Frequently asked questions, methodology, best overall : booking.com.
This hotel booking site sports one of the largest numbers of hotel accommodations around the world, and guests often gravitate toward it to find a great deal. In addition to hotels, Booking.com allows guests to search for car rentals, flights, and flight and hotel packages.
Broad selection
Reviews only by those who have booked
Customer service challenges
Booking.com is an aggregator site known for its volume of hotel options at all price points, though many travelers turn to the site to compare rates on hotels around the world. The site has been known to deliver some of the lowest rates on the internet. Reviews of hotels displayed on the website are written by individuals who’ve booked and completed travel through Booking.com. It also makes a point of including taxes as part of published rates for hotels located in Europe and Asia.
In 2022, the Amsterdam-based company eliminated a few thousand call center jobs, while existing positions were outsourced, which might mean customer service challenges on the consumer end during this transition.
Best Overall , Runner-Up : Hotels.com
A bulleted list of fees and policies makes listed hotels easy to compare.
Millions of listings
Detailed reviews
You may miss out on hotel brands' loyalty programs
Hotels.com is one of the longest-running hotel listing sites in the business and publishes more than 3 million different listings in nearly 20,000 locations around the world including in cities like Cape Town, Lisbon, countries within the Caribbean, and Japan. Use its search engine to filter hotel results by category, such as by accessibility requirements—like a roll-in shower or sign-language capable staff—preferred neighborhood, and must-have amenities such as an ocean view or free airport shuttle. Search also by type of accommodations, including motels and apartments. Its app also offers an additional 10 percent off bookings.
Its collection of 10,000 VIP Access properties are cream-of-the-crop listings that have received top ratings for exceptional service by Hotels.com guests. Hotel reviews by Hotels.com guests indicate how long and what type of trip users took (business vs. leisure) for additional context.
Best for Luxury : Mr and Mrs Smith
Mr & Mrs Smith
Discerning traveler-curated boutique hotel listings include exclusive perks when you book with this site.
Listed hotels must pass vetting process
Listings across multiple continents
Limited number of listings
The U.K.-based Mr and Mrs Smith considers itself a global travel club. Guests booking through its site receive access to a curated list of more than 1,700 upscale hotels and villas throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, among other locales. Peruse listings by categories, such as child-friendly hotels, properties ideal for a honeymoon, and pet-friendly hotels.
Each Mr and Mrs Smith property must be invited into its roster after passing a strict, anonymous review by one of the company’s in-house travel specialists. Most of the listings are boutique hotels with a penchant for considered aesthetics and lots of unique touches (such as an onsite restaurant that produces its own olive oil). Many unique accommodations are offered, with options including treehouse hotels and tropical retreats with both overwater and underwater rooms.
The site offers three membership tiers. Its second and third tiers are paid options (choose to make either a monthly or an annual payment, beginning at $150 annually) and include perks like priority booking on exclusive offers, discounted access to airport lounges, and room upgrades as available.
Best Budget : Hostelworld
Hostelworld
Socially minded and budget-conscious travelers turn to this hotel booking site for affordable rates and a flexible cancellation policy—24 hours prior to arrival.
Caters to budget-focused travelers
Can plan for large groups
Lacks the depth of larger, aggregate sites
Budget travelers looking for a hostel or cheap hotel should check out Hostelworld. It lists 36,000 properties in 178 countries, with more than 13 million verified guest reviews to back them up in backpacker-friendly locales from Amsterdam and Berlin to New Zealand.
Filter results by room type (such as all-female dorms or en-suite family rooms), distance from the city center, and accommodation type. Although the site is called Hostelworld, you can also book bed and breakfasts, apartments, and campsites. Overviews of each listing are provided by the property owners and are accompanied by a Hostelworld description of the property, a summary of amenities like free WiFi or complimentary breakfast, and other travelers' reviews. Select your room type, pay a nominal deposit to reserve your room, and receive instant confirmation.
Traveling in a group of 15 or more? Use the site’s group travel bookings feature to plan your friend-cation, reunion, and more. And since hostels typically have a social, communal vibe, in 2022, Hostelworld announced its platform now offers the optional capability to interact and connect with other Hostelworld guests checking in to the same city and hostel 14 days before arrival.
Best for Spontaneous Travel : Hotel Tonight
Travelers with flexibility and those in need of last-minute accommodations find this app-first hotel booking service offers heavily discounted rooms in a pinch.
Accommodates short-term needs
Loyalty program
Still must coordinate some details directly with hotels
Need a last-minute hotel room, or have a flexible schedule and like to make travel plans as they unfold? The HotelTonight app, owned by Airbnb as of 2019, is your answer to discounted hotel rooms in a pinch (though the app will allow bookings up to 100 days in advance). Search for a hotel by date and location, and if it’s available, choose your room type. Insider tip: HotelTonight lists excess hotel room inventory, which is why you aren’t always able to select your room.
Hotels are categorized with descriptors like Hip (stylish and quirky), Charming (intimate, and can include bed and breakfasts), and Luxe (for impeccable service and impressive amenities). Its tiered loyalty program unlocks steeper discounts the more you book with the app, and its Deals offers are occasional flash sales that offer even deeper discounts if you book within a 15-minute window. Note that as of October 2022, specific requests like early check-in can’t be made within the app, so you’ll have to coordinate with the hotel directly.
Best for Membership Rewards : Marriott Bonvoy
There are 30 brands under the Marriott name and growing, and you can sign up for its free travel rewards program to begin earning points and perks.
Includes all 30 Marriott brands
Compatible with Marriott Bonvoy-branded credit cards
No access to non-Marriott hotels
If you’re booking a hotel, chances are it might be a Marriott brand property. Marriott boasts 30 brands at all price points within its portfolio, from SpringHill Suites to Design Hotels, and Westin to the Ritz-Carlton. That said, travelers should take advantage of its free loyalty program, Marriott Bonvoy. When you sign up, rack up points to climb its tiered status levels. The more you stay, the more points you earn toward perks like free upgrades, access to club lounges, late check-out, and upgraded WiFi. And the higher up in elite status one goes, the higher the percentage increase in points you receive per booking.
There are a number of ways to earn points with Marriott Bonvoy in addition to booking a hotel room, including making purchases with a Marriott-branded or partner credit card (like The Platinum card by American Express), and booking a car rental with Hertz. Note that points expire after 24 months if you do not complete at least one of a host of actions to remain eligible in the program.
Best for Social Impact : Kind Traveler
As of 2023, this hotel booking site is still arguably the only one out there with a business model that accounts for social and environmental impact.
Recommendations for nearby sites to see
Rewards charity donations
Limited to a niche market
Travelers in pursuit of peace of mind knowing their travel dollars are making a direct impact on the destination they’re visiting will enjoy perusing the hotels listed on Kind Traveler. This hotel booking site’s get-and-give model asks travelers to make a $10 donation to a charity in exchange for a dollar amount off nightly rates. Booking with Kind Traveler also means exclusive perks and amenities—for example, a reservation at pet-friendly Kimpton Armory hotel in Bozeman, Montana, includes a room upgrade and late check-out (though both perks are dependent on availability). At this property, your $10 donation goes toward funding day camp experiences for people with disabilities.
We also love that each hotel listing includes several recommendations to “do good for the day” near your selected hotel. In Bozeman, for example, Kind Traveler suggests a visit to the Emerson Center for Arts and Culture to support its art community, or a donation to No Kid Hungry Montana, an organization serving the food-insecure.
When it comes to hotel booking sites, there’s something for every type of traveler. Many of the sites key in on finding the best deals on the web, and some get super-specialized, such as presenting hotel room listings for last-minute travelers. Overall, for tons of options with an eye for affordability, Booking.com is our top pick for the best hotel booking site.
What Is the Best Hotel Booking Site?
The answer may vary depending on specific needs, but we found that Booking.com offers the broadest range of hotel properties along with ease of use and opportunities for discounts. Another aggregate listing site, Hotels.com, was a close second, and most travelers should be able to find what they need through one of those sites.
Is It Better to Book Directly With the Hotel?
It depends. If you can speak with someone at the hotel with authority to offer discounts, you may be able to negotiate a lower rate , a free room upgrade, or other amenities. However, this requires taking the time to reach out directly to hotels and the skill to negotiate such deals. If you're in a hurry or if haggling isn't your thing, a hotel booking site may be your best option.
What Is the Cheapest Site for Booking Hotels?
Most of the sites on our list allow customers to search by price. While Booking.com and Hotels.com have the largest listings and should be able to direct customers to cheap options, Hostelworld is specifically geared toward budget travelers .
What Days Are Cheapest to Book Hotels?
This is another question that depends on the details, such as the type of hotel. If it's a hotel that caters to business travelers , it's likely to be busiest during the week, meaning you might find weekend deals. However, if it's a hotel in the middle of a popular tourist destination, weekends might be the busiest time, meaning a weekday trip might fetch the best deal.
We evaluated the major (and some niche) hotel booking sites for the volume of hotel room listings, unique value propositions (such as steeper discounts for last-minute bookings), and guest reviews. We also considered travelers’ values, such as social- and environmental-impact opportunities, and budget preferences.

Travel is fun, right? But it can get expensive if you don’t know where and how to find the best deals. That’s where we can help.
Getting a great deal on a hotel room can save you hundreds of dollars. Sure, you can always reserve a hotel room on the hotel’s website, but is that the best way to do it? How about all of the popular online travel agencies (OTAs)? Which one offers the best pricing?
We’ve shown you the best websites for cheap flights , the best websites for cheap car rentals , and the best websites to book cruises . Now we’ll show you how to do the same with hotel rooms.
