Netflix’s New Series "The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" Is Giving Us the Travel Inspiration We Need

Here are our favorite featured destinations.

netflix's the world's most amazing vacation rentals features the hale 'ae kai in kauai, hawaii

Below, House Beautiful details everything you need to know about five of the properties, including ones in Georgia, Indonesia, Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii—along with insight from each of the hosts. To see all of the many sites in the series, head over to Netflix —and plan your next vacation accordingly!

Alpaca Treehouse, Atlanta, Georgia

one of the properties from netflix's the world's most amazing vacation rentals

The Alpaca Treehouse in Atlanta, Georgia is one of few properties in The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals that’s located in the United States. “You never would expect a fully shrouded treehouse in a forest of bamboo would ever exist just a few minutes from downtown Atlanta, but it does," co-host Megan Batoon tells House Beautiful. "With alpacas and llamas walking around as you’re eating your breakfast, you don’t have to go far to experience something wild and surprising.”

Fellow co-host Jo Franco reveals that “the host of this property, Kara, built everything, from the actual treehouse, to the alpaca and llama sanctuary, in the spirit of repurposing. She reclaimed all of the materials used to make the treehouse from thrift stores, giving the rental a funky energy filled with history and stories to tell.”

Additionally, Kara rescued the animals that roam the grounds. “They're now living their best lives on this farm that doubles as the front yard for guests of the treehouse, eating as many carrots as they're fed—pack more just in case," advises Franco.

Butterfly Camaya Bali, Bali, Indonesia

one of the properties from netflix's the world's most amazing vacation rentals

“If heaven is made out of bamboo, it's the Butterfly Camaya Bali ,” Franco tells us. “The entire stay made me feel like I was a princess in a Balinese fairy tale. Plus, getting to put my feet in the actual mud of the rice terraces and stumbling upon a pond with hundreds of rose petals connected me to the land in a way I'll never forget.”

Batoon was also smitten with this property: “Probably the most visually and aesthetically impressive stay on the show in my opinion would be Butterfly Camaya," she says. "From acres of verdant plants, to flower petal baths, and dreamy bamboo architecture, this place had it all for a design-obsessed traveler or anyone looking for a dream-worthy stay with a backdrop of beauty.”

Quetzalcoatl’s Nest, Naucalpan de Juárez, Mexico

one of the properties from netflix's the world's most amazing vacation rentals

Located in Naucalpan de Juárez, Mexico, Quetzalcoatl’s Nest is a futuristic design haven like no other. Luis D. Ortiz tells House Beautiful that “this was one of my favorite properties because we lived inside of somebody's work of art that went beyond just a home.” Franco adds that this space looks as if “Tim Burton, Salvator Dalí, and Willy Wonka went into an architectural collaboration.”

This structure was designed by Mexican architect Javier Senosiain, who “took on the project after other developers gave up on building in such tricky terrain,” reveals Franco. “Not only did he succeed, but his solution to working with nature—and celebrating it—makes him a genius, in my opinion,” the co-host adds. “The snake house is without a doubt much more than just the house. From the mosaic gates welcoming you into your movie-like stay, to walking down the steps and entering the mouth of a snake that decorates the entrance of a natural cave, it's hard to believe you're still on planet earth.”

By renting this property, you will also be granted access to “acres and acres of a perfectly manicured landscape, a greenhouse, and art installations scattered around the grounds," adds Franco.

Sitka Lighthouse, Sitka, Alaska

one of the properties from netflix's the world's most amazing vacation rentals

If you’re the resident chef amongst your friends, the Sitka Lighthouse in Sitka, Alaska might just be the rental property of your dreams, as it offers “one of the coolest culinary experiences,” says Batoon. “The hosts have commercial fishing boat connections and had fresh King Salmon delivered straight to the lighthouse that I cooked for dinner—try and compete with that, Postmates!”

For Franco, this lighthouse boasts a special connection that ties back to some years ago. “Years ago, I was reading a travel magazine on a plane and saw this cheeky red and white lighthouse engulfed by a sea of fog on its own island somewhere in Alaska.” She adds, “The photo stuck out in my mind, and my gut said, "I'm going to go there one day." I just had no idea it would be while filming a Netflix show about the world's best places to stay on vacation.”

Fortunately, the co-host says the Sitka Lighthouse did not disappoint her anticipation. “By the end of the trip, after eating King Salmon from a commercial fishing boat, soaking in a hot tub while spotting sea lions, and running around the top of our own lighthouse for the night, [fellow co-hosts] Megan and Luis were convinced the Sitka Lighthouse gave other private islands a run for their money.”

Hale 'Ae Kai, Kauai, Hawaii

one of the properties from netflix's the world's most amazing vacation rentals

Traveling to Hawaii is certainly a common bucket list adventure (with good reason!), and Kauai’s Hale ‘Ae Kai is definitely a spot you’re going to want to stay at while checking this state off of your list. Ortiz says this spot is one of “of the best waterfront views you’ll feel more than see,” while Franco shares it’s “one of the most luxurious of luxury stays.”

Hale ‘Ae Kai was actually the first property filmed for The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals , and Batoon reveals she remembers “running over to Jo’s cabin after wrapping for the day and we laid outside in the warm Hawaii night sky and I saw my first shooting star. It was a perfect start to this entire experience.”

Franco adds, “We'd be outdoors most of the day because the property is designed to include and embrace nature—the outside blends with the inside, giving you the ultimate vacation feeling.”

This property is a bit costly, so Franco says “if you ever get a chance to wrangle together enough people to pay $14,000 a night for this luxury experience on steroids, I promise, you won't forget it.”

WATCH: This New Netflix Series Takes You Inside the World's Most Amazing Vacation Home Rentals

"This experience opened my eyes to all of the gems around the world and showed me that the stay could be the destination," Megan Batoon, one of the show's three hosts, tells PEOPLE exclusively

Dreaming of getting back out there and exploring the world again? A new Netflix travel show might just be the inspiration you need!

The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals , premiering on the streaming service on June 18, takes viewers inside some of the wildest homes that are available to rent around the world. Think: the best of the best on Airbnb , Vrbo and more.

The trailer for the show, above, dropped Wednesday morning and gives viewers a peek at the adventures that await as the three hosts, Million Dollar Listing New York 's Luis D. Ortiz and content creators Megan Batoon and Jo Franco, bounce around between affordable treehouses, exclusive private islands, gourmet food-focused getaways and so much more.

"Prior to filming the show, when I traveled for work, I only stayed in hotels," Batoon, who also hosts the comedy podcast Just a Tip with Megan Batoon , tells PEOPLE exclusively. "This experience opened my eyes to all of the gems around the world and showed me that the stay could be the destination."

