How to view and clear your web browsing history in Safari on iPhone or iPad

Easily wipe your browsing history in Apple's Safari web browser in seconds.

How to find your web-browsing history

How to clear your web browsing history.

Clearing your browsing history on iPhone and iPad in Safari has been a straightforward affair for years now.

Sometimes, you may want a fresh start with your web browsing — perhaps to get rid of some history that may bring up a memory you'd rather forget as you type in a website URL in the address bar.

Apple makes this feature very easy to access on both the iPhone and iPad by offering two ways to clear your history. So with this in mind, here's how you can do just that and make a fresh start in Safari .

Viewing your web history in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is very easy to do — and it's all done from Safari.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar that's below the address bar.
  • Tap the History icon in the upper right corner. Here, you can view your entire web history.
  • Use the History search bar to find previously viewed pages.

If the time calls to wipe most or all of your web browsing history in Safari, here's how to do it on both iPhone and iPad.

To note, the below steps will be the same if you attempt to wipe your web browsing history on an iPhone 15 Pro Max , and an iPad Mini 6 for example.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button.
  • Select the History icon in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Clear and select how much history you'd like to clear: the last hour, the last day, 48 hours' worth, or all recorded history.

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated. To tell Apple's web browser to automatically clear history after 24 hours would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

iPhone screen showing the Safari app icon in the center

You'll definitely want to know how to clear Safari browsing history on iPhone and iPad . Know how to delete browsing history is part of basic user operation on all your devices, and is especially if you share devices with others.

Luckily, deleting browsing history on Safari is easy and can be done in just a few taps, and is the same on iOS and iPadOS, so whether you're using an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPad Air , these steps will apply.

Remember, though, that deleting your browsing history only stops your activity being visible on that device. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will still be able to see the webpages you have visited. If you want to stop that, for ultimate privacy, you'll need to use one of the best VPN services .

The following screenshots were taken on an iPhone running iOS 17 . If you aren't running the latest version of your device's OS, we can show you how to update an iPhone or how to update an iPad .

  • In Safari, tap the book icon
  • Go to the history tab (clock)
  • Select how far back to clear

Read on to see full illustrated instructions.

1. In Safari, tap the book icon

Firstly, open Safari and tap the book icon in the bottom bar.

2. Select the history tab (clock icon) and tap Clear

Now select the history tab (clock icon) and tap Clear at the bottom.

3. Select how far back to clear and tap Delete

Now choose how far back you'd like to delete : last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all time.

If you like, you can toggle on Close All Tabs , which will close every open tab that isn't in a tab group (we can show you how to use tab groups if you aren't sure).

Finally, when you're happy, hit Delete .

As you can see in the screenshot above, if you now go back to the history tab, your history will have been deleted.

How to clear browsing history on Safari on iPhone or Mac

William Gallagher's Avatar

You can clear your Safari browsing history on both iOS and Mac

clear safari search history iphone

As tracking goes, Safari keeping your browsing history is less about privacy-busting security and more about just being useful. It's your history that means Safari remembers where to go to when you choose forward and back within a site, for instance.

It's also how Safari is able to offer you a list of sites that you regularly go to, on account of how handy it is to be able to back to them with a click. History also does keep things you may not expect, though, such as a list of items you've downloaded.

If you don't want that, though, or you're just fed up of Safari going to site addresses you haven't looked at in years, you can wipe the whole browsing history.

On a Mac, you can also wipe, for instance, just the last hour's browsing history. So if you share Safari and it's someone's special birthday coming up, you can avoid them inadvertently finding out you plan to surprise them with dance lessons.

Go to History, Clear History, and then choose how far back you want your browsing cleared

How to clear search history on Safari on Mac

  • In Safari, choose the History menu
  • Select Clear History from the very bottom of the menu
  • In the dialog box that appears, choose from clearing the last hour , today , today and yesterday , or all history
  • Click on Clear History

Alternatively, within Safari you can press Command-Y and the current page will be replaced by a history list. There's a Clear History... button toward the top right.

Clicking on that gives you exactly the same dialog about choosing how far back you want to clear your browsing history. But this page does also give you one extra option — the ability to delete one specific item.

How to clear one item from Safari search history on Mac

  • In Safari, press Command-Y
  • From the long list, click once on a history item to select it
  • Right-click to bring up a menu, then choose Delete

Alternatively, if you select one, two, or more items in the history list, you can then press the Delete key to remove them all.

