CMU basketball legend Dan Majerle makes his return to McGuirk

CMU alumnus and NBA All-Star Dan Majerle, will return to McGuirk Arena for the Western game at 7 p.m. Jan. 28. His son, Max Marjele, is a freshman on the men's squad.
Alongside an old tradition of the toilet paper toss returning to McGuirk Arena on Saturday, Central Michigan basketball's perhaps most-renowned player will join the mayhem.
Dan Majerle, the guard who played for CMU from 1984-1988, will be honored. His return to Mount Pleasant will take place during Saturday's game against rival Western Michigan.
Majerle was given the nickname “Thunder Dan” thanks to his prowess on the court. He was a part of a duo with guard Ervin Leavy who was known as the lightning to Majerle's thunder.

"He was an outside shooter in college, I was an inside player," Majerle said. "They kind of coined us the thunder and lightning.
"We were the thunder, lightning show and it just kind of stuck."
His jersey, No. 44, hangs in the lights of McGuirk and is one of seven numbers retired by CMU Athletics. However, Majerle's number was brought back down to action this year as it is now worn by his son, Max Majerle.
“When he called me and asked me if he could wear my number, I said it was totally up to him, but I couldn't be more (proud)," Majerle said. "And then to watch him play and see him get better every game and play hard. ... Any parents that watch their kids play, they want (them) to do really well.
"But like I said, I'm extremely proud of what he's doing and how hard he's working."
Freshman guard Max Majerle plays defense during a game against Eastern Illinois Sunday, Nov. 13 in McGuirk Arena.
The Majerle name runs deep throughout CMU. His brother Jeff Majerle played for CMU between 1987-1991, overlapping with Dan’s senior season.
In his four seasons as a Chippewa, Dan averaged 21.8 points per game, including a career-high 23.7 points in his senior season. He is second for CMU’s all-time single season point total and fifth all-time in scoring average. In each of his seasons, he led his team in scoring average.
"(It will be) great to be back in Mount Pleasant," Majerle said. "And spend a couple days there and be at the arena and just see everybody and kind of relive the past to see a lot of people that I haven't seen for a long time. So, I'm really looking forward to it, should be a fun weekend."
Among his list of achievements during his decorated career at CMU, Majerle was named to the All-MAC First Team between 1986-88 as well as Mid-American Conference tournament MVP in CMU’s 1986-87 MAC tournament championship.
Majerle’s final season at CMU was highlighted by being named the 1988 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.
After his time at CMU, Dan was drafted 14th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1988 NBA Draft. He played with the franchise for seven seasons between before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 7, 1995. In Phoenix, he shared the floor with former MVP Charles Barkley, who publicly voiced his displeasure with the trade.
Majerle's NBA career spanned over 14 seasons. In addition to Phoenix and Cleveland he spent time with the Miami Heat. He was a three-time NBA All-Star selection, as well as a two-time NBA All-Defensive Second-Team selection.
Majerle is one of three former CMU basketball players in the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame. He was also an inductee of the CMU Hall of Fame Class of 1998.

State hoops: Dan Majerle sees big future for CMU; tossing TP, WMU a good start
Dan Majerle has been here before, though it's been a minute.
Interestingly, he sees some similarities between when he arrived at Central Michigan in 1984, from Traverse City High School, to now with the Chippewas. His first two teams in Mount Pleasant were tough, amid a rebuild. Tony Barbee is in his second season as head coach at CMU, and things have been even tougher.
Majerle's third year, though, was special, with a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He can see a similar path for Barbee.
"I think they're on the right track," Majerle said over the phone this week, after attending Saturday's thrilling win over rival Western Michigan at McGuirk Arena. He also has a good idea what a good rebuild looks like, having taken over as head coach of Grand Canyon before its first season in Division I, and had the team knocking on the door of the NCAA Tournament three years in. (Majerle was fired in 2020, after his seventh season, and first losing season.) "It's a really, really young team, one of the youngest teams in Division I.
"When I got there back in 1984, we were pretty much a last-place team. We built it by the time I was a junior.
"Hopefully that's the same projection."
