exhibition of reptiles from all around the world. It is housed in a splendid historic building opposite Rocca di Riva in the town’s historic centre.

If herpetology is among your interests, Reptiland is a great place to visit. Personally, my interests don’t stretch that far. My family volunteered to visit Reptiland without me. They spent about an hour there and told me it was interesting to see the reptiles that are native to Trentino .

11. Marvel at the Waterfall in a Cave Near Riva del Garda, Italy

Inside Cascate del Varone - Riva del Garda, Trentino - www.rossiwrites.com

On the outskirts of Riva del Garda, you can visit the Varone Waterfall. Famously, this is a waterfall inside a cave! In other words, this is a mass of water that falls with great thunder through a 98-m high canyon.

You start your visit by walking inside the Lower Cave. A sinuous boardwalk is affixed to the rough rocky walls. Tiny droplets mist up the air. If you stand close to the railings, the water splashes you. For added effect, coloured lights tinge the constant stream in different shades.

The next stage of the experience is to walk up to the Upper Cave. A wide paved path snakes up the face of the hill taking you higher and higher above the valley below. Tall rugged mountains line up the horizon. The blue waters of Lake Garda glisten in the sun. The stunning views are complemented by the dozens of flowers, shrubs, and trees that have been planted along the path. It’s a veritable botanical garden!

At the end of the path is the much smaller Upper Cave. Inside it, there is a small platform. Standing on it, you can watch the waterfall thunder through the mountain. A local legend talks about a black horse that seems to surge forward from the waterfall. It sounds mad but just as my eyes adjusted from the bright light outside to the eternally dim atmosphere of the cave, I saw the well-defined head of a black horse appear in the sheet of water and rush towards me. Call it an optical illusion, if you like. I didn’t stop to have a good look or think it through. I just ran outside back into the light.

The Varone Waterfall is also close to the town of Arco, Lake Tenno, the medieval village of Canale’ di Tenno, and the archaeological site on Mount San Martino. You can visit them all in a day. Alternatively, you can drive to Lake Ledro after your visit to the waterfall.

Panoramic view of Riva del Garda and Mount Brione - Trentino, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Riva del Garda is a great starting point for many exciting hikes around Lake Garda, Italy. Here, there are many trails to suit all abilities – from flat paths that still afford beautiful panoramic views to Via Ferrata routes that require stamina and concentration.

Here are some picturesque paths and hiking experiences around Riva del Garda:

  • Strada del Ponale – a beautiful historic road that connects Riva del Garda to the nearby Lake Ledro. Ten km long, in the past it was the only way to reach the Valle di Ledro. Nowadays, it’s closed to cars and motor traffic. It is very popular with walkers and cyclists for the amazing views it opens over Lake Garda.
  • Busatte-Tempesta Trail – one of the most popular hikes around Lake Garda. It takes you high above the lake. Iron staircases with more than 400 steps in total are part of the trail. Affixed to steep rocky slopes, going up and down them gives you stunning bird’s-eye views of the water below and the mountains around you.
  • Mount Brione – this is the rocky hill that separates Riva del Garda from the neighbouring town of Torbole. We always joked that Mount Brione looked like someone had dropped a whole cake or a massive Oreo biscuit there and it half sunk into the lake while the other half got stuck almost upright in the air. A hiking path leads from Riva del Garda to the summit of Mount Brione. Up there you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views of Lake Garda and also see  the forts  that were built there between 1860 and the First World War.

Alternatively, you can join an organised hike and explore the beautiful surroundings of Riva del Garda as part of a group led by an experienced local guide. Here are some starting points:

  • Private Hiking Tour of Monte Baldo

Thanks to its location, Lake Garda enjoys a mild Mediterranean-style microclimate. This favours the local cultivation of olive and citrus trees. In addition, Riva del Garda and Trentino were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for just over a century between 1815 and 1918. This combination of geography and history has resulted in some truly delicious local dishes and foods.

Here are some traditional for Lake Garda foodstuffs and some traditional for Riva del Garda dishes and desserts to taste:

