How much does a kenya safari cost.

I think it’s one of the biggest misnomers in budget travel – namely that Africa is cheap to travel.

Again, that’s far too obtuse, let me reframe that…

I think it’s one the biggest misnomers in budget travel that East Africa is a cheap destination to head to.

Indeed, travelling in East Africa, of which Kenya is a part, can often be hugely costly to adventure in, especially if you don’t shop around for bargains or are constantly off on activities and excursions.

As usual, tours are always the most expensive way to travel but, because many people feel so nervous about travelling in this part of the world, they often opt for them, which although isn’t necessary, I do understand.

Now this is all fine – if you have a big budget, want to splurge on the trip of a lifetime or don’t have a lot of time to research and plan then having an expensive trip to Kenya is no problem!

However, if you want to visit this country on less than your average tourist and still have a good time, it pays to know a few key tips.

So here’s my guide to what you can expect to pay for a trip in Kenya, as well as some of my top budget tips for travel here.

Introduction to this kenya travel budget.

This budget is based exactly on my travels in Kenya, which actually lasted a couple of months in total… so you can trust it’s entirely authentic!

And now that you trust me(!), let’s be clear about something – this budget involves travelling in Kenya as a solo shoestring adventurer i.e. eating in cheap local spots, staying at cheap local hostels and opting for cheap safari and scuba diving deals.

It involves using local public transport where possible and works towards keeping entrances fee, tours and guides services to an absolute minimum.

And that’s because I’m a budget travel blogger!

This means I’m always looking to do things as cost-effectively as possible while still having a good time and the odd treat 😉

And have a good time in Kenya I certainly did, which is why I’m so happy that my daily expenditure here actually came in lower than that of any other East Africa country I visited – namely Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.

Mostly this is down to the fact that I stayed in Kenya the longest and, in particular, stayed put in a number of places at the coast for quite a while, which certainly helped lower the cost.

As always, slow travel wins!

But I realise this isn’t everybody’s style and so this article is going to be based around what particular elements of your trip might cost and to give you some idea about what you can expect to spend, especially if you’re trying to watch your small pockets!

Things Not Included in the Budget

However, it’s worth pointing out that there are some elements I didn’t include in the budget, most of which involved expenses incurred before I reached the country.

For example, this budget doesn’t include the cost of any visas (which for Kenya you probably will need FYI), nor the cost of international flights, (I always use Skyscanner to find the best deals) so don’t forget to factor those in as well.

The budget also doesn’t include any gear I bought before the trip, nor does it include travel insurance.

#1 Accommodation in Kenya

So the first thing that might start to surprise you about the cost of travelling in Kenya is the accommodation.

This is likely to be because it’s probably is not as cheap (on average) as you would expect.

As with a lot of travel services in this part of the world, there’s a reason for that – the infrastructure isn’t as well developed and it is mostly aimed at a foreign market and priced accordingly.

There are slight nuances to this in Kenya, mainly that the tourism infrastructure here is quite well-developed especially compared to other countries in the region, and also that I did travel with other Kenyans – hoorah (there’s a growing urban-based middle class that especially enjoy going to the coast) – but broadly speaking my initial assertion rings true.

Or at least, that’s how the tourism industry has developed in this country and that’s how it’s stuck!

In this way, your accommodation prices are likely to be comparable to countries like South Africa, Peru or Italy.

Think around $10-20 USD for a dorm bed and $25-40 USD for a private room in a hostel.

Hotel rooms start from around $65 USD and more deluxe options can easily run into hundreds of dollars a night.

In general, these are local businesses that really help enable cheaper and more lowkey forms of travel in Kenya, so I think it’s great to support them.

Most are very clean and comfortable places where you can easily meet other travellers and also score safari trip deals that are more appropriately priced for budget travellers.

If you prefer to look for a hotel or apartment however, then I highly suggest checking out the following major destinations options for some great deals…

• Accommodation in Nairobi
• Accommodation in Mombasa
• Accommodation in Nakuru
• Accommodation in Naivasha

When it comes to accommodation, you’ll also want to remember that travelling in high season is always going to involve the top price tags, as will visiting during a major holiday or festival, such as Christmas or Easter.

If you want to really work at keeping your accommodation costs down in Kenya, then a great tip is to stay in one place for longer.

By this I mean basing yourself in one city or destination for a lengthier period of time, and then simply day tripping from there.

As an example, there are several safari parks you can easily visit from Nairobi in a day and likewise from Mombasa or the southern coast.

The other top tip to keeping accommodation costs low in Kenya is to camp.

We’ll talk about this in the activities section, but in general, most safari parks offer camping and this is by far the cheapest way to enjoy some time here, especially as there’s often very little choice in between this and a luxury lodge.

I wouldn’t advise wild or free camping in Kenya, it’s best to do it either with a designated accommodation or tour provider, but within these parameters, it’s a good option.

To work out your overall accommodation costs for Kenya (or anywhere!), you simply multiply the average budget accommodation figure of say, $20 USD per night, by the number of nights you plan to spend in the country.

Et voila, you have your rough accommodation budget mapped out!

