Well, travel trailers come in all different sizes, shapes and weights but most SUVs and pickups will be able to haul a travel trailer that is under 4000 lbs with ease. So trailers that are under 4000 lbs, are the perfect size to transport without needing a particularly large vehicle.

Advantages of having a travel trailer

Lower cost than a bigger motorhome.

One of the biggest advantages of having a travel trailer is that it’ll cost less than a full-size RV.

Class A Motorhomes are absolutely fantastic things to have however they’re mightily expensive and even smaller RVs like a Class C can still be pretty pricey. A travel trailer won’t cost as much although you’ll obviously not have the same kind of living space or facilities however for a couple of nights away they are ideal for many people.

You can unhitch it at the campsite

Unlike other RVs that are one complete vehicle, you can detach a travel trailer at the campsite and go off in your SUV or pick up truck and explore the local area.

This is great because it means if you do want to go offer and see some sights near where you are staying, you don’t need to tow the trailer with you. It also doesn’t take up as much room as the bigger motorhomes.

Some RVs and motorhomes can be hard to maneuver so being able to unhitch a travel trailer and drive in your vehicle like normal is a big bonus.

rv

Insurance is usually lower

As travel trailers are smaller and don’t have as many expensive features like the bigger motorhomes on the market, your insurance costs shouldn’t be as high.

You can choose to insure a motorhome the same way you would any kind of vehicle although many liability insurance plans can be extended to your travel trailer and there is no legal requirement to purchase additional insurance (it is a good idea to check where you live to ensure this is accurate).

What to look for in a travel trailer

Before you get into our list of the best travel trailers that you can buy that weigh under 4000 lbs, there are some things to look out for first.

Instead of just purchasing the first trailer you see, think about these points before you buy.

Compared to other motorhomes, a travel trailer is at the smaller end of the scale.

That being said, you still need to consider the size of the trailer related to your needs and look for more storage space. Some will be bigger than others and offer a bit more extra sleeping space so you can sleep comfortably. Much of this will depend on how many people are going to be sleeping in and using the trailer.

Always look at the floor plans and decide on what you’re going to be bringing with you as well because even though they aren’t the biggest motorhome, you don’t want it to be too cramped.

Drainage system

RV plumbing and drainage is an important thing to consider and is often overlooked.

Travel trailers often have different setups depending on their size. Larger travel trailers may have a toilet system more akin to an RV however the smaller models might have a porta potti design.

This is something you should have a look at before you make a purchase to ensure the toilet and drainage system is right for your needs.

Other features

Although travel trailers are at the smaller end of the scale when it comes to motorhomes, you would be surprised what it can actually hold in terms of space and different features.

For example, you’ll want some kind of cooking facilities and most travel trailers have a microwave (or at least the space for a microwave) alongside a stove. Also, consider whether or not you need a dinette. The more things you want in a travel trailer then the likelihood is you’ll get more space that will increase so this will add to the overall weight.

Can it go off-road?

Finally, think about whether you want a sturdy travel trailer that is able to go off the beaten track.

If you are just planning on visiting well-connected campsites and routes then you don’t really need to worry. However, if you are planning on going off-road to some far flung parts of the country, you’ll need a travel trailer that can withstand this.

Not every trailer will have the durability for this kind of activity so make sure you take this into consideration before you purchase.

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Lbs

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs are starting to get bigger than those under 3000- or 2000 lbs . They're still small enough, but with the extra weight comes that bit of extra space and of course a bit more of the home comforts.

They give you that base and allow you to get away from the grind of the city and surround yourself with nature whenever you so please.

Smaller trailers have their advantage and of course drawbacks, and this is where getting a slightly bigger travel trailer under 4000 lbs gives you other advantages.

In this article, we have reviewed some of the best travel trailers under 4000 lbs. We also look at the advantages of owning a trailer this size so you can make a more informed decision before you go shopping.

What Makes a Quality Travel Trailer Under 4000 Lbs?

When considering your buying options for travel trailer under 4000 lbs, there's many things to consider. They're bigger than the lighter trailers so you will get more luxuries, but there are aspects to consider with every trailer you go for.

Solid Construction

The materials and construction of any travel trailer are significant. Even if your vehicle is small, it must have durable, sturdy, and soundproof walls. The insulation that comes from good construction not only helps maintain the structure intact when the weather gets terrible, but also keeps you warm, dry, and free of unwanted noise.

Good Floor Plan

A well-designed floor plan is important because it adds to the weight of the travel trailer. Some people prefer to include household features like as a dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and storage in their space.

Some campers have a stove, an off-the-ground sleeping area, solar panels, entertainment equipment, and so on. All of this adds weight to the equation, so a suitable floor plan may assist you in achieving a manageable weight for your trailer while also allowing you to keep the travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

Innovative and Modular Design

With such a restricted weight capacity, storage may be difficult. If at all feasible, the floor plan and components should be modular so that it is not just breathable but also pleasant. Convertible sofa beds are an excellent example of this. This makes room for more people without taking up important space inside the camper van.

Advantages of Having a Travel Trailer That’s Under 4000 lbs

sonic travel trailer under 4000 lbs

Greater Comfort

Another advantage of these travel trailers is that they have almost all the basic amenities with a few more luxuries thrown in. From a comfortable sleeping space to a built-in dinette, there's everything you need for daily living . So, you get to stay in your comfort zone even when you are away from home.

Fuel Saving

As these travel trailers have a moderate weight, they need lesser power to tow. This puts a lesser strain on your engine, and it does not have to consume any extra fuel. This lowers the need for fuel, cutting down on costs just as gas prices are going astronomical.

10 Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Cover

Sharing is caring!

Lightweight travel trailers under 4000 lbs have many advantages. Typically smaller and more compact, these RVs are easy to tow and park. But there is a tradeoff. Less square footage also means manufacturers are forced to pick and choose which amenities to include and which to skip. Thankfully, innovative floorplans and advancements in manufacturing are revolutionizing the lightweight camper industry.

There are more lightweight camper options on the market now than ever before. We’ve listed our favorite travel trailers under 4000 lbs to help you choose which is best for you.

What’s the Difference Between Dry Weight and GVWR?

What’s the Difference Between Dry Weight and GVWR

When talking about camper weight, it’s important to distinguish between dry weight and GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating. Dry weight refers to how much the camper weighs when it rolls off the production line. This measurement doesn’t consider any fluids or other cargo on board.

Alternately, GVWR refers to the maximum total safe weight of the camper as advised by the manufacturer. Always reference GVWR when looking at your vehicle’s towing capacity and your camper’s carrying capacity.

Dry weight can be a noteworthy statistic. But GVWR refers to the total amount the camper weighs as it rolls down the road and is, therefore, the more important measurement. That’s why we only included travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR is on our list of the best lightweight campers.

The Importance of Towing Beneath Your Vehicle’s Tow Capacity

Importance of Towing Beneath Your Vehicle’s Tow Capacity

If you exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity, the results can be disastrous. An overloaded towing setup can cause the travel trailer to sway. This, in turn, can cause you to crash. If you get into an accident, insurance companies often refuse to pay once they learn you’ve exceeded your vehicle’s towing capacity.

Even if you avoid an accident, towing beyond your limits can damage the vehicle. Overloading your tow vehicle can strain the engine and transmission and cause your brakes and tires to wear faster.

A good rule of thumb is to choose a camper with GVWR at 90% or below your vehicle’s towing capacity for extra safety. For travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR, you’ll want to choose a vehicle with a tow rating of at least 4,444 lbs.

  • CCC: 805 or 910 lbs.

The Sol Dawn is InTech’s unique take on a teardrop camper. Its unique design boasts more headroom and more natural light than traditional teardrops. This is partly because of the classic InTech front panoramic window that spans the front of the camper.

Surrounded by this window is the multi-configurable U-shaped dinette. You can use this space to dine or as two twin beds. Simply pivot the table, and you can create a space that’s a half bed and half dinette. A final option is to drop the table down and create one large oversized bed. Beyond the versatility of the front seating/sleeping area, the Sol Dawn boasts one of the best wet baths on the market. The door is double-sealed to prevent any water leakage. ⛔ Storage space is in short supply in this teardrop camper.

  • UVW: 2,320 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 240 lbs.
  • Length: 17.2 ft.
  • CCC: 1,180 lbs.

From the outside, this travel trailer under 4000 lbs resembles other traditional teardrops. But unlike other teardrop campers, the Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max’s kitchen is located inside rather than in an outdoor back hatch.

You might worry that the Mini Max would feel less spacious by moving the kitchen inside than some of its counterparts. Surprisingly, Min Max creates an open floorplan by tucking the kitchen and bathroom under the camper’s curved front wall.

The main bed that converts into a dinette by day is another feature that opens up the Mini Max floor plan. Couples who love the look and aerodynamic benefits of a teardrop, but the openness of a traditional travel trailer, will love the Little Guy Mini Max.

6. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX Floorplan

✅ The Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX boasts sleeping space for five, making it a great lightweight camper for big families.

⛔ Despite its nearly 22-foot length, the Ultra Lite 16BHX has a smaller-than-average dinette that may be a tight fit for a large family.

  • UVW: 3,144 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 370 lbs.
  • Length: 21.6 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,870 lbs.
  • CCC: 726 lbs.

At nearly 22 feet in length, the Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX is one of the longest on our list of the best travel trailers under 4000 lbs. Palomino expertly uses that space to create a floor plan perfect for families. With bunk beds, a dinette bed, and a front queen bed, this RV easily accommodates a family of five.

In addition to the ample sleeping room, young families will also appreciate the tub shower in the bathroom. Unlike many other compact campers that only offer a wet bath, the Puma Ultra Lite has a tub/shower combo large enough to give little ones a bath.

The RV is great for families because of the sleeping and bathroom arrangement. But, you’ll find the tradeoff is that the Puma Ultra Lite offers only a limited amount of kitchen storage and a smaller-than-typical dinette. Still, this camper under 4000 lbs could be a perfect choice for families that prefer outdoor picnic table meals.

7. Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH Exterior

✅ This versatile travel trailer with bunk beds and a large dinette is great for families.

⛔ This Jay Flight has no dedicated owner’s bedroom space. Instead, it boasts an oversized dinette that transforms into a bed at night.

  • UVW: 2,810 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 250 lbs.
  • Length: 18 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,600 lbs.
  • CCC: 790 lbs.

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH is another great family travel trailer under 4000 lbs. Measuring nearly four feet shorter, this Jay flight offers many of the same features of the Palomino in an even smaller footprint.

You’ll find sturdy, plywood-constructed bunk beds that each accommodate up to 300 pounds. Unlike the bunks in other small campers, these are 80% enclosed. This is a great setup for younger children because it safeguards against rolling and provides a less distracting sleep environment.

Like the Palomino, this Jay Flight also has a convenient tub/shower combo. One difference you’ll notice between the Palomino and the Jay Flight is the latter has a much larger and deeper dinette. Parents will have to transform the dinette into a bed each night. But for families that don’t mind this extra step and appreciate a table that can seat the whole crew, the Jay Flight SLX 154BH is a great choice.

8.  Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17BH

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17BH Exterior

✅ The Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is one of the only teardrop campers to sleep four and offer bunk beds.

⛔ Although this travel trailer is large by teardrop standards, it isn’t quite large enough to incorporate a dry bath. Instead, you’ll find a shower/toilet combo situated right in the middle of your living space.

  • UVW: 2,360 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 320 lbs.
  • GVWR: 3,320 lbs.
  • CCC: 760 lbs.

The Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is an exceptional travel trailer under 4000 lbs. It’s rare to find a teardrop camper that sleeps more than two, but this Bushwhacker Plus does just that.

All of the sleeping spaces in this travel trailer are tucked under the lowest curved parts of the ceiling. This allows you to enjoy the aerodynamic and fuel-efficient benefits of the teardrop shape without sacrificing headroom in the main living space.

The bunks span the width of the front of the camper, while the main bed/dinette spans the back. While in dinette mode, the table pivots so you can easily fit the whole family. The dinette’s proximity to the entertainment hookups also means everyone can relax and watch a movie together. Teardrop campers are not often considered family RVs, but the Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is the exception.

9. Forest River No Boundaries (NOBO) 10.6

Forest River No Boundaries NOBO 10.6 Exterior

✅ This compact toy hauler can go anywhere and boasts both a low GVWR and a large CCC.

⛔ This no-frills toy hauler lacks both a bathroom and an indoor kitchen space.

  • UVW: 2,255 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 288 lbs.
  • Length: 13.10 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,788 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,533 lbs.

Like all No Boundaries campers by Forest River, the NOBO 10.6 is designed to go anywhere. Offroad tires, an enclosed underbelly, and a torsion flex axle with independent suspension allow this small camper to be towed just about anywhere. Once off the beaten path, boondockers will appreciate the space for two deep cycle batteries and the included solar prep.

Designed to get you out and enjoying the great outdoors, this travel trailer under 4000 lbs has an exclusively outdoor kitchen. Interior space is reserved for a basic sofa that transforms into a bed. The simplicity of the interior floorplan means you can easily stack or remove the cushions to make room for a dirt bike or four-wheeler.

