Amsterdam_ Hidden Gems & Highlights Guided Bike Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 703 reviews )

“Great experience, despite the intermittent hail! Our bikes were comfortable and easy to ride even though we were very our of practice, and our guide was fantastic and knowledgeable.” Rachel, Getyourguide

Bikes are ubiquitous in Amsterdam, with just shy of a million of these environmentally friendly vehicles to be found in the city. But not many people dare to get in the saddle and peddle like a true Amsterdammer — and it’s exactly this that We Bike Amsterdam is striving to change, one brilliantly executed bike tour at a time.

Forget the bustling streets lining the city’s famous canals, with this tour you’ll head into the side streets and back alleys coming to grips with a side of Amsterdam that only the locals get to see. But don’t worry, you’ll still visit many of the city’s most famous attractions — just by taking the road less peddled.

Visiting Amsterdam and not taking a bicycle tour is like going to the Heineken Experience and not enjoying a beer. And as far as bicycle tours in The Dutch capital go, you can’t beat We Bike Amsterdam. The trips are expertly curated and the guide ensures that everyone has the best time possible, all while exploring a part of the city that usually remains hidden.

2 – Anne Frank Guided Walking Tour through Amsterdam’s Jewish Quarter

Anne Frank Guided Walking Tour through Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 5610 reviews )

“We strongly recommend this experience if you visit Amsterdam for the first time. Our guide, Giovanni, was able to transmit to the group his passion while telling the sad story of Anne Frank’s life.” Lorenzo, Viator

Anne Frank is arguably one of Amsterdam’s most famous residents and her honest account of life under Nazi occupation still serves as a warning against fascism and racism today. It’s therefore fitting that the home she once hid in has been immortalized as one of the best museums in Amsterdam — still drawing thousands of visitors to its humble facade in the Jewish Quarter .

360 Amsterdam Tours offers one of the best excursions to learn more about her tragic life. Conducted as a walking tour, a compassionate guide will retrace the steps of young Anne, illuminating the modern-day streets of Amsterdam with anecdotes from her life and diary.

It’s not easy to relay the story around Anne’s life with the necessary pathos while still ensuring a memorable experience, but that is not a problem on this tour. The guide will make Anne’s story and day-to-day existence come to life around you, allowing you to see the humanity in this important historical figure.

Amsterdam Red Light District & Coffee Shop Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 4.5/5 ( 2141 reviews )

“Our guide gave us a wonderful tour of the city highlighting all of the historic elements and describing them beautifully, very knowledgeable.” Anne, Viator

The infamous neighborhood known as the Red Light District is regarded as one of the best tourist attractions in Amsterdam . These notorious streets played an important role in Dutch society, posing serious questions that helped shape the Netherlands’ modern outlook.

Trigger Tours is one of the best companies when it comes to exploring the Red Light District and these tours offer an unconventional, no-holds-barred look at these famous streets. Their mission to entertain and inform rather than to shock and scandalize is one that many other tour operators should do well to follow.

On the whole, a great tour that offers a wonderfully enlightening experience. The tour provides a fascinating look at recreational drug use and prostitution in Amsterdam — while always considering the human element in the narrative.

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 184 reviews )

“We loved the historical facts, it was fun and interestingly presented. The food was amazing, the locations were stunning and our guide was patient and caring.” Karine, Getyourguide

11 – Amsterdam: Open Boat Canal Cruise with Local Guide

Amsterdam_ Open Boat Canal Cruise with Local Guide

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 804 reviews )

“We really enjoyed our cruise with Maxim. It was beautiful and because the boat wasn’t too big it felt personal and special. It was quite entertaining and he shared some interesting background facts.” Rebekah, Getyourguide

Not all canal cruises and boat tours in Amsterdam are created equally. Generally, you can choose between the larger cruises with an audio guide or a voyage on a smaller vessel with a guide on board. While the latter option allows for a much more intimate setting and access to a passionate local, they also tend to be quite expensive.

Luckily, that’s not the case for this open boat tour from KINboat , and you’ll be able to explore Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed canals in an unforgettable manner.

It’s hard to find another tour in Amsterdam that can compete with this open-boat canal cruise when it comes to value for money. The boat is large without feeling impersonal and the commentary from the guide allowed for great insight into Amsterdam’s history.