We’ve gone through all of the best and most popular websites (plus a few that aren’t so popular) to find out once and for all: where is the best place to book a hotel at the cheapest price?
There are lots of times when it makes sense just to keep things simple and book on the hotel’s website, whether it’s Marriott , Hilton , IHG , or any other. If you’re a member of a hotel’s loyalty program and are trying to earn or maintain elite status, you will most likely want to book direct.
By booking directly, you can take advantage of discounted member rates and will be sure to earn loyalty points and elite night credits. Many hotel chains offer promotions that allow you to earn lots of bonus points.
If you don’t book direct, the hotel may not recognize your elite status!
For example, if you have Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status and you book your room through Orbitz, you could easily miss out on your lounge access (and free breakfast) perk.
Hot Tip: If you hold elite status with a hotel, it’s generally best to book direct. In addition to not earning points and elite night credits when booking through an OTA, your elite status might not be honored by the hotel.
Kayak is not an OTA; it’s a metasearch engine for travel deals. This site will look at all the other sites and show you where the best deals are.
One of the things to love about Kayak, in addition to the great filtering options at the left of the screen, is the map feature.
On the search results page, you will see a map on the upper left-hand side of the screen. When you click on it, you will get a detailed map of your destination city, including hotel locations as well as popular areas for eating, sightseeing, shopping, and nightlife. Each dot on the map represents a hotel. You can click on any of them for more details about the hotel and price comparisons.
You can also use the price slider to narrow your search to only inexpensive options.
Also, keep an eye out for Pricebreakers . These are opaque fare deals, which means you won’t know all of your reservation details until after you book. When searching for a cheap hotel on Kayak, you can select Pricebreakers in the filtering options for your search.
You’ll then see deals that give you the price and 3 hotel possibilities, but you won’t know exactly which hotel you’ll get until after it’s booked.
Pros and Cons of Kayak
- Pricebreaker deals
- Kayak doesn’t always show the price on the hotel’s website which can often be cheaper
Hot Tip: For more information and how to find great deals on hotels, flights, car rentals, vacation packages, cruises, and more, check out our in-depth guide to Kayak .
We’ve shown you how to save money on flights by booking through Expedia , but how does this OTA compare when booking a hotel room?
One thing that makes Expedia unique is its rewards program, One Key Rewards . It’s free to join and allows you to earn and redeem OneKeyCash on travel.
Pros and Cons of Expedia
- One Key Rewards program (which is also used by Hotels.com and Vrbo)
- Members-only deals
- You will not earn loyalty points or elite night credits on the hotel’s own rewards program
- While most bookings are refundable, some are not; pay attention to the terms of your booking before completing your purchase
Hot Tip: While you won’t earn points through the hotel’s loyalty program when you book through Expedia, you can earn credit card points. Look for cards that earn points in the general “travel category,” like the Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card , the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , or the Citi Premier ® Card , all of which earn 3x points on hotels.
Searching for a hotel on Priceline is straightforward, and prices are similar to other OTAs.
One of the areas where Priceline can offer a deep discount is through its Express Deals. These opaque bookings keep details of the hotel secret until the booking is complete. These are prepaid, nonrefundable, and nontransferable bookings, so if your plans aren’t concrete, it’s best to avoid this type of booking.
These Express Deals also have a much more generous best-price guarantee than standard bookings (for VIP members). When booking a traditional hotel room through Priceline, you will receive a refund of the price difference if you find a better price within 24 hours of booking.
However, if you book an Express Deal and find a better price anytime up to midnight before you travel, you will get a 200% refund of the price difference!
The reservations must be identical in all aspects, and the rate must be available to the general public (no member rates) to qualify.
If you like the idea of Express Deals but want a little more certainty, check out Pricebreakers . These opaque bookings will show you 3 hotel options before you book. You still won’t know which one you’ll get until after you book, but you’re guaranteed to get 1 of the 3 options.
The last thing you’ll want to know about Priceline is that it has a loyalty program called Priceline VIP . This free program comes with 4 levels of membership offering perks like best price guarantees, hotel discounts, and Express Deal coupons.
Hot Tip: If your plans are flexible and you are comfortable booking an unknown hotel, Priceline Express Deals and Pricebreakers can certainly save you some big bucks!
Pros and Cons of Priceline
- Priceline VIP
- Express Deals and Pricebreakers
- You won’t earn hotel loyalty points or elite night credits when booking through Priceline
Hot Tip: For more information about finding the best deals and saving money, check out our complete guide to booking travel with Priceline .
Momondo is an easy-to-use travel metasearch engine that sorts through deals on other websites to help you find the best price. Once you find a deal on Momondo, you’ll be transferred to a booking website (an online travel agency or a hotel’s website) to book. You won’t ever actually book anything on Momondo’s website.
Pros and Cons of Momondo
- The easy-to-use interface shows you prices from lots of websites at one time
- There’s no loyalty program
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed guide to using Momondo .
Booking.com is an easy-to-use site where you can search for and book hotels, hostels, B&Bs, apartments, and vacation homes.
One thing that stands out about this site is its generous low-price guarantee. If you find a lower advertised price for the same reservation available to the public (not a member or special rate), Booking.com will refund the difference up to 24 hours before your check-in date . The offer needs to be online and available at the time Booking.com checks.
Another thing to keep an eye out for is the Genius discount. When a room type is marked as Genius discount available , you’ll save 10% off the base price by logging in to your account. We’ve tested this, and sure enough, the price was adjusted just by logging in.
In addition to discounts, the Genius Loyalty Program offers perks like free breakfast and room upgrades. There are 3 levels to the Genius program based on the number of stays you complete in a 2 year period.
Pros and Cons of Booking.com
- Genius Loyalty Program
- Generous price-match guarantee
- Option to book non-traditional accommodations like hostels or B&Bs
- You won’t earn loyalty points or elite night credits from the hotel’s rewards program
Hot Tip: For lots more information, check out our definitive guide to Booking.com .
One of the best things about Hotels.com is its rewards program, One Key Rewards. It allows you to earn and use points (called OneKeyCash) through Hotels.com and its partner sites, Expedia and Vrbo.
If you have a Hotels.com account, be sure to log in to access member pricing, which saves an average of 15%.
Unfortunately, as with most OTAs, you won’t be able to earn loyalty points or elite nights with the hotel’s program when booking through Hotels.com. If you generally aren’t loyal to a single brand or don’t have hotel elite status, this probably doesn’t need to be a factor in your decision of where to book.
Hot Tip: You will not earn hotel points or elite night credits for nights booked through an OTA.
Pros and Cons of Hotels.com
- One Key Rewards program
- Members-only pricing
- You have to pay taxes and fees on reward nights
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our guide to booking travel and saving money with Hotels.com .
Orbitz is another easy-to-use OTA with a strong in-house loyalty program. You can earn Orbucks on hotels, flights, travel packages, and activities.
The Orbucks earning rate is much better for hotels than flights, and Orbucks can only be redeemed for hotels . The only catch is generally, you can only earn Orbucks on prepaid hotel stays.
- Earn 3% Orbucks for hotel stays booked on a desktop
- Earn 4% Orbucks for hotel stays booked on the Orbitz app
Orbitz has its own version of elite status that can earn benefits like Wi-Fi and breakfast at select hotels after only 4 stays per year. After 12 stays per year, you’ll earn Platinum status, which comes with benefits like a TSA PreCheck application credit (a $78 value).
While Orbitz’s prices are in line with other OTAs, some of the ongoing benefits it offers might make it a great choice for the casual traveler .
However, if you can stay consistent with a single hotel brand, booking directly with the hotel to receive elite benefits might be a better deal.
Another way Orbitz can save you money on a hotel is if you book a hotel and flight together. When searching for a 7-night hotel stay in San Francisco plus a flight separately or as a bundle, the bundle saved over $100!
Pros and Cons of Orbitz
- Orbitz Rewards program
- Vacation packages
- You can only earn Orbucks on prepaid hotel stays
- You won’t earn hotel loyalty points or elite night credits when booking through Orbitz
Hot Tip: Learn more in our detailed guide to booking travel with Orbitz .
Hotwire has been around a long time and is probably the go-to OTA for many travelers, but is it the best place to book your next hotel stay if you’re looking for the cheapest price?
If you have some flexibility or aren’t particular about the exact hotel you stay in, Hotwire’s Hot Rate hotels could be a way to save you some money. These are opaque bookings, which means you won’t know the exact hotel until after the booking is complete. However, you’ll be able to see the hotel’s rating, neighborhood, amenities, Tripadvisor ratings, and the exact hotel the person previous to you got.
Hot Tip: Hotwire Hot Rate hotels could save you money. These are bookings in which you won’t know the exact hotel until after the booking is complete, so these properties are best for travelers with some flexibility.
Another way to save some money when booking through Hotwire is by booking a vacation package. Booking a hotel and flight together can save hundreds of dollars. To take advantage of this, go to the Vacations tab in the top search menu.
Pros and Cons of Hotwire
- Hot Rate Hotels
- Hotel chains, including Marriott and Hyatt , offer discounted member rates, and you won’t be able to see these on Hotwire
Hot Tip: For more information about booking travel and saving money with this platform, check out our complete guide to Hotwire .
American Express offers more than just credit cards. AmexTravel.com is a travel portal operated by American Express, and it operates much like an OTA. It’s even available to those who don’t hold an American Express credit card, although you will get more benefits if you have an Amex card.
One of the downsides to using AmexTravel.com is you have to create an account and log in to see the final pricing. The prices shown do not include taxes and fees, so it can be a little misleading if you aren’t logged in.