To be honest though, it’s hard for me to do this on this occasion because so much of the accommodation I booked in Kenya (especially the camping) was included as part of a safari tour and I therefore have no idea what I paid per night.

This is why working out the costs to travel somewhere like Kenya can be confusing as most people (even us hardcore budget adventurers) will end up taking at least some form of multi-day excursion.

And why not?

It really is often the best way to see some of the main attractions here.

#2 Transport in Kenya

This is another area that, when working out travel costs, can be tricky in Kenya.

And that’s because, once again, if you take any tours in Kenya, especially to safari reserves, they are likely to include transport costs, so it can be hard to ascertain what exactly the individual travel costs are.

However, as I did travel independently in parts of Kenya, I have got a reasonable grip on some of the costs of moving around this county.

First up, the cheapest way to get anywhere in Kenya is via a local bus or matatu.

The latter are minivans that ply short distances, say within a city itself or between neighbouring towns.

Normally there’s a lot of loud music and crowding involved and they can be very fun – just watch your pockets.

Trips through Nairobi on one of these cost less than $1, while ones that transport you between cities, say Nakuru and Nairobi, costs under $10.

These guys go fast and safety isn’t the best, but they are no worse than chicken buses in Central America or the marshrutkas in the Caucasus!

Otherwise, there’s also more “sophisticated” coach services that ply longer distances, say up to the north of the country, as well as the train that runs from Nairobi to Mombasa and is frequently used to get to the coast easily.

Finally, for short distances, it’s good to know that Uber operates in Kenya, and for longer stretches, there’s a domestic airline service, care of Air Kenya, that can get you to destinations like Mombasa or Lamu.

Flights can be booked for the best rates on Skyscanner , because these guys compare even budget airline options.

As an example, you’re looking at around $80 USD to get from the capital to Mombasa direct.

Otherwise, when it comes to rail and bus travel, it’s best to head to the station itself to buy a ticket and confirm the departure time – things can be a little flaky around here as you can imagine!

Of course, transport costs are going to be hugely dictated by how much you travel around Kenya and which modes of transport you use.

Buses are cheapest of course and flights are the most expensive – although booking these early will get you some good rates.

As such, a key way to keep transport costs down, if you don’t want to use local buses and just rock up on the day, is to plan your Kenya itinerary in advance so you know exactly which days you’re going where and book accordingly.

This will also allow you to book accommodation in advance and keep things cheaper there too, as you’ll be reserving spots ahead of the curve!

#3 Tour & Activity Costs in Kenya

Ok, where this is where things can really start to diverge, and also spiral, with your Kenya travel budget if you’re not careful.

And that’s because I’d say the biggest indicator of how much your Kenya trip will cost you will be based on this component – namely how many tours you take in this country, how long they last and what level of luxury they involve!

At the cheapest end, a standalone tour to one reserve near to Nairobi that has camping as its choice of accommodation is still likely to cost around $100-150 per day per person.

Generally, this will include a pick-up and drop-off, as well as 2 meals a day, secure accommodation, transport within the park and safari guides too.

When you consider all this, it’s really quite reasonable, especially given that all this will help you have the best time and see the greatest wildlife too.

On the other end of the spectrum, which I’m not really going to go into, there’s opulent luxury tours that can easily stretch into $1000’s of dollars for just a few nights.

Of course, these will have smaller group numbers, private transport and safari drive options and involve stays in boutique lodges.

If you can afford it, the sky really is the limit!

If the sky is not quite your limit however, and you’re trying to keep costs low in this country, then I’d certainly recommend minimising the number of organised activities and tours you take, because you really could go to town!

Honestly, I’d recommend reserving tours in Kenya to the places you can’t go by yourself, or you can’t get the same experience when you go by yourself – this would include scuba diving activities on the coast, hiking Mount Kenya or safari tours to parks you really want to visit (again research pays off here!)

In my opinion, these safari parks include:

• Nairobi National Park Half-Day Game Drive
• From Nairobi: Hell’s Gate National Park Full-Day Adventure
• Dhow Sailing Tour of Kisite Marine Park & Wasini Island from Mombasa
• Tsavo East & Salt Lick Lodge Safari 2-Day Tour

Taking guides or trips to these areas is a great way to experience the diversity of Kenya and dig deeper into the culture, landscape and history of this nation.

If that interests you too, then I do recommend spending some money on day trips and tours, as they will likely offer some fantastic and unforgettable experiences.

I certainly consider the money I put into tours and activities in Kenya well-spent – after all, why travel to a country if you’re not going to see the best of it?!

And when it comes to safaris or other excursions I’ve mentioned, the reality is they are very difficult, and often more costly, to do independently.

Weird, but that’s just how it works round here! Largely because companies can tap into bulk discounts and repeat deals, you simply can’t as an independent traveller,

Also it’s worth bearing in mind that if you book tours in person, last minute, you can always try to negotiate a good deal.

Likewise, if you take a longer tour, or a couple of tours with the same company, the price per day will come down.

All worth bearing in mind!

#4 Entrance Fees & Guides

In Kenya, most entrance or guide fees are included in day trips or tours you take, which means it’s likely that this section of your budget will be very low outside of those costs.