She adds: "All three hosts are so different, and it was such a pleasure to not only see the world, but see it in three distinct ways through each of our eyes."

In addition to the properties themselves, the show will also focus on the different experiences that the vacation rentals offer — from high-thrill activities to unique transportation to interacting with the locals — that you may not get at a traditional hotel.

"The beauty about staying in our vacation rentals is that it's not just about the house, it's about what you get access to by staying in the house," Franco, who is the CEO of Shut Up and Go, an online community of travelers, explains in the trailer.

The hosts also aim to show viewers the options that are available at every budget — while also giving a peek at the most luxurious stays out there, because sometimes it's fun to dream!

Be sure to watch through the trailer to see the most "extra" splurge that Ortiz, who knows the life of luxury from his work as a real estate agent, surprises his other costars with.

The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals premieres on Netflix on Friday, June 18.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals’ On Netflix, Where 3 Travelers Pick Unique, Cheap And Luxurious Rentals All Over The World

Where to Stream:

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘On the Roam’ on Max, Jason Momoa's Indulgent, Endearing Travel Series

The idea behind The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals is that hosts Luis D. Ortiz, Jo Franco and Megan Batoon visit accommodations available for rent around the world. Each host is tasked with a different kind of rental to look for; Ortiz seeks out high luxury rentals, Batoon seeks rentals that are affordable but give a lot of bang for the buck, and Franco looks for unique accommodations, ones that are either in unusual locations or tied to interesting local experiences.

THE WORLD’S MOST AMAZING VACATION RENTALS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: “Are you ready to travel the world once again?” says host Louis D. Ortiz over shots of the vacation spots visited during the season. “We’re going to show you the most amazing way to do it.”

The Gist: While many of the episodes will be more based on a theme than a location, the first episode takes place in Bali. Near the city of Ubud, the trio visits a four-story bird-nest-like structure, which was Batoon’s find; it’s more or less part of a hostel that serves a communal meal and has a cocktail hour with all of the hostel’s guests. But it’s the nicest-looking hostel you’ll ever see, but Jo still gives the tip to wear flip-flops in the gorgeously-tiled communal showers.

Next up is Jo’s pick, a set of cottages owned by a local village chief. The cottages themselves are beautiful, and have a view of the rice fields nearby. But the chief also brings them to a Galungan Festival ceremony, which gives them firsthand experience with one of the biggest spiritual festivals in Indonesia.

Luis’ pick, a massive villa in the beach resort town of Seminyak, is big enough for parties of 200 people. The three of them tour the huge villa, do some yoga on surfboards in the pool, get massages and host a small dinner party. At the end of the episode, each host describes his or her favorite experience.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? While  The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals  tries to show travelers doing local experiences tries to evoke an Anthony Bourdain kind of vibe, but the production feels more like E!’s old travel series  Wild On… than anything else.

Our Take: Despite its attempts at trying to be informative, The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals  is pure eye candy. And that’s OK with us. The producers of the series have taken pains to put the locations where they shoot in the best light, using drone shots and other techniques to give viewers an idea of what they might see and experience if they went to these locations themselves.

That’s the most successful aspect of the show. The lush scenery made us want to spend some time in Bali during the fall, when the trio of hosts were there. The presence of the hosts is what we question. Don’t get us wrong: Ortiz, Batoon and Franco all are personable and are open to expanding their minds through interactions with local residents. The idea is that Ortiz, a former securities broker (and Million Dollar Listing: New York cast member), has the line on luxury, Franco, who has her own YouTube travel channel, is the most experienced at finding unique accommodations and that Batoon, ostensibly a design expert, is less experienced.

But all three seemed to go through each venue they visited acting like American tourists, saying “Nice!” and “Wow!” and “Look at this!” a lot, but not making much of an effort to really get to know the area in which they were staying. At least that’s what the first episode showed. It was mostly the three of them oohing and ahhing at where they were staying and not a ton of interaction with locals. Even when they were at the Galungan festival ceremony, they felt more like people checking an experience off a bucket list than people really absorbing themselves in what they were experiencing.

It would be easy to say that the show would work better without hosts, but then it would be just another clip show that you can see on the Travel Channel or another basic cable network any day of the week. Having the three hosts not only is an attempt to connect this kind of show to an aspirational millennial audience, but it also gives the perspective of pleasant surprise and enjoyment that you might experience if you were there.

But don’t expect a Bourdain-style rumination on what the country or people have been through;  Vacation Rentals comes off more like an infomercial than anything else. But at least it’s a good-looking infomercial.

Sex and Skin: Nothing.

Parting Shot: With shots of the three hosts relaxing at the luxury spot, we hear Megan say, “We really saw the best of Bali. And that’s what we came here to do!”

Sleeper Star: As we said, the photography in this series it top-notch, and really shows how beautiful each destination is.

Most Pilot-y Line: If we heard someone say “Nice!” one more time, we were going to rip what was left of our hair right out of our heads.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Yes,  The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals is as light as a feather, and you’ll likely forget all about an episode right after watching it. But the photography is pretty and the destinations are interesting enough to be a light watch in between heavier shows.

World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals and Fresh, Fried, and Crispy offer great Netflix escapes

World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals and Fresh, Fried, and Crispy offer great Netflix escapes

In the 2000s, I’d often turn to reruns of The Golden Girls to keep me company in my studio apartment, and to the Travel Channel to transport me someplace else. Whether I was watching Samantha Brown explore Great Hotels , learning from Anthony Bourdain’s curiosity on No Reservations , or just watching a glorified infomercial about holiday decorating at Walt Disney World, I felt like I was traveling from my couch.

Today, I’d only tune in to the Travel Channel if I wanted the shit scared out of me. That’s not because I’m scared of ghosts, but because I’m terrified that the network has been completely taken over by non-stop paranormal TV. Travel Channel has completely stopped exploring the world, and now just pretends to see things that don’t exist.

There are certainly plenty of other great travel reality TV shows , and some appalling ones too, but what I think I’ve really missed are the light and airy travel reality TV of Great Hotels or Xtreme Waterparks : just a quick dip into another place for a moment, that maybe gives me an idea of a place I’d like to visit someday. (For the record, the original Travel Channel shows are on Discovery+ now, under the Travel Channel section, after you scroll past “Ghost Encounters,” “Unexplained Phenomena,” “Mysteries,” and “Legends & Monsters.”)

Thankfully, Netflix has just premiered two brand-new shows that deliver exactly what I’ve been missing: The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals and Fresh, Fried, and Crispy each have quick, roughly half-hour episodes that are perfect little escapes via the TV. My reviews and overviews of each show are below.

