Step by step guide to using the safari password manager, final thoughts.

You probably already know about iCloud if you're using at least one Apple device. The cloud storage and synchronization service allows it to store and access content across multiple devices, including Mac, iPhone, iPad, and more.  These include files and information like documents, photos, music, video, and contacts.

Apple's iCloud service is also at the heart of the iCloud Keychain , where you can store website usernames/passwords, among other items. In this how-to, we're concentrating on how to add, edit, and delete Safari password content. Similar tools are available on other browsers like Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox .

  • You should also consider the best browsers and best secure browsers .

Steps for saving, viewing and managing passwords

  • Before you can save any username/password combinations, you must first be sure to have an Apple ID or iCloud account.
  • From there, you can begin adding usernames and passwords for websites you frequent.
  • You can also take advantage of Apple's new passkey feature.
  • Safari is only available on Apple devices such as Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

1. Go into the manager

To get started, you must first create an Apple ID . The username/password combinate is usable across all Apple devices to log into iCloud.com. You can proceed once you have an Apple ID and are logged into your device.

On Mac, the Safari password manager is located by choosing Safari on the menu bar at the top left of your Mac. From there, click Settings from the pull-down menu.

Next, click on the Passwords option at the top. Input your password as needed.

2. Adjust existing password settings

You can adjust password information in the iCloud Keychain directly from Safari. To get started, go into the Passwords section of Mac Settings (see above) and log in as necessary. Then, use the search box on the left side of the display to find the password information you wish to change. Click Edit .

You can change the username and password for a website and add notes when applicable. After making a change, click Save .

Click Delete Password to delete the password information.

Thanks to iCloud, any changes you make here will also be reflected in other Apple devices that use your Apple ID.

4. Using Autofill in Safari

With AutoFill, you can fill in your previously saved usernames and website passwords. The tool is also a great way to add a new username/password combination for the first time and to create a strong password.

You will see AutoFill pop up when a website asks you to create a password.

You will see an Autofill prompt In Safari when it's time to use or create a password.

Click the AutoFill Key button, then choose Suggest New Password . For optimal security, you should use the suggested strong password. However, if you choose not to use the suggested password, you can easily select the password field, click “ Don’t Use ,” and enter your preferred password.

From there, enter the rest of the required information to create the website account.

Why use a separate password manager instead of a browser?

While most web browsers have their own password management feature, except for Safari which incorporates it into iCloud Keychain, in-browser password managers have limitations. They can only be used with one specific browser and cannot be accessed from other browsers. On the other hand, standalone password managers are compatible with any browser on your device, making them a more versatile option. Moreover, it is important to consider security when choosing a password manager. Browsers are not updated as frequently as standalone password managers, which can pose a security risk in case of a breach.

Does Safari have a built-in VPN?

Like many other browsers, Safari does not come with a pre-installed VPN. However, several reliable third-party VPNs like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and SurfShark can easily be integrated with Safari. With a VPN, you can significantly boost the security and privacy of your online activities.

Are browser password managers safe?

To guarantee the safety of your passwords, using browser password managers like Safari with encryption is a great first step. However, there are additional measures you can take to further enhance your protection. It is highly recommended to create a strong and secure master password. The newest optional feature in Microsoft Edge mandates that you input your master password before making any changes to the password manager, thereby adding an extra layer of security. Regularly backing up your password manager is also a wise precaution in case of loss or theft. Another crucial step is creating a Firefox profile, allowing content synchronization across devices. This ensures that any changes made on your computer are reflected on your mobile device and vice versa.

What is iCloud Keychain?

iCloud Keychain is a highly reliable password manager that securely stores sensitive information such as passwords and credit card details in an online vault as part of Apple’s iCloud suite of services. Users can easily access their stored data by simply logging in to the same iCloud account on any Apple device. Thanks to the end-to-end encryption feature, user data is protected and can only be accessed by the user, even in the unlikely event of an iCloud account breach. Furthermore, the two-factor authentication feature provides an extra layer of security to user accounts, ensuring that they remain safe and secure at all times.

What are Apple Passkeys?

Apple Passkeys hope to eliminate the need for passwords eventually. This authentication method adheres to industry standards and guarantees improved security features while streamlining the login experience.

Passkeys create a unique cryptographic key pair for every website or application you use. The website or app stores the public key while the private one remains on your device. When you log in, your device produces a cryptographic signature using the private key. The website or application can then authenticate your identity by verifying this signature. With Passkeys, you can rest assured that your online security is in good hands.