When you aren’t offroading, you’ll love the ample outdoor living space offered in the NOBO 10.6. You can choose to sleep beneath the stars in the optional rooftop tent. You can also add a batwing canopy that wraps around half the trailer and triples the outdoor entertainment space. True adventures and nature enthusiasts will appreciate all the NOBO 10.6 offers.

10. KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch

KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch Exterior

✅ The KZ RV Escape E17 hatch is a versatile trailer with room for four.

⛔ This narrow trailer offers a smaller than typical garage space as compared to other toy haulers of this length.

  • UVW: 3,320 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 550 lbs.
  • Length: 22 ft.
  • GVWR: 4,000 lbs.
  • CCC: 680 lbs.

The KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch is an unconventional and very versatile toy hauler trailer under 4000 lbs. Like other toy haulers, the back area of this camper converts from a garage to a living space. However, the hatch feature is unique compared with a typical toy hauler’s ramp.

Although this hatch provides a nice secondary awning for outdoor living, the lack of a ramp makes loading heavier vehicles difficult. Since the carrying capacity and garage space are both small, it’s best to stick to hauling toys like bikes and kayaks in this small travel trailer. Still, the convenient back hatch makes loading and unloading these toys and other camping essentials much easier.

What the Escape E17 lacks in garage space makes up for in interior amenities. The modern farmhouse decor gives the camper an upscale feel. The huge wardrobe, full-length pantry, and large refrigerator are all features not typically found in other toy haulers at this price point.

In many ways, this small travel trailer under 4000 lbs GVWR is the best of both the toy hauler and traditional travel trailer worlds.

Why Would You Want a Lightweight Trailer?

Why Would You Want a Lightweight Trailer

Lightweight trailers are easily towable behind mid-sized SUVs and small trucks. They are also more fuel-efficient and budget-friendly. Lightweight travel trailers are also usually on the smaller side. This makes them easier to park and store than their larger, heavier counterparts.

As much as a compact floorplan can be an advantage of a lightweight trailer, it can also be a disadvantage. A smaller footprint means that lightweight trailers cannot offer all of the features and amenities that larger campers boast.

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a 4000 lbs Travel Trailer?

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a 4000 lb Travel Trailer

One of the great things about lightweight travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR is that a wide variety of vehicles can tow them.

Mid-sized SUVs with tow ratings of just 5,000 lbs. will pull the campers on our list just fine. Quarter-ton pickup trucks are also great tow vehicles for small travel trailers.

Whether you prefer the extra seating of an SUV, the extra cargo space of a pickup, or you simply want to use a vehicle you already own; you’ll appreciate the flexibility in a vehicle that a lighter travel trailer affords you.

Can You Travel Comfortably in a Lightweight Camper?

Can You Travel Comfortably in a Lightweight Camper

They sometimes say “less is more,” and we think that can definitely be the case with small travel trailers. Although they may not boast the storage capacity of other rigs, you can certainly fit all of your essentials in any one of these small campers.

What more do you need really? After all, most RVers are drawn to the lifestyle, at least in part by a desire to lead a more simplified and less stressful life. We think these compact campers encourage a back-to-the-basics camping approach that so many of us desire.

Can You Put a Bathroom in a 4000 lbs Travel Trailer?

You might be surprised to realize that almost all of the travel trailers under 4000 lbs that we’ve reviewed incorporate a bathroom. It’s true that smaller floorplans typically lend themselves to wet baths. However, finding a dry bath in even these small campers is not all that unusual.

Even if you fall in love with one of the few options on our list that are bathroom free , never fear. You can always opt to bring along a portable or composting toilet.

10 Things to Know About Owning a Small Travel Trailer

Things to Know About Owning a Small Travel Trailer

1. They’re Much Easier to Tow

Small travel trailers are easy to tow compared to other types of campers. Lightweight campers are less likely to bully a tow vehicle and push it all over the road. They are also easier to tow because a wider array of vehicles can pull them. You won’t need a huge pickup to tow a travel trailer under 4000 lbs GVWR, since many SUVs can tow this size camper.

The shorter length of small travel trailers also makes them easier to tow. You will not have to take turns as wide or find parking spaces as long as you would with a larger camper. Small travel trailers are great for those who may not have towed before.

2. Modern Layouts Make Small Campers Feel Spacious

A camper under 4000 lbs GVWR today looks very different from what a camper of the same weight would have looked like a few decades ago. Modern layouts and innovations in dual-purpose furniture and other spaces within the RV make even the smallest floorplan feel spacious.

Advancements in manufacturing and the incorporation of lighter-weight materials in the construction of today’s campers also mean that lightweight campers aren’t as small or as bare bones as they once were.

3. Storage Can Be Challenging

One thing that is hard to overcome in small travel trailers is a lack of storage. A compact floorplan inherently means less space. Moreover, dual-purpose furniture and spaces are even more prevalent in small travel trailers than in their larger counterparts.

These dual-purpose features are great because they allow RVers more luxuries in a smaller space. The disadvantage is that they tend to encroach on space that would otherwise be allocated to storage.

4. Many Small Campers Have Bathrooms AND Kitchens

travel 4000

Many small travel trailers today use modern innovation to incorporate both a bathroom and kitchen into their floorplan. Depending on the square footage, the kitchen might be in the form of an outside galley, or the bathroom might be a wet bath. Nevertheless, these small campers are more than just beds on wheels.

5. But Holding Tanks Will Be Small

Incorporating bathrooms and kitchens into compact campers come with the need for holding tanks. Water is very heavy. In fact, just ten gallons of water weigh over 80 lbs. Therefore, although you’ll find freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks on board lightweight campers, these tanks are typically small to keep GVWR low.

6. You Can Fit in Any Campground

You won’t have to worry too much about the capacity of your tanks if you plan to camp in modern campgrounds with full hookups. The good news is that these small campers fit in any campground and on almost any campsite. This means finding availability is much easier for compact campers than for larger rigs.

7. Boondocking Is Challenging but Not Impossible

Although you can camp just about anywhere with a tiny travel trailer, the smaller tank capacities do make boondock-style camping more of a challenge.

If you choose to take your under 4000 lbs GVWR travel trailer off the grid, you may want to invest in a water purification system. Boondocking can also be made easier in a small-tanked travel trailer by swapping out the traditional toilet for a composting toilet.

8. They’re More Affordable to Maintain

They're More Affordable to Maintain

Smaller campers are easier and more affordable to maintain than larger models. Lightweight campers have fewer or no slide-outs. Less moving parts means there are fewer things to break or wear out over time. Souped-up luxury travel trailers also commonly have more plumbing and more electrical to worry about than their smaller counterparts.

9. You Don’t Need a Heavy-Duty Truck

Compact travel trailers under 4000 lbs are also more affordable because they don’t require you to purchase a heavy-duty truck to pull them. Their low GVWR means that many SUVs can tow them with ease.

10. They’re Great for Beginning RVers

Small, lightweight travel trailers are great for beginning RVers. They are easier to tow and park than larger RVs and can often be towed behind a vehicle you own. Their compact size and fewer bells and whistles make them easier for a novice to maintain.

Moreover, their small size also comes with a typically smaller price tag, making them great when testing the waters on an RV lifestyle.

Is It Worth Buying a Travel Trailer Under 4000 lbs?

Is It Worth Buying a Travel Trailer Under 4000 lbs

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs are great options. Whether you’re a first-time RVer or an occasional camper, these lightweight rigs offer many of the benefits of larger trailers without nearly the investment.

You can often save money with a travel trailer under 4000 lbs by towing your lightweight travel trailer with a vehicle you own. Not only will you save on tow vehicle costs, but also fuel, maintenance, and storage costs are lower with a compact travel trailer.

By nature, these small campers can’t include all the luxuries in their larger counterparts. Full-time RVers or even dedicated weekend warriors might desire more amenities than a small travel trailer offers. Still, for many, a travel trailer under 4000 lbs will meet their needs and be well worth the investment.

If you’re considering traveling in an RV but aren’t sure where to begin, a travel trailer might be a good match for you!

However, the biggest unknown when it comes to travel trailers is knowing what you can and can’t tow. But chances are likely your vehicle can tow something, including certain travel trailers!

Are you looking for a light enough rig to hit the road with ? Then this list is for you! Let’s go over some of the best travel trailers under 4000 pounds, and some other extremely helpful information!

What Weight Can I Tow, Really?

If you’re concerned about towing your travel trailer, you should be aware of the many different weights that are worth knowing before you hit the road. They matter because an even distribution of weight is key to towing safely and securely. Plus, you never want to go beyond what your tow vehicle can handle!

Thankfully, these weights and numbers are fairly easy to understand, and manufacturers always include a starting weight of any travel trailer they make, so that you won’t be entirely in the dark about how much your trailer weighs. Even if you buy used, the weight of your rig should be readily available from the manufacturer or elsewhere. If you’re really in a pinch, you can even weigh your travel trailer at home .

Here are some of the terms you should know when it comes to the weight of your rig, and what it means for you when it comes to finally purchasing a lightweight travel trailer!

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

This is the maximum allowable weight of a fully-loaded trailer, including liquids, passengers, cargo, and the tongue weight of any towed vehicle (most travel trailers can’t tow an additional vehicle). This is the weight you will want to know before departing on your first camping trip with your new travel trailer! It is the most a trailer can weigh in total, as determined by the trailer manufacturer.

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)

GCWR is the maximum weight of your vehicle with a trailer attached, as determined by the vehicle manufacturer. This means the weight of both the tow vehicle and the trailer together. It also includes any cargo or load placed in either vehicle.

Dry Weight or Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW)

UVW means the weight of an RV as built at the factory, by the manufacturer. It does not include the weight of the cargo, fresh water, propane gas, occupants, etc. It is the weight of the trailer with nothing extra in it, and is the weight you should know when shopping for a new travel trailer!

Tongue Weight or Hitch Weight (HW)

Also known as tongue weight, HW is the amount of weight of the trailer that is carried on the hitch. You will need to know this weight when shopping for a proper hitch. Hitches are rated both by their towing capacity and their tongue weight. You can learn more about tongue weight capacity (and tricks for increasing it) in this article .

Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)

GAWR is the maximum allowable weight each axle assembly is designed to carry. This is important to know because it’s possible to be under the GVWR and still exceed an axle rating, depending on how you load the RV with your personal cargo.

This is a lot of information to digest, but once you get more familiar with travel trailers and what it all means, the various weights of your trailer will make a lot more sense! You will come to understand why it is necessary to know these weights and the importance of staying within certain ranges depending on your tow vehicle.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Travel Trailers?

So you’ve looked at the various weights necessary for towing a travel trailer. You know your weight limits for your tow vehicle, and you have to keep it under 4000 pounds. Great! There are lots of options out there for you.

But what else about travel trailers makes them a good choice over truck campers or Class B, C, or V RVs for you? And what might be the downsides?

Pro: Travel Trailers Can Be Left

The main perk of travel trailers in my book is their ability to be left at camp. If you’re on traveling to a new place, and seeing new sights, the last thing you want is to travel in an overly large motorhome or camper. The best part of a travel trailer is the ability to leave it behind! Once you unhitch your RV from your vehicle, you’re free as a bird!

Con: Towing Can Be Stressful

No matter what specific type of travel trailer you look at, you need to be prepared for one very important detail: your trailer must be towed. This might not be what you are hoping for, but there are a lot of positives to towable travel trailers versus motorhomes. However, towing takes a lot of practice and concentration, and RVs are notorious for not being the easiest to drive , so you may consider this a con.

Pro: Light Doesn’t Mean Compromising

Another perk of travel trailers is their lightweight design . Motorhomes and coaches guzzle diesel fuel or gasoline, a huge drawback if you are only planning a small budget for your upcoming trip.

Some travel trailers are so light that you can tow them with the smallest of cars, which means you won’t have to worry about renting or borrowing someone’s large truck to tow your new rig!

Con: Trailers Are Small

No matter what, a travel trailer may feel like fairly tight quarters . If your tow vehicle can only handle the smallest of rigs, you may not find a travel trailer large enough for your travel plans, especially if you’re traveling with a dog or other pet . No matter how long the trip, travel trailers never feel like they have enough space!

However, there’s always the great outdoors if you’re looking for some time and space to reflect, and the travel trailer will be there when you are feeling relaxed and ready to turn in for the night!

Types Of Travel Trailers

If the weight limits and pros and cons haven’t changed your mind, the fun research can begin. There are many different types of travel trailers out there! Heck, you can even find travel trailers with two bathrooms in some cases !

All travel trailers are towed behind a vehicle using classic ball hitches. But how else do they vary from one another? Let’s take a look!

Classic Travel Trailers

The most classic travel trailer you can get may be the right fit for you. And that’s because there are so many different fits! A classic travel trailer is towed behind your vehicle using a ball hitch and ranges in length from 10-35 feet. These classic trailers often have four tires total, and are the most traditional setup when it comes to the interior (bedroom, bathroom, living area, kitchen).