You can remove your takeaway habits from Safari, we're not judging you.

That kind of precision removal is only possible on your Mac, not on iOS . However, whether it's precision or wholesale clearing of your history, though, there is a way to replicate it on iOS.

If you have set iCloud to share your Safari history, then just doing this on your Mac also removes the history from your iPhone, and iPad.

Otherwise, you're stuck with going to your iOS device. And then with clearing the entire history.

How to clear search history on iPhone

  • Go to Settings on your iOS device
  • Tap on Safari
  • Scroll down to Clear History and Website Data
  • Tap that, then tap Clear History and Data to confirm

One important thing to note is that you can't selectively remove, say, today's browsing history on the iPhone or iPad . It's all or nothing, with iOS.

Clearing your Safari history is all or nothing on iOS

What you leave behind

Clearing your history like this does remove the list of sites and pages you've visited. It does mean you can't go back to that site you read last Tuesday, not without remembering what it was and going there yourself.

What it doesn't remove, though, is the information that gets used by something like AutoFill. If you have your address, for instance, and you're used to online forms being filled out with it, you've still got that feature.

You've also still got anything you downloaded. It's purely that Safari won't keep the list of downloads.

How to clear the search history on your iPhone

How to delete specific website history from safari on iphone or ipad.

Forgot to enable Private Browsing mode on Safari? Don't nuke your entire history, prune specific sites instead.

Quick Links

How to remove websites from safari history, how to delete specific website data, don't forget about private browsing mode.

It's not always convenient to delete your entire history, but you can instead choose to delete specific websites from your history (and the data they leave behind on your device). Here's how to do it in Safari for iPhone and iPad.

Safari will record any websites you visit unless you use Private Browsing . Once a website is in your history it will appear in the URL bar when you start typing a related term. There are all sorts of reasons you may want to prune specific websites, and it's easy to do so.

Open Safari and tap on the "Bookmarks" icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like an open book).

View Safari Bookmarks and History

A pop-up will appear with three tabs for your Bookmarks, Reading List , and History. Tap on the clock icon to see your history.

Safari History on iPhone

You can now swipe left on any entry in your history and tap "Delete" to remove it for good.

Rather than scrolling through your entire history of visited websites, you can also search for specific terms or URLs using the on-screen search box . But that's not the only evidence a website may have left behind on your device.

Related: How to Change the Default Search Engine in Safari on iPhone or iPad

Websites leave all sorts of data on your device including cached images and cookies . If you want to remove all signs of a website, it's important to remove website data as well.

Launch Settings and tap on Safari > Advanced > Website Data. This menu may take a little while to load as Safari fetches a full list of website data and estimates how much storage each entry takes up on your device.

View Safari Website Data

You can now follow the same procedure as above by swiping left on any websites you would like to forget about and tapping the "Delete" button that appears.

You can also search for specific websites using the search bar at the top of the screen, or nuke everything using the "Remove All Website Data" button at the bottom of the list.

Delete All Safari Website Data

Note that if you do remove website data (or wipe everything) that there may be some drawbacks like having to log in again or having your shopping cart emptied.

Related: Clearing Your Cookies All the Time Makes the Web More Annoying

You can use Private Browsing mode in Safari at any point to visit a website without it being recorded to your device. To do this, tap on the tab icon in the lower right corner of the screen followed by the number of tabs you have open at the bottom of the screen. From here tap "Private" to switch to a private browsing session.

Note that all tabs in your private browsing session will remain open until you close them , so make sure you close anything that may compromise your privacy.

To get a better handle on your iPhone or iPad's privacy settings, we recommend a periodic iOS privacy check-up .

Your iPhone history is usually used to make things easier for you, such as tracking down a website you've visited or finding a call you missed. If you're worried about someone seeing something they shouldn't, you can delete your web browsing and search history, call and message logs, keyboard autocorrect dictionary, Siri interaction data, or even erase everything completely. This wikiHow will show you easy ways to clear your iPhone's history to preserve your privacy.

Things You Should Know

  • To clear your Safari browsing history, go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Web Data.
  • To clear your call history, open the Recents area of the Phone app, tap Edit, and then tap Clear.
  • Use the Google app to delete your search history.

Step 1 Open the Settings app icon.

