John and Susan Blair's home in Lower Saucon Township will be the site of Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites' 30th Annual House & Garden Tour preview party, 6-9 p.m. June 10. Guests will enjoy an outdoor oasis at the rear of the house, which includes an outdoor kitchen, a spa, saltwater pool with fountains and a pool house, alongside a custom-made golfing green. Festivities will include music by Temple Avenue Jazz and heavy hors d'oeuvres prepared by Catering by Karen Hunter of the Sayre Mansion.
For 30 years, the Rooms to View House & Garden Tour has been the premier spring fundraising event at Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites (HBMS).
This year, the nonprofit organization draws inspiration from decades of tours for a showstopping edition that highlights the history, beauty, and innovation of homes and gardens in the Lehigh Valley.
The weekend kicks off with a preview party, 6-9 p.m. June 10, at the home of John and Susan Blair in Lower Saucon Township. Guests will enjoy an outdoor oasis at the rear of the house, which includes an outdoor kitchen, a spa, a saltwater pool with fountains and a pool house, alongside a custom-made golfing green.
Festivities will include music by Temple Avenue Jazz and heavy hors d’oeuvres prepared by Catering by Karen Hunter of the Sayre Mansion.
The 30th annual Rooms to View House Tour, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 11, will feature self-guided tours of more than a dozen picturesque properties. Individuals can explore beautifully designed interiors and striking outdoor spaces, including verdant lawns, flowering gardens and tranquil ponds.
Private gardens include The Elias Garden in Bethlehem, which boasts a perennial and native plant garden as well as herb and vegetable gardens. Visitors can also partake in English Tea and scones while children search a maze for hidden surprises.
Also in Bethlehem, the garden of Ron and Sharon Donchez spans almost an acre and draws influence from the couple’s decade living abroad. Rare plants, unique pruning techniques, and sculptures make for a distinctive feel to this plant collector’s garden.
In addition to visiting lush gardens, tour guests will have the opportunity to step into homes of historical significance. Among these, a Victorian property renovated and restored by the owner of Shafer Construction can be traced back to 1892 when it was one of the first homes in the Bethlehem Heights Subdivision. See the award-winning historical addition featuring a Victorian turret, stained glass windows, and a witch’s hat roof.
Other historic structures on the tour include the historic Archibald Johnston Mansion and the accompanying Keeper of the Keys Estate. Tour guests can step across the threshold into the 17-room mansion where Archibald Johnston, a president of Bethlehem Steel Company and the first mayor of the joined Bethlehem boroughs, and his family hosted lavish dinners and parties. The Keeper of the Keys Estate was the childhood home of Elizabeth Johnston Prime, granddaughter of Archibald, most well known for her collection of dollhouses, housed at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts in Bethlehem.
The tour does not stop at historic spaces but continues into updated and contemporary interiors as well. Guests will have the chance to peruse the Floyd Simons Armory, recently developed into modern apartments that highlight historic features of the original building, including steel trusses.
Similarly, old and new structural elements come together at 30 E. Wall Street, where New York-based firm Studio Superette — founded by a former Moravian Academy student — created open plan living while celebrating the historic character of the late 19th-century brick house.
After the tour, visitors are invited to enjoy wine and cheese in the beautifully designed gardens of Historic Bethlehem’s Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts, 427 N. New St. While at the museum, they’ll also have a chance to view the museum’s new “ A Glimpse Through Glass ” exhibition, which features glass artifacts from the HBMS collection and six private collections, alongside loaned contemporary artworks from seven regional glass artists and a glowing glass gallery, featuring a display of rare uranium glass artifacts.
In honor of Rooms to View’s 30th anniversary, HBMS will provide tour guests with access to the online collection of videos from the 2020 and 2021 Rooms to View tours — over three hours of video content, including home tours, homeowner interviews, exhibitions, and video demonstrations.
Tickets for the Preview Party and the House & Garden tour are $125 , while tickets for just the House & Garden tour are $30 for HBMS members and $40 for non-members. Proceeds from ticket sales, available online at historicbethlehem.org/events/garden-tour, help Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites to maintain 20 historic landmarks in Bethlehem.