12 – Amsterdam: Enjoy a Dutch Cheese-Tasting Session with Wine

Amsterdam_ Enjoy a Dutch Cheese-Tasting Session with Wine

Rating: ⭐️ 4.7/5 ( 276 reviews )

“Our tour host Killian was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the cheese and history. Very insightful tour, and I learned a few things indeed!” Rachel, Getyourguide

If you visit Amsterdam without trying the local cheeses, did you really visit Amsterdam? To say that the Dutch like their fermented dairy products is an understatement, a sentiment supported by the number of cheese shops throughout the capital.

One of the most famous of these purveyors of cheesy goodness is the Old Amsterdam Cheese Store , and it’s also the driving force behind this cheese and wine tour in Amsterdam . Learn how some of the world’s favorite cheeses are made and try some that you’ll only find in Amsterdam — each of them perfectly paired with a selected wine.

This is a true hidden gem of an experience and was wonderfully presented by the local cheesemaker. His love for his craft is infectious and guests will enjoy all of the delectable cheeses on offer — and the wine will help to bring many of the tastes to the forefront.

13 – Amsterdam: Guided Ganja Walking Tour of Coffee Shops

Amsterdam_ Guided Ganja Walking Tour of Coffee Shops

Rating: ⭐️ 4.3/5 ( 1893 reviews )

“This tour was exceptional. I didn’t have the confidence or knowledge to go to coffee shops myself as a solo traveller. Sophie was the perfect guide, knowledgeable, welcoming and a joy to socialise with. The staff in the coffee shop were brilliant and fully explained how to enjoy the experience.” Ben, Getyourguide

With a name like the Guided Ganja Walking tour, it’s pretty obvious what’s the main focus of the outing. Coffee Shops are ever present throughout the Dutch capital and this excursion from Oranje Umbrella explores some of the best smoking joints that Amsterdam has to offer.

It also offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into this vibrant subculture, while answering many questions that most people don’t want to ask. Throughout the trip, you’ll learn about the history of marijuana in the Netherlands, how it became legalized and the do’s and don’ts when visiting one of these fine establishments.

If you’re curious about the marijuana subculture in Amsterdam, then this is the perfect tour for you. It’s a great ice breaker, endowing travelers with the knowledge and confidence to go to coffee shops on their own. The tour guide is brilliant, taking time to explain the way that marijuana should be enjoyed while in the city and he patiently answers any questions that you may have.

14 – #1 Craft Beer & Brewery Tour, Brew Bus Amsterdam

#1 Craft Beer & Brewery Tour, Brew Bus Amsterdam

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 63 reviews )

“This was a lot of fun! The breweries were unique, the beer was great, the bus was comfortable, and the tour guides were very friendly and provided many interesting facts about Amsterdam during the tour.” Lucas, Viator

Many people would consider Amsterdam the spiritual home of Dutch beer, with both Heineken and Amstel hailing from the city. However, the local beer scene isn’t exclusively about big corporate brands.

Craft beer is as popular in the Dutch capital as it is in the rest of the world — and this outing from the aptly named Brew Bus Amsterdam aims to leave participants totally refreshed by the end. In total, you’ll be able to visit 7 breweries where you’ll get to enjoy the decidedly Dutch take on craft favorites. There’s also an option to include a visit to the much-vaunted Heineken Experience, to see how the big boys brew.

Calling all beer lovers! This tour is unmissable and you’ll go away utterly refreshed, and somewhat fuzzy. But, of course, it’s not only about drinking — instead this tour allows you to get up close to the brewing process and may even get to ask a local brewer questions about their craft.

Our top 5 things to do in Amsterdam

Our Amsterdam holidays show you all the iconic Amsterdam attractions like the pretty canals and famous architecture, along with the hidden gems of this captivating city.

Amsterdam Museum

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the history of Amsterdam, you’ve got to visit the Amsterdam Museum. Rembrandt House Museum

Hailed as one of the world’s greatest artists, there’s no better place to learn about Rembrandt van Rijn than the Rembrandt House Museum. As the former home where Rembrandt lived and painted for many years, the building has been restored to its 17th-century styling and the museum displays a number of Rembrandt’s masterpieces.

Stedelijk Museum

Located a short stroll from the iconic Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, you have to make a stop at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam’s top museum of contemporary and modern art. It’s made with all kinds of fillings like meat, cheese, rice, pasta, mushrooms or vegetables melded with mashed potatoes and a thick béchamel sauce, which is then breaded and deep-fried to crispy perfection.