Slide-outs are also a popular feature on nearly all newer travel trailers, allowing more space on a lightweight frame. Given the range of length, weight, and specifications possible on classic travel trailers, it is recommended that you check out all of the necessary weight requirements before purchasing one. Some trailers require a heavy-duty truck for towing, despite their small size.

My vintage rig may only be 19 feet long but given its old metal frame, I need a V8 truck to tow it! A classic travel trailer may give you the space you want, but make sure your vehicle can tow it! You may also consider the durability of travel trailers; if you’re planning to offroad or venture anywhere remote and unpaved, some travel trailers may not be made for that sort of trek.

The classic travel trailers on this list will be under 4000 pounds, but not all of them are created equal. If you are planning to do your own research and shopping, don’t forget to check your weight limits first.

Toy Hauler Trailers

Looking for a home on wheels that will also transport all of your other recreational toys? A toy hauler does exactly what it says in the name, and might be a good choice for you if you have a lot of other fun vehicles! Toy haulers are towable rigs and some of the largest travel trailers out there.

They come with a fold-down ramp often at the back end of the trailer, perfect for wheeling out your ATVs, motorcycles, jet skis, and whatever else you can fit back there! These trailers are designed as a half garage, half living space, with various different layouts affecting the style. The sky’s the limit in terms of customizing your toy hauler but at the end of the day, you need a vehicle that can tow it!

Toy haulers are often the heaviest of travel trailers, as they are carrying even more vehicles inside of them! These are the peak of recreational vehicles, allowing you the maximum amount of entertainment possible, but just make sure you can handle the weight!

However, there are some toy haulers on the market that are under 4000 pounds. You may not be able to bring the whole family plus every single recreational item you own, but there are options out there.

Teardrop Trailers

Now that you’ve seen the biggest travel trailer options, let’s take a look at the smallest: teardrop trailers! These little guys are amazing for those of you hoping to tow with your small car, as most teardrops weigh less than 1,000 pounds to tow! What a great idea, making a camper so little! This also means it will be easy to store at your home. What’s the catch?

As I’m sure you might’ve guessed, these trailers are tiny. So much so that for the most part, teardrop trailers only have enough space for a mattress inside. A kitchen is often built off the back of the trailer, which means your cooking must be done outside . There are rarely ever bathrooms, which could be a deal breaker for some of you new campers out there.

However, teardrops are amazing little trailers and are so easy to tow! Their kitchens are often high-tech and amazing to have while camping, and I can’t think of a better trailer to bring along on short road trips or wonderful weather outings. These little teardrops are great for you adventurers out there looking to off-road it or travel more ruggedly, and they will almost always weigh less than 4000 pounds.

Pop-Up Travel Trailers

Unconcerned about the elements and looking for the best of both worlds when it comes to trailer towing? How about a pop-up travel trailer, which brings the best of towing, size, and budget to you?

Pop-up trailers are inconspicuous at first, residing inside a flat, easily towable frame. When you arrive at camp, the canvas sides can pop up to create your camper, much larger than teardrops and lighter weight than toy haulers or classic travel trailers. It is a perfect combo of RV and tent and is recommended primarily for camping where the weather is nice.

Some pop-ups even have more rigid sides to their tents in order to better your experience if camping in a colder climate. Given the extra interior space, some pop-ups include bathrooms and living spaces, and usually always have a kitchen. This may make pop-ups a good fit for you if you’re worried about the weight of your rig but don’t want to sacrifice space.

The Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds

While RVing gets more and more popular, the demand for lightweight rigs has skyrocketed. Here’s what you have all been waiting for the ultimate list of travel trailers under 4000 pounds!

Best Classic Travel Trailer: Sonic Lite by Venture RV

sonic light under 4000 pounds

Looking for a classic travel trailer with many floorplan options, all of which are under 4000 pounds? The Sonic Lite may be what you’re looking for. Venture RV’s single-axle travel trailer offers solid construction, with floorplans starting out at a fuel-saving 3,000 pounds!

Sonic Lite features the most interior storage in its class, which as a full-timer, I absolutely need! Interiors are surprisingly spacious – there’s ample storage and this rig boasts many features on a more compact scale. This travel trailer is engineered with a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof system. By arching the roof front to back, this system provides a more durable roof that shouldn’t need resealing . This means when it rains, the water runs off, making all of my water worries a thing of the past!

All of the floorplans vary in terms of their offerings, but almost all include a bedroom with overhead storage, a full-length shirt closet, and StorMore nightstands with 110V outlets and USB charging ports. Although I prefer to not look at my phone before bed, I need an alarm to get me up in the morning, so the charging ports and nightstands are super helpful.

Double bunk floorplans offer Teddy Bear bunk mattresses, and each bunk has its own window which is perfect for guests when they stay over! The bathrooms include a porcelain foot-flush toilet, tub or shower surround, and skylight to let all the heat and steamy air escape.

Sonic optimizes every possible opportunity to offer virtually unlimited storage, which is a huge perk with lightweight RVs . Exterior features include a power awning with LED lights, nitrogen-filled radial tires, and slam-latch baggage doors with magnetic catches. I could talk about this camper all day, but to round it up, there’s simply so much on offer with the Sonic Lite, you’ll just have to check them out for yourself here!

Best Teardrop Trailer: iCamp Elite

icamp elite travel trailer

Any teardrop trailer should be under 4000 pounds, which means options are close to endless. However, the iCamp Elite is one of the few teardrops out there with both a shower and a toilet ! Not to mention an interior kitchen! These luxuries may seem silly to mention, but finding the perfect teardrop can be tricky, but I think the iCamp might the process a bit easier.

The iCamp Elite is a fully laminated travel trailer. The body is reinforced with aluminum tubing frames, and a high gloss fiberglass skin is laminated over structural Styrofoam made by the Dow Chemical Company. I love that the interior walls are covered with wallpaper for luxury and easy care, whilst underneath is a strong structure I know will support me on all the adventures yet to come in the future!

The furniture is a sandwich structure made with solid wood and high-grade plywood, before being finished with semi-gloss PU paint for style and durability. The furniture is curved and although I think it looks great, it’s also functional, as it makes for the best use of the space. This teardrop is equipped with the most classic travel trailer amenities and best of all, it’s fitted with a spacey one-piece modular bathroom with shower and toilet.

This may not be the first rig you think of when someone says teardrop travel trailer (don’t worry, there are a couple of other more traditional looks on this list!), but it’s an option I simply couldn’t skip. Best of all, I can tow it with ease because it weighs less than 2000 pounds! You can learn more about this compact travel trailer here .

Best Pop-Up Travel Trailer: Clipper Camping Trailer 107LS by Coachmen

clipper coachman light travel trailer

There’s nothing I enjoy more than getting out and exploring, and with an easy setup, this Coachmen is well worth considering! This is a tow and store trailer, which folds down to create such a compact rig for storage! Coachmen have been a big player in the RV game for some time, and their reliability stretches from their more traditional trailers into their exclusive pop-ups!

There are options such as two queen beds, a kitchen, and many additional features- did I mention all of this for under 2000 pounds? It’s all part of the Clipper Camping Trailer ! I enjoy relaxing outside, so the awning offers ideal protection from the elements, and when the weather gets a bit too gnarly, I can get cozy inside as the 70″ gauchos will provide plenty of comforts.

I’m able to cook meals from scratch using the two-burner range, and washing up is a breeze with the deep bowl acrylic sink. The residential laminated countertop offers space to place all the ingredients I can think of!  There’s also an optional Off-Road package, offering 15″ off-road tires and a spare, plus length stabilizing extended jacks and more to explore even further each trip!

Each Clipper is built on an E-coated tubular steel frame, with cable supported structured platform bed system, the J-track metal door hook system, and Velcro attached valances, so I can trust this rig is built to last. Plus removable curtains and cushions provide a comfortable and flexible RV experience.

Without a proper bathroom, this may not be the best choice for you, but pop-ups pack a lot of features into a lightweight frame! It may be possible to hook up a portable shower outside, and a cassette toilet inside to improve practicality, so don’t wipe this trailer off your list just yet! Plus the option to store a pop-up trailer in your garage or elsewhere is an awesome perk, and you can check out the rest of the Clipper Camping Trailer by clicking here.

Best On A Budget: Micro Minnie 1708FB by Winnebago

micro mini

A mainstay and a family name, Winnebago has been regarded as one of the best in the RV business for quite some time. They aren’t reinventing the travel trailer wheel, but the Micro Minnie 1708FB is a comfortable and lightweight classic, all with an affordable price tag!

If the smallest Micro Minnie floor plan doesn’t fit the bill, there are ten others to choose from, ranging in size from 19 feet to 25 feet. No matter what, these trailers remain lightweight, easy to tow, and comfortable inside! Winnebago has thought about where to place windows for the best cross breezes, as well as keeping the kitchen and living area open which I especially love as nothing is worse than a cramped, stuffy RV!

As I’ve said before, I love spending as much time outside in nature as possible, so therefore, the patio speakers, motorized awning, and LED lighting are big draws for me! There’s even seemingly endless exterior storage to make packing up a breeze and provides space to keep extra blankets for when evening temperatures drop. The Micro Minnie’s dry weight is just over 3,000 pounds, making it lightweight but probably still necessary to own a larger towing vehicle.

The price on this trailer can’t be beat and it’s definitely the most budget-friendly on this list. If you’re hoping to start your travel trailer journey with tradition and budget in mind, the Micro Minnie is perfect for you and your lightweight trailer goals! It also made our list of the best travel trailers for solo travel, and you can check out all of the features of the Micro Minnie by clicking here .

Best Toy Hauler: Sportsmen Classic 130RB

2023 KZ RV Sportsmen Classic 180TH Ultra Lightweight Travel Trailer Toy Hauler

The construction of this Sportsmen Classic is impressive and gives me the peace of mind I need when traveling around the country! They even offer a lifetime warranty on the Dicor Tufflex PVC roof membrane which is something I haven’t come across with many travel trailers at all!

There isn’t simply one Sportsmen to fit every RVer, and that’s why there are several options and add-ons available. I’m particularly drawn to the Off-Road Package which features aluminum rims, mud tires, additional ground clearance, a double entry step, and an electronically controlled heated holding tank so I won’t have to worry about water freezing come winter.

Best Fiberglass Trailer: Escape 19 by Escape Trailers

escape travel trailer

Given that I’m currently full-time in a 19-foot vintage rig, I love to keep an eye on comparable models I might want to upgrade to in the future. The Escape 19-foot model has every amenity you (and I) might be looking for in a lightweight and waterproof fiberglass shell, just under 4000 pounds dry!

The Escape 19 includes lots of room for storage and the ability to sleep 5 with an optional cot, all while being able to be towed by an SUV or small truck. This compact and efficient trailer is a best seller and one of the most regularly personalized trailers at Escape. The solid one-piece fiberglass shell is strong, durable, easy to clean, and completely waterproof, meaning I won’t be facing structural issues in the future, allowing the resale value to remain high!

This slightly longer model includes a wet bath, an optional raised frame, and loads of standard features to make for a comfortable RV vacation. Its non-standard features are also impressive, including solar, additional storage hatches, and interior outlets, making boondocking and going off-grid possible! Every Escape is made to order from the manufacturer which is a unique situation if finding a used model is difficult, as a new one can be made exactly how you like it!

Escape trailers also allow for customization of the flooring, countertop, and fabric choices; there is a small additional fee for bringing them your own materials but it is rare to have the option to customize to your heart’s content! I’m saving up for an Escape, and if you’re interested you may want to put a deposit down for their lengthy waiting list now

Best Off-Road Trailer: The Classic Teardrop Trailer by Timberleaf

classic travel trailer

The name itself can’t be beaten when it comes to teardrop trailers, and Timberleaf knows modern teardrops like no other. Their Classic model is everything I know I’d want when it comes to a teardrop trailer, with even more customizable options than I thought possible in such a small space!

Coming in at 1,500 pounds dry, this little guy can be towed by almost any standard vehicle. The main perk of ordering a Timberleaf trailer, however, is their attention to the suspension. The Classic Teardrop can come in 3 different suspensions, varying depending on the expected level of adventure. There’s even a totally off-road option for those expecting to be off the beaten path!

There’s no bathroom with this teardrop, but there is an amazing kitchen off the back. Not having a bathroom might be a dealbreaker, but there’s always the option of bringing a cassette toilet along. If I owned this little rig, I’d probably fit a small cassette toilet or stay at a campground for a few days to use the facilities.

As an avid cook, I’m really impressed with the kitchen on this rig. It’s fully customizable, the galley is a stunner, and I sacrifice nothing in terms of comfort (except of course a dishwasher!). The interior itself is clean and fits a queen bed so I know a good night’s sleep is pretty much guaranteed! It includes tons of storage too so I don’t have to worry about bringing too much.

The best part of the Classic Teardrop for me has got to be its large skylight over the bed. Bringing the outdoors in, this skylight is the biggest offered in the teardrop industry, and I couldn’t even imagine how beautiful the night sky looks through it. It may be small, but this trailer makes a huge impact!