10 of the Most Fascinating Historic Homes in Lehigh Valley
Beautiful Lehigh Valley Historic Homes
When planning your home viewing tour, book your stay at the historic Sayre Mansion in Bethlehem, where you can experience the old-world elegance of Lehigh Valley firsthand. Plus, you’ll be just a short drive from the most stunning historic homes in the area! Here are some of our favorites.
- Burnside Plantation: The Burnside Plantation is a 6.5-acre plantation in Bethlehem, PA. Originally owned by James Burnside back in 1748, Lehigh County bought the plantation in 1986 in order to restore, develop, and manage it as a living and natural history resource.
- Central Bethlehem Historic District : This district is primarily residential, but also includes commercial buildings along Main Street. Most of the buildings were built between the mid-18th to early-20th century and reflect Bethlehem’s development from a Moravian community to an industrial based economy.
- Jacob Jr. Ehrenhardt House: Built in 1803, this 2 1/2-story fieldstone house features a slate-covered roof and is open to the public as a historic house museum.
- Gauff-Roth House: Located in Allentown, PA, this house features a wraparound porch, third-floor balcony, 66 windows, and two working chimneys. An oak staircase stretches three floors, and 43 doors and extensive wood decorations have retained their original finish with few minor changes over the years.
- Mount Airy Historic District: Also known as Mount Airy Park, this national historic district in Bethlehem includes large, ornate residences built between 1910 and 1930 and has a few homes that date back as early as 1895.
- Shelter House: This historic home located in Emmaus, PA, was built between 1734 and 1741 and is a medieval-type Germanic log house with a gable roof and square stone chimney. The structure is believed to be the oldest continuously occupied structure in the Lehigh Valley, as well as the oldest building in Emmaus.
- Rodale Organic Gardening Experimental Farm : Also known as the Working Tree Center, this farm is home to a historic farmhouse that dates back to about 1830. It’s significant for its associations with J.I. Rodal, who was an early proponent of organic gardening and farming in the twentieth century.
- Kemmerer House : Formerly known as the Mr. & Mrs. Russell L. Pellett Residence, this historic home is also located in Emmaus and was built between 1840 and 1850. Its two-story, masonry dwelling has Georgian style influences and a Pennsylvania-German forebay barn can also be found on the property.
- Fountain Hill Historic District : This national historic district in Bethlehem has buildings that include elaborate, architecturally distinctive mansions and public church buildings. The mansions are the focus of the district and include the Linderman / Schwab Mansion, Robert Sayre House, and Elisha Packer Wilbur Mansion.
- The Sayre Mansion: Also known as the Robert Sayre House, our mansion is located in the heart of the Fountain Hill Historic District. Robert Heysham Sayre was the chief engineer of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and built his Gothic Revival-style mansion in 1857. He moved his family to the mansion in June 1858 and lived here until his death in 1907. Today, our stunning Bethlehem bed and breakfast features luxurious accommodations , historic charm, and refined services that will make your trip the Lehigh Valley one you’ll never forget!

Who were the Moravians?
Deeply religious. Industrious. Undeterred by hardship. Peace-loving. Progressive. All of these words describe the Moravians of Bethlehem, members of a Protestant church that dates back to 15th century Europe. Seeking to spread their faith as missionaries, they immigrated from Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic) in 1735 to the British colony of Georgia. When they arrived, the pacifist Moravians found themselves unwillingly involved in a conflict with the Spanish as well as with Native Americans. This prompted their resettlement to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1741.
The early settlers lived a communal life in the Gemeinhaus (community house), fittingly named because it was not only the center of the community, it actually housed the settlement’s 80+ people for several years. The Gemeinhaus was home, school, doctor’s office and church, all in one. Here, the settlers lived a disciplined and spiritual life, with work and church as their focus. In the early years (through 1762), the Moravians contributed to a communal economy, meaning that all individual labor was for the benefit of the community, its growth and missionary work. As the Moravian community matured, a cash economy was adopted, and settlers established their own businesses.
Progressive in many ways, the Moravians of Bethlehem valued education for girls as well as boys and treasured beautiful music (one of the earliest orchestras in the Americas was founded here in 1744).
To learn about daily life in Bethlehem’s Moravian community in the 18th century, be sure to join a docent-led tour of The Moravian Museum of Bethlehem.

Moravian Museum of Bethlehem
If you’re someone to whom history whispers its tales, a trip to the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem is a fascinating stop. The museum, a National Historic Landmark, is housed in the 1741 Gemeinhaus, believed to be the largest 18th-century log building in continuous use in the U.S. Its centuries-old white oak timbers support several sections built over the course of three years from 1741 to 1743. To learn about daily life in Bethlehem’s Moravian community in the 18th century, including religion, education, work life and missionary work, be sure to join a docent-led tour of the museum.
1758 Sun Inn Museum
This museum consistes of five self guided tour stops on the first floor only. The Inn hosted dignitaries vistiing the Moravians and stood just North of the Moravian General Economocy settlement. The Inn played a vital role during the Revolutionary Way and is where the Marquis de Lafayette began his recuperation after being wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. The Museum depicts the reproduction of furnishings and accommodations that the Sun Inn uniquely offered in the 1700’s that far exceed that available elsewhere including Williamsburg.
Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts
The Kemerer Museum is one of only 15 museums in the USA exclusively dedicated to the decorative arts. Here, visitors can see the extensive collection of furniture, china, textiles, artwork, clothing and other decorative objects collected by Annie S. Kemerer and her family. Not to be missed is the Elizabeth Johnston Prime Dollhouse and Toy Collection, one of the largest collections of antique dollhouses in America. The Kemerer also features a garden designed by Scott Rothenberger’s PLACE that showcases sculptures by local artist Skip Karlik.
National Museum of Industrial History
Four galleries of this fascinating museum explore America’s industrial history and how mechanical innovation helped build our nation’s status as a world power. See more than 20 artifacts loaned from the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, including an enormous Corliss steam engine and a 20-foot tall steam hammer. Learn about the daily lives of steel workers, how iron and steel were made, and how Bethlehem Steel came to be recognized world-wide. The museum is located on the SteelStacks campus.