Fresh, Fried, and Crispy is a warm bath in canola oil

Daymon Scott “Daym Drops” Patterson with the ube french toast made by chef Magnolia Magat, co-owner of Truffles N’ Bacon Cafe in Las Vegas

On Fresh, Fried, and Crispy , Daymon Scott “Daym” Patterson—who’s known as Daym Drops on YouTube , where he is “the face of fast food,” as he describes himself—travels the United States. In each city, he tries some of its best fried food, interacting with chefs and tasting what they’ve made. It’s a show more in the tradition of Diners, Dive-Ins, and Drives than No Reservations , but it’s very effective.

The cinematography of the cities and people looks great, but it’s the way the food and frying is photographed that made me drool immediately and want to go splash my face with canola oil. There are the requisite slow-motion shots of food, but grease splatter has never been so sexy. Just wait until a something battered is dropped into a vat of oil, immediately surrounded by bubbles, or sparkles as it’s lifted out of hot fat. There’s also an occasional shot of a cross-section of what looks like a glass fryer filmed in a studio. It’s b-roll, but manages to make floating in scalding oil look quite appealing.

Fried shrimp prepared by chef Katherine Mackay

The show works because of Daym Drops, whose looks of ecstasy as he eats communicate exactly what we need to know about how the food tastes. Watching other people eat—and listening to them chew, especially—isn’t my favorite pastime, but his pleasure and enthusiasm for food and people is infectious, whether he’s eating or asking questions. There isn’t much by way of a takeaway besides the existence of these places, but I certainly enjoyed being introduced to them.

That’s in part because there’s a lot of playfulness. In the first episode, Daym Drops holds up arancini—a fried ball with risotto, rice and cheese—to the camera, which focuses on it. “See this little power squeeze that I’m giving that thing right there? That interior right there is gonna be all type of flavor for my face and I think [clicks tongue] I’m ready for it.” At his second stop in St. Louis, a vegan bakery, he gets emotional about a vegan chicken sandwich. “That chicken shouldn’t be that good,” he says, pretending to walk off the set. “Ain’t no way in the world vegan food tastes this good.” But it does taste that good, and Daymon makes sure we understand and experience it alongside him, even while watching TV.

World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals visits luxury, budget, and unique properties

Megan, Jo, and Luis look up at a treehouse room at a modern hostel in Bali on World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals

The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals follows three people as they tour and stay overnight at three different places in each episode. There’s not a hotel nor a chain restaurant in sight, but they make all of their visits and experiences feel accessible, comfortable, and appealing.

Our three hosts are former Million Dollar Listing: New York cast member Luis D. Ortiz and YouTubers/social media influencers Jo Franco and Megan Batoon. The credits introduce Megan’s expertise as “design,” Jo as “travel,” and Luis as “real estate,” but in every episode, each of them introduces one property: a luxury location from Luis, a “unique” property from Jo, and a budget property from Megan.

The series is beautifully photographed, from interiors to the views, offering attainable real estate porn, since all of these places are ostensibly rentable. (Whether their availability and prices stay the same after international exposure on Netflix remains to be seen; a disclaimer at the end of every episode even warns viewers—well, those who stick around to watch all of the credits—that “Prices, availability, and property amenities subject to change at any time.”)

The first episode, “Best of Bali,” focuses on three places in Bali, but most of the other episodes are themed, so they criss-cross countries or the world to visit different places. That’s an unfortunate choice, as the Bali episode was by far my favorite, just because of the way it showed different parts of the same area, and I was hoping for more of that. Instead, the other episodes are a little disorienting, flinging us around the world, such as from Japan to Mexico to Massachusetts.

The episodes are quick, but while there isn’t a whole lot of depth, The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals managed to make me feel like I spent a night in each location, and learned something about the property and the community. There is a lot of information packed into its 32- or 34-minutes, from prices to local activities. Some of that is delivered in the moment and some via voice-over, and there’s even more information from on-screen notes, which are sometimes useful and sometimes not (“95 percent of American travelers want a unique food experience”).

But The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals effectively transported me to these places. I especially appreciated its focus on highlighting travel that doesn’t involve chain hotels, just as I appreciated how Fresh, Fried, and Crispy highlights family-owned restaurants and local institutions instead of trips to McDonalds. Not that there’s anything wrong with chain hotels or McDonalds, but the world has so much more to offer than just the familiar and predictable. While the TV shows are not exactly breaking new ground, I’m glad they both exist to highlight places that will likely be new to most viewers.

There is absolutely no sign of the hell the world has been through the past 18 months in either show—I’m not actually sure when they were filmed, since there’s not a mask in sight in any of the episodes I watched—but that allowed the places to be both aspirational and within reach. When people are fully vaccinated and feel comfortable being back on the road, both shows give us something to try, or at least something engaging to watch when we need a quick escape.

A Complete List Of The Accessible Vacation Rentals From Netflix’s Hottest New Travel Show

Chloe Caldwell

With the rise of platforms like Airbnb, trendy new vacation properties are popping up in every corner of the world. Hotels are great, but now more than ever travelers are searching for more unique accommodations (even if just for the badass Instagram photos ). Bespoke rentals offer a more intimate lodging experience that’s personalized to your style and preferences. You can find everything from cozy cabins to party boats and themed houses. Hell, you can even stay in a treehouse. Hence, the inspiration behind Netflix’s latest travel hit The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals .

The Netflix Original Series — hosted by millennial wanderlusters Megan Batoon and Jo Franco plus Bravo star and realtor Luis D. Orti z — takes viewers around the world to tour must-visit vacation rentals in both sought after and unexpected locations. It’s basically a cross between real estate heaven and a high-def travel vlog. The hosts stay in a budget, unique, and luxury vacation rental in every episode following a specific theme. Although the luxury properties featured on the show are fun to daydream about, many of them are exclusive to celebrities and the one percent. So we’re sticking to the mostly affordable (but still totally cool!) options for now.

From a “birdnest” tower in Bali to an igloo in Finland, you can book any of the vacation rentals from the show for your next adventure. Read on for a complete list and maybe check some of these spots out yourself once you get back on that open road — just click on the prices to book.

Not to mention the bragging rights you get for sleeping in a birdnest.

Yes, you can stay in an actual igloo. How cool is that (no pun intended)? But be sure to pack your heaviest coat because you’re going to be sleeping in below-freezing temperatures in an igloo. The chilly night’s sleep is totally worth it, though. Your stay at the ranch includes access to snowshoeing, dog sledding, and a warm base camp building where you can have a hot shower and breakfast. You can also defrost in the property’s traditional wood-heated sauna.