  • extra virgin olive oil – Lake Garda’s microclimate has favoured the cultivation of olive trees since ancient times. Nowadays, some of Italy’s best olive oils are produced here.
  • fresh fish from Lake   Garda – the lake waters team with fish – from common carps and eels to brown trouts and even pikes. The local restaurants serve a large variety of fish dishes. Sample as many as you can if fish is something you love to eat.
  • black truffles  – found on the slopes of Monte Baldo, you can see stalls selling these fragrant tubers at local events and Christmas markets around Lake Garda.
  • peaches  – Lake Garda is famous for its peach orchards which thrive thanks to the lake’s mild microclimate.
  • kiwi  – the kiwis grown around Lake Garda help Italy maintain its position as the world’s second-largest producer of kiwi fruit.
  • citrus fruit  – citrus trees were introduced around Lake Garda in the 14th century by the Franciscan monks. Nowadays, large citrus fruit gardens – called  limonaia  – flourish on the lake shores. Don’t miss a chance to sample the locally grown lemons and oranges.
  • chestnuts – the famous chestnuts of the town of San Zeno di Montagna (about an hour away from Riva del Garda) are particularly tasty and enjoy a Protected Designation of Origin status. They are the fruit of centuries-old forests that grow around this little town on the slopes above Lake Garda.
  • goulash trentino – the local version of the traditional Hungarian goulash. It is customarily served with canederli  – bread dumplings often made with speck and cheese.
  • Luganega sausage – long pork sausage which is often served split open and grilled with a side of potatoes or chips, polenta, and forest mushrooms.
  • kaiserschmarrn – thick pancakes studded with raisins and sprinkled with sugar.

20. Take the Cable Car to the Top of Monte Baldo near Riva del Garda, Italy

Sunset over Lake Garda seen from the snow-capped Monte Baldo in winter - Malcesine, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Monte Baldo is an Alpine mountain chain that shelters the eastern shores of Lake Garda. Known as the Garden of Europe for its remarkable botanical diversity, the mountain is crisscrossed by hiking paths and it is a delight to explore.

The Funivia Monte Baldo gives you a chance to quickly get to the top of the mountain. This is a rotating cable car the ground station of which is less than 25 mins away from Riva del Garda. It stands right next to the lakefront town of Malcesine and it has a spacious car park adjacent to it. The ride is truly spectacular as it opens panoramic views over the whole northern half of Lake Garda.

Taking the cable car is one of the very best things to do around the lake. It’s a very emotional experience that leaves you with impressions to last you a lifetime. Once up there, you can spend some time just taking it all in, you can go for a hike, or – in winter – you can ski and snowboard, too!

Bear in mind that Monte Baldo’s cable car is a very popular attraction. During the high season, long queues tend to form. If you only have a limited amount of time to spend at Lake Garda, either buy your ticket online in advance or head to the ticket office as soon as possible to book your time slot.

The journey to the top of Monte Baldo is split in two. The first cable car takes you to the station of San Michele at a height of 560 m. The views of the town of Malcesine as the cable car smoothly glides uphill are soul-inspiring. You feel like you are flying over the red rooftops which slowly grow smaller and smaller and the enormous expanse of Lake Garda fills the panorama with its sparkling blue colours.

At San Michele, you take a second cable car that is bigger and even swisher than the first. While you wait, an open-air platform provides even more stunning views. Board the second cable car and don’t worry about trying to bag the best spot inside for panoramic views and pictures. The cable car slowly swivels around its axe providing a 360 degrees view thus giving everyone on board the chance to enjoy it from all possible angles.

After a short but exhilarating ascent, the cable car stops at a modern terminal at a height of 1760 m. In summer, people go there to practice sports – hiking, paragliding, Nordic walking, and mountain biking – or simply to take in the beautiful views. In winter, you can ski, snowboard or sledge.

Things to Do Riva del Garda Lake Garda Italy

Riva del Garda is a picturesque town located on the north end of Lake Garda. With colorful buildings, medieval towers, and narrow alleyways, this is a wonderful place to go for leisurely stroll. From Riva del Garda, you can also take your pick from short hiking trails that lead up into the mountains, visit medieval towns and archaeological sites, and see a waterfall tucked away in a hidden grotto.

In this guide, we cover the best things to do in Riva del Garda with tips to have the best experience.

Table of Contents

Overview of Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is a small town that sits on the northern tip of Lake Garda.

The ancient walls, gates, and fortress remains from medieval times. Rocca is a medieval fortress with a moat and drawbridge that sits on the shore of the lake. Inside of this fortress is the MAG – Museo Alto Garda and visiting this museum is one of the best things to do in Riva del Garda.

Riva del Garda was one of our favorite towns on Lake Garda, even beating the uber popular Sirmione. On the north end of Lake Garda, the crowds were lower and the views from the towers and nearby mountains were beautiful, making this our favorite area of Lake Garda.

How to Use This Map: Click the tab in the top left hand corner of the map to view the layers (places to go and where to stay). You can click the check marks to hide or show layers. If you click the icons on the map, you can get more information about each point of interest.   If you click the star next to the title of the map, this map will be added to your Google Maps account. To view it on your phone or computer, open Google Maps, click the menu button, go to “Your Places,” click Maps, and you will see this map on your list.