Central Michigan is just 8-14, 3-6 in the Mid-American Conference, after going 7-23, 6-12 in Barbee's first year — though CMU was the lone team from Michigan to advance to the MAC tournament in 2022.
There were higher hopes coming into this season, though there have been some significant growing pains, not helped at all by the extended absence of sophomore guard Kevin Miller, the team's leading scorer who hasn't played since Nov. 23.
Central Michigan has had to turn the team over to a freshman point guard, in Reggie Bass, and a senior guard, in Detroit Edison alum Brian Taylor. Those are the only two players to play all 22 games this season, and Taylor is the only one of the two to start all 22 games. The highlight of his season came Saturday, when before the largest crowd in McGuirk Arena history, 5,425, he drained a 3-pointer with less than 7 seconds left to complete a rousing comeback win over Western Michigan. WMU had led by 11 with 4:07 left, nine with 3:11 left.
It was the perfect ending to a perfect day in Mount Pleasant, where students were lined up outside more than an hour before tipoff, despite the snow — plenty ready for a rivalry, but also the return of Majerle (he can't remember the last game he attended), plus the return of the Toilet Paper Toss, made popular in the 1980s.
"McGuirk was rocking," athletic director Amy Folan said. "They're the best fans.
"Our student-athletes are tough, and our students are tough, too."
"They won this game," Barbee said of the Chippewas fans.
Saturday's win was the highlight of the season for Central Michigan, even though it beat Michigan at Crisler Center . This one, though, came at home, in front of a sellout crowd, which came to toss the toilet paper for tipoff, and stayed for the final shot, even though Central Michigan trailed for trailed for more than 39 minutes.
Junior guard Jesse Zarzuela, who's also missed time with injuries this season, led the way for the Chippewas with 25 points. Bass had 13. Taylor had eight, and was shooting just 28% on 3's before he made his biggest one.
The win, but more so the atmosphere, gave Central Michigan fans a glimpse of just how much fun things can be if Barbee gets things turned around.
Central Michigan hasn't had a winning season since 2018-19, and hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since 2003 — the second-longest drought in the state, ahead of only Eastern Michigan (1998). The last NCAA Tournament appearance before that was Majerle's, before he went on to a 14-year NBA career.
"They are having a tough year, major injuries, a lot of guys down, it's been hard," Majerle said. "But to have a fan base like that come in, hopefully that kind of gets this thing snowballing, gets the students back into it.
"It's always been a great college town. It always takes not only a good team, but the fans."
Majerle, 57, can't remember the last time he was at a Central Michigan game as a fan, before Saturday. He last was at a CMU game in November 2014, when his Grand Canyon team was playing the first of a home-and-home against the Chippewas. (CMU won, 79-77, then GCU won at home in 2015, 75-72). He was back in Mount Pleasant last year, helping move his son, Max, into his new digs.
Max Majerle is a freshman guard for Central Michigan, averaging 3.9 points and 2.3 rebounds. He has played in 21 games, and has started 10.
Max Majerle graduated from Arcadia High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he averaged nearly 14 points in a three-year career. He attended prep school at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. That's where he first caught Barbee's attention, and Barbee called him up. There was no going through Dan to get to Max. There wasn't much of a concern about Max being able to handle the pressure of following in the footsteps of his dad, whose No. 44 is retired by CMU, since he's basically been in the spotlight all his life, as the son of a three-time NBA All-Star who scored nearly 11,000 points and had more than 4,000 rebounds in his NBA career.
Max asked Dad what he thought, and Dan thought back to his time in Mount Pleasant and told his son he'd love it. Max committed without even visiting the Mount Pleasant campus.
Before Saturday's game, Dan got to throw a warmup pass to Max, who dunked it, just one of many highlights on a Saturday that, the Majerles and others hope, is a sign of things to come.
"You can tell their vision is really good," Dan Majerle said of the Central Michigan administration and Barbee, the former head coach at UTEP and Auburn, and who came to CMU after a long stint as an assistant at Kentucky.
"I tell Max all the time, 'You have a chance to help rebuild a program that has a great tradition.'
"It's been a great move for (Max). ... He's very happy being there."