Pricing through AmexTravel.com tends to be in line with other OTAs. However, if you have The Platinum Card ® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express , you can earn 5x points on prepaid hotel stays booked through AmexTravel.com. Booking fees for flights through AmexTravel.com are also waived if you have one of these cards.
If you have American Express Membership Rewards points , you might be tempted to use them to book travel directly through AmexTravel.com. As a general rule, this isn’t a good use of points because the redemption rate is poor. You’ll often get less than 1 cent per point, which is much less than what Amex points are worth . You can get so much more value by transferring your points to one of the American Express transfer partners .
Pros and Cons of AmexTravel.com
- 5x Amex points on prepaid hotel bookings with the Amex Business Platinum card or Amex Platinum card
- Access to The Hotel Collection and Fine Hotels & Resorts
- If you don’t have an Amex Platinum card, you’ll be charged a booking fee (on flights)
- Poor redemption rate when you use Pay With Points (often less than 1 cent per point)
Hot Tip: For more details, check out our complete guide to using AmexTravel.com .
Agoda doesn’t offer much when searching for flights, but it’s worth checking out if you’re looking for accommodations. In addition to traditional hotels and resorts, Agoda lets you search for hostels, private houses, and even monthly stays.
It has great filtering options and a map feature so that you can view all of your options by location.
Agoda is another OTA that now offers its own rewards program. You’ll earn AgodaCash on every eligible booking. Then, you can redeem your AgodaCash for all or part of any hotel booking.
Additionally, Agoda offers the AgodaVIP program , an elite status program that allows you to earn additional discounts and perks.
Pros and Cons of Agoda
- AgodaCash and AgodaVIP Program
- Good search functionality
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed guide to using Agoda .
Travelocity offers many different products to book, including flights, hotels, cars, cruises, travel packages, and even activities, so it can be a little overwhelming if you aren’t sure exactly what you’re looking for. When searching for a hotel, you can add a flight, a rental car, or both to your search.
Like most other OTAs, you can save money by booking a flight and hotel together.
We did a test booking and found that booking a flight and hotel together was $35 cheaper than booking them separately. While you could save more or less on your specific travel plans, if you need a flight in addition to a hotel, it’s always a good idea to check the prices on a travel package.
Travelocity advertises lower rates of 10% or more on select hotels if you create an account. Member rates will be highlighted, but unfortunately, these discounts are only available at certain hotels, so you will need to have some flexibility to take advantage of these deals. In addition, when we did a test booking, the savings by creating an account was only $1.61.
Pros and Cons of Travelocity
- Lower member rates on select hotels
- Lower rates on flight and hotel packages
Hot Tip: For more information about booking hotels, flights, and more with Travelocity, check out our guide to booking travel with Travelocity .
Tripadvisor is known for its great reviews. It’s the place to go if you want to get a feel for a hotel or activity, complete with amateur photos taken by other travelers that show what things really look like. Did you also know you can search for and book hotels through Tripadvisor?
After searching for your destination, you’ll see a typical list of all the hotels available. In each box, there will be prices from a few websites listed. You can see a full list by clicking on the small drop-down menu in the search results. Doing so will give you a good overall feel for where you might find the best pricing. Clicking on the price will take you to the specific website to complete your booking.
Pros and Cons of Tripadvisor
- Great customer reviews
- The prices shown do not include taxes, which can vary between websites
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our guide to using Tripadvisor .
Did you know that you can search for hotels directly on Google ? Like Kayak and Tripadvisor, this is just a search engine. You won’t actually book anything on Google — it’s just another way to find the best hotel prices.
To search, just type in “Hotels in ____” in the main Google search box or go to google.com/travel/hotels .
You can easily search by location using the map or use the filtering options above your search results to find exactly what you’re looking for. You can click on any of the hotels listed on the left side or click on the prices on the map for more information.
You’ll be able to see all of the price options for your chosen hotel by clicking on Prices.
To get a sense of price trends in the area you’re searching, click on What you’ll pay right above the search results. This will give you a good sense of what prices are like in your chosen destination during your travel dates.
Pros and Cons of Google Hotel Finder
- Price trends
- No loyalty program
Hot Tip: Google Flights allows you to plan your flight, hotel, and travel package options all from a single site.
Skyscanner is generally regarded as a flight search engine, but you can also use it to search for hotels. While it’s easy to see the pricing options for each hotel, there aren’t many filtering options available. The map feature is nice if you prefer to search for a hotel by location.
Once you find a hotel and price you like, you’ll be sent to another website to complete the booking.
Pros and Cons of Skyscanner Hotels
- The lowest price for each hotel is clearly displayed
- Few filtering options
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our guide to booking travel through Skyscanner .
HotelTonight is a booking app and website geared towards offering great deals on last-minute hotel stays , although you can book rooms ahead of time, too.
The website is easy to use, but there aren’t many filtering options, so if you have something specific in mind, this may not be the best place to search for a hotel. If you’d like to set up a price deal alert, you can do so by using the toggle button right above your search results.
If you’re searching on the website, you may notice that some deals are only available on the app, so it might be a good idea to opt for the app when using HotelTonight.
Pros and Cons of HotelTonight
- Price deal alerts
- Last-minute availability
- The website doesn’t offer everything that the app does
Hot Tip: If you’re booking last minute, you may want to check out one of these websites and apps to find a good deal .
Hopper is a mobile app that offers price predictions so you have a better idea of when to book your room. It is so confident in its app that it claims 95% accuracy!
You can easily find the cheapest dates for your destination in the Hopper app. After entering the city you’d like to visit, you’ll get a color-coded map that quickly shows you the cheapest and most expensive times for hotels. You can choose your travel dates and set your filters, and then you’ll see what hotels are available.
Another feature that makes Hopper unique is the price freeze feature. By making a small deposit, which can later be applied towards your stay, you can freeze the price for 12 hours, 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days. You’ll save up to $300 if the price increases, and you’ll pay the lower price if the price drops.
Before booking a hotel on Hopper, check the Trip Extras . These are additional fees, including Hopper Tip and VIP Support , that will be automatically added on. If you want to decline them, you’ll have to unselect them manually.
Pros and Cons of Hopper
- Color-coded map shows the best prices
- Price freeze option
- No desktop booking capabilities
- Extra fees like Hopper Tip and VIP Support are automatically added
Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed guide to using the Hopper app .
Trivago , which is owned by Expedia, is another metasearch engine that scours the internet to show you hotel prices on lots of other websites so that you can easily compare them. It’s easy to use but doesn’t offer any features that differentiate it from competitors.
Be careful because a hotel’s “featured price” might not necessarily be the lowest.
Pros and Cons of Trivago
- Shows prices from many websites in one place
- The featured price is not always the lowest
- No rewards program
As you can see, there are a lot of websites that all offer what they claim to be the best prices on your hotel room. But which site is truly the best?
We put these sites head-to-head in price comparison, only looking at the price (including taxes and fees) and not taking into consideration other factors like the cancellation policy.
Hot Tip: Many websites show you pricing without taxes and fees when you’re searching. While it might appear you’re getting a great deal on a particular site at first, once you add in all of the fees, the price may be the same as all of the other OTAs.
We priced out the same hotel on every site — a 1-week stay in the least expensive room at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, to see how these hotel booking sites compared.
As you can see from the example above, most prices are similar. In this example, the lowest price came from Google Hotels, with Kayak and Trivago close behind. Hopper had the highest price.
When you book directly through the hotel, you’ll be able to earn loyalty points and take advantage of any elite benefits you may have, so it might be worth it even if the price is a tad higher.
Bottom Line: Unfortunately, no clear-cut pattern or website consistently offers the lowest prices, as it always varies. If prices are similar, look for rates that offer flexible cancellation policies and ones that earn points or perks in a loyalty program (either the hotel’s or the website’s program).
Finding the lowest price on a hotel room can be tough, but knowing where to look helps steer you in the right direction.
- If you have elite status or collect reward points from a chain like Marriott or Hyatt, it’s probably best to book direct. You generally won’t earn points or elite night credits if you book elsewhere.
- If you don’t have loyalty to a particular brand , start with a website like Kayak or Skyscanner. They can help determine where the lowest prices might be. Also, keep an eye out for special fares like Priceline Express Deals.
- If you need to book a hotel and flight , look for a vacation package. These are offered by many OTAs and usually offer big savings.
- If you often book smaller, independent hotels , it might be smart to look at an OTA with its own rewards program, like Orbitz, Hotels.com, or Expedia.
No matter where you book your next hotel, be sure to use a travel rewards credit card to max out your benefits, and you’ll be on your next trip in no time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an online travel agency (ota).
An OTA is a sort of middleman between you and a hotel. They generally offer both searching and booking capabilities. You can book a hotel through an OTA, which acts as your travel agency.
What is the best website to book a hotel for the cheapest price?
Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to that question. There are many sites offering lots of different prices, even though they all claim to have the best prices. It’s best to check a few different sites before you book or start with a travel search engine like Kayak or Google Hotels. These sites show you prices on many different sites in one place.
Will I earn hotel loyalty points when I book through a third party?
Generally, no, you will not earn any type of hotel loyalty points or elite status credit when you book through a third party. However, many OTAs like Hotels.com and Expedia offer their own rewards programs.
Do OTAs count as travel on my rewards credit card?
Yes, generally OTAs will count towards your travel bonus category on your credit card. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card earns 3x points on travel purchases, which includes online travel agencies.
Is it better to book a hotel through a third-party website or direct?