Danville Treehouse in Orlando, Florida

Price: $230 per night

Make your childhood dreams come true by staying in this wacky treetop yurt. The owner built the entire structure out of repurposed items. There’s a hot tub made out of a jet engine cowling, a fire tower stairway from 1926, and even a fully functioning elevator made to look like the inside of a tree trunk. Eight-year-old me is losing her sh*t just thinking about this. Guests are also invited to the owner’s studio, which is basically a colorful wonderland of his artistic imagination.

Even the Host of Netflix's 'World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals' Learned a Lot About Traveling While Filming

"I really got out of my comfort travel zone. My mind is now more open," Megan Batoon told T+L.

Although the light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel may be upon us when it comes to traveling, we could always use some wanderlust inspiration in the form of an adventurous TV show.

Cue Netflix's new series, "The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" hosted by content creators Megan Batoon and Jo Franco and Bravo star Luis D. Ortiz. Through the eyes of the three hosts, viewers get to experience an array of amazing rental properties for every budget and every travel style.

In an interview with Travel + Leisure, YouTube star Batoon, explained how filming the show really opened her eyes to the unique options out there when it comes to accommodations — especially as someone who is used to traveling for work.

"I really got out of my comfort travel zone," she said. "My mind is now more open. You can find a property that feels across the country but is only two hours away from where you live! There are so many little gems lurking around the corner."

Filming began in crowded pre-pandemic Bali in January 2020 but then resumed again last summer. The series is currently available to stream.

From a treehouse in Atlanta on an alpaca farm to a cabin in Hawaii with a private waterfall to a snake-shaped apartment in Mexico City, the show helps the audience navigate their options and what they want to get out of their next trip — while swooning over some truly beautiful properties.

Plus, all of the rentals featured on the show are available!

As for her favorite properties, Batoon, who provided tips for those on a tighter budget on the show, did love one of the high-end properties on a private island in the Bahamas (but can you blame her?)

Waking up in the "bed of marshmallow pillows" in her secluded room ($15,000 per night) was one of the best things she ever felt, she recalled. However, she also immensely enjoyed sleeping in a little bamboo pod in Bali (only $24 per night) and meeting people from all over the world at communal dinners.

"All of the properties were unique in some way whether that be the location or the amenities or the experience," she told T+L.

The show also highlights the experiences in these destinations — whether it be activities, culture, or dining — a key point Batoon says to consider in the planning process.

"It comes down to intention when traveling," she explained. "Do I want a spa day or to feel like a kid again and be in a treehouse? Do you want to feel inspired and go to a bunch of museums or be somewhere with great nightlife or do you want to do absolutely nothing and just calm down? That is what travelers need to be asking themselves. This trip changed the definition of vacation for me."

Not many people can say they've gone from a ski chalet in Japan to a culinary school in the mountains of Mexico to the Berkshires in search of the ultimate 'foodie getaway,' but that's just what the hosts of  'The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals'  do in an episode devoted to 'Gourmet Stays.'

The Berkshires — more specifically its farm-to-table food scene and a unique vacation rental, The Playhouse, in Lee — are front and center in the last third of episode six of the new travel show, which debuted on Netflix on Friday, June 18.

Netflix travel show features Berkshires farm-to-table food scene, unique vacation rental

Not many people can say they've gone from a ski chalet in Japan to a culinary school in the mountains of Mexico to the Berkshires in search of the ultimate "foodie getaway," but that's just what the hosts of "The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" do in an episode devoted to "Gourmet Stays."

The show follows Luis D. Ortiz, of "Million Dollar Listing," and content creators Megan Batoon and Jo Franco, as they travel the globe, exploring vacation rental properties that range from affordable tree houses to exclusive private islands. Each of the eight episodes in the series features three sites — a luxury spot selected by Ortiz; a budget-friendly site picked by Batoon and a unique rental chosen by Franco.

"Welcome to Lee, Massachusetts. This is classic New England," Franco says as the trio drive through downtown Lee, on their way The Playhouse, on the former estate of George Westinghouse. "For my unique property, we're going back in time to The Berkshires in Massachusetts, the heart of New England's farm-to-table cuisine."

"I love driving through these fields knowing our food is going to come from this here soil," she says.

Batoon, questions, why, if they are going back in time, they are arriving in a Tesla?

"Because, we're staying in a place where Nikola Tesla and [George] Westinghouse used to hang out. They're the fathers of [AC] electricity so I had to pay homage to Tesla," Franco says as they pull up in front of The Playhouse at Foxhollow in Lee. Here, they meet up with James Gop, of Heirloom Fire , a sustainably-minded, fire-based catering events company that uses cooking methods from the late 1800s. With Gop, the trio travel to nearby High Lawn Farm and Taft Farms to select ingredients that will be used in a dinner being created on-site at The Playhouse.

"We have amazing food. We have amazing farmers. We also have incredible properties like this one. We have amazing culinary experiences. We have access to everything you could possibly want in life so you have to appreciate it and slow down," Gop says during his initial visit with the show's hosts.

During the segment, Gop takes the group to select cheese at High Lawn Farm and pick vegetables at Taft Farms  in Great Barrington.

For Gop, exposing the Berkshires to a large audience is a blessing, but one that comes with anxiety that he's revealing a secret he shouldn't.

"To be honest, I am conflicted. I love The Berkshires and take a piece of it wherever Heirloom Fire travels. So much of our design and focus is inspired by the beautiful place I call home," Gop said in an email. "On one hand, I want to keep all of the unknown spaces and splendor to myself but at the same time I know how special they are and they deserve to be shared. I never want this place to lose its beauty."

Originally built by Westinghouse, The Playhouse once served as a theater space for his estate, which was later sold to Margaret Vanderbilt, the widow of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt. At one time, its guests included Tesla, President William McKinley and Lord Kelvin.

"This is why foodies love this place," Franco says as the three tour the 7,000-square-foot house. "Look at how much space you have to work with. If this isn't the biggest invitation to want to cook, I don’t know what is."

The Playhouse, she says, can sleep up to 20 people in its six bedrooms. There's also five full bathrooms, a living room, patio, deck, a second kitchen and in-house yoga studio. The property rents, on average for $1,200 a night.

"These people really understand lighting, which is rare," Ortiz says during the tour.

The Playhouse was renovated, beginning in 2014, when Daniel Dus, managing partner of Shared Estates , purchased the property with the intention of renovating it for a private living space. He would learn the property would need major structural renovations and restoration work. Two years later, when the work was complete, Dus was living in another part of the country and decided to list it on VRBO. It soon became the No. 1 luxury vacation rental in the Berkshires on VRBO and the model for Shared Estates, which now specializes in high-end luxury rental properties.

"I'm impressed at how well the producers, Critical Content, captured the essence of what makes the Berkshires special, including its history," Dus said in an email. "The Playhouse was built by George Westinghouse in the 1880s, and barely touched until our team's gut renovation started in 2014. It needed so much work, it took almost two years to complete. So proud of my team, and the Berkshires."