∎In Mike Davis' first years as a head coach at Detroit Mercy, there has been one headache after another, most notably COVID-19 complications, but also injuries and other personnel matters. The Titans, despite a star player in the NCAA's second-leading all-time scorer Antoine Davis , have struggled to get all their best players on the floor at the same time, and that continues to be the case this year. This week came a big blow: Jayden Stone, a junior guard from Perth, Australia, is out for the season, after the NCAA this week denied his waiver request over an academic issue. He played 13 games for the Titans, averaging 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds, and developed a big-time chemistry with Davis, from there time living together in Davis' apartment over the summer.
∎Michigan State head women's coach Suzy Merchant was released from Sparrow Hospital in Lansing on Monday, two days after she was in a one-car accident following a medical episode. She missed Thursday's loss at Illinois, and it wasn't immediately clear if she will be with the team when it plays at Nebraska on Thursday. Dean Lockwood, in his fourth season as associate head coach, has been filling in during Merchant's absence.
∎Despite being held to 14 points in a loss to Oakland last month, Detroit Mercy's Davis still leads the nation, averaging 26.0 points. Davis is 335 points behind "Pistol" Pete Maravich for college basketball's all-time scoring record, meaning if Detroit Mercy plays the minimum amount of games the rest of the way (nine), he has to average 37.2 points. Twice this season, he's topped 40; there have been 20 other 40-point games in all of Division I.
∎The Oakland women have a special player coming up through the ranks in point guard Brooke Quarles-Daniels (it was just Brooke Daniels until a few weeks ago, when she decided to honor her grandfather), an ex-Macomb L'Anse Creuse North star who has been Horizon League freshman of the week five times, including the last three weeks. An Oakland recruit since she was in middle school, Daniels leads the team, averaging 12.0 points.
∎Central Michigan AD Folan on the state of the men's program under Barbee in Year 2: "We definitely like Coach Barbee's trajectory. We've got a lot of basketball to play, and he's taking things in the right direction. I'm looking forward to all the great things to come."
∎Eastern Michigan landed a fifth nationally televised game, with the Saturday, Feb. 18 game at Kent State moving to Friday, Feb. 17, so it can be on CBS Sports Network. You can credit sophomore Emoni Bates, a big draw averaging 20.3 points in Year 1 with the Eagles.

Former Suns star Dan Majerle files lawsuit against Grand Canyon after he was fired as coach
The phoenix basketball icon is striking back after he was fired from grand canyon in march.
Former Phoenix Suns star Dan Majerle is striking back at Grand Canyon University after the school fired him in March following his seventh season as the school's basketball coach. Majerle is suing for the money he is owed under his contract, his attorney told the Arizona Republic .
The lawsuit alleges in part that Grand Canyon has waged a "campaign to disparage Majerle as part of its effort to avoid its severance obligation" and is creating "false and pretextual reasons" for Majerle's firing, according to the report.
Grand Canyon released a statement to media outlets Tuesday saying the university is "prepared to defend itself and its decision if necessary should Coach Majerle decide to continue with litigation." The statement said the school learned of Majerle's lawsuit through media reports.
Majerle compiled a 136-89 and had a stretch of four straight 20-win seasons at GCU. But the Antelopes struggled to a 13-17 record this past season after being picked to finish second in the WAC by the league's coaches in a preseason poll. The university replaced Majerle with former Valparaiso and Vanderbilt coach Bryce Drew.
A three-time NBA All-Star, Majerle played seven of his 14 NBA seasons with the Suns and spent 2008-13 as a Suns assistant before taking the Grand Canyon job. Grand Canyon only become eligible for the WAC and NCAA Tournaments in 2018 as it completed its transition from Division II to Division I. It made the WAC Tournament final in 2018 and 2019, coming with a win of receiving a bid to the NCAA Tournament .

Dan Majerle
It’s been said that Dan Majerle was one of the hardest working guys to ever play in the NBA. And he’s instilled that same work ethic and hustle attitude into his business life as owner of Majerle’s Sports Grill.