Whether or not it’s best to book a hotel through a third-party website versus booking direct will depend on a couple of factors. First, if you participate in a hotel’s loyalty program, it’s usually best to book direct so you can earn points and get any elite status perks. However, if you aren’t loyal to a single hotel brand, you may be able to save money by booking through an online travel agency. These sites can sometimes offer lower prices (especially if you book a hotel in combination with a rental car or hotel) and even may have their own loyalty program.

Booking.com : Best Hotel Booking Site Overall
Booking.com is the largest hotel booking site in the world. It currently has over 28 million listings, including hotels, resorts, homes, apartments, and lots of unique places to stay. Even if you’re not an avid traveler, chances are you’ve heard of Booking.com. Other hotel websites are incomparable when it comes to the number of hotel listings that Booking.com has.
Because of how prolific Booking.com is, the site is available in more than 40 languages worldwide. They have a dedicated 24/7 helpline, and an awesome low-price guarantee: if you book a property and then find it listed on another site at a lower price, Booking.com will refund you the difference…at least up to 24 hours before you check-in.
After your second booking, you automatically become a Booking.com Genius with all kinds of additional perks, like discounted rooms and upgrades. The more you book, the more you save on your next hotel stay.
And, personally, one of my favorite things about Booking.com is how customizable its search function is. You can do a broader destination search, search within a neighborhood, or really drill down and use the map function to search within a specific area. There are tons of filters as well, so you can filter by hotel star rating, included amenities, prices, or a specific hotel chain.
- Pros & Cons
- More listings than any other site
- Has an excellent rewards program
- Low-price guarantee
- Incredibly customizable search functions
- The number of listings can actually be overwhelming
- The low-price guarantee is useless if you're not avidly shopping around
Hotels.com : Hotel Booking Site Runner-Up
Hotels.com doesn’t have as many listings as Booking.com , but the options are still significant: they have over 300,000 properties in over 19,000 places worldwide. Like Booking.com , they don’t just sell cheap hotel rooms—you’ll find everything here from luxury hotels to hostel dorms to condo hotels.
Hotels.com really shines when it comes to their multi-level rewards program. At their lowest tier, you can unlock secret prices and you’ll earn a free night’s stay with every 10 nights you book. The there’s also Hotel.com Rewards Silver and Gold—once you’ve booked 30 nights, you’ll get free room upgrades and guaranteed late check-out or early check-in at certain properties.
Best of all, you don’t have to pay to play. You simply book accommodations and climb your way up the rewards ladder.
I highly recommend using their app. Hotels.com often features last-minute discounts with up to 40% off hotel bookings when you’re looking for a same-day check in via their app. It’s friendly to use, and worth your time to find a cheap hotel deal.
- Huge database of properties to book
- Excellent reward program that's also easy to use
- Shows hotel star rating so you can find the best one
- Easy-to-use app
- If you want to use redeem your free nights, you have to use the app
- Not as many listings as some hotel booking sites
Hostelworld : Best Website for Hostels
Hostelworld has long been my go-to option for booking hostel dorms and they’ve rarely let me down. It seems like every hostel in the world is listed on this site, and thanks to this, it’s super easy to find something you like.
This is one of those cases where the guest reviews are incredibly useful. In fact, I’ll rarely book a hostel via Hostelworld without having a look at the ratings and reviews first. They’re usually spot on in their feedback and they’ll help you know what to expect before arriving.
Affordable hostel dorms shouldn’t mean dirty accommodations or noisy common areas—you still want to get good value for your money. Hostelworld’s review scores include things like security, services, location, and atmosphere, so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting.
Hostelworld’s customer service is also excellent. They’ll refund the price of your hostel if you find it elsewhere for cheaper, and you can cancel up to 24 hours before check-in without losing your deposit. I’m a big fan of Hostelworld for all these reasons!
- Seemingly every hostel in the world is listed on this site
- Guest reviews are incredibly thorough and useful
- Easy to use website
- Many of the hostels include free breakfast, which is wonderful if you're on a budget
- Free cancellation bookings cost more than non-refundable bookings
- There are no perks or rewards as a repeat customer
- No loyalty program
Vrbo : Best Vacation Rental Site
Vrbo stands for Vacation Rentals By Owner, which is the fundamental difference here from hotel booking sites: you book directly from private property owners. There are no individual hotel rooms listed on Vrbo, but you’ll find just about everything else, from sprawling oceanfront condos to city apartments to mountaintop cabins.
Most people think of Airbnb for booking vacation rentals, but after doing a deep dive, Vrbo really came out on top . Although it doesn’t have as many listings, I found that Vrbo’s customer service far exceeded Airbnb thanks to its 24/7 customer support (meanwhile, Airbnb’s was basically non-existent). Vrbo also has a Book With Confidence guarantee, so you’ll get free cancellation coverage even if you cancel last minute.
Vrbo has the best deals for vacation rentals, with cheaper service fees to boot. Vrbo also isn’t subjected to extra taxes like Airbnb sometimes is. For example, in some places, Airbnb automatically collects an occupancy tax due to regulations in place to ease the burden of over-tourism (it seems like some governing bodies don’t deem Vrbo to be as big of a threat to over-tourism as Airbnb). Overall, Vrbo is my top choice for vacation rentals.
- More affordable listings than on other vacation rental sites
- Exceptional customer service
- Low booking fees
- Backed by an insurance policy for last minute cancellations
- No option to book private rooms within an accommodation
- Not as many listings as Airbnb
Skyscanner : Best Website for Hotel Deals
Skyscanner is most notoriously known for having the best flight deals, but did you know that they also have the best hotel prices? Skyscanner is different from other hotel sites because they specialize in cheap hotel deals, special sales, and exclusive discounts . They’re especially good at finding last-minute deals.
If you’re looking for a cheap hotel room, I recommend downloading Skyscanner’s app. You can filter search results to find hotels in your budget, or select the “Only show discounts” option. But here’s a pro tip: you can search for non-refundable rooms to find the best rock-bottom hotel prices out there. If you’re completely certain of your travel dates, this is a great option.
Another thing I like about Skyscanner: when you search for hotel stays, the search results also show the total cost for the duration of your trip (minus taxes and fees). It’s a nice way to wrap your head around budgeting for the entire trip, if you’re someone like me who enjoys crunching numbers.
- Has a reputation as one of the best online travel agencies
- Tons of filters to help you find cheap hotel deals
- Has an easy-to-use app
- You can set up price alerts to get notified when prices drop
- Doesn't have as many hotel options as other booking sites
- Doesn't show taxes and fees in the search results
KAYAK : Best Hotel Search Engine
Sometimes it’s just nice to use a simple search site with a clean, friendly interface, and KAYAK certainly has that down pat for hotels.
Unlike many sites on this list, you can’t book hotels directly through Kayak. Instead, it is just a search engine that scans through thousands of hotel chain websites, online travel agencies, and more to find discounted hotel rooms. You’ll be directed to a different site to book directly with the hotel or through a different travel website.
KAYAK actually searches for more than just hotels. You can also find flights, cars, vacations, things to do, trains, and even cruises. And yet, despite doing all that, KAYAK is an absolute pleasure to use.
Another thing I love about KAYAK: it has an excellent price predictor tool, so that when you’re searching for a hotel room (or any type of accommodation), it’ll let you know if you should sit it out for a while. Kayak uses trends for certain times of the year to predict whether a hotel room with be cheap, mid-range, or expensive. You can also sign up to get alerts about price changes.
If you want an easy way to book hotels online, KAYAK is your site.
- Simple, no-frills website
- You can book a full vacation, including flights and packages
- Has a handy price predictor tool
- You book via the hotel's website, so you'll collect hotel points if you're in a loyalty program
- Sometimes the prices on the hotel website are cheaper
- You can't book cheap hotel rooms directly on the Kayak website
Orbitz : Best LGBTQIA+ Friendly Hotel Booking Site
In 2021, Orbitz did a massive rebrand and decided to focus on the LGBTQIA+ market . At first glance, this seems a little gimmicky. Is this just another way to capitalize on a minority demographic? But Orbitz has dedicated a whole part of their website to LGBTQ-friendly travel, and that’s not something I’ve seen other hotel booking sites do.
If you’re a LGBTQIA+ traveler, staying at an inclusive hotel might be important to you. All hotels listed on this specific section of the Orbitz website have signed a special pledge to agree to enforce a zero-tolerance policy for hateful or discriminatory behavior from any staff at the hotel. Save money, search for cheap hotels, and feel assured you’ll be staying in a safe place. Win, win!
Some hotels have also taken extra steps, like offering additional training for staff on sexual orientation, gender identities, and gender expressions. Orbitz also gives to charitable organizations that support LGBTIA+ charities.
- Offers the best hotel deals for the LGBTQIA+ community
- Hotels featured here have signed pledges to be inclusive
- Has lots of great last minute deals
- The website is super busy and distracting
- Not as good filters as other hotel booking sites
Expedia : Best Flight and Hotel Booking Site
When it comes to top hotel booking sites, Expedia is basically a household name. It has been around since 1996, and since forming the Expedia Group (along with companies like Travelocity , Hotels.com , and Orbitz ), it’s learned a thing or two (or a thousand) about finding the best hotel deals, flights, vacations, and more.
If you need to book both flights and hotels for your trip, Expedia lets you do it all in one easy user interface. Plus, by bundling your flight and hotel reservation together, you can save a fair amount of cash on your trip.