Most Unique: The Cricket by Taxa Outdoors

cricket under 4000 pounds

I have to start off by saying that this is not your mother’s trailer. In fact, this little guy is the most unique trailer on this list! The Cricket pop-up travel trailer by Taxa Outdoors is made for adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, and designers. How can it please all of these types of people? Through one-of-a-kind building and design.

First off, this little guy is tiny: it’s only 15 feet long, less than 7 feet across, and weighs 1,700 pounds dry. While there are countless non-standard features, the Cricket comes built out with a full bed, kitchen, and loads of storage for such a small space. It also has an included cafe table, a standard entry door, and a back hatch that opens, allowing even more of the outside in.

The roof pops up, as is the way of pop-up travel trailers, providing an extra 3 feet of headroom and windows! I don’t like feeling cramped in an RV, but as I’m tall, this happens quite often! I like that I can easily stand up in the Cricket and won’t feel claustrophobic at all. These little guys can also come with a portable toilet, outdoor shower, and awnings to fully enclose your outdoor needs. There are also additional roof racks for storage, but these don’t come standard. This is frustrating but may be worth it to bring lots of additional equipment and gear camping!

What else can be said about the Cricket, besides its eye-catching good looks? It may be at the higher end of the budget and be a bit too unique for the average camper, but if you are up for the challenge, this little pop-up might be exactly what you’ve been searching for! It also made the list of our best travel trailers for couples if you’re looking to hit the road with your partner !

Best With A Bathroom: r-pod RP-180 by Forest River

r-pod Exterior Image

As an Oregon state camp host, I see these little r-pod trailers everywhere. Ranging in size from 17 feet to 20 feet, r-pod trailers are all the rage right now. I can’t help but wonder why, and now I know. Forest River has been in the business for a long time, and they know what RVers are looking for, especially when it comes to lightweight camping!

The r-pod RP-180 is the smallest trailer of this model that still comes with a bathroom. I had no idea how lightweight they could be, coming in at under 3,000 pounds dry! 18 feet shouldn’t be too difficult to control on the road , and I’m comforted knowing I have every amenity I need at a weight I can tow. However, there are around 11 different floor plans to choose from, most all very lightweight and easy to tow, but make sure to confirm your weight limits before falling in love.

With a powder-coated steel frame that resists corrosion, this trailer requires little to no maintenance, although I’d definitely still winterize when the cold season is near! It can also be designed and ordered with many upgrades such as an entertainment system, solar panels, and even a screened-in awning so I can choose the amenities I need most.

With an awning, one easy-to-operate slide, and boasting tons of interior and exterior storage, I feel comfortable camping anywhere, anytime in this trailer. Even if I’m simply camping for the weekend, this r-pod has everything I need to get cozy and enjoy the great outdoors, all on an affordable luxury budget!

Best Double/Dual Axel: Palomino SolAire Ultra Lite 147H

SolAire Ultra Lite Exterior Image

Weighing in at just 3,408 pounds, the Palomino SolAire Ultra Lite 147H is a dual-axel travel trailer that really manages to pack a punch! Although it’s lightweight and measures a modest 19â€Č 1″ in length, the SolAire 147H includes luxury features such as a power awning with LED lights, Furrion entertainment system, 13,500 BTU air conditioning, stainless steel fixtures, and more!

Sometimes, it’s the little things manufacturers bring to the table that make all the difference for me. Living full-time in a travel trailer, I need a functional space that doesn’t compromise on aesthetics, and that’s what has been achieved with this Palomino SolAire. The dual axel provides enhanced durability and capability, whilst the power tongue jack brings security once I’ve made it to my destination.

The exterior of this trailer is actually pretty modern, with a white hi-gloss finish, keeping things sleek and clean which is something I want from an RV. If you’re new to RVing, you may not know exactly what you need from a rig, and Palomino has made this easy as there are simply countless optional extras with this rig including a countertop extension, theatre seating, AC in the bedroom, an even a washer/dryer. However, all of these options are floorplan dependant, so they may not work in the 147H so it’s worth double-checking!

I love that this trailer has a full bathroom! As you’ve already seen from our list so far, not all lightweight trailers are equipped with a bathroom, but this SolAire has a full shower, sink, and toilet for ultimate convenience! As I love to cook up a feast for friends and family in my rig, I would prefer the kitchen to be a bit bigger with more countertop space, but this isn’t really too big of a problem as the dinette table could act as additional prep space if needed, and I can always grill outside too!

Best 4-Season Trailer: Opus Camper OP LITE

travel 4000

I first heard about Opus Campers a couple of years ago, and I still think they are some of the most innovative, creative travel trailers on the market today! There are a few different Opus models available, but I want to talk about the Opus Camper OP LITE as it’s ideal for camping year-round. I know what you’re thinking
this trailer looks more like a tent! Well, hear me out because this is one ingenious piece of kit able to transform vacations on the road.

For starters, this trailer weighs just 3,527 pounds and still manages to fit a full kitchen, fridge, slide-out storage, queen-size bed, and a sizeable lounge space. The AIR OPUS system inflates this rig in under 2 minutes. One of the things that frustrated me with trailer life sometimes is the length of time I spend getting my rig into position and set up ready to use, so this is a big bonus in my eyes! You can see a full walkthrough and setup shown in the video below:

The ability to get the OP LITE set up in a couple of minutes is ideal in winter when it might be raining, windy, or snowing. It’s easy to inflate the trailer with just the press of a button as the inflation technology is powered by the 12v compressor that’s pre-installed in the OP LITE. As I spend all of my time traveling on the road, I need a trailer able to handle the harshness of both summer and winter.

Therefore, I think the addition of the inflatable AIR Annex is well worth it! The annex fits securely to the trailer tent and offers a substantial shaded space that’s protected from the sun and rain too! The kitchen in the OP LITE is an exterior one in the form of a slide-out which I’m actually quite fond of, as it means there’s less going on in the main living area, keeping it light, open, and spacious.

The biggest standout feature for me with this trailer, however, is how off-road-ready it is. I love camping in the heart of nature and spending as much time in the wilderness as possible, but unfortunately, winter weather often makes tracks muddy and difficult to drive on – especially when towing a travel trailer! But these harsh weather conditions aren’t an issue with the OP LITE.

The trailer has a robust suspension system, galvanized steel chassis, articulating hitch, twin shock absorbers, trailing arm suspension, and a 360-degree hitch rotation for sharp corners. All of these incredible features come with a pretty high price tag, but the OP LITE truly is one of a kind.

You can check out more details about the OP LITE here.

Best Trailer With Slide-Out: 2023 Jayco Jay Feather Micro 166FBS

Jay Feather Micro

Lightweight travel trailers can often be on the smaller side, and this is great for solo travel or weekend adventures, but what about couples or small families? Well, the 2023 Jay Feather Micro 166FBS is a small trailer with an exterior length of 19â€Č 8″ and a height of 10â€Č 6″ with the additional air conditioner. What makes this trailer unique, however, is the single slide where storage and a sofa space are created.

Slides on an RV are fantastic space enhancers, and the slide on this Jay Feather Micro trailer allows for ample floor space, making the rig feel light and airy. Although this trailer is lightweight, it does creep slightly over 4,000 lbs, with a UVW of 4,025, but I wanted to add it to our list as it has so much to offer for such little weight!

As you’ve already seen from many of the other trailers on this list, small sometimes means compromise, but not with this Jayco! It has a spacious kitchen fitted with attractive cabinetry, a microwave, fridge, pantry, sink, and worktop space so I can cook to my heart’s content! I like that Jayco has also prioritized external features with this trailer by including an exterior fridge and a sizeable 11â€Č awning for entertaining guests no matter the weather.

The bathroom space is also impressive, with a full shower, toilet, and sink in the corner of the trailer. Having a bathroom may not be the be-all and end-all for every RVer, but a bathroom is something I don’t want to sacrifice on the road. I love the range of interior finish options as it means each RVer can customize certain areas to exactly how they want.

This travel trailer does creep slightly over 4,000 lbs, but it’s a fantastic option with a slide-out and everything I could possibly imagine an RVer would need on the road!

You can explore more from Jayco and the Jay Feather Micro 166FBS by clicking here .

Towing a lightweight travel trailer is easier now than it has ever been before. No matter your specific amenity needs or wants, there’s a model and design out there for you. And all for under 4000 pounds! Just be sure your tow vehicle has the capacity to tow the travel trailer you choose and you should be good to go for any and all adventures!

Important Camper Weight Terms

When scouting for a travel trailer, there are some terms you may come across which may be confusing. Understanding these weight terms will make your search easier and less confusing.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) : This is the maximum weight of the vehicle or trailer when fully loaded for travel. This includes the unloaded vehicle weight, extra equipment or accessories, cargo, passengers, and liquids. The trailer and tow vehicle each have their own GVWR.

Unloaded Vehicle Weight:  This is the dry weight of the camper with no gear, no fluids, and no additional items. This is the exact structure weight before it’s prepped to hit the road.

Dry Weight: Dry Weight is like Curb Weight, except all of the camper’s consumables such as washer fluid, oil, fuel, coolant, etc. are not added to the calculation.

Cargo Carrying Capacity:  This is the highest amount of weight your cargo and gear should amount to. You can weigh your items separately before loading, to carefully keep track of your cargo’s weight.

Gross Combined Weight Rating: The GCWR is the total weight of absolutely everything. When you total the vehicle, everything inside the vehicle, the towing apparatus, the gears, and the trailer, it should be less than this number.

The floor plan selected here is the 14CR which has a GVWR of 3,803 lbs.

Being small and lightweight is not an indication that it is short on features. It too has many features like the Viking above just in a slightly smaller package. Since it has the same features as the Viking above I’m not going to repeat them, but suffice it to say both are very capable lightweights.

Clipper Cadet 14CR Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,803 lbs
  • UVW – 2,335 lbs

Venture RV Sonic Lite

Venture RV is not a name I am personally familiar with, however, my research on lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds indicates they make a very well designed camper. Venture’s parent company is K.Z inc which happens to be a subsidiary of Thor Industries. K-Z got started with truck campers back in 1972 so there is lots of experience in this company.

On the construction side of things, the Sonic Lite has several features worth noting. For example, the roof is a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof. It extends from the profile to the rear bumper. The insulation R-value is 14 which makes for a very comfortable environment in most everyday scenarios. The roof rafters are made is aluminum and there is a diamond plate protecting the aerodynamic front profile.

Like the Coachmen above this camper also has an NXG frame . you get a standard manual awning but can upgrade to a powered awning with LED lights.

The sidewalls are 5-sided ivory infused fiberglass. Not sure what makes the ivory infused so special but apparently it’s important enough to Venture RV to mention it.

On the inside, you will find a host of features such as a spacious 60″ x 75″ bed that has USB chargers, as well as storage on the headboard. You also have overhead storage and the bed platform is on hinges allowing you to store more stuff underneath the bed.

The kitchen area features a dual-burner cook-top with a range hood. You also get a full-size convection oven which is pretty nice to have. There is also a pantry for even more food storage.

The bathroom is well laid out and has plenty of space and there is a skylight above the shower.

Added bonus features include backup camera prep, marine-grade detachable power cord, cable, TV and solar prep, and the LevelMate Pro system (optional). The LevelMate Pro calculates and displays the height required to achieve a perfectly level position. There is a lot more than you can view on their website.

Venture RV Sonic Lite Specifications:

The Venture Sonic Lite comes in 7-floor plans so you are bound to find one that meets your needs. It has many of the same features as its bigger brother the Sonic but in a more compact package. The GVWR ranges from 3,500 lbs to 4,000 lbs making this ultralight travel trailer super easy to tow.

  • GVWR – 3,500 – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,210 – 2,940 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 38 gallons
  • Gray Water: 30 gallons

Winnebago Minnie Drop (1710)

A unique design, excellent use of interior space make the Winnebago Minnie Drop one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. You can read our review of the Minnie Drop right here.

With 4 floor plans that all have a GVWR of fewer than 4,000 lbs you are sure to find a layout that works for you and can be easily towed.

Like all Winnebago’s the Minnie Drop comes standard with lots of features. The exterior design has a nice collection of colors to please just about any RV enthusiast. The construction consists of an NGX engineered frame, aluminum floor structure, and plywood decking.

Night-shades, custom bedspread, carbon monoxide, and LP detector, as well as a 2-burner stove are included in their list of standard features.

Winnebago Minnie Drop Specification:

  • GVWR – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,760 – 3,160 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 31 gallons

Airstream Basecamp

Airstream’s entry weighing in at 3,500 lbs GVWR is the Basecamp. The Basecamp is small but it is very well-design like all the other Airstream travel trailers. It is not by any means inexpensive starting at $37,400 but it does, for some, warrant the price

A panoramic front window makes the Basecamp a cool looking travel trailer that is also extremely functional for its small size of 16-feet in length. In 2017 the Airstream Basecamp was voted RV of the year by RV Business Magazine.

There is only one-floor plan available but it is a well-laid out design that is both economical in space but very functional.

The exterior of the Basecamp is a riveted aluminum structure with a very aerodynamic shape. Tammy and I both love the panoramic window and the shape increases fuel efficiency. It also sports a rear hatch door which is usually not found on campers.