If you want to try a real Dutch breakfast, it’s got to be hagelslag. It's similar to sprinkles (but definitely not the same!), scattered over a piece of buttered bread and enjoyed by children and adults alike. Chocolate is the most common flavour and it’s sure to become your new favourite morning ritual in Amsterdam.

There are few things more Dutch than the smell of poffertjes wafting through the air and you can’t resist tucking into a cone of these small, fluffy pancakes topped with dripping butter and powdered sugar. Whether you eat them as a snack or dessert, it’s the perfect sweet treat to enjoy on your Amsterdam holiday.

Welcome to Amsterdam To the city on the freedom!

This diverse city offers a fantastic opportunity to get swept away by history, leisure and culture in every corner: unique neighborhoods, canals, art and more; catapulting into one of the top spots of the most desirable destinations in Europe and with good reason.

And located in the heart of The Netherlands, magical Ámsterdam opens its doors to the world from land and sea. Since Ámsterda holds the leading port in transit of cruise ships across the Sea of the North as well as air transit, the recently renovated and modern Ámsterdam Schipol airport welcomes more than 58 million visitors a year and is easily accessible – just 15 minutes by train from the center of the city.

Amsterdam, The Venice of North

Stumbling into the city, Ámsterdam intricately unfolds before our eyes with open arms: warmth in every form, beauty and endless fun. Rich in history, it has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. Without fail you will lose yourself in its history, dating all the way back to the Middle Edge era. It is a must to get lost in the streets of the oldest region, the Gothic neighbourhood, where the first inhabitants built their walls of defense. Today, centuries later, we can walk their steps and discover the narrow alleys, hidden plazas and take in the abundance of Gothic structures such as the Oude Kerk.

Layover in Amsterdam

In case you have a five- or six-hour layover at Amsterdam Airport and don’t know what to do, you needn’t look further! During the Airport Transit City Tour, your private chauffeur will show you all the highlights of Amsterdam you really don’t want to miss.

Why wait at Schiphol Airport if you could be floating through the romantic canals of the Venice of the North or discovering how the Red Light District earned its name?

This three-hour Amsterdam city tour is completely customizable to fit your personal wishes; you may also book extra time if you happen to have a longer stopover in the Amsterdam airport.

Highlights of the city

You also might want to discover the history of the young Jewish woman Anne Frank, who went into hiding in a house on one of Amsterdam’s canals during the Second World War.

  • Chevron down More Information

The capital city of the Netherlands started as a small fishing village towards the end of the 12th century. Amsterdam’s canals, which gave the city the nickname ‘Venice of the North,’ served as transportation routes back in the days.

Due to smart developments in trade, its port became Europe’s hotspot in the 17th century, a time referred to as the Golden Age during which the city of Amsterdam was blossoming in all aspects.

During the Amsterdam City Tour, the wealthy and rich history of the city is to be seen wherever you turn your head. Indeed, it is not without reason that the city is home to two UNESCO Heritage spots.

Enjoy Amsterdam

Get the most out of your time in Amsterdam, even during a layover. Have lunch or dinner at the SkyLounge while enjoying the spectacular skyline of the city of lights.

At the end of the Airport Transit City Tour, you will be brought back to Amsterdam Airport where you will check in for your next flight.

You’ll probably be sitting in the airplane with people who have been waiting at the airport during their transit, while you benefitted from your short layover and explored the best places in Amsterdam.