Great news if you’ve accidentally gone over budget in other areas!

For me, these charges amounted only to what I tipped guides and drivers at the end of a tour – this is the culture in Kenya and can make a real difference when it comes to what people earn.

#5 Eating & Drinking Costs in Kenya

Well hello to this category, because first up sticking to local offerings means food and drink is very cheap in Kenya.

This is because it’s the one part of the tourism offering that many local people obviously engage heavily with as well.

Ok, so I’m not talking about fancy restaurants in Nairobi, although of course they are there and attended by certain strata of Kenya society, but I’m also talking about just your average beer in a shop, local cafe or street food!

Because going local is always cheaper – local beer is the bargain of choice and you’ll likely drink a lot of it in the warm sunny climate of Kenya. Tusker is the most popular option!

Food-wise, there’s a lot of rice, beans, corn, eggs and goat if you eat as locals would – plus fish on the coast.

If you eat on the street or in a local joint, a plate will cost you just a couple of dollars…. And will fill you up!

Fresh veggies can be harder to come by – so go to supermarkets and shops for these.

Actually there are some “Western supermarkets” in more developed areas of Kenya that boast an impressive array of options, certainly in the major cities at least, so you’ll be fine.

I have to say though, even as a vegetarian, I always found something to eat in Kenya… and it wasn’t that hard!

There’s also bottles of drinking water to factor into your Kenya travel costs.

Although if you take a Lifestraw Go Water Filter Bottle as I did – this will reduce this cost to zero, thanks to the handy technology it employs that allows you to drink the tap water safely no matter where in the world you are.

#6 Miscellaneous Expenses

And finally, when it comes to your Kenya travel costs, you’ve got to factor in all those other incidental expenses like laundry (once a week should do it) and possibly a SIM and data package too.

Luckily, both these things are very cheap and readily available!

An average laundry load cost me around $4 USD and getting a tourist SIM with loads of data is possible in Kenya for around $10 USD.

I used Safaricom and found them excellent.

And don’t forget a bit of extra money for souvenir buying!

This is East Africa after all!

So…. How Much Does it Cost to Travel in Kenya?

And with all that in mind, I’m going to put my neck out here and say that you could probably travel Kenya on an average budget of around $70-110 USD a day at the very bottom end.

Some days will be less of course, but when you undertake tours, safari drives and activities (as you definitely should!), these will bump up the overall spend.

As I mentioned at the start of this article, I’m delighted to say my travel budget in Kenya was the lowest of any of the other East Africa countries I travelled at a similar time, and that’s largely because I spent longer in Kenya and didn’t move as much.

It’s also due to the fact that Rwanda is overall a more expensive country to travel, Uganda offers gorilla trekking , which is a very large spend in and of itself, and Tanzania transport costs more if you’re going to Zanzibar or up Kilimanjaro.

That said, the 1 return domestic flight I took in Kenya did hike up my budget, but luckily my saviour was the food budget, which was incredibly low as were the reasonable local bus rides and hostel rooms I opted for.

Also avoiding tours at the coast in Kenya and instead travelling Diana, Kilifi and Mombasa independently, helped keep my costs low.

I avoided Lamu for this reason too – it’s another set of expensive flights – but I’d def head there if I had the chance again!

I think you should spend at least 2 weeks in Kenya, as this allows you to see some of the best parts of this huge country in a limited time frame.

Here’s what an example budget for this timeframe might look like…

• Total Accommodation (private hostel rooms) x8 nights when not on tours = $240 USD
• Total Transport Spend (1x return domestic flight, bus, matatu and Uber rides) = $200 USD
• Total Tours and Activities (3 day Masai Mara trip & 3 day Hells Gate, Lake Naivasha & Nakuru trip with camping) = $700 USD
• Total Entrance Fees & Guides = n/a (included in tour prices)
• Total Food and Drink = $140 USD
• Other Expenses = $30 USD

Total 14 Day Trip cost= $1300 USD

Please remember this is based on a budget traveller, where much of the food, accommodation and transport costs are built into the tours and will vary wildly depending how many activities you do, whether you stay in dorms or private rooms and how much you eat, drink and shop!

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

“June to October is an excellent time for Kenya tours. During these months, the weather is generally dry (although it can get really hot in October and at the tail end of September) and most trails are open. This also coincides with the wildebeest and zebra migration in the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is the Dry season, and as it progresses, water sources for animals tend to dry up and become fewer, drawing animals in numbers to those that remain. One downside is that high-season prices apply during the Dry season months. Crowds are also larger – in some parks, the queue of safari vehicles can take away something from your experience, and some areas of the Masai Mara can be completely overwhelmed with vehicles during the migration. In the Dry season, June is one of my favorite months to visit. Visiting from November to February also has its devotees. At this time, migrating birds arrive, the rains rarely disrupt travel, and the country is transformed into a lovely shade of green. Most travelers avoid March to May because heavy rains are always possible and can transform safari trails into muddy bogs. That said, prices are lower and I visited once in April and was lucky to find very few other visitors (except for local visitors around Easter) and clear skies.”

Why visit Kenya? What are the major attractions?