Like passwords, passkeys are kept in Apple's iCloud Keychain.

The built-in Safari password manager, part of the iCloud Keychain, makes tracking website usernames and passwords easier. Better still, those items carry over to other Apple devices, including iPhone and iPad. In the coming years, Apple hopes to eliminate the need for passwords and replace them with more secure passkeys. However, username and password combinations remain the most popular choice for website authentication.

How to find saved passwords and credit cards on your iPhone in iOS 17

How to find your passwords and credit cards on iOS 17!

Tap Saved Credit Cards Use Face ID or Touch ID to verify your identity (or your four-digit code) Select the credit card you want to view

While iOS's iCloud Keychain and Passwords features are fantastic when it comes to auto-filling information on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, both also serve as a very handy repository for a lot of your information.

For instance, if you're trying to buy something and you don't have the option to use autofill on iOS, you can dive into your settings to find your stored passwords, credit card information, and more. This is handy for making payments over the phone, or double-checking the password of an account before you try to log in somewhere new. Given how sensitive all this information is, it's stored safely behind iPhone's Touch ID or Face ID security measures, meaning you're the only person who can access it.

So how do you find your passwords and credit card information on your iPhone? Luckily, iOS 17 features a dedicated section for your passwords, while autofill information for credit cards can easily be found in your Safari settings, here's everything you need to know.

How to find passwords on iPhone

The iOS Settings app includes a standalone Passwords section which lists all of your saved accounts, usernames, and passwords in one place. Not only does it show you what these passwords are, but it can even make security recommendations based on whether Apple has detected compromised passwords in data breaches or leaks. Here's how to find passwords on iPhone:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll down and tap Passwords
  • Verify your identity with Face ID or Touch ID
  • Scroll down and tap the website name that you want the password for
  • Tap the Password tab to reveal the password
  • If you need to paste it somewhere, tap Copy

How to set up AutoFill on iPhone

If you aren't using it already, you can enable AutoFill within Safari, which makes it easier to enter information such as your name, address, and more.

  • Scroll down and tap Safari
  • Under the General section tap AutoFill
  • Tap My Info
  • Select your name from your contacts list

How to find credit card information on iPhone

Just like your passwords, you can find your stored credit card information on your iPhone. This can be handy if you're making a payment over the phone, or entering your details for the first time without AutoFill assistance. Here's how to find it:

  • Tap Saved Credit Cards
  • Use Face ID or Touch ID to verify your identity (or your four-digit code)
  • Select the credit card you want to view

Your iPhone will then show you your card's name, number, expiry, security code, and a brief description. All of this information can be edited by pressing edit in the top right-hand corner.

How to find passwords on a Mac, MacBook, and Mac Mini

Sandy Writtenhouse

If you opt to use iCloud Keychain over one of the popular password managers , then you already know its major benefit: Your passwords sync across your Apple devices. For example, you can save a password on your iPhone and then access it on your Mac.

Getting started finding passwords on Mac

How to find passwords on mac with system preferences, how to find passwords on mac with safari, how to see saved passwords on mac, copy, edit, or delete a password.

With the MacOS Monterey upgrade, Apple made it even easier to see saved passwords using System Preferences. For those who’ve decided not to upgrade to Monterey, though, you can still find your passwords with Safari. Let’s take a look at how to do both.

Reading the above, you probably realized one thing: To see passwords on your Mac, you’ll need to know your Mac’s keychain password. In other words, you need a password to find your passwords! So, be sure to know or locate your Mac’s keychain password before getting started.

  • How to check your Mac for viruses and malware
  • Here’s how to unlock a keyboard that’s locked
  • How to change your default browser in Windows 11

Totally stumped? You’ll have to reset your keychain password to access the others on your machine.

If you’re using MacOS Monterey or later, you have a dedicated spot in System Preferences for your passwords.

Step 1 : Click the Apple icon in your menu bar and pick System Preferences .

Step 2 : Select Passwords — it’s the key icon.

Step 3 : Enter the password for your Mac, or use your Apple Watch to unlock the section.

You’ll then see your list of passwords with an option to search for one in particular.

With earlier versions of MacOS, you can view saved passwords using Safari. If you do decide to upgrade to MacOS Monterey , you can find your passwords in either System Preferences or with Safari.

