We are deeply saddened to hear about the wildfires currently impacting the town of Lahaina in Maui.  We have a very special relationship with the people and islands of Hawaii, as we sail to the beautiful state year-round.  It is a magical destination and one that is highly sought out by our guests for its natural beauty, culture and unparalleled experiences. To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org .  In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, whilst also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. As of September 3, 2023, we have recommenced our weekly overnight calls to Kahului, Maui following the guidance and encouragement of the Maui community, Hawai'i state governor Josh Green and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

Stop by the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hilo before setting sail towards Vancouver, where you’ll disembark after enjoying several relaxing days at sea

Featured Highlights

Dramatic scenery.

You’re constantly aware of the power of nature in Hawaii, where the lush scenery is like something out of another world. Jagged cliffs, beaches of glittering black sand, ribbon-like waterfalls cascading from emerald escarpments, and smoldering volcanoes catch your eye at every turn. You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Stories relayed from one generation to the next invoke the spirits and the historical events that have shaped the islands. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Intriguing Cuisine

Hawaii boasts a unique cuisine, with influences from Polynesia, Japan, and America. Taste fresh tuna poke bowls, sweet pineapple, and juicy strawberry papaya. Try lomi lomi, salted salmon with tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. Sample local chocolate and enjoy coffee made from Kona beans. Experience everything from delicate sushi and sashimi to moco loco. Look out for spam, a local favorite, served in wontons or as Spam musubi with rice and nori.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

13 Unforgettable Hawaii Cruises, Including a Tiny 36-Passenger Sailing and a Disney Ship

13 Best Hawaii Cruises 2022 Disney Norwegian Viking and More

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The thing about Hawaii cruises is that there’s no bad time of year to take one. Thanks to its year-round sunshine and warm weather, Hawaii will be there for you whenever you’re ready to set sail.

Several cruise lines, including Holland America, Princess Cruises, and Viking Cruises, call on ports in Hawaii, with many of them traveling to or from the United States or Canada. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only company that sails exclusively between Oahu and neighboring Hawaiian islands. The  Pride of America , a United States-themed ship, makes stops in Maui , Kauai, and the Big Island before returning to Honolulu , a perfect home base for visiting Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor.

Sailing between the Hawaiian Islands is generally relatively calm, though there are occasional reports of rough patches on cruises that cross the Pacific Ocean. And while every month is a good month to cruise to Hawaii, peak whale-watching season in the region is between January and March. It can be rainy, so you’ll want to pack a rain jacket. But a little rain might just be worth it to avoid summer crowds in one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

Cruises are an ideal way to explore Hawaii, and there are plenty of options that fit a broad range of travel styles and tastes.

Norwegian Pride of America

Norwegian - Pride of America

The best Hawaii cruises for easy island hopping

Most cruises to Hawaii require several days at sea, but not Norwegian’s  Pride of America . The 2,186-passenger  Pride of America is the only cruise ship that sails from Oahu to neighboring Hawaiian islands, minimizing sea days while taking travelers to four Hawaiian islands in a single week. The  ship departs from Honolulu every Saturday all year long, making it easy to tack on visits to Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and Waikiki Beach. The ship spends the night in Maui and Kauai, and makes two stops on the island of Hawaii—also known as the Big Island—in Hilo and Kona. Aboard the  Pride of America , you’ll find a Miami -inspired pool, a Gold Rush Saloon, and restaurants for every palate.

Royal Caribbean offers several  eight- to 10-night cruises between Hawaii and the western coast of North America, giving travelers the chance to island hop between Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island before or after sailing the Pacific Ocean. This itinerary doesn’t require as many sea days as a roundtrip journey but includes plenty of time for lounging by the pool, catching shows, and trying all the on board restaurants.

Princess Cruises in Hawaii

Princess Cruises in Hawaii

The best Hawaii cruises for travelers who love sea days

Holland America ships sail roundtrip from  San Diego and Vancouver to Hawaii , giving travelers the chance to swap a long flight across the Pacific Ocean for 10 long, lazy sea days. The journey includes stops in Ensenada, Mexico, as well as at four Hawaiian islands: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Or opt for one of Princess Cruises’ many  Hawaii itineraries . They sail roundtrip to Hawaii from Los Angeles , San Francisco , and San Diego . Ships spend long days in port, and a variety of restaurants and events, like movies screened under the stars, are sure to keep you and yours entertained on board the ship. And while 10 might seem like a lot of sea days, skipping the airport could be a priceless vacation upgrade.

The best Hawaii cruises for travelers who love sea days and small ships

For a smaller ship, consider Viking Cruises. Viking’s 17-day roundtrip  Hawaiian Islands Sojourn from Los Angeles happens on board the Viking  Star , which carries a maximum of 930 passengers. This journey includes 10 sea days and stops in Hilo, where you can see Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s largest volcano, and in Kauai, where you can take in the breathtaking sight of Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Check the ship’s daily schedule for expert lectures, and make time to experience the spa’s snow room while getting acquainted with Nordic bathing rituals.

For fewer sea days, sail from Honolulu to Vancouver on the 462-passenger Seabourn  Odyssey . Seabourn’s  11-day Hawaiian itinerary includes stops in Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island and requires just six sea days, plenty of time for playing cards, lounging by the pool, and relaxing at the spa.

The best Hawaii cruises for travelers with lots of time

Why cruise only to Hawaii when you could cruise to Hawaii, Tahiti, and Fiji? Holland America includes several Hawaiian stops on longer itineraries, including the 51-day Tales of the South Pacific and the 35-day Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas voyages. Each of those itineraries departs from and returns to San Diego, crosses the Equator and international dateline, and stops in Kiribati and French Polynesia.