“Outstanding wildlife is the main reason to visit Kenya. While many visitors come for the migration, Kenya is excellent year-round, with a large number of world-class national parks – apart from the Masai Mara, there’s Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks and Samburu National Reserve – where superb wildlife viewing is almost guaranteed. It all adds up to Kenyan safari possibilities of great variety. Kenya is Big Five territory, with healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino, but the birdlife is also outstanding, as is the cultural element – this is the land of the Maasai, Samburu, Turkana and others. The sheer number of habitats, too, make for wonderful scenery – endless horizons in the Masai Mara, tropical forests in Kakamega Forest National Reserve, the starkly beautiful parks of the north, and peerless Kilimanjaro views from Amboseli.”

What does a Kenyan safari cost?

“It all depends on what sort of safari you want and can afford. Kenya has more variety than most other African safari destinations, with excellent options from the lower end of the pricing scale (from US$200 per person per day) to luxury Kenya safaris (up to US$1,000). While accommodation is partly what will determine the price for many travelers, it can also depend on how you wish to travel between the various parks. Air transfers, usually via Nairobi, can be expensive, but dramatically reduce the amount of time you’ll spend on the road, thereby maximizing the amount of time you’ll get to spend in the parks themselves. Remember also that most Kenya safari packages will include transport, accommodation, all meals and activities (including game drives).”

How is the wildlife viewing?

“It can vary from park to park. Most of the more popular parks that you can visit on a Kenya tour – Amboseli, Masai Mara, Samburu and Lake Nakuru – have fabulous wildlife-viewing opportunities. Dense wildlife populations in all of these parks make them good all-round safari destinations that enable you to see as many animals (and different species) as you can in a short period of time. Other parks are more specialist – such as the birds and primates of Kakamega, and the sitatunga in Saiwa Swamp National Park – allowing you to tick off a hard-to-find species, usually without the crowds. And a more exclusive Kenyan safari experience is possible in the conservancies of Laikipia Plateau – you pay more, but, with the exception of Ol Pejeta Conservancy, crowds are non-existent and wildlife viewing is excellent. At most of these conservancies, you can get off-road as well, meaning that you’ll get a lot closer to the animals than you will in a national park.”

How safe is Kenya for tourists?

“For the most part, a Kenya safari is safe, but there are some important things to know. Nairobi and, to a lesser extent, some other Kenyan cities have a reputation for violent crime. I’ve spent a significant amount of time in Nairobi and elsewhere and have never once had a problem, but it does happen often enough to mean that you should always be careful and follow local advice when it comes to these cities. Another potential danger comes from traveling on the country’s roads – the accident rate is extremely high. You can minimize the danger by spending as little time as you can in Nairobi and other cities (in any case, Kenya’s charm rarely resides in its major urban centers), by never traveling at night and by flying between the parks. The danger from wild animals is minimal; most Kenya safari trips and operators have excellent safety records, and you should be fine if you follow the safety briefings and instructions from guides.”

How do I select a reliable tour operator for a Kenyan safari?

“The best way to choose a Kenya safari is to read all about the safari experiences of other travelers at SafariBookings.com – chances are that their reviews will answer many of your questions (before you’ve asked them), as well as speak to the professionalism of the various operators with whom they’ve traveled. Otherwise, it’s extremely important that you contact any tour companies with whom you are considering traveling before you make a booking, and ask any questions you may have. This could be anything from the mode of transport, frequency of meals or daily safari schedules to the languages spoken by your guide or how many other travelers will be in your vehicle. Be as specific as you can. Not all operators offer customized Kenya tours, it’s true, but there’s no substitute for being informed. What type of accommodation can I expect?

“As a general rule, the higher your Kenya safari prices, the better you can expect your accommodation to be. At the lower end, campsites are usually basic, sometimes crowded and not always in the best locations within the national parks or reserves, but they are well priced and often have ample facilities such as showers and toilets. Lodges are the mainstays of the Kenya safari scene and the quality varies considerably. Many lodges within the reserves and national parks have excellent locations but are aging and in need of renovation, while others are luxurious and recently overhauled. In tented camps, including mobile camps, you’ll sleep in large, walk-in tents – they’re like lodge rooms in terms of size but with canvas for walls and floor. Canvas tents mean that you can hear the sounds of the African night. Hopefully you won’t hear the sounds of your neighboring guests if the tents are nicely spaced. Most lodge rooms and tents of this kind have comfortable (not camp) beds, sometimes a desk and usually a private bathroom; some even have an outdoor shower with no roof but walls that protect your modesty. Particularly in tented camps, you’ll most likely need to recharge your devices not in your room but at a power station in the main public area.”

What can I expect from a safari in Kenya?