Step 1 : Open Safari.

Step 2 : Click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar.

Step 3 : Select the Passwords tab.

Step 4 : Enter the password for your Mac or use your Apple Watch to unlock the section.

When the passwords section is unlocked, you can browse through or use the search to find a specific password.

No matter which above option you use to find your saved passwords on Mac, you take the same action to view one. When you select a location on the left, such as a website, you’ll see your username and password on the right. Each password is masked for added security .

To see a password, place your cursor over the masked password on the right. This removes the mask for you to view the password.

Not what you were looking for? Find your Mac Wi-Fi password elsewhere.

Using iCloud Keychain, you can not only sync your passwords, but you can manage them as well.

To copy the password, click it and choose Copy Password . This places the password on your clipboard for you to paste where needed.

To change a password, click the Edit button. If you changed your password outside of Safari on your Apple device, you can update it here and click Save . To change the password from this Edit tool, click Change Password on Website .

To delete a password, click Edit . Press Delete Password on the bottom left and then confirm in the window that appears.

Troubleshooting, how to view saved passwords in safari on mac.

How to View Saved Passwords in Safari on Mac

If you save passwords with Safari on Mac, you can easily go back and view those saved passwords. This is fantastic if you’ve lost a login, or perhaps if you forgot the password to one of your online accounts.

As long as you previously signed in to your account from Safari on Mac, iPhone, or iPad, you may be able to see the exact password you used thanks to iCloud Keychain.

Safari has a built-in password management solution that fills out website usernames and passwords for you. Every time you log in to a website in Safari for the first time, the browser will ask you if you want to save the password. When you click “Save Password”, Safari keeps a record of this data so that you don’t have to type in these details the next time you log in. If you’ve been using this feature regularly, you could potentially forget your password. Thankfully, you can recover the password pretty quickly even if you lose it. Let’s review how to see and reveal a saved password directly in Safari for Mac.

How to Find Saved Passwords in Safari for Mac

Viewing all the passwords you’ve entered while browsing in Safari is a pretty simple and straightforward procedure. Just follow the steps below to get started.

How to View Saved Passwords in Safari on Mac

Pretty useful, right? Viewing saved passwords in Safari on MacOS is incredibly convenient, for many obvious reasons.

Keep in mind that you will only be able to find this lost password in Safari if you chose to “save password” when you typed in your login credentials on the particular website. You can also manually add account information to Safari for websites in the same menu as a one-time thing and you don’t have to remember your password again.

There’s one other way to view all your saved passwords in Safari and that’s using Keychain Access . Here, you’ll see password information for all the sign-ins you’ve made from your Mac and not just Safari. However, if you don’t use iCloud Keychain and have changed the password for any of your accounts from another device, this information that’s stored on your Mac will be outdated and can no longer be used unless you update it manually.

All the passwords you enter in Safari are securely stored in the keychain. Furthermore,  all the web passwords that Safari save to Keychain  will be synced across all your other Apple devices with the help of iCloud, meaning all of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac hardware will have access to the keychain saved data.

Obviously this covers the Mac, but you can see accounts and view passwords on iPhone and iPad with Keychain too .

Were you able to view all the saved passwords in Safari and regain access to the website you needed to? Were you able to use this method to recover your forgotten password? If not, did you find any other solution? What are your overall thoughts on Safari’s built-in password manager? Do share your valuable opinions and experience below.

Instead you'll be asked if you want to save them all over again after you enter it manually, in which case, you'll either select "Never for This Website" or "Not Now" to stop it from being saved.

If you have iCloud Keychain enabled, your passwords will sync to all of your approved devices. So if you delete a password on your iPhone, you may also delete it on your iPad, Mac, etc. More info on iCloud Keychain can be found here .

Disable Autofill

Finally, you can disable Safari from saving all usernames and passwords. To do this, open the Settings app, tap on Safari, hit AutoFill, then disable the "Names and Passwords" option.

You'll now have to manually enter your username and password each time that you enter a website. Enable "Names and Passwords" to get AutoFill back in Safari.

How to use the password manager in safari on iphone or ipad.

If you use Safari on your iPad or iPhone, you can store website passwords and then manage them using the Passwords settings.

Quick Links

Using the passwords manager on safari for ios.

If you use Safari on your iPad or iPhone, you can store website passwords and then manage them using the Passwords settings. The passwords manager on iOS is easy to use, and one of the best we've found on mobile devices.

