The Best Web-Based Games for iPhone
Forget downloading a game, just play right in the browser

- Mobile Gaming
The iPhone has served as a natural platform for games since the device was first released to the market. Having a little time-killer with you whenever you need it has a lot of appeal.
Although Apple's App Store features thousands of games you can download and run on your iPhone, in the early days of the iPhone, options were a bit more constrained. So some developers developed games that would run in a Safari window, sized to mimic the look-and-feel of a non web-based games before such games were widely available for download.
More than a decade after the iPhone's release, many of those Safari games still exist. They may appear a bit rudimentary, but most are free and—like their platform-app counterparts—addicting time sinks. And as an added bonus, the Safari-based games don't require a download, which is helpful if you're constantly battling a storage-full problem on your device.
Web-Based Games
These games don’t need to be installed — just point the iPhone’s Safari web browser to these sites and you’ll be ready to play!
- Battlefleet – A Battleship-style game.
- MacMost Suite – A suite of a dozen games, including solitaire, minesweeper, and Sudoku.
- Minesweeper – Classic desktop time waster.
- Solitaire – The well-known card game.
- Solitaire – Another version of the card game.
- Vegas Hearts – Vegas-style card game.
- Video Poker – Just like at the casino, but free!
- Mastermind – Board game transferred to the web.
- Chess – Self-explanatory...hopefully.
Installable Games
Some older games were intended for side-loading into a jailbroken iPhone, for example, iPhone Doom — a version of the popular FPS Doom for the iPhone.
Although installable games were popular in the early days of the iPhone, Apple's tightening security standards (making jailbreaking almost impossible with modern versions of iOS ) and the proliferation of apps and games in the App Store make installable games a relic of the device's early years.

It gets really intense as you’ll be called out for death-defying stunts over massive waterfalls, public waterways, and more. The best iPhone games in 2023: 31 games you need to play right now
When you have the best iPhone , you pretty much have infinite possibilities for keepingbusy and entertained, no matter where you are. Sure, the iPhone may not be marketed as a gaming phone specifically, but it’s pretty powerful — especially with the A17 Pro in the latest iPhone 15 Pro . That new processor means the Apple mobile gaming experience is only getting better and better, with Apple’s new chip being able to play console-level games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the Resident Evil 4 remake .
While those games aren’t available yet, there’s no shortage of great games to play. But when the App Store has over a million apps, how are you supposed to find the best games to play? Don’t worry — we’re here to help! Since there are a ton of games out there — and not every game is a winner — it’s definitely hard to find games that are worth your time and energy. Whether you’re looking for a simple match 3, an MMORPG, a dungeon crawler, or even something to just relax with, here are the best iPhone games you can play right now.
Most, if not all, of the titles we are recommending will work on any iPhone that has iOS 17 on it, which goes as far back to the iPhone XS . If you’re still on iOS 15 or 16, then you should also be fine with these titles. Make sure to also check out our list of the best iPhone apps . And if you’re an Android user, don’t miss our best Android games roundup.