There is both an air-conditioning unit and a heating system available that are both optional. The interior decor comes in three options Red Rock, River rock, and Glacier Lake.

Two benches can easily be made into a bed, the rear hatch lets you load up your bike easily. In the kitchen, you have a two-burner stove, a sink with a tempered glass cover, a microwave, and a fridge as well. There are also two removable tables and bench storage.

A pop-up charging station in the kitchen area has two USB ports and a 110-volt outlet. On the exterior, you get a solar pre-wire kit and an outdoor shower. The outdoor shower is really a pass-through from the bathroom.

Airstream Basecamp Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,500 lbs
  • UVW – 2,585 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 22 gallons
  • Gray Water and Black Water (Combo Tank): 29 gallons

Happier Camper

If you have never looked at a Happier Camper we suggest you do. When it comes to a unique design that is both lightweight and functional we don’t think you will find one better in this weight range. The Adaptiv modular cubes allow you to design the interior of the Happier Camper just about any way you want.

The retro styling and colors make the Happier Camper stand out from the crowd. Check out the Happier Camper here .

The Happier Camper is not your typical travel trailer. As a matter of fact, I’ve not seen any other camper designed like this one. It has a retro look with very modern features. The interior comes with what they refer to as an Adaptiv modular design.

It allows you to easily and quickly configure the interior pretty much on the fly. For example, the sleeping arrangement can be configured to up to five people. Storage and counter-top option can also be arranged any way you like with the modular component cubes. An added bonus of the cubes is that some of them can double outdoor furniture.

This modular configuration is achievable due to the honeycomb fiberglass modular floor design. IT lets you insert cubes into the floor just like Lego. Pretty cool engineering.

Some of the components available include, cooler icebox, kitchenette with sink, patio table, serving bar, toilet cube and many more.

Happier Camper Specifications:

  • UVW – 1,100 lbs
  • Fresh Water: N/A
  • Gray Water: N/A
  • Black Water: N/A

Can you tell we like Lance? Here we are again with another Lanlightweightght travel trailer. This time it’s the Lance 1475 . This is the smallest travel trailer in the Lance line-up.

Even at this small size, it has a separate shower and toilet which is something we always look for in a small travel trailer. We are not big fans of the wet bath (shower and toilet in one).

It is quickly becoming one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. Lance has added more flexibility to the floor plan with an optional sofa bed slide out feature. The construction of the Lance 1475 is aluminum-framed sidewalls, floor, and ceiling. The interior panel walls are made from Azdel , and block foam insulation.

The floor and ceiling are laminated and insulated and the roof is a one-piece crowned PVC roof. More standard features on the outside include aluminum wheel and Goodyear radial tires, double-entry step with LED step lighting, exterior wash station, LCD mount bracket, manual tongue, and manual stabilizer bars , skylight, and roof vent in the bedroom and living room area.

The interior is well-appointed too with Euro overhead cabinetry, forced air 14,300 BTU furnace, 5-cubic feet refrigerator, stainless steel 3-burner range with cover, and back-splash. Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7 (154BH)

The Jayflight SLX 7 offers plenty of room in a small travel trailer. Due to its lightweight, it is very easy to tow. This model is the bunkhouse model that sleeps 3-4 people comfortably. Not one of my favorite models but it is lightweight and affordable. The floor plan is well laid out and does have a separate toilet and shower.

This camper offers a Magnum Truss Roof System, Goodyear Tires with galvanized steel, impact-resistant wheel wells. The construction of the Jay Flight seems to be better than most of its competitors in a similar price range. For example, Jayco offers custom-manufactured frames that offer higher strength and durability according to the company.

The Magnum Roof Truss System uses screws rather than staples, they use oversize nail plates, 2 x 2 vertical wood studs, 7″ header beams. According to Jayco, their roof system can withstand 4,500 pounds which are 50% heavier than their competition. The frame is a fully-integrated A-frame, on a 3-inch cambered, steel box tube frame.

There is quite a bit of standard equipment including but not limited to, maple cabinets, pantry storage, acrylic sink, 2-burner stove, 3-cubic feet refrigerator, microwave oven, fancy-looking brushed nickel faucets, and 8,000 BTU A/C wall-mounted, high-quality vinyl flooring, premium sound system and much more.

Jayco Jayflight 154BH Specification:

  • GVWR – 3,250 lbs
  • UVW – 2,580 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 10 gallons

Livin’ Lite Camplite (CL11FK)

Livin’ Lite makes another lightweight travel trailer that made our list. This one has a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. This floor plan is nice and offers many of the creature comforts found in the other models.

Livin’ Lite is no longer in business. You can access the owner’s forum which is still active.

Like many Livin Lite campers, this one offers a collection of very nice features. Included as standard equipment is dual-pane Euro windows, 3 interior color choices, including an all-aluminum cabinet door option. You also get solid-surface counter-tops, audio-visual package, interior speakers that are flush-mounted, a charging center with USB ports, and high-efficiency LED lights.

  • UVW – 2,430 lbs

K-Z RV Escape Mini

K-Z RV Escape Mini is another travel trailer with a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. The Escape Mini is affordable and lightweight but not light on style. One of the things I like about this ultralight travel trailer is its got a queen-size bed and a power awning. The Escape Mini comes in 4 different floor plans.

Additional standard features include storage above the bed which is always good to have. In the kitchen, you will find a two-burner stove, a convection microwave, seamless countertops, and a 4 cubic foot refrigerator.

Commonly Used Acronyms and Definitions for Campers

The acronyms below are commonly used in the RV industry when referring to the weight of a particular camper.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or GVWR?

Gross Vehicle Weight or (GVWR) as it is commonly abbreviated is, the maximum allowed the weight of the travel trailer and all of its content. It included the weight of the travel trailer, all fluids, cargo, optional equipment, and any accessories as well.

If you would like to calculate GVWR here is an easy to use trailer GVWR calculator.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)

The typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

The amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment, and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the freshwater tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity.

Tip For Buying Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds

When you are ready to buy or even just looking at lightweight travel trailers under 4000 pounds, there are a few things you can do to help you make a better purchase decision. Here are some tips.

  • Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum weight of the vehicle and travel trailer combined.
  • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight the rear axle can support.
  • Talk to other owners of the model or models you might be interested in. Ask questions, ask to see the inside if possible. Ask them about their towing experience with the camper. Does it sway? Is it steady on the road?
  • At the dealership go inside the model, open cabinets, feel the materials, look for flaws, etc. Be very critical as this is not a cheap purchase.
  • Ask the dealership if you can talk to past customers, ask questions about service, warranty, etc.

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds (Light Towable Trailers)

travel 4000

If you’re in the market for a new travel trailer and know just how much your vehicle can tow you want to be sure you choose the right trailer. These trailers all have a dry weight of less than 4000 lbs .

We put together this list because its quite common for future RV owners to look for a trailer under this weight. However before we get to the list of trailers lets go over what you should be looking for in a trailer that weighs less than 4000 pounds.

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

Not all cars can pull just any travel trailer, but if you have an SUV or a pickup, there are some fantastic models you can purchase for your next getaway. Are you going alone, with your partner or family?

The number of people a trailer sleeps is equally important given that you want to sleep in comfort if you’re to be able to get up to other activities during the day.

Kids are quite fond of trailers with bunk beds, so if you have little ones, be sure to look out for that. You will find that the bunk beds are often in a corner to give the children some privacy and a ‘cave’ feel.

How much storage space you need

Storage is another aspect to keep in mind when searching for the perfect home away from home for you and your family.

You don’t want to be limited in what you can bring with you to make your experience special. The duration of the trip matters- how much food, clothing, utensils and other gear will be required for the journey?

The modern-day trailer maximize on space by having overhead cabinets and drawers in the kitchen area. A good design has storage space under the bed, by a door or under the dinette- companies have found some creative ways to make the most out of the space.

Master bedroom

Though the trailer is an open plant, the size of bed can make the difference between feeling at home of feeling as though you’re camping. A queen size bed (or king size, though those are rare) for a good night’s sleep in comfort helps you feel rejuvenated after a long drive or a day outdoors exploring.

Most designs have LED lighting above the bed screwed into overhead cabinets to let you do some light reading before dozing off. Some trailers come with a closet and a bedside table on each side for added luxury.

The kitchen and dining area

Standard travel trailers come with a refrigerator, a cooktop with a kitchen hood, a microwave oven and dinette that converts into a sleeping area. Standard trailers come with a two-burner cooktop.

There are some great layouts that factor in a sink cover to give you full use of a counter top when making preparations for a meal. Though not quite common, a freezer is a great addition to have if you’re taking frozen foods or even ice cream with you.

These spaces are often quite small, but considering the time you spend in them, they are a fair compromise. A standard trailer will feature a foot-flush toilet and a shower.

Larger trailers will have a mirrored medicine cabinet and a sink with storage space underneath.

If your in the market for something smaller but still want the basic necessities such as a bathroom I would recommend reading this post here.

Water storage capacity

Don’t want to worry about water and waste during the trip? See what works for you, keeping in mind that a person can use up to 1.5 gallons for a 12-minute shower from a low flow shower-head. All trailers on this list, with two ore three exceptions, have a three water talks; a fresh, black and grey water talk. The grey tank contains the water that get used in the trailer- whether cooking, washing dishes or showering, while the black tank only holds what gets flushed down the toilet.

The galvanized steel roof will not leave you concerned about mildew or mold that is typical of wood or aluminum roofing. The double welded aluminum joists used for the entire flooring make for a stable floor that retains that solid feel after years of use.

To maintain an overall lightweight to structure as the whole, aluminum is used to frame the front and rear cap, the slide boxes, and the outside storage. The Safari Condo Alto F2114 is lightweight and can be easily towed by small SUVs. The frame and floor are made of aluminum.

The Alto is also a green travel trailer- most parts of it are recyclable, and the lightness of weight means that the car uses less gas to tow it around. The furniture mainly consists of aluminum as well as composite materials.

This series provides trailers with a more spacious interior and more storage space than the previous F17 series by Safari Condo. It, however, maintains the large windows and the durable material the brand used for their travel trailers.

The water and propane tanks are also more enormous, as is the fridge.

5 Bunkhouse Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs – Review

Photo of author

Bunkhouses travel trailers are quite cost-effective and provide extra sleeping space. A bunk room in a travel trailer may give versatility in addition to sleeping space. Families (and large families) should choose bunk bed campers. It is quite convenient to accommodate all family members and visitors without having to put mattresses, couches, dinettes, etc. together and take them apart. So that the spaces may continue to be used during the day, you can unwind on the bunk beds whenever you choose. Additionally, bunk beds for RVs are the most convenient and comfy beds available. In this article, I prepare a review with 5 Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 4000 LBS currently on the market, including photos, floorplans, videos, and 360 tours.

Table of Contents

Why Choose Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Bunk beds save space in floor plans, giving you more room to walk about. Some bunkhouses contain beds in a loft, which maximizes vertical space and gives you extra storage space. Travel trailers are often smaller, lighter, and less expensive than fifth wheels and toy haulers.

Smaller travel trailers are ideal for first-time RV owners since they are easier to pull. Don’t be fooled by classifications, though; travel trailers are more than simply basic RVs . Travel trailers with bunkhouses are also available in mid-range and premium versions, with a choice of appealing features.

Bunk Beds in Small Bunkhouse Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

I venture to claim that all modern RV manufacturers provide cozy bunk beds, even double sizes, with storage and USB ports. When you’re on the bunk bed, you may charge your phone or simply relax in a pleasant setting . Final Thoughts Regarding Weights

Many times, you will see websites that publish RV weights without mentioning the type of weight or simply referring to dry weight (UVW). However, remember that when towing a camper with your truck, you must consider all weights and loads, including people. So, the Gross Weight(GVWR) is, in my experience, the only weight that matters when you are trying to understand if you can or not pull the RV. I don’t usually give much importance to dry weight, because I am looking to have my RV fully loaded.

So, the gross weight, from my point of view, is an important weight that I will consider to know if I will be able to tow the travel trailer or not. This Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) is the sum of the Dry Weight (also known as the UVW or shipped weight) and the Load Capacity weight of the camper and is called the gross weight, total weight, also known by its acronym “GVWR” weight.

Always consult the owner’s manuals of vehicles and accessories before choosing to purchase and tow an RV. Also, be fully aware of the towing capacity of your vehicle according to the configuration you are using. Towing capacity will vary depending on the load, vehicle configuration, the number of passengers, and accessories. For your safety and the safety of others on the road, check towing capacities before you hit the road and consult with professional help if necessary.

Anyone with a limited budget can embrace the recreational vehicle (RV) lifestyle by purchasing lightweight travel trailers, which would prevent them from spending on costly pickup trucks and storage spaces.

Let’s be honest, not all of us have the resources to afford a vacation coach that we solely use for leisure purpose, and we need something that can serve multi-tasking. It is always better to buy a travel trailer, which can be attached to any car or SUV – which can haul it off to different sites. Unlike pickup traditional pickup trucks, modern vehicles are also equipped with robust crash protection features – which can instantly increase the safety aspects of your entire trip with family or friends. So, now whenever you feel stressed or fatigued from the mundane routine of the city life, you can just embark on an adventure in your personal travel trailer.