Dus sold the property in November 2020 for $1.29 million, after the episode segment was filmed, but the property is still available for vacation rentals through VRBO.

"The added value here is huge; we’re staying in a historical landmark, literally 2 hours away from New York City, so you can get away with a group of friends or family and have an amazing culinary experience," Franco said, driving home the reason picking The Berkshires as her unique vacation rental.

Megan Batoon Reveals If She Felt Her Hit Netflix Travel Series Was ‘Limited’ By The Pandemic

'The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals' host and DIY designer Megan Batoon spoke with HL EXCLUSIVELY about filming before and during a pandemic, the next place on her travel list, and more.

Megan Batoon

Host and DIY designer Megan Batoon had a once-in-a-lifetime experience co-hosting The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals , which is now available on Netflix. With Jo Franco and Luis D. Ortiz , Megan traveled all over the world from the Bahamas to Finland to Bali. Together, they proved that you can vacation around the world on any budget.

HollywoodLife chatted EXCLUSIVELY with Megan about filming such an expansive show just before the COVID-19 pandemic and during the pandemic. She also revealed one change she’d like to make if there is a season 2, who she told about her secret adventures, and more. Read our full Q&A below:

Megan Batoon

Other than masks and protocol, did you feel a noticeable difference in your experiences in traveling pre-COVID and during COVID? Megan Batoon: Aside from the masks, there really wasn’t much of a difference while traveling. You still get to try new foods, see new places, get lost in the streets. It’s good to know that a worldwide pandemic doesn’t impact the essence of travel, or at least how I personally like to explore new places.

All of the places you visited were so beautiful in their own way, but is there one place you know you’re going back to? Megan Batoon: Probably the Bahamas. I’ve been previously throughout my life because it was close enough to my home state Florida. But I saw it in such a different way on the show, I mean, a luxury private island is about as different of an experience than I ever had growing up. There was a secret sandbar that we rode jet skis to that absolutely took my breath away and I would love to go back and spend hours just laying on the sand as waves surround me in what feels like the middle of nowhere.

Is there one place you’d like to visit again because you felt like you could do more in a post-pandemic visit? Megan Batoon: Surprisingly, I don’t think the destinations we went to were limited by the pandemic the way we timed it out. Plus, I’m such an introverted traveler that I wouldn’t want to be around huge crowds of people. I’d love to revisit Caangu in Bali because it had such a lively heartbeat. Maybe I’ll visit again, maybe I’ll move there — we’ll see!

Is there a new place you’re itching to visit now? Megan Batoon: In the show, we visited Niseko, Japan, which is a ski town that had outrageously good food. We went to the same restaurant that Anthony Bourdain visited and ate across from a Soba Master as he prepared our meals. It was such an incredible introduction to Japan, but I’d love to make a few other spots to see the variety of what Japan has to offer, namely Izu Peninsula for the white sand beaches and Kobe for the beef as I mainly travel for food.

Megan Batoon

What’s something that you learned about yourself as a person as you traveled to all these different places? Megan Batoon: I felt like with every new place we traveled to, my mind was opened to another level. Before this project, I’d only traveled for work and I never got to experience the cultures or excursions since I was either on stage, on set, or in a hotel. I was exposed to so many different ways of living, dishes, uses of design materials. It was a year long experiential field trip. I am so grateful to have boarded my first flight one person and to land back in LA as an elevated and more worldly version of who I was at the start.

Is there anything design-wise that you loved so much that you’ve incorporated into your home? Megan Batoon: More so than a specific design element, I’ve taken notes for my future rental property projects of what makes a stay feel special. After seeing properties all over the world for three different budgets, I’ve developed a keen sense of what really makes someone feel like they’re in a home while on the road. I’m super excited to design destinations that transport you while delivering all of the creature comforts one would look for while vacationing.

How tough was it to keep this show a secret for over a year — is there anyone you told? Megan Batoon: I told my parents (so they wouldn’t worry) and best friends (to watch my cats) but told them they weren’t allowed to tell anyone. It was the longest kept secret I’ve had to keep under wraps — well, second-longest. *wink*

If the show were to get a season 2, would you make any changes to the series? Megan Batoon: I’d love if we were able to get a time extension to be around 40 minutes to show the colossal amount of fun we had while staying in the properties. There was so much hilarious footage that will live on in our memories forever, but it would make for an incredible special edition or spinoff show. (This is where I would @ Netflix if we were on Twitter.)

Do you still hang out with Jo and Luis? Have you planned your next adventure together? Megan Batoon: Luis and I text often and Jo visits LA frequently, so we get to reconnect every few months and it feels like home. We don’t have any plans to get back together as of now but hopefully if there is a season 2 we’ll pick back up right where we left off!

The Truth About Megan Batoon From World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals

World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals Megan Batoon

Are you in the mood for going on a vacation like no other while you spend your nights sleeping in something that offers more flair than a Motel 6? If you answered "Yes," to that question, you need to pay attention to one of the most anticipated Netflix reality series to debut in 2021 — "World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals." The first season offers a glimpse of the kinds of places you can visit, and it's all brought to you by a trio of fun, personable hosts.

One of the people taking you through the international journey is Megan Batoon. Along with Luis D. Ortiz and Jo Franco, she tracks down some of the most luxurious rentals worldwide. Some of them even work for a budget price, so you can have a one-of-a-kind adventure without breaking the bank. Batoon is a suitable host, seeing how she knows how to have a good time, as evidenced from her past. Here's everything you need to know about the media personality that may not receive a mention in her new series.

Her passion remains dancing

Megan Batoon has worn numerous hats over the years, but her career in the entertainment industry is all due to her passion for dancing at the end of the day. She's practiced dancing for quite a long time, and when she initially uploaded videos to YouTube, it was to showcase her talent. Batoon made content for choreography she developed herself, and it allowed her to develop a sizable following over the years.

In an interview with Tubefilter , Batoon spoke about how dancing set her on the path she's still on: "I had initially used YouTube as a place to keep footage of dance classes. Once I moved out to Los Angeles and became friends with some other creators in the space (D-Trix and Ryan Higa ), I was compelled to make content that wasn't just dance-centric, and started putting my personality online." In the beginning, Batoon's videos were lucky to break 100,000 views, but now, she regularly receives millions of eyeballs checking in to see what she's up to next.

