As the Spring of 2016 sees the award winning eleven piece folk big band Bellowhead finally reach the end of their illustrious road in the second part of a sell out tour, they do the decent thing and provide fans with a souvenir of  the final rounds of their exuberant live show. Two discs and a DVD should keep heartbroken fans reasonably sated as their heroes bid adieu and head into the sunset.

The outcry in the Summer of 2015 when Bellowhead  announced the decision to call time on their reign was something akin to the break up of The Beatles. Or Take That. Fans were distraught. Some will have wept and many more will weep come Sunday 1 st May at Oxford Town Hall when they leave the stage for the final time.  Even at LTW we speculated that it might just be a break and like many bands who retire/call it quits/take a break, we’d see another incarnation of Bellowhead in the future (see article here ), yet in hindsight, it does appear to be, as they say, it.  Of course, when you make a such a big thing of announcing a final farewell tour, sell out all the gigs and produce an album and film then it would be hard, never mind egg on the face embarrassing (“erm…we’ve changed our minds”) to reunite despite the attraction of a reunion five, ten, fifteen years down the line.

So here’s a set which stands as the souvenir of the first part of the farewell tour from November 2015. The full show at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall from   November 2015   provides the visual aspect. A seated audience sit reverential anticipation as the camera follows the trail from dressing room to stage, Spinal Tap style (wonder if they shouted “rock and roll” and “Hello Leicester”?). As the band file onto the stage, it brings to mind the superstitions of noted footballers – Paul Ince at Manchester United always liked to be last in line and remained shirtless until the very last moment before he left the tunnel. There are no topless shenanigans here, probably very little fuss to be honest as the band take their starting places in the shadows. An hour later, they’ll have shift all round the stage, up and on the blocks of multi-coloured ‘Pandemonium’ album designs and generally invading one another’s space.

Like most if not all concert films, it can never replicate the thrill of being there. On the other hand there’s the variety of angles you’ll never get from some nice crowd views from the side amidst the front of stage runner and side view from the monitor desk. It’s sensibly edited too with lots more lingering  rather than quick fire editing. A few sepia tints creep in on ‘Black Beetle Pies’ and ‘London Town’ although you can never have enough wide shots to garner the atmosphere, especially when the audience get to their feet – always a sign that the dials as well as the band are going to start jumping. Interesting to see too how the  stage production and set have moved on from their early days and the ‘Burlesque’ album stage show – bare and fashions bordering on charity shop chic – which now sees the stage festooned with decorated platforms, backdrops and a sophisticated and well planned lighting design.

Of course, it’s really about the music and the 2 CDs rather than simply replicate the Leicester set in audio form offer something different with a collection of 29 songs from across the tour, not necessarily in any sort of setlist order. It at least  allows the evolving and ever changing setlist to record the one off or rare performances of songs such as ‘The Wife Of Usher’s Well’ or ‘Sloe Gin’ tunes set  and ‘Jordan’ from the earlier days which popped in and popped out of the set. Weighted heavily in favour of the latter day Bellowhead, ie, the last three albums,  Andy Bell’s mix allowing for some separation in the instruments and voices sometimes lost in the live mix and the euphoria of the concert setting.

Away from the main spine of the set the unrecorded tune set ‘March Past’ proved to be a revelation, working its way into one of the coveted spots later in the set when all hell (within reason – this is a folk gig) could let loose. Ending the film  with the new to Bellowhead song  ‘Down Where The Drunkards Roll, by  Richard Thompson, it was a piece which closed the show in a well of dewy eyed melancholy – possibly a copyright issue? And a song which doesn’t appear to  be the set closer on the final leg of the tour which rolls on as we speak – perhaps it would be too much for fans t bear – never mind the band being able to get through it knowing the context.  A poignant moment indeed and a chance to appreciate that alongside the euphoric  celebrations  that Bellowhead have become famous for generating, when it comes down to it,  they are a damn good band.  As The Seekers would say, the carnival is over.

Bellowhead Live: The Farewell Tour – Album Review

Moris Tepper - Building a Nest

This has been a rum old year for the music world. A good number of genuinely legendary artistes have shuffled off this mortal coil in the last 4 months. 2016 also sees the demise of one of the best live bands on the circuit. Less of a shock, as we have known for a while that Bellowhead were calling it a day for some time now, but no less of a sense of loss for those who love their music.

Before they go, however, there’s one last go round. Bellowhead Live is the sumptuously packaged reminder of what a band they are. A double CD of tracks from various gigs on the first part of their long goodbye, and a DVD of their gig at Leicester De Montford Hall in November 2015, in hardback book form, featuring great live photos of the band.