Call of Duty: Mobile
Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil may only just be making their way to iOS, but Call of Duty: Mobile has been delivering a console-like experience for years now. If you want to get your shooting on, then here is a great place to start. You control the game with the on-screen buttons and joystick, and while it takes a little getting used to, it becomes natural fairly fast. Call of Duty: Mobile isn’t short of updates either, with new seasonal events and updates dropping very regularly, so you don’t need to worry about running out of content or getting bored easily. Support for the game goes all the way back to the first iPhone SE and iPhone 6S, so it’s available for most iOS users out there. It’s free to play, but it has microtransactions.
Clash of Clans
It’s one of the most popular classic games on iOS, so we’d be remiss if we didn’t include Clash of Clans on here. You’ve probably played it or something like it, but it’s always good to jump back in and see what’s new. For the uninitiated, Clash of Clans has you build your own cartoon village, collect resources, and gradually build it up over time. You can also join with other players to attack opposing clans and become involved in massive wars across the globe. It’s free-to-play, but you can pay for boosts and all the usual microtransactions.
Dumb Ways to Die 4
It’s huge on TikTok, and for good reason: Dumb Ways to Die 4 is a collection of fun minigames where your challenge is to stop your bean from dying. This is, unsurprisingly, the fourth major release in the Dumb Ways to Die canon, but you don’t need to worry that the developers are running out of ideas. There’s a big new collection of minigames to solve and beans to save, collect, and upgrade. You can even go online and challenge your friends and family to see who can survive for the longest. It’s free, but you can pay to remove ads and get extra in-game currency.
CarX Street
Racing games are one of the best showcases of a phone’s graphical abilities, but it’s not all about the good looks. CarX Street puts you in the shoes of a street racer in a dynamic open world. Take up races, beat your rivals, and become the best driver in the city. There’s an intricate car upgrade system, and you can tune your car for certain races, tune up the specs, and change the style and design too. It works best with the iPhone X or newer due to the memory demands.
My Singing Monsters
If we asked you, “What do monsters do?” you probably wouldn’t reply, “Sing, of course!” Regardless, that’s what your monsters in My Singing Monsters do. Collect and breed up to 250 monsters on your island, and hear your song change and grow over time. Add decorations to customize your island, and you can play with friends around the world and partake in worldwide events all year around. It’s free-to-play but does have microtransactions.
Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior
Live that kung fu film dream and fight off hordes of enemies with your martial arts skills in Stick Fight: Shadow Warrior . Endless waves of foes will spawn, and it’s up to you to survive for as long as you can. Take on boss samurais to unlock rewards, and take on more difficult levels. As you fight, you also unlock cool new cosmetics and items, so your stick fighting can look even cooler. A fun casual fighting game that’s ideal for bored fingers.
Marvel Snap
Marvel seems to be really enjoying releasing mobile games these days, as Marvel Snap is only the latest of a number we’ve had thrown at us recently. Still, it’s really good and well worth your attention. Essentially a card battling game, Marvel Snap is fast-paced, and battles rarely lost longer than a few minutes. Gameplay is simple: Each of your cards has a strength number, and your job is to place them into any one of three lanes facing your opponent. If your number is higher, you win! But watch out, more than a few cards have special powers that can swing lanes in an instant, so you need to make sure you’re playing the right cards at the right moments. It’s free to play, but you can pay to get access to in-game currency and new cards.
It’s a classic, and it’s back on our list. Among Us! is one of the best hidden killer, mafia-style games around, and it’s brilliantly suited to being played on mobile. Work together with four to 15 players to get your ship ready for launch — but there’s a twist! A number of players are secretly Imposters who want to murder everyone else on the team. Your job, if you’re not an Imposter, is to fix your ship while also figuring out who the Imposters are. Seeing them enter vents, doing things they shouldn’t, or just murdering people are clues you should be looking out for — but keep in mind you’ll need to convince everyone else you’re not lying …
Airport Simulator: First Class
Apparently, we’re a little addicted to plane games at the moment, but this time you’re not flying one, you’re giving them somewhere to land. Airport Simulator: First Class puts you in charge of an airport. Build it up, sign up airlines to your amazing new airport, and make sure everything is in place for all of your customers. There’s a lot to juggle here, but if you love management games then there’s a lot to love here. It’s free-to-play, but there are the usual in-game boosts for real money, so avoid this if you don’t like those.
Stumble Guys
Stumble Guys may seem a little familiar if you’re a fan of battle royale party games, but that doesn’t detract from how much fun it is. Stumble Guys is an online multiplayer party game where you go up against 31 other players in a bid to be the last person standing in a series of fun games. Knock your rivals off the stage and reach the end first to win. It’s a lot of fun, with lots of different levels to tackle. It’s especially fun if you get a bunch of friends together to play — and then knock them all out and take the win yourself.
Cell to Singularity: Evolution
The idle game genre is an interesting one and something that’s largely exclusive to the smartphone. Cell to Singularity: Evolution starts with the humble amino acid in a simulation, ruled over and overseen by yourself. Tap the screen to increase your resources, or just leave your phone alone for a while and let them build up by themselves. Use the points gained to upgrade those acids into DNA, single cells, multiple-celled organisms, and beyond. There’s a simple pleasure to watching the numbers increase, and eventually, you’ll be able to unlock the dinosaur and galaxy simulations as well. Restart each simulation to access upgrades and, well, keep making numbers bigger. If you don’t get it, you’ll be confused about why these games are so popular, but if you’re a fan, you’ll love this.
Hearthstone
It’s the biggest and (arguably) the best digital collectible card game on mobile, so if you love playing competitive card games, then Hearthstone is a must-download. The premise is simple — play minions and cast spells to control the gameboard, and eventually, punch your opponent in the face until they lose. But there’s a depth to this simple premise, and you can spend hours finely tweaking your decks to adapt to the latest meta. It’s free to play, and you can buy card packs using the in-game currency and earn powerful cards through the in-game rewards track. However, you’re going to be encouraged to spend money to get more cards quickly, so gird your wallet if you’re diving in head-first.
The Lord of the Rings: War
The Rings of Power has reignited our love for everything Tolkien, so why not play a game set in the same universe? The Lord of the Rings : War is set in Tolkien’s beloved fantasy creation and puts you in the shoes of a faction of Middle-earth. Fight against the other factions for the One Ring, recruit new commanders, and even forge your very own ring of power. A large amount of Middle-earth is available to adventure through as you build your team and create an enormous army. It’s free to play, but it does have microtransactions.
Games of Thrones: Conquest
Game of Thrones is back in the public eye with the release of House of the Dragon , and if you can’t get enough of everyone’s favorite quasi-medieval series, then you should try out Game of Thrones: Conquest. If you’ve played any city builders before, then the format will be familiar to you — gather resources, fortify your army, and create buildings. As you might expect, given the lore, you’re given a dragon to raise and protect, and you’ll be able to use it with your armies to expand your influence and create great alliances. You can also gather hero cards and assign them to your council to get bonuses.
Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle
Dragon Ball Z holds a special place in many people’s hearts, and there’s no shortage of games set in Akira Toriyama’s manga-turned-anime. Dokkan Battle is a slightly different twist on the franchise’s formula, and while the high-octane, chi-fueled battles remain, they’re through the medium of matching colored orbs. Tap the right orb to send your energy up to your enemy and hit them with super-strong special moves. It’s difficult to explain but easy to pick up and worth a quick download if you’re interested in the legendary series.
Red’s First Flight
Ignore the terrible name — this is Angry Birds . Yes, the original version, with no in-app purchases and nothing to distract from the sheer joy of destruction. Take apart the precarious fortresses of those greedy pigs with nothing but the noggins of your furious avian friends and, if needed, the Mighty Eagle as a backup. You’ve probably played this before and saw the original you loved disappear behind troves of microtransactions and “upgrades.” Pay your dollar, go back to the original, and just enjoy the simple fun of Angry Birds .
We’re big lovers of large beardy people in pointy helmets around here, and Northgard is just the game we’ve been waiting for. Northgard is a survival game, but instead of controlling a single, beleaguered explorer, you control a group of Vikings looking for new lands. Manage your scarce resources and Vikings carefully, as you’ll need to balance both in order to survive this harsh land of undead warriors and dire wolves. There’s a multiplayer mode and a single-player storyline, and you’ll need to master the different skills of the six clans in order to conquer both. While it’s on the expensive side for an iOS game, there’s no doubt that Northgard offers hours of fun for just $7.
Albion Online
MMORPGs are nothing new, but what about an MMORPG that can be played on a PC, Mac, Android, or iOS device? With the same account and the same characters? Add a completely player-driven economy, a class-less system where your class is dictated by your outfit, and an endgame that lets guilds compete for vast swathes of Albion in enormous open-world battles and you’ve got a game that is very interesting indeed. If nothing else, it’s worth experimenting with. Albion Online is free-to-play, but as you might have guessed, it has paid elements and a premium subscription for the truly hooked.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
A PC gaming staple, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is now an exceptionally good iOS game as well. While it’s easier to enjoy on a larger screen, like on an iPad , it still works extremely well on an iPhone. The game puts you in charge of an emerging historical civilization, and you must make the big decisions that decide whether your people spread and flourish, or struggle and diminish. Start in the stone age, and develop your technology, taking your civilization through thousands of years, until you’re capable of putting people on Mars. It’s free for the first 60 turns but costs $10 to upgrade to the full game.
Zombie Gunship Survival
Surviving the zombie apocalypse is a genre we’ve encountered many times before, but we doubt you’ve ever faced it from the gunning position of an AC-130 gunship. Zombie Gunship Survival is the perfect antidote if you’re sick of slowly building up your resources and hitting zombies with sticks. Instead, jump straight into your gunship and blow them all to kingdom come. Build up your airbase to defend against zombie attacks, and personally lead your troops in tactical operations against the dead. Some reviews complain about microtransactions, but others mention it’s a fairly light touch compared to other games. Worth the download for something new.
Sim Companies
Reckon you could run a great business, if only you were given the chance? Give it a go in Sim Companies . Specialize your company in a number of different ways, and test your capitalist skills against other players as you battle to become the top dog. Your success will come down to how well you can watch the virtual economy and watch out for trends you can take advantage of. It’s free-to-play, but there are microtransactions.
Infinite Flight Simulator
The humble flight sim is one of PC gaming’s finest traditions, and it’s now arrived on your iOS (or iPadOS) device. There’s almost too much to do here to list, and pretty much everything you expect from a flight sim you’ll get here. Sure, it’s a bit overwhelming at first, but flying a plane isn’t easy, and neither is Infinite Flight Simulator . You can also fly in multiplayer or play as a flight controller, though you’ll need to pay for a Pro subscription for that at the cost of $10 a month. Still, flying a basic plane is free, and it offers everything you need to know whether this is your jam or not.
Diablo Immortal
The game infamously revealed with the words “do you guys not have phones?” has finally launched, and despite the outcry, it’s actually pretty good. Diablo Immortal is here, and if you’re a fan of the Diablo games or anything similar, then you’re sure to love it. The genius here is that this isn’t some cheap mobile imitation — this is a fully-fledged Diablo game in all its glory, and that makes a serious difference. Alright, it’s rammed to the gills with microtransactions, but if you want to sample the game everyone is talking about, then you’ll just have to hold your nose.
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Star Wars is a huge franchise at the moment, thanks to Kenobi , so why not enjoy a great Star Wars game? Star Wars: TCS is a port of the 2007 Lego Star Wars game of the same name and has content from Star Wars I to Star Wars VI , so don’t expect anything from the sequel trilogy in this. But regardless of that, you get to play through the six mainline movies, starting in the Trade Federation negotiations and fighting your way through to the second Death Star above Endor. There are over 120 characters to play, and you’ll need to use other characters’ strengths to get all the secrets in every level. It’s free to start playing, with Episode I unlocked for free. Subsequent episodes will cost money, though you can buy the full game for $7.
Square Valley
Square Valley puts you in the shoes of the Spirit of Valley, whose purpose is to take a square of land and make it habitable for incoming villagers. You’ll need to place houses for them to live in, animals to farm, rivers for water, and trees for wood. The trick is that each portion of the land can only take certain tiles, so you’ll need to balance what you place where. It’s a fun and engaging concept, and one that should tickle puzzle lovers for hours. A bargain for just $2.
Medieval II: Total War
Older gamers will remember when games like Medieval II: Total War was new and technically demanding — and now, you can play them on your iPhone or iPad. It costs a princely sum of $15 to buy, but there’s a full PC game here, and one that’s been converted rather well. Play as one of 17 playable factions, and fight, scheme, and trade your way to building your empire. Like Rome: Total War , the battle gameplay takes a little getting used to, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s just as easy to use as on the PC.
PUBG Mobile
You might think of PUBG Mobile as being a buttoned-up, brown version of Fortnite ‘s colorful explosion, but that’s not the case. The fourth anniversary of PUBG Mobile ‘s brought with it a number of new features. There’s a vibrantly colorful theme, colorful bicycles, and an aerial battlefield mode that’s utterly bonkers and unlike anything else you’ve seen in a battle royale game. Other than that, you can still find the classic gameplay you love, along with 10-minute matches, and a massive range of aesthetic items to collect and wear.
ARK: Survival Evolved
What’s better than a survival game on your iPhone or iPad? A survival game on your iPhone or iPad with dinosaurs! ARK: Survival Evolved is now something of a classic of the survival genre, and it’s easy to see why it’s still around when so many other games have dropped off the radar. You’ll start the game by, well, surviving — but once you have that solid base in place, you can start to set your sights a little higher. Create a home all your own, and train, tame, and even ride over 80 different dinosaurs.
Fill the Fridge!
There are few games so easily described by their title but Fill the Fridge! is exactly what it sounds like. Fill your fridge with delicious goodies that are currently not in your fridge. Weirdly, dragging your finger along to place goods becomes quite compulsive and fun, and, if you’re anything like us, you’ll find yourself playing for far longer than you’d originally intended. It starts out simply, but levels soon become fiendishly difficult and require some quite precise button presses to accomplish.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links
Sitting alongside Pokémon as the childhood game of choice for many people, Yu-Gi-Oh can now be enjoyed on your iPhone or iPad. Duel Links has a strong tutorial in order to teach you the rules, so don’t worry if you’ve never played before, or are a little rusty. There are microtransactions, but they’re not required to progress, and you can get a lot of free cards from playing the in-game events. A good choice if you’re curious about playing a collectible card game, are an existing Yu-Gi-Oh player, or simply want to indulge in some nostalgia.
Mario Kart Tour
Who doesn’t love Mario and his happy band of friends and foes? Mario Kart Tour is the mobile version of the madly popular and decade-spanning Mario Kart series. It’s a simple formula — choose a character and race against other characters, whether A.I.-controlled or player-controlled — and aim to take first place. Win races, collect stars, and unlock new characters, karts, and badges. It’s free to play but has optional paid elements.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a 6.2-inch display on its cover and a massive 7.6-inch display when you open it, with both screens featuring Samsung's Dynamic AMOLED 2X tech and 120Hz refresh rates. Unlike its predecessors, the hinge design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 allows it to close completely flat, and it also features a thinner and lighter design that makes it much easier to use. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and it packs a camera system that's headline by a 50MP main camera.
It’s no surprise that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is Apple’s most feature-packed smartphone to date. It is important to note that even though the iPhone 15 Pro Max is both durable and lightweight, with its 6.7-inch screen and titanium casing, it can still get damaged during an accident and crack or shatter. To keep your newest iPhone in good condition, it is highly recommended that you invest in one or two protective cases to keep it safe and secure.
Fortunately, we have compiled a list of the 20 best iPhone 15 Pro Max cases that you can purchase right now. Take a look below; we are confident that you will find something that meets your needs.