We know that having and using a passwords manager is all but a necessity on any computer or mobile device. For one, if you're even moderately security conscious, you are probably using strong passwords . Unfortunately, typing strong passwords on a mobile device (assuming a password with upper and lower-case letter, numbers, and symbols) is kind of a pain.

You might also change things up from website to website. It goes without saying that you shouldn't use the same password twice (easier said than done), so you need to exercise your memory in order to have a unique password for every single website.

To that end, if you use an iPhone or iPad, then Safari already includes an excellent, robust passwords manager, which we'll show and explain to you today.

Access the passwords manager by first opening the "Settings" on your iOS device. Scroll to and tap open "Safari" in the left column, then tap open the "Passwords" category.

Before you can access your passwords, you will need to verify your identity using Touch ID . On older devices that don't have Touch ID, you will need to enter your passcode.

Every account on your device will be shown. Your passwords won't appear, instead you will only see the user ID associated with each account. Notice that there's an arrow on the right edge of each account row.

Tap open any account and you will now see your user name, password, and the associated website.

Tap the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner and you can edit everything or delete the account from your device.

Back on the main passwords screen, tap the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner and notice that a selection circle appears to the left of each account row.

With the edit option enabled, you can select multiple accounts at once. The advantage to this is that you can go through all of your accounts and select the ones you no longer have or want stored, then simply tap the "Delete" button in the upper-left corner.

You don't have to actually access each account to copy your user name and password to the clipboard. From the passwords screen, you can long-press and the option for both will appear on a context menu.

We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that you can tap open the "Search" field.

When you do this, the keyboard will appear and you can then tap a few characters to find the account or user name you're seeking.

Finally, we need to point out that your passwords are saved to iCloud so they're available on all your iOS devices. If you simply want to prevent Safari information from being synced to iCloud, then tap off the button next to it in the iCloud settings.

If you want to turn off iCloud Keychain syncing, then your Safari information such as bookmarks and history will still be synced but passwords will not.

The passwords manager for Safari on iOS is clearly one of the easiest to use and you can quickly transfer information from it to other browser logins.

While we can't recommend copying sensitive information like this as plain text to your device's clipboard, it can make things substantially easier. Just be advised that doing so is a security risk.

We hope you found this article helpful and you now feel comfortable managing website user accounts and passwords on your iPhone or iPad. If you have any questions or comments, we invite you to leave your feedback in our discussion forum.

How to import your passwords to Apple’s iCloud Keychain via Safari

If you’re leaving lastpass and are a safari user, this may be the simplest option.

If you’re moving from LastPass (or another password manager you’re dissatisfied with), you may be tempted to simply go with the password manager that comes with your browser or operating system. It’s certainly an easy solution, and a reasonable one, depending on your point of view. Until recently, third-party password managers were known to be more secure, but Apple and Google have been working to make their built-in password managers more secure , while Microsoft is adding one to its authenticator app . So it could be a viable choice.

One way, however, that these built-in password managers don’t stand up to their independent competitors is how tricky it can be to get preexisting passwords into their systems.

  • How to import your passwords to Chrome and the Google Password Manager

If you tend to hang out in the Apple ecosystem, that means using Safari for your passwords and passing them to your other devices using Apple’s iCloud Keychain. Here’s how to move your password data into iCloud Keychain.

Make sure you have Keychain

iCloud Keychain is how Apple syncs your information across devices — not just passwords, but also credit card info, Wi-Fi passwords, etc. If you haven’t used it, you may want to check to make sure it’s been set up and turned on. (If you plan to use your passwords on your mobile iOS device as well, you might want to check it there, too.)

Using a macOS device:

  • Go to your System Preferences app by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner
  • If you have macOS Mojave or earlier, click iCloud. Otherwise, select Apple ID > iCloud.
  • Go down the list of apps, and make sure that Keychain is checked

Make sure you have iCloud Keychain.

Using an iOS device:

  • Go to Settings and tap on your name
  • Tap on iCloud and scroll down to Keychain
  • If Keychain is Off, tap on the entry and then toggle it on

Import your password data

In order to get your data into Keychain, you need to import it into Safari on your Mac. Simple, right? Well, not really.