Best Things to Do in Riva del Garda

Below we list the best things to do in and around Riva del Garda. This town is a great home base for exploring the sights located on the north end of Lake Garda, so a few things on this list are located outside of town.

Stroll through the Historic City Center

The city center of Riva del Garda is small and easily walkable. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk from one end to the other and along the way, you will wander through narrow, colorful streets, past piazzas and promenades, and the medieval towers and gates.

Two medieval city gates still stand in Riva del Garda, Porta San Marco and Porta di San Michele.

Piazza 3 Novembre is a small piazza that sits on one of several harbors in Riva del Garda. Here, brightly painted buildings line the square and Torre Apponale towers over the square.

This was once the economic heart of Riva del Garda, with banks and merchants operating their businesses from the buildings that still line this square. Now, fairs and outdoor festivals are held here.

Catena Square sits just across the harbor from Piazza 3 Novembre. From here, you have more great views of Lake Garda and you can go shopping or dine at one of the restaurants that line this square. And Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi is another lovely spot in Riva del Garda.

Climb Torre Apponale

Climb the 165 wooden stairs to the top of Torre Apponale for one of the best views of Riva del Garda. From this medieval watchtower, you can see the entire city and look out over Lake Garda.

Despite huge crowds in and around Lake Garda, we had this all to ourselves. It is a beautiful view and one of our favorite things to do in Riva del Garda.

Cost: €2 which can be purchased at the base of the tower.

Visit the MAG – Museo Alto Garda

This museum contains art by 19th century painters, artifacts dating back to the Copper age, and exhibits portraying the history of Riva del Garda. There are also temporary exhibits throughout the year.

This museum is located inside of Rocca of Riva, the medieval fortress. One of the best things to do while visiting the museum is to climb to the top of the Mastio, the large tower that is part of the fortress.

For more information, hours of operation, and pricing, visit the official website.

Ride the Funicular to Bastione di Riva

On the west side of town, you can ride the glass funicular to Bastione. The Bastione is the remains of a Venetian tower. From here, you have panoramic views of Riva del Garda and the north end of Lake Garda. There is also a restaurant and bar here (the Bastione Lounge and Restaurant), where you can have lunch or dinner with a view.

The funicular is a glass box. This makes for great views on the ride up and down, but in the summer, it is terribly hot! It’s only a 3-minute ride but it feels like torture in the summer months. However, it is still better than hiking up to the Bastione.

Visiting the Bastione is free but there is a fee to ride the funicular.

Hike to Chapel Santa Barbara

This short, tough hike takes you from town to a small chapel that sits on the hillside, overlooking Riva del Garda. To get here, it is a 3.3 km (2 mile) hike that takes two and a half hours. It’s a steep uphill hike to get to the chapel and then a downhill walk, on the same path, to get back to Riva del Garda.

Your reward is more panoramic views of Riva del Garda and the opportunity to visit a small chapel built on a mountain cliff.

This challenging, somewhat dangerous hike takes you to an incredible viewpoint of Lake Garda. We did this and recommend it for those who are fit, have hiking experience, and want to visit one of the best viewpoints of Lake Garda.

To get to the Punta Larici viewpoint, it is a constant uphill walk and at times it is very steep. There are sections of this hike where you are walking along a cliff edge and one misstep could be disastrous. It’s not a hike to bring young kids or to do if you have a fear of heights.

Parking for the Punta Larici Hike

The parking lot is located in Pregasina, a tiny town located on the northwest end of Lake Garda.

The final drive through town is on a narrow, twisting, one lane road through town.

There are just a handful of parking spots, so get here early, to make sure you get a space. There are a few spots at the church and in a small lots below the church. The best place to park is in the main lot below the church but if that is full, if you drive another 50 meters, there is one more smaller lot (GPS Coordinates: 45°51’00.5″N 10°49’26.7″E ). We arrived at 7:20 am and got the second to last spot in the second smaller lot, as the first lot was already filled.

Punta Larici Parking

IMPORTANT!! You must have good driving skills for this drive and be able to drive in reverse on a very narrow road, in case you encounter oncoming traffic.

The Hike to Punta Larici

From Pregasina, the hike starts off with a relatively uphill easy walk along a road. Once it enters the woods, the trail changes to a narrow dirt path and the difficulty skyrockets. Not only is the trail steep but you are also occasionally hiking along drop-offs, so you must really watch your step.

Once you make it to Punta Larici, also called Cima Larici, you have 360° views of Lake Garda.