5 Fun and Simple Browser Based HTML5 Games for iPhone / iOS
Gaming on the iPhone has exploded in the past few years, with titles available for just about any genre and at different price points. However, there are still a couple of aspects of
games on the iPhone
that can make them inconvenient.
First, some of the most interesting games are paid. And second, you still have to search for them and download them onto your iPhone even if all you want is a quick fix of fun.
Thankfully HTML5 exists, making it possible for any iPhone owner to access some nice games for free right from Safari or Chrome or any other browser for iOS. No downloads, no waiting times, no space taken from your iPhone’s memory and no paying for them.
Let’s take a look at five great HTML 5 games that you can play right from your browser and that are perfect for short spans of playtime while at the same time remaining fun and challenging.
And remember: Since you can play any of these games on your iPhone web browser, just view this page on your iPhone and tap the links to the games to start playing them right away.
Like math and quick thinking? Then Fun Math is for you. The idea behind the game is simple and straightforward: Touch the numbers needed to add up to the number shown above the rest. Once the numbers you tapped on add up to the other one, they will disappear from the screen and a new number will show up.
So far the game is already interesting. But besides being fun, it is also hectic, as you have to get rid of all the numbers on the screen before the timer runs out. And believe me, it literally runs!
Galaxy Knight
One of the flaws I find with shooters nowadays is that they tend to overcomplicate things. Huge bosses, heavily detailed levels and explosions everywhere. This is nice of course, but definitely not ideal if all you want is get into the game quick and enjoy it for a couple of minutes.
This is where Galaxy Knight comes in. This is as simple a shooter as it gets. Turn left and right and shoot. That’s all there is to it. And of course, try to reach the 500 score.
Another frantic game, Save Eggs also carries a very simple premise (as all the games in this list, naturally) that makes it ideal to play just about anywhere for a couple of minutes. In it, your main (and only) goal is to move your cart and save as many eggs as possible before they crash onto the ground.
The eggs fall quite fast though, so you’ll be hard pressed to survive even for a minute before your ten lives run out.
Tangled Words
If you like word games on the iPhone , then you will fill right at home with Tangled Words . The game’s simple mechanics (form words by sliding your finger across letters without lifting it) make it also ideal for short bursts of gameplay, while remaining tough enough to keep you busy for a while if you choose to.
Another perfect short burst of fun, Memory 3D is just that: A memory game that plays on a 3D cube instead of on the traditional 2D views we are used to. The cube is surprisingly responsive to your finger movements and awards you more points the faster you can match all the pairs of different figures.
There you go. Take any of these five games and save them on your bookmarks or, even better, just save them right to your iPhone’s home screen for easy access.

Facebook Gaming Now Available to iOS Users Through Web App Due to App Store Policy
Due to limitations surrounding the distribution of cloud gaming services on the App Store , Facebook is bringing its gaming service to iOS users through a progressive web app starting today, reports The Verge .
In a statement to The Verge , Facebook's vice president of gaming, Vivek Sharma, said that the company has come to the same conclusion as others, such as Microsoft, that bringing cloud games to iOS users through a web app is the only possible way. The vice president also criticized Apple's guidelines, saying it "defeats the purpose of cloud gaming."
"We've come to the same conclusion as others: web apps are the only option for streaming cloud games on iOS at the moment," Facebook's vice president of gaming, Vivek Sharma, told The Verge in a statement. "As many have pointed out, Apple's policy to 'allow' cloud games on the App Store doesn't allow for much at all. Apple's requirement for each cloud game to have its own page, go through review, and appear in search listings defeats the purpose of cloud gaming. These roadblocks mean players are prevented from discovering new games, playing cross-device, and accessing high-quality games instantly in native iOS apps — even for those who aren't using the latest and most expensive devices."
Earlier in June, Microsoft made Xbox Cloud Gaming available to iOS users through Safari . Compared to normal apps available to download through the App Store, web apps are severely limited in functionality, not being able to send user notifications, take advantage of a device's hardware, and are harder to find for users.

In Downwell, you play the character of a boy who does just that: ventures down a well with his trusty Gunboots for protection. There are a plethora of nasty creatures down there, and your Gunboots unleash a torrent of firepower on anything underneath them, so use them wisely! You can even upgrade the Gunboots with different weapons and items. All levels in Downwell are procedurally generated, so no run is the same as the ones before it. The Best iPhone Puzzle Games
Monument Valley 2
Monument Valley 2 is by far one of the most beautiful games you can play on iPhone. Players attempt to help a mother and her child travel through various locations by having them solve puzzles.
These puzzles pose a small challenge and are very unique since they work off of visual illusions. There are plenty of levels to get through to keep you engaged for a long time.
Help a mother and her child make their way through clever puzzles as you work to reach specific doorways in these surreal locations. The artwork is gorgeous and worth appreciating on its own.
Buy from: App Store
Candy Crush Saga
Few puzzle games are addicting as Candy Crush Saga . Players attempt to move candy pieces around on the screen in such a way as to clear as many rows and columns as possible. Lining up three of the same kind or more makes those same-colored candies disappear.
There are tens of thousands of levels to keep you entertained and the animations are so satisfying to watch that you'll be coming back again and again. You can also replay levels to improve your previous scores or use boosters to help you perform better.
Try to move candies in the proper locations to give yourself the most points. Challenges are different from level to level and will keep you entertained for hours.
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
If you've played the Witcher action RPGs or have watched The Witcher on Netflix, then you're probably already familiar with GWENT, a competitive card game that's popular in the Witcher universe. Thanks to this iPhone game, you can play it yourself, digitally.
It's free-to-play and has you face off against another player while laying down popular characters like Geralt, Siri, and Yennefer. You'll need to play strategically to win, but there's more than one way to get ahead.
GWENT: The Witcher Card Game
Play the card game that Geralt loves against others online. You'll need to think strategically and use the best cards in any situation to get ahead.
Donut County
If you like Katamari Damacy but are looking for a new story (something that makes a little more sense), check out Donut County. It's all about rascally raccoons and their insatiable need to collect garbage (and anything else they can get their hands on). As you visit poor, unsuspecting residents of Donut Country, you'll suck up everything they own into your bottomless hole. Some items, when combined, will produce some pretty spectacular results.
Control a hole and suck up everything that stands in your way in this hilarious and wacky puzzle game.
Old Man's Journey
Old Man's Journey is a point-and-click adventure game from the indie game studio known as Broken Rules, and it's one of my favorite games to hit the App Store.
While I don't want to dive too deep into what the game is all about, thus robbing you of the experience it provides, I can tell you that this game is amazing visually. The hand-drawn picturesque graphics are absolutely stunning, and the small details that the developers put into every character, animal, and object that pops up on the screen shows that they poured their heart and soul into the game.
The other standout feature of Old Man's Journey is the storytelling. The beautiful narrative is crafted in such a way that the protagonist doesn't even talk throughout the whole game, and you still come away at the end feeling some profound emotions.
Old Man's Journey is a beautiful game about soul-searching. It features stunning art and an emotional story that anyone can appreciate.
If you're a fan of World of Warcraft, you very well may enjoy this card battle game with heroes and magic from the Warcraft world. Build a digital deck and go into PvP battle to see who has the stronger cards and can plan the best strategy. The order you choose to play the hand you're dealt can be a make or break decision. There's also an RPG mode where you combat opponents with your Mercenaries to upgrade your units.
While this game is a free download, it is worth noting that you may need to spend money for it to be enjoyable. There are card packs available, and occasionally you'll earn one in game. But the quickest way to build a decent deck is to purchase them. But it's free to begin as any of the ten hero classes!
Hearthstone
Build up your deck of 30 World of Warcraft based cards and plan your strategy in PvP card combat. Or, in the new RPG mode, choose six Mercenaries and go through combat to earn upgrades for your team.
The Best iPhone Strategy Games
Anomaly 2 brings the same reverse-tower-defense mechanics as the original, but the updated graphics, new transforming tanks, and multiplayer mode make this sequel more than adequate. If you're looking for loads of tactical depth and eye candy to boot, Anomaly 2 delivers.

Autumn Dynasty Warlords
Autumn Dynasty Warlords is a finger-friendly real-time strategy and turn-based empire management game set in feudal China. Players direct a varied force across a wide range of terrain types in a single-player campaign or skirmish mode. Commands are made with a variety of gestures, each leaving a stylish calligraphic trail (though standard button input is included for more traditional control). Between matches you'll deal with some light persistent base-building and territory control, complete with espionage and diplomacy.
Autumn Dynasty Warlords is the best traditional real-time strategy game you'll find on mobile, and a fine empire-builder to boot.

Eufloria is a deceptively calming, abstract strategy game where players have to send swarms of spores between asteroids to germinate them and produce resource-bearing trees. This gets tricky once you encounter other life forms that are aiming to do the same. There are 25 levels in story mode, plus one-off skirmish modes to keep the fun coming after that. Levels are procedurally generated, so no two matches will be the same. If you'd like something more laid back, there's a relaxed mode, while the dark matter mode makes things considerably more challenging.
Though the music is bound to make you nod off at least a little, stay on your toes - Eufloria requires careful planning and attention throughout.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers
Kingdom Rush Frontiers brings the acclaimed tower defense game to the next level. In addition to the same goofy, frantic fantasy tower defense that you remember from the first Kingdom Rush, there are a whole slew of new heroes to pick from, each with their own special abilities that you can upgrade as you progress through the single-player campaign. Of course, there are also a ton of new towers, enemies, and bosses to explore across a wide range of difficulty ratings.
Though Kingdom Rush Frontiers can be extremely challenging, its lighthearted take on tower defense keeps you coming back for more.
Plants vs. Zombies 2
Plants vs. Zombies is a venerable iOS franchise for a good reason. The bizarre premise of protecting your back lawn from hordes of undead with sunflowers is certainly part of that, but there's a lot of tactical thinking in terms of plant choices before the attack begins, and placement. In Plants vs. Zombies 2, you're taken back in time to defend against zombies dressed in era garb, and try out all sorts of new mechanics. The zombies are getting smarter, and challenge your reaction speed in a number of ways, though you also have a whole new complement of plants to use. Stages also have new terrain features to keep every round fresh. Plant food can be collected to super-charge any plant when things get especially hairy.
All in all, Plants vs. Zombies 2 presents deep strategic gameplay in a fun, colorful package.

