Remembrance of a Roadrunner

UTSA episode of ‘The College Tour’ now streaming on Amazon Prime

UTSA episode of ‘The College Tour’ now streaming on Amazon Prime

Emmy-nominated storyteller Alex Boylan films an episode of "The College Tour” on Main Campus.

MARCH 22, 2023 — Today, UTSA made its debut on the Amazon Prime Video series, “The College Tour.”

Created by award-winning producers and hosted by Emmy-nominated storyteller Alex Boylan , each episode of “The College Tour” highlights one university through the stories of its students. UTSA is one of more than 80 universities and colleges that have been featured to date.

“For high school students trying to decide where they want to attend college, traveling to visit different campuses can be expensive and time-consuming, which may hinder students from considering schools that are farther away from home,” said Lynn Barnes Jr. , UTSA senior vice provost for strategic enrollment. “By partnering with ‘The College Tour,’ we now can show prospective students and high school counselors across the nation and the world what life-changing opportunities are available here at UTSA, through the eyes of Roadrunner students who are seizing those experiences to create their bold futures.”

“We now can show prospective students and high school counselors across the nation and the world what life-changing opportunities are available here at UTSA.”

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Espy speaks to the Roadunner community during "The College Tour" screening.

The episode is split into 20 segments—one for each featured student —allowing Roadrunners from a variety of majors and backgrounds to illustrate life at UTSA from their unique viewpoint. Each segment also focuses on a different aspect of the UTSA experience, ranging from campus life and student activities to career-engaged learning and research excellence.

The students starring in the episode were selected through a video audition process, and filming took place in September 2022 at various locations across the Main, Southwest and Downtown campuses.

The following Roadrunners comprise the student cast:

  • Chloe Barnes (senior, geography and environmental sustainability)
  • Joshua Barron (senior, electrical engineering)
  • Miranda Boggan (junior, psychology)
  • Angelica Cordero (sophomore, psychology)
  • Canaan Eggers (sophomore, computer science)
  • Juan Ramirez Garcia (senior, music studies)
  • Gisele George (graduate, physics)
  • Jesus Guillen Jr. (senior, electrical and computer engineering)
  • Farah Hamed (senior, finance and management)
  • Maren Kitogo (senior, kinesiology)
  • Erica McFarland (senior, public health)
  • Esteban Mejia (senior, mechanical engineering)
  • Jenelle Millison (senior, computer science)
  • Madeline Morales (senior, environmental science)
  • Kaitlyn Page (senior, marketing)
  • Emily Perez (junior, microbiology and immunology)
  • Daniel Phillips (junior, cyber security)
  • Amanda Salas (senior, multidisciplinary studies)
  • Maria Wilhelm (doctoral student, educational leadership)
  • Rashad Wisdom (senior, cyber security)

UTSA leaders and members of the student cast, along with their friends and families, enjoyed an on-campus screening last month. Swapping out the typical red carpet, guests walked the UTSA orange carpet, enjoyed music and refreshments, and watched the one-hour episode in the Student Union Retama Auditorium at the UTSA Main Campus. A panel of cast members also screened the episode for prospective students and their families at UTSA Day last month.

“Being a part of ‘The College Tour’ was an amazing experience for our UTSA team of students, staff and faculty who worked in front of and behind the camera to produce the show, and we are excited that soon everyone will have the chance to see the final product,” said Barnes.

Along with the main episode, Boylan also spent time with UTSA President Taylor Eighmy and Director of Freshmen Recruitment Ana K. Rodriguez as part of the Coffee With the President and Ask Admissions miniseries. In these brief episodes, Boylan gets additional insight from Eighmy and Rodriguez about UTSA’s admissions process, financial aid, life in San Antonio and other topics relevant to prospective Roadrunners.

“San Antonio is such a special place. It’s the seventh-largest city in the US, but the city is so welcoming, it really feels like a family,” said Boylan. “The same thing is true for UTSA: from the moment our crew stepped foot on campus, we felt like honorary Roadrunners.”

“UTSA also is one of fewer than two dozen universities that are designated both as a Hispanic-serving institution and a Tier One research university, and it was evident from our time on campus that the university is really leveraging that distinction, as well as its many partners across San Antonio and Texas, to create one-of-a-kind opportunities for its students. We're so excited about sharing the UTSA story with the world.”

“The College Tour” will be available on Apple TV and other streaming platforms , in addition to Amazon Prime Video.