How to Select The Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs.?

You can unleash the adventurous side of yours by venturing out in the wild in your travel trailer. Sometimes our body and soul desperately yearns to be surrounded by majestic mountains and crystal-clear flowing rivers – which can instantly have a rejuvenating effect on our mind and we would feel refreshed from all the sorrows and troubles of everyday life.

Before you are ready to leave for your next getaway, you need to look for specific features and functions in the travel trailer you are going to buy. You need to assess your space requirement, so that you don’t feel cramped up with little space to move in a mini-sized camper. Apart from accommodating all your family members and friends, it should also have enough room to include basic amenities and utilities, so that you can experience a home-like feeling when you are on the road for several weeks in a row.

Below you can find the best travel trailers in the market under 4000 pounds.

1. Palomino PaloMini 177ORVBH Travel Trailer

2. Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1800RB

travel 4000

With new fuel efficient crossovers, this camper would definitely level up your travel game when you set out to explore the world on your own. The queen Murphy bed installed in this camper makes it highly effective at accommodating a large number of people during daytime. The double welded aluminum protection of the entire box provides additional stability to the structure and it can absorb a high level of vibrations given off from the ground when the vehicle is under high velocity. Unlike traditional roofing material that can quickly get swollen up after being in a humid environment, its galvanized steel roof gives it a leverage to sustain its structure in areas that are exposed to a high degree of humidity throughout the year.

When traditional RVs were made from heavy construction materials, such as wood or iron, the drivers used to feel the drag when the vehicle is under motion. Luckily, this camper has been mostly made from aluminum material, which gives its shocking lightweight. The LED puck lights used for the cabinetry of the travel trailer gives it a great ambiance and a luxe outlook.

3. Keystone Summerland Mini

travel 4000

In terms of storage, this is a highly accommodating camper, as it has a large-sized bed, and contains  a built-in closet so that keep all your wardrobe in a designated area. Towards the rear side of the trailer, you would also find two bunk beds, which are suitable for families with children. The cabinetry of the kitchen is also installed in a way that it leaves maximum room for an individual to perform the cooking chores rather than feeling cramped up in the limited space.

It also has a regular residential air-conditioning unit that can be easily turned on and off with the help of a plug. This way you don’t have to worry about any fuse to blow up, which can potentially be triggered by a short circuit issue. The vanity minor outside the bathroom is also a great addition, which can allow you to perform your grooming chores just like you do at home.

Because of its heavy-duty furnace that is capable of producing the required amount of indoor heat consistently, you can venture out to chilly terrains without worrying about catching a cold or flu. Its foundational structure has been reinforced with hurricane straps that give it the ability to withstand adverse climate conditions without putting the body of the bunker at any risk.

4. CampLite 13QBB

travel 4000

This ultra-light camper is not only known for its light bodyweight, but it also has a solid construction that can stay intact for many years to come. It has a dinette that be transformed into a regular bed and bunk installed on top of it, which can accommodate a child. It tubular aluminum frame gives it a highly sturdy exterior protection, which increases the security aspects of the passengers. From compact designs to spacious interiors, these 6 Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs cater to various travel needs and preferences, ensuring every journey is as enjoyable as possible.

The adventurer inside of all of us is unleashed when we go out and explore the world.  Be it on your own or with your family. All of nature- the majestic mountains, the mighty flowing rivers and waterfalls, the mysterious forests and woods, all seem to be welcoming you.

As fun and enthralling, as all this may sound, there exists a major blockage in your path, and that is accommodation.

Not everyone wants to stay in a hotel while traveling, or even a tent.  There’s the expense of it, the stale and lifeless accommodation offered by hotel rooms, or the lack of facilities offered by a tent.

Once you factor in the cost of eating out all of the time and additional expenses, you might want to consider your other options.

We love our Travel Trailer, as it solves many of these options, offering more flexibility than a hotel, and more luxurious accommodation compared to a tent.

However, even getting your hands on the perfect travel trailer is not as easy as it may seem or sound. There are a lot of factors that have to be kept in mind before choosing one and heading off on your first trip.

What To Look For In A Travel Trailer

The carrying capacity of the trailer is one of the deterministic factors to consider before leaving the comfort of your home. How much food, clothing, utensils, accessories , and miscellaneous stuff is required; all have to be thought of before just packing your things, stuffing it in the trailer, and hitting the roads.

Kitchen Area

No one likes cramped spaces when it comes to cooking and eating food. Hence, one should make sure that the kitchen accessories do not occupy a major chunk of the trailer area and limit your space for cooking and eating.

The mechanical design of a trailer is what determines the amount of drag force experienced by it while driving it around. If this design is not dynamic (or rather aerodynamic) enough, it will lead to a lot of resistance while driving at high speeds and consequently increase the amount of gas and fuel that you have to burn.

So, it is always economical and suggested to go with a trailer that has a design that is capable of cutting through the wind while minimizing its sway about its axle at the same time.

Everything on this big wide earth is made impressive and cool by the pack of features that it packs with itself. A trailer is no different. There have to be a bunch of features that make it stand out from an already existing crowd and options of countless other trailers. It is these features that can make or break the mind of you as a customer.

The same features are able to communicate with you on a personal level that helps you to decide whether or not you can see a comfortable second house in the trailer being shown to you or not.

Leveling System

In very simple words, the work of a leveling system is to automatically change and shift the front and rear heights of your trailer in order to compensate and reduce the load on the axle during a journey. As such, it is quite important that your trailer comes equipped with a leveling system to ensure that you do not have a breakdown at any point of time during your journey, particularly if your route is a bumpy one.

Many high-end trailers are equipped with a hydraulic leveling system but they are quite expensive at the same time, and if your pockets do not allow for such a heavy expenditure, then make sure that your trailer at least is equipped with electric leveling systems instead of manual ones.

Having unnecessary things in your trailer that you are not going to make use of in any manner on your trip just accounts for an overhead burden to maintain. But overall, they account for an unwanted increase in the weight of your trailer which is just going to be a burden for you and your vehicle (which is going to have to pull it all the way), and an unwanted and unnecessary surge in fuel expenses.

Considering that not every car can pull every trailer unless of course, you have an SUV or a heavy-engine vehicle at your disposal, it is more than practical enough to think of the perfect weight of the trailer that you shall choose for yourself.

So here we compile a list of some of the best trailers (under the weight of 4000 pounds) in our purview to assist and facilitate your decision to buy/rent one on your next trip. Keep in mind though that the list is not ranked from best to worst. It has just been drafted in no particular order.

Our Favorite Travel Trailers under 4,000 lbs

Kz sportsmen classic travel trailers.

“Looks are deceiving” is the perfect phrase, to sum up this trailer. Manufactured by a brand whose tagline in itself says “Keeping it Simple”, this trailer does more than enough justice to the same tagline. Standing pretty and comparatively small at almost 17 feet long, it would seem and sound pretty small and a congested place for those inhabiting it.

But all those judgments are put silently to rest when you become aware of the fact that it can very easily and comfortably accommodate up to 5 people with more than ample space still remaining and carrying a dry weight of just 2800 pounds! To complement all of this, the Sportsmen Classic offers you 7 contrasting choices of floorplans along with a bunch of features that give you the satisfaction of money well spent.

Many people may wonder that owing to its relatively small size (lengthwise at least), the trailer may have been compromised on various key and central highlights during its design and manufacturing. But if that had been the case, it would certainly not have made it to this list right?

A fully automatic power awning to keep the sun or rain or any unwanted element away from yourself, a beastly air conditioner operating at 8000 British Thermal Units (BTU), a furnace operating at a colossus 20,000 British Thermal Units, two stereo speakers standing firm at 6.5 inches each to give the best output of sound and to punch all those bass and treble sounds perfectly, are just some of the handy and cool features to make it a worthy consideration for you.

Club those with a 12-year warranty on all kinds of services in the trailer and what you get is an almost perfect and sweet little trailer that you can tow anywhere and everywhere with the utmost of ease.

FOREST RIVER R-POD TRAVEL TRAILERs

As long as we are discussing trailers and judging them by their weights, it is very hard to miss out on and exclude the Forest River R-Pod trailer from our list. Standing very sweetly at well under 3,000 pounds in its unloaded and dry weight, the Forest River R-Pod is as durable as a trailer can possibly get owing to its steel-crafted frame that is made tougher and stronger by a very fine 2-tone coating of fiberglass.

Standing a little longer than the Sportsmen Classic at almost 21 feet and a maximum housing capacity of 4 people, the Forest River R-Pod comes available with 9 different floor plans which means you have more than enough choices to go with the perfect layout of the interiors that suit your needs. Again, don’t be fooled by the fact that small and compact size means a cutoff in the features and functionalities of the trailer. Just like the Sportsmen Classic, the Forest River R-Pod throws fairy dust in your eyes and ridicules you for any misconceptions you possibly have regarding it.

A 20,000 BTU furnace, a mind-boggling and majestically large and powerful air conditioner operating at 13,500 BTU, a microwave, and separate detectors to keep a tab on the levels of carbon monoxide (CO), gas (LP), and smoke further ensure that there is absolutely no type of suffocation and feeling of choking and nauseousness to the inhabitants of the trailer. Furthermore, equipped with punchy and powerful speakers and adjustable electric brakes make sure that your journey is not only devoid of entertainment but also safe as hell on the roads (which can be highly unpredictable).

Customizations available in the form of tinted windows and an R-dome awning make the trailer no less than a premium-grade accessory to have and a more than worthy option to consider if you are on the lookout for one of the best things in the market.

KEYSTONE BULLET CROSSFIRE

In the department of the overall dry weight, the Keystone Bullet Crossfire is a clear loser to the likes of the Forest River R-Pod and the Sportsmen Classic. Where the R-Pod and the Sportsmen Classic stand very sweetly and pretty at less than 3000 pounds, the Keystone Bullet Crossfire is quite bulky in comparison- standing firmly at 3300 pounds. But don’t consider this weight as a basis for comparison, because just like its heavy-duty name, the Crossfire is a heavy-duty accessory in itself.

With a frame crafted out of double welded aluminum and a rooftop constructed out of galvanized steel, you are assured of one thing at least: that the ride across all kinds of terrains is going to be absolutely devoid of vibrations and bumps that are common with any kind of road trip. Furthermore, in order to make the rides, even more, bump and exertion-free, the Keystone Bullet Crossfire comes equipped with Monroe 34690 Gas-Magnum Truck Shock Absorbers. For those of you who don’t know what it is or what’s special about it, all you need to know is that it is one of the best suspensions by one of the best manufacturers.

The trailer comes equipped with a queen size Murphy bed which means you have more than ample space to walk around and not feel any sort of congestion in the surroundings. Apart from the master bedroom containing the Murphy bed, the Keystone Bullet Crossfire can accommodate a maximum of 4 people in a single go, making it an ideal choice for a family with at most 2 children.

The overall build is also really sturdy and durable at the same time, which is quite understood by the fact that the primary materials in its construction are steel and aluminum. As such, it is also understood at the same time that the drag force experienced while driving this trailer around shall also be minimal and would feel like a hot knife going through butter. To make you feel even more at home and to get rid of any homesickness you might get, mirrored wardrobes and reading lamps have been provisioned at the side of every bed with LED lighting to make the ambiance even more sophisticated and light.

Other accessories include a microwave oven, a Bluetooth stereo with both AM and FM support, a three-burner stove, skylights above the shower, and a sufficiently large-sized hanging closet wardrobe to accommodate almost everything that you decided to bring along with you.

KEYSTONE SPRINGDALE CLASSIC MINI

This particular trailer has been designed mostly for people looking to travel to chilly terrains owing to its gargantuan 20,000 BTU furnace. In its weight range and features on offer, it is fair enough to say that the Springdale Classic Mini triumphs over the Crossfire 1800RB very easily and very clearly. Weighing exactly 45 pounds less than the Crossfire RB, the Springdale Classic Mini stands 21 feet long in length and 3255 pounds in weight with a total housing capacity of up to 5 people, the Springdale Classic Mini is an almost perfect trailer containing a bunch of assorted features packed literally under its hood.

Just like the Crossfire 1800RB, the Springdale Classic Mini also comes equipped with a queen-sized Murphy bed situated just at the front of the trailer. Two separate bunk beds situated at the back side of the trailer along with the dining booth that can double up and shape-shift into additional sleeping space account for the 3 places where people can relax their backs at the end of a supposedly wonderful and adventure-filled day.

As far as the build and structure are concerned, the Springdale Classic Mini is as tough and durable as it gets owing to a structure that has been reinforced with hurricane straps keeping it steady and transfixed to its place even in the worst of scenarios. Constructed purely out of aluminum and reinforced steel, there is almost nothing that can penetrate the tough shield of a body that the Springdale Classic Mini carries with itself.