  • RobertT470 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Very informative tour, Skip the harbor cruise Our private tour of 14 people was planned well. Harold, our guide was personable and knowledgeable. We enjoyed seeing the many sides of Rotterdam and faces of its architecture. Meeting him in town, since there was a free bus provided from our cruise port to city center was a good idea, since there was no backtracking. Having come in through the harbor on our cruise ship this Spido cruise was not necessary. While the boat was comfortable and fast, the audio tour on speakers throughout was difficult to follow/ keep interest. It was in several languages and quite monotoned. With limited time in the city, we would have enjoyed some time on our own to explore, ( as did one couple with foresight to leave /skip harbor cruise ) but instead had to return to our ship shortly after tour ended. • Deborah L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exploring hidden areas of Haarlem (I hope this is the tour I booked – it’s the only one I see come up in my various searches online here at Trip Advisor.) This 2-hour private walking tour was worth every penny. Daphne was fabulous. I failed to read the latest email about the meet-up location, so we got started a bit late, but she persisted and found me. Immediately, she asked what my interests were and what I wanted to get out of the tour. I wanted a more local, less touristy experience, and she delivered. She first showed me the parking garage for bikes beneath the train station, which was quite impressive. It reminded me of how we park cars in New York City. I now have a greater appreciation for the Danish people and their bike culture. Daphne was extremely knowledgeable about Haarlem, its history, and the places we visited. She led me into secret courtyards and garden spaces other tourists would not find on their own. We entered the Bakenes Church that is undergoing an archeological excavation of myriad treasures from the past and took photos of the vibrant stained-glass windows designed by comic book artists. We walked out to the De Adriaan Windmill, which I so wanted to see and was not disappointed. The Grote Kerk was our last stop, and its grandeur and beauty met my expectations. These are just a few highlights of my tour. This excursion was a wonderful experience and Daphne seemed more like a friend than a tour guide. In fact, after the tour, which was supposed to be two hours but was closer to three, she joined me for lunch before we headed our separate ways. I spent another hour or so exploring Haarlem on my own before heading back to Amsterdam and was confident doing so in large part because of Daphne’s earlier guidance. I recommend this tour if you are someone who wants to go deeper and have a more intimate experience discovering a new city, in this instance, the lovely city of Haarlem. About Amsterdam

Including tips for the best time to visit amsterdam.

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has been a rich cultural hub for centuries thanks to travelers and traders. Located in North Holland, the city is famous for its iconic canal system, distinctive row houses, and eclectic range of museums, including the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum.

Great public transit options include buses and streetcars, but bicycles are the quintessential mode of transportation in Amsterdam. The 250 miles of bike paths and 8,000 bike parking spaces make exploring the city on two wheels easy and fun.

The city's medieval center, or "Centrum," showcases many points of interest synonymous with Amsterdam tourism, including canals, traditional architecture, and the famous nightlife of the Red Light District. If you're visiting during tulip season, stop by Keukenhof's botanical garden in mid-April for its vibrant collection of blooming flowers.

A variety of accommodations can be found across the city, from high-end hotels to cozy homestays and hostels. Schiphol—Amsterdam’s main airport—is just 9 miles southwest of the city and is connected by regular train services from the city center to the main terminal.

Amsterdam reviews

What other travelers say about amsterdam.

Easy to avoid the cliches and the seedier parts of town.

March 4, 2024

Easy to avoid the cliches and the seedier parts of town. Lose yourself in the side streets away from the red light area. It is probably the friendliest safest city I have every visited and so easy to navigate. Definitely take a boat trip to get a different perspective of the stunning architecture. Stumbled across some fabulous coffee shops, boutiques and bars. Lonely Planet's Pocket Guide was really helpful.

Sharon

Amsterdam in February was a delightful experience.

March 3, 2024

Amsterdam in February was a delightful experience. Despite the chilly weather, the city's charm was evident in its picturesque canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. Over five days, I explored iconic landmarks like Rijksmuseum, and Van Gogh Museum, and Heineken Experience is a MUST. Immersing myself in art and history. The cozy cafes and bustling markets offered delicious Dutch treats, while evening strolls along the illuminated canals created unforgettable memories. The city's efficient transportation system made it easy to navigate, allowing me to venture beyond the city center to discover hidden gems. Overall, my five-day stay in Amsterdam during February was a captivating blend of culture, history, and beauty.

February 28, 2024

Unfortunately I booked the return train tickets by Eurostar from London to Amsterdam. The return the train was cancelled. The Eurostar left passengers without accommodation and chance to book the train next day. Amsterdam is more expensive the London. It has completely changed as use to be. More young people are coming for weed and everywhere is too crowded.

February 26, 2024

Unfortunately I can’t give a review of the centre of Amsterdam, as I was there to see a concert at the Ziggo Dome, so stayed at a nearby hotel. We had planned to explore, but the weather was horrible so we had to give it a miss! We do plan to return though, to have a proper look round. What I can say is that the Dutch people are very warm, cheerful and friendly. We felt very welcome there.

February 25, 2024

We really enjoyed the chilled out atmosphere in all the bars and restaurants we visited, we took our young daughter with us and she loved trying various cakes and pastries that are sold in the bakeries. The people there are so polite and helpful and not once did we see any trouble anywhere. We will definitely visit again. 2-3 days is perfect to take in a few museum trips etc or just roam around taking in the sights.

