Nils Frahm performs his new project Music For London in a four-night residency at the Barbican Hall from 11th-14th July 2024.
Thursday 11 July Friday 12 July Saturday 13 July Sunday 14th July
When it comes to defining the space between classical and electronic music, hardly any other name is mentioned as often as that of the Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, and his sonic alchemy of ambient textures and atmospheric electronica, has won him many fans around the world. Numerous tours and concerts all over the globe have strengthened his reputation as both an exceptional instrumentalist and a fascinating live musician. His albums have garnered international acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and his live shows are regularly sold out.
Following on from his first solo piano works and a collaborative record with cellist Anne Müller, Nils Frahm’s breakthrough album Felt was released on Erased Tapes Records in 2011. Two years later and after extensive touring, Frahm returned to critical acclaim with his album Spaces, expressing his love for experimentation and answering his fan’s call for a record that truly reflects what they experience during his live shows. In 2015, Frahm launched Piano Day, an official global body created with his closest friends to celebrate the piano via various innovative, piano-related projects and concerts around the world. That same year, Frahm’s first film score release, Music For The Motion Picture Victoria written for the one-take feature film by Sebastian Schipper, won the esteemed German Film Prize for Best Soundtrack. Other film work includes a collaborative score with Woodkid for Ellis, a short film by French artist JR featuring Robert De Niro, as well as contributions to James Gray’s Ad Astra starring Brad Pitt and Julian Rosefeldt‘s Manifesto with Cate Blanchett.

Nils Frahm Retreats
Stepping back from studio-on-tour mode.
This appeared in the March 21, 2024 , issue of the This Week in Sound email newsletter, also the newsletter’s 22nd Listening Post.
Nils Frahm has become one of today’s great one-man bands. He travels the world with enough equipment to fill a professional recording studio, hauls it from city to city, venue to venue, sets up shop for a day or two, and then noodles live to the adoration of fans who marvel at his ambidexterity, his technological fluency, and his theatricality. Brian Eno once suggested that the studio was itself an instrument, and while what Frahm does these days with that concept is in many ways the opposite of what Eno meant, it still works.
It’s also, by all appearances, exhausting. Hence Frahm’s recent album, Day (it came out March 1), on which he retreats from overkill, returning to the simple solo acoustic piano compositions that made him something of an emo ambient heartthrob in the first place.
https://nilsfrahm.bandcamp.com/album/day
The close microphones capture his playing in all its evocative interiority: the mechanisms of the keys, the ins and outs of his breathing, and creaks in the floorboards. At one point you hear a dog barking, echoing down a hallway. The album feels like a series of wordless entries in a wordless diary from a stint in tech-addiction rehab. The intimacy is kind of intoxicating in its own way, though you do have to sort out if these are compositions or one-time noodly improvisations — and whether that matters, given how great it is to listen to.

Rimowa Unveils Archive-Inspired Hammerschlag Collection
A two-style collection limited to just 966 and 1,898 pieces in each model, and a partnership with musician and composer nils frahm..
Founded in 1898, Rimowa is one of a few brands today that can lay claim to having operated across three separate centuries, and, with its latest release , the German maison delved deep into its own archive to seek inspiration. The result: H ammerschlag , a limited-edition, two style capsule that sees Rimowa reimagine the archival icon from which the collection gets its name, reviving it for modern times as the Hand-Carry Case Hammerschlag, and complimenting it with a new style in the form of the Cabin Hammerschlag.
German for “hammer hit”, H ammerschlag refers to a technique used by Rimowa craftsmen to make distinctive patterns on the outer metal frames of the bags. The dimples created capture and reflect light in a way flatter, non-textured surfaces do not, and h ammerschlag bags became beloved in their time for their unique looks. Rimowa’s new version brings all of the charm of its predecessor with a sense heritage and vintage appeal found throughout the new bags, including the bags’ handles, modeled after a 1966 version Rimowa held in its archive, and the cognac- colored luggage tag that’s stamped with 1898.