Selected with the 14 th pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 1988 NBA Draft, Dan quickly became a fan favorite while playing eight seasons in Phoenix (1988-95, 2001-02). The 6-6 swingman, who was a member of the Suns 1993 Western Conference Championship squad, also played one season in Cleveland and five in Miami following his departure from the Suns via trade in 1995. Dan returned to Phoenix for the 2001-02 season where he sank his 800 th and final career three-pointer with 25.3 seconds remaining in the season finale on April 17, 2002 vs. Dallas.
“Thunder Dan” was inducted into the Suns’ Ring of Honor, the team’s highest honor, on March 9, 2003. At the ceremony, Suns Chairman Jerry Colangelo announced the creation of the Majerle Hustle Award, explaining, “When you think of Dan Majerle, you think of a guy who gave maximum effort in every game, every practice, in everything he did. It is this work ethic that inspired the creation of the award.” The Majerle Hustle Award is presented annually to the Suns player who most personified those attributes during the season.
Dan was a three-time All-Star (1992, ’93, ’95) who became the first reserve in NBA history to be voted an All-Star starter in 1995. The 14-year NBA veteran ranks among the league’s all-time leaders in three-pointers made and at the time held the NBA Finals record for most three-pointers made in a series (1993 vs Chicago).
Following his retirement as a player from the NBA, Dan stepped into the broadcast booth where he served as an analyst for Suns TV broadcasts as well as TNT, ESPN and ABC.
He then served as the associate head coach for the Suns from 2008 – 13 and head coach for Grand Canyon University where he led the men’s basketball program with an impressive 136-89 record over seven seasons.
Born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan, Dan starred for Traverse City High School and Central Michigan University where he played for four years and held the school record for most points in a season for 30 years.

How We'd Spec It: 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser in Its Cheaper Forms
We build our ideal versions of the revived off-roader, choosing between the 1958 and Land Cruiser trims but avoiding the expensive Launch Edition.
Joe Lorio's $58,745 Land Cruiser 1958
I went with the base 1958 trim because I wanted the round headlights but didn't want to pay $75K for a First Edition model. I added a roof rack ($1400!), which is not shown on the configurator tool as of now. There are no real options on the 1958 version, just accessories. The color choices for this version are grim: white, black, and silver. So, not much choice there. The blue and gold hues—the only non-grayscale colors offered in the whole lineup, in fact—are reserved for the top two trims. That's a pretty miserly selection, Toyota. – Joe Lorio
Joey Capparella's $66,094 Land Cruiser
I like the idea of a base-model Land Cruiser, but I prefer the look of the middle trim's rectangular headlights to the retro round headlights on the other two trims. The $350 two-tone Heritage Blue and Greyscape color combo is enough of a nod to the past for me, and I like how it contrasts with the brown interior. I chose the $1240 20-inch wheels for aesthetics alone, and the $850 sunroof for enjoying the outdoors. $309 for carpeted floor mats and a cargo mat rounded out my add-ons, bringing the total to just over $66,000. Not bad considering that the old model was more than $20,000 more dear, but I'm curious to drive the new model to see if it truly feels like a real Land Cruiser. – Joey Capparella
Dan Edmunds' $63,395 Land Cruiser
I’m going for a straight-up Land Cruiser. Why? I want to keep the price somewhat in check, but I’m steering clear of the 1958 because it lacks several important features I want—its 265/70R18 tires (33-inches, in old money) being the most obvious. I take my rigs off-road regularly, so I also covet the Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism (SDM) that proved to be very effective on my recent test of the Tacoma TRD Off-Road and the Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system of driver-configurable traction control. On a more practical note, the LC’s standard driver seat memory is a plus because my wife and I prefer very different seating, mirror, and steering-wheel positions. I’d also put the bigger 12.3-inch infotainment screen to good use because my favorite off-road nav apps can be displayed there via Apple CarPlay.