Princess and Seabourn also include Hawaii on longer cruise itineraries. In 2024, Seabourn is offering a  145-day cruise from Los Angeles to Athens, Greece. That itinerary includes port days in Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island before sailing around New Zealand and Australia en route to the Middle East and Greece. Spend one sea day cruising the Great Barrier Reef and the others treating yourself to spa days, meals with new friends, and drinks under the stars. The luxury cruise line Azamara plans to sail from  San Diego to Hawaii, Bora Bora, and Tahiti in January 2025.

Holland America in Hawaii

Holland America in Hawaii

The best Hawaii cruises for travelers with kids

If Disney and Hawaii are both on your travel list, you’re in luck. Disney plans to cruise to Hawaii in 2023 and 2024 , giving you a chance to merge your Disney dreams with your Hawaii volcano and beach dreams. The Disney Wonder is scheduled to sail this itinerary, and it’s sure to quickly win over anyone who’s a Marvel fan or grew up on Disney movies. The ship’s Oceaneer Club gives kids the chance to step in Andy's Room from Toy Story or to connect with their inner superhero in a Marvel-themed room. And like all Disney experiences, there’s a good chance you may run into your favorite characters on board.

Holland America ships have cabins that can accommodate up to five guests, big enough for the whole family. On the Holland America Koningsdam, which sails an  18-day itinerary around Hawaii, the kids club is at the top of the ship and includes three enclosed outdoor play areas. Sign up for family-friendly shore excursions or leave your kids onboard to paint, learn to cook, or play video games while you explore. There’s also special programming for kids, tweens, and teens.

The best Hawaii cruise for getting off the tourist track

If boarding a ship with thousands of strangers isn’t your idea of a vacation, UnCruise Adventures may be the cruise line for you. UnCruise itineraries are all about connecting with nature and local culture. UnCruise offers a yacht-like experience on board the 36-passenger  Safari Explorer . Sail from November through April on a seven-night itinerary that swaps touristy Oahu for Hawaii’s least developed island—Molokai. Because it’s so small, the Safari Explorer can access ports the big ships can’t and help travelers better connect with local communities. This itinerary includes a traditional evening feast in Molokai, something you won’t find on other Hawaiian cruise itineraries.

These 8 Cruises Make It Easy to Explore Hawaii on Your Next Vacation

Here are our picks for some of the best Hawaii cruises.

cruise in hawaiian islands

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state. Each island offers a different climate, attractions, environment, and style, and even on the same island, there are major variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, will want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is one way to accomplish that. You can embark from any of several ports on the West Coast (or within Hawaii itself), and the convenience of not worrying about hotel changes or local transportation is a plus. Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaii . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so picking a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, and we hope this list will inspire you to get started.

The next two days are spent in Lahaina, Maui, home base for a cruise among dolphins and whales, a plantation tour, or a traditional luau. Hawaii cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

Hawaii and cruising seem like a match made in heaven. You can experience all the beaches, water sports, lush scenic areas and Polynesian culture without having to settle for just one island — or deal with the hassle of flying between them.

In addition, you get a convenient home base to leave your stuff, enjoy evening entertainment without a drive and linger over dinner without worrying how much the bill will come to.

However, it's not all paradise in the Hawaii cruise world because itineraries are limited. Why? U.S. government regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships from sailing between U.S. ports without visiting a foreign port.

Because most cruise ships are flagged in another country, they cannot offer interisland cruises. Only two lines currently offer those. The rest must sail long cruises at least one-way, if not round trip, from the west coast of North America.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If a Hawaii cruise sounds like the perfect getaway to you, you'll want to read up on which lines offer which types of itineraries, as well as which islands and ports you must visit.

Here, we've gathered all the information you need to know to choose the perfect Aloha State sailing for your travel style, budget and allotted vacation time.

Why cruise to Hawaii?

cruise in hawaiian islands

I probably don't need to convince anyone why Hawaii is an amazing vacation destination. It has everything — gorgeous beaches, fabulous snorkeling and diving spots, scenic hiking trails, fascinating local culture and history, delicious cuisine, renowned resorts and golf courses, and plentiful waterfalls and rainbows.

Why should you cruise instead of booking a hotel or resort stay on land? The main reason is to sample more islands.

Most travelers stick to one, possibly two islands, during a Hawaii vacation. If you want to sample the highlights of several islands, from Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii, to Kauai's Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast, it's much simpler to do that from a cruise ship.

Additionally, lodging prices in Hawaii can be high due to its popularity as a vacation destination. Restaurants are also more expensive than on the mainland because many staples have to be shipped in from afar.

On a cruise, you're free to sample Hawaiian cuisine during your time in port, but can take as many meals as you want on board, many of which are already covered in your cruise fare.

When do cruises go to Hawaii?

cruise in hawaiian islands

You can sail to Hawaii year-round, but the itinerary options vary based on the month you choose. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only major cruise line to offer year-round, weeklong cruises.

If you're looking for a longer itinerary, sailing round trip from the west coast of North America, or a small-ship adventure cruise, you'll have the biggest selection of cruises between October and April.

The beginning and end of the Alaska season in the spring and fall is when you'll find one-way repositioning cruises either between Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia, or Seattle, or from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the South Pacific, stopping in Hawaii along the way.

The summer offers the fewest Hawaii cruise options.