“Most days out on safari begin with a quiet African voice waking you well before sunrise. After dressing quickly, and having a coffee or tea, you head out for a few hours in a safari vehicle (with other guests, a driver, guide and sometimes a tracker) looking for wildlife – this time, and the last hours before sunset, are ideal for viewing wildlife. You’ll return to the lodge or camp mid- to late morning for a proper sit-down breakfast. A few hours of relaxation, followed by lunch, then a few hours more doing very little occupies the hottest part of the day, when even animals retreat into the shade. Afternoon tea, often known as High Tea in a nod to colonial-era safari traditions, happens around 3 PM or 3:30 PM, then it’s back out looking for wildlife until after dark. Just before sunset, you’ll stop for another safari institution, the ‘Sundowner’, when you’ll watch the sunset while nursing the drink of your choice. You arrive back in camp in time to freshen up, then it’s dinner and off to bed, before it all starts again very early the next morning.”

Kenya Safari Cost (A Detailed Guide With Examples)

If you are anything like me you must have wondered how much a safari in Kenya costs. I’ll try to answer this question to the best of my ability and give you a few examples along the way.  

The average cost of a safari in Kenya is USD $3000 for a 10-day Safari in Kenya. Budget safaris cost around $1700  while Luxury Safaris would cost as much as $10,000. These amounts do NOT include international flights, visa fees, and medical insurance. All of these safaris will have wildlife viewing and some will include time at the beach . Let me break down what you expect to pay when coming on a Kenyan Safari and different examples of tours and their cost structures.  I have lived in Kenya all my life and have visited many of the popular national parks in Kenya and this will inform the recommendations I give here.

Here is a short table summarizing the cost structures for the Safaris in Kenya.

Kindly Note: I have never had to use tours and travel companies that have organized tours in my visits to the National parks in Kenya. This is because it has always been more logical for us as Kenyans to use our own vehicles to visit the parks since its more economical and all of my visits to the different national parks could be completed within a day. This means that my advice will be a bit limited and may be overlooking some aspects. To compensate for this, I did almost a week of research when preparing for this article and contacted the tours and travels companies mentioned below to get an accurate picture of the exact costs of doing a safari in Kenya.

How Much Budget Safaris in Kenya Cost

Cost: $1,000 – $1,700.

Most budget safaris will be bare-bones and will include the essentials  that would constitute an ok safari. Accommodation for these types of trips would usually be in basic tents with basic amenities like a shower and bathroom. If you will be booked in hotels they will usually be budget hotels with no frills. 

As an example, Check out this Budget Safari by Intrepid Travel that is restricted to 18 to 29-year-olds .  It’s a budget Tour That takes you on a tour of the popular Maasai Mara and Serengeti for 9 days. Most of the nights will be spent in tents and the tour is a group tour where you share vehicles.

What they include

The amenities usually included in these kinds of budget safaris include:

• Meals : Breakfast Lunch and Supper
• Transport: By Four-wheel drive safari vehicles
•   Accommodation :  In tented camps and budget hotels
• Activities : Game drives in the national parks,   and sometimes will include visits to indigenous people like the Maasai villages. 
• Park fees : budget safaris usually include park entry fees into the cost of the safari and you will not need to worry about paying for them. 
• A professional driver/guide :   good safari companies hire professional drivers who also act as guides for your safari. 
• A ll transportation :  once the tour starts.
• Drinking water :  this is an essential one since, as I have written in this article it is not advisable for foreigners to drink tap water in Kenya.

What they don’t include 

Due to the fact that these are budget safaris, they would have very few frills and  would NOT include the following

• Transfers to and from the airport:  transfers from international airports to the start of your Safari would usually require an additional payment.
• Accommodation before and after the Safari Starts: If you will be arriving the day before your safari starts or planning to stay one or two days after your safari ends you will need to pay for the accommodation yourself.
• Local Flights : while flights are very convenient in helping you get around Kenya they are also not cheap and would not be included in most budget safaris.
• Special Meals & Drinks :  on some occasions, you may need to cater for your own drink bills or pay for any special meals that may not be within the budget of your safari.

How Much Mid Range Safaris in Kenya Cost

Cost: usd $ 1,800 – $3,900.

Most mid-range safaris in Kenya will include time at the beach.  They would come with a lot more comfort than budget safaris and are more suited for the average tourist. Accommodation is usually more comfortable and is located in hotels that are more premium and comfortable. Some would also include cultural interactions with the locals eg. visiting a Maasai Village or interacting with the local communities near the parks or beaches.

The amenities usually included in these kinds of  mid-range safaris include:

• Meals : Breakfast Lunch and Supper for the length of your safari
• Transport: By 4×4 safari vehicles and sometimes some flights are included
•   Accommodation : In hotels and/or well-equipped camps
• Game drives in less crowded vehicles
• Sometimes it will include visits to indigenous people but the Maasai villages. 
• Visit to the Kenyan Coast 
• Park fees : Usually included
• A professional driver/guide :   Essential for local knowledge and helping to spot difficult-to-spot animals.
• All transportation :  and would usually include airport transfers
• Drinking water : 

Even though you may be paying more for your safari than a budget traveler, there are few things that would not be included 

• Accommodation before and after the Safari Starts: you would still need to make your own arrangements if you will be arriving earlier than the scheduled time of the safari or spending a few days in Kenya after your safari is complete
• Flights : While some flights may be included, most Kenyan safaris would still have a lot of overland travel in a 4×4 Safari vehicle. 
• Some drinks and meals : Since many mid-range safaris would be accommodated in nice hotels and budget homes you would expect to find better food and drinks but there will be a limitation to this.