The First Edition has all that stuff of course, but I also expressly do not want many of its features, particularly the moonroof, but also certain elements of the Premium package. I’m not one that reflexively gravitates toward leather seats, either. This stuff is all optional on the Land Cruiser, so I can choose to do without. In fact, my Land Cruiser would have no options except for the $350 I’d spend on the Trail Dust two-tone paint treatment. I’m already on record as preferring actual colors to grayscale, but I also like the benefit implied by the name itself. Trail dust (and desert stripe, presumably) won’t show up as readily on this natural tone. My biggest regret: The Land Cruiser is the only trim that lacks the heritage-look round headlights. I do like those. – Dan Edmunds

Dan Majerle had a hilarious (golfy) strategy to try and slow Michael Jordan on the court
In the 1993 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan wanted to take on Phoenix Suns star shooter Dan Majerle. Why? Majerle wasn’t sure either, that is until he watched the sixth episode of “ The Last Dance .”
“I knew that [Bulls GM] Jerry Krause loved Dan Majerle and just because Krause liked him was enough for me,” Jordan said in the documentary. “You think he’s a great defensive player? OK, fine. I’m going to show you he’s not.”
“I was sitting there on the couch watching [the documentary] and thinking, OK, is he going to mention me? I hope he doesn’t kill me; maybe he shouldn’t mention me,” said Majerle, the recent guest on GOLF’s Subpar Podcast. “So when he said that, I was just as shocked as anybody. And people bring it up to me all the time and I think it’s a badge of honor. The greatest player in the world is trying to kill me — which he did.”
Why Michael Jordan’s Grove XXIII practice facility is one of the coolest spots in golf
Jordan averaged a Finals-record 41 points per game and was named MVP as the Bulls won in six games. Apparently Majerle’s strategy didn’t work so well.
“My whole philosophy playing Jordan was to talk golf — that’s all I did,” Majerle said. “I was like, ‘Hey, Mike, how’s the game? What kind of ball you playing? What’s your driver?’ I’m just trying to keep him mellow so maybe he’ll give me 35 [points against us]. Because if I piss him off he’s going to give me 55. So I’m just talking golf.”
“That guy was so great, not only offensively, but defensibly,” Majerle continued. “If he wanted to score on you, he’s going to score on you. If he didn’t want you to score, you’re not scoring. All I tried to do was beat him up. I was stronger than him. I wasn’t faster, quicker, obviously not more talented, so I just tried to hold, grab, beat him up, hold him, try not to let him get to his spots. That didn’t work either.”
You can listen to Majerle’s entire Subpar episode below.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg
My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.
My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.
I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently
Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.
I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.
I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!
Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.
Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html
And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php
Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.
If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script
Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).
I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.
Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).
Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.
One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X
This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.
You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)
Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley
I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.
Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.
We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!

Fired coach Majerle sues GCU for breach of contract
PHOENIX (AP) — Former men's basketball coach Dan Majerle has filed a lawsuit for breach of contract after being fired by Grand Canyon earlier this year.
In the lawsuit filed in Superior Court on Monday, Majerle seeks the full amount of a contract that ran through 2022-23 before he was fired after seven seasons on March 12.
The lawsuit claims GCU breached the employment agreement with Majerle by not honoring the contract's severance provision after firing him without written grounds for dismissal.
“Dan is disappointed that GCU has decided not to honor their contract,” Majerle's attorney Dana Hooper said in an email. “He simply wants what is fair and proper under the contract and the law."
Majerle was a fan favorite during seven seasons with the NBA's Phoenix Suns and was hired by Grand Canyon in 2013 on the recommendation of former Suns owner Jerry Colangelo.
Majerle was brought in to guide the Antelopes in their transition to Division I. Grand Canyon won at least 20 games its first two Division I seasons, but went 13-17 in an injury-plagued 2019-20 season.
Majerle was fired hours after the Western Athletic Conference and NCAA tournaments were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. He was replaced by former Vanderbilt coach Bryce Drew five days later.
“The University financially supported Coach Majerle and the men’s basketball program at the highest level during his seven-year tenure and wanted nothing but the best for him and the program," Grand Canyon said in a statement. "We regret that Coach Majerle’s tenure had to end the way it did, but the University is prepared to defend itself and its decision if necessary should Coach Majerle decide to continue with litigation."

Startups have taken big strides this year to bring back space travel
As you’ve been going about your life these past few days, a spacecraft named Odysseus has been making its way from Earth to the moon.