Best Hawaii itineraries

cruise in hawaiian islands

Cruises to Hawaii fall into three categories: weeklong interisland cruises, round-trip cruises sailing to/from the West Coast and one-way repositioning cruises.

The best cruise for you depends on how much vacation time you have, how many islands you want to visit, whether you're looking for overnight port stays and how you feel about multiple sea days in a row.

Interisland cruises

The best Hawaii itinerary in my opinion is Norwegian Cruise Line's seven-night round-trip Honolulu sailings on Pride of America. The U.S.-flagged ship is the only big ship able to sail interisland itineraries without calling on a foreign port.

The itinerary features two-day overnight visits to Maui and Kauai and stops in both Kona and Hilo on the Big Island, as well as scenic cruising along Kauai's famed Napali Coast. It's easy to book pre- or post-cruise stays in Honolulu to explore places like Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead Crater and Pearl Harbor.

For a completely different interisland cruise, UnCruise Adventures offers a more off-the-beaten-path, adventure-focused sailing on the 36-passenger Safari Explorer.

It also visits Maui and the island of Hawaii, as well as the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. Expect lots of water sports and nature-based outings, and daily plans that can change due to the weather or a whale sighting. These expedition cruises run from November to April.

Round-trip Hawaii cruises from the West Coast

Most of the major cruise lines offering seasonal Hawaii cruises — such as Carnival, Princess and Holland America — offer 14- to 18-night round-trip itineraries from West Coast ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco, in California; Seattle; and Vancouver. These sailings run from the fall into the spring. Some lines offer just a few round trips while others offer months of Hawaii cruises.

The itineraries all follow a similar pattern: A four-day Pacific Ocean crossing, daily port stops in three or four Hawaii ports (occasionally with an overnight), another five days at sea, then a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, on the way home. If you're sailing from Vancouver, expect five days for the crossing and no visit to Mexico.

You may find some longer grand voyages sailing round trip from North America to Hawaii plus other South Pacific destinations. For example, Holland America offers some epic 35- to 51-night cruises round trip from San Diego

These Hawaii cruises are best for retirees, who have the time to enjoy leisurely ocean crossings on either end of the trip.

Repositioning cruises

The final type of Hawaii cruise is the one-way repositioning sailing, typically offered when ships are heading to or leaving Alaska. The cruise line schedules these sailings to swing by Hawaii on their way to the South Pacific or Australia or perhaps before the ship begins Mexico cruises from southern California or transits the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.

The shorter options, such as 10- and 11-night Hawaii cruises offered by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, sail between Vancouver and Honolulu, leaving you to book a one-way flight to or from Hawaii. Longer one-way sailings from upscale brands, such as Oceania, Seabourn and Silversea, will traverse the Pacific Ocean between Tahiti (or another far-flung island) and Vancouver or Seattle.

The shorter, one-way sailings are a good compromise for travelers who don't want to take a full two weeks or can't imagine 10 days at sea on one vacation but do want some relaxing time on the ship. They also allow pre- or post-cruise stays in Hawaii. The longer one-off journeys are more for folks wanting to explore a wide swath of the Pacific, with Hawaii being a small part of that deep dive.

Best Hawaii cruise lines

cruise in hawaiian islands

It's no surprise that I find Norwegian Cruise Line to be one of the best Hawaii cruise lines because it offers a unique product that's a reasonable vacation length for most people and really allows its guests to experience many of Hawaii's highlights.

Princess Cruises is definitely the leader in the two-week, round-trip Hawaii cruise department, offering more sailings out of more homeports than any other line. Carnival , Holland America and Viking also offer this type of sailing, but not as frequently. Holland America is a great choice for round-trip sailings that explore deep into the South Pacific.

Sister lines Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean are good bets for those hybrid one-way cruises from the West Coast to Hawaii.

Seabourn , Silversea and Oceania offer upscale accommodations, fine dining and multiple fare inclusions for travelers looking to journey in style across the Pacific Ocean, stopping in Hawaii along the way. Seabourn and Silversea feature smaller ships, more fare inclusions and higher prices than Oceania.

UnCruise Adventures is the line for travelers who want to get off the beaten path on a small ship with a flexible itinerary. These sailings are perfect for active folks who want to get up close to nature. You don't have to be a true cruiser to love UnCruise, but you do need a large budget, as intimate adventures don't come cheap.

Things to do in Hawaii

cruise in hawaiian islands

Whether you're looking for utter relaxation or an adrenaline rush, you'll find plenty of things to do in Hawaii. The islands have much to offer families, couples and friends of all ages.

Obviously, a top attraction is Hawaii's many beaches. You can plop down in the sand on beautifully manicured strands of white sand or find more rugged volcanic black sand beaches. Look for beach parks with sheltered swimming areas for families or find a secluded beach away from popular tourist areas. Some beaches can have strong currents or rough seas during certain times of the year, so always exercise caution when swimming.

Water sports are also a big draw, whether that's surfing Hawaii's waves or snorkeling with green turtles in Maui. Kayak out to sea or along Kauai's Wailua River, or try your hand at kite-surfing or stand-up paddleboarding. For a more chill afternoon out on the waves, consider a whale-watching cruise, sunset sail or scenic boat ride along the Napali Coast.

Nature lovers can find a variety of hikes within lush green forests or along the rocky landscape of the Waimea Canyon. Maui's road to Hana is a must-do if you like twisty roads and cascading waterfalls. Watch the sun rise or set, bike down the extinct Haleakala volcano, or visit a live one at Volcanoes National Park near Hilo on the island of Hawaii.