You can test this out by searching for the specific flight or hotel, taking note of their prices, and then searching for the same together in a package (similar to booking packages with Expedia, but without the car rental). Sometimes the difference is significant—you can save up to hundreds of dollars.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t run a hotel or flight search on different hotel booking sites. There’s a chance you’ll be able to find better a better deal on the same hotel elsewhere, or a flight somewhere else.
- Straightforward process for booking hotels, flights, and rental cars
- One of the longest standing hotel booking sites in the world
- Offers payment plans to help pay off your trip
- Difficult to book multiple accommodations in one package
- Like most other third party sites, it's still a good idea to check the hotel, airline, or rental car website to compare prices before booking
Hotwire : Best Hotel Discount Site
Hotwire tops the charts for best hotel booking sites when it comes to secret deals. It’s a great way to find high-value hotel deals because it sells off hotel rooms that have gone unsold. Basically, hotels don’t want people to know that they have unsold rooms going for super discounted rates, so when you perform your hotel search, you don’t actually see name of the hotel.
However, you will be able to see the hotel reviews, ratings, neighborhood, amenities, and TripAdvisor ratings, as well as the exact hotel the person before you booked (for example, “The last person got the Holiday Inn Toronto Downtown Centre”). If you’re not super picky about where your hotel stay is located, then is a great option.
Plus the mystery of it all is kind of exciting, isn’t it?
Hotwire also has an excellent map view, and although this is typical of most hotel search engines, this one is particularly using for honing in on the location of your particular hotel without actually knowing what the hotel is. You can also find cheap hotels by filtering by price point and other options.
A word of warning, however: sometimes the price advertised in the hotel search results isn’t the cheapest. Although I booked and paid for a hotel in Boston via Hotwire, the hotel accidentally charged me for the room when I checked out. The price difference was actually cheaper directly from the hotel! When I complained to Hotwire, they reimbursed me the difference immediately. But the whole thing was a little bit shady.
- Offers the best deals on secret, high-end hotels
- Hotels don't want you to know they're selling off their unsold rooms, so you'll get highly discounted rates
- The mystery of it all is just plain fun!
- Doesn't have a rewards program for frequent travelers
- Sometimes it's cheaper to book directly with the hotel
- You might be disappointed with your hotel stay
HotelsCombined : Best Hotel Aggregator Site
HotelsCombined is an aggregator, which basically means it scours multiple hotel booking sites at one time to bring you the best hotel deals. HotelsCombined claims to search hundreds upon hundreds of the best hotel booking sites, including some of the top hotel booking sites like Agoda and Hilton, and some smaller ones that are lesser known.
But you don’t actually make a hotel reservation on HotelsCombined. Like other third party sites, HotelsCombined takes you to the actual hotel booking site, like Expedia or Hotels.com, where you’ll complete your booking. It’s a great way to compare prices across the board.
However, despite the multiple booking sites it searches, sometimes you’ll find better hotel deals on other hotel booking sites. You’ll have no problem finding super cheap hotel stays, but if you want to have a look at all your options, it’s best to search some other hotel booking sites as well. For this reason I don’t often use HotelsCombined to make a booking, although I have certainly used it to compare prices.
- As a metasearch engine, HotelsCombined scours hundreds online travel agencies and booking engines at one time
- You can see prices with or without taxes
- Easy to use and compare pricing and hotel reviews
- Seems to miss a lot of hotels, properties and even rooms that other hotel booking sites have listed
- Lots of ads all over the website makes for too much clutter
Agoda : Best Website to Book Hotels in Asia
Agoda originally started in Singapore, which means they started out strong as the best hotel booking site in Asia and has managed to maintain that reputation ever since (even now, as they’ve grown to offer accommodations, flights, and more worldwide). Agoda is practically a household name in Asia, and is the largest online travel agency in some Asian countries. Whenever I’m traveling in Asia , I always start with Agoda.
Like other hotel booking sites, Agoda also offers accommodations in homes and even hostels. If you desire a pod hotel in Japan or a city apartment in the middle of Bangkok, you’re in luck. There are lots of options!
Agoda also has an excellent secret deal program where the identity of the hotel remains anonymous until your booking is complete. You can see things like the star rating and the neighborhood it’s located in, but not the actual hotel…until after the reservation is made. This is so higher-end chains can sell off their rooms without letting the public know how cheap they’re going for.
Finally, there’s a PointsMAX program that lets you align your Agoda account with your mileage program, including the likes of American Airlines AAdvantage and KLM/AirFrance Flying Blue. I’ve found this to be a rarity amongst hotel booking sites, which is why I consider Agoda one of the best hotel websites out there.
- Specializes in Asia properties
- You can earn rewards with your other loyalty programs, including mileage programs
- Has secret deals you can unlock
- Insider deals aren't always the best option—you'll have to shop around
Priceline : Booking Site with the Best Hotel Rates
Priceline started out with a simple concept: if airlines regularly flew while only half full, and if millions of hotel rooms were going unused every night, what if other travelers could fill up these empty spaces with discounted fares? After all, every bit of profit counts.
In my opinion, Priceline really stands out with their Best Price Guarantee policy. When you become a Priceline member, you’ll have access to the site’s Express Deals, which are pre-paid, non-refundable, and non-transferable.
If you find a better price on an Express Deal up to midnight before you travel, you’ll be refunded 200% of the difference in price!
Even if you make a booking that isn’t an Express Deal, you’ll still get refunded the difference if you see a better price within 24 hours of booking your hotel room. Priceline also lets you search for hotels, rental cars, plane tickets, and cruises. It’s an excellent comprehensive site for anyone who knows their exact travel dates.
- Incredible price match guarantee
- Great last minute prices on hotel deals
- One of the easiest to use hotel sites
- Trips are non-refundable and non-transferable, which doesn't allow much room for flexible travel
Momondo : Best Hotel Price Comparison Site
Momondo is a pleasure to use, and is one of the best hotel search engines out there. The website itself is clean, sharp, and attractive—and best of all, everything is completely transparent.
When you search for properties on most hotel sites, you’ll get an aggregated list of hotel deals but not many other details. When you use Momondo’s hotel finder, you’ll get a comprehensive price comparison.
For example, a search for hotels in Krakow, Poland, brings up a list of hotels with their lowest price listed. City Light Apartments shows four different prices: both Expedia and Hotels.com have the same lowest fare, but Booking.com and eDreams are much higher in cost. Im not even familiar with eDreams, so it’s nice to see that Momondo gives options that are beyond the regular top 5 booking sites.
I absolutely love that Momondo breaks everything down in such a succinct manner. You can also use it for your next trip to book flights, car rentals, activities, and packages.
- Simplistic search results
- Offers up several price comparisons
- Searches sites that aren't as common as the leading brands
- Lots of filter options
- You'll be booking through a third party site, so it's important to understand their cancellation policies before you commit
Travelocity : Best Hotel Site for Vacation Packages
Who else can’t hear the name “ Travelocity ” without thinking of the little blue gnome? That’s some good marketing! Like many of the other hotel sites mentioned here, Travelocity gives you options for booking flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and more. And when you combine your trip reservations, you can save a fair amount of money.
I find that Travelocity is especially useful for booking vacation packages, which is not something I often do but is sometimes just a wonderfully convenient way to plan a trip. The process is extremely straightforward, with the option to first book your hotels, and then your flights and rental car. In a matter of minutes, you’ll have a whole complete package booked.
On the other hand, Travelocity seems to assume you’re going to fly into one city and spend your whole time there. While you have the option of booking a hotel for only part of your trip, if you’re planning on road-tripping around, you’ll have to book hotel rooms in other places separately. It’d be nice if they offered a way to book multiple hotels per vacation package.
If you register an account, you’ll also be offered lower up rates of 10% or more on select hotel reservations.
- You'll save money on booking hotels and flights together
- Comes with a price match guarantee
- Discounted rates on certain hotels if you're a member
- You can set up price alerts
- The lowest price for the bundled flight and hotel room doesn't necessarily mean you won't find it cheaper elsewhere
Google Hotels : Best Hotel Search Site
Google doesn’t actually have its own hotel booking website, but seeing as how Google is the most powerful search engine in the world, it should come as no surprise that you can now find cheap hotels directly from Google Hotels search.
It’s surprisingly smart—you can easily narrow down all your hotel options by searching for specific things directly in Google. For example, if you’re searching for hotel locations within walking distance to a conference you’re attending, all you have to do is Google hotels “near Austin Convention Center” and you’ll get a whole list of options plotted on Google Maps.
From there, you can click “View more” on the search results and filter out some of the hotels around the area you’re most interested in staying. All the hotels are plotted on Google maps, alongside other sites of interest like museums, statues, and restaurants.
The search results show plenty of great options, and you’re able to filter out your preferred hotels to find the best location for you. However, the results show just hotels and no other kinds of accommodations like vacation homes or shared spaces (except maybe some hostels). If you care more about the location of your hotel over finding cheap hotels, Google search results is an ideal option.
- You can really narrow down the best location to stay in
- Ideal for business travelers
- Easy to use filters and sorting options
- Not always the best price
- Limited types of accommodations available
- No option to book directly on Google
HotelTonight : Best Last-Minute Hotel Deals
If you’re a spontaneous traveler who doesn’t mind booking reservations last minute, you’ll love HotelTonight . This same-day booking app helps you to find highly discounted rates, even at peak vacation times. If you’re wingin’ it and booking hotels last minute, this is a great option for you, with discounts averaging between 30-50%.
All the hotel listings are categorized based on their luxury offerings and amenities, as well as price range. You might see boutique hotels labeled with DEAL, meaning the savings are significant. Other hotels are categorized as LUXE, HIP, BASIC, SOLID, and other buzz-worthy words. For example, Luxe means a high-end hotel, Hip refers to popular and trendy hotels, and Crashpad means hostels and budget rooms.