If all goes as planned, Odysseus will land on the lunar surface on Thursday afternoon and become the first United States spacecraft to do so since 1972. A successful landing would also be the first private lunar landing in history.
Odysseus was built by a Houston-based company called Intuitive Machines that had been backed by firms including IBX, Capital Factory, and Tactico, and which went public last year via SPAC. And it was launched into space by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s space juggernaut, backed by Founders Fund, Sequoia, Valor Equity Partners, and a host of other VC firms.
And just two weeks ago—on Feb. 9—four astronauts splashed down into the ocean in a SpaceX Crew Dragon Capsule, chartered by VC-backed Axiom Space, after a three-week trip to the International Space Station.
Many sectors in the venture capital market have slowed during the downturn, but space startups are—quite literally—taking off. In 2023, there were 211 funding deals for startups—up from 207 in 2022, according to Crunchbase . While overall deal value dropped, that was mostly due to two mega-deals in 2022 that skewed the comparison.
Twenty years ago, the idea of all of this activity within the private space industry would have seemed highly improbable. SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 rocket has changed the game, making space launches affordable enough for smaller companies to participate.
“By making the Falcon 9 work, having a reusable system, they caused other companies to change their way of doing business in order to stay in business and compete,” says Dr. Michael Lembeck, a former NASA director who is now an aerospace engineering professor at the University of Illinois.
As I reported last week, the Intuitive Machines mission, in particular, could be pretty important to bringing back space travel. Odysseus is carrying NASA experiments that are expected to unearth some key findings that U.S. companies and NASA can use to eventually start transporting people to other planets. “Either the knowledge we get or the actual location is going to end up being our jumping-off point to send people to Mars and to other planets after Mars,” Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration in NASA’s science mission directorate, told reporters at a space conference last week.
I’m a frequent critic of startups—being skeptical is part of my job, after all. But 55 years after Earthlings first stepped foot on the moon, it’s clear that space travel is finally progressing again. And you have SpaceX and other VC-backed startups to thank for it. Now that’s pretty amazing.

Dan Majerle Reveals the Unorthodox Defensive Strategy He Used Against Michael Jordan in the 1993 NBA Finals and Was ‘Shocked’ MJ Called Him Out in ‘The Last Dance’
Plenty of previously unknown Michael Jordan stories came to light during The Last Dance , one of which involved three-time NBA All-Star Dan Majerle, who was specifically targeted by MJ during the 1993 NBA Finals between the Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns.
As anyone who watched the ESPN documentary knows, Jordan used anything he could to motivate himself and the fact that Bulls general manager Jerry Krause liked Majerle was enough for Jordan to single out “Thunder Dan,” who recently spoke on the matter and said he was just as shocked as anyone with the revelation as he honestly had no idea His Airness had put a bullseye on his back.
The Dream Team II member also revealed the strategy he attempted to use to slow Jordan down during that series, which obviously didn’t work as MJ set an NBA Finals scoring average record on the way to leading the Bulls to their third consecutive championship.
Dan Majerle was shocked to learn Michael Jordan had targeted him during the 1993 NBA Finals
For those who may not remember exactly what Michael Jordan said about Dan Majerle during the sixth episode of The Last Dance , this was the quote:
“I knew that Jerry Krause loved Dan Majerle and just because Krause liked him was enough for me. You think he’s a great defensive player? OK, fine. I’m going to show you he’s not.” Michael Jordan on Dan Majerle in The Last Dance
This was apparently quite the stunning revelation to Majerle, who was watching the documentary and wondering if he’d even get mentioned at all. But while initially shocked, he actually sees it as an honor, as he recently told Golf.com .
“I was sitting there on the couch watching [the documentary] and thinking, OK, is he going to mention me? I hope he doesn’t kill me; maybe he shouldn’t mention me. So when he said that, I was just as shocked as anybody. And people bring it up to me all the time and I think it’s a badge of honor. The greatest player in the world is trying to kill me — which he did.” Dan Majerle on getting mentioned by Michael Jordan during The Last Dance
Dan Majerle tried to talk golf to Michael Jordan to slow him down
When Dan Patrick was still with ESPN, one of his signature phrases during Sportscenter was, “You can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him.” Remember that one? Well, that pretty much summarizes Michael Jordan’s career. MJ was always going to get his points. It was just how many that was always the issue for opposing defenses.