Rymdkapsel combines Tetris-style base building and real-time strategy resource management in a minimalist and finger-friendly package. Players have to build residences, feed the populace, and expand towards objectives, all while fending off wave after wave of progressively more difficult enemy air strikes. Rymdkapsel is decidedly unique in both its art and play style.
Rymkapsel prunes away all of the extras in real-time strategy games and leaves players with a clean, pure experience.

XCOM's mobile port keeps the addictiveness of the game's tactical combat in one piece. Players form an elite squad of secret soldiers attempting to defend humanity against an impending alien threat. Over the course of that mission, players recruit, equip, and improve squad members. Missions require careful consideration for who you take along - picking the wrong guy from the wrong job can mean a quick failure. In addition to the extensive single-player campaign, there's also online multiplayer so you can test your skills against friends online. Combined with the full-bodied base-building and research elements, XCOM has earned its venerable status across all platforms.
Hardened strategy fans shouldn't bat an eyelash at the pricetag; XCOM is worth every penny.

They then harvest the resource tiles nearby, expand their nation in science, culture, religion, and military, and achieve global dominance through warfare or diplomacy. Civilization Revolution 2 is the perfect game for keen micromanagers.

Players have to invest in research to improve their visibility and defenses, while also building up the needed stockpiles to destroy and conquer other nations around the planet. Resident evil village.
Though only available to play on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Resident Evil Village is the entire original game in surprisingly great quality, with in-depth graphical settings. It is, by far, the scariest game on this entire list, and probably the prettiest too. It is full price, making it one of the most expensive, but well worth that base cost.
If you do play it, you may want to pick up a controller with it as the touch controls are a bit cumbersome and slow , thanks to just how quickly the game moves. This isn't a toned-down version of the game, it is the real thing and it's finally here.
Resident Evil Village is an excellent experience on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max with great graphics, awesome scares and more. Just don't play it with touch controls.
Five Nights at Freddy's
Five Nights at Freddy's has become a large franchise in its own right, but the original jump-scare horror game is still considered by many to be the best entry in the series. Players take on the role of a person working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a party location for kids complete with animal animatronics.
The thing is, you're on night watch and the animatronics are actually out to sneak up on you and kill you while you're sitting in the security room. Fortunately, they can be stopped by monitoring various rooms on the camera, listening to noises, and closing the doors to your office when they approach. However, you have a limited amount of power so you need to play smart and conserve as much as possible. If you last five nights, you win the game. But it's harder than it sounds.
You're given the job of watching Freddy Fazbear's Pizza after dark. Turns out the robotic animals are active and looking to kill you. Can you keep an eye on the cameras and keep yourself safe?
Playdead's Inside
This is a deep and creative 2D platform adventure where a boy is somewhere he isn't supposed to be, and people are hunting him for it. There are a variety of puzzles to solve as you try to work your way out through this narrative. It is an indie title that is the winner of more than 100 awards from art, to story, to audio. It will keep you on edge and interested the whole way through.
In the app version of this, it is initially free. This means players can try out the beginning of the story and decide to purchase the full story if they're enjoying themselves. The moody style may not be for everyone but if it is for you, you're going to love every piece of this game.
Playdead's INSIDE
You wake up as a boy and you've discovered something you weren't meant to know about. You are inside an operation that is dangerous and people are looking for you. Can you make it out before they find you?

Genshin Impact
A gacha-based open-world RPG, Genshin Impact gives you the role of an interstellar traveler who, alongside their twin, has been trapped on the planet of Teyvat, a world full of gods and monsters. Build teams of four elementally aligned heroes to explore the world, defeat monsters, and uncover the mysteries of Teyvat's history.
This game is bright and colorful with a world comparable in scale to what we mention seeing in our The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild review , and much of this world has yet to be revealed, promising players many, many major updates before it can all be explored. This beautiful world is really enhanced on the beautiful screens of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro noted in our reviews. What really drives this game though is the cast of compelling and fully-voiced characters, each with their own complex history that weaves in and out of the main plot, as well as the histories of the other characters.
Genshin Impact already has over 150 hours of gameplay to complete despite only the first two nations being unlocked. Also available on Android, PC, and PlayStation, it also supports cross-platform play with fantastic multiplayer options, including frequent events which provide even more gameplay for those who've completed the currently available quests.
Explore a massive open world in this epic and beautiful RPG. Collect over 30 unique heroes with more being introduced often.
Seven years in and over a billion downloads, Pokémon GO remains one of the most popular mobile games of all time. Niantic and The Pokémon Company teamed up to combine all the fun and nostalgia of the classic Pokémon games with real-world data into a fun and addictive game that has continued to top the charts.
Playable from virtually anywhere in the world, your gameplay in Pokémon GO will change based on where you go. The locations for in-game activities are all based on real-world locations, like small shops, museums, and landmarks, inviting you to explore the world around you through a new lens. Even the time of day and weather in the real world can impact what Pokémon you encounter and how well your own Pokémon perform.
What has really driven the success of Pokémon GO (aside from the near-universal love of Pikachu and friends) is how well Niantic responds to the community. At the start of a global pandemic that ought to have made playing Pokémon GO extremely difficult, Niantic reformated much of the gameplay, including Pokémon GO Fest and Pokémon GO Community Day . Niantic really knocked it out of the park with this one!
Pokémon Go
Explore the real world with Pikachu, Mewtwo, and countless other Pokémon by your side. Catch, hatch, and battle them all to become a Pokémon Master!
Among Us is at its core a very simple game. Up to ten players are each given a handful of tasks to complete on their spaceship. However, at least one of the crew is an imposter, a monstrous alien set on killing the crew. If the imposter can kill the crew before the crew can agree on who they are (and eject them into space) they win. However, if the crew can oust the imposter(s) or complete their tasks before they're outnumbered, the crew wins. Kind of like a sci-fi game of Clue or Mafia.
The simplicity of this game is what makes it so fun. Each match takes less than 15 minutes, making it the perfect party game, but you can also play with random players from around the world.
Your crew has an important job to do as you explore space and alien planets, but be careful! There's an imposter among us! You definitely want to find them before they find you!
Pokemon Unite
We at iMore have put a ton of time into playing the Switch and iOS versions of Pokémon Unite . So much so that we know who the best playable Pokémon are regardless of what kind of device you're playing on.
The basic idea behind this simple MOBA, is to participate in team vs team battles where you can use your Pokémon's unique skills to defeat opponents, earn points, and then attempt to score them in the opposing team's goal. Roblox has often been compared to Minecraft and while the two do have some similarities they are also very different. This game allows players to create games and share them with others online.
It's also been around for a long time. Because of this, there are endless genres and discoveries to make, with new creations coming out daily. Spend hours perfecting your own games and then show them off to the world when they're ready.
Create your own worlds or check out the creations others have made in this sandbox game. You can even just find places to hang with friends if you want to.
Heads Up! has been one of the biggest pickup party games over the last few years. It's also great for entertaining when you're standing in line waiting to get into an event or restaurant. What's more, its simplicity makes it fun for people of all ages.
Similar to charades, the "it" player chooses a category, puts their iPhone against their forehead so other players can see the screen, and then takes clues from their friends and family until they can correctly guess what word is on the screen. You try to get as many correct as you can within a time limit before passing to the next person.
Hold your phone up to your forehead for others around you to see. Then have everyone else give you clues to figure out what the word is above your head. When time's up, pass to another player. Buy from: App Store

The Best iPhone RPG Games
Oceanhorn is the closest thing to a real Zelda game you can play on your iPhone right now, and it's one of the best iPhone games out there. Although Ocheanhorn is years old, it remains one of the best games to play on your iPhone, especially now that it's optimized for the iPhone 11 line and beyond.
With colorful graphics, a fun combat style, and challenging puzzles, this adventure RPG feels like a console title. When you're playing it with an MFi game controller, it's easy to forget you're even playing a mobile game — it's that good.
It's got a pretty lengthy story, meaning it will keep you entertained for hours on end. Plus, it's a universal app, meaning you can play this title on the big screen with an Apple TV , which is something I highly suggest.
Oceanhorn is like having Zelda on Apple devices. Embark on a colorful and challenging journey filled with challenging enemies and puzzles that really make you think.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis was one of the first games I played on my brand new iPhone 15 Pro Max, thanks to its impeccable visuals and fantastic audio. I wanted something to show off all that power and it delivered with a wonderful atmosphere, great storytelling, and fun side activities.
It does come with the sometimes frustrating gameplay design of a modern online free-to-play title, complete with an energy system that holds back your progress more and more as you play, encouraging you to pay your way to the top. Despite this, it's still an excellent title, entirely free if you have some patience and a faithful retelling of the classic Final Fantasy VII story.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is a charming, gorgeous, and fun free-to-play title that manages to shine, despite some annoying monetization practices.
The Best iPhone Simulation Games
Minecraft is the number one best-selling video game of all time by far. It's no wonder that it's been such an ongoing hit even though it released so long ago. Players can do just about anything they want. You can go harvesting for materials, build structures, go exploring, craft armor, and much more.
Some people like to create massive mansions complete with their own areas to grow crops and house livestock. Others focus on traveling as far as they can to see what is on the horizon. If you're more of a person who likes a conclusive challenge, you can also work on taking on the game's terrifying boss, the Ender Dragon.
Do whatever you want in this sandbox game. Will you gather materials and build your own place? Maybe plant crops? Go exploring as far as you can and take on enemies that come your way? The possibilities are endless.
Many consider Stardew Valley to be a far better life sim than Animal Crossing: New Horizons . The game starts off by explaining that you've inherited your grandfather's farm, but it needs a lot of work. You can slowly work on cleaning up the fields, improving your animal's housing, and exploring the town nearby.
One of the big things that Stardew Valley provides over Animal Crossing is the ability to help your character find love with one of the village NPCs and even have children with them. Create your own perfect digital world as you work and provide for your family.
Stardew Valley
It's up to you to restore your grandfather's farm to its former glory. Along with making improvements to the livestock and crops, you can meet the townsfolk and find someone to marry.
What do you get when you mix Tinder with the King of the fictional kingdom? The wonderfully sadistic choose-your-own-adventure game Reigns.
Reigns will crown you a king and then force you to make decisions by swiping left or right (thus my Tinder quip), that almost always lead to your untimely death in increasingly interesting ways. Doomed to repeat his life over and over while attempting to find a way to lift a curse, you'll have to balance the needs of your kingdom with those of the church, military, and your greed.
Your first playthrough will probably leave you a little dejected, but there is good news: You can do it all over again times infinity! There are also two spinoffs: Reigns: Her Majesty and Reigns: Game of Thrones, where you can be Queen instead of King, or play through various Game of Thrones' characters. They're all enjoyable, so take your pick!
Rule over the kingdom as king by making tough choices. How long will your rule last?
Reigns: Her Majesty
Reigns: Her Majesty has you ruling as a queen instead of a king. But you still have to make the tough decisions that come with ruling over a kingdom.
Reigns: Game of Thrones
Reigns: Game of Thrones allows you to play as various characters from Game of Thrones. Make choices and see how your rule plays out in the kingdoms of Westeros.
Motorsport Manager
Motorsport Manager has players keep a watchful eye on their pro drivers, monitor vehicle performance, conduct technology research, and take their team to the highest competitive echelons. Some quick thinking is required in the midst of races, where you'll need to arrange the pit crew and offer direction when weather or crashes throw an wrench into the works.
Even if you're not into professional racing, Motorsport Manager's level of detail will impress you.