How Much Luxury Safaris in Kenya Cost

These are the top-of-the-line safari experiences and would be some of the most exclusive and high ticket Safaris.  They offer a high degree of customization and would even allow you to determine what kinds of activities you would want to have in your Safari. Accommodation would usually be in five-star hotels and lodges that are exclusive and picturesque. These would definitely include interactions with the local culture if that’s something you’re interested in and their interactions would be more intimate and exclusive. 

Since these are the most expensive safaris you expect to have in Kenya,  they would not hold anything back in terms of the amenities provided. An example of what you would expect in these safaris include: 

• International Flights (At an Extra Fee): While other safaris would not offer international flights, luxury tour experiences would include international flights but at an additional cost to you. The benefit of this is that you do not have to hassle with trying to find tickets to get you to Kenya.

Will I Enjoy a Budget Safari

So the question you may be asking yourself is, Will I enjoy a budget Safari? You may not have the budget for any safari that costs more than $1700 and you must be also counting the cost of international flights and other additional costs like travel insurance. 

The answer is yes. Although budget safaris in Kenya would not have all the bells and whistles that come with safaris that are more high-end, you will get to see animals and experience similar landscapes and sceneries as those who will be paying several thousand dollars more . The only difference will be that your accommodation will be a lot more modest and your transport a bit less fancy. 

The thing that you will need to be more careful about is what kind of company you book your budget safari with. You may be hunting for a good bargain but end up with a truly horrendous experience if you don’t take time to check the reputation of the safari company you intend to use.

Are Luxury Safaris Worth It?

Another thing you may be wondering is whether Luxury safaris are worth their price.  I have never been to a luxury safari experience and my opinion may be skewed but here it is:

While luxury safari experiences are extraordinary,  I feel that you would achieve a somewhat similar level of comfort on a mid-range safari without having to spend all that money for a luxury safari. If you have the budget for it I would highly recommend going on a luxury safari since it will be an experience of a lifetime.

Masai Mara Safari Cost

Most plan safaris will include the Maasai Mara in their itineraries . This makes Maasai Mara one of the most popular safari destinations and also one of the most expensive to visit especially during the High season. You will find the  Maasai Mara in the itineraries of Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury Safaris.

It would be difficult to place an exact price on how much it will cost just to visit the Mara since most companies bundle the Mara with other parks and you can find trips to the Mara on all tiers on the budget line.

The differences emerge in the kinds of accommodation each type of safari offers to its guests.

Budget safaris who book their guests in low-cost camps in the Maasai Mara or outside the park.  

Mid-range safaris on the other hand who book their guests in lodges and tented camps that offer more amenities than budget camps.

Luxury safaris, on the other hand, will book their guests in the most exclusive and comfortable lodges within the Maasai Mara. The Sanctuary Olonana(picture below), for instance, is located on the banks of the Mara River and has an exclusive view of beautiful stretches of the park.

Amboseli NP Safari Cost

Just like the Maasai Mara , Amboseli National Park is also very popular and would be included in many safari itineraries. I’m not able to give an exact amount of how much you expect to spend when visiting the Amboseli National Park but here is what I found,

You should expect to spend slightly more than the average tourist who visits the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru National Park since this park is slightly out of the way from the Maasai Mara – Lake Nakuru Circuit . To save time you may have to take a flight to Amboseli and this will add to the cost of visiting the park.

Most Affordable National Parks in Kenya

Most affordable parks in Kenya are the ones that are near major cities.  With these parks, you do not need to spend your nights in Safari lodges or hotels only catering to tourists. this, therefore, reduces the biggest cost to your safari experience:  accommodation. If you are on a tight budget here are the national parks we should consider visiting in Kenya:

1.  The Nairobi National Park

Located just a few minutes from the Nairobi Central Business District,  Nairobi National Park is ideal if you are on a very tight budget and/or strapped for time.

You can spend your night in one of Nairobi’s hotels and visit the park using a rental vehicle. This will greatly reduce your cost and you would not need to use a Safari company for this.

2. Lake Nakuru National Park

Located a few minutes from Nakuru town,  this is another National Park you should visit if you are on a tight budget. 

You do not need to use a safari company since you can access the Park using a saloon rental vehicle and can find accommodation within Nakuru town in a regular Hotel.

It’s important for me to mention here that Lake Nakuru National Park is not very large a nd can be viewed entirely in one day. 

Because of this, you may also want to combine it with a hike in Hell’s Gate National Park which does not have a lot of animals but does have beautiful sceneries and beautiful water cut gorges. 

Most Expensive National Parks in Kenya

The most expensive national parks in Kenya are the ones located in the most remote areas. 

This is because getting you as a traveler to those locations will cost a lot more than taking you to the more popular parks that have better-developed infrastructure.

In addition to this, the logistics of ensuring that you are comfortable in these remote parks makes it more expensive per day than some of the more high-frequented parks.  Some of the most expensive national parks in Kenya are:

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu national reserve is located quite a long way off from the popular safari circuit and this makes it a more remote park. I tried looking for proper information on pricing and the best I could find was $600 per night for one of the hotels there. 