  • In the future, you can use Safari's Private Browsing mode to visit websites without saving them to your history.

Step 2 Scroll down and tap

  • If this button is grayed-out, there's either no history saved, or the option is restricted in Screen Time . You can reenable Clear History and Website Data in Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions Web Content by disabling all website restrictions.

Step 4 Confirm that you want to delete the history.

  • Your AutoFill information (e.g., contact info and saved credit cards) will not be deleted.
  • Alternatively, you can delete the cookies without clearing your history. Navigate to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data . Select Remove All Website Data .

Step 1 Open the Chrome app.

  • If you don't want Chrome to add the websites you visit to your history, you can browse privately in incognito mode .

Step 2 Tap the Menu button (⋮).

  • Note that this will delete the Google Chrome browsing data for any synced devices as well.

Step 1 Open the Phone app icon.

  • In addition to clearing your entire call history, you can also delete individual received or sent phone calls from your call log.

Step 2 Tap the Recents tab.

  • If you just want to delete a single entry instead of clearing your entire call log, tap the red minus sign next to the call you want to clear.

Step 1 Open the Messages app icon.

  • If you're signed in to another device, such as an iPad or Mac, using the same Apple ID, your iMessage history will be cleared from that device as well.

Step 6 Change your message history settings.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Select Messages .
  • Tap Keep Messages .
  • Select how long you want to store messages for. This will automatically delete messages that are older than the new setting.

Step 1 Open the Settings app icon.

  • For example, if you use iCloud to sync your iMessages (the default option), those messages will reappear on your iPhone after you sign back in with your Apple ID after erasing your phone.

Step 2 Open the Settings app icon.

  • You may need to enter your Apple ID password or iPhone passcode.
  • This will restore your device to the factory settings, deleting all of the information and settings.

Step 6 Set up your iPhone.

Screen Time serves as a comprehensive tool that empowers users to manage and monitor their device usage, including app activities, screen time statistics, and content restrictions. To proceed to the Screen Time section, scroll through the main categories within the Settings app until you locate the "Screen Time" option. Step 3: Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions

Upon entering the Screen Time section within the Settings app, the next critical step in the process of clearing Safari history on your iPhone with restrictions involves tapping on "Content & Privacy Restrictions." This pivotal action serves as the gateway to a comprehensive suite of controls that empower you to manage the content accessed on your device and enforce robust privacy restrictions in alignment with your preferences.

As you navigate through the Screen Time settings, the "Content & Privacy Restrictions" option stands out as a central pillar of control, encapsulating a diverse range of settings that govern the digital experiences available on your iPhone. By tapping on this option, you gain access to a wealth of configurable parameters that enable you to tailor the content accessibility and privacy safeguards according to your specific requirements.

This additional layer of authentication underscores the significance of the controls housed within the "Content & Privacy Restrictions" section, emphasizing the paramount importance of safeguarding your privacy and content preferences.

Once you have successfully entered the Screen Time passcode, you will be ushered into a comprehensive interface that presents a multitude of configurable options, ranging from app restrictions and content filters to privacy settings and explicit content controls. This rich tapestry of controls empowers you to fine-tune the digital environment on your iPhone, ensuring that it aligns with your desired content restrictions and privacy parameters.

Within the "Content & Privacy Restrictions" section, you can delve into specific categories such as "Content Restrictions," "Privacy Restrictions," and "Allowed Apps," each offering granular controls that cater to diverse aspects of your digital experience. Step 4: Enter Screen Time Passcode

Upon tapping on "Content & Privacy Restrictions" within the Screen Time settings, you will encounter a pivotal security measure that underscores the significance of safeguarding your privacy and content preferences: the requirement to enter the Screen Time passcode. This essential step serves as a crucial authentication mechanism, ensuring that only authorized users can modify the sensitive settings encompassed within the "Content & Privacy Restrictions" section.

The Screen Time passcode, a unique numeric code set by the user or the device administrator, acts as a robust barrier against unauthorized access to critical privacy and content controls. By prompting users to enter this passcode before granting access to the configurable parameters, Apple prioritizes the security and integrity of the user's digital environment, reinforcing the notion of personalized and secure device management.

Upon initiating the process of entering the Screen Time passcode, users are prompted to input the predetermined numeric sequence, thereby validating their authorization to modify the content and privacy restrictions on the device. This deliberate authentication process not only safeguards the user's privacy but also instills a sense of confidence in the efficacy of the privacy controls embedded within the iOS ecosystem.