All too often, live albums are an afterthought: Either a contractual obligation, or souvenir for hardcore fans, often shoddily recorded, or sometimes note-for-note recitations of the album versions. This is not the case with Bellowhead Live. Some of the more recent studio albums have only really clicked with me fully, after I have seen the songs performed live. Then I could go back to the albums and appreciate them fully. This album cuts out the middleman and delivers, direct to the soul.

There are a number of unsung heroes on Bellowhead Live. First of these is Andy Bell, who not only did the live sound for the gigs, but also produced the Live album. What a pair of ears that man has. He manages to capture subtleties and textures that I had not heard in Bellowhead before. A big band, with complex arrangements, and a huge variety of instruments, and each one is clearly audible. The recording has a clarity and warmth that is rarely heard in studio albums, let alone a live recording. It’s like the band is playing right in front of you. I haven’t heard such an alive live album since The Band’s Rock of Ages. Stunning.

This superb mix lets the other unsung heroes of the band shine through. Pete Flood hits everything in sight with precision and deftness, Benji Kirkpatrick’s guitar, mandolin and disco banjo, drives the band in everything they do. And then there’s John Spiers. As a melodeon player myself, it has been an utter joy to hear the melodeon really clearly in the mix. I have gained a whole new appreciation of John’s skill as a result of this, and this is the heart of the Bellowhead sound. Often buried in the mix, on Live , it shows a man with technique and passion.

Jon Boden is a superb lead for the band. It is no wonder that, in spite of having other excellent potential lead people, when Jon decided to call it a day, the band decided they didn’t want to go on without him. Even with cheeky scamp Sam Sweeney and class clown Paul Sartin, and the superb musicianship of all the other players, Jon Boden is too big a gap to fill. Check out the DVD for a masterclass in keeping an audience in the palm of your hand.

And then there’s the sheer range of music on offer. Bellowhead are a band who are as influenced by Brecht and Weill as much as Vaughn-Williams and Sharp. They do angular, tender, dark, powerful, nuanced, driving, funky or celebratory; sometimes in the same song. And such utter joy. I have never seen a group of musicians who make being in a band look so much damned fun! The DVD part of the gig ends as one big party.

I am off to see the band for one last time. I will say my goodbyes whilst jumping up and down. No doubt there will be mixed emotions. But I will have the music on this album to come back to time after time. And by gosh, it will make me grin from ear to ear. So long, and thanks for all the memories.

Although they began and continued to work as a duo, John Spiers (melodeon) and Jon Boden (fiddle and vocals) had a vision of a larger sound for their music. In 2004, they put together Bellowhead (the name derived from their album Bellow) to play the Oxford Folk Festival. The 11-piece group was an immediate success, its mix of strings and brass virtually unprecedented in traditional English folk music. They took the band into the studio that autumn to record a five-track teaser, E.P.onymous, which proved very popular with fans as well as industry types, and settled into playing festival gigs (about the only ones that could afford them), increasing their repertoire and bedding in as a group. Something of a bidding war ensued to sign Bellowhead, with German label Westpark the eventual winner, and Burlesque, their full-length debut, appeared in 2006. The tighter Matachin, released in 2008, veered from dark cabaret to a mad New Orleans band. Umbrellowhead (2009) and Hedonism (2010) followed. The latter went on to become the biggest-selling independently released folk album of all time with over 60,000 copies shipped. The band also recorded the theme tune to BBC Radio 4's Ambridge Extra, a spin-off from the iconic soap opera The Archers. In 2011, they released a live DVD of their performance at Bournemouth’s O2 Academy entitled Hedonism Live. A fourth album called Broadside was released in 2012, produced by John Leckie and recorded at Rockfield Studios. It was met with a positive response and gave them their biggest success to date, reaching number 16 in the national U.K. charts. During the latter part of 2012, the band toured the record across the U.K. and Europe. In 2014, they ended ten years of staunch independence by signing with Island, for whom they recorded their fifth album, Revival, with big-name pop producer Rupert Christie. The album was released in June of that year. During the summer of 2015, the band announced their separation; a mutual decision following Jon Boden's intent to step down as frontman; the group felt the project would never be at its best unless they were all together. Bellowhead decided to bid farewell with one last national tour, which was recorded and released as Bellowhead Live: The Farewell Tour in early 2016. ~ Chris Nickson

About Bellowhead

In their decade of existence, 11-piece folk ensemble Bellowhead cut a mighty swath through the U.K. folk scene adapting sea chanteys, dance tunes, and other traditional fare into exuberant, complex arrangements that paired brass, accordion, and fiddle with strong group harmonies. A festival favorite with five popular albums to their credit, they announced their impending breakup in early 2015, followed by a "best-of" anthology and a farewell tour. ~ Timothy Monger