Is using a Tour Company cheaper ?

One of the things you may be wondering about is whether using a Tours and Travel Company will be cheaper for you when going on a safari in Kenya. 

using a safari company is not necessarily cheaper than traveling on your own because these companies help in reducing the hassle of organizing all aspects of your safari yourself.

You will be billed for this service through a higher total cost of a safari than if you organize it yourself.  This makes traveling with a Tours and travels company more expensive than traveling independently and planning your safari on your own . 

This means that if you are keen on spending the least amount of money on your Safari in Kenya,  avoiding tours and travels companies will be a good idea.  

At this point, I have to warn you that although it is possible to plan your safari yourself and not use a tour company, it may not be very advisable since you will have to contend with all the variables organizing a good African safari have. 

What’s worse is that you may end up paying more than you would have paid an organized safari company. This is because you may not get the special rates and discounts safari companies receive due to the fact that they are larger customers who have the advantage of volume and high-frequency purchases.

In addition to this, As you saw in the video of my visit to Nairobi National Park,  you may end up having a lousy experience since you will not have the advantage of local knowledge and connections. I didn’t get to see as many animals as was possible at the Nairobi National park since I didn’t have a guide and I was just driving around hoping to follow someone who looked like they knew where they were going.

Most Expensive time to go on Safari

One of the most expensive times to go on safari is during the peak season of late June to late September. This is because this is the best time to see wildlife and is also the time when the great migration is happening in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. 

Most national parks in Kenya have a lot of tourists during this time and you’ll be competing for the few available rooms in the hotels and lodges . 

The Most Affordable time to go on Safari in Kenya

You can get the biggest savings if you visit Kenya in the rainy seasons of October to November and March to June.  Most of the national parks will have very wet conditions and these are not normally very ideal for spotting animals. 

The downside to this is the fact that you may not see as many animals as you would expect and, even worse, could get stuck in the mud in one of the national parks.

Alternatives to A Kenya Safari

In my research, I found that safaris to South Africa are cheaper than the ones in Kenya and you may want to consider the southern part of Africa if you are on a tight budget.

A number of the parks in South Africa have paved roads and would be easily doable with a rental car. I don’t know very much about South African safaris and you will need to do a bit of research to establish whether this would be kind of safari experience you’re looking for.

Other Expenses that add to your total Safari Budget

The price you pay to the Tours and travel companies will not be the only cost you are going to incur when coming to Kenya for your Safari

• Flights: Flights will form a significant portion of your jungle safari budget and he will need to put them into consideration when planning your Safari. Booking early will help in getting the best cost savings and you can check out International Flight Deals on Skyscanner
• Vaccinations: You need to vaccinate yourself against common illnesses here in Kenya. Diseases like malaria are common and you need to prepare yourself by getting the necessary shots and prescriptions if you have any medical condition.
• Travel Insurance: Arguably the most important investment when going on safari,  it is important that you make a good insurance policy that protects you from any risks that you may encounter on your safari. • Extra Accommodation: You may arrive a day before your safari begins or spend an extra day before your flight is scheduled to leave and you will need to pay for this accommodation. 
• Gifts and Souvenirs: You probably want to carry gifts with you when going back home to share with your friends and family.  If you have a long list of friends and family, the total cost of buying these souvenirs will cost a pretty penny. 
• Time on the Beach: as I mentioned earlier,  time on the beach may not be part of your safari package. If you are keen on visiting the beach, you will need to factor in how much it’s going to cost you to spend time in the hotels at the Kenyan coast and your fare to get there.

As you prepare for your trip to Africa, I would like to recommend a few products that would help make your life easier.

Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Please see my lengthy description on MSP to Atlanta survey. Tailbone is killing me from old hard seats. Seat would not recline and were not near exit row. Entertainment did not work properly and couldn’t use. No audio and touch screen failed. 3 plus hours of discomfort in narrower seats than previous flight not in comfort plus. Very dissatisfied and deserve comfort plus charges refunds, at the very least, for both my wife and I. The plane needs to be retired. Please feel free to contact me directly for further details.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

Oh my god! For an13 hour flight they serve you food just one time. Also don’t be thirsty they give you a little small cup of soda to drink. They seem like their goal is to feed you one so they don’t have to be bothered with you. It quite surprise for such a long flight there are several times to eat at least three and the food was well lackluster. The food and lack of offering drinks which were always hot no ice provided.

We were traveling first class. Checkin counter lady and her manager, both were in bad mood and did not treat us well about checking in the handbag. The gate agent took care of it right away. I travel Turkish twice a year in first class. No one has ever refused to check in the hand bag. Not sure, why this agent and her manager refused. Everything else was excellent.

The 787 economy was a disaster for long haul. The space was too little compared to 777 or 747. Also the extremely low tray table behind the seat made any dining effort a nightmare. However, the movies were up to date, and the food taste was good, despite of terrible serving process caused by small space.

A little bit more comfort. It’s tight space around the seats. But all else is great and a smooth flight!