HotelTonight definitely caters to a certain demographic. One of their key messages is “Happy hour is never just a happy hour.” I suppose it’s a good tactic to discourage people from drinking and driving, but it’s a little bit sleazy at the same time. I feel like HotelTonight is expecting you to have the app handy in case there’s an emergency one-night-stand.
Even if you can’t find the ideal hotel deal, you can still request upgrades at discounted rates, which not many hotel booking sites seem to offer. HotelTonight is also purely a hotel booking site—you can’t book anything else here. It’s kind of refreshing.
When signing up, use the HotelTonight promo code JFOSTER237 to get 20% back (up to $50) after your first booking.
- Same-day bookings lead to excellent rates
- One of the few hotel sites that has discounts on upgrades
- Booking hotels is easy and straightforward
- Only works well in large cities, mostly in the United States
- Doesn't have as large of a database as other discount hotel sites
Hopper : Best Hotel Booking App
It seems like there’s an app for everything these days, including hotel reservations. Hopper is one of the best apps in the world for booking hotels. The company originally made a name for itself as a flight search engine, and since then has moved on to hotel bookings as well.
Hopper uses special software to predict future hotel and flight prices. If you’re skeptical about that, Hopper claims that their predictions have 95% recommendation accuracy! And after using them in the past to track both hotel and flight trends, I’d have to agree with them. They’ll notify you immediately if there’s a deal for the hotel you want, which is ideal if you’re planning a trip for the future.
Hopper also has a unique Price Freeze option for your hotel. If you’re researching your trip in advance and you find the best deal you’ve ever laid eyes on, Hopper will allow you to hold onto that deal for up to 60 days.
To lock in the price, you’ll have to put down a deposit (a percentage of your stay), and if the price goes up during those 60 days, Hopper will cover the difference up to $100. If the price goes down, you’ll pay the cheaper price.
You can even transfer your deposit to another hotel if you decide not to stay there. How’s that for customer service?
- You can track deals over time and follow price trends
- Their Price Freeze option locks in your deal for up to 60 days
- Predicts rates and trends with a 95% accuracy
- You can only carry out your flight or hotel search on the Hopper app
Final Thoughts on the Best Hotel Booking Site
Although I certainly have some strong preferences for best hotel booking sites, my strategy is to compare prices on hotel comparison sites and make a decision from there. I usually start with Booking.com , as they have the most options, but I’ll check a few other hotel booking sites as well.
I’ll also always check the actual hotel website to see if better rates or upgrades are offered there. I use Hostelworld to book hostels (although I’ll also sometimes check the hostel website to compare prices), and Vrbo to book vacation homes.
Explore your options, figure out which websites you like the most, and go from there. Sometimes the user experience is just as important as finding great deals. Happy hunting!
Best Hotel Booking Site FAQs
What is the best website to look for hotels.
The best website to look for hotels comes down to personal preference. For me, I search a few different sites. I often start my search with Booking.com , and then check the search results against another site like Expedia or Momondo (or the actual hotel’s website itself).
With that being said, there are so many websites that consider themselves amongst the best hotel booking sites, but the truth is, the competition is fierce. Furthermore, many of these sites belong under the same umbrella: Expedia Group doesn’t just include Expedia , but also other major sites like Vrbo and Hotels.com . While each has something different to offer, chances are many of the prices and deals are the same.
But I’ve also used Hotwire and HotelTonight when my flight has been cancelled and I’d rather not spend a night in the airport. I use Hostelworld when I’m backpacking and Hopper when I’m planning far in advance.
What is the cheapest way to book a hotel?
I think the best way to look at booking a cheap hotel room is to consider the value of your stay, rather than the amount you’re spending. For me, that means a comfortable room with lots of amenities near a busy city hub or public transit. For you, it could be completely different.
If you’ve considered all the hotel sites in this article, by now you should have a good idea of what kind of hotel websites will suit your needs. You should always search a number of sites to compare all their prices if you’re interested in finding the best deals.
However, other factors make a difference as well. If you’re traveling in peak season, prices will be higher. If you want a hotel room smack dab in the middle of a busy city center, you’re going to pay a lot more.
How do I get the best hotel booking deals?
To get the best hotel booking deals, always dive a little deeper into the booking website and see what they have to offer. For example, if you use Hotels.com ‘s app, you’ll automatically access better deals that are only featured exclusively on the app.
The same goes for rewards and loyalty programs. Companies like Expedia and Hotels.com reward loyal members by offering discounted rates and even free hotel stays. And they’re nearly always free to sign up for.
Which website is safe for hotel booking?
Booking.com is a very trustworthy site for booking hotels.
Is Airbnb cheaper than hotels?
Airbnb tends to be cheaper than hotels because you will be booking directly from a private property owner rather than a legit business.
Airbnb is really great for group travelers and anyone who wants to book out a full vacation home rather than a room or a shared space, as you can split the cost with other people (and find some pretty unique accommodations in the process).
However, in my review of Airbnb vs Vrbo , I’ve found that Vrbo is actually a better choice for vacation rentals. Service fees are cheaper, their customer service is much better, and often the price listings were incomparable.

The 8 Best Travel Package Sites for Booking a Cheap Vacation

Booking a flight, hotel, and rental car together doesn’t just save you time—it can often save you money, too. But before you make such a significant purchase, it’s important to find the best travel package sites for booking your vacation.
I tested more than a dozen vacation package sites to see which ones had the lowest prices and best user experience. I discovered that many of the best vacation package websites allow you to book any combination of flight, hotel, and rental car, while others are more limited (flight + hotel is often the default). Fortunately, some sites will let you add a car onto a hotel+flight package, even if a car isn’t listed on the initial booking page.
It’s also important to compare the price of a vacation booked as a bundle to that same trip booked a la carte as separate components. Booking a package isn’t always cheaper, and sometimes you’ll get better flight options to choose from if you search for your airfare separately. In some searches, I discovered that the flight options included by default with my vacation package had ridiculously long layovers or undesirable departure times (4:30 a.m., anyone?).
The Airlines Most Likely to Bump You Off a Flight
Keep a sharp eye out for resort fees; many of the best vacation booking sites don’t count them in their initial per-person price estimate because they’re collected separately by the hotel, but they can drive up the final cost of your trip. Similarly, optional airline baggage fees can also increase your total bill, especially if you book a flight in basic economy, and some vacation package sites don’t disclose these fees as clearly as others.
Finally, it’s important to know that many of the best sites for vacation packages are owned by the same parent company, so you’ll often find similar inventory and prices from one to the next. Knowing which sites are mostly interchangeable can save you some research time.
The Best Travel Package Sites
We put them to the test to compare prices, inclusions, and more. The following are the best websites to book vacations, listed in no particular order. Scroll down for more in-depth analysis of each one.
- Expedia’s sister sites: Travelocity , Orbitz , and CheapTickets
CheapCaribbean.com
Funjet vacations.
This well-known site is one of the best travel package sites for a reason. Expedia offers a full complement of bundle options (flight/hotel, flight/car, hotel/car, and flight/hotel/car) as well as trips to just about every corner of the globe. It’s reliable when it comes to pricing, too: Expedia offered the lowest price in two of my five tests, and was cheaper than average in all but one test booking.
That said, the amount the site said I was saving on a given package didn’t always match up to the actual price difference when I added up the cost of the trip’s individual elements. In one of my test cases, it was actually cheaper to book my flight, hotel, and car separately. So take those supposed savings with a grain of salt (or even better, price out the components separately on your own to be sure you’re getting the best deal).
Expedia has plenty of useful filters to help you find what you need. You can sort hotels by price, distance from a city’s downtown, guest rating, package discount, and property class, while flight options can be filtered by general departure and arrival times (for example, morning vs. evening), airline, whether carry-on bags are included, and more. You can also sort flight options by duration (longest or shortest), price (highest or lowest), departure time (earliest or latest), and arrival time (earliest or latest). There’s also a map view so you can check out the location of each hotel.
Best Feature: The breadth of choice and consistency of pricing make Expedia perhaps the best site for vacation packages. You may not always get the absolute lowest price here, but chances are you’ll pay a fair rate and have plenty of options to choose from.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Vacation Home?
Expedia’s Sister Sites: Travelocity, Orbitz, and CheapTickets
Many travelers don’t realize that Travelocity , Orbitz , and CheapTickets are all owned by Expedia Group, and typically have very similar inventory and pricing to Expedia. Each of these sites has similar layouts and filter options, too. Like Expedia, these three sites offer every possible vacation package combination involving a flight, hotel, and/or rental car.
It was rare for any of these sites to beat out Expedia’s prices in my tests; in general, the rates were identical (especially on Travelocity, where I didn’t find any deviations from Expedia) or a little bit higher. However, Orbitz and CheapTickets did offer slightly cheaper packages on one flight/car itinerary.
Because the pricing is so similar, it’s probably not worth searching all three of these sites in addition to Expedia unless a difference of a few dollars will make or break your travel budget.
Best Feature: Travelocity and Orbitz offer a checkbox on their main booking page to specify “I only need accommodations for part of my trip”—a feature that allows user to select a subset of their trip dates and search for travel packages only within that period. This feature is also reflected on Expedia’s search page.
Note: Expedia Group also owns Hotwire , which I didn’t find quite as reliable as the other three in my tests. For one itinerary, a nonstop flight that the other sites offered was not available when booking a Hotwire package (though it was available when booking a separate flight on Hotwire), and the pricing on some searches was a little higher than on the other sites.
