Monsoon in Kerala

Kerala does not have incessant rains that stop all activity. It rains for a few hours with sunny interludes. Occasionally the rains might stretch on for a few days but sunshine is never far away. These golden interludes provide an equilibrium to life's natural flow

Kerala has mainly two rainy seasons. The Southwest Monsoon that arrives in the month of June is called Edavappathy, as it comes in the middle of the month of Edavam on the Malayalam Calendar.

Mid October witnesses the arrival of the Northeast Monsoon. In the Malayalam calendar this month is called Thulam and hence the name Thulavarsham meaning the 'The Rains in Thulam'. The rain clouds gather from the Bay of Bengal and hurry to Kerala through the Palakkad Gap in the Western Ghats. The swirling, jostling, billowing dark messenger of life sailing on the wings of northeast winds is a breathtaking sight to behold.

The art forms of Kerala demand the utmost dedication and training. These native art forms require complete control over every nerve of the body. As part of this training the artists undergo ayurvedic therapies. Special herbal oils and medications are applied on the body of the artist during the Monsoon time to ensure muscle flexibility and dexterity of movement

As nature recoups with the rains, it is rejuvenation time for humans too. According to Ayurveda, Monsoon is the best season for rejuvenation therapies. During the Monsoon season, the atmosphere remains dust-free and cool, opening the pores of the body to the maximum, making it most receptive to herbal oils and therapy.

A man on a cycle under an umbrella as it rains in Kerala

The state of Kerala is the first to welcome the monsoon season in India. Kerala has two rainy seasons – Southwest Monsoon (June to September) and Northeast Monsoon (mid-October to mid-November). What’s unique about the monsoon season in Kerala is that the state does not experience rain continuously. Instead, heavy rains or slight drizzles occur for a few hours and bright sunshine follows. On rare occasions, however, it can rain for a few days but the sun comes out right after. This rhythmic pattern of cool rain and warm sunshine makes the monsoon season in Kerala a magical one.

During the monsoon season, Kerala takes on an unbelievably beautiful charm. The first rain washes all the dirt and dust away making the place shimmer with lush greenery. It is during the monsoon season that you can actually unwind yourself while admiring the graceful charm of the land. Waterfalls are more majestic than ever, premium accommodations offer jaw-dropping discounts and backwaters cruises are as romantic as they can possibly be. The environment becomes ideal for rejuvenating and effective ayurvedic therapies. And since the place is not crowded at all, travelers can have the best of all experiences.

Here’s a list of things you must definitely do in Kerala if you happen to visit during the monsoon season.

Take a houseboat cruise

The backwaters of Kerala look most beautiful during the monsoon season. The serene waters become crystal clear, the coconut and palm groves are greener than ever and the views all over are simply majestic. In this ideal climatic condition, a houseboat cruise offers an unforgettable experience. It makes you feel cosy, comfortable and most importantly, content. That is because the weather is cool, the sound of rain is pleasant and the views, of course, are out of this world. Houseboats are safe during monsoon. Even if the rain or wind gets heavy, the houseboat is steered to smaller canals. So you can still enjoy the backwater scenes without have to worry about the strong winds.

Enjoy a canoe ride

Although a canoe ride can be enjoyed throughout the year, the most adventurous ones can be experienced only during the monsoon.  A canoe allows you to explore the deeper sections of the backwaters. These deeper areas display quaint and rustic beauty during the rains. The gratifying earthy scent of rain falling on dry soil, the sparkling greenery in the villages on the shore, fresh flora and the beautiful homes of the villagers make for a truly refreshing environment. It can be somewhat challenging to row a canoe during the rain but that’s what make the journey adventurous. Travelers trying the canoe ride must know at least a bit of swimming.

Note: Avoid open-top canoes.

Rejuvenate yourself with an ayurvedic therapy

places to visit in kerala during monsoon

Experts on Ayurveda claim that any ayurvedic treatment has most effect on the human body during the monsoon. This period of the year is called “Karkidakam”, a month with great medical importance in ancient times. People would have medicinal food once a day for the whole month, believing that this will keep them healthy the whole year. And during monsoon, there’s no dust in the atmosphere and skin pores open wide thus allowing ayurvedic therapies to have a greater impact. Kerala offers premium ayurvedic therapies. They help to detoxify, boost immunity, alleviate health concerns, shed weight or simply rejuvenate the body.

What to wear during the monsoon

It is better to wear light clothes because even if they get wet, you can dry them easily. Avoid jeans and thick shirts or T-shirts. Also avoid expensive footwear as the rains can spoil them. Instead, use plastic or rubber footwear. Carry rain coats or umbrellas wherever you go.

Loved Manjummel Boys? Visit Kerala's own Guna Caves at Kochareekkal in Ernakulam

 alt=

The picturesque village of Kochareekkal in Ernakulam district has been luring visitors with its serene beauty and radiant charm. At a time when the film Manjummel Boys  and the 'Guna Caves' featured in it are impressing film buffs, the caves at Kochareekkal are winning a lot more attention. The dense forest that is home to unique species of flora, the natural fences formed with wild creepers, the pond with its sparkling waters and the spectacular caves that hide behind two giant trees are some of the scintillating features that make Kochareekkal seem as mysterious as a distant village in a tale of fantasy. Kochareekkal, which is just twelve kilometres away from the Piravom town is the perfect destination to enjoy a one–day trip with your friends and family.

places to visit in kerala during monsoon

There is a chasm-like region right in the centre of the village where the iconic caves are located. The steps here lead to a verdant forest that is beautiful and serene. Interestingly, it's not just the caves that make Kochareekkal a favoured tourist destination. These caves are surrounded by fabulous natural beauty and greenery that grant a magical ambience to the area. The caves are visible as soon as you begin climbing down the stairs. There is a small stream that embraces the floor of the caves. Interestingly, the stream doesn’t dry up even during the summer and the people of the village rely on this clean water for drinking purposes. The stream flows into the square-shaped pond below. The water in this pond is so clear that you can see the rock floor underneath. People often visit this shallow pond, especially during the monsoon season.

Giant trees whose branches seem to be touching the skies are the highlight here. These huge trees with thick foliage are what make Kochareekkal darker even during the day. Moreover, these trees grant a mysterious vibe to the forest here. Interestingly, the roots of these trees, which would grow up to forty metres, have taken the shape of caves. The roots protect and sustain the caves. The stream in the caves is as clear as a mirror. The ancient caves that are hidden behind the giant trees are revealed as you walk on the steps. Up to forty persons could enter the cave at the same time. The legend says that warriors used to hide in these caves that were almost three kilometres long. The caves have many unique sights in store for the adventurous ones who seek them.

Kochareekkal dons unique emotions during the summer and the monsoon. Blooming flowers, the ponds with crystal clear water and the flowing rivulets are some of the sights that could be enjoyed during the monsoon. Meanwhile, the summers are pleasant and the cave entrances look spooky with the rock floors covered in withered leaves.

You could see around the caves, walk through the forests and enjoy the beautiful nature in just half a day. Kochareekkal is a perfect place in Ernakulam to stop by on the way to Munnar. Besides, the Areekkal waterfall is close to Piravom. So, do not wait to plan a wonderful trip to Kochareekkal and Areekkal to enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of nature.