The act of entering the Screen Time passcode represents a pivotal juncture in the journey to clear Safari history on an iPhone with restrictions. It underscores the user's agency in managing their digital footprint while emphasizing the paramount importance of privacy and content security. By adhering to this security protocol, users can navigate through the sensitive settings with the assurance that their privacy and content preferences are safeguarded against unauthorized modifications.

In essence, the requirement to enter the Screen Time passcode serves as a testament to Apple's commitment to user privacy and security, ensuring that users can manage their digital experiences within a robust and personalized framework. Step 5: Tap on Clear History and Website Data

After successfully navigating to the "Content & Privacy Restrictions" section and entering the Screen Time passcode, the next crucial step in the process of clearing Safari history on your iPhone with restrictions involves tapping on "Clear History and Website Data." This pivotal action serves as the definitive mechanism to erase your browsing history and associated website data, ensuring a clean slate for your digital footprint while adhering to the content and privacy restrictions set on your device.

Upon tapping on "Clear History and Website Data," you will be presented with a prompt that seeks confirmation for the deletion of your browsing history and website data. This deliberate confirmation step serves as a safeguard against inadvertent data loss, ensuring that users can make an informed decision before proceeding with the deletion process. By prompting users to confirm their intent, Apple underscores the significance of data privacy and empowers users to exercise control over their digital footprint with mindfulness and deliberation.

Once the confirmation is provided, the Safari browser will initiate the process of clearing the browsing history and website data, effectively removing the traces of your online activities from the device. This comprehensive data erasure encompasses not only the browsing history but also associated website data, including cookies, cached files, and other browsing-related information. By purging this data, users can ensure a streamlined and privacy-enhanced browsing experience, aligning with their content and privacy restrictions while optimizing the performance of the Safari browser on their iPhone.

2. Disable iCloud Private Relay To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

iCloud Private Relay is an exclusive feature only available to users with an iCloud+ subscription. While it is supposed to help protect users’ privacy when browsing the web through Safari, it might be the reason for Safari freezing. Several people have reported that disabling iCloud Private Relay helped fix the issue which is why we suggest you do the same.

  • Tap the “ Your Name ” option located at the top.
  • Tap the iCloud option on the Apple ID page.
  • On the iCloud page, tap the Private Relay option.

  • Pick any option that you deem fit as you can easily re-enable Private Relay whenever you want.

3. Remove All Website Data

Safari is likely lagging on your iPhone due to Website Data. For those unaware, Website Data includes files, images, cookies, etc. of websites you visit or have visited. This stored data helps speed up the load times of previously visited websites. However, they also occupy a good chunk of storage over an extended period. Therefore, deleting website data might help fix the issue.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone and navigate to Safari .

Head to Advanced in Safari Settings

  • Tap the Website Data button.

Tap the Remove All Website Data button To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

  • Tap the Remove Now button to confirm your selection.

If you’d like to further optimize and clean your iPhone, I always recommend a reliable maintenance app like Intego Washing Machine because it has a dedicated iOS and macOS cleaning engine that gets rid of unnecessary files, build-up files, and stored data from your system, getting your device at its best performance.

4. Force Restart iPhone To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

  • As soon as you see the Apple logo, release the Side button . Please do not release the Side button before the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Steps to Force Restart iPhone

Even though older iPhone models don’t support iOS 17, you can still encounter freezing issues in Safari. Therefore, we’ve mentioned the steps to help you force restart your iPhone.

Safari might be freezing or not loading properly because it cannot establish a stable internet connection. This can happen due to misconfigured network settings. Hence, resetting these network settings might help fix Safari freezing issues on iPhones.

8. Update iOS To Fix Safari Freezing on iOS 17

Finally, software bugs in Safari or iOS 17 might be the primary reason Safari is freezing. Since Safari is a part of the operating system, we can’t update it from the App Store as it updates along with iOS. Moreover, software bugs that have made their way to stable iOS versions are usually fixed with iOS updates. Therefore, updating to the latest version of iOS might be your best bet to fix Safari freezing on your iPhone.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Navigate to the General option.
  • Tap the Software Update option on the next screen.
  • Here, tap the Install Now or Update Now button to update your iPhone to the latest iOS version.
  • Enter your device’s passcode to continue.