Route to Punta Larici

Over the course of the 2.2 km hike to get to Punta Larici, there are numerous junctions and the trail changes numbers and names several times. Tim took notes along the way and here is our trail guide:

  • The trailhead is at the church (Chiesa Parrochiale di San Giorgio).
  • At about 0.3 km (0.2 miles) there is a trail junction where you want to turn left and follow Trail 422B (Bocca Larici).
  • At about 0.8 km (0.5 miles) there is another trail junction. Here you can go straight to stay on 422B, which goes through the trees. Or you can turn left and follow a road that runs parallel to 422B but stays closer to the side of the cliff. Don’t turn right at this junction as doing so will take you onto private property. We turned left and it offered one view out over the lake almost immediately.
  • At about 1.1 km (0.7 miles) there is another trail junction (Calcherole). This is where the two trails from the previous split rejoin. You can go left for the more strenuous and adventurous path along the side of the cliff (Trail 422A to Cima Larici/Bocca Larici) or follow the signs for Trail 422B which is an easier route. We turned left and followed Trail 422A.
  • When following Trail 422A, you will reach another trail junction at about 2.1 km (1.3 miles) from the trailhead. Turn left at this junction to go to Punta Larici.
  • From here it only takes another 0.15 km (0.1 miles) until you arrive at Punta Larici.

Walk or Bike the Old Ponale Road

The Old Ponale Road was the original road that connected Riva del Garda to the west side of Lake Garda. This old road has been converted into a walking and biking path along the river and a newer road for vehicles, with a series of tunnels, now runs along the northwestern end of Lake Garda.

The Old Ponale Road runs along the lakeshore of Lake Garda. Along the way, it passes through a series of tunnels from WWI. It ends at the Ponale waterfall, 3 km from Riva del Garda.

Ponale Road | Best Things to do in Riva del Garda

Old Ponale Road | shutterstock.com/SusaZoom

You can walk or bike the Old Ponale Road. Starting at Piazza Catena, follow signs for the Giacomo Cis trail. The wide road will twist and turn along the shoreline and you will pass through tunnels and be treated to great views of Lake Garda.

We did not do this (we had limited time and chose to do the Punta Larici hike instead) but it looks like a great experience. It’s not too challenging, the views are magnificent, and it’s a great for all ages.

Italy Travel Guide Dolomites

Visit Villa Canale (Borgo Medioevale di Canale)

Take a step back in time and explore the medieval town of Villa Canale.

This was one of our favorite experiences, not only in Riva del Garda, but all of Lake Garda.

Located in the hills above Riva del Garda is a tiny medieval village called Villa Canale. Cobblestoned streets weave their way between the old stone buildings that are hundreds of years old.

It takes about 30 minutes to walk through town. It is a delight to stroll and fun to photograph. There are even some great viewpoints over Riva del Garda and Lake Garda.

Borgo Medioevale di Canale | Best Things to do in Riva del Garda

View from Villa Canale

While here, you also have the option to walk down to Lago di Tenno, and small, emerald green lake that makes a beautiful swimming spot in the summer.

PARKING: We parked in a parking lot on Via Villa Sant’Antonio. The lot can hold about 10 cars and there is a small fee for parking. Here are the GPS coordinates of the lot: 45°55’48.5″N 10°49’29.6″E .   From the lot, follow the sign to Borgo Medioevale di Canale, which will take you up some steps for a quick walk through the woods before arriving at the medieval town.

Visit Parco Grotta Cascate Varone

This was one of our least favorite experiences but I am mentioning it because it is a very popular thing to do in Lake Garda.

Parco Grotta Cascate Varone is a very small botanical garden with a series of waterfalls. The main thing to do here is to walk the short boardwalk trail into the grotto for a view of the waterfall.

It’s a great summertime activity, because the grotto is cool and damp, and you will get a little wet from the spray of the waterfall.

But it is also extremely crowded during the summer months.

We could not find parking here, so Tim dropped me and Kara off and we visited the park as he circled, unsuccessfully, to find a parking space.

There was a line, a very slow-moving line, to get into the grotto. It took us 20 minutes to make it to the viewpoint of the grotto. It’s not a bad place to wait in line, since it is cool and protected from the sun, but I don’t think the view of the waterfall is good enough to justify a long wait in line.

While in the park, you can also visit the upper terraces and take photos of the other waterfalls next to the gardens.

Parco Grotta Cascate Varone

One of the waterfalls you can see in the park.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: For the best experience, go at opening time or the last few hours of the day, for the lowest crowds. Avoid middays during the summer months, which is when we visited the park.

For pricing and hours of operation, visit the official website.

Hike to the Top of Monte Brione

Monte Brione is a mountain that sits between Riva del Garda and Torbole. For more panoramic views of Lake Garda, you can hike up to the top of Monte Brione.