She hesitated to post her first video to YouTube

You only get one chance to make an excellent first impression, and that's a lesson Megan Batoon learned the hard way. She wasn't happy with putting something subpar for the world to see, and she spoke with Business Insider about the grueling process of ensuring her first sketch was just right. As she put it, "I didn't post my first video for three weeks after I filmed it. I edited it every day until I thought it was good enough." The video in question was titled "Shark Week themed cooking video," and little did she know it would go on to lead her into co-hosting her own Netflix series.

It's easy to assume someone like Batoon was an overnight sensation when in actuality, she worked hard to hone her craft, especially seeing how she dipped her toes into several different YouTube niches. Most creators stick with one category, like "cooking" or "vlogging." Batoon stretches her legs and posts both dancing and comedic videos, sometimes simultaneously. It was a move that ultimately paid off, and now, she gets hundreds of thousands of views on each video she posts.

She's an actor, too

Megan Batoon's career took off when she moved from her home in Florida to Los Angeles. After this move, she began uploaded videos to YouTube, but that wasn't the only place fans could find her. She soon started appearing in various films and TV series, with her first acting credit coming from her playing a dancer in " Step Up Revolution ." Her other credits include "Anthony Ma Presents ...," "Date-a-Max," and "Everything Before Us."

Batoon likes to keep busy, so she hasn't acted too often over the last few years, but naturally, you can still see her pop up on your screen when you tune in to Netflix's "World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals." It's safe to say she's not acting when she travels everywhere from Alaska to the Caribbean and remains amazed at all of the beautiful places to stay while visiting. Hopefully, the reality series raises her profile even further, and she continues showing off her dance moves in a litany of projects to come.

She also has a podcast

Between her YouTube channel, film appearances, and new Netflix series, Megan Batoon has been incredibly busy over the last decade. As if that wasn't enough, she also started a podcast, " Just a Tip with Megan Batoon ," where she meets up with other dancers and media personalities to talk about the industry and their tips for making it through this crazy ride called "life." She releases new episodes bi-weekly, and some of the subjects you can expect to come up include finding romance, following your passion, and getting in touch with your spiritual side.

Batoon met up with the hosts of Windy City LIVE to talk about her latest endeavor. While it was one more pot to put on the stove, the content creator wouldn't have had it any other way: "You get to just like talk to people, and that's all we want. We want connection. We want to laugh. We want to be with each other." She continues releasing new episodes, which you can find anywhere podcasts are available.

She's the first YouTube star to partner with Nike

From all of this, it's clear Megan Batoon is a woman of many talents. However, she also holds a unique distinction in the legacy of YouTube-based ad campaigns. Specifically, she's the first content creator to land an endorsement deal with Nike (via Tubefilter ). She partnered with the shoe manufacturer in 2017 to promote its new line of Nike Air VaporMax. As a dancer, it makes sense she'd need a solid pair of shoes to keep her comfortable while performing. Batoon also ran a half-marathon in the promotion of the footwear.

In an interview with Mediakix, she spoke about the journey from making little videos on YouTube to landing sponsorship deals: "I learned that being loyal and staying true to who you are will always result in long-lasting and genuine partnerships." With all of these opportunities, Batoon's next endeavor could be something we don't see coming, and we'd be ecstatic about that.

If you've been itching to book a far-flung vacation to an over-the-top vacation rental —say, one shaped like a snake with a stained-glass coated room that makes you feel like you're inside a kaleidoscope—Netflix's new travel show will have you whipping out your credit card before you can say The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals . The show, which premiered on June 18, follows three hosts—Jo Franco, Megan Batoon, and Luis D. Ortiz—as they track down luxurious, unique, and budget vacation rentals, all bookable on sites like Airbnb and Vrbo, around the world.

But it's more than just your average travel show—primarily because it adds two female hosts to the ever-growing (but still too small) list of women in the space. It also was filmed, in part, amid the pandemic, forcing the hosts to look local, at places like a Montana cattle ranch and a floating Miami mansion.

We sat down with super-traveler and polyglot Franco , the host in charge of finding the most eccentric rental options, to chat about that pivot to domestic destinations, what it's been like bringing new perspectives into the travel space, and some of her favorite rentals from the show.

You and your co-hosts filmed before the pandemic and then had to pause production last year. How did that impact the show, and those of you working on it?

You can tell in the show, like in Bali and Japan , that we were filming pre-pandemic. And then we had to take a four month break before we got back on the road. As a result of the pandemic, we rerouted to show options that we could travel safely to nearby [like Atlanta or Hawaii]. The filming was pretty wild, though. We're actually sleeping in these properties. You see shows like The World's Most Extraordinary Homes , where they build homes or show rentals, but you never see the host sleep and wake up in the property. Imagine filming a show for Netflix, and you're getting ready in an RV , right? I loved that. In some of the shots, I'm like, dang, I have my braids in, my retainer in, and my night creams on. And we're showing that because that's the truth of travel. The show's polished, it's beautiful—but we really wanted to convey the experience that you get when you travel.

When you travel on your own, what types of stays are you looking to book?

I've actually lived in tons of Airbnb before, all over the world. I'm one of those travelers that would rather go back to the same place 100 times and really live in that place. I've done that in Rome and Athens , in London and Paris , in São Paulo and Rio —all over. When I look for a stay, I look for a place that I can really call home for at least a month. And then to take it up a notch, I really love experiences where I can learn something, so I've stayed in homestays, too. [Once,] I was taking Italian classes and moved into a rental with a family and they taught me so much. That's my kind of travel. Travel doesn't need to be this thing that's just for vacation, it can be a way of life. It can be a way of learning and exploring and discovering so much about yourself and the world.

Why do you feel like the show is resonating at this moment, sitting as a top 10 show on Netflix for over a week now?

I think the timing of the show was unexpectedly great. People are itching to travel again. But on top of that, I think the show was made differently. We’re not only test driving the properties, but we’re hitting three properties per episode. You're living three trips with us in one 30-minute episode. So by the end of the season, there’s a lot of opportunity for viewers to see themselves living this experience. It's really cool to look at my DMs now and see screenshots of booking confirmations, like people who have booked an alpaca treehouse [in Atlanta]. And we're living in this social media age, so we can carry the conversation off the show—and that's really special to me.

You mentioned a few times how the show feels different to other travel or home shows, and I think one of the major differences is that two of the three hosts are women, a rarity for travel TV. What does it mean to bring more gender diversity into the travel show space?

For me, it was two checkboxes, because I'm a woman of color. When was the last time you saw a woman of color as the host in the travel space on a Netflix show? There are women of color hosting travel shows, but to be on a show that is on the top 10 charts? Wow. I've never really looked at gender or my ethnicity as limitations, but I do understand that when you carry yourself in the world, you're carrying all of it with you. I always see it as an opportunity to introduce [the people I meet] to somebody that looks like me. Maybe you’ve just never seen a single woman traveling alone. So it starts with, Hi, I'm Jo, nice to meet you. It’s also exciting to see people's perspective shift, or for them to be aware that we're out there traveling—and [have been]. But in the travel space, for some reason, it's always been skewed toward white men. I'm happy that we're opening up opportunities for more perspectives, because when we show that we're traveling, we inspire others like us to travel as well.