Keith

Good transport links.

February 24, 2024

Good transport links. Lots to see. Did plenty of walking too. Lots of friendly people. Easy to book attractions but must book time slots to ensure entrance.. Van Gogh and Rembrant museums really good. Our Lord in the Attic small but very interesting. We bought IAmsterdam card online prior to arrival. Picked it up at Shop in Central Station and used the card a lot.

What other guests say about our tours and locals

Amazing guide and an even better person !!

"Olga was ahead of time for our tour. She communicated the location information and was specific. The tour started off really well and she provided a lot of information. It was a cold and rainy morning in Amsterdam and we stopped for some coffee and then the ice broke We found this amazing ,funny and passionate lady who made us fall in love with her city all over again She had a ton of information and I learnt a lot about her city after being here many times previously.. she is funny, informative and very knowledgeable Can’t wait to come back to Amsterdam and have her show her city to us again Thanks Olga "

local Olga

Tour with a friend!

"We booked a 3 hour tour with Estella around Amsterdam. She was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. At the end of the tour, we requested to see one more site and she was more than happy to go over the time. She bought us stroopwaffle when we passed a store that she said had phenomenal baked goods and it did not disappoint! We walked around all of the great spots of Amsterdam but she also showed us some of her favorite hidden gems. She tailored the tour to us based off of what our interests were and what we wanted to see. By the end of the tour she felt like a true friend. We highly recommend this tour with Estella! 10/10"

local Estella

Great Tour Exploring Amsterdam

"We had a wonderful tour of Amsterdam with Anna. She is super knowledgeable about the city and we enjoyed a pleasant stroll along the canals soaking up the history. I highly recommend a tour of Amsterdam with Anna - this is a very worthwhile way to spend a few hours exploring Amsterdam's best sites, while learning a ton about how the city has grown and developed over the years. Thanks so much for a great day Anna!"

local Anna

"This is our third tour with Anna over two trip to the Netherlands and once again we were happy! She has so much knowledge and her stories bring the art to life! Will definitely take another tour with Anna next time we’re back. She also gave us great food recommendations for after our tour. "

guest Tina

Adventure mixed with enlightening history

"Martin was both entertaining and knowledgeable about the ins and outs of Amsterdam’s winding cobblestone streets. We learned both the history and secrets of Amsterdam and its world renowned red light district as we wound our way through listening to how Amsterdam has changed over the years and what events have shaped it into what it is today. "

local Marten

Culenery Tour

"We had a great tour with Arunabha, the blend of street/ migrant and traditional Dutch flavours were excellent. He has a wealth of knowledge on the history of the cuisine and its origins. The information about Amsterdams history was also informative ."

Delighted & filled with Amsterdam stories

"She was warm and full of great stories about Amsterdam. Enthusiastic about showing off that region. The fact that she has an outside view is a plus, while having that surprising capacity of bringing inside information. When asked questions, she would go much deeper and be very generous with details, with a fresh and humble way. She is very sensitive to making sure we are delighted. After living 25 years in t n Netherlands, my friend whine I was with said he learned a lot. And appreciated it. We highly recommend her. "

local Anna

guest Raj

"We had a very good tour with Marten in Rijksmuseum - He managed to inspire children and adults alike."

guest S

Olga went above and beyond - book her!

"We had such a wonderful time with Olga, who really went above and beyond on our tour. We had an 8-hour layover in Amsterdam, and I reached out to Olga to ask if it would be possible to schedule a tour with her in that window and make sure we still got back to the airport with plenty of time to catch our next flight. One small thing...our flight landed at 6am! Olga responded immediately and said we could take the train into Amsterdam (super easy) or she could meet us at the airport. We took the train in, met up with her seamlessly at. 7am, and she took us on a 3-hour tour that was a highlight of our trip even though we only spent a few hours in Amsterdam. Olga shared a ton of interesting facts, clearly loves the work she does and the city she does it in, and we are so glad that we found With Locals and booked Olga. We highly recommend her - thank you thank you Olga. And have an AMAZING time in South Africa and then hurry back to share Amsterdam with more visitors!! "

Enjoy the Best of the Amsterdam Like a Local

Having a short getaway in Amsterdam? We love this city! It's full of awesome places to visit, good food and great activities. Here's our list of the top 10 things to do in Amsterdam. Hope you enjoy it and tell us more about you favorite thing to do here!