Check out Expedia’s sister sites below:
Like Expedia and its partners, Priceline also offers every possible combination of flight, hotel, and rental car. Its search results pages are easy to navigate, with plenty of filter and sort options, plus a map view for hotels. Priceline offers numerous hotel options in popular vacation destinations at every price point.
One quirk to prepare for: Priceline’s flight result page lists departure and return flights together as a pair rather than letting you choose each one separately. This cuts down on the number of screens you have to click through but could mean extra scrolling while you try to find the exact two flights you want. Not all flights that are available when booking airfare separately on Priceline seem to be accessible to those booking a package—so it’s worth checking both.
Priceline was in the middle of the pack as far as pricing was concerned. It won one of my tests but was the most expensive option in two others; overall, it offered cheaper-than-average prices 60 percent of the time. To help you save money, the site offers “Express Deals” for rental cars, an opaque option in which you don’t know which rental car brand you’ll get until after you’ve booked. If you’d rather choose which company you’re renting from, standard car rentals are also available.
Best feature: Once you’ve selected your flight and rental car preferences, the site will keep them the same as you click through alternate hotel possibilities—saving you the hassle of having to select them over and over again.

What Happens If You Don’t Turn Your Phone to Airplane Mode?
As its name suggests, CheapCaribbean.com has a more limited scope than other sites on this list, but it’s worth checking if you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean, where package trips such as honeymoons are particularly popular. The site turned up cheaper-than-average prices for both of my Caribbean tests.
CheapCaribbean.com is one of the best vacation websites for all-inclusive packages. Once you’ve entered your trip information, you can also filter your results by “adults only,” “children’s amenities,” and “luxury.” Each hotel-specific page includes a list of active promotions, on-site activities, and the property’s Tripadvisor Traveler Rating.
In some ways CheapCaribbean.com isn’t quite as sophisticated as other travel package sites. There’s no map available to compare locations of the listed hotel options, and having to use a drop-down menu to enter your departure and arrival cities feels a little old-school. (Also annoying: not being able to group Houston’s two airports into a single search, though you can select “all airports” for New York City and Washington, D.C.) But the affordable deals are worth a few snags, as long as you’re only looking for a flight/hotel package—there’s no option to add a car or create any other package combinations, though you can add travel insurance and transfers, at least for the destinations I checked.
Best Feature: The “ Deals of Fortune ,” or bookings where you know the destination but not the exact resort until about a week before the trip. This is a fun feature for value-conscious travelers who aren’t set on a particular island or property.
Check out Cheapcaribbean.com
A popular meta-search site, Kayak saves travelers time by searching many of the best travel package sites with a single click. Unfortunately, you can’t specify which elements of your trip you’d like to bundle; it searches flight + hotel by default. You can add a car later on some of its partner sites, but if you’re looking for a flight/car package, you’ll have to go elsewhere.
Results list the cheapest available packages from sites such as Priceline (Kayak’s parent company), Expedia, and CheapCaribbean.com. There’s a map view available, and the results page shows both air- and hotel-related filters to make it easy to find nonstop flights, free breakfast, or a specific hotel.
I found that the prices listed on Kayak didn’t always match the price on the source site when I clicked over to find the deal—a fairly common problem with meta-search sites. But I also occasionally discovered that I got a different price after clicking from Kayak than I did when searching the same itinerary from the booking site’s home page. For example, a Las Vegas package was $819 per person on Priceline when I clicked over from Kayak, but just $783 when I booked the same package from the Priceline home page. Another test offered the opposite result, with the price being cheaper after clicking from Kayak than it was when booking directly on Priceline. The lesson: Test both options when using a meta-search site.
Best Feature: Being able to search some of the best vacation booking sites in a single place is a major time saver. Though Kayak doesn’t always find you the lowest possible price, it’s a good place to start your search and get an idea of what’s out there.

The Essential Caribbean Packing List
The Funjet home page gives you a single package option: flight/hotel. However, you can work around this by adding a rental car on at the end of a flight/hotel or individual flight booking.
There are plenty of sort options for your results, including price, hotel name, rating, distance, and location. While the map view isn’t immediately obvious and is a little low-tech, it is available, and you can filter your results to properties within a certain distance of popular landmarks.
One annoyance: Similarly to CheapCarribbean.com, there is no option to select “all airports” for certain cities like Houston or Chicago. And Funjet’s prices aren’t the most consistent, ranking as the cheapest in one test and the most expensive in another. Still, the site is worth comparing to others when booking your vacation.
Best Feature: Rather than making you scour the web for coupons, Funjet automatically applies any relevant promo codes to your search.
Note: If you’re headed to the Caribbean, Central or South America, Hawaii, or Mexico, try your search on Funjet’s sister site, Apple Vacations . The destinations it covers are more limited than Funjet’s, but I found that the prices were often a little better. CheapCaribbean.com is also owned by the same parent company, Apple Leisure Group.

Best and Worst Hotel Booking Sites for 2024
The well-known investment disclaimer “past performance is no guarantee of future results” could also apply to having a favorite hotel booking site. Hotel search engines that performed well a year ago can change for the worse and deliver poor results today.
Frommer’s regularly dives into the data to determine the best hotel sites, and this year produced quite a shakeup in our top 10. Three onetime stalwarts ( Priceline , Expedia , and Hotels.com ) were driven off our list by newcomers, including one site that had never before earned a Frommer's Top 10 slot after eight years of trying. Meanwhile, one formerly mighty booking engine that once dawdled in the bottom half of our ranking has unexpectedly come roaring back and this year, it nearly nabbed the top spot.
First, it helps to understand the playing field. There are basically three types of websites that people can use to find hotels: OTAs (online travel agencies); the hotels’ own websites , which may offer special member deals OTAs can’t match; and aggregators , or meta-search engines, which don’t actually handle reservations, but trawl both OTAs and hotel sites to return a list of results, then send you to your choice of them for final reservations.
We tested both OTAs and aggregators (and as a general rule, you should always double-check results from both types of sites against rates offered by the hotels’ own websites). Why include OTAs at all when there are aggregators that canvass them? Well, some aggregators don't comb through booking engines as well as they should. In fact, our champ for total number of hotels found in most cities was actually an OTA, and you'd think it would have been an aggregator that scans lots of websites. We blame algorithms.
A warning about booking: Hotel aggregator sites sometimes display results from booking services that post amazingly low prices but have sketchy track records for customer service. If a hotel booking website directs you to a company you’ve never heard of, before giving it a penny, do a quick search for reviews or scams associated with that business name, and also perform a quick reputation search (based on the website’s hometown) at the Better Business Bureau ( bbb.org ). Also keep a close eye on fees, which are unregulated in the U.S. and can stack up fast, and don't pay much attention to user reviews of hotels—AI has made user reviews easy to rig with fakes.
When you're making reservations, remember that some OTAs will give you a discount of 4–6% if you sign in for free. Member savings on aggregator sites are less reliable, and usually only around 1–2%. Finally, a tip for travelers with some technical savvy: To ensure you always get the actual total prices including all taxes and fees, consider using a virtual private network, or VPN, to do your hotel shopping through a server based in Ireland, where EU regulations require all those charges to be announced up front. Any server in continental Europe will actually do, but choosing Ireland has the benefit of automatically showing results in English. Clear your browser’s cookies first so the hotel sites won’t remember any previous visits.
We threw 54 room reservation scenarios at the major sites to determine which ones could find the lowest prices and the most options. We used the standard, non-member rates for all our tests, and when testing aggregators, we discarded price quotes from websites with sketchy reputations and only considered the prices from reputable resellers.
To start, we tallied the number of choices each contender could rustle up in four price categories in six major cities: San Francisco, Philadelphia, Rome, Paris, Hong Kong, and Buenos Aires.
Then, for each city, we searched for the lowest rates each site could find at four specific downtown hotels in varying price ranges for a mid-week, shoulder-season stay on the same date three months out. That advance purchase requirement assured we would see a level playing field for the same rooms on the same date, and it removed the influence of both high-season spikes and last-minute discounts.
We awarded points to hotel websites that found the lowest rates on a given hotel—and subtracted points if it returned higher prices than the others—in a rigorous, weighted system designed to determine which hotel reservations site saved us the most money consistently. We also paid extra attention to how honest websites were about disclosing mandatory added fees. If websites try to make rooms seem cheaper than they really are, we warn you.
So who succeeded on the best prices and who didn’t measure up? Read on...
Trivago has fallen from #3 to the bottom half of our rankings. It did sometimes win the pricing game by finding a rate direct from the hotel (a trick that our #1 also knew), and it was usually average or better on price. That is, except in Buenos Aires, where Trivago returned the lowest number of hotel results of anyone, and it couldn’t even find a single quote for one of our test properties that other sites found easily.
What’s more, it seems to favor its partners over you, the customer. Like other aggregators, it tended to push results from Booking.com and even then, it didn’t always lead with the lowest price it found. What good is a hotel booking site that hides the lowest prices? Even more concerning, when Trivago did lead with a too-good-to-be-true rate, it often came from from a notoriously dubious third-party site, including in its supposedly vetted "Trivago Book & Go" results.
Trivago was also inconsistent. On its first try at the posh Paris pad, it claimed there were no rooms available. Since we had already tested a dozen other sites, we knew that couldn't possibly be true, so we ran the search again and, suddenly, up popped a good price. Had we not searched a second time, it would have failed our test. And what good is a hotel booking site where you have to search twice?