Miscellaneous features include overhead cabinets in the kitchen area, a microwave oven, an 8,000 BTU air conditioner, a 20,000 BTU furnace, an exhaust fan to keep the trailer devoid of any heat and smell arising from food, a 7-foot refrigerator for storing food and beverages, a small pantry to store all of your eatables, a minibar sort of area at the back of the trailer that opens up in the form of a boot, a stereo system with AM, FM, CD, and MP3 support whose output is delivered by 2 6 inch boombox speakers.

Also, to accentuate the storage space, a closet has been provisioned at the foot of the master Murphy bed which is only accessible when the bed has been folded back into the walls of the trailer.

COACHMEN CLIPPER ULTRA-LITE TRAVEL TRAILERs

Coachman as a brand and Clipper as a subsidiary series it, have already established themselves as one of the most trustworthy and quality options to choose from when it comes to buying a trailer that can satisfy each and every one of your descriptions and wants- factors that make a trailer perfect in your eyes. Weighing tremendously low at 2,500 pounds of dry weight, the Clipper Ultra-Lite can be literally considered feather-light in the world of trailers.

Standing pretty tall and long at 23 feet, the Clipper Ultra Lite offers you 13 different floor plans to choose from making it a perfect choice for all those people who have a thing or two about Vastu, feng shui, and that kind of stuff. The most intriguing thing about all these floor plans is that almost all of them have the sub-4000 pounds GVWR rating, giving you tons of free space inside the trailer while being extremely lightweight at the same time.

The building and construction material used in the framework and the body is something that Coachmen seem to have paid utmost attention to. Standard aluminum is replaced by factory-grade aluminum and steel is replaced by reinforced steel to give the Clipper Ultra-Lite a sturdy build. To reinforce the front and rear sections of the trailer, diamond plate coatings have been done to ensure that no sort of accidents and mishaps lead to fatal and major damage to the main body structure and consequently the passengers and inhabitants of the trailer are also as protected as they can be.

As for the features, the Clipper Ultra Lite has a lot many things to offer. A 20,000 BTU furnace to make sure that you are warm, cozy, and comfortable despite the weather outside, a staggeringly large 13,500 BTU air conditioner, walnut coating on all the furniture present inside, laminations on all kinds of surfaces and tops to ensure that nothing sticks to the surface and thus making it dirty and unappealing, tinted windows for privacy as well as safety, a skylight in the bathroom to give a natural touch to the washroom interiors, and a bunch of other cool and optional upgrades make the Clipper Ultra-Lite one of the contenders on this list vying for the ultimate crown of being labeled the best.

  FLAGSTAFF E-PRO TRAVEL TRAILER

Stylish, affordable, compact, and lightweight are just some of the adjectives that can be utilized to describe the RV E-Pro. Measuring 20 feet in length and standing sweetly at 3000 pounds heavy, the RV E-Pro is yet another great choice as a trailer for a small and sweet family looking to get away from their lives for a bit and rediscover themselves once again while strengthening their bonds and relations at the same time.

With a queen-sized bed situated at the rear of the trailer and a dinette doubling down as a bed that can easily accommodate two people, the has a total occupancy of 4 people in a single go. Both the beds have been provisioned with closets beside them to spoil you with laziness. No need of having to get out of bed to hang any clothes or get something new and fresh to wear.

You can just do so by sitting on your bed and grabbing/throwing whatever you need.

The key and highlighted features of the RV E-Pro include a microwave oven, a decent-sized refrigerator measuring three cubic feet, a 20,000 BTU furnace, an 8,000 BTU air conditioner, a carbon monoxide detector, a smoke detector, an LPG/Gas detector, an overhead cabinets in the kitchen to store cooking ingredients, hardwood drawers to prevent any sort of damage, tinted glasses, and windows to enhance security while giving the privacy at the same time, self-adjusting brakes that account for any miscalculation that you may make on the road while driving, and a stereo system with AM, FM, CD, DVD, and Bluetooth support and which delivers its output through 2 speakers transfixed at the back side of the trailer.

As far as the safety and build of the RV E-Pro are concerned, be rest assured that you are as safe as houses inside this trailer owing to its seamless coating of fiberglass on an already tough frame constructed out of aluminum, steel, as well as iron.

In your article dated July ly 3, 2019, “8 Travel Trailer Brands to Avoid Today,” you place Forest River in the #1 position, as you state: “Until the brand manages to put a stop to the growth of negative reviews, you should exclude all of its models from your shopping list. It’s simply unwise for you to invest on Forest River RVs knowing that you likely have to deal with a plethora of frustrating troubles. So save yourself a headache and just pass over vehicles that come from the brand.”

In your July 24, 2019, article titled “5 Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds,” you rate the Forest River R-Pod in the #1 position.

This is confusing, and perhaps misleading, too; do you consider the R-Pod to be the bright light in the Forest River brand, or should we be avoiding all Forest River products – including the R-Pod series – until the company sorts out its quality issues?

I have been looking at R-Pod, and if it’s destined to be a headache in some way, shape, and form, I’ll want to avoid it. What’s your current verdict on the product?

If you are looking for one of the best travel trailers under 5000 lbs you are sure to find a model that is perfect for you. Unfortunately, there are so many different models on the market that it can be challenging to narrow down the field to the very best choices.

If you are looking for a travel trailer that you can tow with a small truck or even some larger SUVs, there are many travel trailers under 5,000 lbs to choose from. We have investigated thousands of lightweight travel trailers to find the very best ones on the market today.

Our list of the ten best travel trailers under 5,000 pounds will give you some great ideas to start your search!

How We Chose The Top 2024 Travel Trailers Under 5000 Lbs

When we started looking for the 12 best travel trailers under 5000 lbs there were a lot of options to choose from. There are dozens of RV manufacturers in the United States, and many of them have stellar reputations.

As a result, it can be difficult to narrow down the field. However, there were a few factors we were able to look at to help us figure out what we thought were the 12 best travel trailers under 5000 lbs.

The first thing we did was look at the unloaded vehicle weight or dry weight. This is the weight of the vehicle when nothing has been loaded into it. It is the weight of the vehicle once the manufacturer has finished building it and nothing has been added to it.

Obviously, for these types of trailers, we were looking at options that weighed less than 5000 pounds. Many RVs and trailers weigh more than this, so we were able to narrow down the field significantly with this one factor.

After we found trailers that fit the weight specifications, we looked at other features that came with the trailers. For example, we looked for trailers that have bunkhouses and Murphy beds. Murphy beds are some of the best beds for travel trailers. And we wrote an article about them called 11 Best Travel Trailers with Murphy Beds .

We looked at floor plans, the overall quality of the trailers, and reviews from other credible sources. This way we could know for sure that these trailers were received well by consumers.

Travel Trailer UVW vs GVWR

We use the UVW or Unloaded Vehicle Weight to decide which campers fit into our category of best campers under 5000 lbs. Unloaded vehicle weight is also known as curb weight or dry weight. It is the weight of the camper trailer with nothing in it.

GVWR or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum allowable weight of the camper when loaded with all of your supplies, groceries, water, generator, or anything else you decide to pack into your camper.

So be sure your tow vehicle can tow more than 5,000 lbs if you are considering one of these models.

12 Best Travel Trailers Under 5000 lbs : 2024 Models

Here they are our list of travel trailers under 5000 lbs for 2024. We’re sure there will be something on this list for you!

1. Oliver Legacy Elite

Oliver Legacy Elite travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Sold factory-direct, so you get Oliver-specific components and accessories

⛔ Interior aesthetic is very sterile

  • Length: 18′ 5″
  • UVW: 3,700 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,000 lbs
  • CCC: 1,300 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 370 lbs

The first of our travel trailers under 5000 lbs on the list is the Oliver Legacy Elite , a niche camper with a dedicated fanbase. Oliver Campers aren’t known for their variety (there are only a few models, with a ton of customization options). The Legacy Elite is a boondocking machine, if you want it to be.

Everything that comes with or is available for Oliver campers is factory-direct, so you’re limited on third-party accessorizing as everything you want or need comes from Oliver. As you can imagine, this enables the company to have so many customization options that two camper lines feel like forty.

The Legacy Elite is built with four fiberglass shells (two inner and two outer), fused together, with interior cabinetry molded into the fiberglass. This fiberglass bubble takes 400 hours to make and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. It’s one of the strongest travel trailers you’re likely to find on the market.

Inside, the Legacy Elite is like Airstream, with an interior that matches the exterior aesthetic. There’s a wet bath, multiple bedding options, a sink, and a stovetop. Everything has its own compartment, including the batteries, and propane tank control. These trailers are known for towing very well, thanks to their slick, aerodynamic profiles.

2. Airstream Bambi

Airstream Bambi travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Despite the space limits, includes a 2-burner stove, sink, fridge, freezer, shower, and flushing toilet

⛔ There are space concessions for the shower, which makes for a very cramped space

  • Length: 16′ 1″
  • UVW: 3,050 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • CCC: 450 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

Airstream is one of the most instantly recognizable brands in the business. Their smaller line of travel trailers under 5000 lbs includes the Bambi , Sport, and Basecamp. Airstream is embracing the ideal of micro-living and it shows in their exceptional and growing lineup of small travel trailers.

The Bambi resembles a traditional Airstream in a much smaller format. The best part about this shrinking effort is that Airstream still manages to pack so much into a smaller space, while still retaining a sense of spaciousness in the design.

Inside, the Bambi looks like what you expect in an Airstream, with aluminum walls and overhead. Several adults will fit comfortably in the smallest Bambi model. The wet bath is a tight fit and probably the most constrained space in the entire package.

Everything else you’ll need for a long-term trip or boondocking out in the middle of nowhere is present. This includes the two-burner stove, a four-person dinette, a fridge and freezer, a large bed, a sink, and more than enough windows to light up the interior on a sunny day. Despite its small size, the Airstream Bambi is as comfortable as it gets.

3. Starcraft Super Lite Maxx

Starcraft Super Lite Maxx travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ The rear bathroom features a large corner tub/shower

⛔ It has a space-efficient but very ordinary layout

  • Length: 20′ 7″
  • UVW: 3,685 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,995 lbs
  • CCC: 1,130 lbs

The Starcraft Super Lite Maxx comes in four floorplans and they are all just as small as the model name implies. Don’t let the size fool you, however. These models are clearly designed with couples in mind and Starcraft did an outstanding job in such a small format.

The TuffShell fiberglass exterior is a highly resilient, vacuum-bonded, shell over an aluminum frame. It also comes with an enclosed, heated undercarriage for trips throughout the cold months. The focus of the Maxx clearly extends beyond what Starcraft can do with a small interior.

If you enjoy lounging outside, the Maxx has a lot to offer, including a hookup for a grill, a power awning, and wiring prep for a variety of outdoor peripherals.

Inside is standard fare, though it’s well made and arranged. The rear bathroom is a dry bath and it’s larger than the overall size of the camper suggests.

Residential vinyl flooring and the entire suite of entertainment and kitchen features are enough to turn this tiny space into a comfortable home away from home.

4. Jayco Jay Feather Micro

Jayco Jay Feather Micro travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Comes with an excellent outdoor Blackstone Griddle

⛔ Lacking in the window department

  • Length: 19′ 7″
  • UVW: 3,895 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 415 lbs

Jayco’s full pre-delivery inspections are a sign that Jayco is striving for quality out the door. The Jay Feather Mi cro is a high-quality product in a tiny package. Though it’s a little larger than some of the other travel trailers under 5,000 lbs on this list, the design is an obvious play for couples or maybe one-child families.

There are several options available for the interior appliances but all of the standard fare is here, including theater seating and a surprising amount of counter space.

If you like windows, the Feather Micro has them aplenty, and the overall interior aesthetic has that welcome home vibe that some RVs have difficulty replicating.

The Murphy Bed is a short queen but it’s perfect for expanding the space when not in use.

Outside, the 11′ awning is more than enough to shade a small family, with pass-through storage and a Blackstone Griddle. Also, Jayco’s Azdel wall materials are highly rated for long-term durability and the Feather Micro comes with a two-year warranty (an additional year added on for structure).

5. Keystone Passport Mini

Keystone Passport Mini travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ The HyperDeck high-performance, the water-resistant floor is excellent

⛔ Bunkhouse model feels a bit cramped, especially if you have all 6 sleepers

  • Length: 21′ 5″
  • UVW: 3,485 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,825 lbs
  • CCC: 1,340 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 425 lbs

Sleeping 6 and a Mini camper just don’t seem to mesh. However, the Keysto ne Passport Mini made it happen somehow, with plenty of room to spare. There’s more than one floorplan here but the above floorplan is the bunkhouse model, and you can see how much space is left over, even with a full house.

This is not an easy feat in travel trailers under 5000 lbs, and Keystone did make a few concessions. Fortunately, they are barely noticeable in a rig that contains a full dry bath, fridge, large sink, microwave, and stovetop, across from a four-person dinette and TV.

There’s not much in the way of counter space, the result of doing the most within a small space. The storage options and cabinetry are more than adequate for six people.

The exterior awning is powered and you also have access to pass-through storage, a 20-lb propane tank, quick-connects for solar panels, and all of the exterior panels feature strong magnetic clasps.