Numerous strategies were devised over the years in an attempt to stop him, most notably the “Jordan Rules” created by Chuck Daly, an extreme tactic designed to beat Jordan down during the famous Bulls-Pistons rivalry.
But Dan Majerle took quite a different approach when matched up with Jordan during the ’93 Finals, choosing a much calmer route.
“My whole philosophy playing Jordan was to talk golf — that’s all I did. I was like, ‘Hey, Mike, how’s the game? What kind of ball you playing? What’s your driver?’ I’m just trying to keep him mellow so maybe he’ll give me 35. Because if I piss him off he’s going to give me 55. So I’m just talking golf.” Dan Majerle on his strategy against Michael Jordan in the 1993 NBA Finals
That’s a bold strategy, Dan, let’s see if it pays off. Sorry, can’t resist a good Dodgeball quote. The strategy obviously didn’t pay off as Jordan simply went off against Majerle and the Suns.
MJ averaged a record 41 points in the 1993 NBA Finals
Dan Majerle obviously wasn’t the only person to guard Michael Jordan during the 1993 NBA Finals but neither his strategy nor any other strategy the Phoenix Suns tried during the series worked. Jordan averaged 41 points during the series, an NBA Finals record, including a 55-point outburst in Game 4, which is tied for the second-highest single-game total in Finals history.

4 ways travel credit cards can really save you big on your next vacation
Posted: March 29, 2023 | Last updated: July 29, 2023
What Is a Travel Credit Card?
A travel credit card is a generic term that applies to a type of credit card that offers travel rewards. There are many different kinds of travel credit cards, and each one may offer a different array of rewards, benefits, and perks. Some travel credit cards might earn airline miles, while others offer hotel points.
Finding the right travel credit card for you will depend on your own specific spending and travel patterns.
Different Types of Travel Credit Cards
There are three main types of travel credit cards: airline cards, hotel cards, and cards that earn generic travel points.
Airline Travel Credit Cards
Many airlines offer one or more airline travel credit cards that earn credit card miles that you can use to fly with that specific airline. With each purchase, you can get that much closer to your next flight. Additionally, many airline travel credit cards offer perks like free checked bags, a way to earn elite status, or discounts on inflight purchases.
Hotel Travel Credit Cards
Another type of travel credit cards are hotel credit cards issued by major hotel chains including Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott. Similar to their airline counterparts, hotel travel credit cards let you earn hotel points with each purchase that you can then use to stay with their chain. Many hotel travel credit cards also offer hotel-specific perks, like elite status, increased earnings from stays, or an annual free night certificate.
Bank Travel Credit Cards
If you like traveling but don’t want to tie yourself to a specific airline or hotel chain, you can consider a more generic travel card. Some banks, including American Express, Chase, and Citi, offer travel credit cards that earn their own proprietary credit card points . You can then use these bank points for many different forms of travel.
4 Benefits of Travel Credit Cards
There are a number of advantages to having a travel credit card. Here’s a closer look at these upsides.
Qualify For Significant Welcome Bonuses
Many travel credit cards offer welcome bonuses when you’re approved for the card and meet certain minimum spending criteria. For example, you might earn 60,000 airline miles after spending $2,000 on your card in the first three months.
These welcome bonuses can be worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and they can be a great way to boost your travel budget. That’s why it’s important to understand how a credit card works when you sign up and what requirements there are to make the most out of your card.
Earn Airline Miles and Hotel Points
If you love to travel, you’re likely to be excited about the possibility of earning airline miles or hotel points with each purchase. The miles and points that you earn while using your travel credit card can help fund your next vacation trip.
Get Insurance Benefits
Some travel credit cards offer different types of insurance that you might find valuable if you’re a frequent traveler. Some credit card travel insurance protects you if you are delayed or an airline loses your baggage. Other credit card insurance might cover you while renting a car, allowing you to decline the rental car company’s high-priced insurance offerings.