Many travelers enjoy learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Attend a luau where you can feast on Hawaiian cuisine and enjoy music, dancing and fire play. Some take place on plantations where you can discover more about local agriculture. Or, stop by historic attractions, such as Honolulu's Iolani Palace or the Big Island's city of refuge, to learn about the ancient Polynesian culture or the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Best Hawaii cruise ports

cruise in hawaiian islands

The islands of Hawaii only offer a few cruise ports for ships to visit. (UnCruise Adventures is the exception, calling in a few smaller places that the big ships can't go.) All of them are top-notch, so it's hard to say which one is the best overall. Certainly, some ports are better for different types of activities.

The following Hawaii ports are the ones commonly found on cruise itineraries.

Honolulu, Oahu

Honolulu is known for Pearl Harbor, where you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial Museum, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, a submarine museum and an aviation museum. Cruisers can catch some rays at Waikiki Beach or hike the Diamond Head crater.

Learn about Hawaiian history at the Mauna 'Ala royal mausoleum and the Iolani Palace, or Hawaiian culture at a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center. You can also take a tour to Oahu's North Shore. Oahu is the turn-around port for Pride of America, so travelers should consider a pre- or post-cruise stay to see the sights.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

The small but mighty Kauai is one of the best Hawaii ports for outdoor, nature-based adventure. Get your cameras out for the rocky landscapes of the Waimea Canyon and the breathtaking cliffs of the Napali Coast. If you like hiking or kayaking, you've come to the right island, but you can also take it easy on any number of nearby beaches.

Take a riverboat along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, or hop a tour bus to see where many of your favorite movies were filmed. It's also a good spot for a luau if your ship stays in port late enough.

Hilo, Hawaii

The Big Island is the only island offering two major ports for cruise ships: Hilo on the east coast and Kona on the west. Hilo is the jumping-off point to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike through a lava tube or watch steam venting from the still-active volcano.

The area is also home to numerous waterfalls you can visit, such as Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls, as well as black-sand beaches. Kayak or snorkel in Hilo Bay, or — for something different — visit the Volcano Winery to sample vintages made both with grapes and local fruits.

Related: How to choose the best Hawaiian island for you

Kona, Hawaii

The second cruise port on the island of Hawaii, Kona is one of the best ports for visiting a coffee plantation and sampling local Hawaiian coffee. For travelers more interested in ancient Polynesian history, the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, the site of an old city of refuge, is a fascinating place to visit. Otherwise, Kona offers plenty of beaches, snorkeling opportunities and boat and submarine tours.

Lahaina or Kahului, Maui

Maui also has two cruise ports, but they serve the same area and attractions. The difference is that Kahului is in an industrial area near the airport. Cruise ships dock there, but you'll need to take a tour or other transportation to see the sights.

Lahaina is a major tourist destination for its restaurants, shops and boat tours, but ships must anchor and transport passengers to shore via tender boats.

Must-sees on Maui include the extinct volcano Haleakala (for sunset or sunrise visits or bike rides down the steep slopes), the twisty road to Hana with its waterfall views and many gorgeous white-sand beaches. Maui is the best Hawaii cruise port for whale watching in season or snorkeling in its clear waters. Visit the Maui Ocean Center to check out more sea life while staying dry.

When to book a Hawaii cruise

cruise in hawaiian islands

The earlier you book a Hawaii cruise, the better. That's because the cruise lines offer comparatively few Hawaii sailings as compared to Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, for example.

Norwegian Cruise Line bases only one ship in the region; other lines only sail to the islands seasonally. Booking early will not only guarantee you get the cabin type you want on the sail date you prefer, but may also get you the lowest prices and promotional booking bonuses (i.e. free stuff). In addition, unless you live on the West Coast, a Hawaii cruise will require a long flight either to California or Honolulu, so you'll want plenty of time to find an airfare deal or available award seat.

Related: When is the best time to book a cruise?

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise

cruise in hawaiian islands

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise depends on which cruise you're taking. If you're on a weeklong sailing on casual NCL, you can skip the dressy clothes and prioritize casual outfits that work with whatever beachy or sporty excursions you've got planned in Hawaii. Sun hats, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and water-friendly shoes are all must-pack items. Don't forget your camera (or waterproof case for your cellphone) and binoculars for whale watching.

Travelers on a longer Hawaii sailing on a line like Princess will want to bring nicer clothes for dinners on board, as well as plenty of activities for all those sea days. That could include books or an e-reader, a packable board game, a knitting project or a journal. UnCruise passengers should pack hiking boots, moisture-wicking athletic clothing, plenty of swimsuits and waterproof bags to protect their gear.

Related: Cruise packing list: The ultimate guide to what to pack for a cruise

Bottom line

A cruise can be an ideal way to explore multiple Hawaiian islands in one trip and save on costs such as dinner and car rentals.

However, unlike in other cruise regions, travelers are limited in the itineraries and times of the year they can sail. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is a great way to visit the islands in just a week, but fans of leisurely trips with lots of sea days should look at round-trip cruises from California.

Once you've decided how you want to cruise Hawaii, you can seek out the best cruise fares so you're ready to say "Aloha!" to an incredible vacation when the right deal pops up.

Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

Kahului is located in Maui County on the west side of the island of Maui between Wailuku and Lower Paia along Highway 32 near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Pacific Ocean.Kahului is heart of Maui, and the only deep water port for the island. This is where the major cruise and container ships come in, the main airport, Kahului Airport is located here also. Kahului has great variety in shopping and services, but lacks the variety of fine restaurants that Lahaina has, although some of the local dining favorites reside here. There are few hotels and resorts in Kahului, there is however, a new golf course. There are four major shopping malls with the largest being the Kaahumanu Mall. Most of 'industrial' Maui is located in Kahului. It is here where one of the main power plants is located, most of Maui's service oriented businesses, and the greatest variety in shopping. Everything from small local stores, catering to residents, to large discount stores such as K-Mart and Costco. Kahului has grown a lot in the past few years, unfortunately the infrastructure has not. As a result traffic is congested most of the working day. The traffic can be especially heavy while exiting the Kahului Airport area. Rush hour traffic is especially bad, both in the afternoons and evenings, traffic from Paia and Upcountry bottleneck at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. Allow a little extra time for travelling through this area of Maui.

cruise in hawaiian islands

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Kailua/Hawaii

cruise in hawaiian islands

Historians and researchers believe that it is possible that Kailua was home to Hawaiian families at least 1,500 years ago. The earliest settlers are thought to have lived fished and played on the slopes surrounding Kawainui Marsh. A Bishop Museum report on archaeological excavations of the marshland concludes that when the marsh slopes were first occupied about 500 A.D., agriculture was not possible. The report said that early Hawaiian occupants of Kailua apparently lived beside a lagoon or bay open to the sea hundreds of yards shoreside of today's shoreline. In the 16th century, Kailua attracted the ali'i giving birth to many rich Hawaiian legends, some of which may be found in written and oral reminiscences in Hawaii State Libraries. Many legends were born here including the menehune who were known for working at night in Kaiwainui Marsh and mo'o who took the shape of a large lizard that attracted fish. Kailua was densely populated before the arrival of Captain Cook and was the ancient capital of O'ahu's kings. The biggest event in Kailua and the entire Windward side was in 1795 when King Kamehameha I conquered O'ahu in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The King granted Kaiwainui Marsh and old Kailua, which included large freshwater fish ponds and saltwater ponds at Mokapu, to the warriors and chiefs that had helped him. The land was used in various forms for agriculture from sugarcane to rice to taro and eventually was used primarily for cattle raising. Kailua was a sleepy town of barely 3,000 in the 1940s. However, the events of World War II changed the appearance of Kailua. Kaneohe Ranch sold portions of land to the government for expansion of the Navy base and the Army's Fort Hase. Finally in 1942, Kaneohe Ranch closed down its cattle raising operations entirely, freeing thousands of acres for post-war development. Harold K.L. Castle, owner of Kaneohe Ranch, donated the land for many churches, schools, and for a new hospital. A new four-lane highway, tunneling through the Ko'olau Mountains, was completed in the late 1950s. In 1946, a small Liberty House (now Macy's) shop opened with three employees and upgraded to a full-line department store in 1953 with nearly 50 employees. The first bowling alley, a branch office of the telephone company, and the very first supermarket in Hawaii opened in Kailua in 1947. By the end of the 1950s, Hawaii had become a state and Kailua became the official postal designation. Castle Hospital opened in 1963. By 1960 the population was up to 24,400. The town has grown more than 100 percent since 1960 when its population was 24,402. It has a compact, easy-to-shop business district surrounded by mostly single-family homes. By 1992 50,000 residents encompassed a central urban core with surrounding residential areas.

What Cruise Lines Go To Hawaii: A Comprehensive Overview

' src=

Save money on your next flight

Skyscanner is the world’s leading flight search engine, helping you find the cheapest flights to destinations all over the world.

Dreaming of a Hawaiian cruise vacation surrounded by spectacular volcanoes, golden sand beaches, and azure waters? You’re not alone – Hawaii remains one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.

If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer to your question: The main cruise lines that offer regular itineraries to Hawaii include Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America, and Carnival Cruise Line . Several luxury lines like Crystal Cruises also visit the islands occasionally.

In this comprehensive guide, we will provide details on the major cruise lines and ships that cruise to Hawaii, the different Hawaiian island cruise itineraries they offer, when the best time to take a Hawaii cruise is, and tips to get the best deals on Hawaii cruises.

The Top Cruise Lines and Ships Sailing to Hawaii

Norwegian cruise line and pride of america.

The Pride of America operated by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is specially designed for sailings around the Hawaiian Islands. As the only large cruise ship registered in the U.S., federal regulations allow it to operate inter-island itineraries without calling on a foreign port.

Boasting a capacity of 2,186 passengers, Pride of America offers 7-night inter-island cruises that include stops on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. With Freestyle Cruising, there is no set dining time and guests can choose from up to 10 included dining venues.

Princess Cruises and Grand/Star Princess

Princess Cruises’ 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 2,600-passenger Star Princess sail round-trip from San Francisco or Los Angeles on 15-night Hawaiian Island cruises.

Ports of call include Hilo, Honolulu, Kauai, and Maui. On board, guests can enjoy specialty restaurants, Broadway-style theater shows, adults-only Sanctuary area, and Movies Under the Stars outdoor cinema.

Holland America and Multiple Ships

Several Holland America ships offer Hawaiian itineraries, including the 2,104-passenger Eurodam. These cruises are typically 14-18 nights round-trip from San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver.

In addition to the gorgeous Hawaii ports, sailings visit popular spots like Ensenada Mexico. Holland America is known for exceptional food, enrichment programs, and wraparound decks perfect for whale watching.