Unfortunately, unlike most password managers, you can’t import passwords from a CSV file into Safari. You can, however, import passwords from either Firefox or Chrome . So if you’ve got a CSV file from another password manager and you don’t have either of those browsers on your machine, you’ll have to install one of them first and upload your passwords into it. (You can find instructions for importing passwords into Chrome here and Firefox here .)

Once your passwords have been imported into one of the other browsers:

  • Close the other browser
  • Open Safari, go to File > Import From, and choose Chrome or Firefox. You can import Bookmarks, History, Passwords, or any combination thereof by checking the appropriate boxes.

where does safari store passwords

One note: I had a series of mishaps trying to import from Firefox into Safari. Safari would invariably crash, even after I made a series of tweaks to Firefox. I finally gave up and tried it with Chrome, and the import worked immediately. Your mileage may vary.

You can check to see if the import worked by going to Safari’s top menu and selecting Safari > Preferences > Passwords. (You’ll have to enter your user password to access the password list.) You should see your passwords listed there.

Once you’ve imported your passwords into Safari, they should be automatically picked up by iCloud Keychain and useable across all your approved devices. You can check by typing and clicking on “Keychain Access” using Spotlight Search. That should bring up your Keychain app; you can click on iCloud in the top-left column and “Passwords” in the bottom left to see your imported passwords.

You should find your passwords in Keychain Access (for obvious reasons, some data has been grayed out).

How to Safely Share Passwords Stored in Safari From Your iPhone or Mac

If you have shared online accounts, apple's newest operating systems let you more easily disclose website passwords from your iphone, ipad, or mac..

Lance Whitney

Want to share website passwords in Safari with certain friends and family members? Apple offers a few different ways to do this from its default browser, but the process has improved with the latest versions of its operating systems.

Available in iOS 17 , iPadOS 17 , and macOS Sonoma or higher, the Family Passwords option lets you share passwords with other people who are in your contacts list.

Everyone must be running the newest OS version on their respective devices. On an iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > General > Software Update . You’ll be prompted to install the latest update or be told your device is up to date. Mac users can open System Settings > General > Software Update . Click the Update Now button if you’re not already running the latest version.

Confirm iCloud Keychain Syncing

The person is then asked if they want to move any of their own individual passwords to the new family group so that other people in the group can use them. That person can then select the account passwords they want to share. All the shared passwords in the family group then appear on the screen for all the members.

How to Sign in With a Shared Password

where does safari store passwords

The next time you or another person wants to sign into a website whose password is shared with the group, you should see a prompt in Safari asking if you want to use the shared password. Tap the Use button to sign into the site with the saved username and password.

Manage Your Passwords

where does safari store passwords

Want to manage which passwords are shared? Return to Settings > Passwords . Notice that there are now two groups for your passwords—My Passwords and Family Passwords. You can move a password from one group to another depending on whether you want to use the password privately or share it with the group.

To share a private password, tap My Passwords and select the account with the password you want to share. Open the Group menu and change it from My Passwords to your shared group. Here, you can also create a new group. Confirm by tapping the command for Move to Group .

Oct 15, 2019

In this post, we reveal the complete guide to cleaning and caring for your copper mugs. From how to maximize the lifespan of your mugs to how to ensure that they maintain that brilliant copper shine, we have you covered. Let's get started!

Introduction

Since the creation of the Moscow Mule in the 1940's, copper mugs have never been more popular than they are today. This refreshing cocktail made of lime juice, vodka, and ginger beer is traditionally served over ice in an iconic copper mule mug. No matter what beverage you choose to serve in it, the appeal of the copper mug is hard to deny. As bars, restaurants and at-home use of copper mugs continues to grow in popularity, it is important to know how to properly care for and clean copper. Like any drinking vessel, copper cups, mugs, water bottles and tumblers need to be washed after every use. Copper does require specific care and maintenance, however it's quite simple and easy to learn and do.

First and foremost, copper mugs should be cleaned properly for health and safety reasons. Whether at a restaurant or at home, you don't want anyone getting sick from drinking from an unwashed cup.

There is something compelling about the warm glow of polished copper. A huge part of the appeal and popularity of cocktails like the Moscow Mule is the unique aesthetic of the copper mug. This metal will tarnish naturally with time and use, so cleaning it properly can be essential to keeping it shiny, and fully experiencing the many benefits of drinking from a copper mug.

upper half of Statue of Liberty against sky background

Like iron developing rust, copper will naturally tarnish  over time with exposure to humidity and other elements found in the air. Copper's blue-green tarnish, known as patina, can be either useful or annoying, depending on its intended use.