A group of tourists on a boat in Amsterdam

Get a personalized boat tour

The canal belt is the best representation of the beautiful Amsterdam views, used for many postcards and travel books and breathtaking to visit. You can get a personalized private both at daytime and nighttime, have a themed tour or just enjoy a general highlight visit with a local guide. Some types of awesome tours you can enjoy are: Golden Age tour (historic city center), Architecture Wonders tour (contemporary and ancient), Nightlife tour (cool bars and clubs), City Highlights tour and much more. You will probably be able to see most of the city while also enjoying some snacks and a good conversation.

You can find out many fascinating facts about the city by asking your local host to tell you more about the streets, buildings and local lifestyle, all of them are excited to do that.

A local guide showing a tourists the Albert Cuyp Markt in Amsterdam

Shop through the local markets

You can’t visit Amsterdam without going through some of its markets! Some examples are the Albert Cuyp markt, known for affordable grocery, the weekly Noordermarkt farmers market, full of organic goodies and Waterlooplein flea market, a wonder for the vintage lovers.

The most popular markets are yes, you guessed it, the flower ones. One of which is the Bloemenmarkt, once a floating market. It’s true that is has become a more touristic place, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't visit it. You can find here all kinds of tulips in Spring and bulbs all year-round, as well as other small flower themed souvenirs. The bulbs are easily portable, so you can bring some home, wherever you live. Most of the prices are also affordable, you can shop around without many worries. Now hurry up and add the market in your things to do in Amsterdam list!

A group of tourists enjoying Dutch pancakes outside on a balcony in Amsterdam

Eat a homemade meal with a local

There’s no better way to meet local people and get to know the Dutch culture than by enjoying a meal together with some locals. You get to taste the local cuisine or something more exotic and chat for a few hours with friendly people willing to give you a glimpse on their life.

Pick a nice Dutch family dinner, try out some polenta with rabbit stew, or Dutch boerenkoolstamppot and have a lovely time with the children. If you want a more international atmosphere, choose a dinner party with Amsterdam locals that have different cultural backgrounds and like sharing their love for food and great conversations. Another option would be an organic vegan dinner with some delicious dishes made out of a variety of vegetables, tempeh and wheat meat.

Don’t be hesitant in sharing your own unique stories and ask as many questions about the local culture and lifestyle as you wish!

A local guide showing two tourists the Jordaan Neighbourhood in Amsterdam

Lose yourself in the Jordaan neighborhood

The Jordaan neighborhood is probably the most famous and charming area you could visit. Being on of the top things do in Amsterdam makes it a bit crowded though, keep that in mind! It was created as an expansion for the city in the early 17 century and was known as the working-class bastion. Most of the immigrants and refugees settled there when they arrived in Amsterdam, so the neighborhood was always full of people.

Now, the area is popular for its restaurants, specialty shops, cafes, art galleries, antiques shops, lovely gardens and bars. You should definitely have a local guide with you on the way, so he or she can show you all the hidden courtyards, highlights & other things to do! Your host will also explain to you the story of the all black painted houses and many other cool historical facts regarding political refugees.

The I amsterdam sign in front of the Rijksmuseum

Explore the museums

Art is something that isn't missing at all in the city, so you might as well enjoy it as much as you can. There are tons of art related things to do in Amsterdam, but let's have a look at the best ones out there. Go to the Museumplein where you can find all the big museums and the famous I Amsterdam letters.

Start at the Rijksmuseum, the biggest one, known for its hits, like Rembrandt's and Vermeer's paintings. Other museums worth seeing there are the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum. Another fun one is the EYE film museum where you can enjoy 100 movie clips and see the futuristic film cabins on display. If you're into history, also take a look at the Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum), full of stories from the Nazi occupation and how that period looked like.

Local tip Discover a local gem: Museum Van Loon in Amsterdam. Immerse in canal house living and captivating art all under one roof!

An evening view of the Red Light District in Amsterdam

See the red light district differently

The Red Light District is one of the most popular Amsterdam highlights and very well known on the international stage. You might have heard good or bad things about it until now, but don’t be fooled by what you hear, you must visit it yourself to actually get the right idea about the place and its rumors. It’s situated by the Central Station and is also the oldest part of the city. You will find cheesy sex shops with outrageous toys, but also gorgeous buildings and lots of antique places.