Now that Americans are able to travel more freely and the show is released, what are your next trips?

The pandemic isn't over, but vaccinations are helping open things up. I just want people to travel responsibly both for themselves and for the communities where they're entering. My next trip is to Greece. It's a place that I've gone many times because I’m studying Greek. So I'll be taking classes again—it’s all along that travel-to-learn wavelength. And then another trip I'm taking this year will be to Egypt, which I've also been to before, because I'm learning Arabic. When the show ended filming in January, I was bummed because I was home with nothing planned. We couldn't travel, and the one thing that always brought me joy is learning languages . So I started learning Arabic in March, and I've been taking lessons ever since—so I'm excited to go to Egypt again, with some basic phrases. When you speak a language, you unlock experiences that you literally would not get access to otherwise.

“The igloo was really spectacular—going into Finland in the winter and seeing those beautiful trees. Sleeping in an igloo had always been on my bucket list. It was also a budget [Airbnb]. It was a place I might never have gone before and [I got to have] these ridiculous experiences of going into a smoke sauna and going into the cold plunge pool—called “avanto” in Finnish—where you go into a hole in the ice. It was amazing.”

“Another one that sticks out is the alpaca farm treehouse. Especially if you're based in the States, I think it gives you this exotic flair, it connects you to animals in this beautiful way, and grounds you. They even have a yoga studio on site. Plus, it's 10 minutes away from Atlanta. So it really can check everything off your list. Go there if you're into nature, but you also want to be by the city. You want to get outside, but you also want to go to a restaurant. You get all of that there.”

“I never expected myself to say, 'I've gone on a yacht.' I would have been like no, Joanna Franco grew up as an immigrant kid. That wasn't in my future. I'm not used to luxury. But when we got on that yacht, it was a much more grounded experience than I expected. And maybe it was the combo of being on the water and getting to do adventurous things. We went to this tiny secluded island, where there was no one on it. And just with that access, I get it. I understand luxury now, from that experience on the yacht alone.”

It’s always hard to recount and reveal truths about the life of a widely-recognized celebrity in a biopic format. It’s another challenge altogether when that celebrity is  Luis Miguel , colloquially known as “The Sun of Mexico.”

Carla González Vargas, showrunner of “Luis Miguel: La Serie” on  Netflix  and president of Gato Grande productions, a joint venture with MGM Studios, had experience adapting the life of controversial figures, having worked in journalism and then written a book on Woody Allen in 2004. But she hadn’t tackled someone as beloved and Luis Miguel for a platform as broad as Netflix. Diego Boneto plays the title role.

Following the April 18 debut of “Luis Miguel: La serie” Season 2 (which marks the titular star’s real birthdate), González Vargas spoke with  Variety  about tapping into Spanish-language biopic fever. She also addressed the challenges of portraying the Mexican legend’s well-recorded public and tumultuous private life, from his days as a 1980s child prodigy with a bowl hair cut to the present.

Why do you think Luis Miguel’s story has worldwide appeal?

I think it’s precisely the combination of a very famous name with music that has shaped generations since he’s had a career for almost 30 years now because he started so young that his music has been with us for so many years. It’s good music that we have all made a part of our personal stories as listeners and audience. Fortunately, the rare combination comes with a dramatic, rich story that has universal appeal. I think it touches on primal aspects— the drama of being orphaned, so to speak, from parents at a very young age, having had a mother taken away in such a manner, without any explanation, and having your father be your antagonist. Plus, having a huge spotlight and appearing from the outside to have everything but, the more fame you have, the more your private life crumbles. I think they’re all universal principles that make for such a great story, so that is what is so rare about this project.

How do you think the recent surge in demand for Spanish-language biopic series in predominantly English-language markets will drive what productions MGM and Gato Grande Productions will consider now. What other iconic lives would you like to adapt for the screen (or would you like to see adapted)?

We are looking at all of the new projects that we’re developing that are not related to biopic series in general because it’s very rare to find celebrities or public figures that appeal worldwide in both languages. It’s not the same strategic bet in terms of development. We have contemplated a few names that we feel can travel and translate well worldwide, but their lives narratively speaking or dramatically speaking are not rich enough to have a super compelling drama, even if you’re not a follower of that person, per se. So, we are transcending that and focusing much more on purely scripted series.

It’s been a couple of years since the first season debuted [in 2018], so how did the creative and production process change for Season 2 compared to Season 1? Did COVID affect you in any way?

COVID affected it a lot. It prolonged the whole process painfully, so we decided to film seasons back-to-back, and the shoot got interrupted five times. It just took forever. My main challenge was making it more standardized because it was all that show when I was doing season one. Then the company [Gato Grande Productions] started after that. So, Gato Grande is two years old, and we started “Luis Miguel” four years ago. The show launched and gave birth, figuratively speaking, to a unique company, and that is doing things that haven’t been necessarily done before, and finding the right people and the right team to have a unique bicultural profile and be bicultural in terms of development is complex, to navigate both markets. So, we’ve been growing the business and establishing it simultaneously with filming and production.

What was the research and interview process like compared to the first season?

This time around, because the series already existed and people knew that we were trustworthy in terms of our quality, and our prudence in a way of handling sources. The challenge of portraying people on the screen is that most of these characters are alive, and they have their own names and their own family members. So, it was a tricky territory not to harm anyone, because that would never be the intent of the narrative. So, I think we gained the trust and opened that door to a lot of conversations of people surrounding Luis Miguel that were there during that time that want to remain anonymous. We wanted to honor Luis Miguel’s trust but also double-check his take on how things happened, because it also involved those other people.

How have you found new international talent and creators?

Authenticity is what we aim for because that’s what we stand for and what differentiates us in the market from other production companies that want to portray Latinx worlds. So, the way to achieve that is by finding creators from all of these countries that haven’t really crossed over to the U.S. A little bit before the pandemic we made a goal to travel to Spain, Argentina and Colombia to find these writers and to meet with local production companies that had access to top talent. So, now we [Gato Grande Productions] have eight co-productions with Spain, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, and we are also working with seven different Spanish-speaking nationalities of writers at the moment, just to give you an idea. After the hype of “Money Heist,” we got one of the main directors who’s a writer to work with us to prepare a series for the Spanish and English-language market. We also grabbed a producer from the Catalonian series “Merlí,” so we’re co-producing with them as well. We’re always trying to find openings and new paths into Hollywood, really.