The patina actually serves as a protective layer for the copper beneath, and can be useful in outdoor applications such as roofing or pipes.  However, when it comes to mugs or cups, we want the copper to shine as warmly as possible, so it is essential to know about preventative care and maintenance.

Don't worry, it's super easy to do, and incredibly satisfying to restore and polish your tarnished copper mugs.

How Do You Clean Copper Mugs?

Cleaning copper mugs is like cleaning most anything, except that it MUST be washed by hand. In other words, never put them in the dishwasher, ever. Take 30 seconds to gently wash them by hand with a soft sponge, soap and warm water.

For most people at home, this shouldn't be a problem. But some high-volume bars or restaurants might not be able to dedicate the time needed for proper care. This is one reason a business may prefer a tin-lined  or lacquered copper cup that may need less polishing, although they too should still be washed by hand.

The most important part of cleaning your copper mug is drying it!

Residual water in the slightest amount can lead to tarnishing, so experts highly recommend you dry your copper mug twice, with two different soft towels or cloths until all moisture is removed.  This extra step only takes a few moments, and will go a long way towards the durability and cleanliness of your copper mule mugs.

If you want your copper mug to look nice, dry it twice!

5 Easy and Natural Ways to Remove Copper Tarnish

Owning a copper mug comes with the added responsibility of some occasional, simple maintenance. When your favorite mug starts to turn green, here are some easy solutions to restore its natural shine!

Lemon or Limes and Salt

four slices of lemon lined up and sprinkled with salts

This simple method is quick and easy, and ideal for bars or restaurants that may have an abundance of lemons on hand. Simply pour some table or sea salt onto a dish, and cut a fresh lemon or lime into 1/4th slices. Dip the fruit slice into the salt, and scrub the copper mug with slow, methodical circles inside and out. The change should be almost instantaneous, and when the tarnish has been removed, wash under warm or cool water, and dry thoroughly.

Vinegar and Salt

Mix one cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and five cups of water. Pour the solution into a saucepan, place your mug into the saucepan, and bring it to a boil. After a few minutes, the tarnish will have disappeared, and you can remove the mug with tongs, rinse it in cold water, and dry thoroughly with two soft dish towels.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Create a paste with three parts baking soda, and one part vinegar. Use a sponge to apply it to the mug with small circular motions and let it sit for about 10 minutes in order for the magic to happen. After that, simply rinse and dry until all moisture has been removed.

Harness the power of tomatoes to clean your tarnished copper mug! Apply the ketchup using a soft sponge or toothbrush, always rubbing in small circles. Then let it stand for 30 minutes. Remove the ketchup in the same way you applied it (a specially designated tarnish-toothbrush can be a highly effective tool for getting into those hard to reach places). Finally, rinse with water, and dry thoroughly with two soft towels.

Tamarind Paste

Tamarind is a tropical fruit, popular in Caribbean, African and Indian cuisine. It contains tartaric acid, which helps remove tarnish from brass and copper. If this is something you have access to, simply add water to create a paste, and rub it onto the copper with a soft sponge or cloth.  After a few minutes, rinse off the paste, and dry completely.

Metal Polish

Although the natural methods listed above are all equally effective, inexpensive and safe, another option is to use a tarnish remover or metal polish. Popular brands like Brasso are great for polishing many different kinds of metals, but the main ingredients may be less than desirable (rubbing alcohol, ammonia, mineral spirits and silica powder). Chances are you can easily find most of the ingredients for cleaning copper mugs in your pantry, and can avoid buying a product full of harsh chemicals.

Is It Safe To Drink From Copper Mugs?

Yes, it is safe to drink from copper mugs , despite click-bait headlines, myths and legislation that may suggest otherwise. True, when using 100% pure copper mugs it is possible that trace amounts of copper could be ingested. However, this can be mitigated by using stainless-steel plated copper mugs.

Copper is an essential part of human biology, and is necessary for regulating metabolic systems and vital organs. Copper deficiency can lead to arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

Not only do our bodies need copper, we also have systems in place to naturally deal with any excess copper. Verified scientific studies have shown copper can do impressive things.