Enjoy Other Perks and Card Benefits
Perks like elite status, free checked bags, or an annual free night certificate are other potential benefits of having a travel credit card. If you’re traveling outside the country, you might also consider an international credit card that you can use while abroad.
3 Disadvantages of Travel Credit Cards
While travel credit cards can come with many benefits, there are also some disadvantages you’ll want to keep in mind.
Limitations in Travel Choices
If you have an airline or hotel credit card, you will likely only earn airline miles or hotel points with that specific airline or hotel chain. This can limit where you can use your travel rewards. As one example, if you have a Delta Air Lines credit card, you won’t be able to use your miles if you want to fly United or Southwest.
Not as Flexible as Cash-Back Rewards
Earning airline miles and hotel points can seem fun and exciting, but it may not be the best way to maximize your earnings. You’ll want to carefully consider the benefits of credit card miles vs. cash back to decide which type of reward makes the most sense for you. You may find that you’re better off with a cashback credit card like the SoFi credit card .
Potential for Annual Fees
Some (but not all) travel credit cards come with annual fees. These annual fees may be waived for the first year as an incentive for you to sign up, but you’ll be on the hook to pay the fee each year you continue to have the card.
While it is possible to get more value from your travel credit card than the amount of the annual fee, you’ll want to make sure that’s the case for your situation. Otherwise, you’ll want to focus your search on no annual fee credit cards .
Are Travel Credit Cards Worth It?
Whether a travel credit card is worth it will depend quite a bit on your own specific financial and travel situation. There’s no denying that there are many people who have used travel credit cards to great effect, traveling around the world at a discounted rate thanks to miles and points. Others have signed up for travel cards and continue to pay annual fees, even though they aren’t traveling as often.
Alternatives to Travel Credit Cards
You do have other options you might think about if you’re not interested in a travel credit card.
If you’re intrigued by earning rewards with a specific brand but don’t travel often, you might consider a private label credit card . These types of cards can offer benefits at a specific store or retail establishment.
Another option could be a cash-back rewards credit card. This would allow you to earn cash as a reward, which you could use for travel or anything else that suits you.
The Takeaway
Travel credit cards are a type of credit card that offers rewards, perks, and benefits for frequent travelers. You might earn airline miles, hotel points, or more generic bank points that you can use for a variety of different types of travel. While it is possible to use travel credit cards to rack up airline miles or other travel rewards, you’ll also want to keep an eye on any annual fees that you’re being charged.

Classics revisited: nike air force high (1993).
This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We may receive compensation when you click on links to those products. The opinions and information provided on this site are original editorial content of Sneaker News.
With all the years of rabid love and dedication that so many have shown to the legendary Nike Basketball arsenal, there aren’t too many forgotten classics still lost in obscurity, especially from the highly fruitful and well-documented early 90’s era. That said, there are still a few gems floating around out there that most sneakerheads have either forgotten about, or in the case of some of our younger readers, probably never even knew they existed. Despite the very unfortunate and generic model name, the Nike Air Force High is right at the top of the list of super-dope Nike Basketball designs that have fallen by the wayside. The shoe was released in the spring of 1993 and first got people’s attention on the feet of sharpshooter Dan Majerle as he and the Phoenix Suns unsuccessfully attempted to stop the Bulls’ first threepeat campaign in that year’s NBA Finals.
The Air Force High took the Nike Force silo to new places with one of the most stylish, yet battle-ready designs ever seen out of the popular Nike Basketball subdivision. The shoe featured a super-high cut with a back-and-forth crossing instep strap and neoprene sock liner, as well as a breathable mesh tongue and visible Air unit in the heel. The Black/White/Lapis colorway seen in these images flaunted a full black nubuck upper with a white Swoosh and vibrant hits of blue and red supplying the accents, making it one of the most eye-catching Nike models around at the time. It seems that despite its initial popularity, the 1993 Air Force High has been somewhat lost in the shuffle of sneaker history, but there’s plenty about the shoe that would translate pretty nicely into a contemporary Retro model. While there are no plans to bring back the Air Force High that we’re currently aware of, there are definitely a lot of people out there that would be pretty pleased to see these return to retail.