What is unique about the production of “Luis Miguel: La Serie”?

I think one thing that hasn’t been done in the Spanish-language market is having the same actor portray the same character in a 20- and 30-year gap difference. So, the prosthetics that we are using have never been used before in Latin America— we had to have a specialist from Los Angeles design the character, do the prosthetics and then teach the makeup team in Mexico. So, in that way, we have always looked to push the standard and increase the standard a little higher and as much as we can for a Spanish-language series. We still have a long way to go, but we’re escalating it little by little. We had Diego [Boneta] sit in a chair for four hours every day— nothing in his face, not even his eyebrows were his. They had to push back his hairline and push back his eyebrows, and his cheeks and the neck were all different, too. The poor thing said he felt like he was covered in maple syrup every day. That was quite an ordeal for industry and for a production that has never done that before in Mexico, traveling prosthetics back and forth.

What do you hope that audiences take away from this season?

That everything has a price. Success and fame pose unimaginable challenges for a personal life— heavy is the head that wears the crown.

As you might be able to guess from the name of the show, these hour-long episodes take us to restaurants that are located in some of the most stunning locations in the world but are struggling with their menus and dishes. They are located on the edge of the world but are also on the edge of closing down.

This travel show on Netflix pictures unique locations and a bit of drama, as you can expect.

Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, the tourist returns for tumultuous second season on netflix.

luis travel show netflix

The first season of “The Tourist” was a clever little thriller over on Max, but that company continued its cavalcade of confusing choices and dumped the second outing, allowing the show to travel to Netflix, where it has been consistently in the top ten for the entirety of February as audiences caught up with year one. That fun season is now followed by a very twisted second one, a 6-episode outing that moves the action from Australia to Ireland—switching the title character if you think about it from one protagonist to the other—and upping the surreal, unpredictable sense of dark humor. It’s a bit of a rockier road in terms of quality, but there’s an admirable lunacy to the storytelling here that holds it together, throwing in new twists and memorable characters in a manner that’s reminiscent of prime Coen brothers, wherein one never knew what was going to happen next, and it was all darkly humorous at the same time. While Danielle Macdonald gets a little lost in the late-season emotion of this year, Jamie Dornan really holds it all together with a deceptively natural, engaging performance. It’s insane Max ever let him go.

The first season of “The Tourist” has a beautiful simplicity in its story of a man who wakes up after a car accident in the Outback with no idea of who he is or how he got there, only to discover that he may not like the guy he used to be. With so many questions answered in what could have been a self-contained season, one might wonder how they could do it again—amnesia a second time? The writers smartly move the action back to Elliot’s (Dornan) homeland in season two as he and Helen (Macdonald) travel there to learn more details about his dark past after receiving a mysterious photo. Before they even really get a pint in them, Elliot is kidnapped and thrown into the middle of a generation-spanning turf war between the families of the Cassidys and the McDonnells. The latter is led by the vicious Frank ( Francis Magee ) and the former by none other than our hero’s mother, Niamh (the excellent Olwen Fouéré ).

luis travel show netflix

A season that opens by separating its heroes and sending one to a remote island where he’s kept prisoner has about a dozen other twists up its sleeve that I wouldn't dare spoil here, as that's the joy of watching the show. Everyone on “The Tourist” hides an odd secret or two, even the seemingly ordinary detective ( Conor MacNeill ), who has something insane going on in his basement. When Helen sees her potential mother-in-law commit murder in the premiere it’s just the beginning of a series of narrative turns that stress that classic suspension of disbelief. “The Tourist” is like those page-turning novels you read on a beach, wherein each chapter ends with an insane new revelation that forces you to read the next before you question if it actually makes any sense at all. It’s really the show’s strength: A sense of breakneck plotting in an era when everyone feels like every show is a few episodes too long for its threadbare plot.

If the plotting is the strength, the emotions of the second season feel a bit like a weakness at times. The love story between Helen and Elliot takes center stage in rather intense ways, and it leads to a number of heartwrenching scenes, especially in the back half, that feel overly melodramatic. “The Tourist” is at its best when it’s not taking itself very seriously, having fun with its characters. Every time it diverts to really define Helen and Elliot’s eternal love, the seams in the writing start to show, and Macdonald gets lost a few times this season in overwrought melodrama that feels unearned. Luckily, she’s balanced by a truly great Dornan performance, one that seems to be honestly responding to every loony twist thrown his way. It’s more subdued that season one, allowing him to be the center as the chaotic world spins around him.

No one really understands what the heck is going on over at Max that they keep canceling movies and dropping content—an underreported recent head scratcher was allowing “Band of Brothers” to be on Netflix while “ Masters of the Air ” was dropping on Apple, which surely reignited interest in the original Playtone production in a manner that one would think would have sent people back to Max, but whatever. Letting “The Tourist” slide over to Netflix may be low on the list of their insane decisions of late, but it’s been funny to watch it slay for the competition, and it's hard to believe that the second season won’t do exactly the same. It’s funny to consider the executives who made the decision to let “The Tourist” go watching this effective second season on Netflix themselves, probably wondering why there aren’t more shows like it on Max.

Whole season screened for review. On Netflix February 29th.

2024’s Canceled Shows, for Your Final Consideration

W ay back in 2016, Vulture wrote of the now mostly forgotten Netflix series Bloodline that “Netflix did something it’s rarely done in its four-year history of original programming Wednesday: It canceled a show.” These days, updates on streaming series reckon with how “platforms invented cruel and unusual ways to cancel them.” Well, the great cancel-off of 2024 is officially on its way, and no show is safe. Without reputable sourcing on streaming audience numbers, there’s little way to know if your favorite piece of art content is actually a hit or just a hit with your friend group/online bubble/in-laws. So we end up with cancelations like Our Flag Means Death, which, based on the amount Taika Waititi fans talk about it, sure seemed like a hit. This Fool was canceled on February 14, which (besides Valentine’s Day) was Ash Wednesday. Time to think about your sins, execs. Below, a list of every TV show canceled so far in 2024.

luis travel show netflix

Everything changed when the Avatar returned.

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the 2005 Nickelodeon animated series " Avatar: The Last Airbender " is set to premiere on Netflix.

The show follows Aang who learns he is the Avatar, the only one who can master all four elements, and must defeat the Fire Nation to end a 100-year war.

"With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope. But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young Air Nomad − and the last of his kind − reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar," the show's synopsis reads.

The series will take fans of the classic cartoon on an adventure as Aang learns each bending form along with his friends Katara (Kiawentiio Tarbell) and Sokka (Ian Ousley). Throughout the first season, multiple Fire Nation threats including banished prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) do their best to capture Aang to bring to Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).