Carnival Cruise Line and Multiple Ships

Carnival Cruise Line offers occasional Hawaii itineraries on ships like Carnival Miracle from San Diego and Carnival Spirit from Vancouver. These are typically 15-night sailings with visits to Maui, Honolulu, Kona and Hilo.

On board, fun activities include waterslides, mini golf, casinos, Punchliner Comedy Club and lively deck parties. Carnival ships offer a range of dining and bar venues from casual to upscale.

Luxury Cruise Lines Occasionally Visiting Hawaii

Upscale lines like Crystal Cruises , Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Viking may have an annual sailing to Hawaii as part of a positioning cruise or around-the-world voyage. Fares are higher but include drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities andmultiple specialty restaurants.

Hawaii Cruise Itineraries Offered

7-day inter-island hawaii cruises.

A spectacular way to experience the Hawaiian islands is via a week-long inter-island cruise. These voyages visit the four main islands of Hawaii, stopping at world-class destinations like Honolulu on Oahu; Lahaina on Maui; Hilo and Kona on the Big Island; and Nawiliwili on Kauai.

Depending on the cruise line and itinerary, you’ll get to enjoy 2-4 ports across these iconic locales.

Some key highlights may include exploring the vibrant city of Honolulu, hiking the scenic Na Pali Coast, witnessing lava flows on the Big Island, road tripping along Maui’s gorgeous coastline, and more.

The major cruise lines like Norwegian, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Princess offer quality Hawaii cruises in this 7-day format.

10-14 day Hawaii Cruises Combining Islands

For travelers who want to experience Hawaii’s top ports with added destinations, 10-14 day cruises are a great choice. These extended Island-hopping journeys combine visits across Hawaii while also adding ports in Mexico, California or on South Pacific islands.

Popular combo destinations include the Mexican Riviera with stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo; sailing to Los Angeles or San Diego in California; and visiting Fanning Island or Samoa in the South Pacific. These provide a taste of Hawaiian culture alongside other regional influences.

According to industry reports, multi-destination Hawaii cruises are surging in popularity, with a projected 14% growth in 2023. Travelers appreciate the convenience of unpacking once while island hopping across this gorgeous region.

Longer Hawaii Cruises with Other Destinations

In addition to 7-14 day options focused heavily on Hawaii, some remarkable 15+ day journeys incorporate Hawaii among a variety of exotic stops in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Bora Bora, and beyond. These extended adventures across the South Pacific are the stuff that dreams are made of!

A sample 19 day cruise could include Honolulu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai alongside 6 days exploring Australia and stops in Samoa or Fiji. The cruising experience combined with tropical destinations creates memories to last a lifetime.

No matter if you select a 7-day, 10-14 day or 15+ day Hawaii cruise, you’ll be treated to stunning scenery, rich culture, fine dining, exciting entertainment and awesome adventures along the way. Let the spirit of Aloha wash over you on your next escape to paradise!

Best Time to Take a Hawaiian Islands Cruise

Year-round cruising but weather varies.

Hawaii enjoys warm tropical temperatures all year, so cruises operate year-round. However, weather patterns change with the seasons. Trade winds blow from the northeast from May to October, keeping things cooler. From October through April, Kona winds come from the southwest, raising temperatures.

Rainfall varies too, with the winter months tending to be rainier.

Peak Season: Summer and Early Fall

The peak cruising season for Hawaii runs from approximately June through September. This summertime period offers reliably warm and sunny weather. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, over 40% of visitors come during these months. * As crowds swell, so do prices for both cruises and hotels.

Early fall still sees great weather before the rainy season kicks in.

Cheaper Fares in Spring and Fall Shoulders

The spring (March to May) and fall (October to November) shoulder seasons offer a nice compromise – fewer tourists, lower prices, and still favorable weather most of the time. You’ll avoid the worst of the crowds and save money on your cruise. Just be prepared for occasional rain showers.

Avoid the Rainiest Months of Winter

If you really want to save money, look at winter cruise deals. But the weather turns dicier from December through February. Hawaii’s rainy season brings more frequent rain, choppy seas, and even the rare storm.

Whale watching activities peak with humpback migration, but weigh the weather risks vs. rewards.

Tips for Finding the Best Hawaii Cruise Deals

Book early for best selection of cabins.

Booking a Hawaii cruise early, ideally 4-6 months in advance, gives you access to the widest selection of cabin categories and locations on the ship (CruiseTimetables) . Last minute deals sometimes pop up, but choices are more limited. Booking early also locks in price protection before any increases.

Be Flexible with Departure Dates

If your schedule permits, look at Hawaii cruises leaving on different days of the week and from various ports. Mid-week departures are generally several hundred dollars cheaper per person . You may also save money departing from LA, San Diego or Vancouver rather than traditional port cities.

Watch for Sales and Discount Promotions

Many cruise lines offer promotions around holidays like New Year’s, President’s Day, or Black Friday. Sign up for email alerts and check for last minute deals. Third party websites also compile and list discounted cruises to Hawaii.

Consider Repositioning Cruises

Early spring and late fall are seasons for ships to reposition between their usual routes. Repositioning cruises can mean exceptional deals on longer Hawaii itineraries since cruise lines discount empty rooms.

Compare Similar Itineraries Carefully

Itineraries, port visits, amenities offered and cruise lengths can vary greatly. Compare deals in detail to find your perfect Hawaii cruise at a great value.