0ur assigned seats were given to other individuals when we boarded the plane. We were given new boarding passes with new seats all the way at the back of the plane. The reason given to us was that there were issues with the seats. We found out that there were no issues, and someone else's were seated on those.

Good flight. Paid for seats sat the frront section of the economy. Better than rear cabin.

Flight was delayed for 9 hours. We finally arrived ved at 0435hrs instead of 1950hrs the previous day. No compensation was provided.

Apart from delay of 3 hrs in Nairobi for onward flight to Dar all fine. Looked like operational issues caused it.

I booked a round trip flight and boarded a Kenya Airways trip from New York (JFK) to Nairobi (JKIA). First flight from New York to Nairobi was uneventful with no issues. However, the return flight was beyond disappointing. To begin with I had paid an extra $60 each for premium seats (me and my wife) in economy aisle 15 (B & A). However, upon settling down in the middle seat, I noticed that the controller had been ripped off meaning I would not have access to some of the seat functionalities like the individual lighting etc. I proceeded to alert a flight attendant that the controller was missing and she politely responded to me by telling me if I need anything, to use my wife’s seat controller (on the window seat) to call for assistance and I would be assisted accordingly. I was surprised by the response that she gave as it felt like my comfort and request for a service that I paid for was undermined, but nonetheless I opted to play it nice and kept my calm. After this I engaged in a conversation with a passenger (Caucasian / White male) who sat next to me on the aisle seat. In the process of having this conversation I asked him if he had paid for his seat. He went ahead to politely tell me that he had been moved from a seat in the back by one of the flight attendants and had not paid any extra fees. During this conversation, he noticed that the charging docks were not working and he needed to charge his iPad to watch his Netflix show (it was on pause). Alarmed by this, he went ahead and flagged one of the flight attendants who without wasting any time acted astonished and as fast as lightning was able to find him a better seat a few rows in front. Please note, all the charging plugs were not working for the three seats. In summary, below are the reasons for the low rating: 1. Charging for a broken seat: Kenya Airways should not charge for a defective seat. If a seat is defective and is paid for, the airlines should work out a way to either refund the customer or move the customer to a better seat – regardless of skin color. 2. Below Par Customer Service: Do not debilitate a customer’s request especially when a paid for service is not delivered – regardless of skin color. Assuming that I am comfortable with having to either keep alerting the flight attendant or relying on my wife’s seat to perform some of the functionality I may need is ridiculous. 3. Biasness / Inequality / Prejudiced Behavior: The Caucasian/ White male was treated with more favor. Not only was he moved around to make sure he was comfortable (free of charge) but all his complaints were resolved immediately without any hesitance. On the contrary, I being a black man of African descent who had paid an additional premium for his seat, I was completely ignored and told to settle for what I got.

It has been 1 week since arriving at my destination and I still have not recieved my kite surfing bags. Office will not communicate properly on location or when my bags will arrive. No advice on what to do on luggage that has not arrived in over a week. Simply not happy with Kenya airways at the moment.

The flight staff were not very kind. I went back to get a drink, 4 of them back there chatting. They all looked at me continued to talk then they started doing stuff and one finally asked after I was standing there awhile what I needed. This happened multiple times. The movies were not the great and seemed dated. My seat squeaked every time I moved and it moved around a bit.

My flight from Nairobi to nyc. My seat made noise and moved around. The two toilets in the back didn’t work well cause you didn’t know if someone was in there cause the light didn’t work. The bathroom doors didn’t lock well either, so I walked in on someone. The crew wasn’t quick or super helpful. When I went to get something they were chatting and they would look at me, continue on with their conversation and finally I would interrupt to get a drink.

The flight attendants on this flight were incredible! One even gave me her own dinner when my special meal order wasn’t transferred due to a flight delay! She insisted and I was so grateful. That is going above and beyond! The issue I had with the flight was with Lufthansa support. I missed my connection due to a flight delay and they wouldn’t rebook online, only in person. This took a lot of time and visits to the airport waiting for a Lufthansa agent to arrive 5 hours later than posted and almost paying full-fare price for the new flights and refusal to add my special meal orders. It made for a challenging journey home and I didn’t feel valued as a customer.

If my flight from Heathrow to Nairobi had not been cancelled I would’ve been in kisumu to fly back! And I have still not had my refund! So you have my cash and I’ve got nothing in return. Wonderful!

Fare was much lower with a layover in London as I was able avoid numerous landing fees that would have been added to the ticket price had I booked a direct flight to Amsterdam.

We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

British Airways canceled our plane and gave us a new flight scheduled to leave in only three hours, so we had to drop everything and rush to the airport. The new itinerary only left us a one hour layover in Madrid, which was too short because the plane landed late and so we missed our connecting flight. We were then booked onto a flight scheduled to take off 8 hours later, and were not given any compensation or remedial measures.

Seat layout, flight/club attendant service, food variety and quality could have been better. Business class Standard is visibly low compared with 6 other airlines that we have traveled for the past two years.

Despite many attempts to work out a change, neither British Airways nor Kayak nor Chatdeal would allow us to cancel or change this flight so we lost all of the payments when we were not able to fly. Absolutely terrible customer service. We will never use either of the services again.