We recommend a lovely night time tour in the neighborhood, where you can see the historical buildings and bridges, and believe it or not have a romantic and magical sight. The area gets a bad reputation, but with the right guide you can see the district in a totally unexpected way and enjoy many unique things to do there.

Local tip Avoid taking photos of the workers in the windows, as it's a privacy thing. Explore with respect, remember it's a neighborhood.

A local guide and a tourist on a bike crossing a bridge in Amsterdam

Get on your bike

There’s no place better to travel by bike than The Netherlands, especially Amsterdam! Bicycles have been the most used way of transportation in this city for a very long time, there are actually 800 thousands bikes, which is more than the amount of citizens here! Cycling here is a safe and super refreshing thing to do in Amsterdam! Just keep in mind the general rules: don’t cycle right next to each other, use the night lights and always lock your bike up.

A more unique type of bike tour is a urban farming one, where you can also visit various hotspots of Amsterdam urban farming featuring local and sustainably-produced goods. You could also enjoy some authentic snacks at the end of your amazing trip.

A family having a picnic in the Vondelpark, Amsterdam

Have a Picnic in the Vondelpark

Amsterdam has over 30 parks, so you won’t have any problem in finding the right spot for a picnic. The weather is quite unpredictable, so do take a umbrella with you! As for the perfect place, we’ll go with VondelPark which is the largest green space. People gather there for drinks, food or just to enjoy a sunny day. In the summer, there are also many live concerts held in the park, so depending on your time of visit, you could be entertained by a great band as well.

The most cozy things you could do there is have a very nice picnic with your friends or some locals with whom you want to share a nice chat. Buy a few snacks and some Cava (Spanish champagne, we know it’s not local, but Dutch people love it) and have a blast.

Local tip The parks in Amsterdam are also a perfect escape from the busy city for families with kids

The front of Theatre the Movies in Amsterdam

Visit “The Movies” theatre

Are you big movie fan? Then a visit to the movie theater called “The Movies” will be worth it! Started in 1912, this is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam. Its interior is awesomely designed with an art-deco touch that brings you back to older times. You’re not going to find the latest commercial movies there, like block busters from Hollywood, but you’ll surely get a look at alternative films that are less known by the big public and much more profound and artistic.

The theatre also has a restaurant and a bar, so you can grab something to eat while you enjoy the cool atmosphere. The coolest thing about is that you can hire a four screen room for a private movie party!

A local showing a tourists a street in Amsterdam next to a canal

Go to the Nine Little Streets (De Negen Straatjes)

As the name suggests, the Nine Little Streets, forms an area with small charming streets, with some canal bridges views and many small boutiques, cafes and restaurants. You’ll notice that it’s one of the most lively neighborhoods in the city and it looks absolutely exquisite. In this area you can find over 200 shops with vintage clothes, design shops, handmade cosmetics, unique jewelry and many things to do.

In your shopping journey, start by making a list of things you would like to buy, so you won’t get lost in the many wonders you’ll see at each of the small enchanting shops. If you are on a budget, try some of the vintage boutiques or tell your local guide to show you some of the most affordable shops around. If you don’t plan to buy anything, just enjoy the view of all the beautiful designs and delightful eating spots.

Two locals biking in Amsterdam

Visit De Pijp

One of the more authentic things to do in Amsterdam is to visit some of its neighborhoods. South of the city center, you will find De Pijp. It’s one of the traditional Amsterdam neighbourhoods with characteristic architectures. There’s plenty of history your guide can tell you about. For example, this area used to be a polder but the ground was raised everywhere, except for the Sarphati park in the middle.

You can still see the old ground level of the area and when it rains, you’ll see why the ground was raised everywhere else; the park will be flooded. There are also plenty of restaurants, so ask your guide to bring you to his or her favourite spot.

A view on the canal and boats in Amsterdam

Take a look at the unique Amsterdam West

The last thing on your list of things to do in Amsterdam should be to visit Amsterdam West. This is a completely different part of town. Until a few years ago, it wasn’t a safe place to be. However, lately it’s been becoming hip and happening. Nowhere in town will you find the influences of other cultures as much as you will here. It’s the place to find tropical fruits and exotic dishes.

While wondering around, your guide can tell you about other (former) parts of The Netherlands. Did you know they have very exotic, sunny islands in the Caribbean? And that they have tight links to Surinam? Amsterdam West is where you will find all these influences.