If none of these methods help fix Safari freezing issues, the last option is to contact Apple Support . Alternatively, you can also visit an official Apple Store and get your device inspected at the Genius Bar. We hope this guide helps you fix Safari freezing on iOS 17. If you have any doubts or are aware of other methods that help resolve the issue, please let us know in the comments below.

How to close all your Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad at once

  • Set a time frame (one day, one week, or one month) for Safari to automatically close tabs that are older, preventing tab clutter.
  • Organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups. Create tab groups to categorize and easily find open web pages based on topics or interests.
  • Close Safari tabs open on your Mac from your iPhone.

Safari on your iPhone tends to be a bit overzealous at opening new tabs, resulting in a web browser that's more crowded than a Taylor Swift concert. Thankfully, iOS and iPadOS make it possible to close all but one tab at once -- it's one of our favorite tricks for iPhone.

If robot vacuums can automatically clean your house, why shouldn't your phone automatically clean up tabs for you? The iPhone can automatically close tabs that are older than a week or a month, keeping your Safari tab count from creeping to embarrassing numbers. You only have to arrange your settings once, then Safari will do the cleanup for you, set it and forget it.

Best iPhone: Is the new iPhone 15 worth it?

Safari has a few other hidden organization features, like tab groups and even the ability to close your MacBook's open tabs from your iPhone. We're sharing our favorite tricks for keeping your Safari tabs under control, starting with how to close all tabs on your iPhone or iPad.

How to close all tabs on iPhone or iPad Safari

If you're like us, and you end up with multiple Safari tabs open, closing them all down individually can take a very long time. We had 246 open at one point.

If you have tabs you want to keep open, you'll still need to close all of your tabs individually, pin them, or you can save a bookmark and reopen them afterward. Another option is to move those favorite tabs to a new Tab Group, as this process only deletes the tabs in the group. If you want to clear out the Safari clutter, you can close all but one tab with just a few taps. Here's how:

  • Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the icon with two squares in the lower right corner to view all your open tabs.
  • Optional: If you have any tabs that you want to keep open, press and hold on that tab and select Move to Tab Group , as this process only does one tab group at a time.
  • Long press on the thumbnail for an open tab . Pro tip: Use a tab you would like to keep open, as this will be the only tab remaining at the end of the process.
  • Tap on Close Other Tabs.

Alternatively, you can long-press the tab button in the bottom-right corner of Safari and then select Close All Tabs to quickly close everything that's open, including the tab you're currently viewing.

How to automatically close old Safari tabs on your iPhone

Whenever you open a link from another app, odds are it opens in Safari and creates yet another new tab, making it fairly easy for your tab count to grow without you even realizing it. But you don't have to go through and close all your tabs on a regular basis. Instead, you can have your iPhone automatically close old tabs after one day, one week, or one month.

This is a great option if you have a tendency to rack up open tabs quickly. If you turn on this feature, remember to use the bookmark tool or reading list to easily recall any important websites to revisit later, which tends to be easier than searching through your Safari history.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and select Safari.
  • Under Tabs, find the Close Tabs option and tap on it -- it should be set to 'manually' by default.
  • On the next screen, tap the time frame that you would like Safari to close old tabs after -- either one day, one week, or one month.

How to organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups

Maybe you like having 217 tabs open at once (I won't judge, I've been there) but you want to be able to find what you need a bit more easily. Safari allows you to use tab groups to organize your open web pages. For example, you could have a tab group for online shopping and another for housing your favorite news websites that you want to leave open to easily read every morning. Tab Groups allow you to organize your web browsing and are especially helpful if you have lots of tabs open at once.

  • Open the Safari app on iPhone.
  • Tap on the tab icon in the lower right corner -- it's the one with the two squares.
  • Tap the menu icon at the bottom center.
  • Select New Empty Tab Group or use the New Tab Group with # Tabs to create a group with the tabs already opened.
  • Name the new tab group and tap Save.

How to close open safari tabs on your mac from your iphone.

If you have a MacBook or iPad signed onto the same Apple ID as your iPhone, when you open the Safari app, and you tap on the two squares in the bottom right corner, you will see a list of the pages open on your MacBook below those open on your iPhone. It isn't possible to close them all down at once from your iPhone, but you can close them out one by one from your iPhone, so they are no longer open on your Mac.