Order Up!! To Go
Order Up!! To Go is a cooking and restaurant simulator that tests your time management skills. The gameplay is twofold. For one, you're working on building up the reputation and menu for your restaurant, always with an eye to the next establishment, so there's a fair bit of budgeting involved.
The cooking itself is very similar to the Cooking Mama series in that you cut tomatoes with downward swipes and flip burgers with curved swipes. What really keeps Order Up!! To Go fun is the variety of other mini-games and the great humor both in the writing and art style. Smaller nuances, like recognizing customers as they come in and using the appropriate spices adds even more depth to the frantic gameplay.
You earn silver coins through regular gameplay, which can be used to buy your ingredients, access new restaurants, and hire extra help, but you can speed up the process with premium gold coins acquired through in-app purchases.
The Sims FreePlay
The Sims FreePlay is a casual, fun sim game where players can build a home, forge relationships, and climb career ladders with a highly-customizable avatar. Players have to tend to their Sim's needs, such as hunger and fun, and in the process earn Lifestyle Points which can be spent on various items. You can also buy Lifestyle Points outright, if you're the impatient type.
The possibilities are extensive, including starting new romantic relationships, having pets, and eventually having kids. You can build up your own little community of Sims, and visit those of your friends.
For those looking for a laid-back, constructive, and long-term game, the Sim FreePlay will have you covered.
Goat Simulator
Goat Simulator bridges the gap between man and beast in ways never imagined possible. From the lifelike licking of other creatures and objects to ragdoll physics that cause models to spaz and clip randomly, it's no wonder you quickly lose yourself in goatness and, eventually, a profound identity crisis.
Play Goat Simulator. It will change your fundamental assumptions of humanity and goats.
Bridge Constructor Medieval
Building bridges in a game is more fun than you think it would be. It might have something to do with how those that cross your half-baked creations dive haplessly to their demise down a ravine. Despite the lemming-quality AI, Bridge Constructor Medieval offers a wide range of physics-based challenges. It builds on the original modern-themed Bridge Constructor by having barbarians attack key points in your bridge while your people try making it to the other side.
In-app purchases are employed to shortcut levels either with unlimited resources or a few hints. For what should be a pretty simple game, and could just as easily be completely 2D, there are rich 3D graphics at play here, along with a colorful storyline to justify all of this bridge-building.
For engineers-at-heart, Bridge Constructor Medieval is a ton of fun.

The Sandbox
The Sandbox is clever mix-and-match game with an 8-bit art style. You take the role of an almighty creator trying to combine various elements in the right order at the right spot in order to complete a puzzle. Those goals can be as simple as evaporating water and as elaborate as discovering electricity. In that sense, there's a definite Doodle God vibe, except The Sandbox is a much more fluid.
Beyond painting element-infused pixels, you also have control over a wide variety of environmental elements, including temperature and weather. The real magic of The Sandbox is that elements all behave as you expect them to - trees catch fire if you turn up the world temperature, dirt falls when you paint it in the sky, and electricity surges through metal and shoots off the ends of wires with sparks. Given, all of that action is in chunky pixels, it's still all very believable. Outside of the puzzles, you can also go freestyle to make your own creations and share them online in the growing pixel art gallery.
Though The Sandbox is free, new elements are unlocked with mana points, which are awarded as you play through missions or bought through in-app purchases. Mana points can also be used to purchase hints for particularly tricky puzzles - luckily the hints aren't too expensive.
Transport Tycoon
Transport Tycoon is a classic business simulation game. Players build sprawling networks by road, rail, sea, and air. Maximize profits in order to expand your infrastructure. 150 vehicle types are available for use across 49 scenarios, provided you can assert your mastery over the terrain to put down the necessary framework. Business savy will be equired to edge out competing transportation companies.
Budding civil engineers will have a field day with Transport Tycoon.
Godus is a casual god sim game with classic mobile city-building mechanics. Players need to guide a fledgling population through the hoops of an evolving civilization, including new housing, developing relationships with one another, and all-out war with neighbours. The usual freemium tropes are present, such as limited faith points which are gathered from the dwellings of worshippers periodically and spent on most deific tasks, including basic terraforming. The pared-down, textureless art style allows vibrant animation with lots of personality shine through.
If you're looking for something like Clash of Clans or Farmville with a touch of visual class, Godus will serve you well.
The Best iPhone Shooter Games
Few multiplayer games have the online fanbase that Call of Duty Mobile does. Each day, millions of players drop into realistic locations in a battle royal where teams duke it out to score more points before the timer runs out. Anyone can play, but it takes strategy and skill to really master the game.
The game is free-to-play but does offer optional in-game transactions. You do not have to make any purchases in order to enjoy and play through the base game. However, certain skins and weapons can only be purchased with real-world money.
Call of Duty Mobile
Prove your skills against millions of other players online with this popular shooter. Drop into a battle royale and attempt to be the team with the most points within a time period.
Into the Dead 2
Armed with a handgun, a walkie-talkie, and a strong desire to return home, you play as James, who starts running through hordes of zombies. While it may be a pretty simple story, the voice acting is surprisingly well done, and as I have been playing through the story, I find myself invested in getting James back to his family.
The addition of a story mode and a more prominent in-game progression scale has given the shoot-em-up zombie runner a breath of fresh air, making it a delight to play. The visuals and sound are absolutely outstanding, and the game does an excellent job of really setting a tense and spooky tone. All in all, Into the Dead 2 is a fantastic experience, and whether you're a fan of the prequel or new to the game, you should be able to enjoy this one for hours on end.
Shoot your way through a horde of zombies to save your family. Gameplay overall hasn't changed much from the first game, which is more of a blessing than a curse. Avoid getting eaten alive by tapping on the screen to shoot your equipped weapon.

Kitty Death Room
Kitty Death Room tasks a cute little moggie with uncovering the secrets of a mysterious tower – which happens to be full of deadly traps. Fortunately, the cat can munch green pills dotted about and then expel ghost-like versions of itself that subsequently act as solid platforms.
Figuring out where to place these spectral stepping stones is often key to accessing hard-to-reach areas, including each level’s goal.
There’s a lot going on in the game, from brain-thumping route-finding to tense boss areas. There’s an underlying current of eeriness tinged with melancholy too, not least when the cat converses with other figures in the tower. In all, it’s an excellent install, whether you choose to breathe in the atmosphere or just blaze through every area in speedrun fashion.