This hike is done as a loop and is 5.8 km (3.6 miles) round trip with 300 meters (1,000 feet) of elevation gain, making it moderately strenuous.

Go Windsurfing

During the summer months, an afternoon breeze blows from Lake Garda to Riva del Garda and Torbole, making this an excellent spot to go windsurfing.

If this sounds like something you would like to do, learn more on the Garda Trentino website.

How Much Time do You Need in Riva del Garda?

If you want to do everything we listed above, which includes several day hikes, you will need two to three full days in Riva del Garda.

If you Only Have A Few Hours in Riva del Garda

If you are passing through Riva del Garda on a visit Lake Garda, what should you do?

Our favorite experiences were exploring the town (which takes about 2 hours) and visiting the medieval town of Villa Canale (you will need a car to get here). Even though we didn’t do it, the walk/bike along the Old Ponale Road looks spectacular and it’s much easier to do than the Punta Larici hike.

What We Did

On day 1, we drove from Selva di Val Gardena, in the Dolomites, to Riva del Garda. On the drive, we visited Villa Canale and Parco Grotta Cascate Varone before entering Riva del Garda. We spent the afternoon exploring the city center of Riva del Garda.

On day 2, we hiked to Punta Larici early in the morning. Mid-morning, we left Riva del Garda and drove along the east side of Lake Garda, ending in Sirmione, spending two nights here. For more information about Sirmione, read our article Best Things to Do in Sirmione.

For our full itinerary, take a look at our Lake Garda Itinerary, which has suggestions on how to plan your time, whether you just have a day or two or longer.

Where to Stay in Riva del Garda

LUXURY: Lido Palace. This 5-star hotel is located right on Lake Garda. Some rooms have views of the lake and the hotel has a spa, two swimming pools, several restaurants, and a Turkish bath.

UPSCALE: Du Lac Et Du Parc Grand Resort. This is where we stayed. This large resort has several restaurants, several pools, and a great location right on the lake. It is also within walking distance of the city center. It’s a good pick if you are traveling as a family and want a resort experience. Rooms were outdated and in many ways, this looked and felt more like a 3-star hotel. I still think it’s worth recommending, because of its amenities and great location.

UPSCALE: Parc Hotel Flora. This hotel is located next to Du Lac Et Parc Grand Resort, so it also has a great location, and it gets better reviews. Rooms are beautifully decorated and some rooms can accommodate up to four people.

MID-RANGE: Garda Life. This modern hotel is located in town. It does not have beach or waterfront access, but it still has a great location in that you can walk right to the city center. This hotel gets outstanding reviews on Booking.com.

BUDGET: Garni Hotello Sport and Relax. Located within walking distance of the city center, this small hotel has single rooms, double rooms, and a one-bedroom apartment. The hotel offers free parking.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: If you are visiting during the summer months, make sure your hotel has air conditioning.

any good recommendations for restaurants for lunch in Riva Del Garda if we will be there for half a day and same for Sirmione and Melcesine? We will be driving down from the dolomites after a five day trek on the Alta Via 1 and are actually staying 2 nights in Limone sul garda but will stop at villa Canale for a walk around and Riva del Garda for lunch and a walk around before headed to our hotel in Limone sul Garda. Next day we will take a boat trip over to Melcesine. The day we leave to drive to Florence we will also stop for lunch in Sirmione. We will have dinner both nights in Limone sul Garda (so you can give restaurant recommendations for there also please. We opted for Limone Sul Garda as it is a bit smaller and the hotels were cheaper but we will still get to see Riva Del Garda and Melcesine etc.

Hello Justine. In Riva del Garda, we had lunch at Ristorante Piccadilly bar, which is a very small restaurant a short walk from the harbor area. The food came out fast and it was good, with reasonable prices, but nothing fancy. We tried to have lunch at the Bastione Lounge and Restaurant but got here right after food stopped being served. This is a great spot because you can look out over Riva del Garda over lunch. We didn’t eat in Malcesine. We had lunch at Ristorante Torri, in Torri del Benaco, which is a short drive south of Malcesine. And in Sirmione, we only ate at our hotel (for dinner 2 nights), since most of the time we were driving around Lake Garda and eating in other cities. You can check Trip Advisor for restaurant recommendations in each town. We pick out a lot of restaurants this way, or pick restaurants that get a 4.4 or higher rating on Google. I hope you have an awesome trek in the Dolomites and a wonderful time at Lake Garda! Cheers, Julie

To improve access from residences and hotels farther afield, the provincial authority operates four bus routes [dead link] reaching as far as neighbouring municipalities.