With its famous beaches, majestic mountains, volcano landscapes, and welcoming culture, Hawaii remains a dream location for cruisers. By knowing the top cruise lines like NCL, Princess, and Holland America that sail there regularly, the different cruise itineraries available, when to find the best weather and prices, and tips to get deals, you can discover heavenly Hawaii by ship.

Which Hawaii island would you be most excited to explore on your upcoming cruise? The active volcanoes of the Big Island? The world famous Waikiki Beach on Oahu? Let us know if you have any other questions as you plan your Hawaii cruise vacation!

Your Hawaii Cruise Ports Depends on Your Itinerary

Where you go on your Hawaiian cruise largely depends on the cruise line and itinerary. Most cruises will visit Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, although others may only make stops at two or three islands.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line operates a year-round Hawaiian cruise that leaves from and returns to Honolulu, Oahu. After leaving Honolulu, the Pride of America visits four different ports – Kahului (Maui), Hilo (Hawaii Island), Kona (Hawaii Island), and Nawiliwili (Kauai).

It’s the only cruise that stays in Hawaii, so it’s the best option if you want to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. Plus, it has overnight stays on the Big Island, Kauai, and Maui so you can stay in a hotel or take part in early morning or late evening excursions. Plus, no sea days means more time to explore the islands!

  • Seattle, Washington
  • Vancouver, BC

Of course, these aren’t the only departure ports for cruise ships, as many long-term itineraries operate from various points around the world. Extended voyages can leave from Miami, England, or even Australia before making their way to Hawaii!

However, the majority of one to two-week Hawaiian cruises will leave from the west coast. Foreign-flagged or built ships that travel between two US ports are required to stop at a foreign country sometime during the journey (in most cases, this will be Vancouver, Canada, or Ensenada, Mexico). This is due to the Passenger Vessel Service Act (PVSA) , which aims to protect the American maritime industry.

You’ll find that most ships make these foreign country stops, except for NCL’s Pride of America. As the only ship to qualify for the PVSA , it’s allowed to travel between US ports and stay in Hawaii for the entire duration of the trip. The ship runs every week throughout the year and departs from and arrives back at Oahu’s Cruise Terminal 2, which is located in the city of Honolulu.

Because of the PVSA, the Pride of America follows a strict set of guidelines. Not only is the crew required to be 75% American, but they must also abide by US labor laws and wages, which can make voyages on this cruise more expensive than others.

What to Expect at Hawaii Cruise Ports

Because you’ll only have a limited time at each Hawaii cruise port, it’s crucial to plan out what you want to do beforehand. Should you book a shore excursion? Is it necessary to rent a car? Can you easily walk to a beach from the port? As you can see, there are lots of questions that need to be answered before you disembark!

To help make your stay on land as smooth as possible, we recommend getting our Cruising Hawaii Guide . It’s packed with insider tips on what to do on those days when you’re docked.

This includes over 90 shore excursions on Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island, including snorkel spots, volcano hikes, waterfall treks, and more! We’ll also share how to get around (taxi, Uber, or car rental) and a few self-guided excursion days to make the most of your time here. You will waste no time when you land at these Hawaii cruise ports.

Hawaii Cruise Ports: Your Ports of Call

Oahu (honolulu) cruise terminal.

As the starting and/or ending point for many Hawaiian cruises, Honolulu is likely to be included on your itinerary. The Pier 2 Cruise Terminal is centrally located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, making it a good jumping-off point for exploring the most popular attractions on Oahu.

If Honolulu is at the beginning or end of your trip, then we recommend spending at least two or three days here. We recommend doing this prior to your cruise to adjust for the jet lag and you can tick off some sights while also having downtime for a few lazy beach days.

Best Honolulu shore excursions :

  • Visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona
  • Take a sightseeing tour of the entire island
  • Learn how to surf on Waikiki Beach
  • Sail on a traditional wooden catamaran

Maui, Hawaii Cruise Ports

Kahului Harbor on the northern coast of the island is the main port of Maui. As a cargo facility, there isn’t much to do around the harbor, so we strongly recommend booking a tour or having a plan of action of what to do when you arrive.

The harbor is a 10-minute drive to the Kahului airport, which makes it easy to rent a car if you would like to drive around. And because of the port’s central location, it’s easy to reach most of Maui’s attractions in under an hour.

The second port on Maui is Lahaina Harbor (a tender port). At the moment, this terminal is closed after the devastating fires that ripped through Maui on August 8th, 2023. Because of the damage, Lahaina Harbor is no longer in operation for incoming cruises. While some cruise lines list Lahaina as a port of call for some 2024 departures, it’s unknown if it will be up and running at that time.

Best Maui shore excursions :

  • Drive (or be driven) through the Road to Hana
  • Snorkel the Molokini Crater
  • Marvel at the sunrise over Halekalani

Island of Hawaii Cruise Ports

Most ships make two stops on the Big Island, giving you ample time to see different things on both coasts. The Port of Hilo is located on the eastern side and is the gateway to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park. However, this is also the rainy side of the island, which means you can also expect to see lush rainforests and beautiful, cascading waterfalls!

Kailua Pier (a tender port) is situated on the western side of the island. From here, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from beautiful beaches, incredible snorkeling, and tons of fun water sport opportunities! There’s also a charming town center within walking distance from the port with some great restaurants and bars.

Depending on your cruise operator, it’s possible to spend a night on land while the ship moves between ports. Doing so does cost extra (you’ll need to book a hotel for the night), but it allows you to take advantage of full-day tours, early-morning excursions, and even late-night or evening tours.