The best free arcade games for iPhone
Our favorite free iPhone arcade games, including brawlers and fighting games, auto-runners, party games, pinball, and retro classics.
That’s a cow
That’s a cow amounts to a bovine-oriented level-based take on classic one-thumb leapy game Canabalt. Cowabalt, if you will. But rather than tapping to make the mooing protagonist jump over gaps in the landscape, you drag a finger to have the star pump out a seemingly endless supply of milk. Along with plastering the scenery and dealing with enemies, this dairy delight acts as your means of propulsion.
Levels are short, but that doesn’t mean getting to the end is easy. The controls take a while to grasp, and each of the brief tests is full of hazards to avoid, foes to deal with, and coins and other bonuses to collect. It’s all extremely silly and rather charming. And if you do well, you get the chance to pluck a new cow from an amoosing toy machine mini game.
Catchee is a happy musical catching game where Catchables scroll down from the top of the screen and you scoop them up in a bowl. Well, at least in theory. Once it gets going, this is the kind of breakneck arcade test that will leave your heart thumping when you reach the end of a song without all your Catchables ending up a splattered mess on the floor.
Fortunately, it’s not random. There are patterns you can learn and tricks to perform – have a Catchable bounce on the edge of the bowl and then scoop it up and you ramp up your points – and your energy meter. It’s exhilarating stuff. And although the game shows everything it’s about within the first few minutes, like the best arcade tests it only gets better with repeat play.
Froglike: The Frog Roguelike
Froglike: The Frog Roguelike rethinks Frogger for the modern mobile era. Rather than tasking an amphibian with crossing a road and a river, everything’s a bit more ambitious here. You must keep the Lily of Time alive, in order to stop the end of time itself. Yikes!
What this means in gameplay terms is jumping around lily pads and ideally parking your froggy butt on the biggest lily, to charge it up until a portal appears. You can then choose a power-up before returning to the fray. The entire game is quite a brawl, featuring all kinds of enemies keen to send you plunging into the deadly drink surrounding the lilies.
With responsive controls, vibrant visuals and in-game upgrades, this top-notch high-score chaser radically improves on the decades-old classic that served as its inspiration.
Zombie Football
Zombie Football is a deranged mash-up of exciting touchdown runs, The Walking Dead, and classic coin-op Gauntlet. In each level, the traditional green football field is peppered with obstacles, and hordes of lurching, ravenous undead. Clearly, the ratings needed a nudge.
Your aim in this free iPhone game is to not get horribly killed. You must figure out how to coax zombies this way and that (thereby clearing a path for your touchdown), avoid speed-sapping mud, and grab energy-boosting food that’s lying around. (Don’t think too much about the hygiene ramifications.)
It’s an entertainingly daft blast, not least when you realize your burly footballer can’t even stomp through cones, and so must gingerly thread his way through the gnashing, toothy opposition. Also, there are no ads, timers, or other cruft – free really does mean free here.
Yokai Dungeon
Yokai Dungeon is a fast-paced arcade title that involves running about and squashing demons. It’s set in a series of linked arenas, which are peppered with movable objects you can use to unsportingly squash your adversaries against a wall.
The Japanese-themed game looks superb, whether you’re moseying to the between-stages shop or taking on one of the large bosses in an end of stage battle. Most importantly, it plays really well, with fluid and intuitive controls.
With its grid-like structure and non-stop action, old hands might detect a hint of Bomberman; veterans will find Pengo coming to mind. But despite such retro inspiration, and the old-school pixel art, Yokai Dungeon feels every bit the modern iPhone title, with a sleek design, bite-sized battles, and approachable gameplay that’s suited to newcomers and seasoned gamers alike.
Knight Brawl
Knight Brawl takes the amusingly bouncy physics and frenetic skirmishes from Colin Lane’s mobile sports gems – Dunkers 2 ; Touchdowners ; Rowdy Wrestling – and applies them to knights who fancy getting a bit stabby.
Your knights leap about the place in a somewhat controllable manner. With deft button taps – and a little luck – you can quickly relieve opponents of helmets and shields, prior to delivering the killing blow.
Only that’s barely scratching the surface, because Knight Brawl is absurdly generous with what you get. There are multiple battle modes and also quest-like missions, where you get to leap into a castle and duff everyone up. It’s bonkers, entertaining, superb stuff, and seriously raises the bar on Lane’s work – which was already impressive to start with.
Project Loading
Project Loading is a speedrun arcade test about the adventures of a loading bar on its way to reach 100%. Yes, you read that right: the star here is the bane of many computer users’ existence – a loading bar.
In Project Loading’s universe, though, loading bars don’t slowly inch from left to right – they must cope with slow-down and speed-up mats, deadly giant crosses and bouncers. To aid their way, there are restart points, and gold stars to collect, but everything happens against the clock. There’s no dawdling for loading bars here.
It’s an interesting conceit, lifted by clever level design, arty visuals, and responsive tilt controls. However, given how tricky later stages are, you’ll likely never gripe about a standard loading bar again.
Boost Buddies
Boost Buddies is a twitch-based arcade effort, where you’re a cat in a box, trying to reach a crown. Fortunately for the cat, the box is rocket-powered, boosted every time you tap. Less fortunately, between the cat and the crown are… things.
Sometimes you’re pitted against massive laser beams or swinging axes. Occasionally you’re blown about by fans, or chased by critters. Quite what’s going on, we’ve no idea, but it’s a lot of fun figuring out how to beat each test, and stringing together high scores.
Do well enough and you can add to your menagerie of boosting beasts, each of which get their own music and background visuals. And while the game’s basic nature means sessions don’t last an age, it’s always good for giving you a quick boost yourself.
Williams Pinball
Williams Pinball recreates – and augments – a range of classic Williams tables on your iPhone. It then bakes them into a freemium business model that’s, perhaps surprisingly, actually pretty good.
Select a starter table, and that one’s unlocked from the get-go. You’ll be playing this one a lot , so choose wisely. (The superb Attack From Mars is a good bet.) You then partake in daily challenges to boost your XP, win parts, and unlock other tables.
Eventually, tables are unlocked for offline play, and optionally have animated components, like Zen Pinball’s more fantastical tables. Getting there is a grind, but you’re playing superbly simulated pinball, so that’s no great hardship. And even though pinball is admittedly a bit fiddly on the iPhone, any progress made is instantly zipped across all your devices via iCloud .
Unicycle Giraffe
Unicycle Giraffe is a balancing game that features a unicycle and a giraffe. Unfortunately for the giraffe, it attempts to ride said unicycle – not a comfortable state of being for the typical ungulate. It’s all very comical, though, as your giraffe wobbles left and right, before seconds later inevitably crashing to the floor in a tangle of legs and neck.
Despite being a one-note game, Unicycle Giraffe rewards mastery with the sheer thrill of staying seated for a few precious extra seconds. Rescuing yourself from very nearly overbalancing is fun, and extra risk comes by way of coins and bombs to tap elsewhere on the screen.
There’s little longevity, of course (short of ‘upgrading’ the animal with new hats and skins), but this one’s endearing, and always good for a quick blast.
Don’t Trip
Don’t Trip has you direct stompy feet through increasingly surreal terrain. You start off in a kitchen that could do with a tidy-up. Last long enough and you find yourself avoiding crazed vacuum cleaners decked out with knives and axes. Eventually, you end up fleeing from lava, splashing in swimming pools and walking in space.
This all comes off as quite trippy, and that’s only exacerbated by the viewpoint and controls. Everything is zoomed in to the point you can barely see where to head, and the controls have you press the screen to plant a foot, and rotate your phone to find space for the next step. Don’t Trip! really is a game very much designed with mobile in mind – and it’s all the better for it.
Train Party
Train Party is an arcade-oriented puzzle game designed for multiple people to play together. Between two and 12 people on the same Wi-Fi network do their best to keep the train on time, largely by laying down tracks in front of it. In order to avoid disastrous derailment, you must also figure out how to deal with roaming wildlife and a renegade track bomber.
There are two ways to play: collaboratively and competitively. In the former case, the train always heads to the player with the most complete track, so you can keep going for as long as possible. In competition mode, though, the train goes around devices in order, and the winner is the last person not to turn the 9:45 to Washington Union Station into a crumpled heap of twisted metal.

11 great games to play on iPhone
From pokémon unite to desta, if you have an iphone, we’ve got recommendations.
Mobile games are great, and billions of people play them. To meet that demand, game developers — ranging from triple-A publishers to one-person teams — have pumped out an enormous number of games, far too many titles to sort through on your own.
Let us help. Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best games on offer on the iPhone in alphabetical order, along with a short explanation of what we like about each game. We’ve skipped some obvious entries (think Pokémon Go or Genshin Impact) and some games we’ve covered already, like Wordle (which you can play on The New York Times app) or Knotwords . We’ll also focus exclusively on the iPhone here — rather than all mobile devices — because some of the games listed below are available exclusively through Apple Arcade, the phonemaker’s subscription video game service .
We’ll keep updating this list as more great iPhone games come onto our radar. Netflix recently entered the mobile gaming space and has promised subscribers three mobile titles from Ubisoft, including an Assassin’s Creed game , sometime in 2023. Other console and PC game publishers have started developing titles for mobile as well to resounding success (and, less frequently, to wild controversy ).
If you’re already an iPhone gamer, or are just interested in what games are worth your time, we’ve got recommendations. And for even more recommendations, you can read our lists of the best games of 2022 so far .
Forget next-gen consoles. The biggest gaming platform is already in your pocket.
Card of Darkness
Card of Darkness is a deceptively difficult card game from designer Zach Gage (who made the Wordle-like puzzle game Knotwords ) and “Adventure Time” creator Pendleton Ward. Available through Apple Arcade, Card of Darkness tasks players with cutting a path across a grid-based game board populated by decks of cards. To make it to the exit, players need to exhaust the decks in front of them by either picking up all the item cards, which include weapons and potions, or fighting the cards in the pile that represent deadly enemies. Once you’ve picked up a card from a deck, you have to defeat the whole deck, which can lead to some complicated choices: Do I pick up a much-needed sword or health potion at the top of the deck, knowing I may be opening myself up to several enemy cards underneath?
If you have Apple Arcade, or like card and number games and have been thinking about trying the subscription service, Card of Darkness is a great brainteaser.
Desta: The Memories Between
Desta: The Memories Between is a roguelike tactics game in which you play dodgeball against dream versions of people you have unsettled business with from your hometown. The minute-to-minute gameplay is great — think “Hades” meets XCOM — and the narrative beats and character work are a joy as well. The game touches on working through complicated emotions and having difficult conversations with loved ones and friends without its tone ever sinking into misery.
One more thing: You’ll need a Netflix subscription to play Desta, but if you already have that, it’s totally free. Just download the game through the App Store, or launch the title by searching for it in the Netflix mobile app.
Dicey Dungeons
Dicey Dungeons isn’t just a great mobile game — it’s a great game full stop. Released first for PC and consoles, Dicey Dungeons throws players into a gantlet of Pokémon-style battles in which the moves available to you are determined by dice rolls. That may sound chaotic, but as the game unfolds and you pick up certain weapons and new moves, the move-by-move action feels more calculated than random.
Once you “get” the game’s underlying mechanics, the additional characters you unlock after successful runs subvert and complicate what you’ve already learned. That ramping up of the challenge makes the title a truly lasting addition to any mobile gaming catalogue.
Love You to Bits
Love You to Bits is a cute point-and-click game where you reassemble the pieces of your robot girlfriend by solving puzzles on different planets. You play as Kosmo, a tiny human scouring the universe for missing parts and trinkets. It’s an atmospheric, feel-good game with a heartwarming story that can easily be completed in a few sittings.
Mario Kart Tour
Want Mario Kart on the go? Well, you could get the Nintendo Switch’s best-selling game ever, “Mario Kart 8.” Or you could opt for Mario Kart Tour, the series port for mobile devices. Mario Kart Tour is pretty much what it says on the tin: Mario Kart for your phone. Race and play challenge courses on unique maps in this adaptation of Nintendo’s arcade racer for small screens.
Maps from Mario Kart Tour have also made it into the marquee edition of the game on Switch. If you’ve mastered “Mario Kart 8’s” New York Minute track, for example, the leap to mobile should be no problem for you. And if you want more Mario on your iPhone, you can play Mario Run , a side-scrolling auto-runner in which you control the timing of Mario’s jumps to get him across each stage.
These are the best games to play on Nintendo Switch
Marvel Snap
“Marvel Snap” is a simple card game that excels because each bout lasts just a few minutes. Build a deck of cards — each styled after a Marvel superhero or villain, and boasting special abilities that change how the game plays out — and place them on a board in one of three locations. If, at the end of six rounds, the power levels of your cards in two of three locations add up to be greater than your opponents’, you win. All of this happens delightfully quickly, making the game a perfect way to fill an idle moment.
“We came up with the idea for ‘Marvel Snap’ pretty quickly. In fact, it was so fun so fast, we actually put it on pause and said, ‘Look, we’ve got to explore some other stuff. We can’t have this good of an idea this quickly,’ ” Ben Brode, the founder of the studio behind “Marvel Snap,” told The Washington Post.
But they did, as the hours we’ve lost to this game since it came out prove.