Filming 'The College Tour' at Jacksonville University marks homecoming for host Alex Boylan

college tour on amazon prime

Gathered outside behind the Howard Administration Building, about two dozen students wearing Jacksonville University shirts and big smiles awaited cues from film director Bob Jury.

He waves his hands animatedly and calls out, "We're rolling, big enthusiasm, here we go." It marked day eight of filming for the school's feature in " The College Tour ," an Amazon Prime series that spotlights colleges and universities around the country.

For the show's host and executive producer Alex Boylan, this episode marked a special homecoming. Boylan is a JU dolphin himself, graduating in 1999.

"Coming back to film my alma mater, words cannot describe it," he said. "JU has made me who I am to this day. Some of my best friends are students I went to college with. It’s been so meaningful."

Boylan created "The College Tour," which is now filming its fifth season, out of necessity after struggling to tour college campuses with his niece during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The mission is to tell the story of college education," Boylan told the Times-Union. "How do you do that with 2,500 campuses across the country? We try to be as diverse as possible [with a range of campus sizes and student populations]."

Other Florida schools featured on 'The College Tour'

Jacksonville University is a private, liberal arts university with a population of about 4,000 students. Other Florida schools featured on "The College Tour" include Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, the University of Central Florida and Florida Tech.

Boylan describes the episode's production as a collaborative effort between the school and his team.

"This is a six-month process to make one episode," he said. "There's two months of pre-production with teams meeting weekly, then on-location for almost two weeks and then post-production for two months. Then marketing and distribution — it's a journey ... we're just finding great stories and bringing them to you."

What to expect from The Jacksonville University episode

The Jacksonville University episode will feature a range of mini-profiles on current students, school leaders and alumni, all in the hopes of portraying a school's vibe through viewers' screens.

Students to be featured on this episode of "The College Tour" include a star lacrosse player, a sailing student with Olympic potential, a violinist, shark researcher and student organizers.

Sommer Kinsler, 19, is a freshman at JU who is being featured in the episode. She singlehandedly organized a Black History Month celebration this year on campus that has been lauded by school leaders.

"She wanted to do all the things and here she is. She hit the ground running at JU," said school spokeswoman Laura Phelps.

Kinsler, who is from a small town in Georgia, said she was excited to share her experience with viewers of the show.

"The support system we have on campus, they want you to be a leader and to feel like you can achieve those things," she said.

Boylan said stories like Kinsler's are what sets the show apart.

"Each story is really the student. It’s not scripted, it’s not marketing," he said. "It’s telling their story and what their life is like. What we want is peers documenting peers. Everyone knows what it’s like to be in college — we’re just getting them to open up and tell their stories."

As the group works on filming the episode's intro and outro segments, Boylan chats with students. Show producers remark how he's needed to do fewer takes than usual. He says it's because this episode is personal and that he practiced the script 10 times more than he usually would.

"I'm usually on location two-to-three hours and out. This week, it's been eight days," he said. "It's fun seeing the students and seeing them get nervous about being on TV. I just tell them 'you've got this. It's going to be weird, a bunch of people staring at you. But it'll be great.'"

He adds, "that's the key to television — big smiles and be happy."

The one-hour episode is expected to air this summer.

The College Tour

Amazon Prime’s ‘The College Tour’ features UC

By Drew Amman, Fox19 I February 19, 2022

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Highlighting colleges and universities across the country, Amazon Prime is releasing its third season of “The College Tour,” and the series features the University of Cincinnati.

Last fall, UC started having a conversation with Amazon during a time when enrollment at UC was on the rise.

“Especially during covid, how much enrollment had grown, so they picked us up,” UC Vice Provost of Enrollment Management Jack Miner said.

UC already received praise from Forbes as one of the universities rated as one of their most beautiful college campuses.

“They sort of cherry-picked some of those campuses that came across well on video,” Miner added.

For UC, this helps in terms of outreach.

“Obviously, if you’re in the Cincinnati area, in the Ohio area, you’re going to come on a campus tour, but we have so many students we’re attracting now from other parts of the country that hadn’t really thought about UC,” Miner said.

Success from UC’s football program (reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time) and the school’s elite Co-op program are two other big factors in UC’s increased visibility. According to Miner, recognition from Amazon is extended far beyond the views of the campus and the queen city, making this a lot more than just a pictorial.

“Most of the content is really the voices of our students, so it’s the students talking about what their favorite part of campus is, how they engage in the Co-op. We do a tour of downtown and let students talk about how great it is to be at a university that is in an urban environment,” Miner said.

The Amazon Prime series “The College Tour” is featured on 18 different channels.