While Trivago has recently improved its filters—you can now get granular on things like price ranges or distance from a desired address (though it still lacks a handy “neighborhoods” filter)—Trivago was frankly more annoying to use than other top sites. It was also the only aggregator in our top 10 that never gave an indication of how much taxes and fees were—you have to click over to the booking site for that. What good is a hotel search site that won’t tell you how much you’ll end up paying?
Aggregator Skyscanner , one of the best airfare aggregators in the business ( and we ran the tests to prove it ), has also managed to build a decent hotel search engine, and this year, it debuts on the Frommer’s Top 10 with solid results that only once failed to find a below-average price—and that was for our budget Buenos Aires hotel where even our #2 stumbled and Trivago failed entirely.
Skyscanner was particularly strong in Europe, and its filter set was fairly good. While Skyscanner didn’t offer the option to calculate full rates with taxes and fees the way some better-performing sites did, at least it acknowledged when they weren’t included.
So why is Skyscanner just #7? Aside from mostly middlin’ price discoveries, it seemed to get its lowest rates from less-than-reliable sources like shifty online travel agencies. Some results were even culled from other aggregators and weren’t actually available once we clicked over. (To its credit, Skyscanner posts a disclaimer about this practice at the top of its results.). On the other hand, unlike some other search engines, it has partnered with a reputable OTA to offer direct bookings: Trip.com.
OTA Agoda seems to have settled comfortably into the middle of our results, falling one spot from last time but still ranking as the second-best OTA in general. Agoda was far and away the best site for reservations outside of North America and Europe. That makes sense, since it started as an Asia specialist.
Aggregator The O.G. travel aggregator has bounced around in our ratings over the years, but it seems to be finding secure footing among the top five. Kayak was, impressively, one of only three sites that never returned a price or hotel count lower than the average.
Kayak has a solid set of filters—including very nice fill-in window for location so you can name any landmark or address. It also gives you that crucial option to show rates inclusive of taxes and fees.

Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., the world leader in online travel and related services.
Verified reviews from real guests.
We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .
How does it work?
It starts with a booking.
The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.
Followed by a trip
When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.
And finally, a review
After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

10 best last-minute travel websites
W ith spring in the air and summer just on the horizon, many will be starting the search for suitably affordable last-minute trips abroad.
But organising a holiday at short notice is often easier said than done, whether it’s a spontaneous couples’ getaway or last-minute break with friends and family. The excitement of researching a destination can quickly dissipate once the slog of trawling travel agent, airline and tour operator websites has begun. Comparing flights and accommodation costs on different days for different destinations can really feel like hard work, the antithesis of the fun holiday you’re hoping to book.
The good news is that, whether you want to jump across the Channel to see the Eiffel Tower or head long-haul to the beaches of Cancun, there are hundreds of online options to help you find the best deals for booking transport, places to stay and other extras.
Instead of spending hours on dozens of different websites, check out this list we’ve compiled of some of the best in the travel marketplace. You’ll save time on the research and money on the holiday too – what’s not to like?
Holiday Pirates
This travel deals site manually searches for the best holiday offers daily, finding a range of big discounts and emailing them to subscribers. At the moment you can book an eight-night tour of Turkey, staying in four and five-star hotels, for under £560pp. Other destinations with deals range from as close as Amsterdam to as far away as Mexico.
holidaypirates.com
Jack’s Flight Club
Sign up – for free – to the club and get emailed the cheapest flights from the UK and Ireland including discounts, hidden offers and error fares – think UK to Brazil for £290. Many are last-minute deals, but remember, with prices like this it’s fastest finger first.
jacksflightclub.co.uk
Google Flights
As you’d expect from the algorithm masterminds, this site compares and tracks fares to find you the best deal. But it also has features for the last-minute traveller, such as an option to search for flights in any number of cities for a specific date – so you can see if it’s cheaper to go jet off to Athens or Oslo this weekend.
google.co.uk/flights
Hotel Tonight
This handy website offers last-minute deals if you need a place to stay tonight, tomorrow or within the next seven days. While some deals – especially in the US – are not so good, it can deliver deep discounts in Europe and the UK while also saving you time browsing the best deals.
hoteltonight.com
Kayak
On the “Explore” section of Kayak you can enter your trip length, travel time and dates and the site will come up with a range of options for you to choose from. The easy-to-use map feature is a great way to compare locations and prices for a last minute trip.
kayak.co.uk/explore
BA Holidays
No, it’s not a discount specialist, but BA Holidays – the package wing of British Airways – can offer deep discounts for last-minute trips, pairing unsold flight inventory with empty hotel rooms. In fact, the deals can be so good that a city break with hotel included can work out cheaper than the flights alone, and a week’s car hire in Europe can be close to free.
baholidays.com
With more than 30 million subscribers worldwide, Travelzoo features a host of deals ranging from trips abroad to activities such as spa visits, theatre ticket deals and cruises. A sign-up is required to see full details of deals, but it seems worth it for trips such as four nights and return flights to Ibiza for £149pp.
travelzoo.com
Secret Escapes
You’ll find discounts of up to 70 per cent at Secret Escapes, which follows a similar model to Voyage Privé , offering flash sales to registered members. It’s a great place to scout high-end discount holidays and the customer service of the site has been praised as excellent.
secretescapes.com
Best at Travel
This company’s central London call centre means someone is always on hand to help you out. It’s a “normal” tour operator but has a last-minute deals section on the website, which can offer good discounts on upmarket breaks. Deals at the time of writing included seven nights’ all-inclusive in Crete from £811pp including flights, departing on 15 April.
bestattravel.co.uk
Travel Republic
With about two million customers using the site to book holidays, Travel Republic is bound to have some good deals, and there’s a vast number to choose from, since it shifts flights, tickets for attractions and traditional package holidays. For its top destinations, such as a week self-catering in Corfu, you could find holidays for as little as £218pp . The site also features a lowest-price guarantee, should you spot a better offer for the same holiday elsewhere.
travelrepublic.co.uk
Perhaps the best known site on this list, Skyscanner currently claims to have over 100 million users per month. The site provides you the cheapest, fastest and ‘best’ option for flights. Available in over 30 languages and offering a quick comparison for flights, hotels and car hire, the chances are that you’ve used it before and will use it again.

How to Find the Best Travel Insurance
Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

What travel insurance covers
How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.
Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.
Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.
You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.
Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.
Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.
Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.
According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.
Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.
Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:
Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.
Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.
Travel insurance costs vary depending on:
Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.
Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.
Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.
Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.
Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.
Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.
Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.
You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.
Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.
Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:
Travel medical insurance
These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.
International travel insurance
Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay
Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:
Your own illness.
The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.
Natural disasters.
Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.
Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).
Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.
Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.
Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.
Baggage and personal belongings
How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.
Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation
This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.
» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?
24-hour assistance
This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.
Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.
Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance
This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.
This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage
Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.
Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.
Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies
Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.
Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.
Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.
Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.
When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.
Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?
Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?
Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.
Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:
You booked flexible airline tickets.
Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.
It's already included in your credit card.
You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.
» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance
Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.
There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.
For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.
Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.
Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.
Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.
It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.
However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

Moscow Became the Best Travel Destination of 2019
Apart from Moscow, the category featured such cities as London, New York, Lisbon, Paris, Saint Petersburg, Sidney, Rio de Janeiro, and others. The awards ceremony took place in the city of Muscat, Oman, on November, 28. “World Travel Awards is a quality mark, and it means that Moscow is consolidating its positions as one of the world’s travel capitals. Moscow has a rich history and culture, it is a city with one of the biggest economies of the world, a huge busy metropolis. Tourists coming to Moscow from all parts of the world get positive impressions, unique experience and feel comfortable and secure. The best proof is the appraisal of travelers who voted for our city along with the world travel industry professionals. It is a great honor for us to win such a prestigious award! I am sure that we have many global wins ahead!”,– Yekaterina Pronicheva, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, said.
Moscow was nominated to the World Travel Awards 2019 in three major categories: “World’s Leading City Destination”, World’s Leading Festival & Event Destination, and World’s Leading Sports Tourism Destination. Additionally, the award organizers nominated Moscow in two more categories: World's Leading Business Travel Destination and World's Leading Cultural City Destination. Winners were chosen in an open vote held at the Award’s official site until October 20.
In 2019, World Travel Awards have been granted in 80 categories. The winners are hotels, airlines, tour operators, cities, resorts, and attractions. All in all, there were more than 1,000 participants in 2019.
Except for Moscow, among Russian participants in different categories were cities (Kazan, Saint Petersburg), airlines (Aeroflot), hotels (Mamaison All-Suites Spa Hotel Pokrovka, Radisson Royal Hotel, Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy, Lotte Hotel), restaurants (City Space) and tourist companies (Academservice).
In 2019, Moscow’s tourist flow has been growing. During the first 9 months of 2019, Moscow received 19.5 million tourists. During this period, Moscow received 753.8 thousand tourists from China, 267.8 thousand from Germany, 121.7 thousand from France, 118.4 thousand from Italy and 113.6 thousand from Israel.
The most typical guests of Moscow – people younger than 34 y.o., so-called “millennials” (the generation born between 1981 and 1996) – are the most active visitors. They visit the capital to get new impressions; they are attracted by numerous festivals, sporting events, and cultural scenes.
The capital currently has 1,718 hotels. The annual occupancy rate of the capital’s properties equals 77 %, which is comparable with that of Amsterdam, London, and Paris. Moscow is also a traditional point of tourist interest on the New Year holidays. Four and five-star hotels near Tverskaya Street are the top performers: 95 % of their rooms are occupied during the New Year holidays.
In Moscow, there are 1,691 certified guides and interpreters who conduct tours in 26 different languages, and 1,972 guides who conduct tours in Russian and work for the local travel market.