Pokémon Unite
Pokémon Unite may look like a “League of Legends” clone — and that’s because it is, right down to the team-vs-team format and top-middle-bottom lane map structure. But Unite has two differentiating factors in its corner that can serve as a draw for prospective fans of the MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) genre: a massive Pokémon roster to draw from, and a simplification of the core format.
The mobile version of the game switches around the placement of the Nintendo Switch version’s UI, but due to the game’s intrinsically simple controls, nothing feels lost in translation. This game is a fantastic entry point to more advanced MOBAs like “League,” and the range of Pokémon and movesets on offer is sure to get players returning again and again.
We have 11 tips to help you master Pokémon Unite
Solitairica
Solitairica is a card battler with roguelike role-playing game mechanics that does the impossible: It actually makes Solitaire fun. The upgradable class decks, item system and ingenious gameplay loop all make for an absurdly addicting game.
There’s also a storyline about defeating the evil Emperor Stuck (the true enemy of all puzzle gamers) if you’re into that sort of thing. This game has mastered the “just one more match” formula, so play with caution. It’s hard to get tired of Solitairica, but that also means it’s hard to put down.
Though this list includes a real Mario game, Soosiz may be the closest thing here to a mainline Mario platformer.
Originally released for the iPod Touch, Soosiz is about a little orb guy trekking across levels to save smaller orb guys while avoiding environmental obstacles and enemies. But there’s a twist: Levels are made up of little planets, each with their own gravity. Once you master the physics of the game, you can make wild leaps to cut across maps or avoid enemies, slingshotting yourself across the world.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to describe Soosiz as a 2D “Super Mario Galaxy” — in terms of the core planet-hopping premise, but also due to the high quality of the mobile game. If you haven’t played it yet, give it a whirl.
Remember 2048, the 2014 viral sensation that The Post called “nerdy, minimalist, [and] frustrating?” Meet Threes, the game’s better-designed predecessor.
In Threes (as in 2048), you swipe tiles up, down and side to side to combine equal number tiles and try to reach the highest possible number without the board filling up. But in just about every respect, Threes is better than 2048. It doesn’t have any ads. It’s easier to control, with tiles moving one space at a time, and a preview bar at the top telling you what kind of tile is coming next to help you think through your runs. It’s also just plain charming, with little faces adorning some of the tiles you slide around the four-by-four play space.
If you like puzzle games you can play in short sittings, Threes is perfect.
Two Dots is a charming puzzle game that revolves around connecting dots of the same color. Across hundreds of stages, new mechanics and items complicate the ways in which players are able to complete challenges. The game’s slowly ramping difficulty is great fun.
Start this game at your own peril, though. Levels don’t take long, and it’s easy to get obsessed and lose hours to Two Dots. “I think that [addicting is] a very accurate description and I think … it’s true to Two Dots,” David Hohusen, former game director on Two Dots, told WNYC in 2016 . “We’re building experiences that really hook users and create this sense and this desire to play all the time.”
If you have an addictive personality, maybe skip this one.

Just keep an eye out for the animatronics through the security cameras... and try to survive five nights. You can see our guide to playing the FNAF games in order for more info.

3. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 ($3)
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 welcomes you back to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. You play as a new security guard working nights, and since the old security guard complained about the animatronics trying to break in, you've been given a Freddy Fazbear head to hide in just in case they come around. What could go wrong? Again, you'll strive to survive five nights against these animatronics.
4. Five Nights at Freddy's 4 ($3)
Stepping away from the role of a security guard, Five Nights at Freddy's 4 has you play as a young child instead who must survive the night in their room until 6am. From your bedroom, you'll need to run from door-to-door to keep an eye out for Freddy, Chica, Bonnie, and Foxy. They're not the only ones lurking in the shadows, though, so you'll have to keep your flashlight close.
5. Geometry Dash ($2)
Geometry Dash is a rhythm-based platformer where players control shapes to jump from point-A to point-B with unique soundtracks for each level. The game even features a level editor where you can create and share your own levels. The app is just $2 and doesn’t include any in-app purchases, so unlocking new icons and characters is completely based on your skills throughout the game.
6. Heads Up! ($2)
It’s the game “Who Am I?,” but for the digital age. Created by Ellen DeGeneres, Head Up! is charades with a twist. You place your iPhone (screen out) on your forehead, then a name or title appears on the display, your friends or family have to act out the clues, and then you have to guess the name of the character, movie title, animal, superhero, and more within 60 seconds. You can even play via Apple Facetime or Zoom. Not bad for just $2.
7. Ultimate Custom Night ($3)
Ultimate Custom Night is, as its title states, the ultimate way to customize a night in Five Nights at Freddy's. Trapped in an office once again, you'll be able to choose from 50 animatronic characters and mix and match them. You can even set their difficulty from 0-20, depending on how challenging you want it.
8. Bloons TD 6 ($7)
At $7, Bloons TD 6 is a top-down tower defense where players create defenses made up of hero monkeys, structures, towers, bridges, and traps to stop “Bloons,” balloon-like objects, from exiting each map. Players collect coins to upgrade their defenses.
9. Five Nights at Freddy's 3 ($3)
Set 30 years after Freddy Fazbear's Pizza closed, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 takes place in Fazbear's Fright: The Horror Attraction, where you'll take on the role of a security guard. However, it's not just security cameras you'll have to worry about, you'll also have to check on audio devices and ventilation through the Maintenance Panel. All of this while keeping just one very dangerous animatronic away...
10. Monopoly - Classic Board Game ($5)
Now play Monopoly with your Apple mobile device. This is the classic version of the board game with new graphics and fun animations in a fully immersive mobile experience. Roll the dice and travel around the board to buy up properties, build houses and hotels, collect Monopoly Money, and bankrupt friends and family.
You can even play as classic game pieces, including the scottie, cat, T-Rex, rubber duck, and others. And since this is the paid version at only $5, it’s ad-free with no interruptions or distracting pop-ups.
How to Choose Which iPhone Games to Play
There are millions upon millions of apps and games on the Apple App Store, so it might be intimidating to start with just one to play. While the most popular game lists—either free or paid—are a good place to start, there are some other factors you should consider before you tap download. Here’s what to look for in Apple iPhone games.
First of all, if you have a very old iPhone, you should check if it’s compatible with the mobile game. Most games require your iPhone to run, at least, iOS 8 or higher—which is compatible with the Apple iPhone 4S or higher. This iPhone model was released in October 2011, so any iPhone release beforehand will not be compatible with these games.
You should also be aware of how much space you have on your iPhone. The file size for mobile games can go from a few hundred megabytes all the way up to about 20GB, so if you don’t have enough space on your smartphone, then it won’t be able to download completely on your hardware. If that’s the case, you should consider deleting a few apps to free up some space, get a new iPhone with a larger storage capacity, or think about downloading a new game altogether.
Then, you should consider the price. While there are a lot of free games available, free doesn’t necessarily mean completely free. A lot of these free games offer in-app purchases for upgrades. For example, in the game Royal Match , you have a limited number of lives to play, once you lose a life, you have to wait 30 minutes to regain it. However, if you pay, you can unlock the app to get more lives.
Unfortunately, the same thing can be said for a paid game too. Just because you have to pay for an app at first, it doesn’t mean there aren’t additional in-app purchases available. But, if a mobile game is on the pricey side, then it’s likely that the unlocked version will download to your iPhone.
Additionally, you can also get a subscription to Apple Arcade for $5/mo. to unlock all of the iOS games available with no in-app purchases to play on iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple TV. If you’re an avid mobile gamer, then this is the way to go.
The final thing you should look out for in an Apple iPhone game is if it looks fun to play. If a game looks like a lot of fun or a challenge, then tap download and immerse yourself in a whole new universe and experience.