Best Island of Hawaii shore excursions :

  • Hike Volcanoes National Park
  • Sample coffee on a Kona coffee farm tour
  • Snorkel with Manta Rays at night
  • Go stargazing on Mauna Kea
  • Admire humpback whales on a whale watching tour (from December to March)

Kauai, Hawaii Cruise Port

If your cruise is going to Kauai, it will dock at Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue. Although its a bit outside of town, you can easily reach other popular destinations around the island by booking a tour, renting a car, or hiring a cab.

Places like Poipu and Wailua are close by, while Waimea Canyon and Hanalei are a bit further out and require more planning.

Some ships, like NCL’s Pride of America, spend two days docked at Kauai. With more time here than other ports of call, you’ll be able to see much more of the Garden Isle. It also means you can book early morning, late evening, or even full-day excursions.

Best Kauai shore excursions :

  • See the unspoiled Napali Coast
  • Hike the lush Waimea Canyon
  • Go mountain tubing through the Hawaiian backcountry

Holland America Line Opens Bookings for 2025-2026 Hawaii and Panama Canal Voyages

Holland America Line is setting sail for adventure with the opening of bookings for its 2025-2026 Panama Canal and Hawaii cruises. With a focus on longer voyages and destination immersion, the premium cruise line is set to offer sailings out of five North American homeports on five separate ships for the 2025-2026 season.

For the specified season, Holland America Line is offering six different Panama Canal cruises. The upcoming season’s offering will feature several firsts, including the addition of the port of Acajutla, El Salvador on most Panama Canal itineraries and the inaugural transit of the canal by the Pinnacle-Class ship Koningsdam. For those looking to cross the canal aboard Zuiderdam, the 2025-2026 season will bring new departures from Miami .

These cruises, ranging from 15 to 22 days, provide guests with the opportunity to embark on shorter or more extended journeys, all while experiencing the wonders of the iconic Central America waterway.

"We know a Panama Canal transit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience many of our guests are seeking, and by adding Acajutla to select voyages, we're making it even more memorable. Guests can discover the 'Pompeii of the Americas' with a shore excursion to Joya de Cerén archaeological site, where they'll explore a Mayan farming village remarkably preserved under volcanic ash," said Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line's chief commercial officer. "With four different departure cities, there are so many different ways to experience the Panama Canal aboard one of our ships.

In addition to Panama Canal adventures, the 2025-2026 season marks the debut of Holland America Line's ship Nieuw Amsterdam in Hawaii. Sailing roundtrip itineraries from San Diego, California, Nieuw Amsterdam will be joined by Koningsdam and Zaandam in sailing island-hopping itineraries, almost all of which include an overnight in the Aloha State’s iconic capital city of Honolulu.

Holland America’s selection of Hawaii and Panama Canal cruises both range in duration from 15 to 22 days and are available from October 2025 through April 2026. Cruises to both of these colorful equatorial destinations showcase a blend of natural wonders and manmade marvels, from breathtaking cascading waterfalls and verdant tropical landscapes to ancient Mayan ruins and the world-famous locks of the Panama Canal.

Immersive shore excursions offer cultural insights into the destinations' rich heritage and natural beauty. Meanwhile, the diverse cuisine offered on board incorporates unique local flavors, including succulent Pacific mahi-mahi, sweet golden pineapple, fresh homemade salsa, and other regional specialties sourced directly from port to plate.

Highlights of the 2025-2026 Panama Canal Cruise Season:

  • Panama Canal cruises are aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam and Zuiderdam.
  • Cruises start or end in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Seattle, Washington; San Diego, California; or Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • Guests enjoy a daylight transit of the Panama Canal, with commentary on the open decks detailing the amazing feat of the man-made marvel.
  • Itineraries range from 15 to 22 days and include a combination of calls in Aruba, California, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Turks and Caicos.
  • Several cruises offer multiple embarkation or disembarkation options. For example, Fort Lauderdale to San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver.
  • Select Panama Canal sailings include a call at Acajutla, a new port for Holland America Line, offering excursions to remarkably preserved Mayan ruins, volcanoes, and cacao plantations, while also providing a gateway to see more of El Salvador, including San Salvador and Nahuizalco.
  • Many Panama Canal cruises include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line's award-winning private island in the Bahamas.

Highlights of the 2025-2026 Hawaii Cruise Season:

  • Cruises to Hawaii are aboard Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam and Zaandam. This will be Nieuw Amsterdam's first season in Hawaii.
  • Itineraries are roundtrip from San Diego, roundtrip from Vancouver, or from Vancouver to San Diego.
  • 17-day "Circle Hawaii" from Vancouver to San Diego visits Nawiliwili, Kahului, Hilo, Honolulu (overnight) and Kona. The 17-day roundtrip from San Diego features either an overnight or late departure from Honolulu, a call to Ensenada, Mexico, and more Hawaiian ports like Kona and Kahului.
  • 18-day "Circle Hawaii" is roundtrip from San Diego or Vancouver and calls at Kahului, Hilo, Honolulu (overnight), Nawiliwili and Kona. Roundtrip San Diego adds a call at Ensenada and roundtrip Vancouver includes Victoria, Canada.

For a limited time, guests who choose to add the ‘Have It All’ premium package—the line’s standard package of amenities, such as shore excursions, specialty dining, a Signature Beverage Package, Surf Wi-Fi and free prepaid Crew Appreciation—when booking select Panama Canal and Hawaii voyages will receive free upgrades to the Elite Beverage Package and Premium Wi-Fi.