  • Make sure that you have Safari enabled under the iCloud settings first . Head to the Settings App.
  • Tap your name , then iCloud .
  • In Apps using iCloud , make sure the Safari toggle is green .
  • Open Safari on your iPhone.
  • Tap the tabs icon.
  • Tap the plus to open a new tab.
  • Scroll down on the new tab until you see "From [Your MacBook's Name]."
  • There are two ways to close out these tabs -- you can tap and hold the entry to close, then select close. Or, you can click "Show All" then swipe left and tap close.

More Safari organization tricks

Did you know that you could create different browsing profiles to keep your work and personal browsing separate? It's a new feature on iOS 17, but it's not the only Safari trick that can help keep your browser organized. You can also bookmark multiple tabs at once, or even alphabetize that long list of open Safari tabs. You can even swipe left on the address bar to quickly open a new tab. Of course apps rinse your storage space, especially heavy-duty social media platforms.

Unfortunately, there is 'erase all' button for deleting the cached data from your iPhone or Android

But apps on your iPhone or Android can also save temporary files like search history, user settings, or recently viewed pages.

This is known as cached data - and its the same cache that you're encouraged to clear on your laptop or PC from time-to-time.

People often overlook that their phones, too, can keep hold of this cache data.

And clearing it can help free some storage space on your phone.

Unfortunately, there is 'erase all' button for deleting the cached data from your iPhone or Android.

How to clear cache on iPhone

Instead, iPhone users must go to into their Settings and scroll down to the list of apps installed on their phone.

From there, you can tap on individual apps to see if they have a clear cache option.

To clear the cache from Safari, simply follow these steps: Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data , select a timeframe, and tap Clear history .

Reviewing and clearing search history and caches for browsers and other apps may be a good practice if you’re concerned someone has access to your device. Many apps store information about what you’ve searched for and what you’ve looked at so that it’s easy for you to rediscover it in the future. For example, when you use the Maps app, having a history of locations you’ve searched for or navigated to can make it easier to navigate back to a place you recently visited.

If you’re in an unsafe personal situation and need to look up safety strategies online but don’t want Safari to keep a record of what you’ve viewed, you can open a Private Browsing window on iPhone , iPad , and Mac . When you use Private Browsing, the details of your browsing aren’t saved, and they aren’t shared across your devices. Additionally, if you’ve updated your devices to iOS 17 , iPadOS 17 , or macOS Sonoma 14 , Safari locks Private Browsing tabs after a period of inactivity so that they can be opened only with your password, passcode, Face ID or Touch ID , protecting your privacy when you’re away from your device. You can clear your browsing history and open a Private Browsing window on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Clear your browsing history in Safari

If you’ve been looking up information about safety strategies online and are concerned someone may see your browsing history, you can remove all records that Safari keeps about where you’ve browsed.

When you clear your history, Safari removes data it saves as a result of your browsing, including:

A history of the webpages you visited

The back and forward list for open webpages

A list of frequently visited sites

Recent searches

Icons for webpages

Snapshots saved for open webpages

A list of items you downloaded (downloaded files aren’t removed)

Websites you added for a Quick Website Search

Websites that asked to use your location

Websites that asked to send you notifications

Outlook and other apps are unable to connect to Outlook.com when using Basic authentication

Last Updated: February 27, 2024

Users signing into Outlook.com through Basic authentication may experience recurring password prompts in Outlook and other third-party email applications. This is a known issue. We have taken actions to protect our customers and mitigate their risk to the increase in bad actors trying to gain access to their accounts.

For many years, applications have used Basic authentication to connect to servers, services, and API endpoints. Basic authentication simply means the application sends a username and password with every request, and those credentials are also often stored or saved on the device. Traditionally, Basic authentication is enabled by default on most servers or services, and is simple to set up. While Basic authentication was the standard at the time, Basic authentication makes it easier for attackers to capture user credentials, which increases the risk of those stolen credentials being reused against other endpoints or services.

Basic authentication is an outdated industry standard. Threats posed by it have only increased with time and we have already deprecated Basic authentication across numerous products. (For more information, see Improving Security - Together. ) There are better and more effective user authentication alternatives.