Troubleshooting, how to play iphone & ipad games on mac.
Have you ever wanted to play the iPhone or iPad games you own on your Mac? Perhaps, you just want to play one game of Among Us while you’re stuck at work? As long as you have a Mac that’s powered by Apple Silicon, you’re all set.
At this point, it’s no secret that the Apple ARM-powered Macs are capable of running iOS and iPadOS apps natively. What this means is that your favorite iPhone games are playable on your Mac too. Having said that, this particular functionality comes with a catch that we’ll talk about in a minute.
Read along as we’ll be guiding you on how to play your iPhone and iPad games on your M1/M2 Apple Silicon-powered Mac.
You’ll need to be sure that your Mac is using the same Apple ID as the iPhone or iPad that you play games on since it’s much more straightforward to download a game that you’ve purchased before. Here’s what you need to do:
There you go. Now, you know how easy it is to natively run iPhone and iPad games on a supported Mac.
If there’s an iPad version of an iPhone game that you purchased, your Mac will automatically download the iPad version since it would better suit the bigger screen.
Now, let’s talk about the catch, which might disappoint a lot of gamers. Unfortunately, you can only play games that show up in your Mac App Store. If you’re unable to find some of your iPhone or iPad games here, it’s likely that the app developer chose to not make the game available on Apple Silicon Macs. This applies to regular apps as well.
Some users managed to find a way to install just about any iOS/iPadOS app on M1 Macs by sideloading them with the help of a tool called iMazing Configurator . However, with the release of macOS Big Sur 11.3 onward, this functionality has been permanently blocked by Apple. You can still use the software to install developer-approved apps that you haven’t purchased before.
Hopefully, you were able to find the iPhone and iPad games that you play on the Mac App Store. If not, which game were you looking for? How many games are missing from your purchased list? Share your personal experiences with us and leave your valuable feedback on this feature down in the comments.

Thanks! -I’ve wondered how to do that. Tried it out & it was surprisingly smooth.
Unfortunately didn’t see Procreate on my list, but it probably would’ve been frustrating on a MBA M1 anyway.

How to close all your Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad at once
- Set a time frame (one day, one week, or one month) for Safari to automatically close tabs that are older, preventing tab clutter.
- Organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups. Create tab groups to categorize and easily find open web pages based on topics or interests.
- Close Safari tabs open on your Mac from your iPhone.
Safari on your iPhone tends to be a bit overzealous at opening new tabs, resulting in a web browser that's more crowded than a Taylor Swift concert. Thankfully, iOS and iPadOS make it possible to close all but one tab at once -- it's one of our favorite tricks for iPhone.
If robot vacuums can automatically clean your house, why shouldn't your phone automatically clean up tabs for you? The iPhone can automatically close tabs that are older than a week or a month, keeping your Safari tab count from creeping to embarrassing numbers. You only have to arrange your settings once, then Safari will do the cleanup for you, set it and forget it.
Best iPhone: Is the new iPhone 15 worth it?
Safari has a few other hidden organization features, like tab groups and even the ability to close your MacBook's open tabs from your iPhone. We're sharing our favorite tricks for keeping your Safari tabs under control, starting with how to close all tabs on your iPhone or iPad.
How to close all tabs on iPhone or iPad Safari
If you're like us, and you end up with multiple Safari tabs open, closing them all down individually can take a very long time. We had 246 open at one point.
If you have tabs you want to keep open, you'll still need to close all of your tabs individually, pin them, or you can save a bookmark and reopen them afterward. Another option is to move those favorite tabs to a new Tab Group, as this process only deletes the tabs in the group. If you want to clear out the Safari clutter, you can close all but one tab with just a few taps. Here's how:
- Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
- Tap the icon with two squares in the lower right corner to view all your open tabs.
- Optional: If you have any tabs that you want to keep open, press and hold on that tab and select Move to Tab Group , as this process only does one tab group at a time.
- Long press on the thumbnail for an open tab . Pro tip: Use a tab you would like to keep open, as this will be the only tab remaining at the end of the process.
- Tap on Close Other Tabs.
Alternatively, you can long-press the tab button in the bottom-right corner of Safari and then select Close All Tabs to quickly close everything that's open, including the tab you're currently viewing.
How to automatically close old Safari tabs on your iPhone
Whenever you open a link from another app, odds are it opens in Safari and creates yet another new tab, making it fairly easy for your tab count to grow without you even realizing it. But you don't have to go through and close all your tabs on a regular basis. Instead, you can have your iPhone automatically close old tabs after one day, one week, or one month.
This is a great option if you have a tendency to rack up open tabs quickly. If you turn on this feature, remember to use the bookmark tool or reading list to easily recall any important websites to revisit later, which tends to be easier than searching through your Safari history.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and select Safari.
- Under Tabs, find the Close Tabs option and tap on it -- it should be set to 'manually' by default.
- On the next screen, tap the time frame that you would like Safari to close old tabs after -- either one day, one week, or one month.
How to organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups
Maybe you like having 217 tabs open at once (I won't judge, I've been there) but you want to be able to find what you need a bit more easily. Safari allows you to use tab groups to organize your open web pages. For example, you could have a tab group for online shopping and another for housing your favorite news websites that you want to leave open to easily read every morning. Tab Groups allow you to organize your web browsing and are especially helpful if you have lots of tabs open at once.
- Open the Safari app on iPhone.
- Tap on the tab icon in the lower right corner -- it's the one with the two squares.
- Tap the menu icon at the bottom center.
- Select New Empty Tab Group or use the New Tab Group with # Tabs to create a group with the tabs already opened.
- Name the new tab group and tap Save.

How to close open safari tabs on your mac from your iphone.
If you have a MacBook or iPad signed onto the same Apple ID as your iPhone, when you open the Safari app, and you tap on the two squares in the bottom right corner, you will see a list of the pages open on your MacBook below those open on your iPhone. - Make sure that you have Safari enabled under the iCloud settings first . Head to the Settings App.
- Tap your name , then iCloud .
- In Apps using iCloud , make sure the Safari toggle is green .
- Open Safari on your iPhone.
- Tap the tabs icon.
- Tap the plus to open a new tab.
- Scroll down on the new tab until you see "From [Your MacBook's Name]."
- There are two ways to close out these tabs -- you can tap and hold the entry to close, then select close. Or, you can click "Show All" then swipe left and tap close.

The next iPhone update is almost upon us and looks like being the biggest mid-cycle update Apple has ever released. It includes new emoji , an easier way to check on battery lifespan , an update to the excellent Stolen Device Protection feature and big changes for EU users . There’s even a surprise update that will transform iMessages forever. And now, there’s one more thing, as they say.
Some apps, like FaceTime, use Reactions. How it works is about to change.
February 29 update below. This post was first published on February 28, 2024.
You may have spotted the new Reactions feature in video calling apps like FaceTime. Gesture with two thumbs up and fireworks will appear onscreen all around you. It’s very cool. But what if you don’t want these effects to appear?
Or if you didn’t know about them or they sneak up on you by surprise? As, for example, when Senator John Fetterman, on a video call with MSNBC , used his hands to simulate speech quotes. The software mistook this for two peace signs, triggering virtual confetti to cascade down on him.
This could happen to anyone in the most inappropriate circumstances, such as a heated argument, a private therapy session or, heaven forbid, a video call where a boss is laying off workers.
The problem, until now, has been that these Reactions are on by default. With iOS 17.4, that’s changing.
With the next iPhone update, and also with the next updates for iPadOS and macOS Sonoma, developers will be able to choose to turn these reactions off by default, so that it falls to them, or possibly the users, to turn them on again.
This is a big step forward, though to be honest, it would be good if thre was a nudge for users each time you logged into a call on FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet or whatever. After all, you might be delighted to have balloons appear on a call to your family, but mortified if you forgot to turn it off next time you were apologizing to your boss.
All the new joys of iOS 17.4 will be with us in just a matter of days, perhaps as soon as Monday, March 4 at 10 a.m. Pacific.
February 29 update. In-app payment options are among the most interesting changes coming with iOS 17.4, again for EU customers only—for now, at least.
It means that Apple will be opening payments to third-party banking and payment apps. This is a very big change because until now, the iPhone has only allowed Apple Pay.
As CNet points out, right now, the page you’ll see in the iPhone doesn’t look inviting. It says, “Apple introduced more ways to make in-app payments with the first iOS 17.4 beta. If you go to Settings > Privacy & Security , you'll see an option called Contactless & NFC , or near-field communication. If you tap the new option, you'll be taken to a mostly blank page that has a small disclaimer that says the page will show apps that have requested the ability to use contactless and NFC payments in the future.”
Apple explains it in more detail, like this: “Users based in the European Economic Area (EEA) with an iPhone running iOS 17.4 or later can initiate in-person payment transactions from a banking or wallet app at compatible NFC terminals or mobile devices that accept contactless payments. HCE apps, which are software-based solutions, can be more susceptible to attack vectors whereby payment transaction tokens and other sensitive financial data may be compromised, including through exposure to untrusted and potentially malicious entities.”
Apple says that to help protect privacy and security, “developers who want to build HCE payment capabilities into their banking or wallet app using these APIs will need to apply for the HCE Payments Entitlement. This ensures that only authorized app developers who meet certain industry and regulatory requirements, and commit to ongoing security and privacy standards can access these APIs.”
Personally, I’ve always found Apple Pay is an advanced and well-crafted option that I’ve come to trust. It’ll be interesting to see how many people want to switch to different payment systems.
