There are plenty of components in your vehicle’s drivetrain, but one of the lesser-known components is the rear differential. This is mainly because, in modern vehicles, the differential is extremely reliable and doesn’t often need repairs.

However, if issues do start to crop up, it’s vital that you diagnose and correct them right away. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to diagnose a rear differential noise, as well as what you can expect if your rear differential does need repairs.

The most common rear differential noise is a whirring sound, although it’s not unheard of to have a clunking or banging sound as you accelerate. Both noises indicate worn-out gears, although a banging or clunking noise is much more severe, and you need to address it immediately.

If you do hear a whirring noise, it’s going to remind you of what a worn-out wheel bearing sounds like. In fact, it’s the exact same sound – and worn wheel bearings are far more common, which is why people often misdiagnose them.

While the whirring sound might not be as serious as a banging or clunking sound, that doesn’t mean that you can ignore it.

Finally, another sound that you might hear is a “chattering.” This happens with the teeth on the gears of your rear differential break. Not only will you hear a chattering sound if this happens, but you’ll also feel vibrations in the steering wheel.

It transfers power from the Vehicle transmission and engine to individual wheels. Instead of the wheels turning at the same rate, a differential offers more precise control over your vehicle. 

If you start hearing weird noises from the wheels or start feeling unusual vibrations, check it out. They are likely to be the signs of a bad differential. Continuous driving with a bad front differential can lead to an accident.

Rear-wheel-drive vehicles are equipped with a rear differential. Front-wheel drives are fitted with a front differential or transaxle, which has the same function as differentials. All-wheel-drive (AWD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles are equipped with both front and rear differentials.

Moreover, when the differential requires service or maintenance, the axle itself also requires service and inspection for possible damage that can result from a bad rear axle bearing. Simply put, excessive noise is a common bad rear axle shaft symptom.

Differential failure due to lack of lubrication:

First, you need to make sure there are no leaks around the rear differential gasket. Next, check for leaks in the rear axle area. Leaks can occur at the pinion gear seals, and when the leak is bad enough, dirt and oil will accumulate right below the carrier, pinion gear, or at the brake system areas.

Differential overheating:

Differential overheating can be caused by using the wrong type of oil, lack of lubrication, worn gears, excessive bearing preload, backlash between the ring and pinion, or overloading when hauling a heavy trailer or loading equipment. Differential overheating is a significant sign of low differential fluid .

Wrong oil type:

Drive safely:

This is the third one in the Journey now. Original one went out then they got a replacement and it came in broken. Really? Then they put in another one and that one went out. Now I just got it back today. The last one lasted less than a month. When asked who is going to buy it with two rear differential replaced with in a month, the response was I understand your problem. How did this become my problem just because I bought a Dodge Lemon.

Thursday Feb 26 2015 ¿ 6:00 pm noticed engine light on Friday Feb 27 - 8:00 am take car to village Chrysler ¿ ajax for assessment ¿ make appointment for sat Feb 28 2015 at 1:30 pm to assess engine light on ¿ ok to drive car per village Chrysler ¿ ajax service advisor. Friday Feb 27 - 8:00 pm ¿ during drive to/from work: computer message: 1. ¿¿remote start disable� 2. Noticed car will not shift into 6th gear on hwy. Home from work: noticed engine oil on driveway, pull in and check oil ¿ no oil on dip stick, engine oil all over engine and ground. Unknowingly I drove the car for ~150 km with no oil! sat Feb 28 - 1:00 pm ¿ add 3 liters of oil to take car to village Chrysler ¿ ajax service results: 1. Engine light codes: no explanation of codes from village Chrysler ¿ ajax service advisor. A. Code: p06dd ¿ stored ¿ engine oil pressure control circuit stuck off b. B156d-00 ¿ stored ¿ low voltage differential signal (lvds) video cable- 2. No details of my explanation of my sequence of events on service order! 3. Oil adapter housing leaking (cracked ¿ manufacture design issue) 4. Replaced adapter housing: part#: 68105583-aa ¿ c/w associated parts under warranty - known issues with cracking housing. 5. When asked if any engine damage while driving with no oil - village Chrysler ¿ ajax said guaranteed no engine damage because at least one liter on oil was still circulating in engine! bs. 1. Now i¿m concerned this will happen again and possibly cause a fire while driving on the hwy. . . 2. Plausible damage to engine as a result of unknowingly driving all day with no oil in engine! 3. I don¿t feel safe in this car!.

    Consider it part of routine maintenance of an older vehicle to monitor any known leaks and address them when needed. You may never need too before the time comes to replace it.