In the coming months, we will be working to fully remove support for Basic authentication from Outlook.com, and only rely on OAuth (also known as Modern authentication).  While we understand that this experience is frustrating, we are ultimately trying to protect our customers and the safety of their accounts.  OAuth has become the industry standard, and Microsoft and Outlook have long supported it. Many third-party email applications have also adopted OAuth.

Microsoft will communicate timelines and a more detailed plan to retire Basic authentication in Outlook.com in the near future; however, we did want to provide details and guidance about how users can move from Basic authentication to OAuth which should eliminate the increased number of authentication prompts they may be seeing.

Recommended User Actions:

For users having problems connecting to their Outlook.com email, here are the ways they can update their accounts to use OAuth for authentication.

If you use Outlook for Windows:

Outlook supports OAuth in all current Microsoft 365 subscription SKUs and Outlook 2021 LTSC (any SKU with build 11601.10000 or higher) when connecting directly as Outlook.com. If your Outlook is configured to connect to Outlook.com using POP or IMAP, OAuth is not supported. This means that when Basic authentication is fully deprecated, it will no longer connect.  For this scenario, you have a few options:

Option 1: Switch to Outlook.com/Exchange Syncing – Instead of using POP/IMAP and SMTP, create a new Outlook Desktop profile and then add your Outlook.com account using automatic account configuration, which will add the account with OAuth. To do this, please use the following guidance:

Create a new Outlook Desktop profile, Create an Outlook profile.

Add your Outlook.com account, Add an email account to Outlook .

Option 2: Get a newer Outlook email app which supports OAuth – If your Outlook client does not support OAuth, you will need to upgrade to the latest version and then setup using Outlook.com Sync. You can either purchase a new Outlook License, use the Outlook that is included in your Microsoft 365 subscription, or download the New Outlook for Windows for free .

The following versions of Outlook Desktop do not support OAuth for Outlook.com:  Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016 MSI, Outlook 2019 LTSC. Any release of Outlook Desktop with a version less than 11601.10000 does not support OAuth for Outlook.com.

Outlook apps are available for free and can be downloaded directly from the Microsoft Store on Windows, the Mac App Store , iOS App Store , or the Google Play Store .

After your download the new email app, add your accounts and they will all be configured to use OAuth and sync properly, helping keep them safe.

If you use Mozilla Thunderbird:

Mozilla Thunderbird does support OAuth and it is recommended that you ensure you switch to use those settings. Any account that you add to Thunderbird will now automatically setup using the proper settings.  You have the following options.

Option 1: Update Current Settings

Change Thunderbird's server settings:

Select  ≡  >  Account Settings .

In the left pane, select  Server Settings  for your  O utlook.com  or  H otmail.com  account.

Thunderbird screenshot 1

Change Thunderbird's authentication method for sending messages (SMTP):

In the left pane, select  Outgoing Server (SMTP) .

Thunderbird screenshot 2

Select  OK  to save your changes.

Option 2: Remove Current Account and Re-Add

If you remove your current account from Thunderbird and then re-add it, the proper settings will be detected, and you will just need to sign in to be properly configured with OAuth and the proper server settings.

If you use Apple Mail:

Apple Mail supports OAuth by default when you setup the account as Outlook.com. If you use Apple Mail and you are seeing password prompts or connection errors, this is most likely happening because your account got configured as basic auth. To mitigate the issue, remove the account and add it back as Outlook.com.

Remove your account from Apple Mail :

Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts .

Tap the email account you want to remove from your iPhone, then tap Delete Account. For more information, please go to  Add and remove email accounts on iPhone .

Add your account back to Apple Mail :

Go to Settings > Mail .

Tap Accounts , then tap Add Account .

Apple mail add Outlook.com to iPhone

If removing and re-adding the account does not address the issue, do the following :

Remove the account again.

Go to Settings > Safari , then tap Clear History and Website Data .

Reboot your iPhone.

Add the account back and proceed through the Outlook.com account sign in flow .

If you use another email application:

Always check the add account steps to look for Outlook.com and use it if that option is available. If Outlook.com is not an option, you will want to contact the application's support to confirm that they support OAuth against EAS, POP, IMAP, and SMTP. If they do not, you will be able to continue using Basic Auth until we announce our final deprecation dates. However, you may experience increased login prompts as we work to protect accounts.

As a reminder, all users can download Outlook for free and it works with most email services. Outlook can be downloaded directly from the Microsoft Store on Windows, the Mac App Store , iOS App Store , or the Google Play Store.