6. Winnebago Hike 100

Winnebago Hike 100 travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Thicker, high-insulation walls are excellent for thermal needs in the winter

⛔ Ventilation fan is definitely on the smaller side and doesn’t pull well

  • Length: 15′ 11″
  • UVW: 3,122 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,200 lbs
  • CCC: 1,078 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 576 lbs

The Winnegoago Hike 100 is one of the smallest campers on our list, yet it just doesn’t seem that way at all when you step inside.

Winnebago gets around the size limitations by making everything inside a flip or fold affair. The dual-opposing couches in the rear flip up and mount to the wall or fold completely out into a bed.

Meanwhile, you can pull an additional bed down from the overhead. The dinette flips up and down as well. Once everything flips up, there’s a surprising amount of standing room left in their wake.

The exterior is a similar arrangement, with flip-down tables and conveniently located storage panels that double as tables or counter space for a two-burner.

With the fold-up nature of the inside, the Winnebago Hike 100 becomes a pseudo-toy hauler, though you’re limited to things like bikes or large storage space for a ton of hiking gear.

Though the space is severely limited, there are several storage options as well. The wet bath features a cartridge toilet with a lid that rotates 90° when you need it out of the way.

7. r-pod 180C

r-pod 180C travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Azdel exterior walls

⛔ Refrigerator that comes with it is small, even for a small travel trailer

  • Length: 18′
  • UVW: 3,447 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,725 lbs
  • CCC: 1,278 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 359 lbs

The R-pod is an interesting product. Forest River took the teardrop design, melded it with a slide-out, extended it just a bit, and ended up with the final product, which is a pretty fine example of what you can do in travel trailers under 5000 lbs.

The slide contains the entire galley, so it feels a little compressed, with the sink, overhead cabinets, two-burner stove top, and fridge all in the same space. However, it works well for an individual cooking some breakfast.

The queen bed takes up the entire front while the full, dry bath takes up the entire rear.

For those worried about leaks in RVs, the entire roof is a single, seamless piece and the entire RV is built around a powder-coated steel frame for superior durability. If you have a pet dog along for the ride, the exterior even includes a utility hook for a long leash so your pup can get some exercise and outdoor time.

The aerodynamic design is a fuel-saver on the highway and the r-pod is known for being easy to tow.

8. Coleman Lantern LT 18BH

Coleman Lantern LT 18BH traveln trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Unique use of the cabinetry, providing ample stocking space that’s out of the way

⛔ Bathroom is nice but maybe a little cramped for some

  • Length: 22′ 8″
  • UVW: 3,585 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,400 lbs
  • CCC: 815 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 498 lbs
  • Sleeps: 5 to 6

Coleman is a name often associated with mini-propane cylinders, burner stoves, and lanterns. However, the Coleman brand in the RV world is actually made by Dutchmen, owned by Thor Industries. The Coleman Lantern LT 18BH is a surprisingly exceptional small RV.

The Murphy bed and smart placement of the corner bunks optimize the interior living space. The dinette folds into a sleeper as well, allowing for up to 6 sleepers if the Murphy and dinette sleepers are shared. There’s plenty of counterspace considering the tiny space and also plenty of cabinetry.

They even managed to cram a 10.7 ftÂł fridge into the limited space. Even the corner bathroom is surprisingly large. Outside, you get pass-through storage, a power tongue jack, a 20-lb LP tank, solar hookups, an exterior GFCI outlet, and galvanized wheel wells.

9. Lance 1575

Lance 1575 travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Lance 1575s come equipped with “situational” lighting, which is great for mood and ambiance.

⛔ The closet next to the fridge has no shelves and is designed like a bedroom closet. Weird.

  • Length: 20′ 5″
  • UVW: 3,590 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,600 lbs
  • CCC: 1,010 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 350 lbs

The Lance 1575 is the shortest name on our list of travel trailers under 5000 lbs, but it packs quite a punch all the same. The single slide is enough to turn this mini camper into a spacious home, especially for small families and couples.

The interior is heavy on the rich, honey-colored wood vibe, which people seem to either love or hate. The dual-pane skylight in the bathroom offers plenty of light, lifting that claustrophobic feel of a tiny bathroom.

You’ll love the three-burner stove since most RVs this size come with two-burners, the 21″ oven, and a 5 ftÂł fridge.

The walls are insulated and rest on an aluminum frame, with a one-piece PVC roof to minimize or eliminate leaks. The outdoor washing station is a nice touch for those who like to camp on the beach or spend a ton of time outdoors.

The coolest feature is the situational lighting, which you can change to match the mood indoors or out.

10. Coachmen Clipper 18DBS

Coachmen Clipper 18DBS exterior

✅ Jumbo pass-through storage is plenty large, along with a variety of storage options inside

⛔ Despite the storage size and options, the CCC is limited

  • Length: 23′
  • UVW: 3,919 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,900 lbs
  • CCC: 981 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 500 lbs

The Coachmen Clipper 18DBS is a deceptively lengthy but lightweight travel trailer. Though the exterior looks pretty much like a standard-fare camper, it includes an exterior shower, an LED electric awning, a mini fridge, pass-through storage, a 20-lb propane tank (with room for a 30-lb version), and an exterior kitchen with the included grill.

The interior offers some surprises of its own. These include a Murphy bed, a very large U-shaped dinette couch, and tons of small cabinets everywhere. Someone with an eye for organization can get quite creative with all of the little cabinets.

There are also some convenient closets for extra clothes storage or a neat little pantry conversion if that’s what floats your boat. The bathroom won’t blow you away but it’s a dry bath and large enough for all of your bathroom needs.

11. Scamp 16′

Scamp 16' travel trailers under 5000 lbs exterior

✅ Nearly invulnerable, waterproof bubble, fiberglass powerhouse of an RV

⛔ Scamps are very limited in the storage options

  • Length: 16′
  • UVW: 2,200 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 250 lbs

The Scamp , like the Oliver, is a niche camper that’s primarily a fiberglass-fused egg on wheels. In other words, it’s robust, highly durable, and stands out. You can roll one of these things down a mountain and it will probably be just fine once the dust settles at the bottom.

The Scamp 16′ is a variation of a small number of floorplans and, if you like the Oliver up above, you’ll love the Scamp for all of the same reasons. To save and maximize space, just about everything inside is convertible, flips, or folds in some way.

There are two floorplans included above just so you can have an idea how various these things are.

The outdoor shower is a nice touch for those looking to go off-grid, especially since some of the floor plans don’t include an interior one. Wet baths are the only kind you’ll find, however, no matter what floorplan you go with.

The Scamp is a very interesting travel trailer that can take a beating and is usually reserved by those who belong to a small but hardcore group of fans. However, those fans love Scamp for many reasons, all of which are completely valid.

12. Grand Design Imagine 15RB

Grand Design Imagine 15RB exterior

✅ Nice shoe storage option directly under the booth seat adjacent to the door!

⛔ Only sells at partnered dealerships and are priced a little higher than comparable brand/models

  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • UVW: 3,594 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,795 lbs
  • CCC: 1,201 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 378 lbs

Last but not least on our list of travel trailers under 5000 lbs is the Grand Design Imagine 15RB . This slick little travel trailer includes a power awning with an LED strip, an entire outdoor kitchen, and pass-through storage with a grip surface.

It may sound like a silly feature but Grand Design was so meticulous in their design strategy for this model that they even included a little shoe cubby to the left of the entranceway. The cubby is nestled into the back of one of the bench seats on the dinette, revealing Grand Design’s effort to pack comfort and convenience into a tight package.

The inside also includes plenty of living space, with interesting LED lighting that runs along the horizontal seams in the overhead. There is a ton of cabinetry on either side of the front-end couch. The couch folds out into a queen-sized Murphy bed, which is very well hidden when not in use.

The kitchen is spacious, with lots of storage options, a sizeable fridge, and a two-burner stovetop. The dry bath takes up the rear of the RV and is large enough for plenty of movement without banging shoulders with the wall.

Advantages of Travel Trailers Under 5000 Lbs

Before you settle on which trailer to purchase you will have a lot to consider. One of the most important things to decide on is the size and weight of your trailer. There are benefits to getting a small and large trailer. Here we will look at some of the advantages of purchasing one of the best travel trailers under 5000 lbs.

Easy to Tow

Firstly, it is incredibly easy to tow a travel trailer under 5000 lbs. Most trucks and vehicles will be able to pull a trailer of this size and weight.

With a lot of travel trailers, you will need to purchase a tow vehicle as well because the vehicle you already own cannot pull it. However, with a travel trailer under 5000 pounds there is a much smaller chance that you will need to do this.

Inexpensive

Price is always a factor when it comes to purchasing a travel trailer, RV, or camper. After all, these are always big financial commitments. However, when you purchase one of these travel trailers under 5000 lbs you will not need to pay as much as you would with a larger option.

Most of these trailers are sold for under $30,000 which is a big improvement from the larger options which can sometimes cost upwards of $50,000. So, if finances are a big factor for you, you should consider one of the cheaper options.

Great Floor Plans

Another great part about these lightweight trailers is that they have great floor plans. Part of what makes them lighter is that they do not have as many things cluttering up the area. As a result, the manufacturers can get more creative with the floor plans. So, you should be able to find one that is perfect for you.

Lots of Storage

Despite their smaller size, you do not need to worry about storage with most of these trailers. They still have all the storage you need. You will be able to pack almost anything you want in one of these lightweight trailers.

Additionally, since they are already lightweight you can get away with packing extra. Even with all the extra gear you probably will not need to worry about weight restrictions.

Maneuverability

Finally, maneuverability is a big factor for all travel trailers, RVs, and campers. Traveling with a trailer can be challenging for someone inexperienced because certain roads are not great for trailers.

Larger trailers can not go down certain passageways, and some roads are too dangerous for large vehicles. As a result, you may not be able to go to certain areas with a large trailer. However, when you purchase a travel trailer under 5000 lbs you will not have this issue.

You will be able to drive down most roads, and you can pass over almost all bridges. As a result, you will not be restricted on which campgrounds you can stay at.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for My Camper?

Wholesale Warranties How Much Does an RV Warranty Cost?

Yes – but not from a dealership! Unfortunately, your odds of suffering a major mechanical breakdown go up with every passing year. Based on RV Warranty claims records, more than 3 out of every 10 RVs will need major repairs in only their second year on the road.

This skyrockets to 8 out of 10 in their fifth year, and virtually ALL of them in their eighth year! Today’s RVs are increasingly more complex, and with more things to go wrong, the need to protect your investment is more important than ever.

You can read all about why we bought a warranty through Wholesale Warranties for several reasons:

  • We can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated refund
  • We can transfer the warranty to the new owner if we decide to sell our RV
  • There are no mileage caps on our policy
  • We can use repair shops all across the country
  • We can use a mobile repair company right at our campsite
  • The price is way better than most dealerships
  • We could finance the cost of the warranty
  • With parts and labor prices increasing all the time, we have peace of mind

You owe it to yourself to at least check out a warranty and get a free quote to see if it is right for you. It just takes a few minutes and you will learn a ton about protecting your investment. We only recommend products we use ourselves and we highly recommend you get a free quote from Wholesale Warranties .

Should You Rent A Camper Before Buying One?

Susan and I are asked all the time for our advice about which trailer people should buy and we always say the same thing.

If you have never owned a travel trailer before then you should rent one BEFORE you buy one. The same advice applies to any type of RV you might purchase.

We rented a Class C RV before we bought our Class C and we are really glad we did. We learned that we wanted the shortest possible Class C RV with a queen-sized bed and a dry bath. Since we had to sleep in the over-cab and we had a wet bath in our rental and we did not like either of those features.

But if we didn’t rent before we bought we could have made a poor buying decision that could have cost us thousands. Remember, RVs go down in value the minute you drive them off the lot. Some depreciate as much as 25% in the first year alone! And by year 3 or 4, you will be lucky to sell it at 60% of what you paid for it.

And, we always recommend Outdoorsy for RV rentals . They have great customer service, outstanding reviews, and a huge selection of RVs all across the US and Canada. They are the most trusted and secure way to rent an RV.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travel 4000

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travel 4000

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travel 4000

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut dĂ©cor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travel 4000

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travel 4000

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Page Six can exclusively reveal that the “Kardashians” star checked into the ultra-luxurious Hotel Negresco’s Marie Antoinette suite, which currently costs about $4,000 per night.

During the city’s peak season in the summer, rates can drastically increase.

Although the hotel’s basic rooms are listed online, the Marie Antoinette suite is available only by inquiry.

Jenner, 26, brought 5-year-old Stormi with her to France for Paris Fashion Week and treated her to an 861-square-foot suite that featured a Mediterranean Sea view, a terrace, spa-style bathroom and more.

The Kylie Cosmetics founder appeared to take full advantage of her digs, as she shared a snap of a lavish breakfast spread that had been set up in the salon as well as photos of her admiring the stunning view from her bedroom.

Jenner and Stormi, whose father is Travis Scott, had a whirlwind week matching at the presentations for Jacquemus and Valentino Haute Couture. When the reality star’s older child stayed behind, she was seen spending time with reunited pal Jordyn Woods and her half-sister Kim Kardashian .