  • Copper and Iron work together to form red blood cells.
  • Copper helps maintain collagen, and along with other antioxidants, can reduce signs of aging.
  • Copper helps absorb excess iron in the liver.
  • Copper improves brain and nerve cell synaptic responses.
  • Copper aids in digestion and helps with ulcers and inflammation.

Copper toxicity is quite rare and, according to the World Health Organization , "There is a greater risk of health effects from a deficiency of copper intake than excessive copper intake."

The FDA guidelines do not recommend using copper for any food or beverage purposes, solely because of the extra care needed to maintain it, and applies exclusively to commercial operations, with varying local and state regulations.

This is meant to protect consumers from improperly cleaned or exposed copper mugs and cookware in bars and restaurants, and does not apply to home use. The FDA suggests the public learn about proper care and maintenance before using copper mugs, but scientists have debunked the claim that a Moscow Mule can give you copper poisoning.

When using 100% pure copper mugs and a liquid with a pH below 6.0 (like lime juice), and that liquid remains in the mug for an extended period of time, there is a chance you could consume amounts of copper. This is the reason why it is generally a good idea to use copper mugs lined with stainless-steel .

No, never! All copper cookware, utensils or mugs should be washed by hand, no exceptions. Dishwashers typically use harsh detergent, powerful water sprays and high heat that can seriously harm your copper mug both inside and out.

Dishwashers can lead to dents, tarnishing, and flaking or cracking. So take 30 seconds to do right by your copper mugs, and wash and dry them by hand!

Lines Versus Unlined Copper Mugs

When purchasing a copper mug, there are three basic options - 100% copper, tin-lined, and copper plated.

Copper is a great thermal conductor, and will keep your drink colder for longer (or hotter for longer, depending on the drinks). This is a big part of what makes the Moscow Mule an attractive summer beverage, and why copper mugs are great for cocktails in general.

Lined copper mugs  (usually with zinc, stainless-steel  or tin) can be a great choice. The double lining improves their durability, and can give them a great look. Unlike pure copper, lined copper mugs also offer additional health benefits by avoiding reactions between acids in your drink and pure copper.

Both lined and unlined copper mugs must be washed by hand and both will develop a patina over time. Lined mugs might take slightly less time to polish, because you only need worry about the outside. However, now that you know how to clean tarnished copper mugs, it's nothing you can't handle.

Essential Tips To Care For Your Copper Mugs

Copper mugs are stylish and good for your health. They keep your cold drinks chilled, and your hot drinks steaming. Copper mugs have been used for thousands of years for water purification and health benefits, and have made a triumphant rise in popularity since the invention of the Moscow Mule in the 1940's.

Whatever you choose to put in your copper mug, remember these three simple tips:

  • When serving drinks, don't let them sit for more than 4 hours. Drink up!
  • After each use, take the time to hand-wash your copper mugs with soap and water, and use TWO TOWELS to dry them thoroughly.
  • When your copper mug begins to tarnish, use one of the five easy and natural ways listed above to polish it to perfection.

Rate dollar tree.

We love to hear from our customers and overwhelmingly the two comments we repeatedly receive are:

“I can’t believe this cool item I just found at Dollar Tree!” AND… “I can’t believe it’s only $1.00!”

That’s when we know we’ve done our jobs right! We have worked hard to create an environment where shopping is fun… a place where our customers can discover new treasures every week… a store where entire families can enjoy hunting for that special something. Every Dollar Tree store is bright and well lit, clean and well organized, and stocked with endless hidden treasures!

Just as important, especially during these tough economic times, we continue to offer our customers products they need at extreme values! We carry a broad, exciting mix of merchandise that includes many trusted national and regional brands. Some of the product departments you’ll find at Dollar Tree include housewares, glassware, dinnerware, cleaning supplies, candy, snacks, food, health and beauty, toys, gifts, gift bags and wrap, party supplies, stationery, craft supplies, teaching supplies, books, seasonal décor, and more! Everything you need for every day, every holiday, every occasion… and every single item is only $1 (or less)!

The best part is that there is probably a Dollar Tree store near you ! We are a national company with thousands of stores conveniently located in shopping centers and malls in all 48 contiguous states. You can also shop online for larger quantities of the same items you’d find in our stores, plus download craft and project sheets, take advantage of online exclusives and manufacturer closeouts, and get great ideas on our small business, teacher, non-profit/charities, craft, and wedding pages. We invite you to come check us out, compare our prices, and stretch your dollars by shopping with us… Discover the Dollar Tree Difference!
